Meet the Cover Stars
As is tradition, in December we feature the fabulous Mum’s Mail team on our cover! It has been a busy year at Mum’s Mail HQ with a few changes – most notably the launch of our Johannesburg – East Rand magazine in June, and the launch of our new website in November. Mum’s Mail has been through many other positive changes this year which include the expansion of our online presence and the introduction of the new glossy paper for PMB and JHB mags. Victoria and Andrew Arthur are our dynamic leaders! Victoria is our editor who promotes the business tirelessly, using her charm, fabulous singing voice, and gregarious personality wherever she goes. Andrew is a little shy and prefers to be behind the scenes running the business side of things, being our ‘voice of reason’ at the office. They have two awesome kids, and of course Nunu, their rescue dog. Daniella, runs the accounts department – and so much more… She doubles up in many other roles and is a “Jack of all trades” in the office! Dan loves baking and cooking and was once upon a time a chef!

Sarah is the sub-editor and spends her time tapping away on the keyboard writing stories - when she’s not chasing after her four-year-old son. She loves reading, socialising and spending time with her family. Her happy place is the beach.
The newest member of the team is Anisha our new sales rep. Unfortunately she joined the team too late to make the cover pic. She is very sweet natured and has fitted in well with the rest of the team. Anisha has one Melinda is our Johannesburg Regional daughter. Manager and looks after all our East Rand advertisers. Travel Hacks: Part 2
Pack a ‘travel kit’ to keep in your hand luggage with wipes, gum, a sweet or savory snack, plasters, tissues, moisturiser and mini deodorant or perfume sample, to keep you going during your journey.
Less is more; pack a zip-lock of some washing detergent and half way through your trip or if you are in a location for more than two nights, do some hand washing – smalls, vests and tops. That way you pack less as you can wear items more than once and it’s MUCH more cost effective than room laundry services. Hang them to dry in the bathroom with the light on, there is often an extractor fan and it speeds the drying process.
Travel with a power bank. Screenshot all the names and contact details of you accommodations or bookings before you leave so that if you don’t have Wi-Fi, you still have the information handy. If the departures entrance is near the arrivals – get a cab from there, as the queue is always quicker and taxis arrive constantly to drop off travellers.
Be realistic – there is nothing worse than lugging around stuff you don’t need and forgetting the bits you do. Make a list – that way you don’t have to remember. Try to make sure your bag is 2kgs under the required amount so that you have room to Take a few plastic shopping bags to keep add more on your journey. your shoes in should they get dirty or wet. Wonderful Waffles at Stacks Eatery If you haven’t been to Stacks Eatery in Umhlanga, then you are missing out. Their gorgeous decadent ‘Stacked Waffles’ are an experience waiting to be tried. I went with my family recently for a Sunday brunch, where I met Paul, the owner. Both hubby and I had the savoury waffles, whereas the children opted for the sweet waffles, of course! Andrew had the Caramelised Onion & Spicy Beef Sausage and I had the Beef Burger Napolitano Chilli Chutney Stacked Waffles. The presentation was beautiful, so out came everyone’s phones to take numerous photographs! They have recently expanded their menu which included adding more vegetarian options, so there really is something for everyone!

Snowman Ornament Keepsake
Christmas is always a great time for crafts - there are so many wonderful things to enjoy making and creating with your children. It’s always great fun to make and your family and friends will always love receiving them! You will need: • Salt dough (recipe below) • Straw • Ribbon/string • Acrylic paints • Marker pen • Rolling pin • Paint brushes To make the salt dough: • 1 cup salt • 2 cups plain flour • ¾ cup boiling water Add salt and plain flour to bowl, gradually adding hot water. Mix together until a dough forms, making sure it is not too sticky. Knead the dough. Roll out a large enough area to make two handprints. Be mindful of how thick the salt dough is - you want the plaque to be thick enough to make it sturdy but not too thick that you are waiting weeks for it to dry out. You may want to add some holes using a straw so you can thread some string through and hang it up. Place it in the oven at 120 degrees for around three hours. Begin by adding the snow at the bottom and painting the hand prints white. Then add the blue sky and leave to dry. Add some detail to the snowmen using a fine paintbrush and a marker pen. Give the snowmen hats, scarves, faces and buttons and add some falling snow to complete the effect. Source: www.learningandexploringthroughplay. com. www.mumsmail.com

A Bee Friendly Garden
Recent research tells us that natural homes for bees are becoming less in abundance, which means that planting a bee-friendly garden should become a priority when planning one. Interestingly enough, bee-friendly gardens also contribute to increasing bee varieties.
If you are considering planting a vegetable patch, another bonus you can look forward to is a bountiful harvest of vegetables, as much of the heavy work of pollinating vegetable crops is done by honey bees. If you have a garden already and would like to start creating a bee-friendly haven, then doing so isn’t as complicated as you may think. Here are a few tips which will assist you in your quest to positively impact the environment: Choose plants that attract bees: This is fairly self-explanatory but there are certain plants that are more attractive to bees than
others. These plants include the likes of basil, sage, thyme, lavender, watermelons, cucumbers and pumpkin. Group the same plants together: If you have the space, try to plant at least one square metre of the same type of plant together. Pick plants with long blooming cycles: This will keep the bees coming back to your garden. Let your plants flower: Leave the flowers on your plants, this will allow the honeybees to get the pollen and nectar they need. Fresh water source: Any shallow water source will do; a bird bath, a waterfall, a pool or even newly watered potted plants are good for bees. Already starting to quake at the thought of the kids moaning “I’m bored!” five seconds into the first day of the school holidays? Here are 12 fun activities to keep them occupied without leaving the comfort of home sweet home. Hold a cupcake/cookie decorating competition. A cupcake or cookie decorating competition is the perfect way to keep the kids amused for a few hours AND sort afternoon tea. Enjoy a movie marathon. A rainy day is the perfect time to organise a movie marathon. Perhaps choose a movie series such as Spy Kids or movies with a theme, such as space, nature or comedy. Organise a bug hunt in the backyard. There’s no better way for kids to learn about the world around them than by getting out into it. Bug hunting encourages children to explore their own backyard in an openended way that will lead to adventures and imaginative play. Let the kids loose in your wardrobe to put on a fashion parade. They’re guaranteed to think it’s hilarious and fun. Place a lamp at each end of the hallway, grab the camera and pop on some fun music - then let the kids get creative. Turn the dining table into a fort. Help the kids create a table tent with sheets, rugs and tablecloths and it will become their own little sanctuary where they can do whatever they please. Have a craft day. Every mum knows there’s a world of imaginative fun in the craft box, so get those creative juices flowing and see what you can make out of stuff you can find around the home. Grow a herb garden. Herbs are fun to grow and your kids will love having their own garden to tend. They’re easy to grow from seed, requiring little patience as some herbs, like cress and rocket, should start to sprout in as little as two days! Hold a LEGO building contest. Put that tub of LEGO to use and challenge the kids to each build a house - with a 30-minute time

Financial Detox: Tips to Healthier Finances
Being healthy is essential. And while physical and emotional health is equally important to a woman’s overall wellbeing, ladies tend to forget that their finances also need pampering. When you are in an unhealthy financial position, your financial situation and money woes can cause a huge dip in your general health.

Dr Des @ Home: 2018 New Year, Healthier You! New Year’s resolutions are a bit like babies: They’re fun to make but extremely difficult to maintain. This year, pick one of the following worthy resolutions and stick with it!
Dr Deseré Ferreira & Assoc.
General and Aesthetics MD
Lose weight: Start off with drinking more water and cutting the carbs and alcohol. Do your basic blood test and get help from your GP/dietician while you are still enthusiastic! Stay in touch: It’s good for your health to reconnect with family and friends. Research suggests people with strong social ties live longer than those who don’t. Quit smoking: Do you fear that you’ve failed too many times to try again? Talk to any ex-smoker, and you’ll see that multiple attempts are often the path to success. Try different methods to find out what works and think of the cash you’ll save!
Botox • Fillers • Acne • Peels • Excision of moles • Family meds • Depression • Weightloss • Child health • Women’s health Umhlanga Hospital Medical Centre, Ground Floor Tel: 031 582 5303
Save money: Save money by making healthy lifestyle changes: Walk or ride your bicycle to work, cut back on gym membership costs by exercising at home: dance with your children for 15 minutes every day! Take stock of what you have in the fridge and make a grocery list of clean basic items. Cut your stress: Long working hours and little sleep contribute to stress. Chronic stress can increase your risk of insomnia, depression, obesity and heart disease. Relaxation, sleep, socialising and taking vacations are all things we tell ourselves we deserve but don’t allow ourselves to have. Travel more! The joys and rewards of vacations can last long after the suitcase is put away. May 2018 be a healthy one!

World AIDS Day World AIDS Day takes place on 1 December each year. It’s an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, to show support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness. Founded in 1988, World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day. Why is World AIDS Day important? Globally, there are an estimated 36.7 million people who have the virus. Despite the virus only being identified in 1984, more than 35 million people have died of HIV or AIDS, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history.

South Africa has the highest population of people living with HIV and AIDS and the disease has claimed thousands of lives leaving behind many AIDS orphans. Creating HIV and AIDS awareness helps educate people on how to avoid the spread of the disease. Today, scientific advances have been made in HIV treatment, there are laws to protect people living with HIV and we understand so much more about the condition. Despite this, many people do not know the facts about how to protect themselves and others, and stigma and discrimination remain a reality for many people living with the condition. World AIDS Day is important because it reminds the public and government that HIV has not gone away - there is still a vital need to raise money, increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education.

World Braille Day
The KwaZulu-Natal Blind and Deaf Society is a leading service provider in the field of Blindness and Deafness in KwaZulu-Natal. World Braille Day is commemorated annually on 4 January to celebrate the invention of Braille and the importance of Braille to those who are blind. Braille was created by Louis Braille, born in France on 4 January 1809. Braille is the key to literacy, education, employment and inclusion for persons who are blind. World Braille Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness on the issues faced by people who are blind and to advocate for equal access to the same reading and learning opportunities as their sighted counterparts. The KwaZulu-Natal Blind and Deaf Society was established in 1936, and their purpose is to provide services and opportunities that ultimately improve the quality of life of Blind and Partially-Sighted people. During the 1960s they extended their services to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing people.

The society currently reaches the poor, unemployed African people living in rural areas who do not have the finances or ability to receive services. The greatest challenge that the society faces, is how to improve these individuals’ quality of life. The sad situation is that these almost forgotten people are not only deprived, but also disabled, which leaves them feeling very inadequate and incapable, and the sad fact is that most of them receive no external assistance. There are many ways that you can support the KwaZulu-Natal Blind and Deaf Society: • Cash donations • Debit order donations • Donations in kind • Collection tins • Order their personal or corporate diary • Leave a bequest Visit www.bdskzn.org.za for more information.

The Benefits of Hippotherapy
Healthy Life
Emma Wijnberg is an Occupational Therapist who practices Hippotherapy using Raz (a small, round pony). “The results I see are phenomenal, particularly in children with special needs, as well as those that struggle with difficulties such as ADHD and poor posture,” says Emma. Hippotherapy refers to how therapists (speech, OT and physio) reach therapeutic goals, using the purposeful manipulation of a horse’s movement to engage sensory, neuromotor, and cognitive systems to achieve functional outcomes. It is not a riding lesson - the aim is to improve function, using the movement of the horse.
“In my experience, Hippotherapy is the most effective treatment modality to help children develop core strength, motor planning, coordination, sensory modulation, self-confidence, concentration, emotional regulation and even speech. Horses seem to get everything working better, whilst the children are having fun!” concludes Emma.

The horse’s unique movement activates the sensory system and helps the brain write new neural pathways. For each step the horse takes, the child has to adjust their balance eight times. In a half-hour session, the child gets the equivalent of 2 000 to 3 000 steps! The horse’s inimitable movement targets every aspect of the neurological system. Sudden stops and starts, changes of direction, etc., all challenge the child’s balance, trunk stability and posture. This input cannot be replicated by anything on the ground.

Breastfeeding Provides Solutions “Prematurity is one of the three major causes of new-born deaths in South Africa, with diarrhoea and respiratory infections being the main causes of sickness and death in children younger than five years old,” says Stasa Jordan, breastfeeding activist and executive director of the South African Breastmilk Reserve (SABR). “The simple act of breastfeeding can reduce infant mortality by a third and sickness by half,” she continues.
South Africa pioneered the human milkbanking initiative for premature infants in 2003. Strong advocacy and the rapid expansion of the initiative over the last 14 years led to the national adoption of The Tshwane Declaration of Support for Breastfeeding in South Africa. Today, South Africa provides a variety of human milk-banking initiatives, collectively supporting an estimated 5 000 infants per annum. Despite the significant improvement in exclusive breastfeeding rates from 8% in 2003 to 32% in 2016, approximately 11 000 babies die in their first month of life in South Africa. “Many of these cases are preventable if symptoms are detected and treated early through the provision of human breastmilk,” says Dr Louw.
“Whilst most new mothers do not experience difficulty in lactating, not all mothers are able to initiate lactation after premature labour, often being too ill to lactate or requiring intensive care themselves. During this time, human milk banks across the country give premature babies that are at high risk of suffering from sepsis and Necrotising Enterocolitis, access For more information or to get involved to this life-saving food when they need it visit www.sabr.org.za or call most,” explains Dr Coenie Louw, CEO of the 011 - 482 1920 or e-mail info@sabr.org.za. Solutions for Dark Under-Eye Circles
We are all familiar with the expression, “the eyes are the window to the soul”. The eyes give away a whole lot of information about a person.
Looking at the eyes or the eye area can quickly reveal your age, whether you’re tired or stressed, whether you laugh a lot and also whether or not you use good quality anti-ageing products. One of the most common complaints or concerns when it comes to treating the eye area is dark circles. Dark under-eye circles, in most cases, are caused by a combination of factors including poor drainage (and poor blood flow), thinning skin, high-stress levels and a lack of sleep, to name but a few. There are a number of effective treatments to improve dark circles, including:

• Laser Genesis improves circulation, colour and texture and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. • Carboxytherapy, which is arguably one of the most versatile therapies within medical aesthetics, can act on blood and lymphatic circulation, it can be used to target fatty pockets, and it can stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, causing a tightening effect in the skin. • Dermal Fillers replace volume to remove the “sunken, gaunt” look under the eyes. • PDO threads strengthen the skin while promoting collagen and elastin formation. The thread also results in improved circulation around the eye area. To find out more visit Skin Renewal at www.skinrenewal.co.za or contact one of the branches in Durban on 0861 SKIN SA.

Radiant Holiday Skin
Doris Coetzer from Skin Evolution has some tips for the summer holidays to keep your skin in good shape. Firstly, book a deep cleansing and revitalising facial treatment. This is a brilliant way to get you to unwind and enjoy a little me-time. You can also address some of your skin concerns such as breakouts, dryness and pigmentation. The facial also increases blood circulation and aids skin cell renewal which ensures a healthy and rejuvenated glow. Next up, it is incredibly important to focus on skin hydration and nourishment. Use a reputable moisturiser in the mornings and evenings that is packed with hyaluronic acid, peptides and anti-oxidants. Think of it as water, nourishment and a multivitamin for the skin to keep it healthy and happy. At least once a week, exfoliate your skin to get rid of the dead skin cells. You can choose a granular exfoliator to polish and smooth the skin or a chemical acid based exfoliator that penetrates a bit deeper into the skin and

helps the skin cell renewal process from the inside out. After the exfoliation, don’t forget to add a little love by applying a mask. Last but not least, protect your skin. This is one of the most important steps to ensure that you don’t get sunburned but it is also your first step to prevent premature skin ageing. Use a sunscreen daily of SPF20 or higher and don’t forget to reapply throughout the day. Be SunSmart this Summer
Each year during the hot summer months, CANSA steps up its skin cancer awareness communication through its SunSmart Campaign, to remind South Africans of the dangers of over-exposure to the sun. Running from mid-November to January, the campaign includes beach, workplace and school activations, as well as sharing education online on CANSA’s platforms. CANSA reminds all South Africans to be SunSmart throughout the year and especially during summer, as skin cancer remains one of the most common cancers. South Africa has the second highest incidence of skin cancer in the world after Australia, and in particular one of the highest incidences of melanoma worldwide, as far as Caucasians are concerned. At least 20 000 South Africans are diagnosed annually with nonmelanoma skin cancers, and approximately 1 500 are diagnosed with melanoma.
everyone, regardless of racial or ethnic group, is at risk of getting skin cancer. Although people with darker skins are less susceptible, because their skin contains more natural melanin that protects against sun damage, everyone is at risk from the harsh African sun. Just one blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence more than doubles a person’s chances of developing melanoma later in life. Children should not be getting sunburned at any age, especially since there are a range of very effective sun protection methods that can be used. Minimise time outside during summer when UV levels are at their strongest – between 10am and 3pm. Parents and guardians need to be extra vigilant about sun protection for their infants and toddlers at all times.

Relaxation Ideas for Busy Parents
This parenting gig is tough work! We can get so caught up in meeting our family’s needs that sometimes we neglect our own. Here are some relaxation ideas for busy parents.
While you’re at home with the kids Get out of the house and breathe some fresh air. Put in an exercise or yoga DVD. Invite your children to participate. Stay away from social media and the computer when the children are around. Something happens to our brains when we’re distracted by electronics. It’s easier to lose patience and sometimes, our temper. Play with some clay or play dough (it can be so relaxing and therapeutic). Do some gardening. Watch a movie with the kids. After the kids are in bed, have a date night at home. Open some wine, make some popcorn, play a board game, or watch a
movie. Get creative and enjoy a special evening with your spouse! When someone else is watching the kids Go for a haircut, manicure, and/or massage. Treat yourself to a hot beverage and a good book at a local coffee shop. Explore the local art gallery. Peruse a bookstore. Now is the time to go clothes shopping. Go to the gym (a good workout can lead to a more relaxed mind afterwards). Go swimming. Enjoy a relaxing steam or hot tub afterwards. Go out for dinner or lunch. Get your car professionally cleaned and enjoy a magazine and treat while waiting. Go for a nature walk. Go to a movie! Go on a date with your spouse. Make a pact to NOT talk about the kids. Teaching Independence from an Early Age Grade R, a critical year to establish the fundamentals of a child’s capacity to become a life-long learner, is essentially a bridging year from pre-school, where children are still considered “little ones”, to formal schooling. It is around this time when a child begins to develop a sense of independence and thus starts taking responsibility for their behavioural outcomes.

Active Children Learn Better
In a world that seems to be so dominated by “screen time it seems that physical activity and ability is becoming more of the exception than the norm.
Today, due to many factors, socio-economic, family dynamics, single parent homes, security factors and many more - the opportunity for children to be active seems to be dwindling. Often it is easier to offer a screen and get on with the evening routine. Time also plays an important role - often parents don’t have any. Research shows that active children do learn better. Children are kinetic, constantly moving and learning. They learn through the lesson or material connecting with them holistically, involving the whole body in the learning process, producing a much more educationally beneficial experience for them. At preschool level being active is extremely important, in fact at any school level, but in the formative years it is imperative that children are active during the school day.
www.mumsmail.com
Engaging the child in physical activities increases their ability to concentrate and improves their general wellbeing. A more positive outlook is developed, and more difficult tasks are tackled with enthusiasm. Playground time and playing is equally as important as class time. Simple games can be played using hoola hoops, bean bags and hopscotch. Climbing on the jungle gym, using the monkey bars, playing ball games and swinging on swings encourages large muscle growth, hand and foot/eye coordination, cross body movement, establishes dominance and improves blood flow to the brain. The result is that we have children that pay more attention, have improved memory retention, and attention and confidence to tackle tasks and creativity - all essential to learning in the classroom space.

Choose a Private School: It’s Worth It!
Individual Attention. The value of personal attention is immeasurable, especially in the preschool and primary years. A good private school will offer small classes with the low student to teacher ratio, giving each student the individual attention they need. Safe Environment. A good private school will have a code of conduct that is enforced effectively, thus minimising discipline issues, bullying and maintaining a high standard of self-respect and a caring attitude toward others. The low staff to pupil ratio allows for more effective observation and the encouragement of active communication in resolving disagreements. Children who learn and develop in a safe environment have a higher success rate after matriculation. Academic Excellence. Private schools exceed government curriculum minimum requirements with different and more progressive methods of teaching as they are accountable to achieve the parents’ desired results. In smaller classrooms the teacher has the chance to address learning
difficulties/issues as they occur. Cultural Values. Choose a school whose culture and philosophy matches the beliefs at home; teaching and reinforcing your values and morals on a daily basis. Government schools have to keep religion out of the classroom. Private schools can teach religious beliefs according to the mission and vision of the school in a nurturing environment. Holistic Approach. A balanced programme with quality resources in academics, sports and extra-murals will meet the pupils’ interests and needs. Children who participate in athletic activities focus better in the classroom. Pupils are given the opportunity to participate in extramural activities that could include the unique experience of outreach into the local community, thereby growing your child into a valuable and contributing member of society. It is time to get your back-to-school budget ready before spending on those silly season extras. Experts say school items are cheapest during November and December. Zeeva highlights that it is indeed wise to do school shopping before January, but make sure that the items you buy are on discount. Here are a few things to also take into account: Uniforms. Tough, uncertain economic times are not making life any easier, as the rand tumbles, the price of school uniforms will also go up. Zeeva encourages you to make the best financial choice when it comes to school uniforms. Do your homework and compare prices before buying the necessary clothing or uniform for your kid(s). Stationery. School materials are unavoidable expenses that you should budget for. And, as highlighted - you can make the most affordable choice by doing research (comparing prices). Look at the wellknown shops and don’t forget to consider online options. Some schools also provide stationery packs which are convenient, but make sure that the price is not exorbitant. Additional costs. That’s not all folks – also keep those extras in mind that you have to budget for during the rest of the 2018 year, such as electronic devices, textbooks, sports clothing, and school trips. Be sure to include all the necessaries for the back-to-school budget as well as the month-to-month addons. Prepare yourself mentally (and your pocket, financially) in advance. Affordability of Education is a Concern for Many
The cost of education in South Africa remains a hotly debated issue, as the reality of affordability impacts many parents and students – regardless of whether the focus is on public or private schooling or tertiary education fees.
While Government has managed to freeze fee increases in tertiary environments, the reality is that many students still don’t qualify for state-funded financial aid, and many parents are facing the burden of financially preparing themselves for the high cost of tertiary education, says Sanlam adviser Kevin Singh. He points out that education costs typically increase at a higher rate than general inflation (CPI). Historically, this rate has been between 2% and 4% above general inflation. Following the protests last year, the Department of Higher Education has capped fee increases at 8% for students who aren’t eligible for fee increase subsidies.
possible education is the biggest dream most mothers have for their children, regardless of their age or income. At the same time, 1 in 4 parents are not saving anything towards their children’s education – which means that these dreams may not be realised in the future as the costs keep rising. Kevin says whether you decide to put all that you can afford towards primary and secondary school or to save for the future costs of your children’s post-school interests instead, there is no question that you’ll need to spend a considerable amount of money somewhere, given the high cost of education in South Africa. Considering the fact that in 2016 one year of studying towards a BCom degree at one of SA’s top universities cost anything between about R30 000 and R62 500, a child starting Grade 1 in 2017 and going to university in 2029 will pay a minimum of R81 600 per year, assuming an increase in education costs of 8% per year. This excludes residence fees, meals, books and other administration costs.
As a parent, you don’t need any reminding of how important it is to start planning and saving today for your child’s future. Will you be able to give your children the best education, to ensure the best opportunities?
Although the high costs associated with seeing children through elementary school and beyond are not a uniquely South African challenge, affordability is an issue for the majority of parents in this country. A Sanlam study conducted amongst mothers with children aged between 3 and 15 years showed that some parents hold down two jobs to put their children through private schooling, which they perceive to be the best legacy they can give their children.
We know how dedicated you are to providing for them and how much effort you put into ensuring that they can look forward to the comfortable future they deserve.
Our study showed that having the best

How to Replace Screen Time with Foundational Reading Skills Most parents are very aware that too much screen time for young children isn’t a good thing, but many are just as uncertain about what exactly the problem is and, importantly, how time can be more constructively spent without it becoming an additional daily burden adding to the stress of the adults. Barbara Eaton, Academic Development Advisor for the Pre-Primary Schools Division at ADvTECH, Africa’s largest private education provider, says parents who rely on some screen time to get a bit of a breather shouldn’t feel guilty, but adds that they should ensure they also spend time every day connecting with their children through activities. Activities, which are both fun and will aid the cementing of the skills they will require for reading success in future, can be woven into the daily routine. So how can parents help their children? By talking and listening. In these days of digital media, we are talking less to each other and much of the communication taking place is instructive: “It’s time to bath. Pick up your clothes,” etc. Instead, try to focus on generating discussions, for instance talk about the highs and lows of your day; introduce topics. Eaton says it is important to ask openended questions (which don’t have a yes or no response), to elicit full answers. Dads are especially good at this! By reading to their child. Read both fiction and factual books from a very young age and join the library to give a wider choice. Choose quality stories that link to your child’s interests, not just Disney ones, Eaton advises. Let your child see you reading books and magazines. When you read a menu, shopping list, or road sign, involve your child and discuss how wonderful it is to be able to read and understand the information around you.” By singing and reciting. Sing songs, recite rhymes together and read poems. “Rhyming is such an important pre-reading skill, but fewer and fewer children learn any rhymes at home. Nursery rhymes are basically historical nonsense but children love them and they are easy to memorise,” Eaton says. Play with words. Play with compound words - breaking popcorn into pop and corn, fishtank into fish and tank, etc. They make good car games, and make a walk to the shops shorter and more fun. ‘I Spy’ is another fun favourite but use the sound at the beginning of the word, not the name of the letter. Cat starts with ‘c’ not CEE. Eaton says activities as listed above should be fun for adults and child, and should not become another chore for parents, but rather an easy, entertaining way to connect as they go through their usual routine in the morning and the evening. Play Matters The importance of play to a young child’s healthy development and learning has been documented beyond question by research. Yet play is disappearing in many early education centres and is being replaced by worksheets and structured teaching of literacy and numeracy skills! Play does not mean anything goes. practice targeted reading skills. The reading partner can be a parent, peer, mentor or therapist. The mentor is also supported through video demonstrations of every part of this reading tool.
The Virtual Reading Gym was developed for the delayed reader of any age, who can cope with a basic grade 2 text. Readers are not born with ready-made reading circuitry in the brain – this needs to be developed through a great deal of practice, and encouragement. For many this process is painless, but for others, it is fraught with struggles. Delayed reading can result in a wobbly academic self-esteem and a lack of confidence around learning. The VRG treats errors as treasures, because the programme is tailored to the area of need, and the reader gets rewarded for choosing to work on their errors. Readers work with a more experienced reader/mentor who is able to create a supportive environment to
“VRG’s major aim is to develop academic selfesteem. The developers of VRG understand that diversity is reality. One size does not fit all. Each reader starts at their own level and works on their own targets and at their own pace. Reading improvement is not a race. To ‘wire-up’ a reading brain it takes practice and patience. VRG is dedicated to the thousands of delayed readers who helped to conceptualise this intervention. We encourage delayed readers to improve their reading skills,” says Elizabeth NadlerNir, inventor of VRG. Ice 10 cupcakes with the green buttercream then decorate nine of these with Smarties, keeping one green cupcake aside. • Mix a little cocoa powder into the remaining buttercream then ice the remaining two cupcakes before decorating with brown Smarties. • For the star on top; you can either ice a star-shape onto your remaining green cupcake, or top with a star-shaped cookie as we have. Top this with a little green icing and one pretty red Smartie. • Arrange the cupcakes into a tree shape then finish with the two brown cupcakes and you’re done! Source: www.kidspot.com.au. 72

SUNCOAST
• Mum’s Mail used to be my go to resource when my kids were little. I used to find valuable information on party planning; hints and tips for raising kids etc. Now that they are older, I still love the mag because I can focus more on the health related and business related issues intended for adults. Well done to the team on keeping us informed always. Looking forward to the next issue! Kreeshni Moodley. • Thanks for a great mag, I get it every month and it’s great to read. Hope you had a lovely High Tea, you guys deserve it. God Bless. Vera Elbourne. • I have to commend the Mum’s Mail team for their lovely magazine. It’s always a pleasure finding a copy in my son’s school bag and I enjoy reading it from cover to cover. The articles are informative and the diary dates section is very helpful. Keep up the good work! Haseenah Abubakar.

• When I popped on to your website I was very surprised to see how much more is on offer besides your already very informative booklet. I love the restaurant reviews that have been done and I look forward to the next “where-to-eat” snippet. So looking forward to my edition of Mum’s Mail, my absolute GO TO TOOLBOX as a mom.
