fair porch again!”?
As a teacher and a director, I have a history of choosing pieces that provide students an opportunity to explore a serious issue and an acting challenge. This year, I felt it was time for something lighter, a musical melodrama. Generally, people love musicals. Nothing can be lighter and more fun than the over-the-top performance of a melodrama. The acting, however, is still a challenge for the students as it requires a very physical and exaggerated acting style. Furthermore, there is the added challenge of singing and dancing. My hope is to provide a thoroughly entertaining show that challenges the actors but also provides a lighthearted feel and fun experience. What can be more fun than a play that has lines like “Curses!”, “I feel a swoon coming on!” and “Never darken my
This year, we have also returned to the One Act Festival format, similar to 2009. As a department, we discussed the merit of providing more opportunity for student involvement with this particular format. There are students from Grades 7 to 12 in Rogue of the Railway, our main feature. As well, this one act format provides a full stage opportunity to the Grade 7 to 9 students in the One Act LEAP, the Grade 10 Theatre Arts students and the presentation of the Grade 12 IBDP Theatre Arts independent project performance. As the opening acts of the festival, these students get to perform at a major evening event. We relish this opportunity for student involvement and the chance to showcase their artistic talents. CRUSH It’s about love. it’s about being a teenager.
Crush began as an idea on the first day of our One Act LEAP elective. It took many forms throughout the creative process, but what we ended up with is a Cabaret-style montage of moments and emotions. The girls picked their own monologues and songs and did most of their own rehearsing and scriptwriting. The main goal was for the show to run through a full spectrum of teenaged love: from crush to heartbreak to crush again. Each actor took a risk by being showcased as an individual, and this is something to be commended. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed creating it! Director Natassja By
