Pregnancy
Your Baby’s Movements Week by Week with
0-8 weeks - Your baby will begin to move at around 7 weeks pregnant and while these will be visible on an ultrasound scan you will not feel your baby move for another couple of months. 10 to 14 weeks - At 10 weeks your baby can flex and turn his head and bring his hands up to his face. By 11 weeks your baby can yawn! At 12 weeks the baby’s skeleton begins to develop into bone and although you still won’t feel them yet your baby is developing more defined movements. At 14 weeks your baby can begin to move his eyes. 20 to 24 weeks - It is likely to be around this time that you first notice your baby’s movements. It may feel like flutters at first, also known as quickening. If this is your first baby it can sometimes feel like gas or indigestion. Over the next few weeks it is a good idea to make a note of your baby’s activity pattern, do they kick more in the morning or evening? Do they have spells when they do a lot of movements? This will help you determine if there is a change in your baby’s regular pattern of movement. 24 to 28 weeks - Around this time you may start to notice when your baby gets hiccups. These will feel like regular, rhythmic, jerky movements. These are an involuntary reflex and so do not count as movement. You may begin to notice that your baby responds to outside sounds and jumps at sudden loud noises. Your baby may begin to follow a pattern for waking and sleeping. Very often this is a different pattern from yours, so when you go to bed at night, the baby may wake up and start kicking. 29 weeks - Your baby will begin to make smaller, more definite movements and the movements may begin to be more noticeable from the outside. This is a great time to get your partner involved as they can sit and talk to your bump
6|
WWW.MUMMYANDMEMAGAZINE.CO.UK
and feel the baby kicking. It is a great bonding experience. 32 weeks - Your babies movements will gradually increase week by week until this time when they will plateau but NOT REDUCE. If you notice any reduction in your baby’s movements you should report it. The care you receive will depend on your stage of pregnancy. Your baby will not run out of room and should continue to move up to and during birth. 36 weeks - Your baby can take up his final, usually head-down, position. This is more likely to happen at this stage if this is your first baby. The firm muscles of your uterus and tummy will help to keep him in place. The main movements you are likely to feel now are jabs from his arms and legs, and possibly painful kicks to your ribs. 36 to 40 weeks - Your baby will be getting larger, and won’t be rolling over as often. Instead, you may notice a persistent kick underneath your ribs on one side or the other. Although the type of movement will have changed, the frequency should not. You should continue to feel your baby as frequently as before. If you notice any change your baby’s movement you should report it to your midwife or antenatal ward.

Why shouldn’t I use a home doppler? If you saw someone collapsed in the street would you check their pulse and walk away? Or would you call an ambulance? The same goes for your baby, if you notice a change in your baby’s regular pattern of movement, they could be unwell. Do not take the presence of a heartbeat that all is ok. If your baby is unwell or in distress the only time something can be done is when there is a heartbeat. When there is no heartbeat it is too late. If you notice a change in your babies regular pattern of movement call your midwife.
Do not use your home doppler for reassurance

Planning to breastfeed? • Lying Down Position - With your baby lying alongside you and nose to nipple, you won’t have to support their weight and you both may find this a comfortable way to feed, particularly for night feeds, although you should be careful not to fall asleep in this position.
P
lanning to breastfeed? It is a good idea to prepare yourself for your breastfeeding journey and where possible to attend a local antenatal breastfeeding support group. Preparation will give you confidence to feed once your baby once they have been born.
• Take your time! Don’t expect things to work for you and your baby straight away. Remember that this is a whole new journey for your baby and for you! • Call on support! There is plenty of support around, from breastfeeding helplines offering support over the phone to local agencies who can visit you at hospital or at home. Make sure that if you and your baby are struggling to adapt to breastfeeding, that you call on help. Ask friends and family for support too, even if it is to change a nappy or make you a drink. • Look after yourself! It can be easy to panic and be concerned about your baby. However, eating well, drinking plenty of water and getting rest are all important factors to a healthy milk supply and successful breastfeeding. There are a few different positions you can try when exploring what is best for you and your baby. • Cradle Position - In this position, your arm supports your baby. This position may be uncomfortable after a c-section and can take some getting used to. • Cross Cradle Position - In this position, your baby lies across you with arm opposite your breast holding them gently around the back of their neck. Holding them in this position allows their head to move forwards and backwards whilst feeding. This is an ideal position for early feeding when newborn. • Rugby Ball Position - In this position, your baby is tucked under your arm like a rugby ball. Their nose is level with your nipple and their feet towards your back. This is a great position for c-section mothers who may find a cradle position uncomfortable. This is also a good position for feeding twins.

It doesn’t matter what shape or size you are, your breasts are designed to feed your baby. Through pregnancy the hormone progesterone makes the areola swell (often causing that ‘tingling’ feeling). Inside your breast clusters of cells called ‘Lobes’ produce the milk which flows to the ducts. It is recommended that you exclusively breastfeed your baby for the first 6 months of their life and that you try to continue to feed your baby for the first two years of their life (or longer should you desire). Any length of time you breastfeed is invaluable to your baby. Before your breastmilk kicks in, your body produces a thicker substance called colostrums which provides natural antibodies to help your baby fight infection. This is often more difficult to express, so if you are planning of using a breastpump don’t worry if you don’t see much being produced. Your breastmilk is tailor-made to meet the needs of your baby and will provide a variety of different tastes for your baby which can often help reduce allergies. Breastfeeding allows you time to bond with your baby. It can be nice to sit and feed your baby in a quiet space to relax. If your baby is reluctant to feed, this can be for a number of reasons including; • Destressed when held due to assisted birth i.e. holding their head may be uncomfortable if their birth was assisted by forceps or ventouse. In this case, ask your health professional to show you alternative feeding positions. • Tongue Tied baby i.e. your baby’s tongue appears to be heartshaped at the tip. If your baby is tongue tied, this can lead to a poor latch, sliding off the nipple. Fatigue in feeding and other symptoms. It is important that you speak to your health professional, you may find expressing your breastmilk for feeding a suitable alternative. For those who decide not to breastfeed, or find that breastfeeding doesn’t work for them, visit www.nct.org.uk/parenting/bottle-feedingyour-baby for tips and support on bottle feeding your baby.

Birth & Beyond
Each issue we will be putting YOUR questions to our panel of experts.
This issue, Leading Baby Sleep Expert as seen on TV and best selling author of ‘Baby Secrets’ - Jo Tantum, gives advice on sleep routines.
O
n your journey through life as a parent, you feel so many emotions. Amazing joy and euphoria, panic, doubt, love and an overwhelming sense of the need to do the right thing for your little one. When you first have your baby there are different methods of parenting, and you will have probably decided which way to follow, and change your mind a few times along the way.
Write a 48 feeding and sleeping log The first thing I ask these parents to do is to write down their babies feeding and sleeping times for 48 hours. Sometimes this in itself can be a Eureka moment! They start to understand their baby better, and can start things back on the right track. Another important thing for your baby is having regular nap times in the day. This will encourage better night sleeps, this is because one of the main reasons babies wake often in the night is if they are overtired. Introduce a good bedtime routine Having a good bedtime routine can also help your baby sleep better. Babies work on a 12 hour day and 12 hour night. So as long as you stick to that rule your baby won't be overtired at bedtime.
When parents contact me on my website it's usually because they don't know where to turn and just need some answers. They start to feel so exhausted through lack of sleep, they feel guilty as they aren't enjoying their baby. And the wonderful family life they envisaged is slowly crumbling.

asktheexpert @mummyandmemagazine.co.uk
Always have calm/quiet time before bedtime. So no TV, noisy flashing toys. This will start to help you and your baby have a proper wind down time. Then once your baby has had their bath then stay in the room they will be sleeping in. Get their pj's on and feed them in very low lights. From 5 months you can introduce a story before the feed. I hope this helps you. If you need more support I offer email and Skype packages and we also have Gentle Sleep Trainers, Night Nannies and Maternity Nurses to help you teach your little one to love sleep.

All questions sent to our panel will be published anonymously and any personal information will be treated confidentially. *Always speak to your own midwife or GP for any urgent concerns.

Years in
Publication Babies!
&5
Celebrating 5 years of Mummy and Me Magazine with Magazine Founder Michelle Thompson who is expecting her Fifth Baby! 1. How did you come up with the idea for ‘Mummy and Me Magazine’? 6 years ago I was a first time Mummy to my daughter Eden. Like most first time parents I found the experience daunting but extremely enjoyable and I wanted to do everything right. I was given so much information from health professionals and children’s centres that it baffled me why it all wasn’t in one place. So I started putting information together for myself and sharing the idea with Mummy friends who thought I was definitely on to something and should pursue my idea to produce a parenting publication.
2. What is your inspiration? My inspiration when I began was my daughter Eden. I knew that if I could make the publication a success, it would mean I could spend more time with her - giving up my 9-5 job. Now, 5 years on, my inspiration is all 4 (soon to be 5) of my children!
3. You’re expecting baby number 5. How do you juggle work and family life? It has become increasingly more difficult the more children I have had. My primary role is ‘Mummy’ and I want to do that to the best of my ability. I’m very lucky to have an amazing husband who is extremely supportive and loves that I have been able to pursue a business I enjoy, whilst being there
for our children. I love that I’m a Mummy who is able to take my children to playgroups, walk my children to school and watch their nativity plays. But, working for myself means sometimes putting in crazy hours through the night or having to apologise to business associates on the phone that they may hear a noisy child in the background of our call. But as a Mumpreneur, that’s how I have to do things!
4. What are your plans for
Mummy and Me Magazine? There are lots of things I would like for the future of Mummy and Me Magazine. I am constantly asked when the publication will be available in additional regions, whether I would consider more online opportunities and you may have heard me occasionally on radio slots which has been fun and something I would happily do more of. But, as I’m literally weeks off having another baby I will have to say “Watch this space” and see what life brings with 5 children aged 6 and under.
5. What advice would you offer other parents looking to start a business?
email: info@ mummyandme magazine .co.uk
Walt Disney once said “All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them” and I totally agree that if you want something to happen then MAKE it happen!

body, changing outlook, people talking to your bump or only about babies. You might be having a bit of an identity crisis – and to make it worse, none of your loved clothes fit you anymore. Every website, baby magazine you read tells you what to eat/ drink/do and updates you on your changing body and developing baby. And although this is important, nowhere talks to pregnant women about how to look and feel great (and like you), exclusively. You are thrown into the strange world of
Early Years through to the online retailers so you can buy them there and then. Whilst I was on Maternity leave I needed to start thinking about my next career step. I wanted to do something for me. Something that had a positive impact on people. Something that fit with my new life with my family but used (and grew) all my skills from my 10 years’ experience in Advertising and Digital Marketing.
Maternity Wear – ‘what can I wear?, who sells it? Is it expensive? Is it all ugly?’ and ‘I can’t find anything suitable for work!’ I spent hours online trying to understand it. Getting
&
You
A
Your Child
School Ready
s the new academic year approaches, many parents can feel anxious about the start of term. Perhaps this is even your child’s first time at nursery or school and you are anxious about how they will take to the new routine (or indeed how you will)? In preparation for school, Mummy and Me have put together some useful tools to help get your child ‘school ready’. Being able to dress themselves is something very useful at nursery or school. Pacey (Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years) offer some great resources including a ‘Ready, Steady Dress’ Dressing to Impress worksheet. This is a FREE downloadable activity sheet with images of school uniform for your child to colour in and piece together. This is a great visual when getting themselves ready. Visit www.pacey.org.uk and search ‘being school ready’. Make sure your child’s uniform is well labelled with their name and that they have simple to fasten clothes and shoes to encourage independence (and to help out the teacher who has 30+ children to assist). A worry many parents have is whether their child will make friends and be happy at school. When you are out and about with your child
encourage them to ask the names of other children they encounter when playing and to introduce themselves. Set a good example to your child, don’t be shy yourself and introduce yourself to other parents and perhaps discuss arranging playdates outside of school. Gross and Fine Motor skills are learnt through play and ultimately lead to your child being able to write using a pencil or to follow activities in the classroom. To help these along the way you can; Play catch on a regular basis, stack blocks together, ensure that you child holds a pencil correctly, string beads on a necklace and use safety scissors to cut out shapes. At school your nursery/school, your child will begin to learn letters and words. A great way to encourage this along is to play ‘I-Spy’ whilst out and about with your child. You will be amazed how quickly they pick this up and enjoy impressing you with their knowledge! Social and emotional development plays an important role in your child’s academic learning. At school your child will be expected to tidy up after playing with toys. To encourage this at home, you could implement a ‘ransom’ box for toys left out after a set tidy-up. Taking turns and sharing, are both things children can find difficult. Playing board games encourages your child to learn to take turns. For 2-7 year olds, Orchard Toys offer some great games that are simple to follow and fun to play. Visit www.orchardtoys.com/games to view the range. Children grow so fast, so enjoy every single moment and don’t put pressure on you or your child to know too much before they start school. Best of luck for the new term!

M
ossley Hill Preschool has been established in the church rooms of Mossley Hill Parish Church for 26 years. A hidden gem nestled in the conservation area off Rose Lane, it is a pack away nursery, set out every day offering a very personal level of childcare.
by the local authority in their Red/Amber/Green (RAG) scheme and achieving a Gold Quality Mark for the teaching and provision for Mathematics. The children at Mossley Hill are given the time and space to learn the foundations of everything they will need in preparation for school.
Recently refurbished and extended the new hall is bright and airy, with child sized bathroom facilities and private, green outdoor space. The Preschool operates for 18hrs Monday to Friday 9.30-12.30 and offers two longer days until 2pm to take in a shared lunch period to aid the children’s social skills eating together and sitting at the table. There is also a drop-in breakfast club facility from 8:45am.
Working in partnership with parents was identified as a key strength in the Preschool’s last Ofsted inspection report. As a charity, the Preschool is governed by a committee of parents and in this way, should you wish, you can be integrally involved in the running of the Preschool. Every half term theme is shared with parents to encourage home/school interaction. Parents are actively encouraged to be involved in their child’s learning from home reading through to some parents doing educational talks to the children.

The academic year of 2016/17 has seen days out to the museum and farm, carol singing at Tesco, a Christmas nativity play and visit from Father Christmas, an Easter Bonnet parade and visit from the Easter Bunny, World book day, a visit from police on their police horses, a sports day and end of year graduation ceremony for school leavers and end of term party. It is a busy and fun place to learn and the Preschool operate an open door policy so you are able to drop in and see how sessions are running at any time. As a small and personal operation you are able to speak to staff at any time. The Preschool has invested in an electronic system for recording observations and tracking progress. This has enabled staff to send parents photographs and comments of daily activities. Parents can contribute to their child’s portfolio with home experiences and each term you will receive a detailed report. Spaces are limited and September is the ideal time to enrol your child with children having left to start school. If interested, have a look at their website: https://mossleyhillpreschool.wordpress. com or find them on Facebook at Mossley Hill Pre-school.

Daddy and Me
WRITTEN BY REGULAR COLUMNIST NEIL SINCLAIR A.K.A
MEMORIES OF 9/11 This Blog entry was originally written 5 years ago. But for Neil Sinclair, every September brings back the vivid memories of that day and living in New York at the time.
T
uesday September 11 started much like any other day. It was my day off work and I walked my pregnant wife Tara 20 blocks to her office. It was a beautiful clear, sunny day. When I got back to our apartment I put the TV on (sound down) and started pottering around. My wife called me around 9.30. She was very shaken and her first words were ‘don’t panic’. I immediately thought it was something to do with our baby. She asked me if I had the TV on and I replied that I had, and some film about the Twin Towers was on. Then she told me the terrible news – it wasn’t a film. It was real. She was watching it from her office window and saw the second plane go in (although she still thought it may be a bomb as she was watching from further up the island so didn’t see the plane, just the explosion). She told me that her bosses had said that they couldn’t guarantee any one’s safety and so she had been told that she must go to a place she felt safe. She wanted me to come and get her straight away. I ran all the way. The subways were all running but I didn’t know how long that would last as everyone suspected a terrorist attack. When I got to her, things had advanced. A plane had hit the Pentagon and news had reached us that there was another plane but we didn’t know where. Rumours spread round her office that it was coming back to New York. She didn’t want to go back to our apartment as it was right by the United Nations, which she thought might be a possible target. So we decided to go to her sister Sam’s apartment which was near her office. As we walked there, we passed St Vincent’s hospital, the nearest hospital to the Twin
Towers. Doctors and nurses were out in the street with gurnies, ready to receive the casualties that never came. We all sat in Sam’s apartment round a television watching it unfold, Sam, Tara, me and Jennifer: a friend who lived in Brooklyn but who couldn’t get home as they closed all routes on and off Manhattan. After a while we felt we needed to get out – we all just felt we wanted to be with people. We went to buy water as we had been told that the water supply to Manhattan may have been contaminated, and then to our local diner. It was absolutely packed, but very subdued. Everyone was just stunned and shocked. It is hard to articulate how unusual that was for New York. Much later when we walked home to our apartment, there wasn’t a single person in the streets. There are always people out on the street in Manhattan – the ‘city that never sleeps’ – but that night we didn’t see another soul, despite the fact all the commuters had to find places to stay, and some people estimate that figure to be 2 million people. And there wasn’t a single homeless person on the streets either.
The next morning posters had started to appear ‘Have you seen this person?’ with a picture and a name, and contact details.

Daddy and Me Thousands of them. Everywhere. People still thought then that there were survivors wondering around dazed, or perhaps in hospital with memory loss because of the trauma. We didn’t really know that there had been so few survivors – yet. Shrines with flowers and candles had sprung up overnight outside the many fire stations that had lost men. The FDNY funerals started very quickly after that. Many went along to pay respects to the brave men who had done their best to rescue people from what they must have known was an impossible situation. Me, Tara and Sam volunteered to help – together with everyone we knew – the rescue crews that were down at the Twin Towers. But there were too many volunteers. We went to the Park Avenue Armoury and people where queuing around the block to register as volunteers. Great crowds of people started to gather alongside the West Side Highway to cheer the crews as they went back and forth. Over the following weeks and months the crowds dwindled, but never completely disappeared. In the following days, people started to arrive from all over America to visit the site, to be in New York and show their support. But they were just as powerless to help – or to change anything – as we ourselves were. I worked at the UK Mission to the UN at the time, and I was called in the next day. I took the calls from hotels all over New York
who had British citizens staying that had not returned. The Mission had to coordinate collecting their belongings and contacting relatives to return them. I am not articulate enough to explain what that felt like. By then the stories about the victims calling their loved ones on their mobile phones started to filter out too. It seemed at the time like tragedy was being heaped on tragedy. It hung heavy on all of us.
When people ask what it was like to be there, I can only say it was like being in a surreal film. It didn’t seem real – we just couldn’t believe what we were witnessing with our own eyes. It was too terrible. It was too big. I feel emotional writing about it years later. It has taught me an important life lesson though – I never leave my wife or troopers without telling them how much I love them.
