A NOTE FROM THE
DIRECTORS The impetus for our show was completely student driven. After posing various show possibilities, the students overwhelmingly selected Peter Pan. They wanted to embrace and engage the entire Mulgrave community with a fresh and vibrant adaptation of the iconic J.M. Barrie story of a boy who refuses to grow up, choosing instead to seek out creativity and adventure in the magical world of Neverland. It was important to us that this tale be a blend of traditional, infused with whimsical, and sprinkled with danger and intrigue. It was also important to us that we fly! We wanted to explore the idea that the visions and delights of unfettered childhood are always there for the taking, giving our often ordinary lives a taste of the extraordinary whenever we choose. I am most humbly appreciative of this entire cast and crew, and our host of volunteers that with their combined talent and complete dedication have created our fantastical vision. And so, we wish you a magical evening of adventure as you meet us second star to the right and straight on till morning. “All the world is made of faith, and trust, and pixie dust.” J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan
Lydia Race DIRECTOR
As someone with a passion for theatre, I decided to take on the role of assistant director after learning that the production would be Peter Pan. As this is my last year attending Mulgrave, I wanted to help build a show that would be remembered well after I am gone. I didn’t anticipate the scale of the logistics that would be involved in such a production, and during the process of directing, I have learned how to organise a production of this scale. I hope that the audience feels a sense of nostalgia for their childhood and the kindness that surround these youthful memories. I am so appreciative and thankful for all of the hard work and dedication from our cast and crew. I have especially enjoyed working with, and learning from, Ms. Race. “Faint hearts never won a fair lady.” J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan
Phillip Martin
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
Peter Pan, or the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up, or Peter and Wendy, is J. M. Barrie’s most famous work. Originally it was presented in the form of a 1904 play and later a 1911 novel. Both versions tell the story of Peter Pan, a mischievous little boy who can fly, and his adventures on the island of Neverland with Wendy Darling and her brothers, the fairy, Tinker Bell, the Lost Boys, and the pirate, Captain Hook. The play and novel were inspired by Barrie’s friendship with the Llewelyn Davies family. Barrie continued to revise the play for years after its debut until publication of the play script in 1928.
The year is 1910. Wendy Darling lives with her mother, father and brothers, John and Michael, in a lovely little house in Bloomsbury in London. Wendy, a delightful girl, has an active imagination and loves to tell stories. Peter, a boy who magically never ages, makes night-time calls on the the Darlings’ house in order to hear her fanciful tales listening in on her by the open window. One evening the Darling family home is thrown into disarray when visiting Aunt Millicent announces that it is time for Wendy to leave the nursery and grow up. Now on this very night, Peter has been skulking around looking for his shadow that he misplaced when he last visited the nursery. Wendy awakens to find Peter rifling through the nursery. Peter is thrilled to meet the author and upon discovering that this will be her last night in the nursery, he invites her to fly with him to Neverland, a place with real-life grand adventures where no one ever grows up. Enchanted, Wendy and her brothers agree and their magical flight to Neverland is followed by many adventures. The children are blown out of the air by a cannon and Wendy is nearly killed by the Lost Boy, Tootles, but most menacing of all is Peter’s arch nemesis Captain Hook who is on the hunt for revenge. Upon discovering Wendy and her brothers, he kidnaps the Darlings in order to lure Peter Pan for a final showdown. Peter, with assistance from his Lost Boys, the Amazonian Lotus Warriors, the Mermaids and Prince Seabrus, the Oracles and Tinker Bell must face Hook in order to rescue the Darlings in one decisive battle. Wendy enjoys her adventures but eventually chooses to return home with the knowledge that adventure is always available to her whenever she chooses.
