A-Z Pregnancy of
lcohol – The Department of Health, National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (RCOG), all recommend that during pregnancy you should avoid alcohol all together as this is the safest option for your unborn baby. This is particularly the case during the first 3 months of pregnancy because of a risk of miscarriage. If you do opt to have a drink, you should stick to one or two units of alcohol (equivalent to a small glass of wine) once or twice a week. raxton Hicks – From around 33 weeks of pregnancy (sometimes earlier), you may become aware of your uterus tightening from time to time. These are ‘practice contractions’ also known as Braxton Hicks. They start as a painless tightening starting at the top of your uterine muscles spreading downwards causing your abdomen to become very hard. They usually last around 15-30 seconds. These contractions will be irregular and infrequent. If you notice more than 4 of these within the space of an hour, if you are in a lot of pain or notice any vaginal discharge, you should contact your midwife. olostrum – During pregnancy, your body is preparing to produce milk for your baby. Therefore your breasts may be tender and sometimes from as early as week 14 your nipples may begin leaking a substance called Colostrum (first milk). This is nothing to worry about, however if you do have any concerns you should contact your midwife. oula – A doula is a non-medical birth companion who supports women and their families during pregnancy, childbirth and early parenthood. A doula can assist and help a mother in many ways. The National Childbirth Trust (NCT) state that “Having a doula present when a child is being born shortens first-time labour by an average of 2 hours” (www.nct.org.uk). Anyone in the UK can hire a doula. Search online Doula Directories or speak to your Maternity Hospital.

pisiotomy – Occasionally, during labour a doctor or midwife may make a cut in a woman’s perineum (the area between the vagina and the anus) to allower a widening of the vagina opening and to enable the baby to be delivered more easily. In some women, the perineum can tear during childbirth and with either a tear or episiotomy you will probably require stitches to repair the area. Massaging the perineum during the last weeks of pregnancy has been shown to reduce the likelihood of a tear or needing an episiotomy. For details on how to perform a perineal massage visit www.nct.org. uk/pregnancy/perineal-massage. Mummy and Me recommend using ‘Down Below’ perineal massage oil by the Natural Birthing Company. olic Acid – The Department of Health recommends that women should take a daily supplement of 400 micrograms of folic acid while they are trying to conceive and continue this dose for at least the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Consult your GP for further advice, particularly if you are taking antiepileptic medication as you may require a higher dose. There are many foods which also contain folic acid including; brown rice, granary bread and green leafy vegetables. Taking folic acid is very important for the development of a health foetus and can significantly reduce the risk of neutral tube defects such as spina bifida. Mummy and Me encourage you to learn more at www.gofolic.org.uk ums – Some women get swollen or sore gums in pregnancy that may lead to bleeding. Dental care is free during pregnancy and for one year after, so ensure that you visit your Dentist regularly. Ask your GP for a Maternity Exemption Certificate for free dental care and if you are not currently registered with a Dentist, visit www.nhs.uk where you can search for your nearest service. eartburn – Many women experience heartburn during pregnancy. It is harmless, but can cause discomfort. Antacids can be used during pregnancy. Speak to your Midwife or GP for further advice.
Pregnancy tching – Because of the increased blood supply, mild itching is common during pregnancy. As the skin across your belly stretches, it is also quite normal to experiencing itching. Use Shea Butter or other moisturisers to avoid the area becoming dry. There are rare conditions such as Cholestasis (causing itching of hands and feet amongst other areas), if you have any concerns speak to your Midwife or GP. oints – During pregnancy, your body produces a hormone called ‘Relaxin’ which (as the name suggests) relaxes your body’s ligaments and joints. As things loosen, you may experience joint pain. Some women develop pelvic pain referred to as ‘Pregnancy-related Pelvic Girdle Pain (PPGP) or Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD). According the NHS, these pains affect up to one in five pregnancy women to some degree. Getting early diagnosis can help minimise pain and avoid long-term discomfort. icks – Most women are first aware of their baby’s movements from around 18-20 weeks of pregnancy, however as every baby and pregnancy is different it may be later on for you. Movements can be kicks, swooshes, flips or turns (Hiccups however are NOT classed as movements). The number of movements tends to increase until 32 weeks when they will plateau. There is no set number of kicks you should be feeling, what is important is that you know what is normal for your individual baby. If you notice and increase or decrease in your baby’s regular movement pattern you should contact your midwife. Mummy and Me are proud to support Count The Kicks as our Charity partner. Visit their website www.countthekicks.org.uk ibido – Although for some, pregnancy can be a time when they wish to refrain from sexual activity, a lot of women find that their sex drive during pregnancy increases. Your breasts are getting bigger, an increase of blood flow engorging your vulva makes you more sensitive and your glowing skin and lushious locks can mean you look good and feel great. Orgasms in pregnancy can also become more frequent or more intense. Later in pregnancy, sex (and particularly an orgasm) can set off contractions. It is perfectly safe to have sex during pregnancy as your partner’s penis cannot penetrate beyond your
vagina. However your midwife or GP will advise you to avoid sex if you’ve had any heavy bleeding. You should also avoid sex if your waters have broken as this can increase infection. For more information speak to your GP/midwife or visit www.nhs.uk or www.nct.org.uk aternity Leave – Statutory Maternity Leave is 52 weeks, made up of; 26 weeks ‘Ordinary Maternity Leave’ and 26 weeks ‘Additional Maternity Leave’. You don’t have to take 52 weeks, but you must take 2 weeks leave after your baby is born. The earliest you can start your leave is 11 weeks before your due date. However your leave will also start if your baby is born early or your have a pregnancy-related illness in the 4 weeks before birth. For further information on maternity leave, rights and pay visit www.gov. uk/maternity-pay-leave ausea and vomiting in pregnancy (NVP) is a common condition affecting approximately 70% of pregnant women. Remember to keep your fluid intake up to prevent dehydration. You can find more information at www.pregnancysicknesssupport. org.uk or speak to your GP or Midwife.

Pregnancy ptions – When it comes to where and how you give birth, it is important to remember that you have options. You may decide to give birth at home, in a midwife led unit, birth centre or delivery suite in hospital. You also have options for; who you would like present at the birth, what birthing positions you would like to try, what pain relief you would like to use and even options post delivery such as who will cut the umbilical cord. It is a good idea to explore your options by speaking to your midwife, taking a tour of your maternity hospital, speaking to your partner and reading up on things that particularly interest you. elvic Floor Exercises – Once you have found out you are pregnant, you should begin doing pelvic floor exercises as soon as possible as they will lower your risk of experiencing incontinence. You can practice pelvic floor exercises anywhere! To strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, sit comfortably and squeeze the muscles (as though you are pausing mid-urination). Try to do 3 sets of 8 squeezes a day. Visit www.nhs.uk for more information. Hello Baby Leaflet (SH1014):Hello Baby Leaflet 22/10/2014 11:34 Page 1

uitting Smoking – Stopping smoking will not only benefit your baby, but it will also benefit you. The NHS claim that in stopping smoking you will have less morning sickness, fewer complications in pregnancy, a reduction in the risk of stillbirth, a reduction in the risk of cot death and many other benefits. You can call the NHS Smoking Helpline on 0800 0224 332 or speak to your GP or midwife for advice. ecipes – With the list of foods you should avoid in pregnancy such as; raw eggs, caffeine, some soft/blue cheeses, pate etc. It’s reassuring to know that our regular columnist Annabel Karmel not only does fantastic toddler recipes, but you can find delicious Pregnancy Recipes at www.annabelkarmel.com iblings – Making siblings feel part of the process is the best way to ensure that they understand. Some parents choose to have siblings announce the pregnancy with a photo. Allow them to talk to ‘the bump’, perhaps let them help you pick items for their nursery, wardrobe or even their name (if you’re brave!). There are many books that you can read together and if you can, allow your children to meet small babies. Once the baby is born, many parents choose to have the new addition bring a gift for their older siblings too!

ravel – Travelling in the early and final stages of pregnancy can be tiring and uncomfortable, so many prefer to take holidays during mid-pregnancy. Although flying is not thought to be harmful to you or your baby, you should discuss any health issues with a health professional before booking your holiday. You also need to check with the airline for their policy on flying in pregnancy. After 28 weeks, the airline may ask for a letter from your GP or Midwife. You also need to be aware of Deep Vein Thrombosis if looking to travel over 5 hours. Make sure that you drink plenty of water, move about wherever possible and wear supportive stockings to reduce leg swelling. mbilical Cord – Studies have shown there are benefits of ‘delayed cord clamping’. This is where the umbilical cord is not clamped or cut until after it has ceased pulsating, allowing a normal, healthy blood supply for your baby’s transition to life outside the womb. While the cord is still
Pregnancy pulsating, your baby is receiving their placental supply of oxygen, nutrients and increased blood volume. Most health professionals use delayed cord clamping, however you may wish to feature it in your birth plan along with who you will like to cut the cord. For more information on delayed cord clamping research, visit www.cord-claming.com itamins – Alongside Folic Acid, the government recommend that pregnant women (and women who are breastfeeding) should take a 10microgram supplement of Vitamin D daily. Eating a healthy diet is important to ensure that you are getting the vitamins and minerals that you need too. If you are under the age of 18 or on income support, you may be eligible for the Healthy Start scheme - vouchers to use for vegetables and vitamins. For more information call 0845 607 6823 or visit www.healthystart.nhs.uk hooping Cough Vaccination – Young babies with whooping cough can be very unwell and in severe cases can die. Pregnant women can safely help to protect their baby by getting vaccinated against Whooping Cough, ideally between 28 and 32 weeks in pregnancy (although they may be given the vaccine up to 38 weeks). This is a highly effective protection and will pass to your baby through the placenta helping to protect them until they are routinely vaccinated against whooping cough themselves. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has found no evidence of risk to pregnancy or babies since the vaccine was introduced to pregnant women in October 2012. For further information and to book your vaccination, speak to your GP surgery. -rays – Radiation is often a concern for pregnant women. This can range from x-rays used for any injury to hand-held or whole body scanners at airports. Ultrasounds in pregnancy do not use ionizing radiation so are less of a health hazard. Ionising radiation is used in x-rays so you may be worried about the airport scanners. All technology deployed at airports has been assessed by government health and safety regulators who have concluded that there are no unacceptable risks to health. The radiation dose from these is very small. If you are concerned, you can request a body search at the airport as an alternative. Visit www.nct. org.uk/pregnancy/radiation-and-pregnancy or your airport website for more information.
oga – Keeping active in pregnancy makes the changes to your body and weight gain easier for you to adapt to. It can also help with labour itself and to get your figure back post-birth. There are some exercises that should be avoided during pregnancy and you should always consult your GP or midwife about any exercise regimes. Yoga, Pilates and Swimming are great ways to safely keep active during pregnancy. zzz – The National Sleep Foundation conducted a poll on Women and Sleep and report that 78% of women have more disturbed sleep during pregnancy. The change in hormone levels, discomfort, frequent urination and other factors do not help. The N.S.F state that “For most women, getting a full night’s sleep becomes even harder once the baby is born. It is very important for pregnant women to prioritize sleep and to find effective strategies for managing their sleep problems as early as possible in their pregnancy”. Sleep on your left side to improve the flow of blood and nutrients to your baby and to your uterus and kidneys. For more great tips visit www. sleepfoundation.org/sleep-topics/pregnancyand-sleep and speak to your Midwife.

Welcome Baby Thomas
I BABY FRANCIS paul’s BIRTH story
had a really good pregnancy and because of this, the choice to go for a home birth was an easy one. Even though this was my first baby I was confident everything would be fine and if not, hospital was a short drive away.
I'd prepared well, exercising and being healthy throughout, pilates every week and I attended hypnobirthing classes with my husband too. We had the birthing pool set up in the dining room ready from a couple of weeks before my due date. Michael had made a real effort to

MA make everything perfect, setting S up candles and fairy lights. My waters broke on the Friday evening (I was 40+1). I text my midwife to say I thought they'd broken and she advised she'd be on the phone if things started to progress, and if not, would come and assess me the following day. Later on that night my named midwife's colleague - Tammy - called me to check I was ok, my midwife, Leanne had been called to another birth. Nothing was happening so she arranged to come the next day. I spent all day Saturday bouncing around on my birthing ball, doing Pilates, stretching, dancing & walking. Tammy came and checked whether baby had engaged further into my pelvis compared to the afternoon before, baby had so the exercises were helping! Still no contractions though. I woke up about 1am Sunday to contractions, within half an hour I had to get up. I woke my husband Michael and went downstairs, put my Hypnobirthing music on, lit candles and fairy lights and got on the birthing ball. Tammy came about 3:30am, I had the Tens machine on by then, still on the ball with my music playing, concentrating on my hypnobirthing breathing. Michael got the pool filled and I got in. Eventually I got on the gas & air as the contractions ramped up. Michael was amazing and really encouraging. A second midwife arrived an hour later and they were both amazing. Encouraging me, telling me how well I was doing. I had no idea with it being my first, so their words really helped. They carried out obs on me and baby unobtrusively and remained quietly in the living room otherwise, ensuring Michael and I had the privacy and time we needed together to progress through the labour. I was aware of every stage and really

Birth & Beyond concentrated on my breathing techniques! Michael knew the baby was coming soon, I remember he just kept saying 'the baby's coming soon, keep going'. He was so excited and he had a few tears! The midwives started ramping up their activity, using a mirror under the water to check if they could see the baby coming every contraction.
as I enjoyed some skin to skin with Thomas and initiated breast feeding.
It was becoming real! And the pushing was really starting, my body was taking over, the contractions were so intense but stopped very abruptly each time too, they started coming closer together and I could really feel the baby coming. One really big surge of my body and the head was born, what an odd feeling having the head out just hanging there!
I do think the exercise, Pilates & Hypnobirthing all came together to really help me during pregnancy & the labour to ensure such a smooth & relaxing experience.
Thomas was born at 7:20am in the pool, after a 6 hours labour. We left his chord till it stopped pulsing then Michael did skin to skin with him whilst I gave birth to the placenta still in the pool (wow, that was a relief!).
Michael made bacon sandwiches and tea whilst the midwives did all the checks on Thomas. They left us at 11am and we all went to bed for a few hours sleep. It was so nice being at home.
We would love to share your birth story, email;

Life with Declan D
WORDS: Ana Gilmurray
eclan is 10. He loves to draw, read books, ride a scooter, ride a bike, play football, support Everton, go swimming, his ipad (how he loves his ipad!), he loves music (of all kinds but especially Gary Barlow and Take That). All perfectly normal for a boy his age. The difference is that Declan has Down Syndrome and the day he was born I had no idea what our futures held. What I now know, and wish I had known back then, is that he is more like my two older boys than anything else. The whole family are closer because of Declan and he has brought a lot of fun and laughter to my home. It has not always been easy, as he has ongoing medical issues and learning delay. He needed open heart surgery at 4 months old, but flew through that and it made a huge difference to his
well-being. He also has some minor issues that require trips to Alder Hey regularly. But we have had so much support from the medical teams, the early years team in his pre school years and then his school have been amazing all the way through. I reached out to my local support group, Down Syndrome Liverpool. Through them I have learned so much, met other parents in my situation and as a family, we are a part of a fabulously supportive community. I’d encourage others to reach out too. Declan is my boy, a brother, a nephew, a friend, a happy little boy. Once I realized he was my son above all else and that I loved him as much as my other two boys, joining this new community of Downs Syndrome was easier to accept. Declan is MY boy and I love him.

From my experience, Down Syndrome is not as big a deal as people initially think. People are scared of finding out the real facts and they shouldn’t get stuck in a time warp of thinking how people with Down Syndrome used to be and assuming that’s how it is these days. Early intervention, support, stimulation and attention ensures that people with Down Syndrome achieve anything they want to. SOCKS LOTS OF

t this time of year many of the common childhood illnesses raise their head and it seems to be a hot topic with our readers. So, Health Visitor Kirsty offers some guidance... While most one-off childhood illnesses are no longer as common as they were two decades ago, with fewer parents choosing to vaccinate, mumps, measles and rubella are on the increase once more. It is, however, important to vaccinate against these diseases as they carry the risk of serious, potentially fatal, complications. Chickenpox (Varicella zoster virus) is an itchy rash that first appears as small red bumps, usually on the scalp, face or trunk.

Passed on: By touching, coughing, sneezing. Chickenpox is most infectious from one to two days before the rash starts, until all the blisters have crusted over (usually five to six days after the start of the rash). Added risks: Pregnant women, newborn babies and adults with a weakened immune system. What can help: Baths, loose clothing and calamine lotion to relieve itching. Use paracetamol or ibruprofen to control fever. Drink plenty of fluids.

The ThermoScan® 7 ear thermometer Age Precision® is the first thermometer to feature Age Precision® technology – an age adjustable fever guidance system – which helps parents better understand their child’s fever. Many of us are unaware that the definition of fever changes with age, so what is normal for a toddler can be classed as a high fever in a newborn, making this innovative technology ideal for first-time parents.

became aware of Water babies whilst pregnant with my first child, as a couple of friends had mentioned that they took their little ones to classes. I picked up a Water Babies DVD at an NCT event and was amazed at how happy, natural and confident the babies looked in the water - so wanted to enjoy this with my own baby. I was delighted to learn that the swimming sessions ran in a range of venues right across the region and conveniently at a local primary school which was ideal for me and my new baby. I nervously booked the course to start in the September following my June due date. As a first time Mum at the time, I was concerned this may be too early as my baby would only be 12 weeks old. However, as all 3 of my girls are Water Babies swimmers, I can say that the earlier the baby starts, the more natural it is for them.

(Most recently, the local Water Babies branch celebrated their youngest swimmer at just 24 hours old!). Like most new Mums, my first lesson was nerve racking. I remember worrying about everything from how tricky it would be for us both to get ready, through to worrying about my post-baby wobbly bits, and of course how my baby would take to the water. Three Water babies on, I now (with help of a grandparent); get all THREE of my girls ready for their classes and we love every minute of our weekly sessions! My eldest daughter (Eden) has been swimming with Water Babies since she was 12 weeks old. Now aged 3, she can independently swim small distances, float on her back, dive in and generally feels super confident in the pool environment. Because the sessions are so enjoyable, Water Babies have a high retention rate. This means
Early Years that both Eden and my 2-year-old, Bethany, have been swimming with the same friends (and some new ones) since they were newborns. So for my children and myself, Water Babies has been a great social network too. Having loved the classes with Eden, when Bethany came along 16 months later, I was keen to start Bethany on a course as soon as possible, so she started at 4 weeks old and took to the lessons really well.
Of course Water Babies is about having fun, but a lot of the activities are designed to promote safety for your baby/toddler too. With exercises teaching how to ‘hold on’ if they fall into the water, how to turn themselves over and how to breathe correctly while swimming have brought peace of mind to bath-times and family swims.
My youngest daughter, Faye, started Water Babies at a few weeks old and like her big sisters she feels so comfortable in the water. In a hectic week, I really enjoy the bonding time I get with all 3 of my girls in their classes. The added bonus is that they are all exhausted after class so we get a peaceful night’s sleep. Splashes, Smiles, Enjoyment, Confidence, Safety…and a good night’s sleep! – what’s not to love about Water Babies? Classes are available across the North West visit:

In addition to swimming classes, Water Babies also offer underwater photo-shoots. The trained instructors make you feel so comfortable in the water and it is great to get some amazing shots that are great keepsakes from their time on the course. As my family has grown, it’s been lovely to see the underwater photo shoots grow too. Starting with a tiny Eden, through to our most recent shoot featuring all 3 of my girls with their fab instructor Lynn and myself.
Classes cover music, sensory development, sign language, baby massage & yoga. Sessions are currently available in Pendle & Skipton with more planned for the near future in surrounding areas.

WATER BABIES - AN EDITOR’S REVIEW
Water Babies are very accommodating and found me a convenient course that meant the girls classes were close together and with the same instructor – fabulous Lynn! Which amazingly they have continued to do now that I have THREE Water Babies. Thursdays are very tiring days for Mummy with three classes in the pool, but they are also very enjoyable. Seeing their excited faces as they enter the pool and how they get so much out of their lesson is a real joy!
to buy, I would highly recommend asking for Water Babies vouchers. These can be used against the lessons, photo-shoot or gift shop. Even if you can only manage to get to one or two courses whilst on maternity leave, you will both learn vital lifeskills. It is also an amazing bonding experience for you both and often Dads and Grandparents bring little ones to the class too.
Spanish singing, music & movement classes for babies and young children. Knowledge of Spanish is not required learn with your little one and you will be singing along in no time.

Early Years We recommend you use:
ISOFIX
An ISOFIX base attaches to the chassis of your car, via hidden anchor points, making the seat more secure with less chance for errors. They also come with a support leg to absorb impact. Make sure your car is compatible first, though.
REAR FACING
SIDE IMPACT PROTECTION
A rear-facing seat prevents a child’s head from being thrown forward in a collision. We recommend using a seat that faces backwards until your child is 4 years old, making them safer for longer.
Side-impact crashes result in higher fatalities and head injuries. To combat this, we strongly believe in side-impact protection. This is available on all of our car seats and most offer Superior Side-Impact Protection for greater impact absorption.
Playing it Safe:

hether it’s that terrifying first journey home, or those day trips out; your child needs a car seat that’s comfortable, adjustable, and above everything, safe. At Mamas & Papas, we pride ourselves on giving parents as much information as possible, to ensure they find the right seat for their little one. Working with Good Egg Safety, our Safer Seat campaign aims to highlight the dangers of poorly fitted car seats. Along with Car Seat Clinics and in-store demonstrations, we can help make this big decision even easier. Our Handy Checklist
You need to find a seat that’s right for your child, as well as your car. It’s also important to continue using it correctly as they grow. So here’s our simple checklist to help you on your way. Measure your child: Their height and weight are more important than their age. Research: Look carefully into different car seats. Try before you buy: We let you sit your child in a seat and try it in your vehicle before buying. Check you’re using it correctly: Read the instructions for a guide on your car type and child’s size. Switch off airbags: If your child is riding in the front or better still put them in the back. Know your seat inside out: You’ll find detailed videos and instructions on our website. Adjust as they grow: Adjust the harnesses and headrest every 6 months for the first 4 years, then annually from 4 to 12 years. Double check the anchor points: Should your seat come out be extra-careful putting it back. Don’t upgrade too soon: Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to know when the time is right. Stay in touch: We have friendly, trained staff ready to help you find the right car seat.

Baby Jogger City Mini Double - Editor’s Review
I
Words: Michelle Thompson - Magazine Founder & Director
absolutely love my Baby Jogger City Mini Double, it is ideal for my 6 month old and 2 year old. The spacious seats also mean that my 3 year old still ample room for her to be comfy on the odd occasion she uses it.
I looked at many double and tandem pushchairs when I was pregnant with my second child. I remember researching and also speaking to every parents I came across who owned one – all of whom said that they love it! The main features I love about the City Mini Double is the individual adjustment of each seat. For my newborn I could have the seat lying down flat with the canopy fully covering them, whilst my toddler can be sat upright, with the canopy back. Another great feature of the City Mini Double is the generous storage spaces. The basket is enormous and on a regular basis holds around 4 large grocery bags (or lots of Mummy and Me Magazines for a delivery!). There are also 2 pockets in the backs of the seats for additional storage.
The Baby Jogger City Mini Double are very lightweight but robust. Mine has covered miles! They are great for one handed steering and unlike other pushchairs I have tried, the Baby Jogger offer a smooth ride over curbs – great for sleeping babies! I recently got to test drive the City Mini Double GT model which I was really excited about. The main obvious difference is the handle. On the GT model the handlebar is adjustable to different heights and on the highest setting would be very suitable for taller parents. When you want to store or collapse the pushchair, this is simply done with one tug on straps in the center of each seat and the whole thing folds in half and clips together. If you’re expecting twins or have a small age gap, I would highly recommend a Baby Jogger City Mini Double. Whether that be the original or the GT model, they are both fantastic!

Annabel Karmel’s Perfect Purées
FIRST TASTES APPLE INGREDIENTS 2 sweet dessert apples (such as Pink Lady, Royal Gala or Jazz), peeled, cored and chopped 4 – 5 tbsp water or pure unsweetened apple juice METHOD 1. Put the apples into a heavy-based saucepan, along with the water or apple juice. 2. Cover, bring to the boil and simmer gently for 6 – 8 minutes, until really tender. Alternatively, steam the apples for 7 – 8 minutes. 3. Puree in a food processor or using a hand blender. If steaming, you could use some of the water from the bottom of the steamer to thin out the puree.

Make weaning fun for you and your baby with my first-food recipes. Start by mashing soft foods like avocado and sweet potato and add in a little formula or breast milk to ease the transition. Be sure to find a quiet spot and take it slowly, as your little one enters the world of solids.
FIRST TASTES - AVOCADO INGREDIENTS ½ small ripe avocado A little of your baby’s usual milk METHOD 1. Prepare the avocado. 2. Mash the flesh together with a little of your baby’s usual milk. NS MAKES 1 PORTIO NG ZI EE FR R FO LE AB SUIT

Here are some of my top tips on weaning – good luck! 1. Make sure your baby is ready to wean. Pushing a young, reluctant baby will make the start of the weaning process upsetting for you both. The general rule is that babies should be weaned from around six months old.
SWEET POTATO, CARROT AND APRICOT
2. When babies feed from the breast or a bottle they instinctively push their tongue forwards. Now your baby needs to learn to keep her tongue at the back of her mouth. If she can’t get on with a spoon, try dipping a clean finger in the puree and let her suck your finger for the first few mouthfuls.
INGREDIENTS 1 small sweet potato (about 250g), peeled and chopped 1 medium carrot (about 75g), peeled and sliced 30g dried apricots, chopped 350ml boiling water
3. It’s a good idea to choose a spot where you’ll be regularly feeding your baby, so that she begins to associate it with mealtimes. The kitchen is probably best, as she’s bound to make a considerable mess for the first few months – or even years!
METHOD 1. Put the sweet potato, carrot and apricots in a saucepan. 2. Pour over the boiling water and cover and cook for 20 minutes. 3. Drain, and puree using an electric hand blender.
4. Laugh, smile, sing and taste your baby’s food at mealtimes – she’ll want to join in the fun by copying you and eating it herself. 5. Avoid feeding your baby when she’s tired, irritable or very hungry. At these times, she’ll want one thing only – milk.

t is so exciting to be writing my first Mumpreneur column for Mummy and Me magazine especially as International Women’s Day is on 8th March. I hope that my columns will inspire you to realise your entrepreneurial flair and creativity. Over the months I will be looking at how we can harness the amazing creativity and tenacity of women. I bet many of you have had an idea for a product or service and thought, “wouldn’t it be great if….” This month I am going to touch on taking an idea “From in your head to in the shops”. That is exactly what I did when I took the plunge into the unknown leaving my legal career in 2007 to launch my travel product business and products which now sell around the world. I sometimes ask myself, if I had known how hard and gruelling it was going to be would I have been put off – I don’t think so as the satisfaction and pride you feel in seeing your products used and making a difference is hugely fulfilling and compelling! There are lots of things that I discuss with entrepreneurs when they are working on a new idea but here are some things to think about if you have a budding idea for a product or service:
1. Evaluate the idea Is there really a need? What is the product/service? Who are the customers? Why do they need it/is there already an alternative? Listen to your target audience – do you need to make some changes? For my first idea, for example, which was born out of my need as a mother, I discussed the concept with leading midwives and held focus groups of possible users of the item.
2. Protect your idea. Confidentiality – take care discussing it. Patent – is there an inventive step which can be protected. Design – protect the look and shape if possible. Trademark the distinctive name
3. The Reality. Designers – do you really need one? How are you going to produce the idea – manufacturing is a whole topic on its own and there are pitfalls
solvejbiddle
to avoid! Testing – making sure your idea is safe and fit for purpose. Quality control – it only takes one defective product or badly provided service to damage your reputation Ask yourself, what do you want from the idea? Are you planning to build a brand? Will there be an extensive enough market to build a profitable business? For me, I had other concepts in my mind having travelled extensively as a mother and observing other travelling parents and I felt there was enough to warrant leaving my career. How will taking this product/service to market fit round your life? It is very time and mentally consuming to make a reality of an idea. Do you have the support network? Sometimes being an entrepreneur can be quite lonely. You also need to think about finance. There are some interesting options but all take some thought. All this said, never be afraid to ask for help and advice. I entered an entirely new area of knowledge and generally when asked (begged!) often enough, most people were very willing to share their knowledge. One key piece of advice I would give to anyone wanting to start or build a business is: Know and be honest about when you don’t know – there are others out there to help. Of course once you have something to show, the next thing is to get others to understand and buy into the product and service and this takes PR and marketing - you can have the best product/service in the world but if no one knows about it then there is no market! The good news is that there is a lot you can do yourself without spending huge amounts of money. Be brave and take the plunge! I will be here every step of the way. If you have any specific questions or areas of interest which you would like me to cover, please do contact me via the email below and I will include some responses each month. ©Solvej Biddle February 2015

In total throughout the year he was given 3 ‘Gold’ awards, 11 ‘Silver’ and 20 ‘Bronze’ awards in its monthly competitions. The accumulative score he achieved as a result put him in contention and ultimately led to him winning, as a result of having had the highest scores overall within the newborn category throughout the year.
Rob also obtained his accreditation as ‘Craftsman in the Guild of Newborn and Baby Photographers’, and is the first and only male to achieve craftsmanship in this sector; further cementing his credibility as a leading professional within the highly specialised genre of newborn photography.
Of the Photographer of the Year title, Rob Mank said: “I am absolutely thrilled to have been given this award, especially in light of the extremely high standard of competition that my photography was up against”.
Following what was a career-defining evening at the Guild’s awards, he continued: “To be the first and only male craftsman in newborn photography and the first male to win Newborn Photographer of the Year is a huge honour. I am so proud. I am also delighted to be able to prove that you don’t have to be female to competently handle, settle and take beautiful images of newborn babies, and I hope that I can be an inspiration to other men working in this industry.”
Lesley Thirsk, Director of the Guild, said: “I am both proud and delighted that Rob has achieved this recognition. The Guild has very demanding standards when judging photographic

FIT FOR FATHERHOOD Mummy and me – Deployment Day Plan Rule No.1 – “Don’t become INVISiBLE!”
I
n 1970, on a warm summers evening in July, my dad dropped my mum, who was in labour with me and my twin brother, off at the hospital and asked her to call him when she felt ready to cope with visitors. There didn’t seem anything unusual in that to either mum or dad, that was just how things were done. When their wives were in labour, men went off to work, or sat in the waiting room with flowers like in a Carry On film. Oh how times have changed. I couldn’t wait for the birth of my children. I read the books, attended the ante-natal classes and got to know the midwife. I was convinced that if my wife went into labour unexpectedly I would be able to deliver my son (tying off the placenta with a clean shoelace – I looked it up). Luckily, my emergency delivery plans never saw the light of day as we made it to the hospital in plenty of time. I was right by my wife’s side throughout, offering what comfort and support I could. And words cannot explain the feeling of finally holding my brand new baby trooper in my arms. It is an amazing experience, as any dad will tell you. But then something really strange happened after the birth. Without any warning, I disappeared. I became completely invisible to doctors, nurses and the midwife. I think my wife could see me, but I was finding it hard to get to the side of her bed to double check. So perhaps I didn’t physically disappear (although that would make a good story) but it certainly felt like it. And that’s when I first realised that it’s very, very easy to become sidelined as a new dad. And not only in the delivery room, but beyond it too. The vast majority of advice, support and care is geared towards mum. Don’t get me wrong, parents need all the advice, support and care that it is possible to give them, but dads are parents too. And we have a crucial role to play, right from the minute we welcome
our trooper into the world. We need to provide physical support, such as taking on night feeds, keeping the house squared away, buying supplies, getting meals on the table, washing clothes and generally keeping on top of everything. But most importantly, we need to make sure that our partner has everything she physically needs, from time to take a bath to healthy food. We also need to provide emotional support, essential to keeping morale high. Sometimes, our partners can feel as if life has become all about the baby trooper. Reassure her and let her know you’re in this together. Having a new baby is tiring for everyone, but your wife and trooper have been through labour too. Tempers can get frayed in the beginning when you’re both adjusting to a completely new lifestyle on limited sleep. Keep calm. And our trooper needs us too. Don’t believe that we aren’t biologically programmed to be good carers. We may not have the ‘maternal instinct’ but I can assure you that the minute my troopers were born, my wife and I both had a huge instinct to love, protect and care for them. We got the ‘parental instinct’. And in terms of physically caring for a baby, we can do everything but breastfeed. It might not seem like it at the time (well it certainly didn’t for me) but with practical experience, you will easily master the basics. But of course it doesn’t end there. Even after ten years as a stay at home dad, I still consider myself a Commando Dad in training. It is worth the effort. To a trooper, their dad has many roles, often falling somewhere between Hero, Role Model and Protector. When you become a dad you step into those shoes and you owe it to yourself – and your troopers – to be the best dad you can be. So don’t let yourself get sidelined, dads. You are simply too important.

Easter Crafting
with Little Ones
I
t’s amazing what you can turn a paper cup into. Depending on what colour cups you have to hand (or whether you fancy getting the paints out), you can turn a paper cup into an Easter chick or the Easter Bunny. Fill the cup with their favourite treats on Easter morning as an added bit of fun! A really inexpensive Easter craft is Spoon decorating. Wooden spoons can be purchased cheaply at any home store and can be turned into Easter chicks using stick on eyes
and feathers. Once decorated, they make great puppets for an Easter show too! We absolutely love crafts that involve using your child’s handprint. Not only is it an individual craft, but it is a beautiful keepsake to treasure. This Easter, use some black paint to create some handprints. Once dry, add some cotton wool balls and detailing to create your very own Spring lambs. They are adorable and your little ones will love making them! Visit ivillage for some more great Easter crafts and activities.
