A M ES SAG E FRO M TH E H E AD Dear Students of the Class of 2019, When I think about words that characterise your cohort and the interactions that both your teachers and I have had with you, there are three words that immediately come to mind: integrity, sustainability, and joy. It is unusual to find such commonalities among a group of 82 strong and unique individuals, and yet there are many instances when you have lived these principles and taken action to ensure that they remain important considerations in all you do. Consistently demonstrating ‘Integrity’ is not easy, and it requires choosing to be courageous; often, it requires sacrifice. You pushed yourselves in the expectations you set for yourselves, and you have created boundaries that allow you to balance achievement with well-being. What is also laudable is that you hold the adults in your life to the same standard and keep us accountable. This is a leadership trait, and one that will serve you well. ‘Sustainability’ is a theme that has woven itself throughout your final year here at Mulgrave. It started with Julie Ann Wrigley’s visit and came up time and again in discussions around mental health, entrepreneurship, and environment. You have brought attention to the idea of sustainability in many contexts, and we have all benefited from the conversation. The investment of resources into a problem is only half the solution, whether it is a personal or a global challenge. An effective solution must consider long-term viability, and you already factor that into your thinking. This gives me great faith that you will continue to grow into leaders who will find holistic solutions for the sustainability issues you will encounter.
And thirdly, ‘Joy’. The accumulation of many happy and joyous moments - moments created by you - helps to foster the buoyancy that enhances our resiliency. Your sense of humour and good fun reminds us to remain grounded and find pleasure in the small things. Your joy is also tied to gratitude. You have set the standard high for understanding that our privilege comes with responsibility; you have shown us that in serving others, we gain perspective that leads to genuine happiness. Actively practising gratitude and embracing joy wholeheartedly are two habits that I hope will persist long past your time at Mulgrave. You are an inspiring group of young leaders, and I am grateful to you for the impact you have made on our community and for the generosity of spirit you have shown to us all. Your innate predisposition to be considerate and cooperative is part of your legacy. You have accomplished a great deal during your time at our school, whether you were here for two years or 14. You have achieved remarkable academic and personal success, and I know that all of your teachers and parents join me in congratulating you for the hard work and consistent effort you have made to find success on your terms. Our goal has always been to help you establish the qualities and skills that will allow you to embrace the opportunities that will, no doubt, come your way, and I feel confident that you are well-prepared for life beyond Mulgrave. My warmest regards,
John Wray Head of School 3
PEGAH ABYAN EH Pegah joined Mulgrave in Grade 5 and has contributed a great deal to this community. She was actively involved in different school leadership and volunteer roles, including as the co-founder of the Mulgrave Coding Club. Pegah taught HTML & CSS code while managing the recruitment process and promotional material, and was also a proud member of the Global Nomads and HeadsUp clubs. Besides her volunteer involvements, Pegah was a member of the Mulgrave Tennis and Badminton teams. Her Extended Essay is a favourite memory because her IB EE entitled ‘Putative atln-1 deletion mutants of Caenorhabditis elegans exhibit mechanosensory arousal impairment phenotype’ challenged her to extend her research and writing abilities. Her most meaningful achievement that supported the larger community was volunteering at PALS Autism School, where she has been assisting with after school care activities. It is no surprise that Pegah has received offers from University of St. Andrews, King’s College London, University of Rochester, McGill, and UBC. Next year, Pegah plans to study medicine at St. Andrews in Scotland.
VIAN N E Y AH N Vianne came to Mulgrave in Grade 9, and her quiet yet cheerful presence has since been a welcome addition to our community. Vianne is multi-talented. An accomplished pianist and flautist, she also played the bassoon in the Mulgrave Concert Band, and was a member of the Cross Country team. However, Vianne truly shines in the area of service. She has worked with many organisations, including her Buddhist community, where she fostered and supported youth presence at the temple, the Salvation Army, and the Two Hands Charitable Society, and she served as a mentor of young international students. In addition, she participated in the school trip to Ladakh, India, where she volunteered at the Lamdon School. A favourite memory of her time at Mulgrave was working on her Personal Project. Although she experienced challenges, this experience allowed her to form closer relationships with her teachers, advisor, and peers as they supported her through her challenges. Vianne has received offers from Waterloo, McGill, Guelph, and Purdue. However, she has decided to make California home for the next chapter in her life, where she will study agricultural sciences at UC Davis.
C HAR LOT TE AR M STRO N G Charlotte joined the Mulgrave community in Grade 6. Her active role in both leadership and athletics was exemplified through her involvement with the House Leadership Team. She was an ever-enthusiastic House Captain for Curie and helped grow a sense of community within the House system here at Mulgrave. As well, she truly led by example when she was captain of the Cross Country team and they ran their way to the BC Provincial Championships. Of course, Charlotte also kept busy and active outside of the Mulgrave community. She earned a spot on Canada’s National Netball team and represented the country in many tournaments around the world. Charlotte has many great memories from her Upper School experience, but the fondest is the Grade 10 trip to Rivers Inlet where she enjoyed time with her peers in a beautiful location. Charlotte has loved being a part of Mulgrave and embraced her Canadian experience but plans to head back to Australia to study architecture for her next adventure.

NATHAN B I D D ER Grade 3 marked the start of Nathan’s school life at Mulgrave. Nathan is an avid outdoorsman, and although he often keeps a low profile in classrooms and corridors, he has always been a keen participant in Mulgrave’s many and varied Outdoor Education opportunities. His favourite Mulgrave memory is going on the Summit 1 kayaking trip to Twin Island in Grade 7. He especially enjoyed playing capture the flag, preparing his own food, and the freedom of running around the campsite. Nowadays, he still enjoys the outdoors and keeps active with cycling. As well, he put his creativity to work by making a video with the school Film Club for WorkSafeBC. Nathan is also involved in the community outside of Mulgrave and he gives back by volunteering as a tech tutor for seniors at his local library. Next year, Nathan will enter McGill University’s computer science programme. We wish Nathan the best of luck in all his endeavours.
JAC K B I RC H Jack joined Mulgrave in Grade 3. Throughout his time at Mulgrave, he was consistently active in athletics and participated as a member of the Junior and Middle School Soccer and Basketball teams. A student with a variety of interests, he won the Lasermaster Provincial Championship when he was in Grade 7. Jack is also an active participant in his wider community and has volunteered as a Youth Representative on the West Vancouver United Church Board and as a Summer Kids Camp counsellor. Clearly, service is important to him as further demonstrated by his participation in the Oppenheimer Project, which provides food to the malnourished and impoverished. Jack’s favourite Mulgrave memory is from those early carefree days of Junior School; he specifically has very fond memories of the Grade 3 overnight camp when he and friends stayed up to play late night hockey! Jack plans to attend Acadia University in the fall to study business.
TH O MA S B R I D G ER Tom joined Mulgrave in Grade 9 and quickly became an involved member of the community. Active in the Tech Club, he also helped with several Senior School productions. His contributions to the larger community include organising a tennis tournament for charity. In addition, Tom has been involved in virtually every sports team (with the possible exception of K-Pop): soccer, tennis, badminton, rugby, cross country, and volleyball. Tom reports his most significant achievement, however, was the impressive improvement he brought about in his academics since the beginning of Grade 11. He did this through imposing a disciplined approach to his studies, including the creation of highly-structured study calendars, which he actually followed. This approach will stand him in good stead as he pursues his university studies. Interestingly, a favourite Mulgrave memory of Tom’s was Ms. Nolan-Wood’s efforts to understand the shoe collection that Linda Chen brought to school. Tom hopes to study engineering at McGill, UBC, the University of Toronto, or Guelph and has received several offers, as well as scholarships from these institutions. Tom’s easy-going attitude, friendliness, and athletic prowess will be missed. 5
B RO NWEN C AM PB ELL A relative late-comer to Mulgrave, Bronwen joined our school only last year, yet she quickly integrated herself into our community. During her time at Mulgrave, she contributed meaningfully through her service on the Senior School Academic Council and the Grad committee. She was also a valued member of both the Cross Country and Tennis teams. Apart from her activities at her school, however, Bronwen is a dedicated athlete, a cyclist who competed at the provincial and national level in road, cyclocross, and track. She subsequently took on a mentorship role, working with young riders and eventually becoming a junior coach to the U13 cyclocross athletes. Bronwen intends to pursue her studies in business. She was accepted at numerous universities, including UBC, the University of Calgary, and Ryerson, but has decided on St. Francis Xavier, where she was awarded a full academic scholarship. Bronwen’s favourite memory of Mulgrave was the close bond that was created within her French HL class. Bronwen’s 100watt smile and her upbeat, inclusive attitude will be missed.
MAD ELEI N E C AM PE AU Madeleine joined Mulgrave in Kindergarten, which makes her a Mulgravian through and through. As someone who has grown up in an environment that encourages students to follow their passions, Madeleine has certainly embraced her love of the performing arts. She is a thespian, a beautiful dancer, and an accomplished singer and musician. It is no surprise that the majority of the activities that she has participated in revolve around performance. Madeleine was a key member of the cast for The Children’s Hour, the Senior School production in 2018, as Karen, one of the main characters in this Broadway play. Madeleine has also made it a point over the years to share her talents with a wider community, and so she has performed in The Nutcracker in presentations across the Lower Mainland over the Christmas season. Though it was a significant commitment of her personal time, she did it out of love for dance and theatre. Madeleine will continue to pursue her love of the arts as a student at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City, where she has also earned a generous merit scholarship.
H OWAR D C H EN Howard joined Mulgrave in Grade 10 and enjoyed the many strands of education that the school has to offer all while establishing long-lasting friendships. While at Mulgrave, Howard has been involved in several clubs and teams. He was an active member of the Badminton team where he helped ensure that the Mulgrave team had a successful season. Always looking for ways to synthesise his learning, he managed to do this in a very creative manner for his Extended Essay. For this research paper, his creative and analytical powers came together as he combined his passion for both physics and badminton to explore the sweet spot of the badminton racket. Howard looks forward to finishing his IB exams and moving onto his studies at university where he will specialise in those fields that he is passionate about. Howard has been accepted to several schools in Canada and internationally. He has not decided where he will go just yet, but he knows that he will study computer science.

S I YI N G (AN G EL A) C H EN With the voice of Maria Callas and the spirit of a troubadour, Angela has performed at Mulgrave assemblies and events since her start in Grade 6. Angela has spread her love of music to us all by helping to organise morning lobby music performances. If she seems quiet, it is because she is often contemplating many of life’s big questions. She can be counted on to tell the truth and is not afraid of having meaningful and in-depth discussions. Angela has also been a valued member of the Swim team and has found meaning through her service work for which she was awarded a Youth Group Service Award from the District of West Vancouver. One of her favourite memories is her time spent at River’s Inlet with her peers. Angela has decided to study political science and has been accepted to UBC and McGill but will be attending the University of Toronto, which fits her talents and passions best. This young lady has a lot to share with the world and the people in it. Her obscure sense of humour and honesty will be greatly missed.
Y U FEI (LI N DA) C H EN Yufei (Linda) has been a Mulgravian since Grade 3. Throughout her years here, she has been an active and enthusiastic participant in a variety of clubs and teams. She has been a part of Grad Committee, Ambassadors, and the Middle School Leadership team. As well, she put her enthusiastic and fiesty nature to work by getting involved in many of the athletics and outdoor opportunities offered here at Mulgrave. She is a force on the field and court and has participated in basketball, rugby, and in the Duke of Edinburgh programme. Many of Linda’s greatest memories at Mulgrave revolve around the close and lasting friendships she made with her peers, as well as being involved in a 2nd Place finish after making it to the BC Provincials in basketball. Linda has used the knowledge gained from Mulgrave to become business savvy, and she plans to use time next year in a gap year to pursue some of those adventures. Linda has been accepted to several universities across Canada but will defer her acceptance for a year.
C H LO E COSTA Chloe has been at Mulgrave since Grade 10 and has enjoyed participating in a multitude of clubs and activities that the school has to offer, all while establishing long-lasting friendships. Throughout her time at Mulgrave, Chloe has been an integral part of the student body. Her active role in leadership, service, and the arts was highlighted through her involvement with The Children’s Hour theatre production and the Duke of Edinburgh programme. Chloe had an integral role in organising other service-oriented initiatives such as the Vision Rescue Club. As well, she showed outstanding academic independence by completing the IB Bilingual Diploma in both French and English, something not many students in the world accomplish. Chloe’s greatest memories come from going on school trips throughout her years here at Mulgrave; she really enjoyed the Banff Choir trip and this is one of her favourite memories from high school. Chloe has been accepted to several universities throughout Canada and Europe, and has decided to attend Sciences Po (The Paris Institute of Political Studies) in France. 7
H EN RY (HAR RY ) C R ER AR Harry became part of the Mulgrave community as a Grade 8 student and has accomplished much since then. In addition to hiking most of the North Shore peaks, he has co-written The Glorious Mountains of Vancouver’s North Shore, a detailed and illustrated guide that profiles the traditional territories of the ’ Skwxwú7mesh/Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, xwmə0kwəyəm/Musqueam, and Stó:lō First Nations. At Mulgrave, Harry has excelled as a key member of our World Scholars Cup delegation, the Debate and Public Speaking team, and our Cross Country team. Furthermore, he has moved through all three levels of the Duke of Edinburgh programme. With this substantial background in the great outdoors, it is unsurprising that his favourite memory of his Mulgrave experience was the trip to BC’s central coast and Rivers Inlet in Grade 10. Harry has received offers from Dalhousie, University of Toronto, McGill, and the University of St. Andrews. After being shortlisted for the McEuen Scholarship for St. Andrews, and awarded the McGill Entrance Scholarship, Harry has decided to study Biology at McGill next fall.
C EC I LE DAI Cecile is a Mulgrave lifer, having joined the school in Kindergarten. Both within and outside of Mulgrave, Cecile has participated in clubs and competitions through her interests in ballet, jazz, and contemporary dance. Her artistic interests have also been put to good use as a member of the Design Club and the Arts Council. As much as she’s looked to develop within herself, Cecile has taken up opportunities to give back to others. She was a tutor and assisted seniors as a volunteer at the West Vancouver Seniors’ Activity Centre. Cecile is proud that her initiative was rewarded when she was invited to be a presenter for volunteer information sessions at the West Vancouver Community Centre, where she had been volunteering to help organise and run various community events. Amongst Cecile’s favourite Mulgrave memories is staring into the neverending starry sky on Outdoor Education camping trips. After careful consideration of her offers from UBC, McGill, Santa Clara, and Waterloo, Cecile intends to study computer science at McGill University.
C H R I STO PH ER D EM I R EL Chris joined Mulgrave in Grade 6. He has made a big service contribution to our school through his leadership of the Sharing Our Cultures Club and the organisation of a variety of cultural events. This is an aspect of our school community that Chris is passionate about, exemplifying his own cross-cultural values and skills. Involvement in these activities is also Chris’s favourite school memory. Rounding out his involvement in service, Chris served our community as a member of the Service Action Council. In athletics, Chris has been a member of the Badminton team, a high performer in the local fencing club, and has been involved in outdoor education activities. Academically, Chris has shown great resilience and determination to achieve high grades, not least in math, which was a struggle for some years before Chris achieved success. Chris has offers from several Canadian universities to study biochemistry, which he hopes will be a precursor to medicine.

J O C ELYN D ESAB R AI S Jocelyn began her Mulgrave journey in Grade 1, and over her 12 years here, she has contributed to Mulgrave life in many ways. She played soccer and volleyball and has been a consistent and enthusiastic member of the school choir. In Grade 6, Jocelyn represented the interests of our younger Mulgrave students as a member of the Grade 6 Student Leadership Committee. As a Senior School student, she was actively engaged in many initiatives, one of which was Grad Committee. This was a fitting committee for Jocelyn to join as it put her well-honed social skills to work as she ensured that Grad events were fun and inclusive for the whole class. One of Jocelyn’s most fond memories of Mulgrave was having the support of her friends when they came out to cheer on the Senior Girls Volleyball team while she was competing in home games. Jocelyn has been accepted to the University of Alberta, the University of Calgary, the University of Saskatchewan, and the University of Toronto, and hopes to study animal bioscience.
AN NA ED M O N DS Anna, a Mulgravian since Grade 8, has made outstanding contributions to our school and the community. Her sense of social justice led her to serve many organisations, including Spirit Week, Senior School Service Action Council, Human Rights Council and Backpack Buddies. She has also worked with the Youth Philanthropy Council and It Takes a Village. In addition, she spearheaded a campaign for the victims of the Mexican earthquake and organised a TEDxYouth talk. As her Grade 10 Personal Project, she assisted two Syrian refugee families, and subsequently founded the 360 Club, which raised thousands of dollars in support of these families. Anna also played on the Volleyball team, participated in school productions, and attained her gold level of the Duke of Ed programme. Next year, Anna will study management in science and engineering at Stanford University or take a gap year to volunteer and study Mandarin. A favourite Mulgrave memory is discussing with Mr. Prior the similarity between the IB programme and a relationship - both are full of ups and downs. Anna’s warm personality and her passionate dedication to her commitments will be missed.
MA X WELL ELY ZEN As a Mulgrave ‘lifer’, Max has been at Mulgrave since Kindergarten. A true rarity, his clever sense of humor and wit were only experienced by those close to him. He has been a valued member of the Track and Field team, a participant in the Duke of Edinburgh programme, and he has organised clean-up crews at Ambleside Beach. Over the years, Max has developed an expressive and artistic voice through his incredible artwork. This work has contributed to the strength of the Visual Arts programme. His creative ventures have transversed from Visual Arts to the Film programme where Max has participated in Zoomfest productions for the past three years. Most notably, this year, Max starred as ‘Max’ in the short film, Max Attacks . The film is currently competing in film festivals across the province. Leaving Mulgrave, Max is at the start of an exciting, creative journey in fine arts. The world is his oyster to construct and shape the way he envisions it. We look forward to seeing what he will create.

C HAR LOT TE GO E T TI N G Sweet, sincere, and caring are a trio of words that can accurately describe Charlotte. She joined Mulgrave in Grade 9 and made fast friends with many of her peers. This is a testament to her ability to accept and value others as they are. A committed member of the Swim team, the Cross Country team, and the Chamber Choir, Charlotte has enjoyed playing an active part in the school community. Her sense of adventure has also led her to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh programme and the Ladakh trip in 2017. Charlotte’s willingness to do good has made her a committed member of the Human Rights Club, the Mulgrave Emergency Response Team (MERT), and the 360 Club. She has chosen to continue her dedication to service in the field of nursing, and she has decided to attend Queen’s University after receiving offers from the University of Alberta, Dalhousie, and McGill. Her kind nature and cheery disposition will be missed by all.
Y U (LEO) G U O Leo joined Mulgrave in Grade 5. Since becoming a Mulgravian, he has eagerly sought out opportunities to be involved with the community and showcase his phenomenal sense of humour and kind, good nature. Leo embodies the value of humility, and he seeks to serve others in ways that could go unnoticed, but he does have fond memories of his service trip to the Dominican Republic through the MeToWe humanitarian organisation. As a group, they worked to build a school for one of the underserved communities and learned quite a lot about the geopolitical factors that make life in this Caribbean country so challenging. Leo is also a co-founder of the Mulgrave Film Club where he planted the seed for other film aficionados to explore the medium. Leo’s favourite memory was one that involves some honest explanations about some interesting photos to the principals, but it likely has more to do with his sense of humour than a behaviour that doesn’t align with his moral code. Leo has received offers from several universities including the University of Alberta, but he is waiting for a decision from the Royal Military College for the opportunity to study criminology and history, while serving his country.
NATALI E HAN NA Natalie joined Mulgrave in Grade 1. During her many years here, she has entertained us in numerous ways including as an active member of the Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, and Jazz Band. Natalie has also participated in the school’s Service Action Council, Swim team and Photography Club. Natalie is a very well-rounded student and has consistently demonstrated a commitment to service and outdoor education. This is evident by her successful achievement of Bronze, Silver, and Gold Duke of Edinburgh awards. As well, while on the Lion’s Gate Hospital Foundation Youth Committee, she helped organise the 2019 MedEd Conference for Vancouver youth. She has also always made time to have a little fun, and this is clear in her favourite school memory, which was ‘Dress Up as Your Teacher Day’ when her whole biology class wore ‘bald caps’ to dress up like Mr. O! Natalie has received offers and scholarships from a range of international and Canadian universities, and will likely study medical sciences at McGill or the University of British Columbia. 10
MAGG I E HAU GO M Maggie joined the Mulgrave community in Grade 1 and has been an active member of the school community since then. She is a student who has embraced all of the strands of school life at Mulgrave, which is clear from the variety of clubs, teams, and initiatives in which she has been involved. During her Junior and Middle School years, she participated in Student Ambassadors, Middle School Service Action Council, and We Day. She also sang in the choir and played basketball and volleyball. Indeed, Maggie loves volleyball and has been on every Mulgrave Volleyball team throughout her Junior, Middle, and Senior School career! Maggie has many favourite Mulgrave memories, but her top two include the Grade 8 Camp where she and her friends played president in the tent and the unforgettable Eastern USA trip. Maggie has received offers from Simon Fraser University and the University of Victoria but will likely attend Ryerson University to study retail management.
M O LLI E HAU GO M Mollie’s brilliant smile and positive energy have graced Mulgrave’s halls since Grade 1, which makes her a Mulgrave lifer. During her time here, she has been involved in many facets of school life. In Junior School, she was on the Track, Volleyball, and Basketball teams; in Middle School, she was part of the Middle School Service Action Council; and in Senior School, Mollie participated in the school production of Peter Pan and was a valued member of the school Volleyball team. In addition, Mollie served in the community working with children in the gymnastics programme of the West Vancouver Community Centre, which was particularly meaningful for her as she enjoyed working with young children and sharing with them the joys of this sport. Although one of her favourite Mulgrave memories was completing her Extended Essay, her most memorable experience, if the coldest, was dog-sledding in Eastern Canada. Next year, Mollie plans to attend Ryerson University or the University of Victoria to study humanities or business. Mollie’s friendly attitude and warmth will be missed at Mulgrave.
YI LI N (EL AI N E ) H E Elaine joined Mulgrave in Grade 8. She has enjoyed her life at the school and has eagerly sought out opportunities to be involved in the Mulgrave community. Elaine has been an integral member of the Mulgrave studentinitiated Vision Rescue Foundation (VRF). She is the head of the sales department and has organised all of their fundraising activities. Outside of school, Elaine has been a dedicated Royal Canadian Air Cadet and has represented this youth programme as part of our Remembrance Day ceremony for many years. Besides her volunteer involvements, she has also participated in many different activities, including badminton, volleyball, band, and Duke of Edinburgh programme. Her favourite memory at Mulgrave includes her service trip to Ecuador and the Grade 10 Winter Camp. Winter Camp was an opportunity for her to learn how to survive in a snow-covered location and build an outdoor stove in the snowy area. The experience pushed her out of her comfort zone and increased her resilience. Next year, Elaine is going to study at University of Toronto. Her major is, as of yet, undecided. 11
N I C H O L A S H I LKE WI C H Nick joined Mulgrave in Grade 9. He is an athletic student who successfully manages a balance between his rigorous athletic training and the demands of the IB programme. Nick is best known for his swimming, but he also has a black belt in Taekwondo. Nick is a dedicated member of the Mulgrave Swim team and the West Vancouver Otters Swim Club. This commitment requires waking up at 4:00am for morning practice, leaving school early for afternoon practices, and eating a controlled diet for optimal health. Nick is a role model who shares his love for swimming with younger students as a coach of the Junior Swim team. One of Nick’s favourite memories of Mulgrave is winning a bronze medal at the Swimming Provincial Championships. Nick has received offers from a number of Canadian universities, and has accepted a swimming scholarship to attend Simon Fraser University to study criminology.
AN D R E W H O R N ER Andrew, who has been a member of the Mulgrave community since he was a wee 4-year-old starting Kindergarten, has contributed a great deal to the Mulgrave community. He has served on the Student Service Action Council, and on the Student Voice and Backpack Buddies organising committees. His record of leadership and contribution to Mulgrave life over the years culminated in Andrew being selected as member of the Student Board in his Grade 12 year. Andrew has also represented Mulgrave as a member of the Swim, Track and Field, and Cross Country teams, and as a member of the Theatre Tech Crew. Throughout his Mulgrave years, Andrew was awarded second prize in the Fraser Institute Essay Contest, a West Vancouver Youth Appreciation Award, and an Economics Subject Award. His favourite Mulgrave memory is the Grade 9 Eastern Canada Trip, with finishing his Extended Essay coming in at a very close second. With offers from McGill, University of Toronto, Waterloo, Queen’s University, Western, University College London, Exeter, Edinburgh, Wilfrid Laurier, and University of Calgary, next year, Andrew intends to study commerce and financial mathematics at Queen’s Smith School of Business.
LI LLIAN H UAN G Lillian joined Mulgrave in Kindergarten and wears the ‘Mulgrave Lifer’ badge of honour with pride. During her lifetime at Mulgrave, Lillian has made a valuable contribution to all aspects of the Mulgrave community. Highlights include being a Badminton and Cross Country team member, a member of the Middle School Service Action Council (MSAC) and co-chair of the Senior School Service Action Council and the Youth Philanthropy Council. She was also on the Model United Nations team and co-directed the first student-run youth TEDx in West Vancouver. Lillian’s love for music is exemplified by her role in Concert and Jazz Bands and in various choirs. Lillian shares her time and her love for music by volunteering in the ‘Heart of City’ Piano Programme as a piano teacher for younger children. Her strong commitment to service work is also reflected in her successful achievement of all three levels of the Duke of Edinburgh awards. Lillian’s favourite Mulgrave memory is receiving a standing ovation for a Chamber Choir performance at the Banff Rocky Mountain Music Festival. Lillian has received multiple offers from Canadian and US universities and will likely attend McGill to study philosophy and political science. 12
ADAM JAMAL Adam joined Mulgrave in Grade 3. Throughout his time at our school, he has shown a commitment to service, most recently exemplified through his contribution to the Graduation Committee and his volunteer support of the summer camps at Lighthouse Park. While Adam is remembered by some for his founding of the Rap Battle Club, it is through his contribution to the Film Department and Club that Adam will create a lasting memory. He co-founded the Film Club and has supported a range of service and semi-professional film projects in our Film Studio including a variety of high-quality marketing movies. For his final Capstone project, Adam created a public service announcement about climate change. Adam comes across as a quietly confident yet self-assured young man. His self-discipline is demonstrated by his regular attendance at the gym and his great perseverance and time management in undertaking the Theory of Knowledge online course. Adam’s skills in film have been recognised by Chapman University where Adam has been accepted into the competitive film production and screenwriting programme with a Provost Scholarship of $100,000.
NATA S HA KE AR N S Natasha has been a student at Mulgrave since Kindergarten, and she is a significant part of the heart that makes our community whole. If Natasha had a motto, it would be to lead by example. Her record of involvement spans from her participation in Kids Care Club, Cypress Service, Grade 6 Leadership, Recycling Club, Middle School Service Action Council (MSAC), Student Voice, HeadsUp Group, SSAC, Grad Committee, and the 360 Club. Despite her community commitments, she has always found time to lend support to others or an ear to listen. Natasha has fond memories of her trip to the Broughton Archipelago on her Duke of Edinburgh Gold trip. Her dedication and passion for community and service will serve her well in the physical geography and resource management programmes that she has chosen to study in her post-secondary career. With a list of university options, Natasha has a bright future ahead of her. We wish her the best on her future adventures and look forward to her return visits to the school.
N I CO LE LEE Nicole came to Mulgrave in Kindergarten, which makes her a ‘lifer’. She has been part of the fabric of this school for many years and has shown great initiative in all of the strands offered. Nicole has played a key role in leadership at the school with her involvement on the House Leadership team, Athletics Council, and the Senior School Service Action Council. She has been an active member of the athletic community at Mulgrave as an integral member of the Senior Girls Volleyball team and the Swim team. A highlight of her Senior School career was leading the Senior Girls Volleyball team to a successful finish in her final year as captain. Her greatest memory is indicative of her community-focussed heart: She thoroughly enjoyed hanging with her Kindie buddies, creating art and reading together. As well, Nicole will miss the fun she had in biology class. She has received numerous entrance scholarships and has been accepted to multiple Canadian universities, and she has decided to stay local and attend the University of British Columbia. 13
M O FAN (L AELIA) LEI It was in her Grade 8 year that Laelia joined Mulgrave. As an avid athlete, Laelia has been a key part of the school’s House Leadership team. She has also acted in a leadership capacity in her roles on the Athletic and Senior School Service Action Councils. She has been on the Basketball and Badminton teams since joining Mulgrave and was on the Track and Field team in Grade 11. Laelia has also enjoyed more creative pursuits in athleticism and was part of the KPop Club whilst in Middle School. She is rightfully very proud of her part in helping Mulgrave’s Senior Girls achieve 2nd place at the Provincial level for basketball in her Grade 10 year; however, her favourite memory of her time at Mulgrave is the Grade 10 camp at Manning Park. Laelia has loved living on the West Coast and will miss it very much, but is excited to be moving internationally. After having received offers from Western and NYU, she has decided to begin her studies in Florence with NYU before moving to New York City to focus on Media and Cultural Communication.
PAI G E LEO NAR D Paige’s playful and jovial nature has followed her from her start at Mulgrave in Grade 5 through to the Senior School. Most known for her infectious smile and her ability to make others laugh, Paige has made her presence known through her demonstration of school spirit. Her continuous commitment to the Volleyball team has resulted in many long-lasting friendships and the development of an athletic skill set that will serve her well for years to come. She also provided support to her cohort through her work on the Grad Committee this past year. Her extraversive demeanor has allowed her great success on stage as a talented and enthusiastic member of the ensembles that produced Slayer, Peter Pan, and The Children’s Hour Upper School performances. Paige’s favourite memories are those shared with her friends on the Eastern Canada trip in Grade 9. Paige has decided to study business at Bishop’s University. Her spirit has been appreciated and will be missed.

He also shared his musical talents outside of school by playing alto saxophone in the West Vancouver Youth Band. David could not narrow down all of his wonderful memories into one favourite one as there are simply far too many - he shared that he loved every minute at Mulgrave. David has received offers from multiple universities and will be heading to Boston University to study engineering in the fall. 14
STEPH EN LIAO Stephen joined Mulgrave in Grade 8. During his years at Mulgrave, he embraced all of the strands of school life as demonstrated by his participation on the Swim and Soccer teams in Middle School, and on Mulgrave’s Junior and Senior Rugby teams. Stephen’s athleticism was also always evident in his enthusiastic participation in Mulgrave’s Battle of the Houses. In the area of service, Stephen joined the Vision Rescue Foundation group in Grade 9 so that he could help fundraise and raise awareness about optometry care in third world countries. Stephen also participated in the Action for Esther fundraising event, and the Ladakh Service Trip was an incredibly memorable experience. Stephen’s favourite memory is finishing his English Individual Oral Commentary as he felt it was the most stressinducing test ever, and he was relieved to have it behind him. Stephen is looking forward to studying architecture in the future; he is still finalising his decision on where he will attend. Best of luck, Stephen!
E THAN LI PPMAN Ethan has welcomed many new and prospective families to Mulgrave. Having joined us in Grade 2, Ethan has lived so thoroughly a Mulgrave life that holding the title of a ‘lifer’ is perfectly suitable for him. He has been on Mulgrave’s Swim and Cross-Country teams and has completed all three levels of the Duke of Edinburgh award. He has served the Mulgrave community in leadership roles since Grade 6. Ethan is skilled in language acquisition and participates in his learning in a way that is authentic and fun; his fondest memory of his time at Mulgrave is his first trip without his parents in Grade 6 to Shanghai. He remembers the cultural experience and the Chinese cuisine as ‘amazing’. His passion for learning Mandarin saw him earn the Provincial Chinese Poetry and Speech distinction twice. Ethan is a very accomplished young man; he has earned the West Vancouver Youth Appreciation award five times and the National Title in Taekwondo four times. After graduation, Ethan plans to enter the fields of Business and International Studies, specialising in Mandarin at the University of Southern California.
M EN G H U I (KIAR A) LI U Kiara joined Mulgrave in Grade 10 and has since been striving to achieve her academic best across all of her subjects. Academics are not her only strength; literature is also a passion of hers. Kiara has been working away at translating a popular Chinese novel to English for the past two years. She is also a poet, and her work has been submitted to the school’s Frog and Flowers publication. In addition to these creative ventures, Kiara has been working on producing an animation project, as well as writing a comic. Her talents are as widespread as her list of university offers. Kiara has been admitted to a variety of universities, but she has chosen a school where their strong liberal arts programme will support her interest in creative writing and psychology. Wellesley University is fortunate to be welcoming her next year. We wish her the best of luck and we hope to read her translated novel once it is finished.

J U NJ I E (PE TER) LU O Peter joined Mulgrave in Grade 4. He has been involved in many aspects of school life, making him a well-rounded Mulgrave IB student. He has been an active member of Mulgrave’s Rugby and Basketball teams throughout his time at the school and sang as a member of the Grade 9 and 10 Choirs. Most memorably, Peter was a member of the Rugby team that famously won the Senior Mulgrave Invitational Tournament and subsequently won the ‘All Heart’ Rugby award in Grades 9 and 10. Peter has shown tremendous determination in his academic studies and demonstrated that with hard work and resoluteness, he can achieve his academic goals. Peter is a loyal friend to his peers and has shown great sincerity in supporting others around him. Peter has had offers from a number of Canadian universities and will likely attend UBC to study film.
C ELI NA MANJ I Celina has been at Mulgrave since Kindergarten and, as such, she can be characterised as a ‘lifer’. As a student ambassador, hers has been the face greeting new and prospective families to Mulgrave, and her brilliant smile in the face of any adversity is contagious. However, Celina’s positive energy and enthusiasm are perhaps never more visible than when she is on the basketball court. She has also played volleyball and competed on the swim team and in track; it is unsurprising that she won Female Athlete of the Year in both Junior and Middle School. Celina developed her leadership skills from G6 Leadership and continued to lead through her work on Kids Care Club, Athletics Council, Student Board, MSAC, and SSAC. As she leaves Mulgrave, she carries with her many fond memories, but one of her favourite is of Mr. Ovenell-Carter baking bread for their advisory group. After receiving offers from the University of Victoria, University of Ottawa, Ryerson, Western, and Queen’s, Celina has chosen to study biomedical engineering at Western University in the fall.
J I N GYI MAO Jingyi joined Mulgrave in Grade 10 and although her time here has not been long, she established great friendships and contributed much to our community. While at Mulgrave, Jingyi has been involved in several clubs and initiatives that are near and dear to her heart. One such initiative required her to travel to volunteer with an organisation in China that helps raise money for students who are visually impaired. Her work in this area ultimately resulted in her being recognised with a Youth Appreciation award from the District of West Vancouver. She was also always willing to lend a hand in smaller, closer-to-home initiatives and was quick to help out with Mulgrave’s school performances backstage where she supported the performers with costumes and makeup. Her fondest memories come from Grade 10 Winter Camp where she and her friends learnt new skills such as tent set up and cooking in the extreme cold. Jingyi has been accepted to several universities across Canada and plans to study humanities at McGill University.

AN D R E W MARC H Andrew joined Mulgrave in Grade 4. This ginger-haired boy has been spreading his signature smile throughout the halls of our Junior, Middle, and Senior School, keeping his teachers and peers entertained and sharing his unique sense of fun. In his last year, Andrew signed up to be part of the Grad Committee and contributed to making sure that the Grad Class of 2019 would have a year to remember. In addition to his volunteer work, Andrew has been a consistent member of the Rugby team, his quick feet and strategy welcome additions. Andrew’s high energy is hard to temper, but it was a knock to the head on a door frame and subsequent stitches that he remembers as a fond memory, perhaps because having to keep still is such an unusual state of being for him. Andrew was accepted by Ryerson University and Western University with a scholarship, but he is still waiting to hear back from the University of Toronto, his first choice. Andrew plans to study economics as part of his post-secondary pursuits.
SAYEED MAVAN I When thinking of Sayeed, the values of humility, honesty, and strength come to mind. A life-long member of the Mulgrave community, Sayeed joined us in Kindergarten and has since become a beacon amongst his peers. He has competed on the Provincial Squash team, and has been a member of the Human Rights Club, Middle and Senior School Service Action Councils, Student Voice, Cypress Service...and the list goes on. At the heart of his community involvement is the intention to connect with others in the spirit of humanity and friendship. It is no wonder that he has been awarded both Mulgrave’s Andrew Lambert Award for Positive Action and the Youth Service Award from the District of West Vancouver. Among his many favourite Mulgrave memories are those from the River’s Inlet Trip in Grade 10. After a summer internship with BC Children’s Hospital, Sayeed will be joining the life sciences programme at McGill University. Sayeed’s caring and positive leadership have been valued and will be missed in our community; we know that McGill will benefit greatly from his enrolment at their university.
ALI M EC KL AI Ali’s mischievous sense of humour and original approach to life have been part of the Mulgrave community since he was in Grade 8. His contributions to the school community have been varied: he has served on the Student Board and founded the Rap Battle Club, and he has been an active and valued member of both the Volleyball and Basketball teams. Among his memorable achievements at Mulgrave are getting the water fountain built on the playing field and his many successful entrepreneurship adventures. In reflecting on his time at Mulgrave, Ali remembers most fondly the long heckling debates in Mr. Anevich’s class and the many interesting rap battles that ensued in the Rap Battle Club. It is to be hoped that he applies the many skills he learnt in these endeavours to his university career. Ali has been accepted at SFU and Western but has decided to study business and political science at UBC, where he was offered a sizeable entrance scholarship through the faculty advising board. Ali’s business acumen and caustic wit will long be remembered and missed at Mulgrave. 17

She was a member of the Junior School band, and throughout her Mulgrave years, was a cast member in multiple school theatre productions. Meridy played on the Volleyball and Basketball teams and participated in the Duke of Edinburgh programme. Meridy was a founding member of the HeadsUp Mental Health Club at Mulgrave and has led the club in her senior years. Meridy’s favourite Mulgrave memories are the numerous opportunities she enjoyed in international service and language immersion trips. These experiences helped Meridy think more critically about world inequities and became the inspiration for her interest in international development as a career path. Next year, as the recipient of the Sussex Excellence Scholarship, Meridy will attend the University of Sussex, majoring in international development.
SO R M EH M OTE VALLI Sormeh joined Mulgrave in Grade 11, and although she has been here for a short amount of time, she has made a huge contribution to our community. Sormeh is a well-rounded student and has been involved in many of the different strand opportunities offered here at Mulgrave, as shown through her involvement with Chamber Choir and the Duke of Edinburgh programme. Her greatest memories over her years at Mulgrave came from her Duke of Edinburgh kayaking trip and the choir trip to Banff for the Canadian Rocky Mountain Festival. As well, Sormeh found working with the Young Readers Club significantly rewarding as she led the team of Middle School students to encourage reading amongst younger students. Sormeh has been accepted to several universities around North America to study english literature, while receiving several entrance scholarships. Sormeh is still deciding between her two top Canadian universities: University of Toronto and McGill.

Her friendly, good nature and enthusiasm for life inspire those who surround her. She is loyal, loving, and energetic towards the matters that mean most to her. Some of these initiatives have been Student Ambassadors, the Student Voice Team, Middle School Action Council, Kids Care Club, and the House Leadership Team. A true team player, Alisha has had a long-standing presence on both the Basketball and Volleyball teams, and she has worked hard on the productions of three Mulgrave theatre performances. One of Alisha’s favourite memories is sitting on a log on the hill with Mr. Cusbert, a quiet space favourited by Junior School students. With options from Waterloo, UBC, Ryerson, and Dalhousie, Alisha has decided to accept Queen’s offer to study environmental management next fall.

KIANA NAR I MAN Kiana joined Mulgrave in Grade 10. She pursued academics with determination and also contributed as a member of the school’s Badminton team. Her strong inclination to make a difference by speaking up and supporting others in the community is highlighted by her membership in the Global Nomads and HeadsUp Mental Health clubs. Kiana was also a leader of the Student Voice Club, which was a fitting role for her as she is a student who does not hesitate to speak up and let her views be known. Her ideas were always carefully considered and delivered with a smile, making it difficult for others to disagree. Her favourite memories at Mulgrave are her Biology class exercise breaks, and the jokes and memes that were circulated during this brief respite from the academic rigour. Kiana intends to study Pharmacy, and with acceptances from universities located in western, central, and eastern Canadian provinces, she has had a lot to consider. She grappled with the decision about where to pursue her degree, finally choosing UBC, where she’s happy to be close to her family and friends. Kiana’s firm, preconsidered decisiveness, and her good sense of humour are bound to serve her well.
R U O KU N ( TO M MY ) N I U Tommy joined Mulgrave in Grade 7 and has made a big contribution to our school. Tommy’s favourite school memory is the Grade 9 trip to Eastern Canada, a trip that provided real-world history learning. After Mulgrave, Tommy will study biomedical engineering and neuroscience at Georgia Tech.

Liliana’s favourite memory of Mulgrave is of her IB exams - the culmination of hours of blood, sweat, and tears. Liliana has been accepted at Queen’s, Western, Ryerson, and the University of Toronto, but her dream was to study at McGill, so next year will see her in Montreal pursuing her interest in international development, political science, or pre-law. Her warmth and upbeat attitude will be missed. 19

She has received offers and several generous scholarships for numerous American universities, including the Maryland Institute of Fine Arts, Otis College of Arts and Design, the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. At present, Jennifer is undecided where she will study, but one thing is sure, she will make a name for herself wherever she goes.
CO LE R A JAN I Cole has been a Mulgravian since Grade 3, though he did spend some time travelling around Asia as part of a family sabbatical and real-world learning experience. Cole is a quietly confident student who doles out his wisdom and personal expertise to those with whom he is close. In fact, it is his role as an advisor to Ali that Cole remembers most fondly: Cole’s greatest and most meaningful contribution was helping Ali create his promotional poster as part of his election to the student board. Ali was chosen to join, so the partnership was fruitful. As someone who is aware of the challenges that face our world due to his international explorations, it is no surprise that he gravitated to the Global Nomad Club where he has generously volunteered his time and energy. Cole is passionate about film, and he was an active member of the Film Club. He plans to continue to pursue that interest by studying film production at Ithaca College in New York next year.

Through her high school years, Madi’s highlight has been qualifying for the National Legion Athletic finals while working on a major commercial. She has received acceptance to an impressive array of universities in Canada, the US, and the UK, and significant scholarships with the University of Chicago, UBC, and McGill. Dale created a mechanical hand for his Grade 10 Personal Project, a fantastic piece of work that took time and thought. This achievement took many hours of hard work and dedication and reflects his dedication to research and application. Dale also enjoyed his time outside of school while involved with programmes at Shad Valley and the Immersive Technology Lab at UBC. He is proud of the work that he did on his Physics Extended Essay, a major piece of research on thrust and ion engines. Dale ultimately wants to study systems engineering at the University of Waterloo, but he will take some time next year to first work on animation at the Vancouver Film School.

She was an important member of the Concert Choir and the Linguistics Club and has been a leader of the Model United Nations. Grace’s contributions to the community also include playing guzheng for Lunar New Year celebrations, and her creativity and artistic talent have been showcased in the writing and illustrations she contributed to The Frog and Flowers literary magazine. Designing her exhibition space for the Group 6 Art Exhibition represented the culmination of her creative development during her time as a Mulgrave student. Grace delighted us with her beautiful artistic creations, such as a favoured piece ‘The Solitude of Schrodinger’s Cat’, featuring a hidden cat. Grace has been accepted into ArtsOne, a small programme that focusses on English, philosophy, and history, where she plans to explore the paths connected to literature at UBC.

Wensen also appreciates the importance of physical activity and the joys of being part of a team, and so he also joined the Rugby Team. Wensen’s favourite memory at Mulgrave was his Extended Essay, into which he invested an enormous amount of time in research, discussion, and writing and is, for him, one of his crowning achievements. Wensen has received numerous university offers, and he has ultimately decided to attend UBC next year.
Y U H EN G WAN G Since joining Mulgrave as a Grade 9 student, Yuheng has been a leader by example. He has set a standard of being true to his passions and has studied independently and deeply, particularly in the sciences. Among numerous science competitions and activities, he has travelled to New Mexico to take part in the Spaceport Rocket Project. He has also acted as Provincial President of the Federation of Canadian Secondary Students, a student-run organisation that strives to support students to develop skills for the future. At Mulgrave, he founded the Mulgrave Gazette and shared his musical skills as a member of our Concert Band. Yuheng has an appreciation for the Humanities, as well. It was the trip to Eastern Canada (with a curricular focus on history) during his first year with us that cemented his most memorable Mulgrave moment. One evening, Yuheng, Irene, and and Mr. Hardy took a walk through Old Quebec City and saw a cannonball in a tree. It was unexpected and is still a vivid memory for him. Yuheng has received offers from Imperial College London, University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, UCSD, and UCSB; he has decided to study chemistry and molecular physics at Imperial College London.
ZI YAN G (S I M O N) WAN G As a member of the Mulgrave community since Grade 4, Simon has transformed from a shy young boy to a K-Pop dance star. A free spirit through and through, Simon is not afraid to express himself and let his true colours shine. This can be seen through his fashionable wardrobe choices, dance moves as part of the K-pop Dance Club, and his varied participation in Mulgrave athletics having been a member of the Rugby, Swim, and Basketball teams. Ultimately, Simon has become a key member of the Mulgrave community. One of Simon’s favourite memories involves the Eastern Canada trip in Grade 9, where by chance, Peter was left sleeping on the bus while the rest of the cohort went to dinner. Don’t worry. Peter made it back. Grade 11 and 12 have been two years of self-realisation regarding his future studies. After much consideration, Simon has decided to study business at UBC’s Sauder School of Business. His dry sense of humour and sharp wit will be missed.

I N G R I D WH ITE Ingrid has been at Mulgrave since Grade 4 and has truly embraced all of the strands of education offered. Her active role in both leadership and athletics was exemplified through her involvement with the Senior School Student Board, MERT, House Leadership, MPS Student Voice, and the Human Rights Club. Ingrid embraced service throughout her time in school and co-chaired a Youth Committee at Lions Gate Hospital. When Ingrid wasn’t teaching herself German, she found time to be involved with school athletics. Running cross country and track and field, and playing basketball and field hockey were some of the activities that Ingrid enjoyed over the years. She co-chaired the Student Board in her final year at Mulgrave and helped define the role for incoming students. Some of Ingrid’s fondest memories include hiking in Ladakh, India and simply spending time with friends and cracking jokes in history class. Ingrid was accepted to many Canadian universities and was offered myriad scholarships to study physiological sciences. In the end, Ingrid has decided to stay in Vancouver and attend UBC to prepare for a future in Medicine.
LU C A S WO N G Although not quite a lifer, Lucas has been part of our school since Grade 5, which makes him a long-term Mulgravian. During that time, Lucas has distinguished himself by his quiet sense of humour and varied interests. An accomplished musician, Lucas plays the piano at a high level. Drawing on his skills and knowledge in the field of technology, he has contributed to his community in many ways, including volunteering to help homeless individuals with technical skills and building computers for sale and donating the proceeds to charitable organisations. As he reflects on his years at Mulgrave, Lucas’ favourite memories were of the two Winter Camps he attended through Outdoor Education. These unique experiences, he says, allowed him to go beyond the classroom and to interact with nature and with his peers. Lucas has received offers from several universities, including the University of California, Riverside, the University of California, Irvine, UBC, and the University of Toronto. Although he has not yet decided where he will pursue his post-secondary education, he plans to study computer science.
KEC H EN G (ALE X ) XI Alex joined Mulgrave in Grade 10, and quickly became an active member of our community. With a passion for debate, Alex became a valued member of the Debate Club. Alex’s favourite memory at Mulgrave revolves around Grade 10 Winter Camp, as it provided him an opportunity to learn how to survive in winter conditions. This experience included learning to build an outdoor stove in the snow. Alex is a positive influence on his peers with a quiet sense of humour that will be missed at our school. On a unique path, Alex will be returning to Singapore upon graduation to begin his National Service in one of the three military branches. Alex hopes to become a doctor after the completion of his full-time military training.

YI K AN G (KEN) YAN G Ken joined Mulgrave in Grade 8. He has made significant contributions to all aspects of school life and in the local community. Some of his community service highlights include being President and Founder of the Rescue Foundation providing medical support for visually impaired children in Pakistan and China, being a Flight Sergeant and Senior Instructor with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets and taking part in the ME to WE service trip to Ecuador. Ken has made many other contributions to school life, including being part of the Badminton Club, Choir, and Band. He has entered a number of business competitions outside of school and organised an internship for himself over the summer break. He is certainly a mover and a shaker. Ken’s favourite memory at Mulgrave was the Eastern Canada trip in Grade 9. Ken has achieved great success in the IB Diploma Programme and has learnt the great skill of managing a large workload and his own stress along the way. Ken has been accepted to New York University (Stern School of Business) to study finance.
XIAOTI N G (SAM) YE Sam joined the Mulgrave community in Grade 8 and quickly became an integral member. He has volunteered his time and efforts as a member of the Student Board and Global Nomads. He has also been the representative of Mulgrave to many prospective and new families as a Student Ambassador. Sam has been a determined and energetic leader of Mulgrave’s Badminton team, although he is perhaps more widely known for his musical pursuits. Here at Mulgrave, he sings in the Chamber Choir and is part of the Jazz Band. Fittingly, his favourite memory of Mulgrave is the work he put into completing his musical compositions for his Personal Project in Grade 10. He based each composition on past memories and worked with professional musicians to overcome artistic and technical challenges. Though his passion and talent for music will always be a part of him, Sam has decided to study business, with a concentration in finance at New York University in the fall.
J I SAN G YO U Jisang joined Mulgrave school as a Grade 4 student; his characteristic focus and dedication to his learning has enriched the community ever since. At Mulgrave, he has served as a leader on the Senior School Service Action Council, exercised his creative might as part of the Jazz Band and in the school’s dramatic productions, and honed his athletic prowess on the tennis courts. Jisang’s passion has been studies in the sciences; he has maintained considerable academic performance in a variety of STEM competitions, placing in the top 20 for the CAP physics exam. Furthermore, he travelled to New Mexico last summer to launch a payload for the UBC rocket team. It has been challenging for Jisang to balance his many interests with his academic pursuits, but he has managed beautifully. His most memorable time with Mulgrave was our trip to Rivers Inlet in his Grade 10 year, particularly the moment when he became so interested in looking at fish with Sam that they capsized their kayak. After receiving offers from Georgia Tech, UIUC, and UCL, Jisang will travel to Korea in the fall to study at the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. 28
AI R U O (I R EN E ) ZHAN G Mulgrave was fortunate to have Irene join our community in her Grade 9 year. Her measured and considerate approach to all she does contributed much to the ethos of both Student Voice and Student Board, where Irene took on leadership roles. Her favourite memory of her time here is from her first year on the Eastern Canada trip. She went on an evening walk with Yuheng and Mr. Hardy through Old Quebec City, and they saw a cannonball lodged in a tree. Here at Mulgrave, she has been a member of the Debate and Public Speaking teams, involved with organising Model United Nations, and she has participated enthusiastically in World Scholar’s Cup. Notably, she has followed her passion for literature and her appreciation of creative expression by cofounding and co-editing The Frog & Flowers, A Literary Journal by and for Students, to which she has been a regular contributor. Her humour, insight, clarity, and creativity are an inspiration to all who know her, students and faculty alike. Her uniqueness and determination has earned her an offer at the University of Oxford, where she will study humanities in the fall.
H O N G R U I (R EED) ZHAN G Reed came to Mulgrave in Grade 9 with a particular interest in science and mathematics, having already won awards in a number of world-class robotics competitions. He was, of course, a welcome addition to Mulgrave’s Robotics Club. One of his favourite memories was when he went to New Mexico with other Mulgrave students to successfully launch a rocket into space as part of a competition. Reed is a tenacious student as demonstrated by the way he handled a setback just before starting his Grade 11 year. Although he was absent for the beginning of the school year and was quite anxious about catching up, he was determined to achieve his goals. To his credit, Reed’s determined spirit paid off and he met his goal, which, not surprisingly, was to pursue rocket science! Reed has received offers from the University of Manchester, University College London, the University of Illinois, UCLA and the University of Southern California. He’s looking forward to starting engineering next year at his chosen school, Imperial College London.
YA S H I (AN D R E W ) ZHAN G Andrew joined the Mulgrave community in Grade 9. During his Middle School days, he always enjoyed participating and cheering for teammates during Battle of the Houses. When he moved into Senior School, Andrew demonstrated what a talented mathematician and determined student he is by choosing to add Further Mathematics to his full course list. In the area of service learning, Andrew was a ME to WE volunteer and participated in the Dominican Republic service trip. During Grades 10 to 12, Andrew actively volunteered with many of his friends to support the Vision Rescue Foundation with fundraising events. During his Senior School years is also when Andrew discovered his love of dance, and he generously shared the joy with his peers at assemblies and celebrations. Andrew’s favourite Mulgrave memory is winning the Talent Show with the K-pop Dance Group! Andrew has received offers from multiple International and US universities and plans to attend NYU to study mathematics in the fall.

She has contributed in many ways to our community through her work for Vision Rescue and as a makeup artist for school productions. She has also enjoyed her involvement in the Outdoor Education programme. Tina counts her most significant achievement as successfully completing the IB programme and graduating from Mulgrave, and this is indeed an accomplishment that represents many hours of dedicated work, study, collaboration, and effort. Tina’s fondest memories of her years at Mulgrave revolve around the friendships she created during her time here. Tina has received offers and scholarships from numerous Canadian universities, including Waterloo, SFU, McGill, and the University of Toronto, but she has decided to pursue her study of business at the Rotman School of Commerce through the University of Toronto. It is clear that Tina will continue to make friends and succeed in her studies in the years to come.
RO N G M EI (C AR R I E ) ZH O U Carrie has been at Mulgrave since Grade 5 and has been engaged with and successful in many aspects of school life. Her service commitments have been very extensive both in and out of school. In school, in addition to being a key member of the Service Action Councils, she has been a very reliable member of Mulgrave’s Emergency Response Team (MERT). Out of school, Carrie has been actively involved in a variety of North Shore charity and volunteer organisations. In athletics, she has been a member of the Badminton team and in the arts has performed with the school Bands and Choirs. Many students and staff in the Mulgrave community will remember Carrie for her leading role in the Mulgrave K-pop Dance Group (also her favourite school memory) and for her compelling TEDx West Vancouver talk about the time she spent volunteering in a local hospice. With her endearing smile, Carrie will be very much missed in the halls of the Senior School. Carrie has received many university offers and has decided to attend the University of Hong Kong where she will study business.
RO N G ZI (AI LEEN) ZH O U Aileen joined Mulgrave along with her twin sister Carrie as a Grade 5 student. During her time here, she has helped to build our school community through her positivity and kindness, most notably when she acted as a valued and enthusiastic Student Ambassador during Open Houses. She participated in WE Day all through Middle School and helped us see the value in visual communication in her role as Visual Arts Prefect in the Senior School. She has also played on the Badminton team as a Senior Student, and she has organised the spirited K-pop Dance Group, a highlight at all Senior School events. Of her time at Mulgrave, Aileen’s favourite memory is having a bonfire while away at camp in Grade 6. Throughout her time here, Aileen has shown herself to be thoughtful, creative, and determined. Aileen’s kind and warm spirit will be shared with the students and faculty of New York University this fall, where she intends to study applied and developmental psychology.

Y U N TI N G (J OAN NA) ZH UAN G Joanna joined Mulgrave in Grade 7. Throughout her time, she has made valuable contributions to the Mulgrave community in the arts, service learning, and athletics. Her commitment to service work is reflected in her successful achievement of Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh awards. In athletics, Joanna was a member of the Badminton and Senior Girls B Volleyball teams. She also kept the school community informed through her writing in the Mulgrave Gazette and Senior School Student Voice. Joanna’s favourite Mulgrave memory is her first philosophy class with Dr. Tabet. Before this class, the topic had always been a mysterious and unfathomable realm to Joanna. During this class, her teacher introduced fundamental concepts and also stimulated her interest in philosophy and academia. This heavily influenced Joanna’s university and future career path. Joanna received offers from International, US, and Canadian universities, and plans to attend the University of Chicago to study philosophy.
