October-November 2014
Company Focus - Polarn O. Pyret Pages 4 - 5 Pregnancy Pages 6 - 9
Hello lovely readers,
What a busy September that was! Working with the North West Baby & Toddler Show in Manchester was fantastic (and we even produced the show literature for there and London too!). But with a new baby it’s been an exhausting few weeks. Rather than ‘throw’ an issue together, we made the decision to bring you a joint October-November issue that has the high standard you expect from our publication. Thank-you again for all your support and love for Mummy and Me Magazine. I do thoroughly enjoying bringing each issue to you (even if it is challenging with 3 children aged 3 and under!). So I hope that you enjoy this issue. We have taken the stress out of shopping by bringing you a Christmas Gift Guide of all the top toys and musthave goodies. We are thrilled to introduce you to Polarn O.Pyret who are our Company Focus this month, we have our usual delights from Annabel Karmel and Daddy tips from Commando Dad, and we have featured an interview with Justin Fletcher (A.K.A Mr Tumble) ahead of his tour (it was great getting to speak to the man behind the ‘clown’). So, grab a cuppa and enjoy...

Discover the Best... in Swedish Baby and Childrenswear... Our name Polarn O. Pyret means ‘Buddy and the little one’
in Swedish. O. is the equivalent of our ‘&’, short for Och – Swedish for ‘and’. You say it like this: “Pole arn oh pier et”. However most people know this children’s clothing brand as PO.P.
Brand Heritage Polarn o. pyret
In the early 1900’s in Sweden, travelling sewing machine salesman Nils Adamsson decided to open a small shop selling condoms, after noticing the impact family size was having on struggling households. By the 1930’s his wife Karin was making and selling baby clothing in a new department of the small shop in Stockholm, and so the family business grew and by 1976 the Polarn O. Pyret brand, famous mainly for soft cotton striped clothing was born.
UK There is a Polarn O. Pyret store on nearly every high street in Sweden, and in 2006 this Swedish national treasure was brought to the UK by Mats and Jo Nilsson. Mats, like most Swedish children grew up wearing PO.P clothes and wanted to be able to invest in similar quality at a fair price for his UK based family. There are now 17 stores in the UK including a large Concession store in House of Fraser, Deansgate, Manchester; and the award winning online store is

PO.P can also be found online at John Lewis, House of Fraser and Mothercare.
The Philosophy
4|
Is simple…children need clothes that they can play in, the designers strive to make clothes that let children be children. For Polarn O. Pyret this means goodlooking clothes that make life easier. Clothes that can withstand

wear and tear and can be handed down from brother to sister.
There is no such thing as bad weather… just the wrong clothes PO.P design outerwear with one thing in mind, keep children happy, warm and dry in any weather. This means flexible, lightweight and breathable fabrics loaded with a multitude of features to keep out the wind and rain. Their best selling waterproof Fleece Jacket attaches inside the Wind and Waterproof Coats creating a 3 in 1 solution that can stand up to any British weather. Look out for the thermal layers in silky polyester and merino wool that wick moisture away from the skin, important for active children in cold weather as any moisture near the skin will make them feel cold.
Unisex Much of the collection is unisex, you will not find much powder pink and baby blue in the baby collection. Up to around age 12 boys and girls body shapes do not differ, and the brand believes that gendering small children is best avoided. Who wears what, and in what colour is up to you. Both boys and girls need good-looking clothes that are strong and versatile, and can be washed and dried easily.
The Stripes You will always find stripes at PO.P, in fact PO.P is often referred to as the stripy brand. The PO.P classic stripes were introduced back in the 1975 by the renowned Swedish designer Gunilla Axen. The quality of the organic cotton, the cut of the fabric and the stitching is outstanding. To you, this means that these comfy unisex clothes will hold their shape and colour, stay looking smart and are easy to care for.
Eco Over 30% of the range is made from high quality, soft organic cotton and Polarn O. Pyret is the first children’s wear chain to receive the GOTS certification, the world leading standard for organic textiles. The brand also encourages

families to re-use the clothing and hand it down or sell it on – the garments are famous for looking good for not one but many children wash after wash.
Details make the difference... Dressing children may not seem like a science, but PO.P certainly approach it as such. Coats in lightweight fabrics with pre-bent arms so that children can move freely. Breathable textiles to ensure they don’t get too hot when activity levels step up. Newborn clothes with extra flat and soft seams, positioned away from babies resting points. Socks with extra attention to elastic are more challenging to pull off. Clothing that can take a stain and bacteria busting hot wash when needed. Detachable hoods and reflectives front, back and side for safety.

Every Minute Of Every Day
O
ne Born Every Minute, Channel 4’s hugely popular, BAFTA award winning documentary series, is back and coming to Liverpool. Chronicling the extraordinary highs and lows of day-to-day life in a bustling maternity unit, this heart-warming programme films 24 hours a day over a 7 week period with forty remotelyoperated cameras. From the reception desk to the neo-natal ward; from the operating theatre to the birthing pool, the series captures the beginning of life as it really happens. It observes the dramatic, emotional and often funny moments that go hand in hand with bringing a new life into the world, from the perspective of the soon-to-be parents and family, as well as the hospital staff. Since the series first aired in 2010, over 150 babies have been born on camera in Bristol,

Musical Bumps...
Some experts believe in the so called ‘Mozart effect’ saying that introducing your child to music from the earliest stage can enhance their IQ and capability later in life. There is no hard evidence to prove it, but it is widely thought that exposure to music makes children smarter at Mathematics. The rhythm and timings used in music can assist with counting and basic maths skills.
Antenatal Physio Led Pilates Classes
Of course, there are many companies who have produced CD’s of ‘Baby Music’, often containing classical pieces such as Brahms Lullaby. Suggestions of good classical pieces for babies can be found at www.classicfm.com/discover/ collections/baby-music.
MUSICAL BUMPS
A
t 16 weeks into your pregnancy, the tiny bones in your unborn baby’s ear are finally in place. This means that they are more likely to be able to hear sounds outside the womb. They can hear your voice and sounds around and it is even at this early stage that you can introduce your baby to music.
Regardless of such claims, music should play a very important role in your child’s life. Lullabies have been used for years to calm babies and help them sleep. Listening to music when trying to calm your child down or begin the bedtime routine is a wonderful technique. It can help to sway or rock to the music too. The calming sounds provide a wonderful way to bond and interact with your baby, often providing reassurance through a familiar piece of music.
You will notice that your bump may start jiggling and kicking to certain tunes and you can be certain that once your baby is born they will notice television jingles or your mobile phone ringtone. There’s something special about watching your baby start to bounce or sway to recognisable tunes.Try out different types of music with your bump or baby! Are they kicking to the beat?

Birth & Beyond
Breastfeeding - What toExpect... T here are many changes that take place during pregnancy, one of which is that your breasts prepare for their role in making milk. From about 20 weeks into your pregnancy, your breasts will produce a rich mixture of proteins, vitamins and substances for fighting infections, this is called colostrum. This is usually a yellow/golden colour.
BREASTFEEDING - WHAT TO EXPECT
After birth, your baby feeding will send signals to your breasts to produce milk. At around 3-4 days, the colostrum changes into a whitish milk. This milk is more creamy (higher in fat) and more satisfying for your baby. The more your baby feeds, the more milk you will produce. Once they have finished feeding on one breast, offer the other.
Your baby’s instinct is to breastfeed, this instinct is particularly strong after birth, therefore it may help if you spend time cuddling your baby on your chest with your skin against theirs. Skin-to-skin can be done after a Caesarean section as well as a vaginal birth. But if you are unable to have skin-toskin with your baby post-birth, you can do this at a later stage. Don’t expect breastfeeding to happen straight away, some babies don’t (perhaps due to sleepiness affected by the pain relief drugs used in labour). A midwife should be on-hand to assist you should you want help.
Once out of hospital, many women do not feel comfortable feeding in public places. Some department stores such as John Lewis, offer ‘feeding rooms’ that offer a relaxed and more If feeding is comfortable private environment for breastfeeding Mums If you feed for just and your baby is content to be able to feed. 1 day the antibodies after feeds, they are likely in your colostrum will to be feeding correctly Meeting other breastfeeding Mums can help provide natural immunity and getting enough from infection and will help too. Is it true that Philip Schofield and his side-kick Gordon the Gopher (who some of our readers will remember from their own childhood) were the inspiration for being a children’s television entertainer? That’s true, I was in my third year at drama school when I had the pleasure of meeting Philip. He advised that I should put together a show reel,

how are you?... so with the help of my sister that’s what I did. A month later I got my first job! We understand that one of the first characters you created was Arthur Sleep, how does it feel to have created a character a number of years ago that is still enjoyed by children today? It gives me a real buzz. Arthur Sleep and Gail Force were on that first show reel I produced on a VHS tape. The show was called Justin Time TV and featured lots of the sketches seen in the shows still on television today. Of course, it is Mr Tumble that young children all associate you with, how did this character come about? Mr Tumble is very dear to my heart. He was created over 13 years ago now and he is a crucial character for helping children. Mr Tumble is absolutely loved my kids. I was working on a show called Tikabilla when the BBC told me about a show they had the idea of that would feature Makaton signing. They offered me the role of the presenter. They told me about the character of Mr Tumble and here we are today. The series ‘Something Special’ featuring Mr Tumble has won 5 BAFTA awards. You have also received an MBE and we believe that back in 2007 over 3,500 people signed a petition to
It is a show I feel very passionate about because I have realized how important this is particularly to promote signing. It’s great to engage with the children and to meet them because kids love that. The feedback has also been amazing. I often have parents telling me stories of how crucial the show has been in aiding their child’s development. Even how after watching the show their child has spoke for the first time. So the show is really important. Did you have to learn makaton sign language for the show? Yes, I was an absolute novice and in the space of 2 weeks had to learn about 300 different signs. We work very closely with the Makaton Charity and the crew are really helpful too so I’m learning all the time. So, next Easter you go on tour bringing Mr Tumble and all our favourite characters along with you. The tour is called Mr Tumble’s Circus. Tell us more about the circus theme… A few years ago we toured with Justin and Friends - Justin’s House. So this time we decided to bring the much loved character of Mr Tumble. As he’s a clown, a circus seemed the obvious theme. I’m really excited about being on tour, you can’t beat the buzz of a live show in front of thousands of people. There’s going to be a lot of swift wardrobe changes as Aunt Polly and the other characters will be coming. But the tour also features Andy and other Cbeebies favourites who will be entertaining the crowds. We have got Little Monster who will be out in the audience and with the circus theme we have lots of circus skills like juggling. So I’m really excited about it all.
Mummy and Me Magazine is a North West title, so it’s nice to see that the tour will be stopping at the Liverpool Echo Arena and Manchester Arena. Despite being born in Reading, we believe you are a Manchester City fan, is that correct? Well I do enjoy football, but how that came about was filming an episode of Something Special. The child featuring in the show was a huge Manchester City fan so we filmed at their stadium and the staff there were fantastic. What are you most looking forward to about the North West leg of your tour? Most of children’s tv is filmed in Salford now, so we are often in the North West. But I can’t wait to get out on the road with the crew and tour. It’s going to be fantastic. Most Mr Tumble fans enjoy joining in with regularly phrases, actions and makaton signs. Will the tour include a lot of audience participation? Absolutely! It’s all in there! A lot of slap stick comedy. I grew up watching Laurel and Hardy and Charlie Chaplin who were the inspiration for the Wacky Characters like Mr Tumble.
JUSTIN FLETCHER EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW!
give you an OBE. This is all centered around the fact that the ‘Something Special’ series is an educational programme that helps bridge the gap between able bodied and disable children. Is this something you have personally been affected by, or is it something you simply feel passionate about?
good to see you!
Early Years
it’s o, hell , o Hell
Probably a difficult question, but do you think is the most rewarding thing about what you do? It’s actually a very easy question to answer, Something Special every time! Changing lives with Makaton signs. I often get parents writing letters saying how it has helped their children and signs often ease frustration. Even for simple things like wanting a drink. It’s really important to continue this programme and next year we are shooting a further 25 episodes. Reader Question – Would you ever go on ‘Strictly’ (Come Dancing)? I have been asked this questions many times before, perhaps as the ‘Comedy dancer’? When I was leaner I did enjoy dancing and in fact I did some dance at Drama School...Never say never!

Early Years ANNABEL KARMEL WEANING ADVICE & RECIPE
So you want to start introducing your little one to the wonderful world of food…but where do you start? Weaning your baby from milk to solids is an exciting time and a big step for both of you. Your baby will be entering a whole new world of tastes and textures, and you’ll want to feel safe in the knowledge that you are giving them the right foods for the very best start in life.
T
he general rule is that babies should be weaned from around six months old; this is the age recommended by Government guidelines. Milk provides all the nutrients your baby needs for the first 6 months or so, but some parents feel that their babies are ready before then.
17 week as his gastrointestinal function won’t have fully matured. Every baby is different, and in families with a history of food allergy, hay fever, eczema or asthma, it’s best to try to exclusively breastfeed for the first six months. Also as your baby gets older he will need more iron and nutrients than milk alone can provide.
If this is the case with your baby, it’s acceptable to introduce solids a little earlier, but not before

When you start weaning, milk will still form a major part of your baby’s diet. Whether you are breastfeeding or using a bottle, milk will provide all the nutrients they need. Babies should continue to have breast or formula milk throughout the first year. Up to the age of one year, your baby needs a minimum of 600ml (20 oz) of breast or formula milk a day. Recently the advice was to introduce every new food separately with a space of three days before introducing another food. However, unless there is a history of allergy or you are concerned about your baby’s reactions to a certain food, there is no reason why new foods should not be introduced on consecutive days, provided you keep to the list of the best first foods. When to introduce cow’s milk Cow’s milk and goat’s milk aren’t suitable

Annabel’s tip: Occasionally, parents make the mistake of giving their babies solid food when they’re hungry, when what they actually need is an additional milk feed. Plus, giving a baby too much solid food too quickly may lead to constipation. First foods are more about introducing food than giving a full meal.
ANNABEL KARMEL WEANING ADVICE & RECIPE
alternatives to breast or formula milk before one year, as they don’t contain sufficient iron and other nutrients. However, they can be used in cooking or with cereal from six months. Use fullfat milk, as babies need the calories for growth.
Pumpkin is a great seasonal vegetable, perfect for making autumn purees for your little one. Pumpkin makes a great first weaning food as it is easily digested and unlikely to cause an allergy. Pumpkin Puree Prep time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 45-60 minutes Serving: 6 portions Suitable for freezing Ingredients: 1 small pumpkin (about 700 g/11⁄2 lb) cut into quarters and deseeded A little sunflower oil A little breast milk or formula milk (optional) Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas 6. Put the halves of pumpkin sliced side up in a shallow ovenproof dish. Pour in some water – it should be about 1 cm (1⁄3 in) deep. Put the pumpkin in the oven for 45 minutes to 1 hour. 2. Remove the dish from the oven and allow the squash to cool. Scoop out the flesh and purée to the desired consistency. You can add a little of your baby’s usual milk if you wish.

F
rozen fans are in for a treat this festive season with a brand new fairy tale experience launching at the Disney Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at Harrods this November. Inspired by the #1 animated film of all time, the Royal Experience will join the existing Coronation and Snow Queen Frozen experiences, which offer fans the chance to be transformed into Anna or Elsa. The Disney Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at Harrods is set in a fairy tale castle enclosed within the glittering walls of Harrods and marks the first time that a Disney Parks and Resorts offering has been recreated in the UK. In the stately fitting room behind the large wooden castle doors, dazzling dresses and shimmering accessories are encased and within the boutique salon, ornate golden mirrors line the walls. From the moment a child steps into the world, imagination becomes reality. Children are hosted by their very own Fairy Godmother-in-Training to learn the qualities needed to become a Princess or Knight, take a royal oath and enjoy the magical experience. Perfect as a gift for children aged 3-12 or for a special celebration, the new Frozen Royal experience is a magical addition to the current range of experiences available to choose from.

he magical Peter Rabbit children’s section was created and donated by the book’s publisher Frederick Warne, who worked with reading charity Booktrust to transform Gorton Library in east Manchester. Frederick Warne is also donating more than £1000’s worth of children’s books. Promoting the positive impact a joy of reading can have on children’s lives, Oscar-winning actor and writer, Emma Thompson said,
Following on from the success of The Further Tale of Peter Rabbit in 2012 (the first new Peter Rabbit title since Beatrix Potter’s final tale in 1930) and The Christmas Tale of Peter Rabbit in 2013, Emma Thompson triumphs once more with The Spectacular Tale of Peter Rabbit.

The Hero Pup (Megan Rix) A must have read for all young animal lovers this Christmas. £5.99 - puffin.co.uk and all good Book Stores.
here are lots of fun ways for children to create pictures of fireworks. You could place blobs of glue onto a piece of card, flick out the glue into star shapes then scatter with different coloured glitter. Or perhaps you would prefer to do some marble painting of fireworks?
You will need:
Place a marble into some paint (it’s a bit tricky so grown up help is required), place a piece of blank paper into a tray or shallow box and drop in the paint covered marble. Moving the box will then create a painted firework image.
Now colour over the top with black crayon, making sure that you cover all the first layer of bright colours.
A fun idea for an unusual fireworks picture simply using wax crayons. (Younger children love to reveal the different colours as they create the art).

‘For those of us lucky enough to have been read to as children, to have had access to books and libraries and to have had a love of reading engrained in us, we each have a spectacular tale we can refer to which inspired a lifelong love of books. Every child should have a spectacular tale in their life that can start them on their reading journey and get them off to a flying start in life. Peter Rabbit certainly had a big impact on me as a child and I’m thrilled to be opening the Peter Rabbit library in Gorton today. I hope the local community will enjoy the space and the books and use it to transform lives.’
