However, as we do develop further, we are determined to keep fee increases at a reasonable level through careful planning, efficient operation and further income generation to support our operational costs. As we move forward we want to continue to engage our community of students, staff and parents in not only the new developments, but also how we continue to improve our current provision. Without a doubt, it is they, who on a day-to-day basis, make the school the special place it is. I am extremely grateful to them for their skills and commitment to our school.

MISSION, VALUES AND VISION

Meeting Our Mission

Our Values

Our Mission and Vision

Who we are

The Mulgrave Report to the Community celebrates our achievements and examines how we meet our mission as an educational institution. This annual publication is distributed to current parents, alumni and staff. The 2010–2011 Report covers the school year starting in September, 2010 and ending October, 2011. This report contains only a small selection of our collective achievements. We hope you enjoy reading it, and we welcome your feedback.

At Mulgrave we believe:

Inspiring Excellence in Education and Life

• Mulgrave is a co-ed, non-denominational International Baccalaureate (IB) World School serving the North Shore of Vancouver.

• Individual values are based on personal integrity and acting with respect towards others. • Our sense of community and friendship is founded on humility, empathy, commitment and inclusion. • Lifelong learning is built upon curiosity, creativity and innovative thinking. • A global perspective and environmental and social responsibility are central to becoming true world citizens. • All members of our community strive for balance and understand that striving for one’s personal best should be enjoyable.

By inspiring excellence – the continuous pursuit of personal best – in education and life, Mulgrave strives to equip lifelong learners to thrive in a culturally diverse and interdependent world and to embrace, with passion and confidence, their responsibility always to do their best to support others and to make a difference by serving their communities, both locally and in the world at large.

• As an independent day school with a reputation for academic excellence, we offer the IB curriculum in Pre-K through to Grade 12 in a spectacular West Vancouver setting: - Primary Years Programme (Pre-K to Grade 6) - Middle Years Programme (Grade 7 to 10) - Diploma Programme (Grade 11 and 12) • Academic, athletic, artistic and service opportunities comprise the four strands of a Mulgrave education. Our well-being is celebrated, but giving back and supporting both local and international projects are an integral part of our community.

The Mulgrave Difference • Skilled, caring and committed teachers • Small class sizes, consisting of three classes per grade • Outstanding university preparation • Well-rounded education with a focus on personal growth • Innovative school focused on 21st century growth • Key features include Mandarin and IT “ We love the community feel that has been created jointly by administration, teachers, as well as families. We are new to Mulgrave this year and were immediately welcomed into a warm and nurturing culture which is just as important as its focus on academic excellence. Our daughter loves Mulgrave and we can already see her thriving in her learning. Her classroom is stimulating, vibrant and has professional, caring teachers.” — Mulgrave Parent

Mulgrave 2020 Strategic Plan Under the direction of the School Board, a strategic planning exercise was carried out this past year by John Wray and the Strategic Planning Steering Group. The process included intensive consultation across all sectors of our community. These consultations provided for a rigorous analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of Mulgrave and a review of its strategic fundamentals within the framework of the school’s history, current identity and local context. This feedback, combined with key considerations of top educational trends worldwide, has led to the development of a strategic plan for Mulgrave. The plan, Mulgrave 2020: from Good to Great, has eight key focus areas.

The Eight Focus Areas

Next Steps

1. Personalisation of Learning, Support and Curriculum

Mulgrave 2020 is a clear, bold vision for the future of our school. We are currently working on detailed action plans underpinning each goal and the details of a new facilities enhancement plan. In the next year, with the support of our community, we hope to embark on a major Capital Campaign, the first ever in Mulgrave’s remarkable journey. With the energy of a new era of leadership and a fresh vision, we hope to take

Our Community The spirit of community is alive and well at Mulgrave School. It is through the sheer hard work and dedication of our students, staff and parents that Mulgrave continues to excel on a world stage. Staff

Students

Mulgrave is blessed with an outstanding teaching faculty. Talented and world class in every sense, our teachers are IB teaching professionals who are passionate about what they do. Feedback from parents says it all:

Inspiring excellence in education and life is our mission and we go to great lengths to ensure our students get the individual guidance, care and support they need in all four strands of a Mulgrave education. We help them achieve their personal best from the minute they walk through our school doors.

“The best things about Mulgrave are first and foremost the FANTASTIC teachers and administration; the nurturing environment and caring culture; the strong sense of community and multiculturalism; the way the teachers prepare our kids to be global citizens; and the excellence in all spheres of learning, academics as well as the arts.” – Mulgrave Parent “The best thing about Mulgrave is the joy of learning our children have. They are given the opportunity to thrive in an encouraging, supportive and nurturing environment. The bond and relationship built between teachers and our children brings out the best in them to achieve greater results.” – Mulgrave Parent 8

Parents

MVP

Board of Directors

ALUMNI

Parents are key partners in the shared care and success of our students. We value their input and work collaboratively to help our students reach their potential. Whether involved in social events, volunteering in the library, or cheering on our teams, our parents share the Mulgrave vision of inspiring excellence in education and life. They are an integral part of our Community Spirit.

The Mulgrave Volunteer Parents Association – better known as the MVP – helps coordinate all approved parent volunteer and fundraising activities with the school. Working together with faculty, staff and parents, the MVP’s primary goal is to sustain Mulgrave’s sense of community and foster a broad-based spirit of participation. Through this volunteer group, the school is able to utilise the enormously varied and wonderful talents of hundreds of parents throughout the year for the considerable benefit of Mulgrave students.

The Board of Directors is entrusted to operate and run the school on behalf of the Mulgrave Independent School Society. There are twelve members of the Board and each Director is elected for a threeyear term. The Mulgrave Board of Directors as of September 1, 2011:

Graduates of Mulgrave School have flourished and gone on to many different parts of the world to work and study. It is always wonderful to hear of all their news and superb achievements. Each December, we look forward to welcoming them back to the school for an alumni event. It is our goal to further develop and engage alumni in more schoolhosted events in the coming years.

Curriculum and Academic Performance Mulgrave offers the International Baccalaureate programme to all students. We believe the IB is undoubtedly the best educational programme available in the world today to help prepare our students to face the challenges of the 21st century. It is through an IB education that we can equip our students to become true global citizens and develop the skills and qualities to thrive in their future lives. The three IBO programmes are: • Primary Years Programme (Pre-K to Grade 6) • Middle Years Programme (Grade 7 to 10) • Diploma Programme (Grade 11 and 12)

All of the programmes (PYP, MYP and DP) purposefully help students develop the skills and attitudes required for them to be contributing and responsible members of their local and global communities. The fundamental belief of the IB is that we can create a better world through education. Achievement Results Our results for 2010/2011 are strong overall and continue to show improvement in several areas. Provided here is a brief overview of examination results.

Outdoor Education

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Mulgrave offers a rich variety of athletic opportunities. Our teams play in leagues with both local and other independent schools, and belong to a number of different organisations including BC School Sports, the Independent Schools Athletic Association (ISAA) and the Independent Schools Elementary Association (ISEA). Our coaches support students as they strive for individual excellence. At the same time, great emphasis is placed on sportsmanship, leadership, team play and respect for others. We offer the following athletic programmes:

Sr. Girls Basketball Lower Mainland Champions, ISAA Champions and 6th place finish at the Provincials

Mulgrave’s Global Outreach programme is more than just international trips. We are a K-12 global citizenship programme that facilitates global awareness, engagement and experiential service learning through the classroom, community, and excursions, including international trips. We embrace the 21st century ideal of “global citizenshift” — the need for greater mindful, active and compassionate engagement in social and environmental responsibility as true world citizens. Below is a list of organisations with whom we are involved:

Through multi-sensory learning in nature-based contexts, Mulgrave’s Outdoor Education programme builds resilience in its students, along with an appreciation for our world class natural surroundings and the skills to actively participate in, and advocate for, our remarkable local region. Starting with an overnight ‘camp’ at the school for Grade 3s, the programme is designed to take students through a progression of physical and mental challenges which are authentic and age appropriate. Facing and overcoming such challenges build positive self-esteem by demonstrating to participants they can thrive in a variety of physical and social environments.

Founded in 1956 by Prince Philip, this worldwide programme of distinction allows youths to develop a sense of responsibility to themselves and to their community. The programme requires four areas of participation: community service, expeditions and exploration, skills development, and physical fitness. At Mulgrave, we currently have over 50 students actively participating and our OE programme provides adventurous journeys at all three award levels. These trips are planned, organised and implemented by the students.

Student Life

Our Divisions

Listening to the voices of our students in improving the quality of education at our school is a very important part of who we are. Senior School students as Prefects and House Captains hold positions of considerable influence in the school. During the year we have begun to build on a structured approach to student voice by ensuring we engage students much more dynamically in dialogue and feedback about the quality of teaching and learning at the classroom level. This will continue to be an important focus for 2011-2012.

Thank you to our 2010-11 Donors The support of our community over and above the tuition fee is what enables Mulgrave to deliver on an uncompromising standard of excellence. As a non-profit organisation, the school relies on charitable giving. Strong support for its Annual Giving Programme and Spring Gala ensures that Mulgrave is able to attract and to retain the best teachers, to keep class sizes down and to provide enriched curricular and co-curricular programming. We warmly recognise and thank the following families for their generous support in the past year:
