Letter from the Editor

Hello lovely readers, Many thanks for picking up this July issue of Mummy and Me Magazine! This month celebrates the 1st birthday of Prince George and in this issue we highlight a fantastic treat for any Prince or Princess, available at Harrods, London. My eldest daughter (Eden) recently celebrated her 3rd birthday and experienced this ‘royal’ treatment - it is simply enchanting! Also this issue, we celebrate 15 years of Julia Donaldson children’s favourite ‘The Gruffalo’ and how forests around the country have fantastic Gruffalo trails on offer featuring carved sculptures of the ‘terrible tusked’ beast himself. At 34 weeks pregnant (as this goes out), I’ve certainly reached the ‘difficult to paint you toe nails’ stage in pregnancy! I’m really looking forward to meeting her now and hope that the birth goes as I would like it. To ensure that your birth goes your way, it is important to write your birth plan and in this issue we give you some tips on how to go about this. If you haven’t already done so, please do head over to our facebook page www.facebook.com/mummyandmemagazine for additional tips, advice and information. Enjoy your July issue, see you next month!

he Raspberry is iCandy’s new state-of-the-art lightweight compact fold stroller. Hopping on and off buses, from cafés to cabs, up kurbs and through the London underground, with its agile chassis, ease of fold and innovative, hidden spacious storage capsule, the quick and easy pushchair is the smart choice for urban adventures with your new born – or toddler. Weighing an astonishing 8.4KG, the Raspberry is one of the lightest luxury pushchairs on the market and will be sure to keep you on the move. The latest addition to the iCandy range has been conceived from consumer feedback and given life by iCandy’s design team. Part of the design brief was to ensure comfort; the seat unit is luxuriously soft with added cushioning for a comfortable ride, made from a breathable, water resistant fabric for ease of cleaning. Already recognised for its pioneering design, the Raspberry has received various awards, including the international Red Dot: Design 2014 award earlier this year. Lightweight, compact and manoeuvrable, the award-winning Raspberry keeps you on the move and is suitable for children weighing up to 15kg. The seat unit is highly adaptable, the option of a lieflat position allows the stroller to be used from birth, as well as parent or world facing. The 3-position reclining seat adjusts to suit the mood of your infant or toddler. The stroller will fold with the seat unit in situ or it can be removed to make storage of the Raspberry even more compact. The innovative seat folds like a clam shell protecting the seat unit from muddy wheels when stored. When folded the Raspberry is compact and freestanding making it easy to fold, carry and store. Parents take pride in the luxurious look of an iCandy, but it’s in the handling where iCandy pushchairs excel. Styled to perfection, the Raspberry comes with a state-of-the-art wheel design to complement the innovative tyres with 4-wheel independent suspension, ensures smooth strolling for both

parent and child no matter the surface or bumps in the road. The chassis comes in two colours, a sleek matt black or natural brushed aluminium with the iCandy logo lasered into the frame for that perfect, lasting finish. To allow you to customise your Raspberry the hood is available in 7 fresh colour ways - Arctic Night, Atlantic, Lush, Beetle, Sunflower, Wisteria, Fuchsia. What’s more, the quick and easy pushchair goes the extra mile: its unique iCandy accessories allow your Raspberry to grow with your little one. For newborns iCandy have created a fabulous Newborn Pod keeping your baby warm and comforted with a knitted outer fabric and luxury inner fleece lined double layer wrap. The design also makes it easy to take your baby in and out of the stroller, whether they are awake and wriggling or sound asleep. For the older child there is a larger footmuff with a non-slip base, Ripstop performance fabric on the outer lining and a cosy inner fleece lining to keep your little one warm and snug. iCandy know your child likes to have independence and movement so on the front there is a large fleece-lined pocket for the child to keep their hands warm or store their favourite toy. Both the Newborn Pod and Footmuff are also available in 7 stunning colours so you can choose to match the hood or you can mix and match to your own taste with over 100 fashionable combinations. - The Raspberry will launch in the UK and Ireland Summer 2014. - The Raspberry will be available directly at all iCandy retailers nationwide including John Lewis. - The Raspberry will retail from £460.00 - The Raspberry is compatible with the Maxi-Cosi cabrio, Pebble and the BeSafe iZiGo infant carrier car seats.

ing and Sign is a fun and exciting class designed to teach parents how to encourage their little ones to communicate through signs! Babies learn to use their hands much earlier than they learn to talk and using signs and gestures to communicate is actually a very natural part of a babies development (ie waving and pointing). Sing and Sing classes build on this instinct by introducing babies to a wider range of signs that will help them express their thoughts to their parents. There are many benefits to babies who are able to sign. The main ones include: Helping to understand your baby’s needs, thoughts and ideas Allowing you to enjoy seeing their personalities much more clearly as they develop Reducing frustration (for baby and parents!) so fewer tantrums!!! Enhancing early vocabulary and understanding Encouraging the development of speech Enriching your baby’s relationships Building confidence and self-esteem Stimulating your baby’s intellectual and emotional development Rachel - Chester & Wirral - 01244 372 970 Becky - Liverpool - 07813 630 665 Nicki - Warrington - 07852 155 190 WWW.MUMMYANDMEMAGAZINE.CO.UK

he aim of the Infant Feeding Team is to encourage parents to make an informed choice about the feeding choices for their baby and support them in that choice. The Infant Feeding Team is based at Whiston hospital and offers support and advice to parents regarding their feeding choices. What’s on offer?

We offer antenatal feeding awareness sessions for parents. Parents can attend for evidence based information on infant feeding and gain SurestartNoticeStHelens.indd 1 practical skills. This helps parents to feel empowered to breast feed and make an informed choice on how they will feed their baby.

The Breast Feeding Drop in Clinic The ‘Breast Feeding Drop In’ clinic is available every Friday from 10-12 am in the Parentcraft Room, Level 2, Purple Zone. Women and their partners can attend for support from a member of the Infant Feeding Team in an informal relaxed environment. Refreshments are available. This clinic enables parents to speak to other mums who are breast feeding and is a fantastic opportunity for peer support. The Infant feeding team also support Breast feeding women on the delivery suite, the Postnatal ward 2E, Neonatal unit and the Paediatric wards and on discharge from hospital we phone all breast feeding mothers to offer advice and support and to signpost to further community support.

Early Years

Do books have a place in your child’s bedroom?...

CHILDREN AND BOOKS!

Y

products is to look for nursery items that have won awards from parenting magazines- they’ll have been tried and tested by experts and most importantly other parents!

It’s hard just now, but try and think about your baby becoming a toddler. Look out for furniture and storage that will still be useful once your beautiful baby becomes an enquiring toddler, and beyond. Choose classic designs and good quality that you’ll be pleased with 5 years on.

Once your baby is moving about independently, put books in easy reach of them. Babies need to see books’ front covers to find the one they want. There’s nothing sweeter than seeing your baby picking out and ‘reading’ a book by themselves. Try a front facing Tidy Books kids book box or Tidy Books children’s bookcase so that they can find what they want by themselves.

our nursery will be somewhere for baby to sleep, be changed, fed, and don’t forget, somewhere to listen to stories in! It is never too early to read to your baby. Babies love to look at bright pictures and hear the sound of your voice.

Ask! Get tips from friends who already have children. What’s the nursery item they still use and love? Start your baby’s home library in your nursery. Have a few books at home that are just right for babies. You can find great book ideas for babies from Bookstart.org.uk Include a comfy chair to read story together. Reading with your baby is a lovely way to spend time together and you’ll soon find that baby is reaching out to touch the book. Look for winners. The shortcut to finding good

Give books a special place in your home. By choosing to put your baby’s books in a Tidy Books Bookcase or Book Box, you are showing that books are important. You will be starting your baby on a lifelong journey into reading! Find out more about Tidy Books’ award winning bookcases for babies and toddlers, which will last your family 8 years or more, and encourage your child’s love of books from

www.tidy-books.co.uk Sign up for our free children’s book reviews and more in the Tidy Books newsletter

The Ultimate Fairytale Experience...

T

he Disney Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at Harrods is the ultimate immersive storytelling experience for young kids at the iconic British store in Knightsbridge, London. This is the first time that a Disney Parks and Resorts offering has been recreated in the UK. This enchanted retail experience invites children to step into the world of their fairy tale heroes and heroines for a magical transformation and a master-class in the qualities it takes to be a Princess or a Knight. Inspired by the famous “Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo” scene in the Disney animated Cinderella film, where Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother transforms her for the ball, the Disney Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at Harrods is set in a fairy tale castle enclosed within the glittering walls of Harrods. In the stately fitting room behind the large wooden castle doors, dazzling dresses and shimmering accessories are encased and within the boutique salon, ornate golden mirrors line the walls. From the moment a child steps into the world, imagination becomes reality. Children are hosted by their very own Fairy Godmother-in-Training to learn the qualities needed to become a Princess or Knight, take a royal oath and enjoy the ultimate magical experience. Perfect as a gift for children aged 3-12 or for a special celebration, there are a variety of experiences to choose from starting from as little as £50. The Disney Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at Harrods forms the centre piece of Disney at Harrods, bringing further Disney magic to the world famous department store with a brand new Disney Store at Harrods and new-look Disney Cafe.

Early Years ANNABEL KARMEL - COOKING WITH KIDS

ANNABEL KARMEL’s top tips for cooking with kids 1. What a Mess: Let’s face it; cooking with kids is never going to be mess free. Spending time in the kitchen with different smells, sights and textures should be a fun and memorable experience, so don’t worry about a bit of mess. Using a plastic table cloth can make clearing up a bit easier. 2. Get Equipped: Use equipment that won’t break easily; plastic bowls; wooden spoons; plastic cookie cutters and wooden rolling pins. Silicone cupcake moulds are good for baking small batches of cakes as well as making mini omelettes or jelly. My Mini Cupcake Set with Baking Tray is ideal for this. 3. Keep it Simple: Children (especially toddlers) have short attention spans, so start with recipes that are extra easy and provide a result reasonably quickly. 4. Food Hygiene: Ensure they wash their hands before they touch any ingredients and in between touching raw and cooked or ready-to-eat foods. 5. Squabble-free Fun: If you are cooking with

more than one child, give each of them their own job or spoon to stir. Whilst cooking is a great opportunity to teach them about sharing; giving them their own job not only helps teach them responsibility, but also helps avoid any squabbling! 6. Cooking Parties: occupy the kids this summer with a cooking party for your child. Choose some simple recipes such as mini pizzas, gingerbread men or cupcakes and let them work in pairs to make their own lunch or tea. From Mini Baking Sets, to Alphabet Cookie Cutters and Mini Popcake Kits, Annabel’s range provides hands-on cooking experience to feed children’s inquisitive minds. The brightly coloured cooking sets, ranging from £5-£15, are accompanied by Annabel’s favourite recipes and easy-to-follow cooking instructions. Suitable for children aged 3+ and available in select Tesco stores and Tesco Direct, they are ideal for fun summer learning.

Green’s - the home baking whizz - and crafty CBeebies favourite Mister Maker have put their heads together to create this fantastic cake kit. The kit contains everything your Mini Makers need to bake 12 cupcakes. And - even better - once the cakes are baked, kids will be kept busy making fun decorations with the ready to roll icing provided. A great chance to let their imaginations go crazy and experiment in true Mister Maker style! Visit www.greenscakes.co.uk/mister-maker for product information and fun activities.

Millie the Miracle Born 10 Weeks Early

Millie the

Miracle

Millie weighed just 3lbs 12oz and was taken straight away to SCBU.

M

MILLIE THE MIRACLE

illie was not breathing on her own and we found her surrounded by equipment and machines, with nurses and consultant’s all around her. I could feel myself getting more and more upset and worried by the minute. Millie ended up on a CPAP machine (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) to help her to breathe. She also had jaundice, so was placed under Phototherapy lights wearing a mask to protect her eyes. In addition, she had to have an NG tube placed through the nose, down into the stomach used for feeding and administering drugs. She was given a routine ultrasound head scan given to all preterm babies. We were taken into a private room and were told that Millie had Hydrocephalus. A watery fluid, known as CerebroSpinal Fluid (CSF). CSF is produced constantly inside each of the four ventricles of the brain, normally this flows through narrow pathways from one ventricle to the next, then out over the outside of the brain and down the spinal cord. Hydrocephalus is caused by the inability for CSF to drain away into the bloodstream. One of the Consultants came and explained Millie’s Hydrocephalus in more depth. The usual treatment is to insert a shunting device to control the pressure by draining excess CSF, therefore preventing the condition becoming worse. He was so nice, even drawing pictures and little diagrams to help us understand more. He explained that we had to wait and see whether Millie’s head got any bigger. Sometimes at the start it can settle down but if not Millie would need brain surgery to be fitted with a shunt. We dried our eyes, put on a brave face and went back to see Millie in her incubator. Day by day, Millie’s head was getting bigger. So the day came for her to be moved to NICU. She had continual testing of the fluid in her head to check the pressure. The drawing of fluid continued for about a week but was not working. Millie’s

head was still growing at a rapid rate, so we were informed that she would have to undergo her first surgery. So Millie was taken to surgery a few days later on the 22/04/10. We met the anaesthetist and surgeons before being led to a small room to sign the paperwork. Then we kissed Millie goodbye and good luck. I was in tears thinking I would never see my daughter again. About 2 and half hours went by. Millie arrived, her hair had been shaved on one side and she was hooked back up having to be monitored around the clock looking so fragile. 2 weeks later it was not good news, Millie’s head was still growing at a rapid rate despite the access device been fitted. So Millie was scheduled to have a VP shunt fitted. The Big day came, I couldn’t believe we were going to go through more surgery. But we knew it was to save her life. We just couldn’t help feeling that she was so small and had been through enough already. Tears were shed as we parted from her side. Four hours passed then we got a phone call from the ward to say Millie had made it and to come up. Jonny and I just hugged each other and thanked God that she had made it through. A few weeks later Millie was back in SCBU. Millie was finally sent home in the June. At this stage she was still tube feeding, supported by lots of medication and on special milk. It was the best feeling in the world to be taking her home but also very scary. Millie continued to have a care team of consultants, therapists and nurses. She is now a happy 4 year old. We have a blog that offers support and shares our experiences. Please pay a visit to

I Love You Natty: A sibling’s uplifting introduction to Down’s syndrome

N

Mia, who lives with her family near Truro, found it difficult to understand why her baby sister Natty had to spend time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Treliske Hospital, Truro, when she was born. Natty was born with Trisomy 21, commonly known as Down’s syndrome, which was accompanied by a heart condition. Her parents, Hayley and Bob, did not know that their new baby would have the condition before she was born, so the whole family went through a steep learning curve of what life would be like with a child with additional needs. Hayley writes award-winning and internationally renowned blog, Downs Side Up. When she discovered notes and poems around the house written by Mia to her little sister, she collected them, soon realising that they were the basis for a ground-breaking book. Mia writes, “I love you Natty and you are the best sister in the world and so precious to me. You are so important to me and if you weren’t in this world my life wouldn’t be the same.” Mia’s drawings and family photographs complete this beautiful first introduction to Trisomy 21,

Sis

terly Lo which has been ve endorsed by eight leading UK charities. Hayley said, “This is exactly the kind of book I searched for when Natty was born, to read with Mia at bedtime. I believe it will have a positive impact on new parents as well.” The book I Love You Natty is available from Amazon at £5.99 + P&P or to order via Waterstones. ISBN 978-0-9929251-0-9

Daddy & Me

Commando Dad Fit for Purpose:

How to fit training in around family life.

B

COMMANDO DAD - FIT FOR PURPOSE

efore I was a parent, I loved keeping fit and setting myself physical challenges, from marathons to triathlons and even endurance events for people who should know better, like The Tough Guy. However, when my troopers came along, I quickly realised that there was never going to be free time in my day that I could train in (or to do anything else for that matter). I recognised that I needed to get creative about how I could fit training in around my family commitments (which I have a lot of as a stay at home dad). It’s wasn’t always easy, but then nothing worth doing ever is. So dads, if you want to start, maintain or revisit a training routine, here’s my tips: Don’t believe the hype. People will tell you that it is impossible to train with a family and that there just isn’t enough time in the day. I once said this and got the response, “You have the same 24 hours a day that Einstein, Marie Curie and other world changers had”. Well that puts things into perspective. We are only talking about scheduling in training, gentlemen. You can do it. Make Sacrifices. Sacrifice everything that you do not know to be useful or believe to be productive uses of your time. If you cannot train because you need to schedule it in alongside playing on the Xbox, checking Facebook or tweeting for example, you need to re-evaluate your goals. Gain Home Support. Ideally, you need the full support of your partner, or if you are a single parent, the person/people who help you out with childcare. Not only for their help in looking after the troopers while you train, but also as a motivating force to help to stick to your schedule. This can be tricky as you will be training at times that may currently be considered time for you to spend together (especially if you are training for an event and your training time is increasing). If this is an issue for you, tackle it now. It is not going to go away. Here’s how I did it: - I explained to my wife why I really wanted to train and compete. - I worked to ensure she had as much ‘free’ time as I had training time. - I stuck it out and proved I was serious.

38 |

Choose your moments. Some training can only happen away from base camp. If this is the case, avoid busy times in the family day: i.e. mealtimes, bedtime etc. All hands need to be on deck then. So either get up early and create time at the start of the day (I prefer this) or be prepared to go out once the troopers are bunked down. Become more efficient at exercising. Create – or find – a fifteen minute routine that allows you to give yourself a total body workout. Fifteen minutes is the optimum amount of time because even a very young baby trooper will nap for 15 minutes. Do exercise that requires little – or no – kit: sit ups, press ups, skipping and squats are all fabulous exercises that you can perform in confined spaces at a moment’s notice. And that may be all you have. Get exercise kit you can use at home and be disciplined enough to use it. My indoor trainer for my bike was essential to my triathlon training – I would thrash it at every opportunity. Make it a family affair. Make your training a family activity as this will not only enable you to train during ‘normal’ hours but also to set a brilliant example for your troopers. Importantly, it gives your partner an opportunity to have time to themselves. For example: - Take the unit to the park, and when your partner joins you, start your laps. - Take the troopers out for a bike ride, then drop them back at base camp to your partner, and then get some serious miles in. - Take the unit swimming, and when your partner either joins you or collects the troopers, get some real lengths under your belt. - Invite your family to watch you compete. Hilarious pictures of me at The Tough Guy, in various stages of torment, have gained almost legendary status at our base camp. If you’ve got any other tips, please share them with me – and other dads – on the Commando Dad forums:
