Letter from Our Head of School, John Wray Dear Members and Friends of the Mulgrave Community, As we commence our 25th year of ‘Inspiring Excellence in Education and Life’, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the many individuals who have contributed to our strong foundation and rich history. Our founding families and educators set us on a path that has allowed us to achieve much in a very short time. They have also left us with a legacy that we have the responsibility to nurture and evolve. The pages of this annual report showcase some of the ways in which we have continued to live out our mission in the last year. The engaged students and committed teachers and parents that are highlighted in our pictures illustrate the high level of dedication that we all embody. The facts and figures within, to a certain extent, quantify the areas in which we excel: university placements, IBDP results, athletic titles, art competitions, fiscal responsibility, and much more. But what cannot be captured through statistics or images is the strong sense of obligation to the world that we have as a community of leaders, learners, and stewards of a fragile and ever-changing world. In the fall of 2018, to launch our anniversary celebrations, we invited Julie Ann Wrigley, a John Wray
remarkable philanthropist and businesswoman, to speak with our students and share her passion for sustainability. Julie exemplifies the values and characteristics of a true IB learner. She is a balanced thinker who takes a multi-disciplinary, collaborative approach to creating solutions that are creative and beneficial to both society and the environment. As we look forward to our next 25 years, Julie’s words encourage us to remain agile and open to change, knowing that we cannot

fully anticipate what the future will hold but that if we “keep our heads up and our hearts open,” we can serve the needs of the people and the planet. This is part of who we are as Mulgravians: individuals who come together to better understand varied perspectives and contribute our innate gifts and valuable time to making a positive difference in the world. The qualities that define us – inclusive, respectful, creative, committed and humble - are some of the the values that lie at the heart of a Mulgrave education and should be nurtured, for they translate into skills that will serve our children well for years to come. Thank you for being part of Mulgrave’s journey and for committing so wholeheartedly to the work that we do every day to inspire our students to reach their personal best. I look forward to our continued partnership and to celebrating many more milestones together.

Letter from Our Board Chair, Harry Wierenga Dear Friends and Members of the Mulgrave Community, Congratulations to all Mulgravians, past and present! We are currently immersed in our silver anniversary, and we have so much to celebrate. I would like to add my gratitude to John’s and thank all of the parents, students, faculty, staff, and alumni for your contributions. Collectively, we have transformed our little school in the ‘hut’ into a leading IB school with a growing international reputation. We have had our challenges along the journey, but what has always been consistent is our focus on providing our students with a broad and holistic liberal arts foundation, enhanced by a wide array of enrichment opportunities, and bolstered by a community of incredibly dedicated teachers and parents. As a Board, we have been focussed this past year on a variety of strategic fronts while also overseeing the construction of the West Wing and the MPower campaign. It is exciting to see the progress that has been made in just over 16 months. We will soon experience the positive impact that this new space will have on our students’ learning, and I am certain that everyone Harry Wierenga
in our community will benefit from access to the spacious art and design studio, flexible classrooms, learning commons, and beautiful playgrounds. I would like to thank everyone who has been involved with the building. As a school, we have raised over $9.0m for the campaign, and I am grateful to all of the generous parents who have helped us to fund this important project. This annual report looks back on our community’s achievements of the past year; it reminds us
Chair of Mulgrave’s
that we have much to be proud of, but it also gives us an opportunity to look forward and renew

our commitments as we head into our next quarter century. We continue to reach even higher levels of excellence as illustrated through our students’ outstanding achievements and by the increasing demand for places. But as is always the case with Mulgrave, it is not in our nature to rest on our laurels. We are actively implementing our 2016-2020 strategic plan ‘Making Mulgrave Everything We Can Be’ and are certain that we will continue to see its impact on every child. The initiatives that we have started and those that are in the works will benefit every student in the school. We look forward to reporting on these gains and to partnering with you as we all work to provide our students with the best possible future-focussed education.

Inspiring Excellence in Education and Life
Who We Are

As an independent day school with a reputation for academic excellence and for providing a broad, holistic education, we offer the IB curriculum from preschool through Grade 12 in a spectacular West Vancouver setting: • Primary Years Programme (PK to Grade 5) • Middle Years Programme (Grades 6 to 10) • Diploma Programme (Grades 11 and 12) Academic, athletic, artistic, and service & leadership opportunities comprise the four strands of a Mulgrave education, and they are enriched by a robust
outdoor education programme that strengthens our students’ connection to and respect for our natural world. Our well-being is celebrated, and giving back and making a difference through both local and international projects are integral elements of the Mulgrave experience.

Strategic Plan Update 2017—2018 The strategic plan Mulgrave 2020: Making Mulgrave Everything We Can Be was approved by the Mulgrave Board of Directors in May 2016. It established ambitious goals to further develop our already outstanding education programme.
We aim to make our education more: • Personalised (learning, curriculum and support) so that all students can achieve their potential academically and ultimately access a range of university options • Enriched with 21st century skills so that students can further systematically develop these key life skills for the future that will differentiate them from other academic high flyers • Applied to authentic real world contexts so that students are able to apply their skills in authentic contexts and further develop an understanding of concepts and ideas in a real world setting • Extended through enhanced co-curricular provision so that students can pursue their interests and passions, further develop their skills and establish lifelong interests and commitments • International so that students can live and work happily and successfully in a range of cultures and countries... to prepare our children to lead fulfilled, successful and meaningful lives in the rapidly changing, international world mid-21st century. In the second year of our strategic plan, we began work on a number of long-term changes, as well as implemented some more immediate improvements. We have been working on a number of fronts but included here are some of the educational development highlights from various divisions of the school.

We are incredibly grateful for their consistent participation and support.
Inspiring excellence in education and life is our mission. We go to great lengths to ensure our students receive the personalised guidance, care, and support they need to find their passions, become lifelong learners, and grow into their roles as stewards of a changing world. Global Engagement & Service Learning PASSPORT: EXPERIENCE – ENGAGE – EVOLVE
DP CAS CAPSTONE: CREATIVITY, ACTIVITY, SERVICE & MORE
Passport is the hub of student experiential and service learning beyond the classroom. It the home of real-world learning via application, extension, enrichment and engagement that we feel will give our students the breadth and depth to find their place and change their world. The Passport programme provides students with opportunities to engage in a range of learning and leadership experiences outside the classroom. It is also a place to unveil, highlight, and recognise successes and achievements across school, community and beyond, locally and globally, within a broader set of areas or domains: Leadership, Personal Health and Wellness, Global Intercultural, Creativity, Activity, Service and Academics & Projects. This showcase of learning will also become part of our students’ annual Record of Achievement (RoA). Through the evidence that students share, they will illustrate their learning in the skill areas that we believe are vital to prepare our students to lead fulfilled, successful, and meaningful lives in the rapidly changing, international world mid-21st century.
At the heart of Mulgrave’s service and leadership initiatives is the CAS Capstone programme, an integral part of the DP curriculum that inspires students to become engaged in local and global creative pursuits, citizenship and student voice, physical activity and wellness, and service learning and volunteerism. The CAS Capstone also fits within a larger framework of the Mulgrave Passport, which seeks to engage students in a broader, deeper and authentic range of critical 21st century skills and experiences beyond CAS, including leadership and intercultural awareness. Finally, the CAS Capstone incorporates our commitment to getting students out into the real world where they can explore different personal and/or professional interests and extend their graduation portfolio for university applications. As students engage in CAS Capstone commitments, they participate in service as leaders who actively build community by connecting with others and striving to become compassionate, altruistic global citizens. LEADERSHIP A familiar adage states: “Leadership is about action, not position.” At Mulgrave, leadership is not a title nor is it exclusive. Our goal is to open doors and get students involved in ‘learning to lead’ from different places and spaces of interest. Leadership encompasses a broad spectrum of student engagement across the strands in arts, athletics, student voice, service, outdoor education, school clubs, community volunteerism, and other school partnerships. This year, we again focussed on developing community engagement through enhancing student voice, building a more distributed leadership model for youth, and refining our efforts to support mental health and wellness, inclusivity, intercultural understanding and global engagement. The following captures the breadth of leadership teams in the school:

“ I have been fortunate to be part of many service and leadership teams throughout my years at Mulgrave. Volunteerism and altruism are two of the values instilled in me from a young age, and Mulgrave has provided many opportunities for me to grow and flourish in those areas. I have been involved in many initiatives that have helped to bring awareness to important causes, but the added benefit was that my participation allowed me to explore different leadership roles and enabled me to develop my skills as both a leader and team member.” Celina Manji 25
GEx Global Experiential Learning Expeditions: “Educate. Engage. Change.” Our Global Experiential Learning Expeditions (GEx) programme is a comprehensive global engagement and service learning leadership initiative for all students in the Middle School. In Grades 8 and 9, the programme focuses on a service learning ‘week without walls’ that takes place in May. The programme also includes a critical pre- and post-experience leadership and learning modules. All students are required to participate in an innovative multi-grade global or local GEx Expedition. As well, our Grade 7 students embark on a GEx Engage week of experiential learning at school beyond the regular curriculum and classroom, facilitated by our educational partners. The focus is on social entrepreneurship, design thinking, and global citizenship.
and Mulgrave’s vision and values. We want our GEx expeditions to nurture student self-awareness and understanding about others, generate action on collaborative global or local projects, and develop important dispositions as global citizens such as open-mindedness, empathy, humility, innovation, and intercultural understanding. When students return home or to school, they are ready to put their learning into practice as true world citizens. Mulgrave’s GEx programming is supported through our partnerships with Me to We, Insight Global Education, Educational Excursions, The JUMP! Foundation, PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs, and several local organisations involved in service and social good on Vancouver’s Eastside.
The goals of this innovative programme are to enable students to expand their educational experiences beyond the classroom, develop and apply real-world skills, and engage in meaningful and impactful global-local learning. The GEx Expeditions and Engage programmes embody our school commitment to social good and the ethos of service, which is at the heart of the IB
In 2018, students in Grades 8 and 9 had the opportunity to engage in global and local service learning in the following locations: • Tanzania • China • Costa Rica • Thailand
• Yukon • Vancouver Island • Squamish • Vancouver Downtown Eastside
“The language programme at Mulgrave has enabled me to study multiple languages in classes that always provide the right challenge. I’ve had the opportunity to travel to both China and France to apply the classroom skills to real world, where I’ve gained confidence to actively participate in both the multicultural student body here at Mulgrave and in the cultural mosaic of the world.” Henry Spencer

International-Mindedness
Service Learning and International Experiences
At the centre of a Mulgrave education is our desire for students to become true global citizens. We want our students to acquire the personal and social intercultural competencies and dispositions that will allow them to thrive and be happy wherever in the world they find themselves. In addition to embracing a whole-school approach to teaching global citizenship, we offer opportunities for students to immerse themselves in other cultures through language, foreign exchange programmes to France and China, GEx service learning expeditions, and more.
Through the global-local GEx Expeditions that we offer, our students have the opportunity to experience life outside of their immediate community and Canadian contexts. This allows students to learn important lessons about ‘our own backyard’ and the socioeconomic and geopolitical factors that affect our world. The sense of empathy, connection and intercultural awareness that results from these new and diverse experiences further enables young students to develop a global perspective and empowers them as future stewards of our world.
Language Learning Speaking more than one language enables students to form cross-cultural bonds by facilitating empathy and better communication. With this in mind, Mulgrave has designed a comprehensive language programme with specialist teachers in French, Mandarin, and Spanish. We are proud to offer a strong language programme that helps support our mission and vision to equip lifelong learners to thrive in a culturally diverse and interdependent world.
Our exchange trips to France and Shanghai give participating students the chance to immerse themselves in the language and culture they have been studying. The opportunity to apply their learning in an authentic context brings their classroom experiences to life.
Community Celebrations Mulgrave’s sense of community and friendship is founded on empathy, inclusion, and humility. Our values are rooted in an understanding of our own and our indigenous cultures, a global perspective, and a commitment to social responsibility. Our community comes together throughout the year to learn and celebrate together through events like Nowruz/Navroz and Lunar New Year celebrations, global lunches, as well as exhibits and performances focussed on art and music from around the world. As a result, we strengthen our ties to each other while equipping our students to thrive in a culturally-diverse world. 27

MPower Campaign Our hearts are filled with gratitude for all of the parents and friends of Mulgrave who contributed to the over $9m raised over the past 18 months. Mulgrave’s annual operating budget covers the day-to-day expenses of the school, but in order to fund additional initiatives – from buildings to scholarships - we rely on the generosity of our community.

Though we have reached even higher levels of excellence over the past several years, we are not content to remain static. We have exciting plans and initiatives connected to our strategic plan ‘Making Mulgrave Everything We Can Be’ and your help in making them a reality is appreciated.
West Wing Extension In December 2018, we will celebrate the opening of our West Wing. These new learning and play spaces will have a lasting and measurable impact on our students and teachers. Our preschool and Middle
School students will be able to enjoy the use of custom-built classrooms and common spaces that are flooded with light and provide stunning views to Downtown Vancouver, Howe Sound, and beyond.
The spacious art and design studio will give our Upper School students a place to apply their creative skills and engineer whatever their imaginations conceive. The new playgrounds on the rooftop and main floors will have tricycle paths, climbing structures, and many places for exploration. This 26,000 square foot addition to our
campus is a gift to our community, and we thank everyone involved in the construction.

Thank you, Mulgrave!
FOUNDATION BOARD
Our 2017–18 fiscal year brought with it tremendous support from our community for the new West Wing Extension. The West Wing will create new spaces or preschool, Middle, and Senior School students and make room for renovations to existing Junior School spaces. Construction is on target for the grand opening at our 25th Anniversary celebration on December 20, 2018.
Tony Allard
As an independent school, Mulgrave has always relied on the generosity of our community to ensure that we are able to deliver transformative educational experiences to our students. Every single gift is meaningful and significant to us. Thank you all for investing in our future and for empowering Mulgrave students to become global citizens and leaders.

Our roots were humble, but the vision was not. Adapted from Founding Head Linda Hamer’s Grace Assembly Address (June 2018) Today, we are taking a journey backward in time when Mulgrave School was merely a possible prospect and not a reputable reality. A quarter of a century has passed since a group of determined
parents met to mull over their idea of funding another independent school of excellence on the North Shore. The fledgling Board chose to open the as yet unnamed school in a portable classroom, on land owned by the West Vancouver Unitarian Church. The portable was grey outside; it leaked, the heating system was temperamental, it had certainly seen better days. There was no playing field, there was no library, there was no gym, and there certainly was no technology. But, what we had was a clear vision, a unique philosophy, a lionhearted Board, indefatigable parents and students that were curious and ready to learn.
Turning a vision into reality is a monumental task which involves collaboration, mutual respect, selflessness, sacrifice, consciousness, integrity, trust, and, above all, faith in the vision statement of the school. And, thanks to our magnificent Boards, unbelievable parents, dedicated teachers we did just that. So it is that we are here today, twenty-five years later, still innovating, still dynamic, and still essentially Mulgrave, being the best we can be.
Founding a new school was a risky, tenuous business. Our roots were humble, but the vision was not.
