Pregnancy
Proud parents share their Home Birth Experiences with Mummy and Me Magazine. Suddenly, it became clear, there was only one option for me - I needed to return home to birth. The lovely midwife was in favour but laughed and said no-one had asked to be discharged at this point before - she didn’t know what to do! Another two hours and a chat with a matron and consultant later I was discharged from hospital.
BABY CHARLIE’S HOME BIRTH

abour pains started 11 days after my due date. They continued to wax and wane for the next 36 hours as I pottered about, went for coffee with my husband and toddler, and rested for the imminent birth.
Seven hours after setting off from home to be induced, we returned to our oasis of calm where we had the home birth of our dreams. By Saturday morning the contractions were As soon as I stepped through the door, still irregular (although some were pretty contractions returned to three in ten (three intense) so hubby and I went into hospital in twenty in hospital) and we went straight to be induced - I had been given to bed to rest - I was physically an appointment earlier in the and emotionally drained. week and we convinced We informed Tammy, my Suddenly, it became ourselves it was the best wonderful midwife, who clear, there was only one thing to do instead of told us to try to relax and have a whole weekend of option for me - I needed to to let her know when I irregular contractions. was rested from a good return home to birth. sleep. Pregnancy body knew what to do and that I needed rest. So, I had a rather strange, delirious hour long sleep with my husband cuddling me and rubbing my back. Once awake, I got back in the pool and an hour later our baby was born.
After a while bonding in the pool and delayed cord clamping, we were all sitting in the living room enjoying a brew.
BABY CHARLIE’S HOME BIRTH
Unlike my first hospital labour 21 months earlier (which resulted in a forceps delivery), I knew exactly what to do and a few primal lion-like roars later, whilst kneeling in the water, holding onto hubby, baby Charlie appeared in the water. He was born in the caul - Tammy had to pull it over his head. During the whole labour I had forgotten all about my waters breaking (first labour had started with waters breaking suddenly in the middle of the night) and artificial rupture of membranes had never been mentioned - this all added to the overall gentle, personal, wonderful experience. As Charlie was arriving, I was overwhelmed with how quickly and naturally it was happening. I did not have to consciously push and I found the final stages the easiest, as I could feel our baby descend down the birth canal. Although intensely painful, my main emotion was feeling empowered and I am so proud that I remained calm, confident and in control throughout my seven hour labour. Keeping mobile, upright, visualisations of special places, a calming music mix, sucky sweets and the best husband in the world all helped me through it. And wonderful midwives Tammy and Rachel who knew exactly when to support and when to just ‘let us be’. After a while bonding in the pool and delayed cord clamping, we were all sitting in the living room enjoying a brew and the special biccies I had bought many weeks previously, with baby Charlie enjoying his first breastfeed. Going to, and waking up in, the comfort of our own bed, was absolutely fantastic.

Pregnancy I S A AC
I was 11 days past my "due date", and the point of desperation had long passed. Almost anything would send me into a crazy, venomous rage of disgust and fury. I almost punched my fist through the screen of the laptop when the spell checker wouldn't recognise the word "Hong" in Hong Kong.
Without sounding like a complete loon, I find the feeling of contractions quite pleasurable (to a certain point!). I found myself quietly celebrating each one, egging them on, and anticipating the next. It was an entirely different sensation this time, compared to my first experience of labour. I was fully aware of what my body was doing and I took delight in savouring and acknowledging every sensation and feeling. I felt grateful and honoured to be having this experience.
BABY ISAAC’S HOME BIRTH
I
was sat at the dining table when it started, adding the finishing touches to a paint-bynumbers picture of a deranged-looking peacock.
Just as I'd hoped, at 3am, I woke up to more tightening feelings and I crept eagerly downstairs, leaving Paul to sleep. I sat in the dining room again, and relaxed.
Soon it was 7am. Paul was awake and had joined me, and I felt ravenous. I decided it was time for sausages and ketchup. I inhaled an entire pig's worth and then licked the plate like a dog. We spent the rest of the morning playing Crash Bandicoot while I bounced up and down on my birth-ball.
I prescribed myself a cheap ÂŁ1.99 paint-bynumbers to keep me relaxed and occupied, (and to protect the surrounding community). I had promised myself that baby In hindsight, I'm pretty sure Isaac would arrive as soon I looked slightly strange. as the painting was done, This is one of the many so I'd been spending every reasons why a home birth spare moment in a state of deep concentration, was always going to be a rushing to get it finished.
I plugged the laptop into the speakers and danced around the living room to Boy George and George Michael. I found that I needed to disconnect my mind from my body when I got a surge, and as I felt better option for me. one start, I let my mind I sat back on the chair, become part of the music admiring my finished masterpiece and soon while I left my body to do it's work. This realised that I was getting familiar tightening really helped me deal with the intensity of the feelings. Shoving the painting to the side to surges and stay relaxed and in control. make way for my laptop, I excitedly googled Despite my very random and terrible choice "contraction timer". They were 5 minutes in music, it really did sound amazing. I felt apart, and 30 seconds long. With my sweaty, enraptured, euphoric, almost drunk. In bloated pork-hands, I grabbed my phone and hindsight, I'm pretty sure I looked slightly text my partner, Paul, followed by our superstrange. This is one of the many reasons why duper awesome midwife, Lisa Jenkins, and let a home birth was always going to be a better them know things had begun. option for me. Paul was soon home from work, and we spent All the laughing, dancing and general our evening cheerfully stuffing our faces with merriment had moved things along quite cheese burgers, and power-walking arm-in-arm nicely for me, so it felt like time to relax and around the neighbourhood in the rain. Halfway take it easy in the bath for a while. I'd started through a film, I realised the tightenings had to need to focus on my breathing, I heard eased off, and, feeling deflated, we made our the doorbell ring. Downstairs, we sat with Lisa in the lounge and chatted for a while. I felt embarrassed to do my deep breathing weirdo-ness, so I forced myself to carry on talking through my surges (which had returned) and pretended nothing was happening. Lisa, being the super intuitive midwife that she is, had cottoned on and announced that she was going to leave us alone so things could progress and get established. She left at around ten past 12.
to my first son, despite not having any pain relief, I didn't feel a thing. This time however, I felt every single millimeter of baby Isaac's descent. It wasn't exactly pleasant at the time, but I have looked back many times since and relived that moment with complete awe and fascination. It was truly amazing.
BABY ISAAC’S HOME BIRTH
After only 7 minutes of heaving, baby Isaac WHOOSHED out into the water behind me. I turned around and frantically scanned the pool with my eyes, trying to locate him. There he was, floating with his little bum pointing up towards the sky. Paul and I both reached into the pool together, and brought him up to the surface, one of the happiest and fondest memories of my entire life.
Alone with Paul again, I started feeling as though a powerful energy had taken over me, which took every ounce of effort to keep under control. I was aware that if I didn't stay focused, I could lose myself. I went up to the bathroom, and feeling slightly agitated, warned Paul that I thought maybe Lisa should come I clambered back.
I grasped his warm, slippery little body and held him against my bare skin. I immediately gushed over how much he looked like his older brother. But then started to panic when I realised he hadn't yet started to cry. Lisa reassured me he was fine, and was "pinking up" very nicely. Paul and I didn't actually hear Isaac's first cry until 8 hours later, when he filled his trousers for the very first time!
into the pool like a drunken heffalump and immediately started feeling pushy.
I paced around upstairs for a few minutes and decided that yes, Lisa should DEFINITELY come back. Everything felt a little bit too low and heavy ‘downstairs’. Lisa returned, only half an hour after she'd left. Bending over the sofa, I started feeling a bit sicky and speculated if perhaps it was because I was hungry. In truth, it was because I was in transition. At the time, this didn't strike me as a possibility, I was far too calm and relaxed, far too aware and in control.
As soon as it was ready, and without much dignity, I clambered into the pool like a drunken heffalump and immediately started feeling pushy. Instead of being the wonderfully positive and fearless woman that I hoped to be, I very pessimistically thought to myself, "ohhhhh cr*p. Here is the part where I have to heave a massive baby out. This is going to feel terrible". I decided there was no point prolonging the inevitable and cracked on with it. I think Paul was slightly alarmed at the terrifying cow-like noises. I literally felt everything. That sounds daft, but when I gave birth

20 minutes later, Isaac's cord had released all of the blood that was rightfully his into his little body where it belonged, and Paul very proudly cut the cord. To our astonishment, Lisa excitedly noted that there was a trueknot in the cord. I then delivered the placenta. Isaac's first breastfeed had helped my worn out womb contract and release it without the need for injections and intervention. After a well-deserved shower, I sat down with our brand new baby boy (and a cheese and tomato sandwich). I'd given birth to a 9 pounds 6 ounces baby human without a single vaginal examination, without any drugs or pain relief, and without even the tiniest graze. The whole event was so ridiculously normal, it was almost boring! I felt utterly blessed to have been given Lisa as our midwife. She made me feel empowered and filled me with nothing but confidence and strength. She respected me and my body, and she respected baby Isaac and his journey into the world.

You may have lots of questions relating to recovery and what you are physically able to do. Doing the wrong types of exercise can lead to more harm than good. Tumble Tots
an Editor’s Review Words: Michelle Thompson Magazine Founder & Director

hen my daughter Bethany and I set foot in the church hall ready for her first Tumble Tots session, we were instantly greeted by a fun and colourful environment. It was also very apparent how much the children enjoy themselves at a Tumble Tots sessions, as I watched eager toddlers taking their helper’s hand to lead them to the inviting activities. Being new to the sessions, my first thoughts were how complex some of the activities looked, with climbing ladders taller than my toddler! However, the more complex activities have a Tumble Tots instructor on hand to assist you and your child - and it is actually quite eyeopening how quickly a toddler grasps how to use each piece of equipment! Each session is well structured and my 2 year old’s group is split into 4 different phases. During phase 1, children are encouraged to experiment and explore as their adult helper and the trained Tumble Tots teachers assist and guide you. Although the equipment is laid out as an assault course to work around, many toddlers (mine included) find activities they particularly enjoy and race around to start the activity over immediately after completing it. Phase 2 of the session is a circle time, here children sit with their adult helper and join in fun songs

and actions led by a Tumble Tots teacher. There are Tumble Tots songs to start and finish that are easy to learn and are used each session for familiarity. Then some old favourites thrown in there too! Phase 3 is back onto the equipment. Every few weeks, the equipment is changed to provide new and exciting challenges for your toddler. Trained Tumble Tots teachers help your toddler learn how to climb up a ladder, straddle the platform ‘riding their horse’, and carefully climb down a ladder on the other side. Each piece of equipment has been well thought out to aid your child’s development and teach skills of agility, balance, coordination and climbing. The final phase is back to the group circle for more fun songs and the highly exciting ‘sticker time’ (a toddler session must have!). Tumble Tots can be started from 6 months with their GymBabies sessions designed from wriggling through to walking. Once walking, your child moves up to Tumble Tots. Tumble Tots is split into 4 different stages; Walking to 2 years, 2 to 3 years, 3 years to school age, and Circuit Fun (walking to 5 years). It needn’t finish there either as the programme goes on to GymBobs session designed for up to 7 years and occasionally offered as an extra activity at your child’s primary school.
Early Years then. It’s great to see that in 2015 the sessions are still just as popular and just as enjoyed. There are children in the sessions of all abilities and is great to see even reserved children like my daughter enjoying themselves and wanting to explore. I would highly recommend Tumble Tots to any parent or carer – all are welcome. There are single parents, grandparents, parents of children with special needs and stay at home Dads at our session.
When you become a Tumble Tots Member you are sent a pack of goodies including CD’s, stickers, a Right Start Tumble Tots parenting magazine, sports bag and more! You also get a Tumble Tots t-shirt to wear at the sessions. This gives your child a sense of belonging and identity. My daughter loves the sessions so much that the very sight of her bright yellow t-shirt drying on the clothes maiden gets her jumping up and down with excitement shouting “Tumble Tots”.
Tumble Tots is Nationwide and there are sessions in Southport, Preston, Wigan, Ormskirk, Crosby, Liverpool, Runcorn, Widnes, Wirral, Chester, Warrington, Stockton Heath, Prescot, St.Helens, Altricham, Macclesfield, Worsley, Urmston, Stockport, West Didsbury, Knutsford and other areas covered by Mummy and Me Magazine.
Tumble Tots has just celebrated their 35th Anniversary and I remember my cousins going as toddlers and loving the sessions back
Check out the website tumbletots.com for your nearest session, or if you’re based in Liverpool you can contact Steph Lumley on 07738 755 090 who would love to welcome you at a session.

TUMBLE TOTS - AN EDITOR’S REVIEW
Whether your child starts as a crawling baby, or a toddling tot, they will soon learn and you will see their development in a short period of time. My 2 year old, Bethany, is often unsteady on her feet and we have really noticed the difference in her balance and coordination since starting the Tumble Tots programme. It is also fascinating to see her confidence grow each session as she becomes more familiar with the equipment and how to use it.

Place the second sponge on top of the cream and press down. For the icing, melt the jam in a saucepan until runny, then spread over the top of the cake. Melt the chocolate and butter together in a small bowl set over a pan of simmering water (make sure the bowl doesn’t touch the water), then leave to cool and thicken a little. Spread over the top of the cake. Leave to set for 1 hour, then decorate with raspberries and petals and serve with pouring cream.

Beat the butter, sugar, vanilla and salt, then mix in the flour with a wooden spoon. Form into a ball with your hands. If the dough is very soft, wrap in clingfilm and chill for 30 minutes. 3. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 2 mm (1⁄16 in) thick. Cut out 16 heart shapes using the larger cutter. Put 8 hearts on a baking sheet. Using the smaller cutter, cut out centres from the remaining hearts. Transfer these heart-shaped rings to the other baking sheet. Chill for 1 hour. Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas 4. 4. Bake the rings for 10 – 12 minutes and the solid hearts for 13 – 15 minutes, until slightly golden around the edges. Leave to cool for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. 5. Melt the chocolate in a small bowl set over a pan of warm water, stirring frequently. Remove from the pan when there are still a few lumps, and stir until smooth. 6. Leave for 10–20 minutes to cool and thicken slightly. 7. Meanwhile, dust the cookie rings with icing sugar. 8. When the chocolate is cool, spread 1/2 tablespoon over each solid cookie, leaving a gap around the edge. Put 1/4 teaspoon of jam on top. Place the cookie rings on top, and add a little extra jam in the middle if needed. Chill for 10 to 20 minutes until the chocolate has set, then store in a cool place. MAKES 16 BISCUITS

WORDS: EMMA WRIGHT - THE RARE BEAR BOUTIQUE
I
think a lot of ‘mumpreneur’ journeys start with redundancy. When I lost my full-time job I felt an initial flood of panic, followed by a wave of relief. At that point my daughter was 2 and it was becoming apparent that her ‘global developmental delay’ was actually something more significant and complex. I felt guilty leaving her at nursery or with relatives for 10 hours a day and the number of appointments I had to attend (various therapists, doctors and also classes for me to learn how to communicate with her) meant that any new employer would soon get fed up with me. I was already making toys, pictures and clothes as a hobby and had a small following on social media so I got myself a part-time job for security and set about building my business. It took a few months of dawdling before I really launched in earnest. I opened a small unit at Inglenook Lavender farm in Rainford, selling handmade gifts and haberdashery items. Although I was probably working more than ever, the hours were flexible (sewing late into the night) and I was able to spend more time with
Mumpreneur!
my daughter Erin. She inspired me to make bright, happy things. I believe in letting children be children and hate to see kids’ clothes on the high street which look like mini teenage or adult versions. There’s plenty of time for them to wear black or leopard print when they’re older. Boy’s clothes especially seem to be very conservative and trendy instead of fun and practical.
Soon I was also using my experience from previous jobs to teach sewing and craft workshops and in December I took the plunge and opened a ‘proper’ shop called ‘The Rare Bear Boutique’ on Allerton Road, Liverpool. It stocks all of my Rare Bear Ltd range and also handmade clothing and accessories for women and children by lots of other local and national makers. I’ve tried to make the shop a friendly place with an activity table for kids and the offer of a seat and a cuppa for any mums wanting to feed their babies (or actually just anyone who fancies a sit down and a chat!) I’ll be running workshops from the shop and I am also planning more children’s craft activities. Mummy & Me readers can enjoy 10% off everything in the shop and off my courses until the end of March and you can also pick up the latest issue at our counter.

Stepping Stones to
Starting School...
M
any of our readers will have recently submitted their primary school applications. Once your decision on school has been made, you may be wondering what else you can do in order to give your child the best start for their education?
child is different, so take your time.
The first day that you leave your child at nursery or school can be difficult for both you and your little one. Prepare your child for school can start from your baby’s first days, through simple things such as; interaction with other children at playgroups or playdates at home, learning to listen to instruction, sharing their toys and ensuring that your child is up-to-date with their immunisations.
For some children, the idea of big school can be appealing, but to others it can seem frightening. Talk to your child about school and how exciting it will be to make friends, paint pictures and the many fun activities they will do. Introduce them to the school building, showing them where they will be going. It is also a good idea to eventually do this around the start or finish of a school day when there will be lots of children about. If possible, meet the teacher or visit the school together. Make buying your child’s school uniform an exciting trip and ideally something that you do 1 to 1 so it is ‘all about them’.
There are some practical skills that will help your child in their new environment (and help their teacher too!). If your child is about to start nursery/pre-school, it is advisable to discuss toilet training requirements with the teaching staff several months prior to them starting. This will give you adequate time to tackle potty training. By the time your child starts school, providing there is no medical condition restricting this stage in development, generally it is expected that your child will be toilet trained. Potty training usually works best between 18 months and 30 months. The sooner you introduce the potty to your child’s environment, the easier the process will be. Although ‘accidents’ can be frustrating, it is important to stay calm. By the age of 3 most children are dry during the day. But when absorbed in an activity, excited or upset it is not uncommon for your child to have the odd accident. For guidance on potty training visit www.nhs.uk and search ‘potty-training tips’. Guidelines are great, but remember that every
36 |
WWW.MUMMYANDMEMAGAZINE.CO.UK
Once potty trained, it is important to take this a stage further and to teach your child personal hygiene to clean themselves and wash their hands. It is also helpful for your child to learn to undress and dress themselves.
There are lots of ‘starting school’ story books, visit your local library and see what’s on offer. It is good to talk about starting school and get them thinking about it ahead of time as this will reduce anxiety. Encourage your child to be sociable. Even if you have been a ‘playgroup’ parent, it doesn’t necessarily mean that your child knows how to talk to other children, introduce themselves and ask the other child’s name. Many children (and parents) worry that they won’t have any friends at school, so giving them these practical skills will really help. Generally, most children are fantastic at playing with new people anyway.
From a practical point of view, purchase name labels and label EVERYTHING! When choosing items such as coats and shoes for starting school, buy items that are easy to put on. Most pre-schools and primary schools offer jogging bottoms and polo shirts. Even if you don’t feel they look as cute as a little uniform, they really are practical! Avoid fiddly buttons, buckles and zips. Instead choose; skirts with elasticated waists, shoes with Velcro fastenings and easy open bags/lunch boxes. In terms of ability, it is important not to stress about whether they know how to write or read. Focus on their confidence and happiness. If you want them to learn some basics, patiently try to introduce different activities and fun games that will help get them on the right path. Reading to your child is a MUST and can start from even before your child is born! Einstein himself once said “If you want your children to be intelligent read them fairy tales”. Teach them to recognise their own name. It is also a good idea to teach them the alphabet song and basic counting. From a health point of view, it is important that you book your child in for their 4-in-1 pre-school
booster. This vaccine is given when your child reaches 3 years and 4 months as protection against Whooping Cough, Polio and other illnesses. For more information on this vaccination, speak to your GP/Health Visitor or visit www.nhs.uk and search ‘4-in-1 pre-school booster’.
Once your child has started school, remember to talk to them about their day; what they enjoyed, who they played with etc. Expect them to be very tired, so make sure that they have a good balanced diet and rest. It is also a nice idea to keep a “My first year at school” scrapbook, adding writing, drawings and photos from their first to last day. It will be a wonderful keepsake that you can treasure.

1. Cut a piece of tissue paper slightly smaller than the size of your candle. 2.
Put a piece of waxed paper down to protect your work surface (the paint will leak through the tissue). Then dip fingertip in acrylic paint and press on tissue paper to make the flower petals and bumblebee bodies. (It works best to dip in the paint, press on a piece of scrap paper to remove some of the excess, then press on the tissue paper) .

Using paint or marker, add additional details to your picture. I also wrote the words “ Happy Mother’s Day” in the bee’s trail, added each child’s name next to their flower and added the year.
4.
Allow your paint to dry, then wrap the tissue paper around the candle.
5.
Get a piece of waxed paper and wrap it on top of your tissue paper design. Use the excess waxed paper as a handle.
6.
Using a heat embossing gun or hair dryer, blow hot air over your design. As the wax begins to melt, you’ll see the white tissue paper start to disappear and your design will look brighter. You may need to move your waxed paper handle so you can apply heat to the whole candle.
7.
Carefully remove the waxed paper to reveal your decorated candle. You’ll see that your artwork has now become part of the candle itself.
