EXECUTIVE & COORDINATOR’S REPORTS

We thank you for this opportunity to produce the Faireld Summer Concert Series and value our ongoing partnership with the Arts and Culture Unit at the City of Yarra. With our extensive links to culturally and linguistically diverse artists and communities we believe Multicultural Arts Victoria has brought a fresh and exciting program to the City of Yarra in the rst year of the series. Our events management team has delivered safe, accessible and well organised productions with positive outcomes for artists, vendors, Council and communities. We believe we have artistically framed the series to uniquely and creatively celebrate and promote the diversity of Yarra’s community and encourage greater cultural awareness, appreciation and participation in cultural activity in the city. We look forward to working with the City of Yarra to deliver equally vibrant and successful concerts in the coming years. Jill Morgan Chief Executive Ofcer

As a Faireld resident myself, I was very excited when presented with the opportunity to program and coordinate the Faireld Summer Concert Series for 2012. Our artists relished the opportuntiy to present their art in such a beautiful, natural setting. Connecting their cultural heritage with their art and the land is a unique and grounding experience for those presenting the work as well as those enjoying the show. Audience survey results indicate that our fresh approach to programming a diverse, multicultural series resonated with and inspired local audiences. As is the case for many outdoor event organisers in Melbourne, our greatest challenge this year was the weather. Cancellation of the rst concert due to heavy rain, followed by either the threat of rain or intense heat in subsequent weeks most certainly had an impact on audience attendance. However, all three concerts that ran had healthy and enthusiastic audiences to enjoy the cultural program in the beautiful natural surrounds of the amphitheatre. Our event staff, volunteers and contractors have all reported positive experiences and are looking forward to future series. We are condent that we have made a great start in 2012 and are brimming with fresh ideas for the coming years. Andrea Makris Event Coordinator

“Good to see multicultualism, should see more!” “More frequent please - January and March too!”

PROGRAM

City of Yarra’s Aims & Objectives

AIMS (a) To develop, promote and deliver a high quliaty series if outdoor, family orientated summer concerts at the Faireld Amphitheatre. It is intended that he Program build on the strengths of the free concerts conducted at teh venue over the past 15 years. (b) To develop a program of music performacnes appropriate for the venue and the audience, with wide appeal across a braod range of community tastes. Concert performances may also include a range of art forms includnig dance, spoken word, etc (c) The Program should comprise concerts performed by a range of culturall diverse performers, including Aboriginal artists.

OBJECTIVES The Program should: (a) demonstrate a commitment to Wurundjeri Reconciliation and Aboriginal Social Justice; (b) promote an inclusive, tolerant, supportive adn involved community (c) celebrate and support the contribution of culturally diverse communities who make this city their home (d) develop a program which showcases and supports local acts and cultural practrice within Yarra (e) develop a program that encourages audience participation (f) demonstrate a commitment to attracting new local audiences and increasing community access and participation.

MAV’S PROGRAMMING CONCEPT: Neighbours! This year’s program turned a new leaf with a series that presented strong themes based around the concept of ‘neighbours’. Getting to know one’s neighbour was promoted as a means to create more harmonious, integrated and safer communities. Cultural sharing and understanding between people from neighbouring countries was the secondary level of the theme, with artists from around the world grouped together in broad geogrpahic regions in the programs. In some instances, this meant programming artists from cultures which are historical (and possibly current) rivals. Coming together in this new land, on the tranquil banks of the Yarra, presented a strong gesture of reconciliation. The programming has been guided by research into the main languages spoken in the City of Yarra and bordering municipality. Refer to table in the Appendix

FAIRFIELD SUMMER CONCERT SERIES 2012 ACQUITTAL PRESENTED BY MULTICULTURAL ARTS VICTORIA

EDITORIAL - MELBOURNE TIMES WEEKLY

Kutcha Edwards: Medium for music

BY ANGELA ALLAN 31 Jan, 2012 04:00 AM IN 2009, when rehearsing with the Black Arm Band ahead of a performance at the State Theatre, indigenous performer Kutcha Edwards had a spiritual experience. “It was as if I was getting a feeling that I could sense my ancestors walking from Lake Mungo in Swan Hill down to the Arts Centre, critiquing me on my interpretation of Mutthi Mutthi language. It was a freaky time. “Sometimes I have an understanding that some of the thoughts I have are not mine, I believe that I am a medium for these thoughts [of my ancestors]. Music allows me to do that. I’m very thankful for that.” Edwards’ music is a reection of his own songline – of his personal experience as part of the stolen generation, his family, his culture and his people – and his performance this month is part of the Faireld Summer Concert Series. “If I wrote a song yesterday, it doesn’t make it a day old. I am from the oldest living culture, so my songs, in reality, are not only of me, they’re of my ancestry. They are more than 100,000 years old.” As well as being a speaker on Aboriginal issues and working with Multicultural Arts Victoria, the singer-songwriter is working on a new blues-inuenced album, which has the working title of Black & Blu. “Why I write is to de-brief over what not only happened to me, but to my family, my people, and therefore, everyone else – the mainstream. There are ups and downs within the industry, but I enjoy what I do. If someone else benets from what you do, that’s great too.” The Faireld Summer Concert Series begins on February 5 at Faireld Amphitheatre, Faireld Park, Heidelberg Road, Faireld. Kutcha Edwards and his band perform on February 19 as part of the free event Our Island Sounds. For more information, visit multiculturalarts.com.au

FAIRFIELD SUMMER CONCERT SERIES 2012 ACQUITTAL PRESENTED BY MULTICULTURAL ARTS VICTORIA

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

CONCLUSIONS DRAWN FROM THE EVALUATION SURVEY The audience is predominantly female and of the age 35 - 44 years, however the age ranges from 25 - 65 years and (based on observation) there are a large number of children in attendance The audience members mostly identify as Australian yet come from a great diversity of cultural backgrounds. Half in attendance said that they attend cultural events about 3 times a year. The main attraction for audiences is the theme of the event as well as the proximity to their homes. Most attendees lived within 5 km of the venue and a quarter lived within 1km. Despite this, over half drove to the event. Most attended with friends but a signicant number also attended with family members. Audiences members heard about the event in various ways including Yarra and MAV marketing, however, word of mouth and previous knowledge of the event (from past experience) were the two most signicant factors. Most people preferred to bring their own picnics, however, on the date of the survey, the kiosk was not open so it is difcult to ascertain whether they would have purchased something. 80-95% of people stated that they were either ‘satised’ or ‘very satised’ with the performances, suitability to children, organisation, venue and accessibility. More than 85% found it to be satisfying, enriching, innovative and would recommend the program to others.

MAV’S RECOMMENDATIONS To include include RRR / PBS FM radio campaign in the marketing mix and reduce the letterbox drop quantity to 5000 instead of 10000. To make the letterbox brochure simpler (one DL strip) and with magnetic strip for fridge placement. To work towards real estate board again and also look into signage banner at the carpark entrance for a month. To continue programming with clear ‘themes’ for each event, with a mix of kid friendly as well as more mature works. To consider a pop-up marquee for instruments in the event of sudden rain. Also, a pop-up marquee for the MAV info table, to protect from the elements and make more obvious. To set a temperature threshold for hot weather. Performing under the direct sun is an OH&S issue for artitsts. Also, consider a reduced program duration beginning half an hour later when the amphitheatre is in shade. To select vendors that offer lighter meals and desserts, snacks and a range of hot and cold drinks including coffee. If the vendor has a cultural connection to the program, have them do a mini interview with the MC to describe their foods and how they’re made. Recommend supply of ice-cream on hot days. Consider if the budget allows for 2-way communication units. To conduct a dedicated postering and yer drop in the surrounding suburbs prior to Christmas. To allocate more marketing collateral to targetting family audience through Council’s community centres and if timely, as an insert in Council’s rates notices. Also aim for inclusion in Council’s regular advertisement in Yarra Leader. 28

FEEDBACK FROM ARTISTS

Thank you so much for having us at yesterday’s event. We had a great time and received lots of positive feedback from the audience as well. The other performers were amazing and the whole event was organised really well. Good job! Looking forward to doing more work with MAV. Regards, Hithanjanee, Bindaas Indian Dance As a performer and a representative of Polixeni, I found MAV to be an absolute pleasure to deal with, the booking process and the lead up to the actual performance was seamless and a pleasure. Ive always found the staff and representatives of MAV to be very accommodating with our requests leading up to the actual performance. It’s always fun, stress free and exciting, I commend all the staff at MAV. All the best, Con Kalamaras, Polixeni On behalf BARAN’s member musicians I would like to extend my deepest gratitude and thanks to and Multicultural Art Victoria for inviting us to perform at the Faireld Amphitheatre, on Sunday 26th of February 2012. What a wonderful location to perform, listen music and dance. Some time we would like to sing spontaneously but the environment you our in is not right to do so. Faireld Amphitheater is one of the unique place in Melbourne that magnies you to sing and listen. The natural surrounding of the Amphitheater, both water and trees creates great atmosphere where it brings a authentic smiles to the face of the audiences which I witnessed during my performance. The event on Sunday unable me to interact with both my friend from Kurdish community and BARAN’s member to meet, motivate and enjoyed wonderful time with other members of mainstream community at Faireld Amphitheater. What a wonderful professionally organized and executed Summer Festival. Once again thank you MAV and City of Yarra for such an great opportunities unable us to be part of it and share our music. Yours Sincerely, Fadil Suna, BARAN Thank you very much for the invitation and opportunity to present our culture to the wider community of Yarra. I would like to extend my appretiation to Andrea Makris for organising such a wonderful and professionally executed event. From the moment of our arrival at the venue, we were welcomed, escorted and breifed. It was enjoyable watching other cultures perform, and seeing how many customs and traditions we share right throughout the mediterranean/balkan/middle east. All credit must go to the MAV for sourcing and encouraging community groups such as ours to participate in events where we are able to present ourselves proudly as Australian born Greeks. Deon Manasis, Manasis Dance We had a wonderful time at Faireld Amphitheatre surrounded by lots of greens, trees and lovely kids dancers. Since our music instruments, Bamboo utes and taiko drums, have been strong connection with nature and humanbeings and often been used for summer festival in Japan, we felt like we wereperforming in Japan! Thank you very much for giving us such a wonderful oppotunity. Ayaki Sato, Fuefukuro

FEEDBACK FROM VOLUNTEERS

Glad to hear everything went well last sunday! I am so sorry I gave you such late notice. About my personal experience at the amphitheatre, I found those events really well organised and managed. Shame to not be able to rely on the weather though. I only found that the performing space could have been slightly more dened to keep the kids from running across and around. From working with a lot with musicians, I know that they always enjoy having a safe stage without worrying about their gear or people getting too close. I understand it was the “river” volunteer’s job to keep people off the artistic space and watch children going downhill but I found it a bit delicate when it got crowded. So apart from parents thinking they own the whole space, the concerts were really fun. A great entertainment, really pleasant location, lovely people. Perfect sunday afternoon outing-picnic. I hope everything goes well for you, I really enjoyed meeting you. I will be off to France in about 3 weeks, back to working in my industry (arts and culture management) so if you need any contact overseas, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Wish you all the best! Cheers, Lea Oriel, volunteer Volunteering at the Faireld Summer Concerts was a great way to spend my Sunday afternoon! I got to experience colourful performances in beautiful surrounds and best of all, be among the community who really enjoyed the event. Kathryn Sullivan, volunteer I really enjoyed being involved in such a well-run and enjoyable event - the amphitheatre at Faireld Park is a fantastic venue, and was the perfect setting for this series of concerts. Jessica Bernard, volunteer Kommune photography students have been honoured to be partnered with Multicultural Arts Victoria and given the opportunity to photograph an exciting array of live local world music and talented performers. This has been a great challenge for us and we are very grateful for the opportunity. The Faireld Summer Concert Series is a fantastic way to promote cultural diversity in the arts and a great way to showcase the talented performers to the community. It has also enabled Kommune students the possibility of working as a photographer in the arts industry as well enhancing their performing arts photography skills and portfolios. On behalf of Kommune students I thank you for the opportunity to be of service to you. We are always interested in suggestions that would allow us to improve upon our already high standards and encourage you to submit your thoughts. Again, thank you. Yvette Fitzpatrick, On behalf of Kommune Photogrpahy School
