Being a busy Mum means producing a publication brings its challenges and this issue has been no exception. I have; battled all 4 of my children coming down with the dreaded Chicken Pox, been packing for an forthcoming house & office move, and been struggling with the fatigue and nausea of early pregnancy - that’s right! This Mumpreneur is expecting Baby Number 5 (due August 2017). So it’s great to finally be here with this fabulous Spring issue! Spring has to be my favourite time of year. Sure, I love the Summer Sunshine (when we see it) and the joys of Christmas. But there’s something about Spring that gives everyone the feeling of a ‘fresh start’. Whether that be a Spring clean of your home, the announcement of a new addition or perhaps taking up a new hobby? In Winter we often feel like simply hibernating, the freshness of Spring seems to bring the energy to enable us to do more. Whether you’re a regular reader or this is the first issue you have ever read, I do hope you enjoy this issue of Mummy and Me Magazine and I look forward to bringing you a Sizzling Summer issue in a couple of months time!

Sensory Experiences
Pregnancy
B
from Womb to World
eing a baby means facing new experiences daily. All of which are the foundations of learning to do all the things we take for granted as a grown adult. As a parent, one of the most effective ways you can aid your baby in their development is to help encourage sensory play. Sensory experiences happen for your baby even before birth. At only three weeks gestation (when your baby is the size of a tiny bean) the first sense has begun - touch. As your baby grows, the uterus provides the security your baby needs (like a big cuddle). The warmth of the uterus also plays a huge part. When you are in the second trimester, your baby’s sense of sound is developing and some Mums like to talk, sing or play music to their baby. Some of the sounds your baby hears from within your womb will amaze you. You may find that they recognise voices or that they are not bothered by familiar loud noises. Inside your womb, your baby hears the gushing waves of amniotic fluid and your heartbeat. These noises (or similar sounds such as shushing) can prove to be soothing post birth. At around 26 weeks gestation, your baby will begin to open their eyes and at around the sixth month they are sensitive to light in the womb. At this early stage, prior to their birth, your baby is experiencing the sense of sight. The sense of movement begins to function at five months gestation. By birth, this sense is relatively advanced but will only reach full maturity in adolescence. By the last trimester, the sensory system is quite well developed in order for your baby to be able to deal with the outside world. Although the senses begin to develop in the womb, it is only when the baby is born that they are put to the test. As a parent, it is
4|
WWW.MUMMYANDMEMAGAZINE.CO.UK
your role to help your child explore the world around them and sensory stimulation is a fantastic way to do this. At birth, the sense of sight is the least developed. You may notice how your newborn becomes attracted to lights and then contrasts of colour. The development of sight happens rapidly and this becomes more and more apparent as your baby begins to recognise faces and objects. Sound is carried by airwaves which are then picked up and registered by receptors in the inner ear. Determining the direction of sound is something that a baby picks up on quite quickly. You will notice how your baby moves their head when they hear your voice. One of the first senses your baby will learn and arguably the most important (particularly in those early days) is that of touch. Skin is the body’s largest organ and your baby’s skin is so fragile. The sense of touch plays a significant role in the mood of a baby, their intelligence and ultimately their survival. Your baby will learn to turn to feed in response to touch and skin-to-skin with your baby can help regulate their temperature and can calm baby when distressed. The sense of movement is again something learnt when your baby is developing in your womb. Receptors in the inner ear sense changes of body position. If this does not function well then we may feel nauseous or dizzy. To help this sense develop, you can ensure that your baby is not always lying flat on their back. You can try ‘tummy time’ instead. The world around a baby is rich in sensory experiences and your role as their parent is to help them to learn through using them. Sensory experiences can start from day 1 and in the comfort of your own home.

Giving Birth...Your Way!
owards the end of pregnancy, the ‘birth’ part can become increasingly daunting and deciding how you would like to give birth brings many decisions. In this issue, we look at just a few of the options available to you.
Creating a Birth Plan is a great way of ensuring that health professionals know how you would ideally like the birth to go. Of course, babies can have their own input on the day and ultimately a safe delivery for both Mother and Baby is what is important. But often preparation is the key to success and therefore planning and preparing for how you would like the birth to be will make you far more likely to achieve it!
Home Birth
For women with low risk pregnancies, a Home Birth can be an option. However, for low risk women having their first baby, a home birth is slightly less safe than a hospital birth. Once you’ve booked to have a home birth with the NHS, you will usually be looked after by community midwives who cover your local area. Alternatively this may be an option discussed through a private midwifery company. Pain relief options are still available i.e. gas and air, tens machine etc. Often the environment itself has a calming influence on women and women who have had a successful home birth report how they enjoyed being able to have their own home environment to relax in and their own bed to sleep in post-labour. If your midwife has any concerns, you will be transferred to hospital by ambulance.

Water Birth
Water Births are becoming increasingly popular, with many hospitals now having birthing pools and private companies offering them for hire in Home Births. Birth Pools offer ample room for a woman to feel comfortable and for their partner to also be in the water should they desire. Many women use water during their labour to help them cope with pain. Even sitting in water in your bath at home when in early labour may help keep you relaxed and at home longer. A survey by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) stated that around 30% of women giving birth in England plan to use water or a birth pool for coping with pain. Being in warm water can help your muscles to relax, which can reduce pain and speed up labour. Staying in the water to actually give birth is not as common, the survey continues to highlight that only 6% of women gave birth in a birth pool. As the water supports your weight, it can make you more comfortable. It can also help maintain an upright position which is beneficial for labour. Some women feel it is a more gentle transition for the baby going from the amniotic fluid of the womb into a birth pool and in some cases (not all) it may also be less likely to tear your perineum. A water birth is not suitable for everyone. Women who require close monitoring for medical reasons may not be able to in a birth pool. Discuss your desires with your midwife to ensure that you are suited for this type of birth and that the birth unit of your choice is set up for you to have a pool birth. And if you plan to have a Home Birth then you will have to hire out or buy your own inflatable birth pool.
Hypnobirth The word ‘Hypnobirth’ may conjure up all sorts of images in your mind, but although the name may suggest something rather ‘out there’ or ‘hippy’, it is purely a form of deep relaxation and breathing techniques allowing you to have a more positive birth experience. Hypnobirthing has been the best kept secret until more recently when allegedly celebrities and royalty are using this amazing practice. Hypnobirthing is based on the belief that a women’s body is perfectly designed to give birth. Aiming to free women from the fear and tension that surrounds childbirth and enabling the pelvic muscles to relax.
Cheshire Baby Hypnobirthing is a unique and bespoke birth preparation workshop, designed to help you feel more calm and confident in your pregnancy and labour so that you can look forward to the birth of your baby with the excitement and the enthusiasm it deserves!
At Cheshire Baby Hypnobirthing, you are able to take time out of your busy life to reflect on the amazing job you’re doing growing this tiny little human, you will also have a clear understanding of the birth process and you will feel more positive about your birth.

Pregnancy
Giving Birth...Your Way!
Medicated Birth
It is natural to have concerns over how you will cope with pain in labour, whether this is your first pregnancy or your have experienced labour before (as each birth is different).
Many women are aware of Epidurals (a type of local anaethetic that numbs the nerves administered through a needle into your back), but there are other options available, and some women opt to refrain from medication for as long as possible or altogether; using hynobirthing, a birth pool, aromatherapy, massage, reflexology, acupuncture and other methods to work through each contraction. Whatever your decision, it is advisable to find out the pain relief options available to you and what side effects they may have for you and your baby, so you can make an informed decision to document in your birth plan. Entonox (Gas and Air) is arguably one of the most commonly used in labour. You breathe in the gas and air through a mask/mouth piece. The gas can take around 20 seconds to work and is breathed in as a contraction begins. There are no harmful side effects for you or the baby, but it can make you feel light-headed and in some cases women have felt sleepy or sickly. You can stop using it at any time and other pain relief is still an option. A Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) machine - these can be purchased or you can hire machines through some hospitals, pharmacies and private services. The NHS website documents that TENS “has been shown to be effective during the active phase of labour” (when contractions get longer, stronger and more frequent). It is particularly effective for women who experience lower back pain and can be used at home in the early stages of labour. Electrodes are tapes onto your back connected to a batterypowered stimulator, safe and small amounts of current travel through the electrodes to stimulate
your body to produce more of its own natural painkillers ‘endorphins’ and reduced the number of pain signals sent to the brain by the spinal cord. At present there are no known side effects for you or baby when using a TENS machine. An intramuscular injection (into the muscle in your thigh or buttock) is another form of pain relief - drugs such as Pethidine or Diamorphine. These drugs begin to work about 20 minutes after the injection and last for up to 4 hours. With these drugs there are side effects that you should consider as they may make aspects of labour and post birth more challenging. The use of intramuscular injections can make some women feel sick. If it hasn’t worn off by the end of labour you may find it difficult to push. Pethidine/ Diamorphine can also affect your baby’s breathing. Early mentioned, an Epidural is also an option. As an Anaesthetist is the only person who can give an epidural, this is not a pain relief available for those opting to have a home birth. For most women, an epidural gives complete pain relief offering support to women in long painful labour or becoming distressed. However, an epidural is not always 100% effective in labour and there are a number of side effects to be aware of including; legs feeling heavy, feeling sick or drowsy, difficulty passing urine, sore back days later and headaches. Epidurals can also prolong the second stage of labour so you can no longer feel your contractions and your midwife will have to tell you when to push. This may also lead to the need for an instrumental delivery (with forceps or ventouse to assist delivery of your baby’s head). Finally, medicated births can make your baby sleepy and therefore interfere with their first feeds, particularly challenging if you plan to breastfeed so should be something you take into consideration. It is best to discuss your options with your midwife and include your preferences in your birth plan. You can also read more and watch an informative video at www.nhs.uk searching ‘Pain Relief in Labour’

Returning to work post-baby
I
t seems that almost as soon as you are getting into a routine with your baby that maternity leave comes to an end and you have to consider childcare options for when you return to work!
(always check with your employer that the premises are suitable). Seeing your colleagues and being in the workplace prior to your return date can make the concept less daunting. Most of all, cherish every moment that you are on maternity leave and the fun and enjoyment you have together doesn’t need to end there, enjoy the time you are together and allow your baby to amaze you as they learn and grow!
If you’re not fortunate enough to have relatives who are able to look after your little darling, then there are a lot of decisions to make; Do you go part-time? Can you work from home? Should you change your job altogether? Can you and your partner share childcare? What nurseries are good? Are there any good childminders in your area? Take your time! Don’t rush into a decision. Do some research, find out what nursery or childminder friends send their children to. Speak to the childcarers in your area, visit nurseries or homes of childminders and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Consider what has been important to you as a Mum and see if you can find childcare that can continue this. For example, if you have taken your child to playgroups you may wish to find a childminder who will also take them to playgroups. Don’t be hard on yourself when the time comes. Most women find themselves in tears on more than one occasion before the ‘big day’. It’s not uncommon for Mums to get emotional on the job too (and for breastfeeding Mums, don’t forget to put in those breastpads as any mention of your baby can start not just your emotions but also your milk production going!). Before the ‘big day’, make sure you’re not a stranger to your work. Your colleagues who chipped in for the baby shower collection will be delighted to see your little one if you pop by

tatistics show that nearly half of all mothers ‘leak’ and over a third of women are affected by a tummy gap after giving birth. A further 25% have pelvic girdle pain. Another generation of childbearing women should not suffer these terrible consequences when so many of the symptoms are controllable, improvable and even surmountable given the right treatment, exercises and advice. What’s not normal after birth? - It’s not normal to leak when you cough or run. - It’s not normal to have pain during sex. - It’s not normal to have ongoing pelvic pain or debilitating constipation. - It's not normal to have a gap in your tummy muscles

So many women suffer in silence and assume it is the new state of motherhood because no one talks about it. Many think it’s normal to leak a bit and pad up, or even resign themselves to not run or dance again and avoid exercising or trampolining. What is a Mummy MOT? A Mummy MOT is a specialist postnatal check for mums following delivery (vaginally or by C-section). In France, postnatal check-ups and pelvic rehab sessions are standard for every new mum. The MOT assesses how women’s internal organs, pelvic floor and stomach muscles are recovering after birth. And if they’re not, then the patient is provided with exercises and
Pelvic
Floor Exercises
Your pelvic floor supports your bladder, bowel, and uterus (womb), and gives you control over when you empty your bladder and bowel. Having a weak pelvic floor makes it harder for you to squeeze the muscles and sphincters at the bottom of your bladder to prevent wee from escaping. To strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, sit comfortably and squeeze the muscles 10 to 15 times in a row. Do not hold your breath or tighten your stomach, buttock or thigh muscles at the same time. When you get used to doing pelvic floor exercises, you can try holding each squeeze for a few seconds.

treatment to help that recovery. It’s recommended mums have an initial check-up after 6 weeks, but we also treat women who’ve had babies years ago that have a tummy gap or related pelvic issues. The Physiotherapy Centre can help you. Specific exercises can help strengthen the pelvic floor and there are also several specialist products that we recommend, such as EVB Sport Shorts and Elvie’s pelvic floor exercise tracker. We also stock these and sell them at the clinic. Each issue we will be putting YOUR questions to our panel of experts.
E
This issue - Midwife Rae on baby’s ‘newborn testing’
very parent wants their child to be healthy and as health professionals we do as much as we can to give you that reassurance.
This process begins in pregnancy when we offer you blood tests and scans that screen for normality and abnormality. Once your baby is born further screening is offered to ensure you have a healthy infant and if any problems are picked up that they receive early treatment and the best possible care.
When is my baby first tested?
One of the first screening tests you will be offered is the Newborn Examination. This takes place within the first 72 hours of your baby’s life. When your baby is born the midwife will do a preliminary check to see if your baby appears generally well but the Newborn Examination is more in depth and checks your baby from head to toe. You will be invited to accompany your baby for the examination, which will take place either in the hospital or in some cases at your home. The examination is conducted by a midwife, neonatal nurse or doctor who have all had the same training and passed the same course to receive the specific qualification needed to undertake the screening.
What is involved with newborn testing? They will ask you questions about family history such as if anyone has had problems with their heart, hips, eyesight or any other inherited conditions present in the family. If you are unsure ask your relatives in advance so you are prepared as this information is incredibly valuable in making sure any issues are picked up quickly and treated appropriately. The practitioner will check your baby’s head by measuring and feeling it, they will look in their eyes with an ophthalmoscope, listen to your baby’s heart and lungs with a stethoscope, inspect their ears, mouth, hands, feet and spine, they will check your baby’s genitals to ensure
14 |
WWW.MUMMYANDMEMAGAZINE.CO.UK
they look correct and in particular for little boys that their testes have descended to the right place, they will also check your baby’s hips by rotating them slightly to make sure they are in the sockets and not dislocated.
Is there anything I will need to know for the testing to take place?
Be prepared that most babies will cry a little during the examination, this doesn’t mean they are in any pain they just don’t like the fact they have been undressed and disturbed! It is important that you realise not every problem can be picked up at this first examination but the practitioner will tell you if at this stage they are detecting anything of concern. The examination is repeated at 6-8 weeks as some things may not be apparent during the first 72 hours. Most parents will however gain a good level of assurance that all is well once these examinations have been performed and that their baby is well and healthy, which is the news we all want to receive. Further information can be found at

Big Fun This Spring!
n an age of computers and tablets, it is still reassuring to see how many children enjoy being active outdoors with many owning bikes, scooters and other outdoor toys. Although outdoor toys can be particularly enjoyed in Spring and Summer months, they can be used all year round making them great investments!
12 months and 5 years, this is an ideal sized playhouse that makes a wonderful addition to our garden. Having the optional extra of the playhouse floor was great as it allows my children to enjoy this playhouse all year round. We have even added carpet in the playhouse which the flooring has enabled us to do. It has a real cosy feel. The playhouse is excellent quality timber and is very affordable too!
With Birthdays, Christenings and other occasions throughout the year, often buying gifts for children/grandchildren can be a challenge and particularly because children will ask for one thing and quickly move onto the next. Therefore buying a special gift that will last years and bring an endless amount of enjoyment is a perfect solution - and what better gift than a playhouse?
I would definitely recommend Big Game Hunters who have been extremely easy to deal with and efficient with delivery.”
Michelle from Mummy and Me Magazine celebrated her daughter Faye’s 2nd birthday with a surprise playhouse from Big Game Hunters. The playhouse was the Redwood Lodge with floor. Here’s what she had to say;
From giant garden games and teepees, to climbing frames and playhouses - Big Game Hunters offer so much fun for all the family to enjoy this Spring! You can find Big Game Hunters on Amazon or by visiting their website directly

“We were absolutely delighted when the Redwood Lodge Playhouse arrived (and so quickly too!). It was easy to assemble and took less than an hour to build, with pieces labelled and easy instructions to follow. The quirky crooked features of this playhouse add an enchanted feel and this truly is a playhouse that sparks imagination. My children have enjoyed using the playhouse as a; shop, house, fairy cottage, den, reading corner, hiding place, for picnics and many other games. With 4 children aged between

Twin Mumpreneurs Elderflower & Delilah
win sisters Selina and Samantha (AKA Elderflower & Delilah) found themselves in a place of inspiration during their maternity leaves which resulted in the creation of an innovative 3-in-1 garment known as Feed®; a maternity top, accessible breastfeeding garment, baby car seat/carrier/universal buggy sun/ windshield cover + SPF 50 sun protection.
Selina McEntyre, tells her story…. “Like many breastfeeding Mums, I felt I was forced to re-jig my wardrobe with clothes that screamed practicality over style - overnight I had become ‘mumsy-fied’. In a desperate need to have something that met my need to feed with ease and comfort whilst not compromising my style, I busily sat on the floor and cut out a design from a sheet of fabric. And it was this moment of inspiration that born Feed®. It hasn’t been an easy journey developing a product for market, I soon felt out of my depth. So it was a natural development to team up with my twin sister, who gave me the confidence to see the
product come to life.
With inspiration from Sam’s Bondi Beach lifestyle, the range offers safety in the sun with an SPF factor 50 sun protective and breathable fabric. The development of the 3-in-1 use came from the feedback from the first wave of customers, mummies sharing images of their Feed® garments as maternity and sun/windshields on their babycarriers and buggies. “ As twins themselves, Elderflower & Delilah are delighted that Feed® enables the discreet feeding of tandem fed babies under the cleverly designed batwing sleeves. Mums of twins and multiples have shared their delight in having a garment that makes the task of feeding two out and about so much easier. Now, as a mother of two, Selina works from home and enjoys the benefits of her business fitting around her children. Already Feed® has been awarded Mumsnet Best Award and BizzieBaby Awards – rated for it’s luxurious fabric and multi uses.

always wanted to do something like this for myself, but always procrastinated because I was comfortable in my full time job.
In November 2015 I found out I was going to be a father. This obviously changed my life. In March 2016 I went to an industry trade show Printwear & Promotion. As I had a totally new frame of mind, the first company I spotted was selling beautiful, super cute teddies that were designed to have a personal message embroidered on their tummies. I immediately signed up and bought my first batch of teddies. I created a logo and a Facebook page and ran a low budget advert to get page likes. Straight away, people were getting in touch to place orders so I knew there was a market. Over the next few weeks I’ll be adding
a range of complimentary beanbags. So, for example, people can order an embroidered Pug teddy and a matching beanbag. I have access to a large laser cutter that can easily cut shapes out of wood and acrylic sheets. I am currently working on designs to create stunning display boxes for the teddies. I will also be supplying 3D model puzzles for the older children. Ranging from safari animals to Star Wars craft, dinosaurs to dolls houses, the sky’s the limit! To be honest it is a struggle to balance my work life and personal life. I don’t work normal hours in my full time job. Sometimes on the road at 6am and not returning until 6pm. Then working on my second job. Even though Alfie’s mum and I aren’t together, we get on fantastically well and I can go and see him whenever I can. On the rare occasions I finish before 5pm I go and spend time with him. I am really enjoying fatherhood. Alfie is the inspiration for me to break free from spending hours on the motorway with the hope of being able to work full time from home one day.

No longer will you be governed by the standard milestones and capacity limits! Radian 5 has a 5 point harness to 25kg. Plus with a unique steel frame, exclusive fold mechanism and industry leading Lifetime Warranty, it is the complete all-in-one package - true back seat magic. All-in-one car seat Based on our bestselling US convertible car seat, Radian 5 provides ultimate protection with extended rear facing capacity and longer 5 point harness use when forward facing. Suitable from birth to 25kg rear facing and 9-25kg forward facing, Radian 5 gives you the option to choose what’s right for you and your family at a time to suit you. With a higher weight capacity, Radian 5 is the only seat which is suitable from birth, offers extended rear facing and converts to a forward facing car seat with a 5 point harness to 25kg. The unique steel frame means Radian 5 is super strong to resist crash forces and offer the most amount of protection. Metal reinforcements and the best EPP foam combine to provide the ultimate side impact protection, whilst the straight side walls ensure your child stays contained in the seat during a crash. The narrow design takes up less space in the back because it’s not necessary to have thick plastic sidewalls. For some larger cars this means 3 car seats can be installed in the vehicle.
“When our son Lewis outgrew his Group 0 Baby carseat, he was still very young and it was important to us that we found a good quality carseat which would allow him to be rear facing for as long as possible. The Diono Radian 5 was the perfect solution! It was straight forward to install in our car and is extremely spacious which is perfect for our very tall toddler. The straps adjust easily giving peace of mind and also enabling quick adjustment for different clothing and even when I occasionally give my niece a ride to nursery. As Lewis is still young, he often falls asleep in his carseat. The added support cushions enable him to have total comfort while travelling. As Lewis gets bigger, it is reassuring to know that the Diono Radian 5 will grow and adapt to suit our needs without having the expense of further carseats and the stylish design and full steel frame of this model means it will last. Another fantastic feature of this model is that it is foldable and comes with the option of a travel bag, giving peace of mind that you can have the same safety standards when travelling abroad as you can take the Radian 5 with you!” Danielle Furber - Mummy to Lewis (18 months) Reviewing for Mummy and Me Magazine WWW.MUMMYANDMEMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Down Syndrome Awareness Week 20-26th March 2017
Molly’s Story Words: Gareth Kenwright
olly Anne Kenwright was born 14/11/11 with Trisomy 21 Down Syndrome. We had been trying for a baby for many years experiencing several complications including; a miscarriage and an ectopic pregnancy. During this time I had a lot of personal problems which led to heavy drinking. After nine years we finally got pregnant! - That's when our lives truly changed. My wife was ill one morning and took a positive test. The doctor confirmed the pregnancy and given past problems, we went for a scan. Nervous wasn't the word, all I could think about was the miscarriage nine years early at twelve weeks. So I was massively surprised when told my wife was already five months pregnant! Molly was born by emergency Caesarean. She was leaning on her umbilical cord and her heartbeat kept dropping. Molly was born breach and spread out like a starfish in very little amniotic fluid. Within twenty minutes we were informed by the doctors there were signs of Down Syndrome and as we had turned the test down during pregnancy they were going to test her - Somehow we just knew. A few hours went by and Molly was rushed to ICU. First they thought it was her lungs and she was placed on oxygen until a scan confirmed problems with her heart. Whilst she was fighting for her life, we were visited by the Paediatrician. He proceeded to write my daughters future for her whilst she was still fighting to have one. Telling us not to expect her to walk or talk until she was at least five. This made us determined to prove him wrong. Molly spent five weeks in intensive care, in her first twelve months we had 112 hospital appointments. The big one was at twelve weeks when she had heart surgery. The change was instant, within two days she was fidgety and no longer lifeless. She started feeding properly and breathing much better. She even met the future Queen, Kate Middleton, who was visiting Alder Hey at the time. I took voluntary redundancy becoming main carer for Molly. Determined to prove the doctors wrong we taught Molly ‘Makaton Sign Language’ before she was even one year old and worked so hard to help her walk too. I spent that much time caring for her,

that I forgot about drinking and past problems - she gave me purpose. After 12 months my wife took voluntary redundancy so I decided to become a support worker for adults with special needs, something I wouldn't have considered previously. Molly’s 2 year check was one of my proudest days. We didn’t take a pram, I carried her to the doctors door and together we walked through it hand in hand, step by step, then she signed ‘hello doctor’. It felt so great to have proved him wrong! We've never really stopped proving how wrong the ‘Sterotype’ is. My daughter has; been on stage in a real theatre and is a member of an inclusive drama group, she has been in mainstream nursery and infant school, she has achieved every goal set for her and more! I have done numerous fundraising events including; sky dives and having my back waxed in public! We have met many great friends along the way. Even her two God Mothers both have Down Syndrome. All we ever wanted was a family and we count ourselves the luckiest people in the world to have Molly. If you ever meet her you will understand why. Spring Forward to Bedtime...
Early Years
n Sunday 26th March at 1am the clocks will ‘Spring Forward’ an hour. Although it may only seem a small amount of time, it is amazing the difference it can make to the sleep pattern of some children, especially with the lighter nights. Some professionals advise to gradually change your child’s bedtime routine a few weeks before the clock change. A dark room promotes good sleep. Blackout blinds/curtains may be a great investment at this time of year as the nights grow lighter. If your child is afraid of the dark a night light can be useful. Having relaxation time for around an hour before bedtime can reduce the stress and create a calmer environment for more settled children at bedtime.

Primary School Places - Your Rights...
I
f you have applied for a Primary School place for September 2017, you will find out about the place you have been offered on the 16th April. For parents applying for the first time, it can be a very anxious time, but what if you don’t get the school of your choice? If you don’t get the school of choice or any of the schools you selected and applied for, you will automatically be allocated a space in a local school. Whilst the school may not have been your preference, it is worth investigating what the school has to offer your child before you rule it out altogether and often parents have been pleasantly surprised. However, if you feel that the school is unsuitable or doesn’t match your child’s requirements, you may choose to appeal the decision. Firstly, it is advisable to contact your local council to find out what school places are available to you. Remember that class sizes are limited. If you feel that the admission criteria hasn’t been followed properly or that the decision to refuse your child a place wasn’t a reasonable one then you may have grounds to appeal. For legal advise you can contact the Education Law Advice Line on 0345 345 4345. The Coram
At certain times of the year, we like to make the experience of staying with us eggstra special and Easter is a wonderful time to join us for a seasonal break. We’ve got plenty of options for families of all sizes and for different budgets. Come and join the fun at Ribby Hall Village.
Children’s Legal Centre work with Community Legal Advice to provide FREE legal advice and information on education matters. They commonly advise on matters including; Types of school, Admissions, Exclusions and Special Educational Needs. You must appeal separately against each rejection you have received. Deadline to appeal is around the 12th May but it is advisable to check with your local authority on their procedures and deadlines. Appeals must be heard within 40 school days of the deadline for making appeals. If your circumstances change then you may be entitled to re-appeal. Ultimately, you need to feel happy about the school your child will attend and it needs to suit you and most importantly, your child.

Being Sociable in the Schoolyard...
A
re you a social butterfly or a shrinking violet when it comes to interacting with other parents? If you’re a full-time working parent, meeting other school yard parents can admittedly be challenging, but do you make an effort to get to know the parents/carers of your child’s classmates?
How much effort you make with other parents can have an impact on the relationships your child has with their classmates. Simple things such as responding promptly to birthday invitations shows other parents you care and wish to make an effort. Social occasions whether for parents or a children’s birthday party, can be a good opportunity for you to meet other parents, particularly those who work during the week but may be able to attend weekend activities. Some schools have social media or whatsapp groups to give parents the opportunity to interact. These are a great way of keeping up-to-date with day to day activities and come in useful when you’re unsure when the next dress-down day is, or what time sports day starts! Having a child home to play or setting up a playdate is also a great way to meet them and their parents/carers. Again, if you’re a working parent you could perhaps drop a note in your child’s schoolbag to be passed to the child’s parents in the same way you would a birthday invitation. Getting your child involved in local activities can also give you the opportunity to meet the parents of their peers. If you work part-time, from home or are a stay-at-home parent, you could arrange regular meet ups? Perhaps a coffee morning somewhere local to school before/after the school drop off or pick up. If you are a working parent, is it possible to switch shifts or finish early once in a while to give you the opportunity to meet others?

A great way to meet other parents is to join the parent-teacher association (PTA). You may get letters home about their meetings or you could enquire at the school office. You may not get along with every parent you meet, but neither will your child. Many parents find that their children choose like-minded friends who have parents with similar interests to their own. If you try to make an effort with others, they in turn are more likely to do the same for you and your child. So try to attend those birthday parties and school activities - they are beneficial for your child’s friendships and you may just gain some of your own.

SCHOOL HOLS WITH THE TROOPS!
A
s the Easter holidays rapidly approach (where does the term go? Ahem) thoughts in our base camp are already turning to activities to entertain and engage our troopers. But it’s not just about what to do with the troopers in the school holidays. It’s about how to do it. Preparation and Planning Prevent Poor Parental Performance after all. I’m always a bit mystified when people use the term ‘planned like a military operation’ as a form of criticism. A military operation is about moving people and resources from A to B to achieve the specified objective. As a dad with three troopers, I plan every activity like a military operation. And school holidays are no exception. Here’s a few tips from me: Don’t Overstretch the Unit Don’t commit the unit to too many missions. Hyper scheduling makes life difficult - and exhausting - for all of you. It’s not quantity of activity that counts, it’s quality. The most engaging and entertaining thing for all your troopers - even older ones - is your undivided attention. If you are stressed out about transporting troops from one activity to another, then they’re not going to be able to benefit from time with you. Plan your activities beforehand. If you’re staying at home, check out the internet and local papers - you’ll be amazed what’s on nearby (and usually for free). If a big day out (theme park etc.) is planned, then let the next day be a lazy one, spending time together in the house or garden. You’ll need time to relax and recover together. Don’t tell you troopers everything you have planned. Then not only do you not have to deal with disappointments when plans change, but also you’ll have a few surprises up your sleeve. When
planning activities, as in life, it pays to under promise and over deliver. Improvise, Adapt and Overcome Always have a ‘rainy day’ activity or two for when the inevitable happens. One of my favourites is drawing the curtains, getting some popcorn and a film on and having a bit of a ‘matinee’. When my troopers were younger, we’d get suited and booted and go and have competitions about who could jump in the most puddles. Another cracker was building an indoor den with a sheet over the back of the sofa. The key is to join in. The troopers will love it. Transporting - and Entertaining - your Troops. I know it sounds obvious, but once you’ve planned your means of transportation, you need to plan how you are going to entertain your troops. Know your enemy - and the enemy is boredom and frustration. For example, if you’re going to be on a long car journey don’t pack the very noisy toy to entertain your trooper - unless it can be muted - as it will fray your nerves and shorten your flash to bang time. Spotting games are brilliant and require no special equipment. A particularly good one is ‘Mini Cheddar’ where spotting a Mini is 10 points, a yellow car is five points and a yellow Mini (or Mini cheddar) is 25 points. The first one to 100 wins. Save the arguments by allowing one ‘unconfirmed’ sighting (i.e. one that only the spotter can see - normally a Mini cheddar by some strange coincidence). My troopers are now 10, nine and five and we are still playing this game. I actually got the highest score of all time by spotting a cheddar Mini Clubman in Malta, but I’m not big headed about it. Spotting games are also great for all forms of public transport, as are all the songs from our own childhood: The Wheels on the Bus, 10 Men went to Mow, 10 Green Bottles etc.

Creative Learning
An Army Marches on its Stomach - a hungry trooper is an unhappy trooper. Take packed lunches, or picnics, even if you are going somewhere where food is on sale. There are multiple reasons for this: - The time spent making a packed lunch is much MUCH shorter than the time you will spend in the queue, waiting to be served food. - I guarantee it. It puts you in control of what your troopers eat. It’s more convenient as you can eat where and when is best for your family unit. - It’s cheaper. Don’t get me wrong, if you have the money to spend, then please spend it as the economy needs it. But when you’re out and about, food, and especially drinks, can work out to be very expensive (especially when you have a lot of troopers, like me). - Take snacks. It’s a universally acknowledged fact that 10 minutes outside the safety of base camp, troopers will be hungry. Embrace this and plan accordingly. Pack snacks that are suitable for eating on the move. Good options are oatcakes, nuts (allergies permitting), carrot sticks and low fat crisps (as a treat). You could make your own trial mix: seeds, chopped dried fruit and nuts, and some chocolate chips mixed in. - The best fruit for snacks is an apple in my experience - bananas and berries get mashed and oranges require you to find a bin to get rid of the peel, and something to wash sticky juice off hands and faces.
Before your child learns to read words, they will be encouraged to tell the story through looking at picture books and describing what they see, what people might be saying and what events are taking place. To encourage this creative learning and to enable your child to grasp this; 1) read plenty of stories together, discussing the pictures and even adding to the story by asking your child questions about what characters might be thinking or how they would feel in that situation and 2) play games gathering random items and trying to tell a story using the items as the adventure unfolds. You can also create your own story books using this method. Younger children can create picture storyboards and older children can enjoy writing their own stories using their fantastic imagination! We love ‘Storycubes’, they are a great investment. A pack of dice featuring various images on each side that encourage you and your child to make up a story until all cubes have been used. Available from all good retailers from £10.
- Make sure you have water, and plenty of it. Get the troopers water bottles that can be refilled. I usually fill them up with squash when we leave base camp, but all refills after that are water. So there’s my top tips, but I’m always looking for new ones to add to the armoury especially as my troops are getting older. So, if you’ve got any tips you could share with me, please let me know.
