Editor’s Life Holiday Fever In case you’ve not noticed, very little work is bound to get done during the month of April. The school holidays run from 28 March to 7 April (for most schools) and then the Easter weekend runs from 18 April to 21 April. Add Freedom Day on 27 April to the mix (it’s on a Sunday so Monday 28 April will also be a public holiday), and Thursday 1 May (Workers’ Day) – and I’m sure that most schools will close on Friday 2 May too. Trying to get any work done is going to be a real challenge, makes me want to take the whole month of April off! When I worked for a boss, I loved public holidays – for obvious reasons. But owning your own business makes public holidays somewhat of an inconvenience. Theoretically, you should/could get as much more done in a four day week, as you know you need to cram in 5 days of work, but it seldom works like that. A holiday fever seems to grip the office and everyone is in a party mood. We are busy planning a camping trip down the south coast for the Easter weekend. We don’t get away in our caravan as often as we would like to, but when we do, the kids have an absolute blast. I was starting to think that my 14 year old would be over camping by now (last week she told me that hash tags are now “so last season by the way”), but she was the most excited when we suggested it. What do you have planned for the holidays?

Laidback Life Books & Books Reviews • Orleans by Sherry L. Smith (teen fiction). After devastating hurricanes and a severe outbreak of Delta Fever, the Gulf Coast has been quarantined. Years later, residents of the Outer States are under the assumption that life in the Delta is all but extinct… but in reality, a new society has been born. Fen de la Guerre is in the Delta when they are ambushed. Left with her tribe leader’s newborn, she is determined to get the baby to safety. Fen meets Daniel, a scientist from the Outer States who has snuck into the Delta illegally. Brought together by chance, kept together by danger, they navigate the wasteland of Orleans. In the end, they are each other’s last hope for survival. • Atticus Claw Goes Ashore by Jennifer Grey (5-9 year olds). Atticus is on the beach when he finds a message in a bottle from Fishhook Frank. Fishhook is marooned on a desert island, but he promises Atticus treasure in exchange for his rescue! Atticus sets out to rescue Fishhook Frank and find the treasure with his owners, the Cheddar family. But it’s not all plain sailing. Captain Black Beard Jumper is also on the lookout for the Casket and he’ll curse anyone who gets in his way. • Joe & the Race to the Rescue by Victoria Eveleigh (10-12 year olds). Joe is fascinated by every horse he meets but new challenges await him and his pony, Fortune. He meets Velvet and Sherman, two majestic Shires, who open his eyes to the world of heavy horses. Joe is about to discover just how awesome Shires can be when they help him in a dangerous and dramatic rescue at the Hidden Horseshoe sanctuary… • Butterfly & the Birthday Surprise by Mandy Archer (kid’s picture flat). Butterfly wants everything to be perfect for her perfect birthday party. She’s got her dress, her cake and the fairies are helping her with the invites and decoration. But when it rains and everybody has to go home the other fairies help to save the day! A gorgeous series about fairies, friendship and baking! Holiday Life Lunchtime at Olive & Oil Tired of raucous family restaurants, restaurateur Jacqui Itopoulos decided to open a sophisticated, yet reasonably priced family restaurant of her own, Olive & Oil in Umhlanga. That was eight years ago. Now there are five branches of this Mediterranean-styled restaurant in KZN, owned and managed by two families. Lasting through tough economic times must certainly be due as much to the “comfortable food made exceptionally well”, as it is to their ability to adapt to customers’ changing needs. To this end Olive & Oil now offers a special lunchtime menu seven days a week, which comprises two courses (R99.95) or three courses (R119.95) accompanied by a free glass of wine, or juice. There is also a kiddies’ menu with a range of choices at R35.95 each, together with a vanilla ice-cream cone for dessert, and most of the restaurants have their own kiddies’ room or Wendy House area to keep them entertained too! Business Life When the Marriage Magic Fades Love is a crazy, dizzy, wonderful feeling. It makes us excited, carefree and reckless. Roger Knowles This explains why many people make bad Attorneys decisions when they are about to marry. Divorce and And I don’t mean their choice of a mate! Family Law With the divorce rate close to 50%, bad Specialists choices are almost a given. 031 - 563 1238

One of the most important decisions you will ever make is whether to marry in community of property, or subject to an ante nuptial contract. Most people do not give enough attention to this, yet it is one of the most important decisions of their lives. Many women find themselves penniless at the end of a marriage. After all the years of hard work, the pain and joy of raising children and the weariness that comes with age, it is a nasty shock to find yourself insolvent. This occurs when you have no claim for any share of accumulated wealth, as a result of the legal position you are in. Here are some pointers: • Ongoing maintenance for adults after divorce is rare. • A woman is expected to get back into the labour market if her marriage breaks down. • If your marriage contract excludes the ‘accrual system’, you have no claim against your husband’s estate. • Many women do not even read their ante nuptial contracts until trouble begins. • You may have no claim, even if the accrual system applies. One way or another, it is essential to know well in advance what your financial future is likely to be. You need to have your own financial plan. Start now.

Business Life Why you Should Insure his Life Yourself If your partner’s life is insured and he dies, you would expect to get paid out quickly and without hassles. But the sad fact is that every day bereaved women are discovering that their partner’s life insurance policy was a dud. Most women believe, naively, that if a man has a policy listing them as the beneficiary, then all is well and good. Unfortunately this is not necessarily the case.

‘Selling your business is our business’ • 1000+ Businesses for Sale in South Africa • Qualified buyers looking for profitable businesses • Business Valuations Contact: 072 100 7025 Wendy@aldes.co.za www.aldessupreme.co.za an authorised ALDES franchise

Some women try to claim on an insurance policy in which they are listed as the beneficiary, only to discover that the policy has lapsed. Perhaps her partner had failed to keep up the payments. If a woman is divorced and her ex-husband dies, her alimony and child support source dries up. What then? A life policy should cover this, but it is dangerous to leave this to the husband and his new family, if there is one. Generally, the new wife will not care about the ex-wife’s well-being. Just because a wife’s name is on a policy document it does not mean that she will get the proceeds of the policy if her partner dies. Often men are dying in debt and bankrupt. There are many creditors who stand in line in such cases, and the wife or ex-wife is way at the back of the queue. Fortunately the solution is simple. Get your own policy on your man’s life. As the owner you can make sure that the policy is managed properly. You will have the peace of mind knowing that in the event of his death, the money will come to you, straight away. Their customers include busy working moms, new moms and single moms. Life is busy and whether we have a family, work or stay at home, finding time to prepare healthy, tasty meals for your family is becoming more difficult. One of Foodeez’ longest standing customers, a single mom, sent this mail: “Thanks to your wonderful meals, I get home from work and instead of rushing around cooking and washing dishes, I spend valuable time with my 5-year-old son. I still get to eat a delicious supper with him before he goes to bed.” Their recipes utilise the freshest ingredients and are home-cooked to the highest standards. Meals are packaged in oven and/or microwave-proof portions. Delivery is direct to your home or business for a nominal fee. The cycle is 10 days – from flight of a new menu to delivery of your order. A quick link in the email allows online orders and ordering via email is also acceptable. Prompt payment via EFT is rewarded by the Early Payment Benefit scheme. On proof of payment, your order is produced and delivery guaranteed the following Wednesday. Their dishes alleviate expense and timeconsuming preparation. World Homoeopathy Awareness Week INTRODUCING OUR NEW HEALING CREAM Celebrate ...naturally World Homeopathy Awareness Week Most people have heard of a Homeopath. A few years ago many didn’t know what a Homeopath was, so this is a great step forward in the growth of this incredible healing modality. More people are experiencing the rapid and lasting healing of Homeopathy. There are many natural healing modalities out there and that is why it is important to consult someone who has a qualification in a medical healing art. Homeopaths study as long and hard as GPs and are a wealth of medical knowledge. They are trained in first line medical care and the art of diagnosing and many combine other forms of natural medicine in powerful combinations that work in synergy. Homeopathic remedies are used in stimulating the specific healing required to resolve whatever ailment you have; big or small, acute or chronic. No, it doesn’t take long to work, it begins healing the moment you take it, what takes the time is the healing response. A conventional drug takes away a symptom for a certain time, whereas Homeopathic medicine triggers a healing response in the body. This may mean that we need to flush something out and we begin visiting the loo more often or develop a snotty nose. This is a healing response, so that the body can clear it.

Healthy Life The 100m Barefoot World Record Challenge Grace Aid is celebrating the annual ‘One Day without Shoes’ campaign by attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the number of barefoot runners in a 100m race on Saturday 5 April at the Kings Park outer fields. Registration is at 9am with the race starting at 10am. Durban’s eThekwini Municipality via Imagine Durban are partnering in this exciting event. ODWS is an annual celebration where participants take off their shoes to raise awareness for children’s health and education. Imagine a school day, sports, stairs, roads, sidewalks and even bathrooms, all barefoot. KZN children know about this all too well and Grace Aid wants to change that! Entrance to the race is free, Grace Aid are just asking that people donate a new pair of children’s shoes if they’d like. “It’s just 100 metres and you don’t even have to run fast. A leisurely jog will do!” said Grace Aid director, Dave Richter. “We’re aiming at a 1 000 people, so bring everyone you know with feet!” The shoes will be distributed to projects who serve disadvantaged children. Actor and comedian, Aaron McIlroy, will host and run barefoot! There’ll be a festive vibe with live music, jumping castles and a post-race picnic. Bring a picnic basket or buy food at the race. All are welcome, so bring your friends and take off your shoes to change the road ahead for our kids. Every foot counts! Visit www.graceaid.org for maps and event details.

Healthy Life Sticking to Your Medication: Top 10 Tips Many South Africans are prescribed medication for depression, bipolar, anxiety and a variety of other mental illnesses. However, sometimes we are not informed about what we can expect from our medication. The South African Depression and Anxiety Group offers these tips for sticking to your medication: • Know how you are supposed to take your medication. Go over your prescription with your doctor. • If you need to take your medication on an empty stomach, take it at least one hour before a meal. If it should be taken with food, then take it after a full meal, and not just a snack. • Set a reminder on your watch or cell phone to help remind you about your medication. • Get support: Do not be afraid to ask your family or friends for help. • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist: Do not be afraid to ask them about anything you don’t understand. • Use a pill box to help you organise your medication. • Keep a mood diary and medication list. • Side-effects can be expected, but they are manageable. Do not stop taking your medication without talking to your doctor. • Medication doesn’t start working immediately, you need to give it at least a few weeks. Stick to your medication, even if you feel that it is not working, or when you are feeling better. • Keep your medication in an easy-to-spot place at home. Keep some at your work or office, in case you forget to take them with you. SADAG’s helplines, staffed by trained volunteer counsellors, are available from 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week. Cutaneous fungal infections are more common in diabetics and immunocompromised patients, especially patients on long term steroid therapy. Clinically, the patient presents with red scaly patches. The patches have an active red scaly edge and a healing centre. The rash may be round or polycyclic and tends to become confluent in long-standing cases. The treatment of this common condition includes the following: • Early detection and prompt treatment. • Keep the skin cool by wearing loose clothing. • Dry the skin folds and feet after showers. • Moisturise the hands and feet regularly. • Consult your general practitioner/ dermatologist for prompt treatment of the skin condition.

Healthy Life Chelation Makes the Difference – The GNLD Difference

Rehana Paruk

Occupational Therapist Pr No. 0416436

Calcium and Magnesium are critical for strong bones, yet if they are not effectively absorbed by the body, they cannot produce the desired impact for optimal health. Minerals are highly reactive and can easily bond with other things (such as fat) in the digestive tract, becoming nonabsorbable. They can even bond to the intestine itself. The answer lies in knowing that it can happen, and taking action to prevent it.

Chelation Makes The Difference!

SAB member Dr Arthur Furst knew minerals well. He also knew that they could be bonded (chelated) to amino acids, and because the body loves amino acids, they and the minerals they’re bonded to would be more readily absorbed. Minerals chelated with amino acids may be absorbed up to six times greater than non-chelated minerals. GNLD’s exclusive double amino acid chelation technology, developed over 30 years ago by Dr Furst, is the most efficient way of delivering supplemental minerals. The exclusive process produces stable, highly absorbable chelated mineral supplements only available from GNLD. Source: Dennis & Lesley Banks, Independent GNLD Distributors, 031 – 564 4200.

Healthy Life Health Restoration Without Drugs

DESHNI PILLAY

Audiologist & Speech therapist p.r. no. 0327492

Back in the late 1800s, Thomas Edison discovered electricity and with it came a means to control it; that thing was called a switch. In our homes we have a distribution board with various white switches that control the lights, fridge, stove, geyser etc. Then there is that green switch called the mains which controls everything. According to the text books on medical physiology, our bodies function in a similar manner. The atlas vertebra or first cervical, the one on which the skull rests, is the ‘main’ switch of the body and is also the most vulnerable area. Often the atlas is misaligned at birth, which programmes the individual for poor health for the rest of his/her life. This situation can be corrected by means of accurate adjusting. The spine comprises 24 movable segments with nerves, blood vessels and other important structures exiting from between them, through spaces called intervertebral foramina. When all of the vertebrae are in good alignment, these vital structures are free of interference and should result in good health. Stresses of all kinds disturb the structure of the spine and literally begin switching us off. This happens especially in the neck, resulting in loss of lordosis, spondylosis, neck and arm pain, headaches, anger management problems and obesity.

Young Life Trampolines Bring Joy I have heard moving house is as traumatic as death or divorce, a bit dramatic I thought. We were so excited and ready for our move that the sight of packed boxes and bubble wrap rather enthralled me! Add to that a water cut in our new neighbourhood and a 3-year-old with a tummy bug, not pretty filling toilets from the pool and rinsing plates in pool water from buckets, but we were running on adrenaline and celebratory whiskeys. It’s an expensive exercise moving house and money spent is determined by a list of must-have priorities. Right on the top of the kids’ list was a trampoline. Ever since we went to Jozi to visit cousin India and her trampoline, it’s all Cooper speaks about. With three little ones it is a welcome relief, as much time is spent in the garden. The kids adore it! The twins giggle uncontrollably as big brother bear bounces them around. Every weekday after school it’s straight out the car, and within minutes raucous laughter can be heard. On weekends, even before 8am, PJ clad we are gathered around, parents sipping coffee blurry-eyed and kids jumping. The service we experienced from Alan and his team at Joy Trampolines was worldclass. They were in and out within a few hours, hole dug, trampoline and padded sandbags in. Joy Trampolines have been manufacturing/installing and delivering trampolines for over 20 years. It makes my heart happy that my kids are out in the garden expelling energy, as opposed to crumpled up in front of the TV. By Jane Linley-Thomas. Young Life Transform your Child’s Drawing with Make with Grace

Glenashley

Imagine the delight on your little one’s face when they see their drawing come to life! Make with Grace transforms your child’s drawing into a soft toy. The focus is to turn children’s drawings of creatures that keep them safe into soft toys. They only use fabrics that are donated or upcycled, for instance, a dinosaur was made from a t-shirt and an old pair of jeans. On the Make with Grace website there is a process called ‘creating your toy on paper’. It’s designed to get children to connect to, and access, the ultimate image of their particular creature that keeps them safe. Children love being given permission to draw outside the lines, and develop a fantasy creature from the depths of their imaginations, without being made to feel that it’s wrong or should be more realistic. Make with Grace endeavours to build the child’s self-esteem through their creativity being celebrated with their creature coming alive.

Young Life Play and Learn Watching children play can be a fascinating and entertaining experience. The value of play and the role of parents in this aspect of child development leads to great learning opportunities for growing children. Playtimes are really learning times! Parents can encourage fun experiences for their children and let them be part of handson situations. A variety of developmental areas can be embraced naturally as children play. Did you know? • Baking helps with measuring, pouring, eye-hand co-ordination, following instructions, safety, cause and effect and sequencing. • Tea time encourages socialisation, etiquette, balance, estimation, sharing and language development. • Gardening connects children to nature, seasons, weather, responsibility and the value of hard work.

Young Life Help Sasha-Lee Realise her Dream

the New Zealand Open Water National Champs 10 km.

Local swimmer, SashaLee Nordengen (16), has been swimming since she was 18 months old and as she has grown, so has her passion and love for being in the water.

In South Africa she doesn’t have the opportunity to get as much racing experience and she gained valuable experience while overseas. Her flights alone cost R30 000, which she funded herself by selling brownies and bubble bath. She has qualified to represent South Africa at the Junior World Champs in Israel, but this is a self-funded trip.

In the pool she has been national age group champ for the 800m and 400m, although her focus and desire is the open water. She started swimming open water in 2010 and is presently one of the top two open water 10km female swimmers in SA.

Sasha-Lee needs to fund her next trip, as she really wants to travel out of SA more often to get the much needed experience. She is determined to get to the Olympics but needs assistance and is looking for sponsorship.

She recently arrived back from training in Australia and New Zealand, where she swam the New South Wales Open Water 2013 Champs in December, partaking in the 10km and 5km. She placed 2nd in Australia and in January she came 2nd in

Young Life Giving back with Kidz2Kidz Many South Africans know the success story that is the Santa Shoebox Project. This heart-warming project is an inspiring community initiative of the Kidz2Kidz Trust. In 2013 Santa Shoebox broke all previous records, collecting 118 274 gifts for children at over 1 000 orphanages, crèches and care centres around the country. Other projects run by Kidz2Kidz are Teachers2Teachers and Donation2Distribution. The Teachers2Teachers project encourages and facilitates the sharing of knowledge, information and resources between teachers, enhancing the mutual understanding of each other’s realities and improving education of children in communities. Regular visits to schools encourage children to attend school all year round through fun surprises and activities. Highlights of the year include donations of stationery packs, literacy corners, blankets and jerseys in winter, planting gardens in spring and the Santa Shoeboxes at the end of the year. Donation2Distribution packages boxes of joy for children in rural areas, orphanages, places of safety and care centres. Schools are encouraged to act as a collection point for clean and usable clothes, pairs of shoes, underwear, educational toys, blankets, toiletries, non-perishable foods, nappies, stationery and sports equipment for children in need. Tiny Life Signs of a Bad Babysitter

“The gentle approach to baby swimming“

It’s not always easy to know whether your child’s caregiver is doing her job. To make sure, you may have to do some sleuthing. Some parents who suspect something’s amiss rent nanny surveillance equipment. But it’s often possible to tell whether something’s wrong without going to that extreme. You may have trouble on your hands if: • Your child seems afraid of the nanny or babysitter and has become anxious and withdrawn. Many times, kids need an adjustment period to get used to a new caregiver. But if your child seems fearful or continues to be unhappy, it’s worth looking into. • Your nanny or babysitter seems secretive about the daily routine. How your child and her caregiver spend their time shouldn’t be a secret. • Your child has been in one too many easily avoidable accidents. A nanny must keep her eye on your child, and know what he’s doing at all times to prevent injury. • Your nanny or babysitter often shows up late. An undependable caregiver will leave you in a lurch time and time again. • Your child often looks unusually unkempt and dirty. If your little one’s caregiver can’t take care of the basics, it may be a sign that she’s not on the ball when it comes to meeting your child’s needs. • Your child is consistently hungry and tired. If your child eats like she hasn’t had a bite all day or is so exhausted she can’t keep her eyes open, that’s a red flag. The caregiver may not be following regular mealtimes or nap times. • You simply get a bad feeling about the caregiver. When in doubt, trust your gut. Source: www.babycentre.com. 59

Tiny Life Worried about Breastfeeding? Breastfeeding can seem daunting for a new mom, especially if those around her are eroding her confidence with their own negative experiences. We pay cash for high-end, pre-owned baby furniture

Here are some of the reasons new moms give for why they aren’t breastfeeding, and why these reasons shouldn’t put you off:

Contact Kitty 083 412 9641 kitty@thebabyboutique.co.za

• “I don’t produce enough milk. My baby is always hungry.” This is probably the number one reason, yet most women will produce enough milk to nourish their babies if they follow good breastfeeding practice. If your baby is gaining weight, seems reasonably content, is alert, and produces five or more wet nappies and two to five poo nappies a day from day four, don’t worry about your milk supply. • “It’s just too painful.” La Leche League says that 80-90% of breastfeeding moms will experience nipple pain, and 26% will get cracked, extremely sore nipples. There are many causes of this, and most of them are simple to fix. With a little time, good nipple care, and the guidance of a lactation consultant, breastfeeding will stop being painful. • “I got mastitis.” Mastitis is the inflammation of a mammary gland, which presents with flu-like symptoms and a sore area on your breast. While painful, mastitis doesn’t mean the end of breastfeeding. Feeding more to empty the milk ducts is part of the cure (mastitis doesn’t make the milk unsafe for your baby).

• “I have to go back to work soon, so what’s the point?” If expressing isn’t an option, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider breastfeeding at all. Any amount of breastfeeding is a gift for your baby. Source: Jude Polack, Genesis Clinic, 011 – 646 3923, jude.p@genesisclinic.co.za, www.genesisclinic.co.za. www.mumsmail.com

Educated Life Lifelong Learning Trend on the Increase

Pre-school

Research shows that the adult brain retains impressive powers of neuroplasticity, the ability to change structure and function in response to experiences. This, coupled with a growing thirst for new knowledge and skills, has created an increased popularity in lifelong learning. An American study, carried out by an organisation called AARP (www.aarp.prg), showed that 9 out of 10 adults want to actively seek out learning opportunities in order to keep current, grow personally and enjoy the pleasure of mastering something new. Research continues to highlight the importance of lifelong learning for a longer, healthier life. “There is nothing like listening to a fascinating lecture and debating the topic to exercise your brain and to develop conversation. General knowledge is power and food for dialogue, and the art of conversation is being lost as we find ourselves addicted to television, social media and SMS’ing,” says Osi Raviv, founder and CEO of Open Mind, an educational initiative offering short evening courses for adults to stimulate their brains, feed their general knowledge and enrich their lives. “Lifelong learning has many benefits, such as keeping your mind sharp, improving your memory, increasing self-confidence, giving you a feeling of accomplishment, helping you meet people who share your interests, building on skills you already have and giving you a new interest that you can share with family and friends. Lifelong learning is like a gym membership for your brain and an active mind can lead to improved physical activity and keeps your spirits high. It’s a wonderful all-around tool for better health,” concluded Raviv. Source: Open Mind, www.openmindcourses.com. www.mumsmail.com

Educated Life Home Schooling We live in a society that is sceptical about home schooling as a credible alternative to formal schooling. Concerns often revolve around lack of socialisation; parents who are not subject specialists and the perception that home schooled children are being isolated from the “real world”. However, home education is the oldest form of education known to man. In modern society, parents are rediscovering this form of education as the surest way to transfer values, principles and knowledge from one generation to the next. Home education provides the best environment to address the unique academic and personal needs of children. No other model of education enables children to receive one-on-one teaching, guidance, and encouragement from their parents who know them intimately and can respond to their individual talents and needs. It also allows for flexible time management, as students are able to work at their own pace in every subject within the limitations of each child’s concentration span or physical ability. Add to that a caring and accepting home environment and you have a winning formula to maximise the potential of children to learn and grow a healthy self-esteem.

When looking at the concern about proper socialisation, this can be ascribed to an incorrect understanding of what the nature of healthy socialisation entails. The contrast is between group socialisation, which teaches how to respond and move with the group; and individual socialisation, which teaches how to deal with other people. You do not develop character in a group. You develop character through one-on-one relationships which are best facilitated within the home. Educated Life NIVEA Sun and SunSavvy getting KZN schools Sun Safe NIVEA Sun and SunSavvy, an organisation created by concerned Durban moms Donna Short and Hayleigh Bott, are on a mission to grow a generation of sun safe and sun educated children, starting with the installation of sunscreen dispensers filled with NIVEA Sun Moisturising Sun Spray SPF 50 in school classrooms and outdoor play areas. The project, named Sun Safe, begins in KwaZulu-Natal, with long term plans to roll out across South Africa. The serviced dispensers will make sunscreen instantly accessible when and where it is needed most. Teachers will be encouraged to make sure children apply sunscreen before going out to play. Children will be educated on the dangers of sunburn and how to keep themselves protected.

The Skin Cancer Foundation of South Africa (SCFSA), who supports the initiative, points out that skin cancer is not only the most common form of cancer worldwide, but South Africa has one of the highest incidences. A child’s skin is thinner than an adult’s and far more sensitive, which means children are vulnerable to more sun damage within a shorter space of time. SunSavvy says that many moms don’t have the time or forget to apply sunscreen before their children leave for school. Even though some mums may send sunscreen to school with their children, it seldom comes out the children’s schoolbags. This leaves children exposed to damaging UV rays at the most dangerous time of day (between 10am and 2pm). Contact: info@besunsafe.co.za or Hayleigh Bott, 082 419 2969. Educated Life Understanding Autism World Autism Awareness Day is on 2 April. Every year, autism organisations around the world celebrate the day with fundraising and awareness-raising events. Autism is a lifelong, complex condition that occurs as a result of disordered brain growth, structure and development. Autism is believed to stem from a genetic predisposition triggered by environmental factors and affects four to five times more boys than girls. There are many ways a person can manifest autism and as a result, this condition is often referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). There are two main types of autism on the spectrum; Kanner/Classic Autism where in addition to the autism, there is also intellectual impairment and Asperger Syndrome, where people display a ‘normal’ or above average intellectual ability.

Relaxed Life The World at Your Fingertips You don’t have to be a geek to appreciate truly cool tech. And while motion-controls have been limited to playing tennis on the Wii and turning media players on with the Microsoft Kinect until now, a new device is going where no device has gone before: true gesture controlled computing. Imagine being able to sculpt, mould, stretch, bend, and build virtual 3D objects. Take things apart and put them back together. Reach into the universe, grab the stars, and soar around the sun. The Leap Motion Controller allows all of this and more. Users can browse the web, read articles, flip through photos, and play music just by lifting a finger; draw, paint, and design with a fingertip; slice falling fruit and shoot bad guys, steer cars and fly planes with your hands.

MURALS

Ross Leah of Mum’s Mail used the Leap Motion Controller and said: “When I received a Leap Motion Controller I was excited at the thought of flicking around pictures and controlling my PC just by moving my hands and fingers. Unfortunately it is not at that point where this is possible yet. It is a fun device but a device that only works with the software and programmes specifically designed for the Leap Motion Controller. The unit itself was easy enough to install, but and I had to download all the applications which took a little while. The product works on both Windows and Mac. I look forward to the next version because I think the product has huge potential.” The Leap Motion is available at Incredible Connection stores or at www.incredible.co.za.

Relaxed Life A Breath of Fresh Air! “Has there ever been anything that you wanted to do more than anything in the world but couldn’t do because the little voices in your head kept saying: it’s too expensive, I am doing it alone, I can’t leave my job and family for that long, what will people think of me, I’m too old for that etc.? Well I had those exact gremlins in my head saying those same things for a while and eventually I decided to put those gremlins to rest. I had a goal in mind – to backpack around Europe and the U.K. Once I had my budget and travel plan sorted, I got the countdown going! My trip consisted of 20 stops and 10 countries. My accommodation consisted mainly of youth hostels (although I’m not a youth). I chose a hop-on hop-off bus tour of Europe, which suited me perfectly. Highlights of my trip were definitely Switzerland (Lautenbrunnen), Austria (Vienna) and Spain (Barcelona) but there were so many other places I visited that the highlights were very hard to choose. I loved Sorrento in Italy and ticked an item off my bucket list by swimming in the Blue Grotto.

I had to ask myself some questions as my trip drew to an end. Was it worth all the money I spent? Yes, definitely, every penny. Do I regret doing it? No, I would have only regretted not doing it. My conclusion to a wonderful trip and memorable experience is that I love my country and I am lucky to be a South African!” Source: Name withheld on request.

Paper Plate Easter Bunny Craft Make your own fluffy Easter Bunny from items around the house! This is a great craft for younger children because the cotton balls are something different to use in a craft and they add a great texture! What you’ll need: • Paper plate • Cotton balls • White poster board or heavy construction paper • Pink construction paper or pink crayon/marker • Black and pink pipe cleaners • Pink pompom • 2 googly eyes • Scissors • White glue How to make your Paper Plate Easter Bunny Craft: • Cut out two ears from the white poster board that are each about 13cm tall and 5cm wide. • Cut out two smaller ears from the pink construction paper. • Glue the smaller ears inside the larger ears, or colour the inside of the larger ears pink. • With the paper plate right side up, glue the ears to the top of the plate so the pink part is facing the table. • Turn the paper plate over. • Cover the plate with glue (tip: using your finger or a paint brush works well to smooth the glue out). • Use the cotton balls to cover the plate. • Glue the googly eyes, pompom (nose) and pipe cleaners on to construct the face of the Easter Bunny. • Bend the pink pipe cleaner into the shape of the bunny’s mouth and glue under nose. *Optional: cut a bowtie out of construction paper and glue on the bottom of the face Source: http://www.allkidsnetwork.com/crafts/easter/ paper-plate-easter-bunny.asp

Charity Life How to Help • The Children’s Hospital Trust celebrates the third annual Plaster Day on 23 May. Funds raised will benefit thousands of sick or injured children treated at this special place of healing. Learners and corporates are encouraged to buy a special sticker and wear civvies. Visit www.childrenshospitaltrust.org.za. • Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve: Arsonists burned down the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve’s education centre. With the loss of the education centre, all audio visual aids have been destroyed. Brochures, posters, banners, tables, chairs, books, display cabinets and years of data and information were lost. The North Durban Honorary Officers of EKZN Wildlife appeal to the community to visit the reserve on the third Saturday of each month, and ask anyone who can donate plastic garden chairs, fold up trestle tables, tarpaulin panels, display cabinets, cupboards, or even help with printing and laminating, to chat to them. Any help will be appreciated. • Tannah’s Gift - Creating Smiles: One in 12 children around the world is born with a cleft lip/palate condition. Parents of five year old Tannah Bloomfield were on medical aid and therefore able to pay for a series of operations to correct the condition. Professor Laurence Chait, at Netcare Park Lane Hospital, has treated hundreds of cleft lip and palate patients, mainly children, since its establishment in 2002. Of the hundreds of operations that Professor Chait and his team have performed in the past 11 years, 350 have been on a pro-bono basis, thanks to the Netcare Foundation and the medical staff and the hospital donating their time, skills and resources to giving these children a chance at a normal life. Professor Chait’s programme is, however, still in need of additional funding, and it was this fact that prompted Tannah’s parents to start Tannah’s Gift, a charity which aims to raise money for those children who are in need of treatment for cleft lip and palate. After their golf day in November 2013 successfully raised R65 000 the golf day will be an annual event. For more info and to be involved contact Professor Chait, 011 – 484 3703, or Judy Bloomfield of Tannah’s Gift, tannahsgift@hondastoneridge.co.za. • HOLAH (House of Love and Hope) Babies’ Home was started by the charity Likhon Ithemba. They have a variety of ongoing needs. Please visit http://likhonithemba. co.za/ongoing-needs to see their list of requirements. For more info or to get involved visit www.likhonithemba.co.za or contact Kim Brown and Leanne Lorrance, kim@ likhonithemba.co.za, leanne@likhonithemba.co.za. • Donate to TAFTA and Help Reduce Abuse against the Elderly: Physical harm’s just one form of abuse which older people suffer. Sometimes they’re locked up, deprived of medical care, their pensions and possessions are stolen from them, they are raped or violated, or their homes taken over. These are just a few of the instances TAFTA deals with. TAFTA leaves no stone unturned to make sure that every older person found to be in a cruel or abusive situation is assisted immediately. TAFTA’s annual street collection will take place on 26 April at various shopping centres in Durban. Every little bit helps! To contribute to this work contact 031 – 332 3721. Send your charity info to sarah@mumsmail.com.

The Mum’s Mail Team wishes all our Christian readers a blessed Easter.

031 - 463 1604

Established in 2003, Mum’s Mail has become one of the most indispensable resources for parents, grandparents, teachers, business owners and other interested readers in Durban and surrounding areas, as well as Pietermaritzburg/Midlands. The targeted, specific distribution (LSM 7 – 10) of our free, full colour monthly magazine to créches, pre-schools, primary schools, shopping malls, family and baby clinics, doctors’ rooms, public libraries and selected retail outlets, ensures that your product or service reaches the right market, on time, every time. Mum’s Mail has proven time and again that it has an exceptional shelf life, which is partly due to its practical, A5 format – it’s the ideal size to pop into your handbag or cubby hole. It really is Life’s Little Toolbox!
