MELBOURNE Mapping Melbourne will explore new perspectives, new possibility and new expression: a free multi-artform festival for independent artists providing a platform for new Australian/Asian inter-cultural work in the heart of Melbourne. Mapping Melbourne creates an experimental space for diverse independent artists where contemporary culture and artistic practice comes into focus, collides and is shared across cultural divides. Backdrops will range iconic Melbourne sites to contemporary spaces where the artists will share performances and collaborate to create unique independent and cross artform work. There will be development of dialogue both in aesthetic and philosophical frameworks, a creative response to place and space, and also a deep development of an artistic dialogue

that explores difference in cultural and artistic histories and identities. Mapping Melbourne is proud to be a platform for strengthening new and established arts networks between contemporary independent artists across the Asian region, building connections and facilitating collaborative ongoing relationships for both the Australian and the International artists. Multicultural Arts Victoria thanks all the artists, our sponsors and supporters who have made Mapping Melbourne possible.

DESIVOLUTION 2-15 DECEMBER MAGNET GALLERIES MELBOURNE LEVEL 2, 640 BOURKE STREET GALLERY HOURS: TUE TO FRI: 11AM-6PM, SAT & SUN: 11AM-4PM FREE A photographic exhibition mapping the evolution of the humble Indian restaurant archetype and the stories behind them. The local Indian food scene is on the cusp of a new wave. It may be claimed that the way to a Melbournian’s heart is through their stomach. Food is also a unique window into a culture. Our taste buds can give us momentarily, an insight, into another way of life thousands of miles away from our own. From the (now ubiquitous) local curry house to fine dining, the Indian diaspora is starting to spread its wings and fashion its own identity through food. This is a blend that is uniquely

Melbourne - from Indian ‘street-food’ trucks to specialist market stall-holders and contemporary fusion eateries tucked away in CBD laneways. We’re moving beyond paper tablecloths and the same 6 curries on the menu. By moving outside the boundaries of what is traditional, culture can evolve. COMMON GROUND SAT 10 DECEMBER, 6PM-8.30PM THE CHANNEL, ARTS CENTRE MELBOURNE FREE Budding writers will perform new poetry and spoken word exploring the capacity to represent diverse cultures, faiths and identities through creativity. Common Ground was established in 2013 to create a space for young people from two faiths that are often religiously and racially vilified (Sikhism and Islam), to come together and use spoken word and poetry as a medium for dialogue, friendship and interaction. It has now grown into a unique, multilingual project that utilises poetry, spoken word, sound and film to build connections and understanding between people of all diverse faiths and cultures.

Over a series of workshops, facilitators Abdul Hammoud, Ebony Moncrief and Sukhjit Khalsa collaborate with participants to create new poetry and spoken word pieces exploring identity and role of faith in our everyday lives. These pieces are then performed at a free performance, exploring the human voice in its many forms. Feature performances will include new collaboration from the Remastered Myths program with Mindy Meng Wang, Joel Ma and Francesca Mountford

SpontaneiTEA Pop Up Tea Room series MON 5 DECEMBER & 12 DECEMBER, 4PM-8PM HORSE BAZAAR, 397 LITTLE LONSDALE FREE The PopUp Tearoom Series is a durational performance and site-specific installation. Audiences are invited to sit and have a bowl of green tea and the pop-up performances will be happening in spirit of spontaneiTEA of the moment. Traditionally, tea-ceremony rooms had a small door which visitors bowed to enter, temporarily removing the hierarchies of the world outside. In times of war, Medieval Samurai had to leave their swords outside as the tearoom provided relief from the emotional stress and social disorder of the battlefield. Curious about what sort of ‘Tea’
we can make today, Umiumare invokes the Japanese

notion of ‘ma’ or ‘active pause’ to explore deep presence in spaces that can be simultaneously reflective and provocative. One of the central moral values of tea is: 一期一会 (ichi-go ichi-e) and it means, “Treasure every encounter, for it will never recur” “Live every day as though it were last.” This project has been a part of the fellowship program, assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body.

CROSSING: BEYOND BALISERRING 7-16 DECEMBER TUE 6 DECEMBER (LAUNCH) 5PM-7PM FORTYFIVEDOWNSTAIRS. 45 FLINDERS LN FREE A collection of works from emerging Indonesian artists exemplifying the dynamism of contemporary art beyond Baliseering, or in present-day expression, beyond the “traditional art” Bali is famously promoted and known for internationally. The policy of ‘Baliseering’ was first introduced in the 1920s by the Dutch colonial government to train locals to continue the traditional arts of dance, theatre, painting, sculpture and literature. Visually, this meant that art portrayed scenes of the Balinese engaging in cultural activities and in ‘authentic’ settings that fastened to Balinese art identity through media and tourism. This exhibition will feature works of art from 11 contemporary Indonesian artists beyond the boundaries of baliseering, tackling themes of personal life Right: Citra Sasmita, Ab Initio, Ab Aeterno, 2016 (detail)

experiences, environmental, social and political issues that arise within the Indonesian context and resonate on the global stage. Crossing: Beyond Baliseering will highlight the artistic and thoughtprovoking talents of Indonesian artists and create a platform for understanding contemporary Balinese and Indonesian culture creating a cultural bridge between Indonesia and Australia.
