Spring Is In The Air, Yay!
I just love it here in sunny SA and am so looking forward to another glorious summer. We are so lucky with the climate although going on the past couple of months, it’s been even hotter in the UK and Europe – which doesn’t happen often, believe me!

Cover Stars
Meet the Cover Stars Our adorable cover stars this month are Mia Suri Govender and Hudson Naude (both 4 years old). Mia and Hudson met about two years ago when they attended Bunnyland Playschool together and remain excellent friends. Mia is a fun-loving and gentle soul who loves being outdoors. She enjoys anything that can get her hands dirty, such as gardening, baking or painting. She takes the responsibility of being a big sister to Kira (2) very seriously and is an incredibly loyal friend. When asked what she wants to be when she grows up, she always responds that she wants to be a dentist to animals because “even animals need healthy teeth.” Hudson is a special little boy with a big heart. He is full of joy, and it spreads to all
those around him. He is a water baby – loves swimming (even in winter). He loves anything sporty and is obsessed with Paw Patrol. Hudson loves to talk about anything and everything - and his favourite past time is playing with his siblings Amber and Tayne. At Family Dental Care, they understand that visiting a dentist is an experience that people, young and old, generally dread, so every possible effort has been made to ensure a pleasant and comfortable experience every time. They have themed surgeries with TV screens on the ceilings to offer much-needed distractions (for both kids and adults) and all staff are trained to manage anxious and nervous patients. Family Dental Care Group The Family Dental Care Group was established in 2010 and is a sophisticated branded group of dental practices that provide high quality specialised and general dental treatment, at affordable rates. Eight years later, they have eight practices and have extended their footprint to both Jo’burg and Cape Town. The six in Durban are situated in Ballito, La Lucia, Durban North, Queensburgh, Waterfall and Hilton. The key to their success is a simple patientcentric approach. “We pride ourselves in putting the patient first by providing them with the best care, by the best dentists, using the best materials and equipment but still accepting medical aids as well as offering very reasonable cash rates. We also have an incredible and fully equipped in-house dental laboratory, which can save our patients time and money” says Dr Govender. All of their dentists have a special interest in Paediatric Dentistry. They offer orthodontics for both adults and children. A significant part of the business is cosmetic dentistry, with the dentists continually attending the latest courses and conferences to ensure that they are always cutting-edge. The types of cosmetic procedures can include full smile makeovers or minor aesthetic changes. They make use of Digital Smile Design, veneers, implants, crowns and Zoom! Teeth Whitening - the number one teeth whitening system in the world. All surgeries are equipped with world-class equipment including the use of 3D digital X-ray technology at particular branches, CAD CAM for in-office fabrication of crowns and other restorations, plus intraoral cameras. September is National Oral Health Month, aimed at raising awareness of the importance of oral health. According to a statement released by the South African Government late last year, they state that cavities and gum disease are two of the world’s most common health problems. Did you know 90% of South Africans experience gum disease at some point, as it ranks 7
second only to the common cold in terms of prevalence! Family Dental Care firmly believes in entrenching good oral hygiene habits from a young age to be continued throughout adulthood. Prevention is better than cure! It is essential to ensure consistent awareness of oral health as well as dispel any negative connotations associated with dental visits. To prevent issues in the future, it is essential for children to have regular visits to the dentist as soon as their first tooth appears. This not only prevents future issues but also allows your little ones to become comfortable with and build a good relationship with their dentist. This is true for people of all ages. To maintain optimum oral hygiene, it is advised to have regular dental check-ups at least every six months. Visit www.familydentalcare.co.za to find your closest branch.

Pan-Fried Honey Bananas
3 Ingredient Peanut Butter Cookies
These pan-fried bananas are caramelised in honey and cinnamon for a simple and delicious treat! These chewy, dense, peanut butter cookies are an unforgettable memory from my childhood.
Ingredients • 2 ripe bananas • 1 Tbsp oil or butter* • 2 Tbsp honey • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon • 1/8 tsp salt
Ingredients • 1 cup sugar • 1 cup peanut butter • 1 egg
Instructions 1. Remove the peels from the bananas and slice them 1/2-inch thick. 2. Set a non-stick skillet over medium to medium-high heat and add the oil or butter, honey, cinnamon, and salt. Stir to combine. 3. Add the banana slices, and fry for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, until golden and caramelised. Be sure to watch the heat and turn it down if it browns too quickly. You want enough heat to caramelise and brown the slices, but you don’t want them to burn. 4. Once the bananas are cooked you can enjoy them as is, or with marshmallow creme and peanut butter in a sandwich, in oatmeal or yogurt, over ice cream, and more. Enjoy! Recipe Notes* My favourite cooking fats for this recipe are coconut oil or butter, but you may use any neutral oil you prefer. If you have an electric stove, they tend to be less powerful than gas, so go with medium-high heat. If you have a more powerful and responsive gas stove, you can try medium heat. When cooking, check to make sure that the bananas are caramelising but not burning, and adjust the heat as needed.
Instructions Preheat the oven to 180°C. Stir the ingredients together until smooth. Scoop onto parchment or a silicone baking sheet. (Roll into 1” balls with your hands, if you do not have a scoop.) Press down with the back of a fork and then press again from the opposite direction, to form the criss-cross pattern on top. These cookies will not spread at all. You can bake the full recipe on a single tray if you would like. Bake for 12 minutes and then let cool on the tray for 1 to 2 minutes before removing to a wire rack to finish cooling. Store them in an airtight container. Source: www.barefeetinthekitchen.com. pheka

Making Sure Your Newborn Baby Can Hear The most critical years for learning speech and language begins at birth. Babies cannot tell us that they can’t hear, and without a newborn hearing screening assessment, hearing loss can be missed. While they may not understand the words, babies first respond to the tone. Thus, the effects of even a mild hearing loss on speech and language acquisition during the critical first two years of life can result in significant speech, language and learning delays. Children who are treated in a timely manner (before six months of age) may not exhibit developmental delays related to their hearing when they reach school age.
the measurement of the electrical aspects of physical hearing. The procedure and equipment most commonly used measure Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) which uses a very quick, non-invasive procedure, best conducted when the baby is sleeping. OAE testing records sound signals made by the cochlea, which is a structure of the inner ear, in response to sounds generated by the test equipment. A small rubber probe is placed in the baby’s ear canal and soft click sounds will be presented. A result of ‘PASS’ or ‘REFER for further testing’ is obtained.

How To Make Your Monday Meat Free
Did you know that eating meat has a detrimental impact on the environment? Reducing meat consumption can help delay climate change, reduce the use of valuable natural resources and even result in health benefits. It’s no wonder the campaign for Meat Free Monday has gained support worldwide.
options available from soya mince to soya sausages. • For meals like a stir fry substitute meat for tofu and egg and include more vegetables. • Experiment with vegetarian recipes such as frittatas or omelettes made with vegetables and eggs, vegetable curries, vegetable quiches etc. • Don’t think of meat as the main part of a meal. Half of your plate should be filled with vegetables and you can build on a meal idea with a meat substitute of your choice. • Replace processed meat in sandwiches with a low-fat cheese, boiled eggs or sugar free and salt free peanut butter.
The World Cancer Research Fund recommends that people should ‘eat no more than 500g (cooked weight) a week of red meat, such as beef, pork and lamb. Eat little, if any, processed meat, such as ham and bacon’. Practical recommendations to reduce meat intake include: • Include legumes such as beans, chickpeas Generally, people think of Monday as a and lentils as a protein source for meals. clean slate to start the week off well. Dr Des@Home: When Was Your Last Pap Test? Patients often want to know which tests they can do to pick up cancer. The answer is simple: start with doing your monthly breast examination and yearly Pap test. Women 39 years and older can add a mammogram, and women over 50 can have a colonoscopy to rule out colon cancer. This month is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. Cervical cancer is the third most common cancer and the fourth leading cause of death in women worldwide. The primary cause of this cancer is infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). Since cervical cancer is usually asymptomatic in the early stages, screening is important. It is one of the few cancers that can be easily detected at pre-malignancy phase. The screening test, which is known as the Pap test, is an effective method for early detection. During a Pap test, cells from the mouth of the cervix are collected with a brush, saved and sent off to the pathology
laboratory. The pathologist can pick up pre-malignant cells, HPV, bacterial and fungal elements. The treatment needed for abnormal cervical cell changes depends on whether you have mild, moderate or severe changes. Many women with mild changes don’t need treatment as the changes go back to normal on their own. This is usually confirmed by repeating the test after three months. For moderate to severe changes, your gynaecologist will do a biopsy during a procedure called colposcopy. LLETZ stands for large loop excision of the transformation zone. It’s also known as loop electrosurgical excision (LEEP) or loop diathermy. This is the most common treatment for abnormal cervical cells. It is a small procedure that can save your life! South Africans Deserve Complete, Comprehensive Family Medicine
How frustrating it is that despite the enormous cost of healthcare, we as South Africans often receive disconnected care. Caring for one’s family, ensuring that they get the best of care is non-negotiable for all of us. The sad reality is that we as South Africans have, over time, accepted the enormous deficiencies that exist in our medical system – both privately funded as well as state funded. Many households are contributing thousands of rands a month to their medical insurance companies in the hope that when they get sick they will be taken care of. The reality is that if you lack medical knowledge you will not be able to recognise the huge holes in care, even in our “plush upmarket private hospitals.” I am a physician who has worked for 12 years in Canada, and these holes have become obvious to me.
ONLY as cough and cold doctors is most inappropriate. Your GP should be qualified to manage most of your common chronic diseases. They should be screening for diseases at age appropriate intervals based on ethnicity and genetic risks. Preventing illness is their first objective. The second is to prevent disease progression and limiting heart attacks, kidney failure, etc., that are due to poorly managed chronic diseases. Appropriate screening of targeted populations for: Cervical cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, diabetes, hypertension, Ischaemic cardiac disease, etc., are all invaluable. This must be offered by your family doctor in order to promote and maintain yours and your family’s health. South Africans should not accept anything less!

Vaccinate Your Children
Not all childhood vaccines are covered by the government clinics – only the vaccines at birth, 6 weeks, 10 weeks and 14 weeks are identical to the private vaccines. Unfortunately the government clinics do not give the following vaccines: • Chicken Pox • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) • Hepatitis A • Meningococcal Meningitis These vaccines are given only privately from 9 months of age and most medical aids do pay for them. Children at crèche and preschool are presenting with chicken pox and mumps every month and last year I treated two patients with meningococcal meningitis. Hepatitis A is easy to pick up as it is transmitted hand to mouth. Recently there was a small outbreak of Diphtheria. Booster vaccines are available for diphtheria prophylaxis.

Experts Weigh In On ADD/ADHD Psychologist Paul Bushnell interviews mom of three and radio personality, Jane Linley-Thomas and Dr Yavini Reddy (Paediatric Neurologist at Ethekwini Hospital) on ADD/ADHD. Paul: Jane, tell us when and how your son was diagnosed with ADD? Jane: Both my sons have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. It has been a lengthy process that has seen both of them have extensive assessments at an assessment centre, and through school reports and a few different paediatric assessments. Paul: What were you advised to do? Jane: After a lot of research and teary conversations we went the medication route. This was not something we jumped into lightly; there were many nights of broken sleep and tossing and turning. The big problem was that, the more I fought the medication route, the more their confidence seemed to be dwindling in the classroom and on the playground. I could see them struggling with that fact that they couldn’t get things done.
story, I am reminded of one of the first things I was taught in educational psychology – that ruling out as many biological factors when making a diagnosis is so important. Dr Reddy – what is your advice to parents, educators and clinicians working in this area regarding brain scanning as a diagnosis tool? Dr Reddy: Routine brain scanning is not advised as ADHD is a functional problem not a structural problem of the brain. The brain scanning routinely available in South Africa only looks at structure not function. An EEG is an important investigation, especially if the response to ADHD medication is not great. Absence epilepsy (Petit-mal epilepsy) can present as problems with concentration and learning difficulties. Paul: I think taking a multi-disciplinary approach to diagnosis is so crucial. We are often in such a hurry to make a diagnosis so that we can start making everything better, that we sometimes miss some of the important clues. Like so many things in life, there is so much value in slowing the hard moments of our life down and considering all of the options before moving forward. So while, ADD and ADHD are real for so many people, we are also learning so much more about the brain and development.
Visit www.lovejlt.com and Paul: I know this is not true for every ADD www.bushell.co.za for more information. or ADHD diagnosis, because there are many spot-on diagnosis and treatment for the condition. But, what have you since discovered? Jane: My oldest son was not responding to the suggested medication, and my mother’s instinct started sensing that something wasn’t right. After a 24-hour EEG it was discovered that he actually has Petit Mal (silent epilepsy). He now takes medication for it twice a day, and is on a very low dose of the ADD meds. The results have been night and day. Paul: As a practitioner, when I hear your www.mumsmail.com

Empower your Children to Deal with a Crisis
Agnieszka Gryn, General Manager at Fidelity ADT’s Inland region, says as parents it is our responsibility to not only educate our children about safety, but to also give them the necessary tools to deal with a crisis.
They should never try and engage in conversation. They should speak only if spoken to and then try to keep their answers short and to the point. Encourage your children to try and get a good look at the criminal and memorise their physical details and clothing, as well as the vehicle they’re in. Listen for any names or other details that might help identify them later.
“The reality is that our children may witness a crime despite our best efforts to keep them protected,” Gryn says. “While we don’t want our children to live in fear, we do need to have frank conversations about Remind your children to try and remain what to do in a crisis situation.” calm and quiet if not threatened so the Quite simply, the same rules that apply to criminal can get what he or she wants and move off. adults need to be instilled in children. The first and golden rule is to not antagonise the criminal who is probably more scared than you are. You need to show them you are not a threat. Unless your child feels they are facing an imminent life-and-death situation, they should not fight back and readily give over any material possessions.
Gryn says these simple actions can often keep a child safe. He also reminds parents to constantly reinforce general safety for children. Source: www.adt.co.za.

Parents often feel disempowered when dealing with schools, encountering obstacles such as a lack of knowledge of school procedures and communication barriers. A study done by Kathlyn Kannapathi, lecturer at the Embury Institute for Higher Education, found that parental involvement programmes are an effective strategy for empowerment, allowing parents to become active participants in the learning process who are consulted and communicated with on important school issues. School-based parental involvement Kannapathi’s study took place at a marginalised primary school in Mariannhill, and saw parents and teachers of Grade 4 pupils partake in a number of workshops. The programme was designed for parents and school staff to work collaboratively towards identifying meaningful participation standards. An important focus of the programme was that empowerment was not a method imposed on parents, but rather a process of self-discovery through Est. 1994
collaborative dialogue. At the end of the programme it was evident that parents displayed three qualities: Consciousness: Parents had a clearer understanding of their role in education and the benefits of their involvement. Competence/Self-efficacy: Parents were taking active control of their own level of empowerment by implementing strategies that they were exposed to during the programme. Self-determination: The level of empowerment became evident as parents started asking questions and gave each other advice on how to deal with problems encountered during their own involvement practices. “For education to truly flourish in South Africa, it is not just up to our educators to make the difference. Rather, it is this shared relationship between parents and teachers that needs to be cultivated and nourished,” concludes Kathlyn. Source: www.embury.ac.za.

Setting Up SA’s Next Generation of Adults for Financial Success
South Africans’ financial literacy is currently ranked lowest in the world, according to a survey conducted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, in which 2 813 South Africans aged between 18 and 79 participated.
“With this in mind, we realised that it was crucial to educate young people on healthy financial habits before they enter adulthood and provide them with financial wellness tools for their futures,” says Metropolitan CSI Manager, Elsie Govender. The result is Kickstarz: a financial education programme that provides money management training with an entertaining and age-relevant twist. Aimed at Grade 11 learners, Kickstarz connects with this tough teen audience by giving them the chance to start their own sneaker companies (each with unique names and logos) and designing their very own pair of sneakers that they then market
to the rest of the school. In doing so, and through several interactive lessons, they learn financial basics from how to read a bank statement and how to plan and follow a budget, to more advanced issues like how to build up a good credit record and stay out of debt. Currently, an app is being developed to support the teaching of the Kickstarz lessons. On the final day of the programme, they get to display their sneaker designs and decide which was the best-performing ‘business’ in the programme. All members of the winning team walk away with a real pair of sneakers, made using their very own design. The programme not only teaches financial principles, but also other valuable skills such as teamwork and presentation skills, which are not necessarily taught through textbooks. Project Soul 2 Sole Donates 300 Pairs of New Shoes
It was a morning of big hugs, warm smiles and tears of joy recently as 300 learners from five schools in and around Ximba near Cato Ridge outside Durban each received a pair of brand new school shoes as part of the ongoing Project Soul 2 Sole. For many of the children, this is the first new pair of school shoes they have ever owned. In addition to a brand new pair of shoes, the pupils also received a pair of socks, a tin of shoe polish and an Uzwelo book bag. Spearheaded by KZN-based NPO, Blue Sky Society Trust, in conjunction with The Lion Match Group and Aramex South Africa, Project Soul 2 Sole has, for the past four years, made a phenomenal impact on the lives of some of KwaZulu-Natal’s most destitute children by distributing new and
pre-loved school shoes. “It truly astounds me that in 2018 there are some seven million children in Africa who have never owned a pair of new or second hand shoes,” explains Carla Geyser, founder of Blue Sky Society Trust. “The look in a child’s eyes, the smile on their face when they receive their first pair of school shoes is something hard to explain. We have a phenomenal group of people involved in this impactful project, to whom I am truly grateful!” Project Soul 2 Sole has tripled in size and reach over the past four years, with children in the North West province and the Eastern Cape now benefitting from over 16 000 preloved shoes thanks to the generosity of KZN pupils and parents. Science Experiment: Unbreakable Bubbles
Science question: How can you make bubbles last longer? Bubbles are made of gas (usually air) that is trapped between layers of soap and water. In this experiment, we’ll make (virtually!) unbreakable bubbles. Supplies needed: • 3 cups water • 1 cup dish detergent, not concentrated • ½ cup (120ml) corn syrup • ½ teaspoon rubber cement (optional) • Glass jar with lid • Spoon • Bubble wands The experiment: Combine the water, detergent, corn syrup and rubber cement in the glass jar. Lightly stir with the spoon. Allow the mixture to sit for at least 12 hours before use so the ingredients are fully mixed. Using the spoon, slowly stir the mixture before use. Use bubble wands to blow bubbles. Time how much longer the bubbles last and how less likely they are to break than ordinary
bubbles. The outcome: The soap bubbles were harder to pop than ordinary soap bubbles. Why it worked: Soap molecules are polarised: one side of the molecule loves water (called hydrophilic) and the other side hates water (called hydrophobic). The soap molecules arrange themselves as a bubble around the trapped air. Corn syrup and rubber cement increase the surface tension in the soap bubble, making these bubbles harder to pop than ordinary bubbles. Variations: • With a gloved hand see if you can catch and even pass the bubbles from person to person. • Bubbles often pop due to evaporation. Blow a bubble into a jar and put the lid on it. In a jar the bubble can last for a longer time. Tip: For the best bubbles, don’t shake the bubble solution. Old School Party Games
Chalk Tangle This outdoor Twister-inspired activity uses sidewalk chalk and homemade dice to take the fun outside.
Materials: At least 6 colours of sidewalk chalk and dice. With sidewalk chalk, create a grid six squares across and six squares down. Randomly colour the squares with six different colours, making six squares of each colour. With one of the dice, colour each side of the die a different colour with chalk. Participants all start standing in the colour of their choice. The die roller will call out a body part and then roll the die to determine which colour will receive that body part. Participants scramble to comply with the instructions without falling over.
Human Knot Use group participants’ limbs wrapped together to create a life-size puzzle that requires giggles to solve. Five or more kiddos works well and fewer than 10 is best. Have the kids group together (not orderly, it works best if this ‘hand grab’ is chaotic). Have the children raise their left hands and grab another raised hand. Then repeat with their right hands. Everyone should now be bunched up together, holding hands with two other people. They are one giant human knot! Without letting go of each other’s hands, the kids need to figure out how to unknot the human pretzel that they formed. They will need to climb under and over each other in order to detangle the knot. In the end, the hands should make a giant circle. Source: 101 Kids Activities that are the Bestest, Funnest Ever! By Holly Homer & Rachel Miller.
Tip: Dip your chalk into water before drawing with in on the sidewalk; the colours will be brighter this way. Modification for younger kids: Make shapes smaller and closer together. Instead of reaching and staying still during the game, smaller kids can try to jump to the colour called. This is a great activity for kids learning left from right. It will also help your children develop stronger core muscles as they balance on all fours. Modification for older kids: Create a second die that has body parts listed: right arm, left arm, right leg, left leg, head and so on. Roll both dice to play the game. The kids have to match both the colour and the body part.
