Welcome Welcome to Spring For Mulgrave - our 20th Annual Gala - a time honoured tradition that serves to unite the Mulgrave community in friendship and celebration. It has truly been a pleasure to be your Gala Co-Ordinators this year and we thank you for the opportunity. We owe an enormous debt and gratitude to our amazing Gala Committee, without whom we simply could not get this job done. Being new to our roles as Co-Ordinators, we have both come to realize that pulling off a successful Gala is a phenomenal team effort. We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated and supportive team who kept us on track and helped make this whole experience a fun and positive one. You are an amazing group of people and Gala absolutely could not have happened without you. We would also like to extend a huge thank you to all the volunteers who have helped in so many ways. Once again Gala's success is because of you. Our heartfelt thanks to John Wray and Mark Steffens for their constant assistance and cooperation and the entire administrative staff for letting us and our team invade their territory on a daily basis. The level of support was above and beyond anything one could ever expect. To all of you, we thank you from the very bottom of our hearts. Please relax, enjoy the evening and most importantly,
HAVE FUN!! Co-Ordinators, Spring Gala 2014

Remembering
Roshan Thomas
Roshan Thomas, a member of the Mulgrave community, was tragically slain in a terrorist shooting in Kabul in March 2014. We are all deeply saddened at this loss. Roshan was the founder of Sparks Academy in Kabul, and worked closely with us to bring Afghan students to Mulgrave to earn their IB Diplomas with the goal of returning to Afghanistan to improve the lives of children in their communities through education. Roshan believed passionately in the power of education to transform lives. Roshan also made a home away from home for three Mulgrave students. In honour of Roshan’s work to create a better world through education, Mulgrave has named the Afghan s c h o l a r s h i p p ro g r a m m e “ T h e Ro s h a n T h o m a s Scholarship.”

Welcome from Head of School Communities are built from a sense of common purpose and the myriad of positive and respectful relationships that exist between community members. At Mulgrave, we are fortunate to have a unifying common purpose – the outstanding education of our children – as well as strong relationships between and amongst families, teachers and the wider school community. Our community works hard together to support our school in its quests to ‘inspire excellence in education and life‘ and to be the best IB school in the world; however, we cannot be complacent and we need to continue to utilize our collective experience, skills and resources to achieve our goals. Our community is strong too but communities are like relationships and there is a need to continue to invest in them, in order to ensure that the community remains vibrant and strong. Part of that investment involves the welcoming and assimilation of new families into our sense of common purpose and our shared value system that both sit at the heart of what we do. Strong communities do more than simply work hard together. Like families, they find moments to play together and strengthen their bonds through shared experiences that bring them pleasure and fulfillment. The annual Spring Gala tonight provides us a chance to do just that. As always, this is an opportunity not only to connect with friends and community members that we know, but also to meet members of the community who are new or whom you do not know…yet. Please go out of your way tonight to connect with someone from outside of your circle of friends and acquaintances. Thank you, thank you, to the amazingly large team who have put the Gala together. You have done so much work to make this special evening possible. While our prime goal tonight is community building, I hope that we can also raise a few dollars to put towards the construction of our exciting new senior school facility. Have a great evening and very warm regards,

Welcome To all friends in the Mulgrave community, It is my pleasure to welcome you to Mulgrave School’s annual Spring Gala! This year’s Spring for Mulgrave Gala 2014, our 20th Anniversary celebration, is sure to be an evening filled with fun and excitement. It’s hard to believe that as a community of Mulgrave families, we have been doing this for 20 years! I remember attending one of the first Gala’s and thinking at the time what an incredible amount of energy and effort must have gone into organizing such a wonderful event. True to Mulgrave tradition, this year is no exception! As you look through the auction catalogue, both online and printed, see the many donations made by the very generous families and friends of Mulgrave, look around at the beautifully decorated ballroom, you have to agree that Grace Chasmar and Dar Clark Hole, our Gala Coordinators and their fabulous team have done it again - created another memorable evening for us all to enjoy! The community of volunteers that work tirelessly on our behalf is truly amazing and we appreciate the hours of time that they have committed to making this evening such a great success. Thank-you Grace and Dar and your Gala team for making it happen again!!! Thank-you as well to the many supporters who have provided such wonderful auction items including the always popular Mulgrave Gala Select. Tonight is a night to have fun, be merry and to make new friends in the Mulgrave community. Enjoy the evening and successful bidding to everyone on those auction items! Cheers,
Harry Wierenga, Chair On behalf of the Board of Directors Mulgrave Independent School Society 7

Class 1Y. “Canadian Inspiration” 1010
Priceless
We asked the smart, creative and wonderful children of 1Y to draw a picture based on what inspires them about Canada. Each picture was then turned into a “stained glass panel” and framed together to create an amazing art piece. The panels – independently and collectively - represent what the children see, feel and experience from our immense territory of majestic beauty. Created By:

Class 2C. “Under the Sea” 1011
Priceless
The Grade 2C students created an underwater scene using sea glass made from recycled bottles. The children brought in bottles and helped smash them into little pieces. After a few days in a rock tumbler the glass was smooth. The children each chose a sea animal that they like, drew the shape and filled it with sea glass to create their animal. The end result is a stunning underwater scene of colorful fish, sea stars, turtles and jelly fish. Created By:

Every day, the students of 2M look out of their classroom and see the beautiful ocean and the City of Vancouver. We get to see majestic sunrises, blankets of fog and crashing blue waves of water. We have used the spectacular view outside our classroom as inspiration for the 2014 Gala Project. In our masterpiece, you can see white glass pieces which represent puffy white clouds, fog and mist, as well as different shades of blue which represent the rolling waves of the water below. Grade 3 spent time reflecting on what it means to be Canadian. We have come to a new level of appreciation and wonder for the vast landscapes that surround us. Wikipedia defines a 'manifesto' as a published verbal declaration of the intentions, motives or views of the issuer, be it an individual, group, political party or government. The students of 4E set out to find the words that best describe their spirit and ethics and have etched them in a series of beautiful copper plates symbolizing the forever engraining of their manifesto into their hearts and minds. Priceless
The children in Ms. Karam's class have created a beautiful and unique piece of art which showcases their individual artistic ability as well as the connections they have made to their latest Unit of Inquiry, Native American culture. Each child has drawn a beautiful animal in the style of the Native American genre of art. Some of the animals depicted are orca whales, bears, eagles, birds, squirrels and fish. After they completed their drawings on a piece of copper sheet, each child bathed their copper sheet in a chemical bath to create a permanent etch of their artwork onto the copper.
