Mujeres Autosustentables “Self-Sustaining Women� - A new model of Social Development centered on Training and Productivity

Program: Apparel workshops for women from rural and low income communities in Mexico


The Mujeres Autosustentables program includes all of the following items: · Two semi-industrial Sewing Machines: a Multipurpose Facilita Pro and a Safety Stitch Overlock Sewing Machine. · DVD Training Course (it includes a mini DVD player) detailing the best sewing techniques required to produce any type of apparel. · A kit with all the tools and accessories necessary to start a personal sewing workshop from home. · A kit with 25m of fabric of the highest quality and 51,000m of different colored thread, sufficient to produce 16 different garments for the whole family or to start marketing right away. · A Pattern kit including size by size patterns (all sizes included), ready to place on the fabric and cut. The patterns comprise 34 basic commercial garments, like: school uniforms, nurse scrubs, shirts, pants, jackets, blouses, huipiles (traditional Mexican blouse), wedding gowns, maternity clothes, and even Mexican Guayaberas. · “Business Administration and Development of the Entrepreneurial Spirit” Manual Kit, it includes: “How to Run your Business,” “Human Resources and its Administration,” “The Costs, Expenses, and Accounting of your Business,” “Selling, Charging, Marketing and Sales.” · A bank account with Banco Azteca (free of charge), Debit Card and $3,400.00 Pesos available as working capital to purchase fabrics and other work materials required to make 120 garments. · Constant support, training, and supervision during the first 18 months of operation, ensuring Sedesol and the IP that every workshop will be provided with all the tools required to be successful, and that after a year of profitable work the beneficiaries will be able to create 3 new jobs.

In Zautla, Puebla, 15 days after receiving their workshop and studying the DVD Training Course, the beneficiaries have developed the required skills to start producing their own garments to sell in their communities. With their new incomes the beneficiaries are helping improve the lives of their families and getting closer to becoming Mujeres Autosustentables!

Second Training Session for our group of 27 beneficiaries in Zautla, Puebla. It took place on Saturday December 18, 2010. The purpose of this training session is to strengthen the beneficiaries’skills when using the sewing machines and to answer any questions regarding the different techniques that might have come up as they studied the DVD Course. Each day of training lasts for 8 hours.

The excitement of the beneficiaries involved in the program is quite contagious, seeing that many of their husbands decided to join the training sessions while learning how to sew! In the future these men will also be able to create their own job once their wives start their workshops.

The other husbands who are not learning how to sew are supporting their wives by becoming the “babysitters� and assistants during the training sessions.

Below, a program beneficiary and her 11 year old daughter. While the mother does not know how to read, her daughter has read and taught her mother the contents of all the manuals while explaining to her the more complex procedures. Even though the daughter is not a program beneficiary, she has taken up sewing as a hobby while she finishes school and prepares to become a fashion designer.

She is now dreaming with a better future, since she was able to learn a valuable skill that will help her become self-sufficient in the future.

The sewing machines have now become their new “babies� as they carry them in their shawls up the mountains to their communities, with the renewed confidence that they are creating a better future for their whole families.
