Grouped Frequency Distribution Grouped Frequency Distribution In statistics, a frequency distribution is an arrangement of the values that one or more variables take in a sample. Each entry in the table contains the frequency or count of the occurrences of values within a particular group or interval, and in this way, the table summarizes the distribution of values in the sample A frequency distribution shows us a summarized grouping of data divided into mutually exclusive classes and the number of occurrences in a class. It is a way of showing unorganized data e.g. to show results of an election, income of people for a certain region, sales of a product within a certain period, student loan amounts of graduates, etc. Some of the graphs that can be used with frequency distributions are histograms, line graphs, bar charts and pie charts. Frequency distributions are used for both qualitative and quantitative data.

A large Set of data values can be broken into smaller and simplified groups using a method of Statistics called as grouped Frequency Distribution Table. It is desirable to group items, if they are large in number. This increases the clarity of understanding data. Let us suppose an example of the grouped distribution table. Suppose we have following set of data values: 14, 16, 7, 18, 8, 19, 10, 11, 13, 14, 17, and 7. Let us first reorganize the data values in ascending order (smaller to larger one). Data set looks like: 7, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 14, 16, 17, 18 and 19. Next step is to find the uppermost and bottommost values and subtract them. In our example, we will subtract 7 from 19: 19 - 7 = 12. We now decide the total number of groups to be considered. Next we calculate the size of interval for groups (i.e. the number of values that are to be accommodated within a group). In our example we calculate it by dividing the result we got in previous step i.e. 12 by 5 i.e. 12/5 = 2.4 or 2 (rounding up 2.4). Thus we will have 2 values per group. Now we can make groups as follows with three values in each: 7-8 10-11 13-14 16-17

18-19 We can now calculate the frequencies of data values in each group. For instance, in group one as we can see that there are 3 values in it (7, 7, and 8). We will write 3 in frequency column in front of group one. We repeat the same step for other groups also. Grouped distribution table can be drawn as follows: Groups
