I was told at the beginning of last year that I would need to apply for an unabridged birth certificate for my daughter to apply for high school in 2013. So I immediately called a company that assists with these types of applications and was told that they would charge R350 to take care of this on my behalf. They faxed me the paperwork I needed to fill in and I promptly filed it in the back of my 2011 diary (my “to do” section). I discovered the blank forms, still in the “to do” section last month as I was replacing my old diary with the new one (oops...)

Last week I went to “Home Affairs” (what an awful, seedy name for a government department) and applied for the unabridged birth certificate (only R75 when you do it yourself). I was told that it could take anywhere between 6 to 8 months to arrive due to the backlog of applications – seems I wasn’t the only negligent parent. I also applied for three passport renewals at the same time (R400 each vs the R650 each if you apply through the documentation company). I spent about an hour there but saved over R1000 in fees I would have paid to a document service.

Yesterday I received an SMS (only 7 days after applying) to tell me that the unabridged birth certificate was ready for collection! WOW! I am super impressed. Someone cynically suggested I temper my enthusiasm until after checking that the details are in fact correct, as her child’s had the wrong parents’ names on it...but I will remain positive.
For tuition and all your mosaic, glass and pottery supplies Come to our Clay & Craft Café, let your kids choose their own piece of bisque to paint from hundreds of options available. Or pop in without the kids for some “me time” and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and indulge in a slice of cake, while you paint your bisque masterpiece.
So here’s hoping the passport renewals are ready for collection soon too, that way I can kill two birds with one stone.
Alice xxx P.S. Today I received a letter from my daughter’s prospective high school - she’s been accepted (without the unabridged birth certificate)!

Laid Back Life For Children: BOOKS: • My First Book of Southern African Ocean Life. Another in the “My First Book” series, Southern African Ocean Life is a wonderful addition to your child’s home or school library. Over 50 different sea creatures, familiar to South African waters, are depicted, one per page. Each animal carries a short, interesting description (in four different languages), a picture, and a diagram of where it swims in the ocean. A key at the beginning of the book gives a succinct description of what to expect on each page. Published by Random House Struik. Cost: R90. • Creepy Crawly Caterpillar & the Butterfly Inside. This very sweet book tells the story of Creepy Crawly Caterpillar who’s fed up with who she is and wants to be different. One by one, each of her friends tells her that, in time, she will change and that she should simply be patient and happy with who she is now. Sure enough, Creepy Crawly does change! The book contains meditation and breathing exercises, and some yoga postures that relate to the story. Written by Tamar Dakes and illustrated by Joanne Marsden. Published by Beaming Kids. Cost: R90. DVDs: • Kung Fu Panda 2. Life is by no means easy since Po Ping became the Dragon Warrior. In this adventure, Po must fight off an evil Peacock to save China from the demise of kung fu. While doing this he must also find himself, work out where he came from and find inner peace. Lots of fun and action with friends in tow. A NuMetro release.
For Adults: BOOKS: • One Day at a Time is the true story of Susan Lewis whose mother died when she was only nine. Thinking it to be in her best interests, Susan’s father sends her to a boarding school which she absolutely hates. The story shows Susan growing up and dealing with puberty without a mother, making friendships, meeting boys and getting into more and more trouble in a desperate attempt to be sent back home to live with her father and younger boy. Touching but not mushy, One Day at a Time is an easy and engaging read. Published by Random House Struik. Cost: R115. DVDs: • Bridesmaids. Annie (Kristen Wiig) is appointed maid of honour for her best friend’s wedding. Annie’s working class life is a bit of a mess but she is spurred on to do her best (or worst!) for her friend when a posh friend enters the picture and tries to take over the role of maid of honour. As the competition heats up Annie’s antics go from bad to worse, making for some hilarious viewing. A sweet romance with an Irish cop adds to the mix. Very enjoyable. A NuMetro release. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has 1 copy of each book & DVD to give away. Visit www.mumsmail.com to enter.

Dad’s Life Simon Says ... My Daughter’s Abandoned Pets World hunger photos are grim, and homeless shelter pics might elicit a tear, but nothing is as pathetic as my daughter’s abandoned pets. I weep copiously at every unwanted hamster, gaping goldfish or whimpering puppy. “Daddy daddy he’s too adorable, please, please, PLEASE!” And as soon as it’s cage-cleaning time, the affections grow cold. We started with the Russian dwarf hamsters. After a month the little beasts were using their wheel to squeak SOS distress signals, so I took them to my studio. They multiplied and replenished my studio with 39 Russian relatives. Then came the goldfish. Four large red mouths gaping and gawking at her. One of them leapt out of the bowl in response to five hours of R&B, and her reaction to this suicide was a torrent of tears. I hurriedly took the remaining fish away but not before a solemn funeral in the loo with candles, incense and Rhianna bleating “Final Goodbye” in the background. Then a rapid succession of SPCA adoptions: a mangy mutt with a missing tooth she called General, a neurotic female cat named Ms Bobbitt that clawed my groin every time I said “John”, and MJ the chameleon. She kept MJ on her cerise pink bedspread. After valiant attempts at camouflage it grew very ill and ceased to do its moonwalk.
Have you not had enough of this crime? If so, why not then use your cell phone to help fight it and keep your hands clean? Your eyes and cell are your only involvement. See how many other residents in your area are already taking part. JOIN THEM! Let’s fight this crime together!
With 147 unwanted pets I am looking after within the walls of my interior design studio, I have closed my business and changed my name to Dr Dolittle, as clearly there is little time to dolittle else but attend to the needs of Michaela’s abandoned pets’ zoo. Submitted By: Simon Stengel.

I want to ride to the ridge where the west commences; I can’t look at hobbles and I can’t stand fences; Don’t fence me in. Cole Porter: Don’t Fence Me In. Finally we arrive. We are surrounded by nature as we survey our little patch of wilderness. Well maybe it’s not the wilderness, it’s just a stretch of river which we plan to fish for the day. But for the next twelve hours or so it’s our “wilderness”. We have great expectations of the adventures that lie ahead. While preparing our gear we daydream about the monstersized fish that we’ll conquer today, and hopefully we’ll have the good fortune to be injured or scarred in the tussle! A trophy of the day’s exploits. I find it sad that we have traded our spirit of adventure for mortgages, fancy cars and suburban living. What happened to the little boy that used to dream of conquests, adventure and danger? Truth be told, we can all enjoy our little patch of wilderness almost any time we wish to. We are blessed to live in an area that boasts not only easy access to the outdoors but also the climate that allows us to get out there and get dirty.

Dad’s Life Woodworking Hobby Woodworking is a hobby that people of all ages and professions can do. Just a few basic tools and some guidelines for simple projects will easily get you started on this rewarding pastime. Neil Knight, who is a keen woodworker in his spare time, has the following tips: • Get a few basic tools to begin with. These include a saw, plane, chisel, vice and a workbench. • Subscribe to a woodworking magazine. “The USA magazines tend to be better than the UK ones,” advises Neil. These magazines contain step-by-step projects that make it easy for the user to follow. • The Internet is a wonderful resource when it comes to finding and ordering supplies like books, DVDs and tools. • Purchase wood from proper timber merchants, e.g. Country Woods. Local hardware stores will not give a good selection. There are 30 to 40 different types of timber to choose from and you pay per metre. Neil’s favourite timber is American Walnut. • Join the Woodcrafters’ Association and learn from fellow members. • Start with simple projects such as making a breadboard. From there you can branch into or specialise in different areas of woodwork cabinet making (making furniture), carpentry (e.g. built-in cupboards), wood turning (e.g. using a lathe to make bowls), restorations, reproductions or period pieces. Woodworking provides “concrete” pleasure (a tangible, finished object), is creative (often very different to how we spend our normal working days) and gives the opportunity to draw out the natural beauty and smells of timber. Business Life Reasons for Insurance Claims Rejections
KWAZULU-NATAL SO CIETY FOR THE BLIND
Defective Design or Construction Homeowners should not confuse an insurance contract with a guarantee or warranty. If there is a defect in the design of your home or it is poorly constructed, or both, your insurance claims may be rejected. For example, if your boundary wall was defectively built your insurer will be entitled to reject the claim. This would remain the case even if the event that destroyed the wall was sudden and unforeseen. So, regardless of whether a freak storm or flood destroyed the wall, if it was poorly designed or built, the insurer would be unlikely to pay out. So, if you are buying a home, make sure that you have it thoroughly inspected. You need to know if any of the structures are not built to regulation and what it will cost you to remedy the problem. Does your Home’s Security Match your Theft Policy? A burglary claim on your householders’ insurance policy may be rejected if your home security does not meet your insurer’s minimum security requirements. As a general rule, most insurers’ security requirements include some or all of the following: • Burglar bars on all opening and louvretype windows. • Security gates on all sliding doors, or at least a second lock that is either a keyoperated locking bolt or locking pin, fitted at a 90-degree angle to the existing door lock. • An alarm system linked to a 24-hour control room with an armed reaction unit. • Security gates in front of all opening external doors. Business Life Teaching French in South Africa: International Women’s Day 8 March Martina Michel-Smith, a Mount Edgecombe resident, is a French teacher at Crawford Prep La Lucia. Martina has taught at the school for 13 years and in fact was responsible for creating the French curriculum for Crawford. She currently teaches French as a third language to 240 children in Grades 4 to 7, and also conducts private extra lessons for children of all ages. Martina was born in Bethune, a little town in the north of France. Very quiet and unchanging, the town of 14 000 reported only one questionable death in 60 years – and that was a suicide! Martina studied English at university which qualified her for a number of jobs requiring bilingualism. One of those was as a ground hostess for Air France, a company with which she was employed for 20 years. Fundraiser for: Ocean View House It was during her tenure with Air France Primary School. “I had the pleasure of using Better Earth Dishwashing Liquid and Better Earth Natural Aromas Air Freshener,” said Brenda Daniels, subeditor of Mum’s Mail. “The dishwashing liquid smells absolutely beautiful and I found that it cut the grease very well on oily dishes.” The lovely smell can be attributed to the combination of Eucalyptus Globulus (Blue Gum) leaf oil and Cymbopogon Schoenanthus (Lemongrass) oil and other natural ingredients. Like the dishwashing liquid, Better Earth Natural Aroma’s Air Freshener releases a fresh smell that is harmless to you and the environment. “The spray got rid of bad odours very quickly, without the choking, sharp smell you can get from normal air fresheners,” said Brenda. “And the aroma had a calm, ‘woody’ smell to it that reminded me of a beauty spa.”

Home Life Entertaining Al Fresco
The Cushion Co.
For a sensational dessert idea, decorate your table with potted strawberry plants. Entertaining is about getting a stunning look with minimal fuss so if the strawberries aren’t in full fruit - cheat! Buy a punnet and place the strawberries under the leaves! For the centre pot place a candle in the pot and surround the candle with loose strawberries. Serve strawberries with meringues and ice cream. Simple! Gorgeous! No fuss! Freeze strawberries in ice cubes. Serve wasabi biscuits with home-made pesto. Serve cheese rolls mixed with chopped parsley and chopped basil. Bring garden accessories onto the table for a fun Al Fresco lunch. Take a good look at a trug. The divisions allow all sorts to be placed in them – from decorations to functional knives, forks, mayonnaise, chilli, jam etc. Take bottles and place a single rose in each one. This trug, holding everything you need for a meal, can be placed directly on the table making it very easy for you as the host/hostess to create a great ambiance and it is very welcoming and casual for friends. Another idea from the potting shed is to use small terracotta pots as vases. Line with a polystyrene cup and fill with greenery - a small cabbage, chillies, etc. Look for different colours of veggies and different textures or go with the same veggie repeated at every place setting. Use a new trowel set as salad servers. Let your mind wander and stand in the garden shed seeing your everyday garden accessories in a new light. Have fun!

As a teacher and parent, Lucy says that Earth Hour is a fabulous opportunity to do some preparation in the weeks leading up to the event in order to make it a worthwhile learning experience. Simple lessons to teach:
‘
• Keep our planet clean by recycling rubbish and cutting down on pollution by not using toxic chemicals and by reducing our use of fossil fuels. • Cut down on resource use by switching off items at home and conserving power and water. • Eat local and seasonal food and be aware of wasteful packaging. • Increase biodiversity by planting indigenous plants and by starting a permaculture garden. These are all things that young children can easily become involved in on a daily basis. Plan an Earth Hour event with family and friends such as a candlelit dinner and make a pledge to take better care of our precious planet. Useful contacts: • Y.O. Puppet Co. - an energy-packed show for children three to eight years that emphasises the importance of caring for our planet and introduces permaculture. Home Life Ants, Ants … Everywhere! Due to the recent extreme heat and lack of rain ants of all varieties seem to be in and around our homes and gardens in their droves! It’s easy to grab that can of “Doom” and kill them all, but before you do that, consider the toxic chemicals you are spraying in and around your home and yourself. Read the label on the back of the spray can and take note of the harmful and dangerous chemicals and warning signs! Here are two “greener” options which really work, which you can make at home, are pretty safe and which cost a fraction of the price of toxic commercial pesticides: Ant bait is effective because the ants will take it back to their nest so that you can get to the root of the problem and stop the colony from breeding. Using a small pot, dissolve two teaspoons of borax together with four teaspoons of sugar in 120ml of water over medium heat. Stir for about two minutes, remove when syrupy and allow to cool. Pour the cooled mixture into a container and seal with a lid to store. Pour a small amount of the ant bait mixture into a bottle cap/lid and place on the floor or area where you often see trails of ants. They will soon find it, and lap it up. Normally, within 10 days to two weeks, the ants will have disap- Rug Doctor Pro Professional cleaning peared. CAUTION: Keep out of reach of small children and pets. - home or office Another safe way to keep ants and other insects at bay is to wipe down cupboards, windowsills and surfaces with an insectrepelling essential oil such as tea-tree, eucalyptus, oil of cloves, peppermint or citronella. Home Life G.Raffe Baby Decor When she became a new mum in 2010, Cherese Duffield scoured the baby décor and accessory stores in search of unique, bespoke and quirky items that would welcome her new son into the world the way she wanted to. A little overcome by her experience, Cherese decided it was time to create one place where mums could choose what they wanted in their baby’s nursery. And so G.Raffe Baby Décor was born. The store started out as a showroom in Durban North but Cherese soon realised that many mums didn’t have time outside of work to shop. After months of planning, G.Raffe Baby Décor was excited to announce the launch of their new website www.graffebabydecor.co.za. Healthy Life March Awareness Days TB Awareness Month & TB Awareness Day (24 March): Most people who are infected with the TB bacteria do not develop active TB. These people therefore have no symptoms and are not infectious. The immune system controls the infection by forming walls around the bacteria. This inactivates the bacteria, but does not kill them. They can lie dormant inside these walls for years. In many people, TB bacteria remain inactive for a lifetime, but in others, especially those with weak immune systems, the bacteria may become active and cause active TB disease. (Health24.com).

The new Bill of Rights was instituted in 1994 and in 1996 on this day the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) was launched. (Awesome South Africa). World Water Day (22 March): The primary aim of this campaign is to raise awareness among South Africans about the role of water in social and economic development including the need to get citizens to change their attitudes towards water use. The campaign emphasises water conservation as one of the major interventions that South Africans need to appreciate if we are to guarantee water security and availability for the country.

Healthy Life What is Low Muscle Tone? Muscle tone is the amount of tension or resistance to movement in a muscle. Low muscle tone is used to describe muscles that have less tension and feel floppy. A child with low muscle tone requires a lot more effort in order to maintain a good sitting or standing posture and, as a result, tires very easily, battles to focus and appears to be lethargic. The child with low tone may also experience difficulties with gross motor skills such as balance, hopping, skipping and fine motor skills such as drawing, colouring and cutting. They may appear to be fidgety and restless as they move around in their chair to build up tone. Unfortunately we live in an age in which technological advancements have resulted in children increasingly becoming involved in sedentary activities e.g. watching television, playing computer/video/iPad games and playing with cellular phones. Experts estimate that up to 70% of children today have low muscle tone. There also seems to be an increase in visual problems due to unmonitored screen time. Warm-up activities may help to activate the muscles temporarily. Prior to doing homework a child can jump on a mini trampoline, which may help with maintaining a good sitting posture instead of slouching. Squeezing and rolling playdough before writing may help your child to maintain an efficient pencil grip and write for a longer period of time. Other useful warmup activities include: wheelbarrow walks, skipping with a skipping rope, tug-of-war, ball games, arm wrestles or digging in the garden. Your child’s Occupational Therapist will provide you with a home programme which contains special exercises for low tone. Consistency and commitment are the keys to success!

Healthy Life Ultraviolet Therapy in Dermatology Light therapy or phototherapy consists of exposure to daylight or specific wavelengths of light using lasers, light-emitting diodes or fluorescent lamps usually controlled with various devices. The light is administered for a prescribed amount of time as well as at a calculated dose. UVB phototherapy refers to irradiation with short wave ultraviolet radiation. This ultraviolet radiation works at a wavelength of 311nm. This form of light therapy is referred to as narrowband therapy because the light bulbs release a small range of ultraviolet light. UV therapy has been used to treat many dermatological conditions. The therapy works by reducing inflammation on the skin. It also suppresses the immune system. Therefore, conditions that are immune mediated, benefit greatly from this form of therapy. The skin conditions that are commonly treated with UV therapy include: • Eczema/dermatitis • Psoriasis • Vitiligo • Certain skin cancers • Lichen planus • Alopecia/hair loss • Acne vulgaris.

Healthy Life Middle Ear Infections An ear infection is one of the most common health problems for young children. During a cold, sinus or throat infection, the Eustachian tube (the tube running from the back of the nose into the middle ear) often gets blocked, making it difficult to equalise air pressure in the middle ear. As a result, a sticky fluid collects in the middle ear, and when infected with bacteria, results in a middle ear infection (often termed “glue ear”). The production of fluid and pus causes pressure build-up in the ear, which is painful. The most common age for middle ear infections is between six months and two years. Symptoms may include (but not be limited to) fever, irritability or drowsiness, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, headache and loss of balance. Younger children might tug their ears or poke their fingers inside. Sometimes ear infections are “silent” and don’t cause any specific symptoms. Ear infections can cause a temporary decrease in hearing, and recurrent ear infections are often associated with varying degrees of hearing loss. This type of hearing loss may lead to behavioural, linguistic and educational difficulties. In the case of middle ear infections, or even suspected infections, your child should be assessed and treated by a GP or ENT. Treatment for middle ear infections usually involves pain medication, eardrops and occasionally antibiotics. Grommets or pressure equalisation tubes may be recommended to release the fluid should the infection be chronic or recurrent. Follow-up examination by your doctor post-infection is also recommended to ensure a clear and uninfected middle ear. Should you be concerned about possible associated hearing loss, see an Audiologist. Contact: Lauren & Kara, Thompson & Hoffman Audiology Inc., 031 – 208 1014.

Healthy Life Save Our Ears, Save Our Hearing!
DR IMRAAN JHETAM MB. ChB (Natal), FCDerm (SA)
The day has come for us all to start taking care of our ears the same way we care for the rest of our bodies. When looking for a nutritional supplement do we not want the best? So why do we not do the same for our ears? We choose inferior products depending on price and have no knowledge about the impact that hearing problems can have on our physical and social wellbeing. More and more children, from a very young age are having grommets inserted as a result of repetitive ear infections. Once hearing has been damaged there is no quick fix. So now the time has come for mums to take up arms against ear infections, ear problems and swimmers’ ears. New innovative ear care technology is finally here and making an impact on those chronic repetitive ear infections, with a range of specialised ear plugs from Cirrus to address specific problems. They include: BioEars (for water and noise), ClearEars (water absorbing) and EarHurts (for soothing ear discomfort). “My family are big users of earplugs so I was delighted to try out the earplugs from Cirrus,” said Brenda Daniels of Mum’s Mail. “BioEars silicone earplugs really are the best when it comes to blocking out noise (in my case a snoring husband and barking dogs!). The silicone is comfortable and easy to use and can be moulded to fit the shape of your ear. My daughter is prone to ear infections so will use EarHurts (the infused all-natural ingredients help to soothe ear discomfort) next time her ears trouble her.” Source: Cirrus, 012 - 548 5745, penny@chpsa.com. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has 2 packs of Cirrus earplugs (including BioEars, ClearEars & EarHurts) to give away.

Healthy Life Why Children’s Needs are Greater
Maxine Grimett
Counselling Psychologist
Children go through phenomenal growth and development during their early years. They produce more than a billion new cells each day and it takes a lot of nutrients to support this rapid growth. Young tissues and organ systems need energy and the right balance of nutrients to develop properly. For example, children’s immature immune systems are constantly exposed to bacteria and viruses, and many nutrients have been shown to support immune system response. This is also a time when cognitive skills and personalities are developing and scientific studies have found links between levels of certain nutrients and mental performance and mood. Rapid physical growth and mental development during childhood and adolescence require an increased supply of both energy and nutrients to keep the body’s metabolic pathways running smoothly. Because young people’s metabolic rates are on average so high, nutrient abundance and balance are particularly essential during these early stages of life. It is also vital that children acquire the right dietary behavioural patterns so that good food habits will continue through adult life. Source: Lesley and Dennis Banks, 031 – 564 4200, 083 654 2840.

Healthy Life What to Do in an Emergency Most parents feel they don’t have the skills to cope in an emergency and that someone else would do a better job. But did you know that brain damage can kick in after only four minutes without oxygen? By doing CPR, therefore, you can keep a child’s brain oxygenated until the ambulance gets there. Family members, friends and caregivers all need to learn these very easy skills and start them as soon as someone has no signs of life. A sign of life would be coughing, breathing and moving. If someone does not have these signs, CPR can only make it better, never worse. Remember that you can only go on to deal with other first-aid emergencies like bleeding once you have started CPR to restore their signs of life. Think of yourself as their human ventilator. IF YOU STOP, SO WILL THEY. How you can promote the chain of survival in children: • Prevent accidents. Make your home a safe place. Most reasons why children need resuscitation are accident related and not medical. • Learn how to do CPR. It will take as little as two hours of your time. Get together with your mates, have a cup of tea and practice on a CPR doll. Learn how to do hand-only CPR. You don’t have to put yourself at risk of having to deal with infected body fluids. • Learn the emergency numbers to phone. 112 is already programmed on every cell phone. It will work if the phone is locked or has no air time. Contact: Sister Robyn Armstrong, Choice Care training, 031 – 782 1130, 082 707 5515, choicecare@ionet.co.za, www.choicecare.co.za.

Healthy Life A Dangerous Combination: Alcohol and Energy Drinks
Declare War on unwanted Fat and Cellulite
The Association for Dietetics in South Africa (ADSA) says the growing practice of downing energy drinks as mixers with alcohol should be avoided at all costs. Says Berna Harmse, Registered Dietician and President of ADSA, “Mixing energy drinks with alcohol can prolong the drinking session by keeping the person awake longer. This can result in a greater intake of alcohol and an increased chance of serious damage from alcohol.” Drinkers may think that caffeine counteracts the adverse effects of alcohol, but it does not. Says Harmse, “People who combine energy drinks with alcohol underestimate their true level of drunkenness - a state of mind that can be labelled ‘being a wide-awake drunk.’ They think that they are sober, but they are not.” Harmse says they may then tend to binge drink which may make them vulnerable to sexual assault or driving while intoxicated. Scientists have also blasted myths that energy drinks containing high quantities of caffeine combat alcohol impairment, confirming instead that the caffeine only reduces alcohol-induced drowsiness, but not the actual impairment. Says Harmse, “The trouble is this: energy drinks are an upper. They increase your heart rate and make you ready to spring into action. Conversely, alcohol is a depressant, or a downer. Thus, when you combine the two it can have seriously adverse effects on your heart and body.” Overconsumption of alcohol is a risk to health and to society. Practices that help drinkers to drink more have potential to increase this risk. The practice of combining alcohol and energy drinks should therefore never be condoned or supported. Beautiful Life Look Hot, Feel Cool this Summer! I absolutely love Summer. It makes me feel fresh and alive. But, let’s face it, Durban Summer can be a scorcher which can make dressing tricky! Less is definitely more: • Wear loose dresses with beautiful sandals. • A growing trend is seeing ladies wear gorgeous bikinis under a beautiful loose dress, a long necklace and a hat. • One of the key trends is to wear white on white. Create interest by combining different textures. A cost-effective way to update this trend and your wardrobe is to go on a “Shopping & The City” group consultation. • Opt for natural fabrics such as cottons and linens. Keep this in mind when wearing underwear as well (avoid nylon). Visit www.lizaclifford.com for beautiful underwear. • Wear strappy T-shirts with beautiful shorts (plain or patterned) and slip slops with perfectly manicured toenails. • If you want to wear a lace camisole and are afraid to show the “bingo wings” then opt to wear a short sleeve or 3/4 length mesh vest over (Bodissox have amazing plain vests in neutral colours from R260). • Carry a small umbrella and a beautiful Chinese fan in your handbag for those emergency sunny days! • A hot tip from Brigit Filmer Spa & Skin (www.brigitfilmer.com - have a Brazilian wax to make you feel cooler). • It’s so important to moisturise in Summer. Wear a light body lotion. Cuccio Natural Lyte is an ultra-sheer body butter designed to be used in our humid weather. Price: R120 for 237ml. Available at Brigit Filmer Spa & Skin. Beautiful Life Let Your Bra Determine Your Outfit - Not Vice Versa This is the view of Liz Clifford of Professional Bra Fitting Studio. But with so many sizes, colours and types where does a woman begin? And how do you know if a bra is a good fit? Start with a professional bra fitting, advises Liza. If properly measured, a wellfitted bra should then sit snugly in the band. There will be no breast spilling over or under the bra, side “wings” should be scooped into the cup and straps should never fall off (if they do this means the bra band is too big, not the straps too loose). If you have back fat this can’t, unfortunately, be hidden with a bra. There are lots of styles of bras, with new ones developed every season. The two basic styles are plunges and balconettes and then there are combinations of the two. Plunging bras have a deep V and are suitable for low neck lines where cleavage exposure is required. Balconette bras have a push-up effect and often give your breasts a rounded appearance (the latter needs to be the correct size for it to work effectively). Minimising bras are meant to make the breast appear smaller. While this is achieved, it does not allow for much lift. And when it comes to colours, “wearing a pretty floral or a seasonal colour bra which allows for a peek of the strap or a low armhole, is nicer than seeing a practical, boring bra,” says Liza. Important tip: DO NOT use a white bra under white clothing. Black is better than a translucent white bra in this case. Beautiful Life Living the Single Life Being single, with or without children, in South African society is a difficult place to be. Socialising for singles, too, is a challenge. So where do singles go to meet others? Mum’s Mail spoke to four single people, three women and one man, all in their 30s and 40s, two of whom have children, about the subject. Challenges of being single: • Being over 30 and having children makes it difficult to meet a suitable partner. • Single dads tend to go to their mums for support, single mothers to each other. Hence the two don’t meet! • Burden of responsibility falls on your shoulders alone. • Couples may exclude single/divorced friends. • In South Africa in particular there is a stigma attached to being single. • In South Africa there are very few good dating agencies. • Very mixed South African society makes it difficult to meet compatible partners. • Financial constraints. • No male figurehead for sons of single mums. • Many people in their 20s travelled overseas and returned attached. Suggestions of places to socialise: • Barnyard Theatre. • Restaurants (e.g. Livingston’s, Mamma Luciano’s). • Sports clubs (e.g. squash, tennis). • Invitations to go out with groups of friends. “You have to put yourself out there,” said one single mum. “Say yes to every invitation, even if it’s outside your comfort zone.” (This mum is currently engaged to be married!). On the whole though, according to those interviewed, there is very little available for single people. Single readers – what is your experience? Send your comments to editor@mumsmail.com.

Beautiful Life Bella Day Spa I was recently invited to experience an Esse Balancing Facial at Bella Day Spa in Hillcrest. Located just off Old Main Road, Bella Day Spa is situated at 2 Lucas Drive (which is the side road close to the Focus on the Family offices). Although Bella Day Spa is quite compact, it is well laid out and its size leads to a cosy, rather than claustrophobic, feeling. With the global move towards everything “green” and “organic” I was keen to see what all the fuss was about. And I can confirm that Esse certainly delivers! The fresh smell, coupled with the faint tingling sensation throughout the facial ensured I knew that the products were working, albeit gently. Lesley is very knowledgeable and explains what the products are for during the facial. What I liked most was that she massages firmly – there is nothing worse than a “gentle” facial massage – I want to feel that my skin has been exfoliated and cleansed! Lesley also treated me to a hand and foot massage while the mask was working its magic, and the neck and upper back massage was bliss. Needless to say, I was hooked on Esse instantly, and left the salon armed with a very reasonably priced gel cleanser (a foaming, tingling wash that deep cleanses without drying and smells like peppermint), an exfoliator (that smells deliciously like citrus) and a moisturiser (a rich moisturiser for dry skin, yet it leaves no oily residue on your face). I love the packaging and the cleanser is re-fillable (a huge cost saver)! Call 031 - 765 3385 to book your appointment or e-mail lesley@belladayspa.co.za or visit www.belladayspa.co.za for more info. Tiny Life Strollers: Which One is Best?
Sister Arlette Blaylock P.R. No. 8812543
Choosing a stroller is dependent on three things: size of your boot, kind of lifestyle you have and your budget.
Now at the Hillcrest Day Clinic (opp Post Office), Nqutu Road, on Tuesdays & Thursdays.
Said Bronwyn Bath of Fit4Health, “I would definitely suggest going the jogger route and not the regular four-wheel stroller. Joggers are lightweight and turn on a ticky so to speak. They fold up easily and the wheels can be removed with a split pin release. They can handle almost all terrain from the city to going on a hike and are very durable. They have everything a regular stroller has and more.

Having said this, the price of a jogger can be pricey and can vary from around R4000 to R8000, whereas the cost of a regular stroller can vary from around R500 to R2000.” “Regarding the regular four-wheel stroller there are many brands to choose from but in my opinion the top few are Chicco, Maclaren, Pego-Prego, BOB and Jeep. They all offer three-wheel options too but to use for all-terrain running and hiking stroller training, BOB and Jeep Joggers are the best. BOB joggers come in a variety of styles. If you have one baby to push around, you’ll have the most flexibility of course. But BOB has many stroller designs that accommodate two children as well.”

Tiny Life Nurture-Now Nurture-Now’s mission is to empower parents, enrich their children, and help both reach their full potential through education, support, encouragement, and communication. It is headed by Dana Grace Quagliariello, Family Support Specialist, certified Infant Massage Instructor, Doula, Childbirth Educator, and Primary School Teacher. Nurture-Now’s Infant Massage course teaches parents how to massage their babies with simple techniques that support the bonding and attachment process and help with relaxation and communication in the early months. Among the many benefits, it also aids infant digestion, colic, sleeping patterns, and muscle, sensory, and system development. A Labour Doula provides emotional and physical support to a pregnant woman before, during and after labour and delivery. She offers tools for labour that can ease pain as well as reduce the need for medication, episiotomies, and Caesarean sections. She takes time to understand birthing hopes and preferences, answers questions, and remains in contact with the mother (and partner) to ensure maximum support is achieved. Post-natal Doulas assist new mothers with a variety of everyday needs so she can tend to personal care, have special time with her new baby, and adjust to life at home with greater ease. This includes breastfeeding support, housekeeping, cooking, food shopping, laundry, and newborn/sibling care. Tiny Life Reading Matter for Toddlers: The Value of Story Books
Water & Life School of
SWIMMING Large heated pool Open all seasons
Picture story books play an important role in the life of a young child. They develop children’s interest in the pictures or stories read to them and stimulate their speech and reading skills so that they eventually learn to read easily.
Small classes held in a safe nurturing environment by a qualified instructor
The ability to read with ease and insight is the basis for the formal learning process. Hence it is vital to stimulate these skills from infancy. A child is naturally inquisitive and is intensely interested in pictures and stories. Parents should therefore cash in on this natural interest.

Parents who regularly read to their children and read with them will know their interests and needs and be guided by their choice of books and stories. Story books with pictures give parents the opportunity to stimulate the development of practically all their children’s modalities. Their speech and language ability and understanding, visual and auditory perception and cognitive skills will be continually stimulated while they look at pictures or hear stories. Magazines, picture books and story books are the means whereby children experience wonderful learning opportunities, expand their field or experience and enter the marvellous world of the written word. So do make time to read to your little one. A child’s interest in books is initially stimulated by the fact that his parents look at and discuss pictures with him while he is still a baby or toddler. Allow him to describe the pictures for himself and to compare them with objects and actions in everyday life.

Tiny Life Is Baby Getting Enough?
DOLPHINATICS Swimming Academy
Mothers are often concerned that they are not producing enough milk for their babies. Here are some pointers on how to tell if baby is getting enough: • A wellfed baby is generally content after feeds, except if they’re sensitive to something you’re eating. Babies go through growth spurts around seven to ten days, two to three weeks, five to six weeks, three months and six months, and may then want to “feed all the time”. Make sure you are eating and drinking enough and your supply will adapt to meet baby’s needs. • Nappies: Breastfed babies can have a dirty nappy with every feed, or in the first six weeks should have at least three to five stools a day. Look at the colour of baby’s stools. A mustard-coloured, yellowish, “seedy” stool means that baby is getting enough of the rich hind milk. If it’s green once in a while, don’t be too concerned. If it’s green all the time, it may mean that baby is getting too much of the watery fore-milk, or is not getting enough. Baby should also have at least four really wet/heavy nappies in 24 hours. • Weight: It is normal for babies to lose up to 10% of their birth weight in the first 10 days, but baby should have gained back birth weight by three weeks latest. Thereafter it’s normal for babies to gain 250 to 400g weekly, but 125g is the minimum. If your baby seems slow to gain at first, do not lose heart. Plenty can be done to remedy the situation! Don’t be tempted to top up with formula too soon, but do get qualified help.

Tiny Life Newborn Hearing Screening Newborn hearing screening is a compulsory screening test in the USA and UK. Children are therefore identified with hearing losses, even within the mild ranges, within the first few days of life. They are subsequently fitted with hearing aids within the first six weeks of life which significantly reduces the chances of any delays in terms of speech and language. Children born with significant severe-toprofound hearing losses can be waitlisted and fitted early in their life with cochlear implants. Here in South Africa, newborn hearing screening is not compulsory. Should a child not have their hearing screened just following the birth, the only way it is usually recognised is when the mother becomes aware that her child is not responding to sound like other children, or when their speech and language is not developing at the same rate as other children. Identification of hearing loss in S.A. can therefore sometimes be as late as two years of age and its implications are huge in terms of delays in speech and language development. A newborn hearing screening is quick, non-invasive and does not cause your child any pain, and it is implemented in two ways. A handheld little machine is initially used which performs an otoacoustic emission (OAE) measurement on your baby. Should the cochlear’s response be absent, or the middle ear be blocked causing the response to be inconclusive, another little machine called a screening auditory brainstem response test (screening ABR) is then implemented. Should the results of this test indicate a failed response, your child is then referred to a paediatric audiologist for further in-depth ABR testing. Young Life Gelli Baff Bath Fun Gelli Baff is a totally unique, completely safe powder that turns ordinary water into glorious, colourful goo! A secondstage powder then simply turns the goo back to water again so that it can easily be drained. Kids love it in the bath, outdoor kiddies’ pools or even in a small bowl or sink. Suitable for children two to 12, Gelli Baff comes in 11 fabulous colours. Bev Delew and Alice Leah of Mum’s Mail both tried the product out on their children. This is what they had to say: • “Despite the five-minute wait, once Cole was in the bath with the bright blue goo, he had an absolute ball and played for ages. He liked the bright colour of the water and even though I wasn’t too keen on the stuff, he thought it was very cool and before long there were toys and an assortment of objects in the bath with him to get the most out of his Gelli Baff! He wanted some in every colour! It was easy to mix and easy to get out of the bath as well. Highly recommended to get kids into the bath effortlessly!” (Bev). • “My son Ethan (eight) had a ball playing with the green Gelli Baff, so much so that he thought he was a mad scientist cooking up a lethal potion. He was amazed by the transformation from liquid to solid goo and back again. Great fun for outside in a tub or the bath!” (Alice).

Young Life Just for Kids Just for Kids pride themselves in manufacturing wooden folding bench sandpits and furniture for children. All products include delivery anywhere in South Africa. After having experienced other sandpits that were full of cat’s mess and worms, and which became brittle in the sun, Just for Kids decided that there was a great need for a good sandpit that could be closed up. They also realised how important it would be to have drainage in a sandpit to reduce the risk of worms developing in the sand. The company’s folding bench sandpits have two attractive benches which close up to form the protective lid when the sandpit is not in use. Their sandpits are treated for weather and insects. They also offer a varnished finish option to protect the timber long term. The base of the sandpit consists of a felt sheet called weed guard, which assists drainage and prevents worms and grass from entering the sand. Furthermore, they have just recently enhanced the product with galvanised hinges and screws. Just for Kids also manufacture kiddies’ picnic tables, items that are perfect for picnics and braais. They seat up to six children. Their new chalkboard tables are an all time favourite for young customers. The tables come with two little stools. Also available are gorgeous gelato tables which are colourful and great for space saving. The set includes four chairs with storage compartments for toys and stationery under the seat. The chairs nest under the table to form a neat cube. The chairs are supported by strong castor wheels which make it easy for kids to manoeuvre. Educated Life Oxford Pre-School: A Home Away from Home
AlisRo
Cilla Rhoda’s young daughter Cadence attends Oxford Pre-School. Like many mums whose children begin pre-school, Cilla was daunted by the thought of entrusting her child into the care of total strangers. It was also difficult for her to let go of her little one at such a young age and worried about safety, bullying, how she would cope at school, and so forth. Before describing how Cadence has settled, Cilla explains her reasons for sending her child to Oxford Pre-School in the first place: “What piqued my interest and what stood out for me regarding Oxford Pre-School was its slogan ‘In our school we care for each child as if they were our own’. I also noticed certain items on the list of information provided like ‘safe, secure and tranquil environment’, ‘structured daily routine’, ‘small groups with air-conditioned classrooms’, ‘high on hygiene’ (a biggie for me), ‘extramural classes’, to name but a few.” And now that Cadence has settled at her school, Cilla says: “Rest assured, I can confidently say that Cadence is in good hands and has settled in her new environment and routine very nicely. She is enjoying herself tremendously. Karen, Mila, Lauren and Cindy have been absolutely amazing from the beginning with their support, dedication, hard work, patience and, most important of all, love for each child. Oxford Pre-school offers so much more than just teaching. It brings a personal level of interaction between teachers and parents which is a vital link to each child’s development.

Educated Life Fruit Juice for ADD/ADHD Children
Give Kumon a Try
Give your child the edge!
Every mum knows good nutrition and supplementation is essential for healthy growth, development and optimal wellness. Nutrition can and has helped many mums to manage ADD/ADHD and minimise or even avoid prescription drugs. With nutritional management, many mums often focus mostly on the mental-emotional side, while ADD/ADHD children may also suffer from stubborn complaints like recurring infections, allergies, digestive or mal-absorption problems and other complaints indicative of low immunity. Usually, processed or packaged fruit juice would not be recommended as part of a nutritional approach for ADD/ADHD kids, as they may contain too much sugar. Mangosteen juice is different. It should not be drunk for recreation like we would drink orange or apple juice. Rather, it should be drunk in small quantities daily, for a purpose. The mangosteen fruit tastes fantastic, but the nutritional goodness lies in the rind. Independent scientific studies identified that it is rich in unique nutrients called xanthones, not found in other fruits and vegetables. Xanthones are potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory nutrients that may provide benefits for the immune system, digestive system, bones and cartilage, respiratory system and more. Mangosteen is the real original super fruit. It is a food, and thus safe. Source: Dr Werner Kerschbaumer, 082 926 0091, wk.werner@gmail.com, www.mangosteentrend.net. Contact: Barbara Hahn, 083 228 7093, bhahn@mweb.co.za, www.xango.co.za. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has 2 bottles of Mangosteen Juice to give away. Visit www.mumsmail.com to enter.

Party Life Minute-To-Win-It Mum’s Mail had fun with Playworks who expertly organised a Minute-To-Win-It game show, which is something they offer as a team building or party idea.Playworks set up an awesome stage at our venue, and divided us into teams (4 people per team).
LARGE GROUPS
The first round was relatively simple. One team member was nominated to wear “googly eye” goggles and then blinded, collect two balls that were precariously balanced on poles at the corners of the “stage” without dropping them.

The second challenge was more difficult! One person had to thread spaghetti through the loop on the top of an empty can and the other person had to put the opposite end of the pasta into their mouth and “carry” the can to a table without breaking the spaghetti.

I was thankful to be nominated to do the third task, which was sorting Smarties into cups by colour using one hand.
FOR AGES 5 & UP
The next task was bubble blowing through a hoop. Some people even risked their lives by diving onto the floor to ensure their bubble never popped before blowing it through the raised hula hoop! This was followed by the “leap spoon” challenge (which is a little like leap frog but with plastic spoons and cups) – this made for some awesome face-pulling moments caught on camera. Then came the balancing of golf balls on top of each other, oh boy! We had so much fun and loads of laughs, and I highly recommend that you call Playworks for your next party or function (adults and kids catered for, as well as corporate groups), on 082 856 1018 or 031 – 466 4488 or info@playworks.co.za.

Permanent Bubbles
Use What?
• Black cardboard • Clear nail polish • Rectangular shallow plastic container • Water • Plastic pipette/dropper
Do What? 1. Place black cardboard in the plastic container. 2. Add water until about 2cm high (enough to cover the board fully). 3. Using the plastic pipette/ dropper, take up about 1cm of nail polish. You only need 1 drop of this. 4. Add 1 drop of the nail polish on to the surface of the water in the container. The nail polish will quickly expand to make a circular film on the surface of the water. 5. Let the circular film of nail polish dry for a while on the surface of the water. The ends will wrinkle slightly and the centre will take a little longer to dry. (explain why the nail polish and water don’t mix = density; difference in density = difference in refractive index or how light bends and how fast light travels in different mediums). 6. Gently lift one end of the board out of the water, making sure you catch the edge of the thin circle on the board. 7. Let any excess water drip back into the container, then set the board onto some newspaper to dry. 8. Let kids write their names on the paper using a milky coloured pen.
So What? This workshop introduces kids to the meaning of density as well as how light waves travel. When creating the permanent bubble, both these topics are very important. Density doesn’t allow the nail polish and water to mix because nail polish is less dense than water due to its oil base. Refraction of light and how fast light travels in water allows the bubble to be seen with all the different colours on its surface. Light travels slower through the nail polish which increases the refractive index. As the light travels slowly it is split into the colours of the spectrum. Activity courtesy of:

Party Life Tugo Review by Jane Linley-Thomas The day the bright tub of Tugo blocks arrived home I don’t know who was more overjoyed - 18 month old Cooper or 33 year old Michael. The lid was ripped off and 282 pieces of primary-coloured magic were scattered all around Cooper’s bedroom. What I love about the Tugo concept is that designs are dictated by your child’s imagination. From cars, trucks, bridges and houses to tables and chairs - if you can imagine it you can make it. Not only is Tugo a world of fun but it will also develop the following skills at an early age: • Lateral thinking – the challenge to construct an object in different ways. • Concentration. • Gross and fine motor co-ordination. • Three dimensional perception. • Cognitive skills by stretching the imagination. Tugo also promotes recycling by facilitating the use of cardboard household cores found in toilet rolls and paper hand towels which can be used as additional building blocks in the Tugo building experience. While Coop is a bit young to seriously sink his creative teeth into free play construction, there is no doubt that many hours of fun with Dad are on the cards. Tugo is suitable for any creative soul aged 3 to 103. Check out http://www.tugo.co.za for more information and the opportunity to download your own set of educational flash cards. Follow Jane’s musings on www.janelinleythomas.co.za or on Twitter: JaneLinleyT.

Party Life Beesting and His Friends Beesting has a little friend who lives permanently behind his left ear. Her name is Stella and, unlike other fleas who have six legs, Stella has only four. Oh dear, I wonder what happened you may think…? Let me tell you. Stella has only four legs because she lost two whilst she was still living on the tip of the bushy tail of Wandering Star, the ungrateful lion. One day Wandering Star was in a big fight with Memele the Buffalo and Stella got in the way - but that is a long story for another day.
T/A MYU ENTERPRISE
“Come now Beesting, it is time to wake up,” Losh said as he opened the veranda door. “Today you and Iolla and I are going to take Lesley, Edward, Saffy, Decky and Connie from Thinta with us in Cheeckaround, the hot air balloon. Lolla is packing some of the last sandwiches, chips, fruit and other nice things for us to eat.” Huuurraaaayyy!!! Beesting was beside himself with excitement. He loved havHassim 083 685 5577 ing the kids from Thinta around. When www.partyzonehire.co.za they visited, which was often, they would run and play ball and hide and seek with him. Beesting’s tongue would sometimes drag on the ground he was so tired, but he wouldn’t give up. As long as he could play! Thinta is a home for children who have no parents. Because Losh and Lolla have no children of their own they have Castles: treated the children of Thinta to many • Weekend special - Hire for 1 day keep for an outings and adventures in Cheekaround, extra day! • Midweek special - Hire for 1 day keep for 3 days extra! their hot air balloon.

Relaxed Life Man-Eating Bananas In November 2011 Mum’s Mail received an e-mail entitled “Please don’t eat bananas for the next three weeks”. Sections of the message read as follows (all spelling mistakes have been left in, despite the Editor’s horror!): Several deliveries of bananas from uvongo kwa-zulu natal south afica have been infected with necrotizing fasciltis, otherwise known as flesh eating bacteria. Recently this disease has decimated the monkey population in the south coast. We are now just learning that the disease has been able to graft itself to the skin of fruits in the region, most notably the banana which is one of south africas largest exports. Until this finding scientists were not sure how the infection was being transmitted. It is advised not to purchase bananas for the next three weeks!!! If you have eaten a banana in the last 2 - 3 days and come down with a fever followed by a skin infection seek MEDICAL ATTENTION!!! The skin infection from necrotizing fasciitis is very painful and eats two to three centimeters of flesh per hour. Amputation is likely, death is possible.. (The FDA) have secretly admitted that they feel upwards of 15,000 South Africans will be affected by this... The original of this e-mail, citing Costa Rica as the infected area, began circulating in December 1999. This version, which appears word for word on Snopes.com, was started in November 2011. Snopes declares it a “malicious hoax”. South African readers can rest assured that there’s no government cover up of a deadly disease about to wipe out the banana-eating population. In the USA the original e-mail sparked so many calls to the Centre for Disease Control that the centre even set up a special banana hotline to ease consumers’ minds! Always visit www.snopes.com to verify e-mails before forwarding them on to friends and family!

Relaxed Life Olympic Sportswomen As we mark International Women’s Day on 8 March it is appropriate that we celebrate two South African women who were and are involved in the international sporting competition, the Olympic Games. Mariette Meaklim, a Kloof resident, qualified for the Olympic Games for Zimbabwe in 1984. “The games were held in Los Angeles,” said Mariette, “and I competed in Track and Field and my discipline was Shot-put and Discus. I held the South African and Africa records for some 20 years. Going to the Olympics was incredible. Nothing can describe the feeling of walking into a packed stadium holding about 75 000 people!” Mariette now supports her daughter, Kathryn, who is an Olympic swimmer. Kathryn competed in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and hopes to qualify to compete in the London Olympic Games this year. Here’s holding thumbs! Kathryn trains in the pool for two hours twice a day, Monday to Friday. Saturday comprises one three-hour session while Sundays are rest days. On top of her swim schedule, Kathryn also does four gym sessions per week. “I love swimming,” said Kathryn, “and to do what I love most while seeing the world is awesome! Being a swimmer at this level has been a dream of mine since I was eight or nine years old so to compete at this level truly is a dream come true!” When not supporting her daughter, Mariette runs a small business supplying a range of sweets, confectionary and biscuits to school tuckshops. She services some 70 tuckshops in and around Durban and has developed a network of suppliers.

Relaxed Life Saffron Restaurant Delights I recently enjoyed dinner at the gorgeous Saffron Restaurant at the Coastlands hotel in Umhlanga with my gracious hosts Leshana and Bradley Viranna. Let me just say that I was most impressed by the experience. Who knew that inside this modern building lay a little gem just waiting to be discovered! Executive chef Andrew Riley has created a spectacular seafood menu and has certainly not cut any corners! A full range of salads, prawn cocktails, seafood soup and caviar starters set the mood for a myriad of mains, some from live cooking stations, including paella, kingklip thermidor, mussels in creamy sauce, grilled calamari and hake to name a few! Add to this aromatic savoury rice, roast potatoes or veggies and you’re set.

The seafood platter arrived at our table, courtesy of talented chef in attendance, Athizaan Rassool, and was positively brimming with marine treasures – prawns, langoustines, calamari, crayfish and mussels - all prepared to perfection.

Desserts on offer are as varied as the mains and depending on your preference and how much space you have left, you can select anything from crème brûlée, tarts, cakes or, my personal favourite, hot pudding with ice cream or custard! The Saffron Restaurant also offers themed buffets every night of the week, including a Sunday lunch. Children are welcome. So next time you’re wondering where to eat out, try the Saffron Restaurant... you’ll be glad you did!
