From the Editor’s Desk... What an exciting issue we have in store for you this month! With the April issue, you will have noticed that we have changed the look of the magazine and we really hope that you enjoy our NEW advertorial features that we have introduced. Grab a cuppa, sit down and enjoy a few minutes to yourself, with ‘Life’s Little Toolbox’ in your hands! We are pleased to announce the launch of the Mum’s Mail ‘My Story Creative Writing Competition’, aimed at encouraging creative writing in our children. We hope that lots of schools in KZN will support us with this fun and exciting new initiative, plus there are some wonderful prizes to be won! Read more about this fantastic competition on page 28. The excitement builds this month for our 6th Annual PMB Ladies Breakfast in association with The Sunflower Fund, which takes place on Friday 12th April 2019 at the Victoria Country Club, PMB. You can keep up to date on this event, photos and fashion ideas, by visiting our Facebook page @Mum’s Mail High Tea or by signing up to our weekly e-newsletter. We had such a fun photo shoot with Penny Katz Photography, which took place at the ‘Billy G’ restaurant at Suncoast, Durban. Everyone made such an effort and dressed to the ‘Fifties’ theme – we can’t wait to get our groove on with some ‘Grease’ inspired décor and entertainment! This month is also Easter, which means we all hopefully get to spend extra time with our loved ones, to relax, recuperate and revive our souls. My family and I are planning on a camping trip to the Drakensberg, and we will also be visiting the Splashy Fen Festival while we’re there – it was so much fun last year, I just hope it stays nice and dry – but apparently it’s not called ‘Splashy’ for nothing! Wishing our lovely readers and fabulous advertisers a wonderful and very Happy Easter! Thank you one and all for your support.

Gooderson DumaZulu Lodge and Traditional Village

is Back on the Map

In July 2018, Gooderson DumaZulu Lodge and Traditional Village experienced a large fire which caused extensive damage at the popular resort.

The dining room, the bar, the conference room, the boma and the kitchen were completely destroyed by the blaze.

“Gooderson Leisure are delighted to announce that the construction of the new look, bar, dining area, boma and kitchen are now completed. The dining area was constructed around what once was the focal shady tree in the outdoor seating area. All the décor, from lighting to the huge painting in the dining room was created by local artists and crafters and the finished design is bright, airy, authentic, open and truly welcoming,” says CEO, Gavin Castleman.

bar provides a place to share stories of the day, after which you can make your way in just a few steps to the stunning dining room and then head out to relax at the new Boma area around the camp fire’s flickering flames. So be sure to head to DumaZulu Lodge and Traditional Village which also offers the most authentic Zulu cultural experience in Southern Africa. In a Zulu kraal forming part of a ‘living museum’, you will witness the manufacturing of spears, shields, clay pots, intricate beadwork, basketweaving, the magic of the sangoma (witch doctor), bonethrowing and spectacular Zulu dances.

I recently went on a trip to DumaZulu and can honestly say that it is all it’s cracked up to be! We experienced a spectacular game drive, where we saw 3 of the Big 5, visited the bird and reptile park, where I got to hold a huge Burmese python and had an amazing tour of the Zulu village. The Mental Health

Benefits of Exercise

The mental health benefits of becoming more physically active are becoming more and more prevalent. In this article, Kieran Alger explores the mental health benefits of exercise.

everything can feel overwhelming. Time to crawl into a hole? In fact, the more stressed out you feel, the more you need to look after yourself – and a workout can be the happiest medicine. Research has shown that exercise is clinically proven to stimulate serotonin, your natural feelgood neurotransmitter.

How do you feel after a workout? Even when you’re purple faced and desperate for a lie-down, you feel pretty pleased with yourself for giving it a go, right? Once the initial breathlessness subsides after a workout, it’s common to feel like you “A prescription of have more energy and those exercise can help you troublesome problems might have a healthy mind,” not seem quite so big as before. Hayley Jarvis, programme manager for sport at the mental health charity Mind. “Being active is one of the best things you can do to help yourself bounce back in times of adversity. Getting out of your head and into your body can actually improve your ability to think clearly and break up your racing thoughts.” Find your mood-boosting workout If the thought of hauling yourself out of bed to jump around feels as impossible as climbing Everest, start slow. You can always stop if you’re not feeling it, but all it takes is a few minutes of low-intensity exercise – even just walking – to trigger the release of pain-relieving endorphins. Every stretch releases tension and every movement makes oxygen flow a little faster. Ultimately, the key is to find a workout you enjoy, because then you’ll want to keep doing it. After exercise, take a moment to notice how your mood has lifted. The bright, calm satisfaction you get after your workout will keep you coming back for more. You’ll get hooked on the feel-good benefits of exercise, not just the physical results. Source: Joe Wicks, www.thebodycoach.com.

Boils: Carbuncles, Furuncles & “Natal Sores”

A boil is a skin infection caused by the germs (staphylococcal bacteria) that usually live on the surface of our skin. These Staphs enter the deeper layers through a scratch, cut or insect bite and travel down the hair to the hair follicle or oil gland. Once the bacteria seals itself off from oxygen, it proliferates and the skin becomes red and tender. After four to seven days, the lump starts turning white as pus collects under the skin. Children usually develop boils easier than adults, because they often pick their noses and then scratch their itchy bites, leading to a huge amount of bacteria that enters the broken

skin. They often present with several boils in a group, called a carbuncle - especially in the armpits and on the buttocks.

The best way to treat a carbuncle or furuncle (boil) is to expose the Staphs to oxygen. Just making a prick in the soft centre of it is not sufficient and might even cause the germs to spread to the healthy skin around it. Your GP needs to make a proper cut and clean out the puss, leaving a plug with Betadine inside that can be removed the next morning. The local anaesthetic works

within five seconds, making it easy to get to the bottom of the problem. In KZN, Staph infections are more common due to the high humidity and the term “Natal sores” were given to these superficial, patchy areas of broken skin with yellow crust. Impetigo - another term used for superficial Staph infections needs to be treated aggressively with antibiotics; preferably a 10 day course! Source: Dr Deseré Ferreira, www.umhlangagp.net.

‘My Story’ Creative

Writing Competition Mum’s Mail is passionate about nurturing creativity in children, and so we have launched the ‘My Story’ writing competition to promote creative writing for children in schools, Grades 1 to 7, in KZN.

Creativity is the highest valued ability in all areas of life and with this in mind the ‘My Story’ competition seeks to encourage creative writing in a fun and exciting way. Writing has many benefits for children - studies show that children who practice creative writing more often are generally better in other subjects too - like maths, science, and languages. Creative writing can help children develop imagination and creativity, selfexpression, self-confidence and communication skills. Kids have the most amazing imaginations, and we should encourage our children to write and use that imagination, and in so doing build their confidence to communicate their feelings, thoughts and opinions.

There will be two winners, one from each category: Category 1 (Grades 1-3) and Category 2 (Grades 4-7).

“In today’s world, more than ever, creativity is valued. We want to see our children growing up to be creators and not just consumers. schools buy into the competition and we have had great feedback from our initial work with principals. We aim for any child from any school to be able to enter. All the entrants will be winners in our eyes but the prizes will go to the stories judged the most creative, rather than ‘polished’ - it’s not a grammar competition after all! We can’t wait to read the stories, good luck everybody and enjoy!” Darren Maule, East Coast Radio Breakfast Show Host, is looking forward to visiting the winners’ schools to read out their stories and had a message for all the budding young writers. “The only thing better than living, is living in a world that you have created. And writing allows you to do that.”

The Importance of

Occupational Therapy for Children Autism Awareness Day is on 2 April and we would like to give you some insight into Occupational Therapy. The early stages of your child’s life are crucial to their future. In their early development physical, cognitive and social skill sets begin to form. Not every child is successful in making it past these developmental milestones. Some do not mature as they should and have delayed or restricted advancements. Occupational Therapists study human development and a person’s interactions with the environment through daily activities. They are experts in the social, emotional, and physiological effects of illness and injury. This knowledge helps them promote skills

learn to swim the fun way! Swimming is a life skill. Here in SA we are surrounded by water – rivers, dams, seas and pools. Sadly, drowning is still one of the major causes of death amongst toddlers. This NEED NOT BE the statistic! If we introduce water to our toddlers in a fun way – splashing in puddles, splashing in their bath or shower, blowing bubbles etc. – from a very young age we can work together to build a watersafe, water-wise and waterenthusiastic country! Odette Randelhoff, winner of the Star Swim Teacher of the Year Award 2018, has been www.mumsmail.com

teaching swimming for over 30 years. She is a strong believer in safety at all times but also encourages play time amongst swimmers of all ages and swimming abilities. This life skill will ensure that your toddler is safe when going to a pool party, a visit to a friend with a pool, or to the dam or sea with family. Odette says that this summer has seen record high temperatures, which has made it fun for families to spend many hours in home or public pools. The school system will stop swimming soon when they start their winter sports programme, 32

but Odette encourages parents to enrol their toddlers and young children in extra mural swim lessons to extend their learning opportunity. Why Team Sports are a Win

for Your Little Champ

Some kids are natural born athletes… and then you get the little ones who need a little more persuading to take to the field. Whether your child is a Messi in-the-making, or is anti-activity at the best of times – here’s how sports will help your little ones become champs at life. They’ll learn how to get along with others – even those they don’t like Children who are a part of a team learn to overlook - and work with - those who they might not necessarily like off the field. Teammates learn to accept one another’s differences and really root for each other at the end of the day. They’ll learn the benefits of friendly competition Respect is one of the most important things your child will learn as part of a team. They’ll learn to play fair, respect their teammates, and of course,

respect their coach’s and captain’s decisions. And while being competitive is not a bad thing, it’s respect that’ll encourage friendly competition amongst happy, secure children. They’ll learn the skills to become future leaders Organised team sports teach children the discipline, patience, respect and focus that will take them beyond extramural sports, and well into their working careers. They don’t have to be number 1 gold medalists season after season, but just being part of a team and balancing school life with sports is what will harness a good work ethic that will take them far. They’ll learn that you don’t always win On the field is where kids will

start learning that life isn’t fair – and that there’s times when you win, and there’s time when you lose. This is where they’ll learn the importance of endurance, perseverance and always trying their best at whatever they do. They’ll discover their strengths and capabilities When it comes to sports, every sporting legend had to start somewhere. And the same applies to your little athlete. As they grow as athletes, so will their self-confidence. Mastering a skill, sport or even a position on the field will boost their confidence – and give them the self-assurance they need to take on challenges later in life. Source: www.mrpsport.com.

Easter bunny crafts clothing peg easter bunnies

Materials: • Pegs • Glue • Wooden skewers • White paint (I used spray paint) • Cardboard or thick paper to draw faces First, paint your clothing pegs white. Then draw little bunny faces onto card and cut them out. Once the pegs are dry, paint in or draw in the pink ears. When dry, stick on the faces. Then peg it onto the top of a wooden skewer. The wooden skewer allows you to stick them in-between your flowers. Tulips work especially well…

Hand Print Bunny

Materials: • Card stock • Non-toxic paint • Googly eyes • String for whiskers • Pom-poms for noses First, print your hands. We made sure only to put paint onto our hand and two fingers - Ruby Ring and Peter Pointer! These fingers make the best ears! Then, once the paint was dry we added eyes, whiskers and a nose – in that order. (The nose covers up the ends of the whiskers!) We used googly eyes, but you could make your own or paint them on! We used both pompoms and felt for noses! Your choice! Source: www.emmaowl.com.

Book Review:

Space IQ by Priddy Books

I was very excited when we were sent this book to review – it just looked like a really fun book – and it is!

Space IQ by Priddy Books is a fascinating look at planets, stars, space exploration and more. Take off on a mindboggling mission to discover the secrets of the universe! The book comes in a handy fold out box set that includes an activity (five card sheets with pop-out pieces to build a solar system model), a space fact book and a giant poster with info on planets and space travel. I was worried this book would be too old for my son Oliver (5)

www.mumsmail.com

but he absolutely loves it! We made the solar system right away - this required a lot of help from me, but it looks awesome hanging in his room and he’s super proud of it. As for the book – its filled with interesting facts about space and space travel, and he can already name all the planets. We have to read it all the time, but it never gets boring. Of course the giant poster looks super cool in his room and he boasts about it to his friends!

46

This book is fun and informative and I would recommend it for all kids, young and old. We loved it so much that we went and got one as a birthday gift for a friend. In my opinion this is the best type of gift - so much better than a toy that will be forgotten about in a few weeks (moms, you know what I mean)! Visit www.priddybooks. com/tag/south-africa/ for more info. Review by Sarah Mackintosh.
