Your Baby’s Movements Week by Week
Pregnancy
with
0-8 weeks - Your baby will begin to move at around 7 weeks pregnant and while these will be visible on an ultrasound scan you will not feel your baby move for another couple of months. 10 to 14 weeks - At 10 weeks your baby can flex and turn his head and bring his hands up to his face. By 11 weeks your baby can yawn! At 12 weeks the baby’s skeleton begins to develop into bone and although you still won’t feel them yet your baby is developing more defined movements. At 14 weeks your baby can begin to move his eyes. 20 to 24 weeks - It is likely to be around this time that you first notice your baby’s movements. It may feel like flutters at first, also known as quickening. If this is your first baby it can sometimes feel like gas or indigestion. Over the next few weeks it is a good idea to make a note of your baby’s activity pattern, do they kick more in the morning or evening? Do they have spells when they do a lot of movements? This will help you determine if there is a change in your baby’s regular pattern of movement. 24 to 28 weeks - Around this time you may start to notice when your baby gets hiccups. These will feel like regular, rhythmic, jerky movements. These are an involuntary reflex and so do not count as movement. You may begin to notice that your baby responds to outside sounds and jumps at sudden loud noises. Your baby may begin to follow a pattern for waking and sleeping. Very often this is a different pattern from yours, so when you go to bed at night, the baby may wake up and start kicking. 29 weeks - Your baby will begin to make smaller, more definite movements and the movements may begin to be more noticeable from the outside. This is a great time to get your partner involved as they can sit and talk to your bump and feel the baby kicking. It is a great bonding experience. 32 weeks - Your babies movements will gradually increase week by week until this time when they will plateau but NOT REDUCE. If you notice any reduction in your baby’s movements you should report it. The care you receive will
depend on your stage of pregnancy. Your baby will not run out of room and should continue to move up to and during birth. 36 weeks - Your baby can take up his final, usually head-down, position. This is more likely to happen at this stage if this is your first baby. The firm muscles of your uterus and tummy will help to keep him in place. The main movements you are likely to feel now are jabs from his arms and legs, and possibly painful kicks to your ribs. 36 to 40 weeks - Your baby will be getting larger, and won’t be rolling over as often. Instead, you may notice a persistent kick underneath your ribs on one side or the other. Although the type of movement will have changed, the frequency should not. You should continue to feel your baby as frequently as before. If you notice any change your baby’s movement you should report it to your midwife or antenatal ward.

Pregnancy
Finding your Feet
Feeding...
D
uring pregnancy, your health professional will ask you whether you intend to breastfeed once your baby is born. If you make the decision to breastfeeding, it is a good idea to prepare yourself for your breastfeeding journey and where possible to attend a local antenatal breastfeeding support group. This will enable you to understand; how you position your baby for feeding, how to ensure your baby latches correctly and helpful information to give you confidence to feed once your baby has been born. Breastfeeding can be very rewarding, but a lot of women can find it challenging at times too. From nervousness feeding in public through to sore nipples, breastfeeding can be a rollercoaster ride. Although breastfeeding is natural, it can be difficult for some women and babies to become established, this combined with changing hormones and sleep deprivation can make it an anxious and emotional time for new mothers. Take your time! Don’t expect things to work for you and your baby straight away. Remember that this is a whole new way of feeding for your baby as well as you! Call on support! There is plenty of support around, from breastfeeding helplines offering support over the phone to local agencies who can visit you at hospital or at home. Make sure that if you and your baby are struggling to adapt to breastfeeding, that you call on help. Ask friends and family for support too, even if it is to change a nappy or make you a drink. Look after yourself! It can be easy to panic and be concerned about your baby. However, eating well, drinking plenty of water and getting rest are all important factors to a healthy milk supply and successful breastfeeding

Ensuring that your baby is always latched on correctly is vitally important as this will help prevent sore nipples for you and will avoid your baby taking in too much air whilst feeding which can lead to your baby having discomfort from trapped wind. Newborn feeding times vary from 10 minutes to great lengths of time (45 minutes or more). Support cushions can come in very useful as your baby gets heavier and if you’re feeding in the night, you may want to invest in a comfy nursing chair or simply use pillows to sit up comfortably in bed. If you delivered by section, it is a good idea to ask your partner to pass the baby to you for feeds or to make sure that you don’t have to lean uncomfortably to pick up your baby to nurse. Hold your baby close and facing your breast and allow your nipple to rest on their nose. When their mouth opens really wide (wait for your baby to really widen their mouth) and allow your their head to tilt backwards. Once towards your nipple your baby will open their mouth. Once latched on, your baby should have their chin up against your breast. They should have a good amount of your breast in their mouth for feeding. If you find feeding painful, to release the suction, slide your little finger into their mouth. Your baby normally will come off the breast when they have finished feeding. However, you may find your baby uses your breast for comfort to fall asleep or when they are unwell. There are a few different positions you can try when exploring what is best for you and your baby. Cradle Position - In this position, your arm supports your baby. This position may be uncomfortable after a c-section and can take some getting used to. Cross Cradle Position - In this position, your baby lies across you with arm opposite
Pregnancy your breast holding them gently around the back of their neck. Holding them in this position allows their head to move forwards and backwards whilst feeding. This is an ideal position for early feeding when newborn. Rugby Ball Position - In this position, your baby is tucked under your arm like a rugby ball. Their nose is level with your nipple and their feet towards your back. This is a great position for c-section mothers who may find a cradle position uncomfortable. This is also a good position for feeding twins. Lying Down Position - With your baby lying alongside you and nose to nipple, you won’t have to support their weight and you both may find this a comfortable way to feed, particularly for night feeds, although you should be careful not to fall asleep in this position. It doesn’t matter what shape or size you are, your breasts are designed to feed your baby. Through pregnancy the hormone progesterone makes the areola swell (often causing that ‘tingling’ feeling). Inside your breast clusters of cells called ‘Lobes’ produce the milk which flows to the ducts. It is recommended that you exclusively breastfeed your baby for the first 6 months of their life and that you try to continue to feed your baby for the first two years of their life (or longer should you desire). Any length of time you decide to breastfeed for is invaluable to your baby. Before your breastmilk kicks in, your body produces a thicker substance called colostrums which provides natural antibodies to help your baby fight infection. This is often more difficult to express, so if you are planning of using a breast-pump don’t worry if you don’t see much being produced. Your breastmilk is tailor-made to meet the needs of your baby and will provide a variety of different tastes for your baby which can often help reduce allergies.
If your baby is reluctant to feed, this can be for a number of reasons including; Destressed when held due to assisted birth i.e. holding their head may be uncomfortable if their birth was assisted by forceps or ventouse. If you feel this is the case, ask your health professional to show you alternative feeding positions. Tongue Tied baby i.e. your baby’s tongue appears to be heartshaped at the tip. If your baby is tongue tied, this can lead to a poor latch, sliding off the nipple. Fatigue in feeding and other symptoms. It is important that you speak to your health professional if you suspect that your baby has these symptoms. With these situations, you may find expressing your breastmilk for feeding a suitable alternative. It is advisable to discuss this with your health professional before altering your feeding routine. For those who decide not to breastfeed, or find that breastfeeding doesn’t work for them, visit www.nct.org.uk/parenting/ bottle-feeding-your-baby for tips and support on bottle feeding your baby.

Each issue we will be putting YOUR questions to our panel of experts.
This issue, Midwife Rae, addresses the concern some parents have over their baby’s newborn testing.
E
very parent wants their child to be healthy and as health professionals we do as much as we can to give you that reassurance.
Can abnormalities be detected as in pregnancy? This process begins in pregnancy when we offer you blood tests and scans that screen for normality and abnormality. Once your baby is born further screening is offered to ensure you have a healthy infant and if any problems are picked up that they receive early treatment and the best possible care.
When is my baby first tested? One of the first screening tests you will be offered is the Newborn Examination. This takes place within the first 72 hours of your baby’s life. When your baby is born the midwife will do a preliminary check to see if your baby appears generally well but the Newborn Examination is more in depth and checks your baby from head to toe.
You will be invited to accompany your baby for the examination, which will take place either in the hospital or in some cases at your home. The examination is conducted by a midwife, neonatal nurse or doctor who have all had the same training and passed the same course to receive the specific qualification needed to undertake the screening.
Is there anything I will need to know for the testing to take place? They will ask you questions about family history such as if anyone has had problems with their heart, hips, eyesight or any other inherited conditions present in the family. If you are unsure ask your relatives in advance so you are prepared as this information is incredibly valuable in making sure any issues are picked up quickly and treated appropriately.
What is involved with newborn testing? The practitioner will check your baby’s head by measuring and feeling it, they will look in their eyes with an ophthalmoscope,

*Always speak to your own midwife or GP for any urgent concerns.
Birth & Beyond Can every abnormality be detected in newborn testing? It is important that you realise not every problem can be picked up at this first examination but the practitioner will tell you if at this stage they are detecting anything of concern.
listen to your baby’s heart and lungs with a stethoscope, inspect their ears, mouth, hands, feet and spine, they will check your baby’s genitals to ensure they look correct and in particular for little boys that their testes have descended to the right place, they will also check your baby’s hips by rotating them slightly to make sure they are in the sockets and not dislocated. Be prepared that most babies will cry a little during the examination, this doesn’t mean they are in any pain they just don’t like the fact they have been undressed and disturbed!
The examination is repeated at 6-8 weeks as some things may not be apparent during the first 72 hours. Most parents will however gain a good level of assurance that all is well once these examinations have been performed and that their baby is well and healthy, which is the news we all want to receive. Birth & Beyond
Finding the Right Carrier for You...
“Babywearing” has the simple meaning of holding or carrying a baby or small child using a baby carrier. Babywearing is a very natural thing and has been practiced for centuries around the world.
T
here are many benefits to Babywearing which start from how an intimate maternal bond is created through the closeness and physical contact between the Mother and baby. The Father or Partner carrying the baby has benefits for their own bond too. Physical contact with your baby can increase your Oxytocin and means that breastfeeding is made easier. “When a baby is near his source of milk and comfort, he does not have to use much energy to get his monther’s attention; he can use this energy to grow instead.” (Sears and Sears 2001 – www.lalecheleague.org). Oxytocin also helps lower the risk of postpartum depression and infants who are carried are calmer.
older siblings. Slings/wraps are also extremely practical for situations where it may be difficult to use a pushchair for example at the airport.Slings are increasingly also becoming an item of fashion as there are so many different styles and designs available on the market.
Babywearing is also beneficial to your baby’s development. Correct babywearing should offer a comfortable positioning for your baby that supports them rather than providing discomfort to their legs, hips or other parts of their body. Consultations with your local Sling Library can be very beneficial to ensure that you find the sling/wrap that works best for you and your baby. Babywearing aids the development of your baby’s head minimising the risk of ‘flat head sydrome’ which can be caused through extensive time lying in carseats or prams.
If you have a slightly older baby (or even a toddler), don’t think that you have ‘missed the boat’ when it comes to babywearing. There are many carriers and slings on the market that can offer a comfortable hold for children as old as 4. Babywearing isn’t just suitable for the Summer, but can be used all year round (even providing warmth and comfort on colder days). With so many benefits, all parents and parents-to-be should consider becoming a ‘Babywearer’.
Babywearing can be used to provide skin-toskin contact and time with your baby (also known as Kangaroo care). Premature and sick babies can particularly benefit from this as it is a positive way of communicating your love to you baby, can help them settle and rest which is ideal for inbetween feeds or care. Bliss (for babies born too soon, too small, too sick) offers further advice and guidance at www.bliss.org. uk and your Neonatal team will discuss this too. There are now wraps and even specially designed clothing that can provide a safe space for you to offer this skin-to-skin Kangaroo care. For information on clothing visit www.nct.org.uk or speak to your local sling library for advice. Babywearing is ideal for multitasking (something parents soon learn to become good at) as it frees up the hands to be able to carry out household chores or provide ease when chasing around after

eveloped with the help of Speech and Language experts and launched in January 2001, the "Sing and Sign" programme has since taught tens of thousands of parents across the UK how to sign with their babies and encourage amazing early communication.
So what is baby signing? As a part of typical development before speech is well established, babies naturally use a combination of gestures and sounds to help their parents understand them. For example they may point, shake their heads, clap their hands and wave "bye-bye". Now is a good time to introduce some extra gestures to help your baby communicate. It's easy to do and your baby will really enjoy it! Why not try milk, more, change nappy, or tired? Baby signing is wonderfully rewarding and fantastic fun. You will be amazed by what your baby is capable of telling you before being able to talk!
What to expect in Sing and Sign classes... Sing and Sign classes are relaxed, great fun and a wonderful way to learn all you need to know about baby signing! We are thrilled to have won numerous awards including “What’s on for Little Ones” Best National Toddler Development Activity! Previous awards include “Best Baby Signing Class” and “Best Nationwide Activity for Under 2’s” The course will cover over 100 signs relating to your baby’s world. As you begin the term you are not expected to instantly remember all the signs shown, or to use them straight away with your baby! Learning the Sing and Sign way is gradual and effortless, building week on week. Classes are themed and the weekly handouts build into your own comprehensive guide to baby signing. Find out more at

hen I became a mum to Libby in 2010 and then Oliver 2012, I knew that I wanted to work with children, and I had always loved music and singing so I thought that running baby and toddler music classes would be such a lovely way to earn a living. When I found out that the existing Caterpillar Music franchise in Liverpool and Crosby was available, I knew I couldn’t let the opportunity pass and so I jumped at the chance – although it was pretty terrifying taking on my own business! I have now been running lively music classes for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers since January 2015 and I can honestly say that I love my job! It is so lovely to see a room full of smiling faces and the little ones enjoying the session so much. It has been such a privilege watching the children develop over the past eight months from first waves and smiles, interacting with favourite puppets, learning to count, learning to walk and to dance!

It has been a juggling act over the past 8 months as I have been running four weekly classes as well working my old part-time job and looking after two pre-schoolers. It is great to be able to fit classes around my family, spending time with my children during the day and carrying on with other elements of the business during the evening. They are starting school and pre-school in September and I’m so I am looking forward to walking them to and from school every day. As I will be running Caterpillar Music full time from September, I am really excited to launch some new classes over the coming months.

Every week the sessions follow a similar format and have a different theme. We sing lots of nursery rhymes and action songs, using fabulous puppets, a variety of exciting percussion instruments and all kinds of other props such a parachutes, chiffon scarves, bubbles and more! You really see the little ones come on and watch their confidence blossom. My own two children adore Caterpillar Music, and I love hearing them singing songs at home which I know they have learnt in class.

Inspirational Nursery Ideas
Parents are constantly searching for new, inspirational ideas when decorating their children’s bedrooms. When your baby arrives, the requirements of their nursery are generally to meet your own needs i.e. changing station complete with all accessories for easy changing, storage for easy tidying etc. However, as your child grows, they will have their own demands from their nursery. They may enjoy this space to be creative, to learn and to explore their surroundings. With this in mind, it is a great idea to fill their nursery with exciting features. MagPaint offer great creative paint products including blackboard paint and their famous Magnet Paint.
RAR Replica Chair - a contemporary rocking chair for any modern nursery. £49.99
The paint is black in colour (due to the iron powder contained within it) so you will then need to paint your chosen colour on top. Although you will need around 4 coats of magnet paint to get the desired affect. Once the painting is complete, the results are fantastic and children just LOVE interacting with what would usually be a boring wall. Not only does it make the wall an interactive and playful environment for your child, but it also means that you can change the decor and accessories in the room with great ease. Pictures can be held up by magnets and simply removed/moved as desired no need for hammer and nails or drills! MagnetPaint has been qualified for the European safety standard for childrens toys: EN71-3. Visit mag-paint.co.uk for more information

Back to School - A Survival Guide
A
s the new academic year approaches, many parents can feel anxious about the start of term. Perhaps this is even your child’s first time at nursery or school and you are anxious about how they will take to the new routine (or indeed how you will)? In preparation for school, Mummy and Me have put together some useful tools to help get your child ‘school ready’. Being able to dress themselves is something very useful at nursery/ school. Pacey (Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years) offer some great resources including a ‘Ready, Steady Dress’ Dressing to Impress worksheet. This is a FREE downloadable activity sheet with images of school uniform for your child to colour in and piece together. This is a great visual when getting themselves ready. Visit www.pacey.org.uk and search ‘being school ready’. A worry many parents have is whether their child will make friends and be happy at school. When you are out and about with your child encourage them to ask the names of other children they encounter when playing and to introduce themselves. Set a good example to your child, don’t be shy yourself and introduce yourself to other parents and perhaps discuss arranging playdates outside of school. Gross and Fine Motor skills are learnt through play and ultimately lead to your child being able to write using a pencil or to follow activities in the classroom. To help these along the way you can; Play catch on a regular basis, stack blocks together, ensure that you child holds a pencil correctly, string beads on a necklace and use safety scissors to cut out shapes. Social and emotional development plays an important role in your child’s academic learning. At school your child will be expected to tidy up after playing with toys. To encourage this at home, you could
Creative Learning
implement a ‘ransom’ box for toys left out after a set tidy-up. Taking turns and sharing, are both things children can find difficult. Playing board games encourages your child to learn to take turns. For 2-7 year olds, Orchard Toys offer some great games that are simple to follow and fun to play. Visit www.orchardtoys.com/ games to view the range. At school your nursery/school, your child will begin to learn letters and words. A great way to encourage this along is to play ‘I-Spy’ whilst out and about with your child. Using Phonics i.e. ‘T’ is T rather than tee or ‘S’ is ‘ssss’ rather than ‘es’, have your child identify the letter sounds different day-today items begin with. You will be amazed how quickly they pick this up and enjoy impressing you with their knowledge! Children grow so fast, so enjoy every single moment and don’t put pressure on you or your child to know too much before they start school. Best of luck for the new term!
