EXECUTIVE & COORDINATOR’S REPORTS
Multicultural Arts Victoria has ince again brought a fresh and exciting program to the City of Yarra for the Farirfield Summer Concert Series in 2013. Our programming approach refelcts our extensive links to culturally and linguistically diverse artists and communities and we value this opportunity to uncover some extraordinary talent. I believe that the opportunity to share their artistic expression, including new collaborations and cultural traditions, is invaluable not just to the artists, but also to the City of Yarra and its diverse communities. We have artistically framed the series to uniquely and creatively celebrate and promote the diversity of Yarra’s community and encourage greater cultural awareness, appreciation and participation in cultural activity in the city. We thank you for this opportunity to produce the Fairfield Summer Concert Series and value our ongoing partnership with the Arts and Culture Unit at the City of Yarra. It was a delight to be able to personally relax back with the Mayor at the first and last concerts nad I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank her for her support. This year’s Fairfield Summer Concert Series reached an unprecedented level of popularity that reflects the high quality of the program and the increased focus of our communications strategy (as well as a lot of luck with the weather!) It was an absolute pleasure to witness the streams of audiences converge on the banks of the Yarra to enjoy the work of local multicultural artists. Our research shows that there was an even balance of local residents and visitors to the City of Yarra which is a great result. The cultural background of audiences also reflected the theme of the respective weekly program, which indicates that we have effectively tapped into key ethnic community networks. It is wonderful to be able to offer emerging artists the opportunity to perform at this idyllic venue and feedback indicates that they find the experience of connecting with the land, the community and their fellow artists inspiring. The opportunity offers a platform for new collaborations (eg Indigenous didgeridoo player Mitch Firth with South African singer/songwriter Valanga Kohza), for celebration of heritage (eg Dalouna dabke dance group) and for contemporary expressions of folklore (Tunyos y Cantaros Colombian dance troupe). We are proud to have presented such a successful program in the City of Yarra this year and look forward to delivering another diverse and vibrant program in 2014. MULTICULTURAL ARTS VICTORIA
Our organisation and production team
Multicultural Arts Victoria (MAV) is the peak state arts organisation that supports artists and communities from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. MAV is a not for profit organisation that works regionally as well as in metropolitan Melbourne and aims to promote the value and benefits of cultural diversity in the arts across Victoria. MAV’s objective is to develop, assist and initiate programs that highlight the excellence of culturally diverse artists, groups and communities in a professional setting as well as new and emerging communities including refugee and indigenous communities.

To conduct safe and professional events that augment the natural beauty of Fairfield Park.
2. To celebrate and promote the diversity of Yarra’s community and encourage greater awareness, appreciation and participation in cultural activity. 3. To increase resident access and participation in arts and cultural activity for all ages but also welcome and entertain visitors from beyond the City of Yarra, including tourists. 4. To develop a sense of cultural pride and create on-going economic opportunities and to maximise employment opportunities for NESB and Indigenous artists.

CITY OF YARRA
Aims & Objectives
The City of Yarra is an inner metropolitan municipality which is home to a diverse community of about 79,500 people. About 29% of Yarra’s population was born overseas and many more speak languages other than English at home. Yarra City Council encourages all residents to get involved in community life by joining in the many activities, programs at events that take place around Yarra. Fairfield Park is the perfect destination for relaxing on the banks of the Yarra River. The park is a popular tourist attraction, with the Fairfield Boathouse and Amphitheatre located in its grounds.
PROJECT AIMS (a) To develop, promote and deliver a high quality series of outdoor, family orientated summer concerts at the Fairfield Amphitheatre. It is intended that he Program build on the strengths of the free concerts conducted at the venue over the past 15 years. (b) To develop a program of music performances appropriate for the venue and the audience, with wide appeal across a braod range of community tastes. Concert performances may also include a range of art forms including dance, spoken word, etc (c) The Program should comprise concerts performed by a range of culturally diverse performers, including Aboriginal artists.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES The Program should: (a) demonstrate a commitment to Wurundjeri Reconciliation and Aboriginal Social Justice; (b) promote an inclusive, tolerant, supportive adn involved community (c) celebrate and support the contribution of culturally diverse communities who make this city their home (d) develop a program which showcases and supports local acts and cultural practrice within Yarra (e) develop a program that encourages audience participation (f) demonstrate a commitment to attracting new local audiences and increasing community access and participation.

Sizzling summer songs and steps from Latin America

Sin Frontera Band Alejandro Espino Aldana, (musician, teacher, composer) was born in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. He is a versatile musician-multi-instrumentalist, improviser and adept at playing diverse musical genres such as: Latin American Folk, Salsa, Flamenco, Jazz, Classical, Pop and Reggae. Alejandro moved to Australia with his family in 2007 and now leads this wonderful music trio., spreading his love of Mexican music and Latin American storytelling.

Tunyos y Cantaros Springing from the vibrant Colombian community of Victoria, the Tunjos Y Cantaros dance group is one of the most polished Latin American folkloric dance acts in Victoria. The group is led by Director Kathleen Gonzalez and has won awards for their Hispanic dance performances. They have performed at various Colombian and wider-community festivals across Melbourne and present a fresh and contemporary take on ancient folkloric dances and legends that fuse indigenous and African elements with strong narrative and lots of energy and zest.

Madre Monte Hard hitting horns funkin’ up 50’s style Cumbia, a tight rhythm section dissecting Afro-Colombian progressions, skankin’ guitars infusing reggae grooves, and a front man recreating the ancient mythological stories of Colombia all intertwine to create what is now Melbourne’s unique 9-piece Latin Reggae outfit Madre Monte. Formed in 2008, Madre Monte’s sound is representative of Colombia’s unique culture, a marbled ancestry of African, Indigenous and European descent, a product of a long and dark history of colonization, slave trade and migration. Through their music Madre Monte give a history lesson in travelling sounds, rhythms, instruments and the power of music to stay true to its roots yet adapt accordingly to new environments.

Jorge Leiva Jorge Leiva is an educator and artist with international teaching, training and arts experience. Leiva has worked in schools, colleges, TAFE Institutes and Universities in diverse areas such as music, art, design, ESL and Spanish. Leiva has also been immersed in researching and working on cross-cultural education and expression initiatives especially between Australia and Latin American and has initiated international educational and creative projects and partnerships between these regions.

Songs of love, loss and spies from the Spanish-Franco region

Karavana Flamenca Karavana Flamenca plays gutsy and authentic Spanish gypsy street music, with fire! Fusing the roots of rumba from Africa and Cuba to Catalonia with a contemporary sound. Miguel Ovejero sings in his native Spanish/ Romany languages and plays flamenco guitar. Guitars, bass and percussion drive the rhythm; vocals, oud and violin sing the haunting tunes. The heart-wrenching passion, breath-taking energy, rhythm and soulful melodies of Karavana Flamenca spells Gypsy Fiesta every performance.

Madame Andree Etoile Marley plays Madame Andrée, the dangerous, disobedient and sexy French WW2 Resistance fighter known by the Germans as ‘the white mouse’. In neo-noir style, Madame plunges the audience into the war, subjecting them to a claustrophobic world, at risk of betrayal, capture and annihilation. Bitter sweet melodies give way to parodies and anthems with double meanings as Madame Andrée weaves satire and cabaret from her wartime experiences with the help of her WW2 field radio, gramophone and fellow resistance fighter musicians.

Tek Tek Ensemble Tek Tek Ensemble is a revitalised anthropological dance band consisting of guitars, trumpet, trombone, violins, percussion, double bass, piano accordion, and the human voice. Tek Tek Ensemble creates hybridizations of most of the world’s music incorporating a startling variety of ethnographic and popular genres. The encyclopaedic repertoire of the ensemble is bound by the strict yet simple stipulation of danceability. As long as it has a fever of unbridled festivity, Tek Tek Ensemble plays it.

Will Tait As captain of Melbourne band 8Foot Felix and chief audience wrangler of educational theatre company Our Planet Enterprises, Will Tait spends many hours of his waking life bringing crowds together in joy, dance, carousing and even, at times, deep respectful listening. When people gather there is always an opportunity to open up a celebration of our connectedness. As MC Will seeks this opening playfully and invites the audience to experience the important role that they play in the unfolding of the performance that they have come to imbibe.

Sweet melodies, enchanting dance and rhythmic beats from the Middle East 5:00pm

Alwan Middle-Eastern trio which plays sublime Turkish, Arabic and Israeli music. Yuval Ashkar trained with oud master Yair Dalal and has performed with sublime Ladino singer Yasmin Levi. Phil Carroll has recently returned from living in Turkey where he studied ney and worked as a musician in weddings, cafes and sufi ceremonies. Matt Stonehouse has worked extensively throughout Australia and the Middle East to great acclaim. Dalouna The group started last year in October with only few members and since then, it has grown in number. We have two groups one for over 12 and another mixed for 16 years and under. The group has performed in many occasions. The group performs Dabkah dance from the Middle Eastern traditions. The group members come from various backgrounds, Lebanese, Palestinians, Iraqi, Tunisians, Syrians, Albanians, Pakistanis, Egypt, South Africans, and Australians.

Virginia and El Negoum Virginia is Melbourne’s foremost Middle Eastern dance performer. Born to an Egyptian father and Greek mother, Virginia has grown up in the dance and studied / toured / performed extensively across the Middle East and India. She is considered a local authority on Egyptian music and dance and is the performer of choice at Egyptian community events. She will perform backed by an authentic live band, El Njoum, with percussion, oud and vocals.

Yvonne Boulos Yvonne is a talented Egyptian/Australian comedienne, performing stand-up at various comedy venues around Melbourne. She is best known for playing the outrageous Lay-lah Wazir, the loud mouthed, bogan belly dancer from Melbourne’s northern suburbs. Audiences enjoy her warm stage presence, quirky take on current affairs and her ability draw poignant and hilariously funny parallels between Australian and Middle Eastern culture.
Audience estimate: 450-550 Emergency Incident: A tiger snake was sited in the dressing rooms by a woman changing her baby’s nappy. This was reported at the MAV desk. A man (audience member) that overheard this report accompanied Andrea Makris (Event Coordinator) to the toilet block to investigate. Andrea did not see anything, returned to the Info Desk to call the City of Yarra after hours line. In the meantime, the man managed to find and trap the snake in a plastic tub. He secured it with a rope and brought it to the Info Desk for safe keeping until the concert had concluded, at which point he took it and released it far from the amphitheatre.

Valanga Khoza Valanga Khoza is a singer, musician and storyteller. His charismatic stage presence and warm personality invite both children and adults into his world as they join him on a personal journey reliving childhood memories told through the stories of his grandmother, tasting the traditional meals in an African village or feeling the harsh reality of apartheid South Africa. Special guest: Mitch Firth, known as “Didge” to his mates is an expert didgeridoo player and dancer. He has performed at Sydney’s World Youth Day, shared the Sydney Opera House stage with country star John Williamson and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and represented Indigenous Australian culture at the canonisation of Mary MacKillop in Rome.

Asanti Dance Asanti Dance Theatre has mastered the diverse cultures of West Africa and represents the beauty of Ghana with his telling dance style. They perform with highly captivating and unforgettable power, precision and energy. Being highly skilled in dance and drumming allows them to expertly teach the understanding of the how the drumming and dance ‘talk’ with each other, a concept and understanding that is so important in African performance arts. They will have the audience spellbound by their acrobatics and agility.

Afrovival A powerful blend of melodic dance grooves from fice countries of Africa. Presenting award winning King Bell from DRC who toured internationally with the National Ballet of Angola, reggae legend Randy Borquaye from Ghana of ‘Randy and the Jah Roots’ playing Kora, award winning choreographer and kalimba player Suzanne Nfandizo from Australia who trained at Tanzanian College of Arts, music producer Mpaphi Nfandizo from Botswana who plays Kalanga folklore from the Afri’can’a 4 string guitar made out of an oil can, and a few surprises.

Lil’Fablice By the time he arrived in Australia, Fablice had experienced more than any fifteen year old should. Originally from Burundi located in East Africa, Fablice been performing Hip Hop and R’N’B music since 2006. Still in his teens and loving the Urban vibe he has also kept true to his roots, performing his traditional music by playing percussion with his extended family at festivals and events around Victoria including large venues, such as the Arts Centre and Crown Palladium.

CATERING BY BEBASS
Following last year’s erratic weather and consequent unpredictable attendance, MAV decided to engage the same catering company for all four of the concerts in the 2013 series. Based on previous year’s experience, it is clear that the kiosk does not make a substantial turnover due to the limited capacity of the venue, the propensity for audience members to bring their own picnic, and the short duratoin of the event. We therefor felt it would be more efficient and financially attractive for the one vendor to cater for all four weeks, with adjustments to the menu to suit the respective themes. This system worked well, with the caterer reporting an overall small profit and a positive experience. The menu each week was as follows: Week 1: Canciones de Verano Beef burrito, vegetarian nachos, portugese tart and horchata (chilled rice drink), tea & coffee. Week 2: Basque in the Sun Paella with chorizo, chicken and prawn, vegetarian emanadas, rosquillas doughnuts, virgin sangria, tea & coffee. Week 3: Saharan Sounds Lamb kofta with tabouli, fried cauliflower with coriander yoghurt, baklava, mint lemonade, tea & coffee. Week 4: I Love Africa Upside down maqluba, spinach and feta birouat, potato pone - sweet potato and ginger snack, tamarind cordial, tea & coffee.

Madre Monte really enjoyed playing at the Summer Concerts. The venue was great, as well as the organization. It was great to have some nice weather as well and a nice crowd, made it a great day. The only negative part was the sound. We didn't have fold back for the first half of the set and the sound guys did not pay attention to this. It was hard to play without fold back in an open space like that with a big band like ours. Besides this it was a great gig. Cheers, Henry.

We were very satisfied with the organisation in the lead up to the event. The event information, contract etc were sent out with plenty of notice. The event itself was great,well attended and an amazing venue, everyone in the band was well looked after.The sound engineers worked hard to produce the best sound possible.The MC , stage manager all did a great job.One suggestion: shade could be provided for the musicians when they perform if appropriate Finally...so happy that that Summer series is still going....good music in a stunning setting with families and friends. Too much MC talking by African MC both prior to music and during set-ups. Good on you for doing this! Keep it going Seems to have got very busy. Good for you, bad for us. Maybe program needs to be expanded, or a larger venue. Good, enjoyed them. Would like to see more similar events. Ampitheatre is a little restrictive for a large crowd. Perhaps advertise ib 3AW (Denis Walter) Advertise more widely eg Seniors groups through magazines etc A bar

Key findings from survey •
Most patrons are aged between 35 and 54 however, MAV staff observed that a significant number of these people brought children to the event (which the survey does not capture).
•
At least half of the patrons are from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds or were born overseas.
•
About half of the patrons were aware of who had organised /supported the event and about two thirds had been to MAV events before. About a third heard about the event through word-of-mouth, while almost half heard about it via MAV’s marketing activities (RRR, sign, website, letterbox drops, enews).
•
More than half of the patrons brought their own food. Of those that purchased from the kiosk the majority seemed to be satisfied or very satisfied.
•
Generally, attendees were more than satisfied with the performances, suitability to children, accessbility, organisation and venue. People found it to be an enriching experience that they would recommend to friends in future.
•
The main attractions were the music, opportunity to dance and the community vibe. A small number of comments were made about the increased attendance at the event and suggestions made for expanding the program to address the popularity.
