I
am thrilled that Mummy and Me Magazine is celebrating its 3rd birthday. When I first came up with the idea to produce this lle e h ic M Editor publication (back in November 2012), I wasn’t sure where to begin. I was on maternity leave from a law firm at the time and my eldest daughter Eden was just 5 months old. As a new Mum, I felt that there was a gap in the market for a publication catering for expectant parents and those with young children. There were great family magazines and national baby ones. But nothing that provided everything I had wanted and needed. So I set about producing one myself! I’m really lucky to have a supportive family and to know some fantastic people who helped make Mummy and Me possible. After coming up with the idea, I researched my market. Having a baby, I was already involved in many baby related activities, ily m a F so spent time speaking to these Fabulous companies about. I came up with the name and asked Ilan Sheady, an artist friend of mine, to produce a logo and mock cover. Having this really helped to have a ‘visual’ to show baby businesses when getting the ball rolling (since I didn’t actually have a physical magazine to show them at that point). My brother had just completed a journalism degree so showed me the basics in designing a publication, I loved learning how to design the magazine as I’d really enjoyed a

semester of Graphic Design as part of my Universitydegree and I love being creative. I utilised everyone I knew for help! I made lots of contacts, I was a complete novice but wanted to make sure everything was carried out professionally. One of the main factors for setting up my own business was my daughter Eden, she had become ‘my world’ from the moment I held her in my arms and I couldn’t bear the thought of leaving her to return to the 9 to 5. My husband and I had also decided that we would like to try for a second baby too. I submitted the letter to my employer with my request for Part Time hours and figured I could try to build up the magazine alongside my regular job until it took off.
Mu mm y a nd M
A month later, I found out I was pregnant an Mu mmy again. So after much deliberation, in April 2013 I nervously headed to my ‘return to work’ meeting with my employer armed with 3 things; a letter saying I wouldn’t be returning to work after maternity leave, the first issue of Mummy and Me Magazine, and a 12 week ultrasound scan image of my daughter, Bethany. It was a tough decision to make (particularly financially), but although it was daunting, the thought of a job I could fit around my children was idyllic. The past 3 years have been a complete learning curve and have also been a rollercoaster ride. But in those 3 years, Mummy and Me has become a multi-award winning title covering the North West of England. Many readers don’t see the Mumpreneur behind the mag. But behind the scenes is a hard working Mummy (to THREE beautiful girls now). I’m often asked how I get

everything done, sometimes I don’t quite know myself. But I couldn’t do it without the support of my family (particularly my husband Lee) and my fabulous friends. I work around (and often with) my children. All under school age, I take them with me to meetings and industry shows (or as my three year old calls them “magazine Baby shows”). Many of nursery industry company owners know them well and spoil them with gifts which is lovely. I think one of the nice things about being a working Mummy in the nursery/family industry is that there are lots of other work-from-home Mummies too, who understand if your child is a bit noisy in the background of a call or if a reply to an email is sent in the middle of the night whilst nursing your baby. Things can get crazy having young children and producing a magazine. Particularly as I sell adverts, do design work, write articles, update the website, post on social media and even do some of the magazine deliveries! But I love my job and I love

that I still get to take my little ones to playgroups and have fun in my main job - being a Mum! I have a job that I enjoy and that helps other parents (I hope).

SUMMER

ou can’t build a house without strong foundations and you can’t build your make-up without taking care of the skin underneath. As we head into the Summer months, you need to keep your skin hydrated. Investing in a good moisturiser and particularly one with an SPF will keep your skin safe and help keep you looking radiant. This added to the celebrated ‘pregnancy glow’ many women feel from their second trimester, can leave you feeling at your best. When it reaches bedtime, try to remember to remove your make-up or generally wash your face before heading to bed. This will freshen your skin and should help keep any breakouts at bay or at least help to minimise them. You may also wish to adopt a ‘cleanse, tone and moisturise’ routine before bed too. It’s easier said than done when you’re getting up to pee every hour or waking for night feeds, but getting a good night’s sleep can really help you look and feel healthier. Back in 2010, the British Medical Journal published a report ‘Are you feeling OK?’ about people’s perception of twenty-three healthy
adults photographed after an eight hour sleep and again after a night of sleep deprivation. Results (following presentation of the images to sixty five untrained observers) indicated that the images taken after sleep deprivation depicted people looking less healthy, less attractive and more tired. So grab an afternoon nap or an early night whenever you can! The skin of a healthy sleeper is more elastic, supple and taut. If you’re prone to breakouts, in moderation, the sun can help with acne. Whilst acne.org reports that the sun will not get rid of acne all together. They do state that “10-20 minutes per day of sun exposure for people with lighter skin and 20-30 minutes per day for people with darker skin may prove beneficial for acne symptoms, especially body acne. However, overly exposing your skin to the sun creates skin damage, which leaves the skin irritated.” A blemish balm (BB cream) is a lighter alternative to foundation which will keep your face hydrated. Bronzers are a great way to give your face that summer glow and appearance of a healthy complexion.
Save the ‘smokey eye’ look for winter, this season try a lighter shadow on your eyes that will compliment your

uring pregnancy it is advisable to eat well, take pregnancy vitamins, avoid alcohol consumption, omit smoking and have an exercise regime. Your GP or midwife will be happy to discuss this with you. However, having a ‘happy, healthy, home’ for baby can even be helped by how you stand and how you breathe. Whether it is part of your pregnancy exercise regime (i.e. in pilates or yoga), or simply in preparation for the big day, practicing breathing techniques can have huge benefits. Breathing can help you use the diaphragm, abdominal and pelvic floor muscles more effectively – all play a huge part in the ‘pushing’ process of labour. As you breathe out, your diaphragm lifts upwards and this allows you to gently draw in the abdominals without putting extra pressure on your pelvic floor. Breathing in this way can also help release tension and help produce feelings

of relaxation. Women who use this deliberate focus on breathing (through pursed lips), find it helps them cope better with birth contractions. Many women find hypnobirthing relaxation and breathing techniques very effective and in some cases allowing you to avoid use of drugs in labour by simply staying in control of your body through breathing. For information on hypnobirthing, visit www.hypnobirthing.co.uk Breathing is also aided by correct posture. As you gain weight in pregnancy and tiredness kicks in, it can be easy to ‘slouch’. Correct posture is essential to help your body to cope well with the changed occurring in pregnancy. If you’re standing, try to have your feet hip-width apart to distribute your weight evenly. Relax your shoulders and lift up through your spine to create extra space around your ribs. Good posture both when standing and seated can help to avoid discomfort from baby’s feet as they grow.

The Beauty of
Baby Bonding Breastfeeding
&
W
We explore why skin-to-skin has so many benefits for you and your baby and how skin-to-skin can aid breast-feeding.
hether you’re planning to breast-feed or not, having ‘skin-to-skin’ contact with your baby has many benefits. For this reason, many women choose to feature it in their birth plans and many midwives bring a baby straight up onto the Mother’s chest the moment they are born. Skin-to-skin bonding with your baby (also called Kangaroo Care) is a natural way for you to bond, can bring your baby to a stable skin temperature, stabilise their heart rate and blood pressure and provide a sense of calm. It’s not just about Mummy either, your Partner and any siblings can also have skin-to-skin bonding time with the new addition. There is plenty of research into the benefits of skinto-skin contact with your baby, particularly after birth. Unicef report that
“babies who have spent an hour in skin contact are significantly less stressed after the birth experience this means that their breathing and heart rate are more stable, they cry less, and when they start to feed, they digest their food better”. Spending skin-to-skin time after birth can also encourage breast-feeding (for a start your baby can smell the milk and is comforted that they can find food there). Reporting on finds from the ‘Anderson Review’, Unicef state: “Statistically significant and positive effects of early skin-to-skin contact were found in relation to breastfeeding incidence at one to three months of age, breastfeeding duration, maintenance of infant temperature

in the neutral thermal range, infant blood glucose, infant crying and summary scores of maternal affection during an observed breast-feed within the first few days of the baby’s life”. Breast-feeding can be rewarding, but a lot of women also find it very challenging at times too. From nervousness feeding in public through to sore nipples, breast-feeding can certainly seem very daunting, but stick with it and you will soon benefit from the many
Birth & Beyond advantages it can bring. Whilst pregnant, it’s a good idea to make contact with your local children’s centre. Many centres now offer antenatal breast-feeding sessions to provide support and advice in the run up to your birth and breast-feeding journey. Take your time! Don’t expect things to work for you and your baby straight away. Remember that this is a whole new experience for your baby and you! Ensuring that your baby is always latched on correctly is vitally important as this will help prevent sore nipples for you and will avoid your baby taking in too much air whilst feeding which can lead to your baby having discomfort from trapped wind. All newborns feed at different rates and for different periods of time. Some babies will feed for 45 minutes or more, whilst others (particularly in summer months) will feed for 10 minutes simply to ‘quench a thirst’. Support cushions can come in very useful as your baby gets heavier and if you’re feeding in the night. Once your baby moves into their own room, you may want to invest in a comfy nursing chair too. If you delivered by section, it is a good idea to ask your partner to pass the baby to you for feeds or to make sure that you don’t have to lean uncomfortably to pick up your baby to nurse. As your baby gets older, they will become quicker at feeding and will cut down their feeding to around 10 minutes at a time. Hold your baby close and facing your breast and allow your nipple to rest on your their nose. When their mouth opens really wide (wait for your baby to really widen their mouth) and allow their head to tilt backwards. Once latched on, your baby should have their chin up against your breast and ensure that their nose is clear to breathe. If you baby has a blocked nose, they may be inclined to come off the breast to feed. Try to ensure that they are correctly latched each time to avoid any discomfort. If you find feeding painful, to release the suction, slide your little finger into their mouth to gently ease them away and then you can try to get your baby to latch more comfortably. Your baby normally will come off the breast when they have finished feeding. However, you may find your baby uses your breast for comfort to fall asleep or when they are unwell. Again, if you wish to unlatch your baby, use this technique. It doesn’t matter what shape or size you are, your breasts are designed to feed your baby. Through pregnancy the hormone progesterone makes the areola swell (often causing that ‘tingling’ feeling). Inside your breast
clusters of cells called ‘Lobes’ produce the milk which flows to the ducts. Any length of time you decide to breastfeed for is invaluable to your baby. Before your breast-milk kicks in, your body produces a thicker substance called colostrum which provides natural antibodies to help your baby fight infection. This is often more difficult to express, so if you are planning on using a breast-pump, don’t worry if you can’t see much being produced. Your breast-milk is tailormade to meet the needs of your baby and will provide a variety of different tastes for your baby which can often help reduce allergies and make them less fussy with foods when weaning. Breast-feeding allows you time to bond with your baby. If the hustle and bustle of visitors is becoming tiring, it can be nice to sit and feed your baby in a quiet space to relax. As your baby becomes more alert it is likely that they will touch your face, clothes, jewelry and hair whilst feeding. Perhaps their reassurance of knowing you are there!? Daddy can be involved too, providing the support you need, taking care of your baby for bathing or changing to give you some time to rest and by making sure Mum feeds and drinks well too!

BABY
Your Baby’s Skin Understanding
Delicate
We explore baby’s skin - from common conditions at birth, to skin allergies and rashes.
Y
our baby’s skin is something discussed even before birth, deciding to have your baby’s skin to your own has some many benefits. Having skin-to-skin contact with your newborn baby helps regulate their breathing and body temperature, reduces your risk of postnatal depression, strengthens your bond with baby and can help with the production of breastmilk and initiating breastfeeding. Once your baby is born, you will spend most of your time noticing every little detail about them; their hair, their eye colour, who they look like, their tiny hands and feet, and their skin. After cord clamping has taken place, your baby will have a small plastic clip while the remaining umbilical cord dries and eventually falls off. While this is still attached to your baby (which is usually around a week or so after birth), you will need to keep your baby’s navel dry and clean. Any noticeable bleeding or discharge should be examined by your visiting health professional or GP. At bathtime, use a damp cotton wool ball to gently clean around the area. In the womb, your baby is covered with a white sticky substance called Vernic which is a natural moisturizer and protection against infection at birth. Some babies are born with a thicker layer than others depending on the birth process. Babies who are overdue may have drier and sometimes cracked skin as the protective vernix has been absorbed in the womb. Over the first month (and longer in the case of premature babies), the skin matures. It is important that you do not use any harsh chemicals and care for your baby as naturally as possible, even avoiding any creams and lotions in the early weeks if possible.

Around % of newborns will develop
Depending on the circumstances of birth, your newborn baby may have some swelling, bruises, cuts of even bloodshot eyes. These may have been caused through the pushing process at birth, or through use of assistance in birth i.e. a Ventouse (vacuum assisted extraction) or Forceps (large spoon like tongs that are used to help guide a baby out of the birth canal). These marks disappear with time.
Milia
They may also have other types of ‘birth marks’ such as Strawberry marks which are red and slightly raised areas that should disappear in time and ‘Stork Marks’ which are pink/red V-shaped markings on the forehead and upper eyelids and nape of the neck. At birth, your baby will be examined, but should you have any concerns it is important that you speak to your health care professional. At birth, the skin is very thin and fragile. Examining your newborn, you may also notice tiny spots particularly around the face. Around 50% of newborns will develop Milia, these are white spots on their face which are simply blocked pores and will clear within their first month.

In the early days, a baby can also develop jaundice making their skin and whites of their eyes look a bit yellow. Health professionals are normally quick to pick up on jaundice, however if you have concerns you should have your baby checked as soon as possible.

Across the top of your baby’s forehead and scalp, you may notice yellowing, scaly patches. This is called Cradle Cap and is a common condition. In time and with gentle washing at bath time, the scaly skin will flake away. If the symptoms prolong, then you may wish to invest in a cradle cap brush and cradle cap oil to assist with the removal.

here are some skin conditions that you baby may develop which are based on allergies or irritation. These include; Nappy Rash, Miliria (sweat rash) and Urticaria (hives). Nappy rash is often caused through your baby spending a period of time sat in a wet or dirty nappy. The nappy area become irritated and develops a red rash, which can sometimes break the skin. Nappy rash can also be caused as a result of infection. Keeping the area clean and dry along with use of a barrier cream can help avoid nappy rash. You should also monitor the diet and clothing of your baby. Some babies develop nappy rash due to reactions to things in contact with their skin, for example; disposable nappies or washing powder used on cloth nappies. You may also find nappy rash appears after you baby has been exposed to new foods or those they have an intolerance to. This is also the case in Urticara (hives). Hives are raised, red and itchy blotches on the skin. They are caused by a substance called histamine which releases into the skin following an allergy. The most common causes are foods such as egg and milk. But sometimes other foods
can be the cause. Usually the rash doesn’t last long and can be controlled with antihistamines. If you have any concerns regarding potential allergies, you should consult your GP. For free advice on fighting allergies and intolerances, you can also contact Allergy UK. You can find information by calling their Allergy Helpline 01322 619 898 or by visiting www. allergyuk.org Eczema is a more long-term condition often triggered by allergies. The most common form of eczema is Aptopic Eczema which affects babies and children and continue through to adulthood. Eczema has various extremes and should be examined by your GP for treatment suited to its severity. It often starts in young babies as a red, itchy rash on the face, scalp and body. Toddlers and older children who have eczema tend to develop the rash in folds of skin i.e. around the elbows or knees. Additional help and information can be found at www.eczema.org

Birth & Beyond
Luckily, there is fantastic support available to help. If you end up staying in hospital, a midwife may ask if you would like your baby to be given their first bath. They should then show you the safest way to do this. If you would like to have a go before your baby arrives, you can book onto a ‘Newborn Know-how’ session which is usually run by a local Surestart Children’s Centre or NCT group. Here, you will learn practical skills for parenting that will become very useful when you have to deal with ‘the real thing’. It is advisable to look for these sessions as early as possible to ensure that you can get a place. Firstly, you need to prepare the bath water. Bath temperature is a really important thing to be aware of when running your baby’s bath. 36degrees is what you should aim for. If you have a bath thermometer then you can check the temperature with this. Alternatively use the inside of your wrist. Remember, what feels cool to you, can feel warm to your baby. You should also make sure you have everything you need at hand. When bathing your newborn, wrap them in a warm towel with their head uncovered. With their head in the fold of your arm and your hand under their bottom lower them over the water. At this stage, they will not be submerged, instead simply cup your hand and scoop water over the head gently. For the first couple of weeks (at least) it is advisable to simply bathe your baby in warm water with little or no products. This is while your baby’s skin adapts to life outside the womb. Once you have bathed their head, gently unwrap the towel and careful lower your baby into the water continuing to provide support with your arm. Most babies will cry when getting bathed and it may take them several baths to become used
to these surroundings. Others, take to baths well and soon enjoy kicking their legs and thrashing their arms about. Gently splash water on your baby or use a soft baby sponge to wash their skin. Although their clamped cord may look painful, it is completely harmless. However, care should be given to this area to avoid discomfort. This also applies when drying as you will need to gently dab the area. Once your baby is washed, careful lift them out of the bath onto a warm dry towel and wrap them to keep them warm. Dry them softly and put on their nappy. You may also like to include a baby massage as part of your routine. To avoid disappointment, it is wise to check your local sessions whilst pregnant as often waiting lists can be long. Baby massage has numerous benefits and as part of your bath-time routine it can bring calmness to your baby and strengthen your bond.

This issue, our Dental Health Expert, Tripthi, takes us through your Child’s Teeth Development from Birth to Primary School age. As a General Dental Practitioner, I come across mothers wanting to get as much advice for the care of their babies teeth. So I thought this would be a good platform to share my experience and advice for the care of their little tiny pegs! Although baby teeth are temporary, they play a vital role as they reserve space for their permanent counterparts. They give the face its normal appearance. They aid in the development of clear speech. They help attain good nutrition (missing or decayed teeth make it difficult to chew causing children to reject foods). This helps to give a healthy start to the permanent teeth.

? Question: I’ve heard of babies born with teeth, is this possible?
a Answer:
Normally babies are not born with teeth. However, at birth the crowns of the 20 “baby” or primary teeth are almost completely formed, and they are hidden from view in an infant’s jawbones. However, there are babies born with teeth. Natal teeth are teeth that are present above the gum line (have already erupted) at birth, and neonatal teeth are teeth that emerge through the gingiva during the first month of life (the neonatal period). Normally, no treatment is advised as the teeth was not well formed with no root and hence are very wobbly. Sometimes, removal of these teeth is advised if they are caused problems in feeding or if causing damage to baby’s tongue. The incidence of neonatal teeth varies considerably, between 1:700 and 1:30,000 depending on the type of study.
? Question: At what age should my baby have all his teeth?
a Answer:
The primary teeth gradually erupt through the gums during the first 2 years of life. The first teeth begin to break through the gums at about 6 months of age. Usually, the first two teeth to erupt are the two bottom central incisors (the two bottom front teeth). Next, the top four front teeth emerge. After that, other teeth slowly begin to fill in, usually in pairs -- one each side of the upper or lower jaw -- until all 20 teeth (10 in the upper jaw and 10 in the lower jaw) have come in by the time the child is 2 ½ to 3 years old. The complete set of primary teeth is in the mouth from the age of 2 ½ to 3 years of age to 6 to 7 years of age.

? Question: Is it as important to look after baby teeth, when they will fall out eventually?
a Answer: Primary teeth may be temporary, but they deserve to be treasured as long as they last. A child needs strong, healthy primary teeth not only to chew food easily, but to pronounce words properly. This first set of teeth also holds a place in the jaw for the permanent teeth, which move into place as the primary teeth are shed. Primary teeth should be kept clean and healthy so that a child can remain free of cavities and oral pain. Infection from decayed primary teeth can damage the permanent teeth developing under them.
? Question: How often will my baby be teething?

a Answer:
A general rule of thumb is that for every 6 months of life, approximately 4 teeth will erupt. Girls generally precede boys in tooth eruption. Lower teeth usually erupt before upper teeth Teeth in both jaws usually erupt in pairs -- one on the right and one on the left. Primary teeth are smaller in size and whiter in colour than the permanent teeth that will follow. By the time a child is 2 to 3 years of age , all primary teeth should have erupted. Shortly after age 4, the jaw and facial bones of the child begin to grow, creating spaces between the primary teeth. This is a perfectly natural growth process that provides the necessary space for the larger permanent teeth to emerge.

Parents and other care-givers may not realise that primary teeth are susceptible to decay as soon as they appear in the mouth. Tooth decay in infants and toddlers sometimes is called early childhood caries, baby bottle tooth decay or nursing mouth syndrome or rampant caries. This condition can destroy teeth. It occurs when a child’s teeth are exposed frequently to sugary liquids for long periods.

Tips for Travelling with Tots

Top Essentials For a Baby-Friendly Holiday We can often get bogged down trying to ensure we have all essential baby items at hand when on holiday. But what do you really need and what can you live without? Experts in luxury baby-friendly holidays, Tots To Travel, reveal their top five ‘must-have’ items for a stress-free holiday with baby.
1 3
Blackout blinds Creating the right sleep environment can make the difference between a good night’s sleep and a bad one. With light evenings will the room be dark enough? Before you book your holiday check that there are sufficient blinds, shutters or curtains to block out the light come baby’s bedtime. You don’t want to find yourself trying to attach bin bags to your windows! Or consider packing a travel black-out blind. Non slip bath mat Bath-time is part of many babies bedtime routine at home and on holiday. As mums ourselves we’ve experienced the near impossible task of trying to bath baby without a non-slip mat. This is an item you could pack in your suitcase. It’s much better that it’s there for you when you arrive, so ask if one is provided before you book.
5
Children’s books, indoor and outdoor toys Gathering up your little ones favourite toys and books can take up a significant amount of packing space but are a must-have. It’s best to book somewhere that is geared up for families. Ask if they provide baby toys and books, leaving you room for that new bikini or two!
2
L if e ’ s a b e a c h ...
Pool Barrier This is something you can’t pack in your suitcase! If you’re staying somewhere with a pool and your little-one is on the move, this is a must have for safety and peace of mind. The alternative is that you spend most of the holiday on edge keeping little-one away from the pool. Check before you book that the pool is enclosed by a fence, hard cover or net.
4
Baby blender If you’re in the early stages of weaning then it’s likely that some form of blender will be your new best friend. If you’re staying at a hotel ask if they’re happy to blend food for your baby. If you’re self-catering then ask if they provide a blender or masher. Without this it could make meal times very tricky.
When booking a Tots To Travel holiday, all the above items are ready and waiting for you when you arrive, at no extra cost. This includes an Essential Kit Guarantee of over twenty items from blackout blinds and blenders to barried-ed pools and baby monitors. For more information visit:

their care quite enthralling, it is a joy to see their delight from being with and helping with the animals. On the little farm the pigs are always excited about their food; the ducks and chickens enjoy being let out, the baby rabbits and baby mice in the all-weather house love meeting the children and the pony looks forward to handfuls of freshly pulled grass.
There are 9 cottages in private extensive gardens with wide open play spaces. The heated outdoor seasonal swimming pool has a baby splash pool, the play room has lots of toys for young children. The games room provides for the older children, while the library has books and games for all ages. There is free wifi in the library and in most of the cottages. Ceremony By Wojcik Words: Sonia Ackland-Snow Managing Director of Ceremony Ltd UK agent for Wojcik Fashion Group
S
ince first appearing in Mummy and Me Magazine a lot has changed for us both as a brand and as a family.
What is the history of the brand? Our brands are Wojcik (pronounced Voy-cheek), and Ceremony By Wojcik. The brand was established in 1987 by Mrs Illona Wojcik hence the company name Wojcik Fashion Group. The beautiful collection starts from 3-6 months and offers clothing for up to 12 years in age. All the clothing is designed and manufactured in Poland to the highest quality. Our clothing is the best and anyone who has one of our pieces will know how our garments wash well and retain their quality.
we gained a lot of independent stockists which was great! Many of these are across the North West region making our brand more accessible for Mummy and Me readers. We realise Rome wasn’t built in a day, but we are very happy with the stockists who have chosen to stock our brand. For details of your local stockists or to purchase online, visit our website www.ceremonywojcik.com And what has changed for your family? I am happily to report that I am about to expect our third baby within the next few weeks. At the same time, I am relocating our flagship store nearer to home which will be based in Windsor/ Ascot, Berkshire.
So what has changed with the brand?
What next for Ceremony by Wojcik?
Last September, I became the sole Managing Director of Ceremony Ltd here in the UK. My children are my inspiration and the support of my husband James and Mother Halina has been amazing. I know that in the Children’s clothing industry there are a lot of Mother / Daughter teams, Family run businesses. You can clearly see that passion.
Our next plan is to re-develop our website with better in-depth images to show the quality and detail of our clothing collections. I will also be opening an Instagram account as this seems to be the way forwards. In June , we will all be off to the headquarters in Poland to view Spring/ Summer 2016 collections .
Back in February, the brand successfully participated at the Bubble Trade Fair in London, we showcased a few collections for AW2015. It was also a great opportunity to meet the lovely Michelle from Mummy and Me with her three beautiful princesses. I was so amazed at the amount of Mothers who were hands on and working within the children’s industry. The exposure at Bubble was superb for us and
How can we find out more? To view our current Spring/ Summer collections, please visit our website www.ceremonywojcik.com There you can also download our full catalogue for Wojcik and Ceremony collections. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for special offers.

ter Sister Sis
P
imp my Stroller came about after sisters Hana Laws and Melanie Sramek-Bennett hit on a groovy upcycling project for their youngest kids aged two and three. Where did the business idea come from? As avid followers of Gok Wan and Dawn O’Porter’s ‘don’t chuck, restyle it’ philosophy they transformed some toy strollers by making brand new covers. Friends and family loved them and started spreading the word so they set about sourcing more vintage and unusual fabric for a range of stylish, fun toy strollers for boys and girls to enjoy.
Toy strollers with a pinch more ooh la la Check out our hip, hand made collection for kids with style...
Find / Follow / Share
What were your background prior to setting up the business? Hana’s background is in the financial services industry in the City of London so she became the business head. As a Graphic Designer and Art Director Melanie is the creative eye. Between them they had all the skills needed to set up the business as part of their busy family and working lives. Both love ‘hand made’ - so each stroller cover is completely unique. They were taught to sew by their Mum, who, inspired by her father, made all the bed linen, curtains and soft furnishings for his Brighton B&B. It’s not officially a family trade, but there is an inherited love of making that both are very proud of. How do you manage the work-life balance? As working mums there had not been much time for sisterly fun, but Pimp My Stroller has changed that. Talking daily on stroller matters has given the sisters’ relationship a new lease of life and injected the business with a lot of heart and soul.
great gift idea!

ome birth is something that has gained increasing popularity and for many good reasons. However, for our son’s birth, we were extremely lucky to be at the hospital or it is my firm belief that he would not be with us today. Before our eldest son was born, my wife and I both did all the ‘right’ things. We attended childbirth classes through NCT, wrote a birth plan, packed the hospital bag, took a tour of the maternity unit, my wife took vitamins, ate healthily and did pregnancy yoga. Yet none of this prepared us for the moment the plan went out of the window. Throughout the pregnancy everything progressed as expected with no cause for concern. At ten days passed the due date, the baby was not moving as much so we were advised to go into hospital for induction. We were there for a good long wait, sustained mainly by magazines and jelly babies, until the drugs kicked in and labour began. Once he’d started to emerge, the staff were happy everything was progressing normally...until it wasn’t. And then they hit the big red button on the wall... The midwives words of “we’re about to sound an alarm, don’t panic” did nothing to reassure me and neither did to sound of bells ringing or the number of doctors and nurses that ran into the room. The baby had Shoulder Dystocia which can happen even in completely normal pregnancies without any earlier signs of it being likely. After delivery of the baby’s head, the shoulders get ‘stuck’ in the pelvis. It happens in 0.58 - 0.70% of vaginal births - a small risk of happening, but had we not been in hospital. The most common procedure is the
McRoberts’ manoeuvre - the mother draws up her legs against her abdomen then posterolateral pressure is applied with traction on the fetal head. This is the most effective procedure with a 90% success rate and thankfully it worked for us. Had we been at home though, would there have been a professional who knew how to help? Now it could be argued that even though it was their ‘nightmare’ scenario, the midwife could have performed this maneuver. However, shortly after he was born is became quickly apparent that our baby had suffered from the compression of the umbilical cord within the birth canal. Once born, babies are given a score out of ten, called an APGAR score which essentially measures their health at birth. Anything over seven is normal and anything below 3 is critical. Our baby’s score was 2 and I will never forget the sign of my blue, limp baby being rushed out of the room to be resuscitated and given oxygen. Being in hospital they had everything they needed to bring him round and ensure he was unharmed. Five years later, we now have two gorgeous children. Had we not been in hospital, with the fantastic staff and resources, I have no doubt in my mind he wouldn’t be with us today. Had we been at home, it may have all been very different. There might only be a 1 in 100 chance of this happening, but I feel that being in hospital meant he is with us today. So I would encourage you to discuss all options with your midwife and ask about situations like this should you decide to opt for a homebirth.

Creative Learning
Outdoor Learning & Foraging Foods Rather than provide you with crafts this issue, we decided we would encourage you to head outdoors and explore your surroundings for some creative inspiration. You may decide to; collect some shells on the seashore, makes some leaf or bark rubbings, count creepy crawlies, get your wellies on for some muddy puddle fun, blow some dandelion clocks, make a daisy chain or any of the many fun things you can do exploring your surroundings including Foraging...

he idea of wild food identification may seem overwhelming to some, but it need not be so. There’s no need to be able to identify everything straight away, choose a few examples of what grows locally, and learn how to ID them and their lookalikes. With the advent of forest schools and a greater appreciation for nature and its mental and physical health benefits for children, foraging is a truly interactive way to appreciate the natural world around us. There is nothing more simple to put you in touch with your environment than learning about it so you can feed yourself from it. Once you appreciate what nature provides us with, the more you respect it. A few of my spring favourites are emerging now, including the tips of the humble Nettle (Urtica dioica) beating spinach for
nutrition, and makes an excellent soup, or used in place of spinach in any recipe.
As a general rule of thumb it is unwise to try anything new if you are pregnant in case of any adverse effects on you or your baby. This applies even more so to wild food, some of which may contain chemical compounds that are fine when not pregnant but harmful if you are i.e. some pine needles can induce miscarriage in animals, some plants stimulate milk flow, numerous herbal remedies and pharmaceutical medicines are not recommended during pregnancy.
Another easy to identify plant is garlic mustard or hedge garlic (Alliaria petiolata) with a mild garlicky taste its a great addition to salads or used as greens in cooking. Wild garlic (Allium Ursinum) must get a mention of course, so versatile, there really is no need to buy any shop bought onion or garlic from March to June. A slightly more unusual suggestion would be the much maligned Japanese Knotweed. This invasive species is actually a tasty substitute to rhubarb, it also makes a great wine. Do make sure your patch has not been spray with pesticides, and harvest only the first 6-12 of shoots, taking care not to spread it to other areas.
