Welcome from the Head of School Dear Carnival goers, Our gala this year, the year of the Rio Olympics, is appropriately along the theme of ‘Carnival’. I feel the words below, from the official Rio Carnival website, accurately set the scene for our own Mulgrave event. The Magic of Carnival in Rio de Janeiro From the beautiful and sexy beaches of Rio de Janeiro to Rio Carnival and the Rio Nightlife, the type of energy that the city of Rio emulates is just simply electrifying. What is even more exhilarating are the deliciously bronzed samba dancers, the pulsating music, the energy and applause of the spectators filled with Cariocas and visitors from around the world who all come to the same place to experience the world famous Rio Carnival. Held every year during the week leading up to Lent, Rio Carnival attracts visitors from all corners of the globe. It is inconceivable to think of Rio without thinking of its unrivalled Carnival. Anticipation builds and the excitement grows as Carnival time gets closer and closer. Without a doubt, this is the favourite holiday celebration in Rio. The city glows with the smiles and energy of the locals — or Cariocas. Samba music can be heard coming from neighborhoods throughout the city and crowds gather to dance and play all day, night and straight into the next morning. It is the inherent spirit of the Cariocas and their true joie de vivre that makes Rio Carnival such a glorious success year after year! Maybe we cannot completely rival the Rio event but we can certainly try. Let’s build our community and our friendships, raise a few dollars for our students and celebrate our great school with the atmosphere of the Rio Carnival. I hope that you have a great night. Thank you to the team who put the Gala together and to all of you here who are supporting this event tonight. Se divertir e desfrutar da sua noite! (Have fun and enjoy your evening)

Welcome To all friends in the Mulgrave community, On behalf of the Board of Directors, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Mulgrave School’s annual Spring Gala! Rio Carnaval, in the Great Hall of our Senior School, will be an evening filled with fun and excitement overlooking the beautiful Vancouver skyline. We all know that events such as the Spring Gala only come together with a tremendous amount of effort and planning over many months. The Mulgrave community of volunteers that work tirelessly on our behalf is truly amazing and we appreciate the hundreds of hours of time that they have committed to making this evening such a great success. A special thank-you to Co-chairs, Brenda Rajani and Shemin Verjee, and all the members of the 2016 Gala Committee for making it happen again! Thank-you as well to the many parents and friends of Mulgrave who have given generously to support our Live and Silent auctions or who have become an Event Sponsor or advertised in our Gala catalogue. Thanks to all of you for making this year’s event yet another successful one! Tonight's a night to have fun, be merry and to make new friends in the Mulgrave community. Enjoy the evening and successful bidding to everyone on those auction items! Cheers,

Harry Wierenga, Chair Mulgrave Board of Directors 12

Welcome! Welcome to Rio Carnaval, Mulgrave’s 22nd annual Spring Gala. It’s our pleasure to present to you an evening of celebration, filled with the music, dance and vivid colours of Brazil. We chose Rio Carnaval for our theme because its lively, spirited nature is apropos for our Mulgrave community celebration. This event is a culmination of the hard work and dedication of so many Mulgrave parents. In true Mulgrave fashion, new, ‘experienced’, and even alumni parents have come together to create an evening of fun and celebration for everyone. As well, Mulgrave faculty members have been invaluable in their support throughout the process, providing guidance and assistance whenever needed. We can’t begin to thank all the parents and faculty who have poured their hearts into making this event a success. We would like to extend a special thanks to John Wray for his leadership and unwavering support. To Mark Steffens, who tirelessly guided us through the process; to Julie DeCooman and Jane Webb who helped with every detail of Gala; and to Elizabeth Calderon, Karem Planas, and Michelle Noble who gave us their marketing expertise, we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. We wish you a wonderful evening, and hope you enjoy the festivities. As the Brazilians say ‘Feliz Carnaval!’.

His warm baritone is among the most recognized voices in popular music and his distinctive style of guitar-playing has been enormously influential. He has sold over 100 million albums throughout his career, beginning in 1968 when he was signed to The Beatles’ Apple Records. He has earned 40 gold, platinum, and multi-platinum awards and five Grammy Awards for a catalog that runs from James Taylor (1968) and Sweet Baby James (1970) to Hourglass (1997) and October Road (2002). Taylor released his breakthrough album Sweet Baby James in 1970. It went triple-platinum and spawned his first top 10 hit, the intensely personal “Fire and Rain.” In 2012, Taylor was awarded the distinguished Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government and in 2011, was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama in a ceremony at the White House. Both medals are their nation’s highest honours for artistic excellence recognizing “outstanding achievements and support of the arts.”

Friends of a Feather Stick Together

Ms. Morag and Mrs. Vodrey’s PK 3 class has created a cheerful piece of art which has been framed and is ready to be hung in your home! Each child and teacher chose a colour of acrylic paint to represent his/her bird. They then applied their thumb print onto the painted wire amidst the sky blue background. These prints were then transformed into beautiful birds using multicoloured acrylic paint with a delicate paintbrush. Your child's name has been inscribed next to their bird using a fine tip marker. This original piece offers a wonderful memory of your child's first year at Mulgrave. “

KM, KJ, KY Each Kindergarten class created a platter that represented an aspect of overarching themes investigated this year: celebrations, growth and goal setting. Each student was able to contribute to the project by using their very own finger to make their mark. The children enjoyed watching the different stages of the platter's creation and hunting for their fingerprint among the larger group. Each child's name is written on the platter in their own handwriting. The children enjoyed the collaborative process and each class platter is truly something special.

The Circles of Light Bind Us All

This art project was designed to have all the children in the classroom be able to express their individuality in a collaborative project. Each student was asked to colour a plastic cup using the colours of their choice. The children were very careful not to mix the colours and to represent a set of either warm or cold colours. The plastic cups were then processed and transformed into colourful concentric circles, arranged into a beautiful array. This piece was inspired by Squares with Concentric Circles (1913) by Kandinsky. Many lessons were achieved with this project: the first one is that children can create beautiful artwork with very simple and inexpensive elements, but using the most important tool that is their imagination. All the students are represented in this artwork and can identify their own concentric circle, but at the same time they belong to a bigger project that is beautiful because all their friends participated too. They also learned about colours and that they can express feelings and states of mind. Finally they learned about colour theory and light. 50

Circles and colours

Inspired by a 1913’s abstract art work by Wassily Kandinsky, the Grade One students created concentric circles of warm or cold coloured plastic glasses which were then processed to be transformed into a fine piece of abstract art. Each student carefully chose a combination of colours colours, which represents the inner beauty of the artist. This project was an excellent opportunity to develop their collaborative skills as each student used his or her own imagination and talent to create this piece of art. They also learned to express their individuality and that each one of them contributed to the wholeness of the project bringing beauty and diversity.

The children enthusiastically jumped into this Kandinsky themed project this year, putting much thought and care into their colour choices before expertly decorating their individual plastic glass. Each cup was then melted to create an even more dynamic concentration of colour. The pieces were then arranged together for a unified expression of creativity from the heart. 52

Vibrant Animals

The students of 2G have created vibrant animals inspired by the illustrations of Eric Carle. The children were excited to learn how to draw a variety of animals for this mural. They enjoyed drawing their animals in pencil, outlining them with thin tipped permanent markers, choosing just the right shades of tissue paper to create the visual impact they desired and, finally, applying Modge Podge to give them a glossy finish. There was a lot of discussion amongst the students regarding who would draw which animals and how to make their animals look just right. Students drew their inspiration from each other, and discussed the resources they consulted. They have created a colourful, lustrous work of art, perfect for a child’s bedroom.

On Thin Ice

Item #1014

On Thin Ice allowed students in 3C, through the medium of magazine strips, to redefine the role of the artist and the creative process, beyond the aesthetic. Children sought to make a statement with their artwork, one that promotes thought and action. Through much discussion, students chose the polar bear as their symbol for global warming. The double entendre of the title speaks to the depleting habitat of the polar bear and to our own precarious future in respect to climate change. The class decided to use the iconic yellow portrait frame of the National Geographic magazine to symbolize the power of storytelling. Math was utilized to enlarge the exact dimensions of the magazine and students experimented with texture and colour throughout the process.

How did we create such a spectacular Gala Art piece, you might be thinking? Well, wonder no more. Since we were learning about commonality, diversity and habitats, Mr. Hinmueller first suggested a forest landscape with birds, but we quickly and unanimously vetoed his suggestion. Instead, we decided on an ocean scene and quickly got to work sorting out blue magazine pictures and cutting them out. With the help of our class parents, we pasted the blue magazine strips on a large board to create the sea background. To make it realistic, we gradually added lighter and lighter blue strips as we moved to the top. We wanted it to look like the sun was shining over the water. Mission accomplished! Next, we sketched a rough copy of our sea creatures on white paper before moving onto a final orange version. Finally, how could we forget? We thoughtfully positioned and glued the sea creatures onto the Gala Art and Ta-da!

The Dots of Knowledge

Item #1016

This is our art piece called ‘The Dots of Knowledge’. When we began the process of designing our Gala Project, we first brainstormed what we wanted to do. As a class, we chose what colour scheme we wanted, in this case, a rainbow coloured background. We took knowledge from the secret pockets of our brains and used it to create an idea of how our brains think. The dots on our Gala Project represent every student. We drew lines and dots that represent us, showing how our minds function and make connections. After a deep discussion about the placement of our dots, we chose to do a spiral design because we always start to learn something new and expand on it. We would like to thank the parents that helped us construct the background of the art piece, we could not have done it without them. We hope you enjoy our Gala Project; we sure did!

4M students created a stained-glass masterpiece that brightens any room on a typical Vancouver day! Natural colours and the collaborative tree design, combined with the vivid hues of individually designed leaves make 4M’s art piece truly “one-of-a-kind”. As each child added unique designs to the project, classmates keenly observed their tree’s transformation. The culminating magic was when the class observed the drying wet paints changing their art into a translucent, richly coloured tree enlivened by solar rays. The great tree represents the class as a whole as well as each individual child. It shows how the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

Zentangle Composition in Pink, Purple and Blue Mona ‐ I have learned from doing my Zentangle that I will be able to apply the lessons I learned for the rest of my life. First, I will be able to understand how important it is to focus. I used to be easily distracted, and when I realized I had made too many mistakes, I focussed on my second one and ignored the other thoughts in my head, completing my Zentangle. Also, I can use the patterns I drew and work I did in my stories. I now know how hard it is to do certain things and how much work is put into them, and I can apply that hardship in my writing, along with the surging feeling of triumph and pride when you finally finish.

Ryan ‐ The process of making the Zentangles was a fun and excit ing experience. It opened up opportunities of exploring a different part of art. As I was making my Zentangle I looked at the different patterns and challenged myself to more intricate and complicated patterns. My drawing came out beautiful, especially how I had transitioned the red to the orange. I thought that the colours being blended together made up the beauty of the Zentagle designs. Looking back on my art I was satisfied with the work and effort that I put into my Zentangles designs. Moving forward I would like to start using Zentangles more in my life because I think that they are fun and relaxing to draw and improve your art skills."

Zentangle Composition in Red, Orange and Yellow

Kamran: "I think that the process of my Zentangle was hard. I had lots of difficulty making it...... That's why I did not stop till I got it right. I made 6 zentangles and on the 7th one I was right. This was the one I chose. It was great!‌‌ Challenges that I had were the ability to keep things neat and tidy. A lot of my designs were messy and out of order. That's why I had made all of those zentangles.... I am satisfied with my work and am willing to keep up the good work. This has pushed me so far in art and to have the ability to make this kind of creation is amazing."

Vanessa L: "First, I designed the zentangles, using the zentangle book. It took longer than I expected but I was very satisfied with the result. Overall, the process of making zentangles was very fun and I really enjoyed it. In my opinion, I was very successful in the process of making it because it was really calm( like zen) and it was really cool to design it and compare the beginning to the end; so you can see how it changes."

Mira: "During the planning of my reflection I had lots of fun exploring different zentangles and trying different ideas. Creativity was the key when planning four different designs. While I was planning, I had to find different patterns from books and pictures from the internet. I really let my imagination and creativity go to work. I think that my finished piece turned out well. The color I was assigned to draw my zentangle with, matched the style of my work of art. I had many successes during this process. ..... I overcame my challenges by thinking "out of the box". Overall, I think that my imagination was the key to creating my zentangle piece"

70

Tristan: "While I was doing my zentangle designs, there was a lot going on. During the process of my planning, my mind was full because I didn't know what zentangles to do! Some zentangles I can can draw and others I can't. One of my successes were overcoming the obstacle of not believing my self which put me in a "can't do anything " situation. One of my challenges was keeping all of my couple ring in side the lines and to keep all the lines super straight and that threw me off because I focused more on the straight line when I should have focused on the zentangle. Overall my zentangle was a huge success.

It Takes A Village

We are truly grateful to everyone who stepped forward to lend a hand. The evening could not have happened without the support of our Mulgrave parent community. Our sincere apologies for any errors or omissions. This year we were fortunate to have a group of volunteers tackling the job of formatting and editing the Gala Catalogue rather than engaging the services of professional typesetters and designers. We apologize for any editing and formatting errors which may have been overlooked.
