Welcome to Mapping Melbourne 2018 Now in its sixth year, Mapping Melbourne showcases and makes connections between contemporary independent artists here in Victoria and from across Australasia. This year’s festival explores our place in the region, highlights contemporary Asian art and culture, and celebrates the contributions that diverse Asian communities make to our city and cultural life.
Featuring over 120 artists across 20 events, the program offers new perspectives and will help build collaborative and ongoing relationships between local and international artists. This year, we have worked in partnership with hundreds of artists and creatives to deliver an extraordinary program of contemporary work by some of our region’s most exciting talent. Not only are we focused on strengthening connections across the seas, but also exploring much needed platforms that appopriately recognise the significance and contributions of these cultural innovators.

Street Connection is a live exhibition and work shop featuring the work of Mue Bon, a Thai street artist who uses spray paint to create a cast of signature characters in public spaces. Bon excels at character work, with his most notable creation Pukruk The Love Bird, taking centre stage in Hosier Lane. Mue Bon is a Thai artist at the forefront of the Asian street art scene with his unmistakable characters appearing on local road sides and shutters, to gallery walls and Art fairs worldwide. Earth Mother, three times and more… Using Vedic hymns, singing, silence, drumming, contemporary mythology and a distinctive movement vocabulary, MA3KA is the performative expression of the Holy trinity of Hindu goddesses: Saraswati, Knowledge Mother; Lakshmi, Prosperity Mother; and Meenakshi, Warrior Mother refracted through the prism of personal narratives. University), Dr. Priya Srinivasan (Performing Artist | Associate Professor, Deakin University) and Dr. Nithya Nagarajan (Performing Artist | Manager – Community and Participation, NIDA). Dr Anita Ratnam, based in Chennai (Madras), India, is highly respected as a performer, writer, speaker, arts entrepreneur and culture mentor. She has been described as an ‘intersectionist’, whose work weaves the many disciplines of dance, theatre, spoken word, ritual, archaeology, dramaturgy and women’s issues. For over 40 years, her distinguished career has witnessed over 1000 performances in 27 countries. In 2018, she was awarded the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for contemporary dance by the President of India. This is Dr. Ratnam’s first tour of Melbourne, Australia.
SOUNDING THE CITY IN BRONZE SUNDAY 2 DECEMBER, 2PM-3PM @ FEDERATION BELLS, BIRRARUNG MARR, MELBOURNE
Sounding the City in Bronze brings together the Federation Bells, a popular and visually-striking Indonesian-inspired sound sculpture in central Melbourne, with Javanese gamelan in a dynamic mobile composition for both sets of instruments by Mitchell Mollison. Javanese gamelan, a large ensemble of mostly bronze percussion instruments from Indonesia, was one source of inspiration for the creators of the Federation Bells, the set of 39 bronze bells on high poles installed at Birrarung Marr. This is the first time that the two sets of instruments have sounded together. Performed on site at Birrarung Marr, Sounding the City in Bronze showcases the sounds and
instruments of Javanese gamelan – played by Melbourne Community Gamelan – in a new and exciting way. It also engages creatively with the space and history of Birrarung Marr. Indonesian-Australian dancer Ade Suharto adds movement to sound, weaving between the striking architecture of the Federation Bells and the traditional gleaming bronze of the gamelan instruments. H:O:M:E is a durational performancebased installation exploring the ways in which locations, memories, stories and histories are connected through personal and collective narratives. Inside a large gallery space, the performers weave an experiential landscape of storytelling, sound, art-making and performance. The audience are invited to enter the landscape of the work and engage with the space and the stories being shared as an aural, tactile and performative experience. Acknowledging the transient and disrupted connections to homelands and heritage that are a feature of contemporary Australian discourse, H:O:M:E constructs a shifting framework to explore the relationship between geography and identity. Poetics, recollections, relational choreography, live and embodied art interactions are all drawn into the work to disrupt, dislodge and unpack the conflicted and paradoxical relationship between identity, place and belonging. Working in collaboration, H:O:M:E is enlivened by the aural narratives of sound artist Amy Hanley. Accompanying the work is an online portal through which members of the public are able to contribute their memories and stories of place and identity for use in the work. These contributions will be layered into the aural and visual elements of the piece, reflecting the connectivity between the many personal stories of place and identity of the community. Meeting at the Seafarer’s bridge on the Yarra, you will be welcomed into a little-known site nearby, a sanctuary for seafarers for the last 100 years and a symbol of old-world generosity amidst the rapidly shifting landscape of the Docklands. A journey through the quirky spaces at Mission to Seafarer’s site through a compelling contemporary ritual performance. The Echoes Projects artists evoke fragments of stories embedded in this site through mesmerising live soundscapes, movement and imagery. Ria Soemardjo, Janette Hoe and Pongjit (Jon) Saphakhun collaborate to create an ongoing exploration of contemporary rituals in response to urban sites in Australia. Tony Yap Company (TYC, Melbourne) and Surya Kencana (Java, Indonesia) join forces to create powerful contemporary trance ritual for one night only. Arresting and uncompromising, Shadow’s Light is also a deep meditation on basic elements for living – quietude alongside the ecstatic. Shadow’s Light draws on traditional Javanese trance practices from the Royal Court of Central Java (‘Scrimpi’) and the unbridled ecstatic trance practices of East Java (‘Bantengan’, Bull-Trance) and a hybrid of disciplines including contemporary dance and improvised music. MURTI, (‘moor-thee’) is a communal participatory installation about worship and ritual in our contemporary age. A Sanskrit term, ‘murti’ is an embodied icon of the Divine. Reflecting on the ancient Hindu ritual of bathing stone idols in water and milk, MURTI invites people to pour vibrant paint upon a largescale sculpture that reimagines the most revered and abstracted Hindu icon – the Lingam. Lingam, meaning sign or mark, is also known as the cosmic egg. It is iconic of the formless deity Shiva, and is typically a phallic symbol made from stone, alluding to the qualities of creation, destruction, and the infinite. Inspired by the symbolism and worship of the Lingam, MURTI exhibits a grand sculptural idol as a site for public Presented with

interaction, viewing and gathering. Through the re-enactment of these rituals by audience members, and the pouring of paint as a gesture of worship, MURTI questions ideas of sanctity, divinity and connection. Conceived by visual and performance artist Devika Bilimoria, MURTI is an invitation to an experiential interpretation of consecration that gives people an opportunity to reconnect with paint, intention and their body. All audience members will have opportunities to pour paint upon the idol throughout the opening night. The installation is available for viewing throughout the evening and a week to follow.

Two ancient cultures meet and collaborate through dance: Sampang Agung Centre for Performaing Arts (SACPA) from Pelem, East Java and Wotjobaluk dancers from the Wimmera, regional Victoria. From this remote and ancient land steeped in both aboriginal and colonial artefacts we enhance the visibility of our first nation footprint with a remote regional initiative. Kerala, Southern India, this work is inspired by the cultural barriers people from the Indian sub-continent face when exploring their sexuality. This ground-breaking work features text spoken by three voices in different stages of life – interspersed with electronic music and atmospheric recordings from the streets of India. The talented multi-instrumentalist emerged back in the mid-2000s when she released a string of exceptional bedroom recordings. Since then she hasn’t stopped creating, releasing the intricate and moving new album “quiver” earlier this year.

Bold, vibrant, evocative and revelling in spontaneity: Soni Irawan is a contemporary painter and printmaker from Indonesia. Soni is also a musician and one of the founders of a Yogyakarta experimental band, Seek Six Sick, therefore his artwork is greatly influenced by the spirit and energy of rock music: his choice of artistic techniques and medium are in line with his musical practice. Like jamming sessions, his canvases are filled with spontaneous strokes, sketchy figures and cut out pieces. He chooses oil bars to draw his lines since the medium gives him the similar feel of roughness and boldness as the sound created by a guitar - the instrument he plays

His subject matters, however, are largely personal that revolve around his families and his environment with the underlying interest in capturing the spirit of human survival in everyday life. Born in 1975, Soni Irawan completed his study in the Visual Art Faculty, Fine Arts Department, majoring in Printmaking at the Indonesian Art Institute situated in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Soni will also be live painting a new work at No Vacancy during the exhibition run, come visit and take part in this rare opportunity to see the artist at work.

METAMORPHOSIS Metamorphosis, the second instalment of I Am the Silk Road by composer Mindy Meng Wang, uses modern composition method, western musical instruments, electronic music samples, Chinese folk music, religious music, ancient court music and opera elements. that reflects Wang’s cross-cultural life experience. BEYOND THE STILLNESS The inspiration for the choreography of this performance is the concept of ‘stillness’ from Eastern Aesthetics. Stillness is a delicate state of balance. The surface may appear placid, but a violent confrontation is taking place underneath. The language of the dancers’ movements tells the hidden fluctuations occurring beneath a seemingly calm surface and the constant adjustments maintaining a composed appearance. Like walking on a balance beam, the dancers are constantly pulled by two opposing forces. Eventually, their struggles lead to an enlightenment. They are reconciled with both themselves and the multitude of reality and regain a clear and empty state of mind. Juxtaposing the joy and the destruction that food can bring, this immersive concert celebrates endangered Indonesian instruments whose primary function is centred around food production.
Will the bittersweet impact of the food industry on societies, health and the environment be sugar coated? This farm-to-table narrative will indeed impart some food for thought…
Luqmanul Chakim’s performance of instruments of the working class - Bundengan (duck herder’s rain shield and zither) from Java, Rantok (polyrhythmic rice pounding), and Gule Gending (fairy floss street vendor’s steal pans) from Lombok, will be complemented and contrasted by the Sindhen vocals (Javanese Court style) of internationally acclaimed Peni Candrarini. Bianca Gannon, performing post-minimalist piano and gamelan, propels this exchange into a contemporary art music context. This major work is further magnified by digitally enhanced shadow puppetry. The result is a bilateral dialogue around timely issues.

ENIGMA is an interactive art performance that engages all 5 senses creating an experience that includes diverse forms of art including live percussion, sound scape, dance, acting, visual and fine arts. The audience will be given an opportunity to interact with the performers, props, and the ceremony as a whole. They will not simply witness the performance but join in as part of the event. The audience is also asked to bring flowers or leaves from home which will act as a form of exchange allowing the audience to be part of the ceremony.

Art may be time and culture specific, but sound and sight knows no limits. The artists of SAtheCollective create their own sensescapes, exploring all possibilities not bound by time or culture. SAtheCollective presents a unique blend of sounds and sonic-inspired visuals that reflects a Southeast Asian sensibility. Growing up in post-colonial Singapore, the artists explore their identities through an inquiry into sound and visuals. They value being in the moment: fleeting, transcendent. with modern techniques, such as live looping and video projection light shows. Their music is a culmination of their diasporic roots, innovative process and sonic exploration. Spontaneous at every turn, each performance is a risk that the band takes as they delve into the question of identity. This will be SAtheCollective’s live debut performance in Melbourne – join them in this multi-sensory experience, immersing in collective time and space.
