Joanita is a practicing psychologist and owner of “eye love KIDS CLOTHING” – an exclusive kids’ online clothing store. Joanita jokes that “eye love” is her third baby! Minki-Elle – affectionately known as Squish – is three and a half years old, and growing up WAY to fast, according to her mom! “My daughter is an excellent tantrum-thrower and she is skilled in stubbornness. Her love for her bottle and her rabbit rival her love for her parents. And she will do almost anything for something sweet!” laughs Joanita. “She also has the best sense of humour. She is caring and loving and always wanting

She follows the lead of her 6-year-old brother, Francois, who has a dinosaur and army obsession of note! Francois wants to be a “thinkman” one day – “someone who thinks of things and then makes it”. He has a kind heart, says his mom. “There is no greater privilege than the love of a child - it really is a different kind of love. I am humbled to be called mommy by those two souls. I love learning from my kids - I am a better person now than I was before. I have less hang-ups, I am more patient. I am learning to enjoy the simpler things again. I love learning about who they are as people – and I couldn’t be any prouder,” concludes Joanita. Written by Sarah Mackintosh

REMEMBER YOU! Woman! History has shown that women are incredibly powerful beings! This is evident when we look at how dramatically our roles have changed in the last two or three generations. How many women reading these words had a grandmother or great-grandmother working as a full-time professional? My suspicion is that it was very rare... In a short time, we women have evolved from full-time homemakers into entrepreneurs, professionals and full-time employees while still fulfilling the roles of homemaker, nurturer, parent and partner. Being spread so thinly, we often forget about ourselves and if we do remember, we only remember to take care of our exterior – but what about our interior...? Our mind, thoughts and feelings – the part of us that drives the rest. How easily do we lose the balance of work, self-care and other-care? The pressure to keep the balance has increased dramatically!

Les Louse A Journey Begins with Taking the First Step

Les Louse aims to bring head lice awareness, education, treatment and research to South Africa. The Les Louse method is known throughout the United States of America and worldwide as the most effective and safest treatment option when compared to available alternatives. They are proud to be the first company on the African continent to have received this specialised training.

Peace of mind Les Louse offers education/ awareness about lice, consultations, treatment and control as well as head checks – by appointment only. Knowledge is Key: Facts about Head Lice • Head Lice are transmitted mostly from head-to-head contact. • Indirect transmission can occur through lice-carrying objects. • The saliva of the head louse contains a vasodilator and an anticoagulant that cause an allergic reaction in most individuals.

• Red marks and itching at the site of the bite on the scalp will be present. • Severe itching indicates a severe infestation, which might lead to further dangers. • Head Lice are blood-sucking parasites and therefore depend on human blood for survival, which is an interesting factor, as blood types draw the head louse to a specific individual. • Head Lice can infest all levels of society. • Lice CANNOT fly or jump. • Head Lice are very host-specific – lice that affect humans cannot be transmitted to and from pets or other animals. • Infestations are difficult to treat due to the development of lice that are resistant to many existing pediculicides. Awareness, education and control are essential! Contact Les Louse today for all your head lice needs and advice. HEAD LICE AWARENESS • EDUCATION • TREATMENTS & RESEARCH WHY IS WORKING IN THIS INDUSTRY SO IMPORTANT TO US?

“Our clients often ask us: “Why do you want to do this type of work?” There is no simpler way to answer this, The Shepherd Method™ is one of the safest and most effective ways to treat and control Head Lice Infestations. To add to this is to highlight the importance to raise awareness and change the stigma associated with Pediculosis especially here in South Africa. We assist in implementing Head Lice Policies at School Level, this is a fundamental way to reach parents. The relief our clients experience when the infestation is under control is rewarding. It is with compassion that we try to make a difference in this industry, we love what we do wholeheartedly. It is a challenging industry but the Intensive Training and Certification that we received from The Shepherd Institute in 2016 helped pave the way for us to confidently enable positive change.” - Marlene Botha and Jacqueline Snyman (The Shepherd Institute Certified Professionals South Africa)

Breastfeeding in Public Restrooms: Is it Safe?

Women have been breastfeeding their babies for millennia, yet nursing mothers are often subject to shaming and verbal abuse if they dare to breastfeed in public.

“It’s an indictment on our society that we tolerate topless models in our fashion magazines, but that breastfeeding mothers are chased out of public spaces on a daily basis,” says Stasha Jordan, breastfeeding activist and executive director of the South African Breastmilk Reserve (SABR). “Many mothers are forced to use public bathrooms to feed their babies rather than face this kind of abuse,” says Jordan. “A public toilet is one of the most unhygienic and dangerous places to nurse your infant,” she continues.

before finally settling, invisibly, on surfaces throughout the area. These droplets carry a wide variety of pathogens, including viruses and bacteria, many of which could prove deadly to an infant’s fragile immune system. Breastfeeding at work is already protected under South African law. The Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA) stipulates that employees with infants must be allowed two breaks of 30 minutes each, every working day, to allow for breastfeeding or expressing milk. “Breastfeeding is vital to the wellbeing of our future generations,” says Jordan. “Our responsibility is to encourage and support mothers, not to harass or shun them.”

When a toilet is flushed without first closing the lid, fine droplets of excrement are sprayed into the air. These can drift around the room for up to two hours after each flush

To get involved and alleviate the challenges faced by SABR, visit www.sabr.org.za or call 011 – 482 1920 or e-mail: info@sabr.org.za.

DIY Galaxy Jar

Supplies: • Clear glass bottle with a lid • Cotton balls – lots and lots of cotton balls • Glitter • Food dye and water • Glow in the dark paint How to make galaxy jars: • Fill your bottle half-full with cotton balls. Compress the cotton balls – they will fill the lower inch of the bottle when you are finished. • Pour some water into the bottle, enough to saturate the cotton balls. • Drip two to three drops of food colouring into your bottle. Add a squirt of glow paint and a dash of glitter. • Then – do it all again! Add more cotton balls, more water, more glitter and glowy juice. • As the layers grow it gets harder and harder to fill the jar. Using a stiff straw to tamper the cotton balls back down into their layer helps. • Keep adding new colours and new layers until your bottle is completely full. Put the lid on your bottle securely. As your bottle ages, you will want to rehydrate the cotton balls to keep the blurred “sky look”. • Set the bottle on your windowsill to allow the glow paint to charge. As your kids drift to sleep they will see a sky, including a glittery milky way looking back at them, from their galaxy bottle.

Fridge Brownies This was a staple in my house growing up, and it’s such a quick and easy recipe to whip up with or for your kids! I’m going to start making this again TODAY! Give it a try! Ingredients • 250g butter/margarine, cubed • 500g icing sugar • 100ml cocoa powder • 2 eggs, beaten lightly • 2 x 200g Marie Biscuit packets Method: • In a large bowl, microwave the butter/ margarine for approximately 1 ½ minutes or until melted. Sift the icing sugar and cocoa powder together and stir into the melted butter. • Fold the eggs into the mixture and microwave for about three minutes. • Break the Marie Biscuits into pieces and combine with the chocolate mixture. • Spoon into a 20cm x 20cm baking pan and leave to cool. • Place in the fridge to set, then cut into squares or shapes, as required. And voila – you have a tasty snack!

These make great gifts for your kids’ friends and it’s a great way to upcycle glass jars and bottles. Source: www.kidsactivitiesblog.com.
