Editor’s Life
Happy New Year! Even though we are now in February...
I’d like to wish all the best for 2019 to all our loyal readers, supporters and especially our advertisers! I hope this year is amazing for you and your families. February is the month of luuurve for some – do you celebrate Valentine’s Day? We don’t really make a big deal of it in our home although I do love the idea of Valentine’s Day and the romance that comes with it – I’m a real softie for things like that. Valentine’s Day for me brings back many memories from school where we would buy huge cards for our secret Valentine’s and fill them with all sorts of poems, rhymes, silly messages, drawings and LOTS of kisses and love hearts! If they were lucky, they might have even received an individual chocolate in a box! I had one friend whose mum used to buy her all sorts of choccies and cute things for Valentine’s Day and would spoil her rotten – although she was a very kind friend and would share them with me when I visited. Of
course, I loved going to her house….! As the Mum’s Mail team looks towards what 2019 brings, I’m delighted to announce that we have set dates for our two huge and super successful fundraising events this year. Both are in association with The Sunflower Fund again, starting with the 6th PMB Ladies Breakfast which will take place on Friday 12th April 2019 at the Victoria Country Club. The 14th Annual Mum’s Mail High Tea will take place on Friday 6th September 2019 and more details will follow - so save these dates and watch this space for more info coming soon. You can also keep up to date by visiting our Facebook page @Mum’s Mail High Tea or by signing up to our weekly e-newsletter. Have a luurvely February. Victoria xxx

Meet the Cover Stars
She loves dancing and dislikes being reprimanded (LOL)!
Our stunning cover stars this month are the Ferreira family, originally from Glenashley, but recently relocated to Pretoria. Desere and John Ferreira are pictured with their children Ignus, Hechter, Hardus and Rene.
“Friday nights are movie or board games night. We used to go to the beach a lot, but now we ride our bicycles and dream about our next vacation,” says Desere. “Sunday is church and family day - we only socialise with friends on Saturdays.”
Desere is a General and Aesthetic Practitioner On being a mom to four kids working in Umhlanga and a busy career woman, and Pretoria (Irene Desere had this to say: “It’s all Intercare). She has a about your support system. passion for women’s Having good friends that help health, depression with lifts, wonderful helpers at and ADHD. John is a mechanical engineer and MD of a national home and an amazing team at work makes all the difference! I do not attempt to do HVAC consultancy firm. everything myself.” They moved from Glenashley to Irene in Pretoria in January this year. Desere flies “My husband guides me a lot with the down to her Umhlanga practice every two business aspects - a medical degree doesn’t weeks and the practice runs independently prepare you for managing your own business!” as she manages it from Pretoria. Ignus (13) is in grade 8 and is a confident allrounder - he participates in any sport and cultural event available. He was Dux of his school in 2018 and plays piano and guitar. He loves adult conversation and dislikes pompous people! Hechter is 11 and in grade 6. He is reserved and plays piano and chess – he loves choir and he is a mathematician. He loves PlayStation and dislikes tuna mayo! Hardus (7) is in grade 2 and is the selfappointed “head boy” – he’s also an all-rounder and achieves well in sports, academics and cultural activities. According to his mom, he hates going to bed, like most kids his age, and loves his little sister to bits. The youngest and only daughter is six-yearold Rene, who is in Grade R. She is super confident, a drama queen and very lovable. www.mumsmail.com

“Keeping the balance between work, family and socialising is the biggest challenge and you have to make a permanent, conscious effort to achieve and maintain it,” says Desere. Desere’s advice to new parents: “Enjoy every stage of your child’s life and try not to look at your phone between 5 and 7pm! We only have 18 summers with our children in the house - I only have five summers left with my eldest… Try to spend 10 minutes of special time with each child every day and acknowledge their emotions without judging them. I find the personality profile book “Growing Kids with Character” by Hettie Brittz very helpful! It should be on every parent’s book shelf,” concludes Desere. Written by Sarah Mackintosh

Mum’s Guilt Psychologist Paul Bushell interviews mum of three and radio personality, Jane LinleyThomas about ‘mum guilt’. Guilt is a very powerful emotion. It is powerful not only because it can feel so uncomfortable and overwhelming, but also because it can maintain some harsh thoughts and drive some destructive behaviour. When we are feeling guilt, we often connect with harsh and critical thoughts about ourselves – many of which are not even true. But worse, guilt often leads to a parenting style which is inconsistent and sometimes spoiling. Jane, what has been your experience of mum’s guilt? Mother’s guilt used to be my automatic default setting. As a working mom of three kids under the age of two at one stage, I was always feeling guilty about everything - working too much, not being enough for everyone and feeling all round overwhelmed. And in turn - sleep deprived, feeling out of shape, and generally unpleasant. www.mumsmail.com
What were some of the consequences of this guilt in your children’s lives? Guilt is a toxic and useless emotion; it robs you of time and energy. I learnt that carving out moments (no matter how small), just to be close and connected to each child, really helped. As a working mum, how do you stop it from creeping in (especially after a long and busy day)? When I am tired and strung-out, the guilt knows it can push me around. I think that stepping out of the feeling and confronting it can really go a long way. Sometimes you need someone’s help to do that. I think guilt, like regret, is a normal emotion which all of us experience. It’s important that we acknowledge these emotions, and then find ways to process and deal with them. Love to Stop a Bully There’s a conversation around bullying that no one seems to be having. The question that is always asked by teachers or parents is “Are you being bullied?”, “Who is bullying you?” or “How can we help you not get bullied?” Yet the question that doesn’t often get asked is - “Are you the bully?”
Yet this doesn’t seem to be a conversation that is being had. The other thing I found out almost immediately by having a conversation with the parents, is that they were not very good when it came to the listening and engaging and that they were more comfortable imposing their opinions, feelings and conversation onto anyone that would listen. It reinforced my belief that bullying tendencies is a learned behaviour. Most of the time it’s said that the parents need to fix any form of bullying behaviour, but how are the bullies going to fix the bullying when the bullies don’t even know that they’re the bully or that their child has learnt to bully from them??
I had an incident recently where I witnessed a child displaying bullying tendencies at a gathering, so I waited for the opportunity where I could approach the parents and then very gently and conversationally glean Ultimately it looks like the responsibility falls their understanding of bullying. on those that are outside and empathetically The tricky part here is, from my limited become aware of the problem. I think the psychological understanding, is if a child is best course of action is, from one parent a bully, the last thing you would want to do to another, if you do encounter a bully, or is marginalise the child or pick them out if your child is being bullied, find said bully of a crowd, because sometimes the root and find out where they need a little bit of cause of their bullying tendencies is caused love, positive attention or some mild passby the fact that the child is already feeling you-in-the-hallways passive nurturing. left out and their acting out is them trying to insinuate themselves into conversations I feel that should be the solution. I don’t and social circles the only way they know. have the answers right now. This is just me They don’t always have the skill set or thinking out loud. Which is what you do as personality type to charm or politely make a parent, you learn new things on the fly all the time. themselves available. By Darren Maule.
This is what I understand: a bully is a person who is compromised socially, and so to compromise them even further socially doesn’t help the bully or the people around them. The difficulty here is that the approach to a bully is to do something counter intuitive; give the bully some love – a little positive attention and care. More so than the other child who’s been the target of the bullying. I think we’re so conditioned to molly coddle the victim that we do little to nothing to address the root cause of the problem and that requires giving time to the bully to help them assimilate and socialise and ultimately not bully any more. www.mumsmail.com

Clueless: The Murder Mystery Game Where No-one Has a Clue! The Mum’s Mail team experienced a Clueless murder mystery evening at the end of last year, and it was bucket loads of fun! We arranged to have ours at a restaurant with a private dining area – and a delicious meal was included. It was the perfect time for us to let our hair down and laugh the night away. How it works You choose your theme for the evening – there are seven to choose from – and each theme has its own back story, characters and script, all with a uniquely South African flavour. All themes and scripts are written by award-winning local journalist Trish Beaver who uses her comic humour and knowledge of typical South African scenarios to make the game unusual and unforgettable.
revealing their character for the night and encouraging them to dress and act the part on the night. On the night, the murder mystery is facilitated by a host who leads you through the game. This is not a passive dinner entertainment everyone is involved in the unfolding plot. Get ready for lots of laughs as you follow the script throughout the evening. At the end of the night, everyone gets to guess who the murderer is, and if you get it right you win a prize! This is sheer fun and escapism - its entertainment to die for! Bwahahahahaaa…. These dinners are great as a team building exercise, office party, fundraiser or simply a fun evening with friends.

Quick Sweet Potato and Cheese Quesadillas
Make one quesadilla at a time, starting with the kiddo’s so that it has a chance to cool before everyone sits down to eat. Or use the oven directions and do them all at once.
Ingredients • 8 small corn, flour, or whole grain tortillas/wraps • 4 tablespoons cream cheese • 1-2 small roasted sweet potatoes • 1 cup shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese • Salsa for serving (optional) To make this on the stove top (this is the best method for corn tortillas) Warm a cast iron skillet over medium heat. Pour in a little neutral oil or butter if the pan is dry, then wipe with a paper towel to cover the bottom of the pan. (You just need
a thin layer of oil.) Spread some cream cheese onto the tortilla, then the sweet potato, and place into skillet. Add about 1/4 cup cheese and place the second tortilla on top. Press down. Cover and let warm for about 2 minutes. Flip and warm for 2-3 minutes more or until cheese is melted. Remove from skillet and let rest on a plate for at least a minute before cutting into wedges. Serve with salsa if your kiddo likes it. To make this in the oven: Place the assembled tortillas into the oven on a foil-lined baking tray, place a sheet of foil on top, and weight with a baking sheet and a cast iron skillet or a pie plate. Bake for 5 to 8 minutes or until warmed through and cheese is melted. Source: www.yummytoddlerfood.com

Vuma Fibre: Best for Everyone and Everything Access to high-speed fibre broadband has become more available to residents in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and KwaZuluNatal, improving the way many people use the internet. Vuma Fibre launches you into the Information Age and puts a world of knowledge and entertainment at your fingertips. Access to super-fast fibre broadband connects homes to internet speeds that are 250 times faster than the average broadband speed used in South Africa. Simply put - it is the fastest. Fibre gives you a buffer-free online experience with less downtime. This highspeed connection supports a host of new services such as VoIP, which enables you to make calls over the internet, and the use of home monitoring and CCTV security systems. The introduction of fibre into your home gives you the opportunity to keep your existing telephone number while getting rid of your home line; saving you money by cutting your phone bills. As every home’s internet needs differ, so do the line speeds and packages on the Vuma network. Whether you are a student studying online or running a business from home, there is an internet package suitable for your internet demands. With so much choice, you are bound to find the perfect internet fit for your home.
are looking to launch your home into the future with tech-savvy smart devices that remind you to top up your milk and security systems that enable you to always stay in touch with those at home, then a line speeds from 200Mbps to 1Gbps would be the best fit for you. Installing fibre into your home will improve everyone’s online experience and enable you to download the latest movies, games, and music, stream live HDTV, work hasslefree from home with uninterrupted video conferencing as well as increase home security. The installation of fibre to your property also increases its commercial value and makes it more attractive to prospective tenants. With that being said, you could be connected to uncapped high-speed fibre broadband from as little as R443* on a month-to-month plan, giving you the flexibility of upgrading your line speed as your internet needs change.
If you enjoy online shopping, ordering your favourite UberEats meal from the comfort of your home or Skyping your loved ones abroad, then a line speed of 20Mbps would be the best fit for you. Should you be a family that enjoys streaming HD movies across multiple smart devices, with children focused on doing research and completing homework, then a line speed of 50Mbps would be most suitable for keeping your household happy. For all online gamers out there looking to play in real-time on a low latency connection, then a line speed of 100Mbps would be most ideal. If you www.mumsmail.com

Pregnancy Awareness Week
Pregnancy Awareness Week is from 12 to 16 February. The Department of Health uses Pregnancy Awareness Week to strengthen pregnancy education and stress important issues that promote healthy pregnancy and safe motherhood. The government suggests that pregnant women should start receiving antenatal care as soon as they confirm they are pregnant – within the first trimester. The reason antenatal care is important is because it provides the following benefits: • The opportunity to treat existing medical conditions that can be aggravated by pregnancy like diabetes, hypertension, anaemia and infections. • Free testing and voluntary counselling for HIV. • Early recognition of danger signs in pregnancy and post-delivery. • Preparation for birth and readiness for complications. • Self-care which includes nutrition and high standard of hygiene. • Information on the father’s
role and the family’s as well. Pregnancy Awareness Week also gives importance to the rights of pregnant women which include the following: • The right of a woman to choose her companion for providing support during pregnancy and childbirth. The companion will also accompany her to the antenatal care clinic as well as during labour. • The right of the woman to be treated with respect, dignity and confidentiality. • The right of the woman to ask questions and to get the right explanation regarding her condition. The main goal of the event is to spread important information regarding pregnancy including tips on how to have a healthy pregnancy, how to prevent complications and more. Anyone can help raise awareness – even a simple post or tweet on social media can help. Source: www.gov.za.
What is Epilepsy?
Epilepsy affects 1 in 100 people in South Africa. There are 50 million people living with epilepsy globally. Every year, on the second Monday of February, people join together to highlight the problems faced by people with epilepsy, their families and carers. Epilepsy is a tendency to have recurrent seizures (convulsions) which occur when there is an abnormal electrical discharge in the brain. Seizures may be triggered by a chemical imbalance or structural abnormality.
The term “epilepsy” covers a variety of seizure types which may differ in cause, nature, severity, management and longterm outcome. People (especially parents) commonly take a very pessimistic view about epilepsy, causing unnecessary anxiety. To avoid this you should talk to your child’s doctor to identify the specific diagnosis (type of epilepsy) accurately to ensure the most appropriate treatment, advice and help. www.mumsmail.com
Epilepsy facts Generalisations about epilepsy have been the source of confusion in the past, often leading to myths and misconceptions. • The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that 1 in every 100 persons in developing countries (like South Africa) has epilepsy • An isolated seizure is not necessarily an indication of epilepsy • Anybody can be diagnosed with epilepsy at any age but most commonly develops before the age of 20 • Most people will be able to control their epilepsy with medication • Children with epilepsy may outgrow the condition • Epilepsy is not a psychiatric illness or condition, but a neurological condition • Epilepsy is not infectious or contagious. Epilepsy South Africa promotes human rights and an inclusive society for persons with disabilities, primarily persons with epilepsy. Life after Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in South African men. One in seven men will be diagnosed with this disease. When it is detected early, the survival rates are high. However, the complication from the treatment can be extremely disabling for men and can significantly affect their quality of life. Treatment for Prostate Cancer may include watchful waiting, surgery to remove the prostate (radical prostatectomy) or radiation to the prostate. With a more progressed cancer chemotherapy and hormone therapy may be included. These treatments affect the pelvic floor muscles. Compromised pelvic floor function can lead to pain, urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. A physiotherapist who has done further training in men’s pelvic health can help to manage these complications. After a radical prostatectomy, 98 to 100% of men will experience incontinence and impotence. While most men will regain bladder control, only 30% will recover from erectile dysfunction. The pelvic
floor muscles play an important role in sexual activity and pelvic physiotherapy rehabilitation has proven successful in treating sexual dysfunction. How can Physiotherapy Help? Pelvic floor exercises are not as easy as one would think. Diagnostic ultrasound is a useful, non-invasive tool to assess the pelvic floor muscle function in men. This enables the physiotherapist to teach the correct way to exercise the pelvic floor. A men’s pelvic health physiotherapist will do an in-depth evaluation with every patient to create an individualised management plan. Pelvic rehabilitation is cost-effective, noninvasive and straight forward. Remember not all physiotherapists have training in men’s pelvic health, make sure your physiotherapist has the correct training and equipment. Opinion Piece: Medication is Designed to Keep you Taking Medication Geoff Hindmarch is a traditional healing doctor, author and CEO of HealingWithCannabis.co.za, and is passionate about healing and helping others. Geoff shares his views on medication vs medical cannabis. Your body has a CANNABINOIDAL system which learns as you experience. Let’s say you get your first headache at three years old and your mom gives you an Aspirin. Your body has just learnt that Aspirins cure headaches. If the next time you have a headache your mom gives you a different painkiller, your body will make the pain worse because it wants an Aspirin. By the time you reach middle age half of your body is under the control of medicine and your body starts to slow down. It gives you pain and insomnia. Your body is trying to tell you something is wrong… Listening to your body Your body reacts to what you think and www.mumsmail.com
believe, plus what people tell you. So if a doctor tells you that you have a dreaded disease and will die in six months, your body will produce endorphins that will close down all your organs. On the other hand when people say; “I will beat this disease” their body produces endorphins that go around defending the body. I have had a few people who have taken medical cannabis but as they were scared of it, the body would not accept the cannabis as the body thought it was protecting itself. To change this mindset, all it took was for someone to say to them; “You are looking better today – the cannabis must be working,” and their bodies suddenly accepted and a fast change was experienced. Dr Des@Home: Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Month
With the New Year comes New Year’s resolutions. We all have been there and done that, but not all of us fit the healthy t-shirt! Eat Healthily on a Budget If you believe that eating healthily is expensive, then you are not alone. This belief is widespread, but contrary to popular belief, eating healthy is a lot cheaper than you think, says Renny Letswalo, Health Coach and Managing Director of Cambridge Weight Plan Southern Africa. “It is possible to cook healthier foods at a lower cost, but this does require planning and preparation,” says Letswalo. Start cooking One of the keys to eating healthily on a budget is to get cooking. Preparing your own meals is associated with higher diet quality and lower spending on food. Make time to plan your meals and make a list before going grocery shopping. Buy foods that are in season Fruits and vegetables that are in season are usually at their tastiest, most nutritious and cheapest. Locally sourced produce will also cost you less, and so will buying from your local markets. www.mumsmail.com
Buy whole ingredients Instead of buying chicken wings or breasts separately, rather buy the whole chicken from which you can make several meals. Plant your own vegetables, herbs and fruit in your backyard Vegetable and fruit planting doesn’t have to be as difficult as it seems. A small patch of land can produce all the greens you need to eat a nutritious meal. Frozen is just as good Most people believe that frozen produce doesn’t contain as many nutrients as fresh, but that’s not true. Frozen food is more economical as you store what you don’t use and prevent wastage. Avoid processed foods It’s healthier to avoid packaged or canned foods. If you do, rather choose those with less ingredients so you are clearer on what you are eating. Visit www.cambridgeweightplan.co.za for more information.

Mooimaak Makeovers: Charmaine Venter
In 1992 ex-police detective Charmaine Venter (van Wyk) became a widow and single parent to three children. The idea of ever getting to put herself first became an impossible dream.
Happily, Charmaine would later remarry but those harder years took a toll on her appearance. Fortunately, this is nothing the Skin Renewal team of kykNET’s Mooimaak couldn’t fix. Firm and fabulous Charmaine’s lax-looking skin was addressed using a series of Exilis Radiofrequency treatments. This heats up the deeper layers of your skin in a way that causes your existing collagen to contract while stimulating your fibroblasts to make more of it. The result is an instantly tightened effect that improves over time as your newfound collagen begins to grow. A sculpted jaw Charmaine’s once sculpted jawline was being hidden by jowls but this was an easy fix thanks to lipodissolve. The treatment
involves injecting a Ceccarelli solution made up of vitamin C and iron into the fatty areas. This causes a natural breakdown of the fat cells, making it possible to re-contour and sculpt the face. New threads PDO Anchor Threads are sutures strategically placed under the skin to create a more lifted look. They dissolve after six months, but their effect lingers for up to a year as they also encourage the creation of new collagen. These enhanced Charmaine’s cheek bones while lifting her jowls and the end result was incredible. ‘Now, people stop me in the street and say “Wow! What happened? You look ten years younger!”, says a delighted Charmaine. ‘I don’t look fake, I look refreshed and I love it!’ To find out more visit Skin Renewal at www.skinrenewal.co.za or contact one of the branches in Durban on 0861 SKIN SA.
You Should be Toning: Here’s Why
If your skin care routine consists of only cleansing and moisturising, adding a toner into the mix can be a real difference maker in the health and happiness of your skin. Toning slips in right after cleansing, taking care of any makeup you might have missed and removing any cleanser build-up left on your skin.
Your skin thrives when its pH balance is kept within a tight range. Skin prefers a slightly acidic balance of around 5-6 (on a scale of 0-14). Cleansing, although fantastic for your skin, tips its pH balance towards a more alkaline nature. Toning combats this loss of balance bringing your skin back into the sweet spot. Toning gets to work unclogging the skin’s pores from the oil, dirt and grime that build-up throughout the day. Toning tightens up the cell gaps of your skin, shrinking down pore size and leaving you less vulnerable to the irritants www.mumsmail.com
and pollutants that bombard us while out conquering the world. Not all Toners are Created Equal Make sure your new toner is free from synthetics, doesn’t contain any alcohol, preservatives or artificial colouring. These ingredients can have adverse effects, leaving you with chronically sensitive skin. How to Apply Your Toner After cleansing your face, spray your toner onto a cotton wool pad and wipe across your face and neck, paying particular attention to your forehead, nose and chin. Then spritz onto the skin to get maximum benefit from all those skin loving ingredients. Here’s the kicker…whilst your skin is still slightly damp from the toner, apply your follow-on products like your serum and moisturiser. Application to damp skin massively improves product penetration and of course, efficacy. Source: www.hey-gorgeous.co.za.

Treating Kids’ Dry Skin Dry skin (xerosis cutis) can be a big problem for many infants and older children. In addition to those children with eczema, whose dry skin gets red and itchy, some simply get dry arms, legs, hands, or a dry area around their mouth from time to time. Their skin may peel, feel itchy, and may be red and rough when it gets dry.
Reapply moisturisers at least two or three times a day. Have kids shower after swimming and then quickly apply a moisturiser to their skin. Frequently apply a moisturising lip balm on and around your child’s lips, which are prone to get dry in the winter.

How to Talk with your Kids about Grades Whether your kids tend to earn As, Bs, Cs, or Fs, kids often define “who they are” based on the grades they receive. “I’m an A-student.” “I’m not very smart.” “I’m an average student.”
Do you see how this approach tackles the low grade as a problem to be solved? This enables the child to focus on improving the grade versus feeling bad about himself for making a poor grade.
This approach works great for homework as well. Decide with your child what grade represents solid knowledge of the material – is it 80%, 85%, 90%, 95%? Once you come to an agreement, let the child know that any paper that receives a grade below the threshold will need to be reworked to ensure that he understands the material well enough to move forward in class. Tips for Tantrums Younger children may have tantrums because they are still learning to regulate their emotions. This is a gradual process which requires ongoing practice, with your guidance. Tips to Prevent Tantrums • Ensure your children are well fed and well rested, especially before going out. • Encourage lots of physical activity as this helps them to burn off energy and stress. • Be proactive by identifying situations which may cause tantrums, such as preparing your child for change in advance if they experience difficulty with transitions. • Record tantrums to show them at a later stage as this may help them to realise that their behaviour is unacceptable and prevent them from repeating it. • It is very important to recognise children’s successes and to reinforce positive behaviours.
Tips for Tantrums • Set clear ground rules with regard to appropriate and inappropriate behaviour, making sure that your child has a good understanding of these. • If your child does have a tantrum try to be patient, as it is important to manage your own feelings of anger and frustration. • Acknowledge and validate their feelings, for example “I know that you are feeling angry because…” and then calmly remind them of the rules to make them aware that that their behaviour is unacceptable. This may help them to compose themselves. • Follow this by encouraging acceptable behaviour such as giving them instructions to apologise or make a more appropriate choice. • If they do not respond to this then calmly state the consequences. • If the tantrum still persists then ensure that you follow through with the consequences. Consistency is important! • Once children learn that there are consequences for their inappropriate behaviour, they will be less likely to repeat it. • Remember, what works for one child may not work for another. If your child does not manage to compose themselves then another method may be necessary. • It may help to distract them or give them a “time out” until they are able to calm down and put their feelings into words. • If your child continues to throw tantrums it might be useful to talk to their teacher, doctor, a counsellor or a psychologist. It is important for parents and caregivers to remember that they are in charge! Children who know and understand their boundaries are less likely to throw tantrums because they are aware of what is expected of them. Lunch boxes provide children with at least a third of their daily intake of energy for the day as well as providing them with the energy required for school activities in the classroom and on the sports field. Science Experiments: Grow Giant Worms Naked Eggs
Science question: Is it easier for your body to absorb plain or salt water? Most of the water on our planet is salt water, yet we don’t drink it. Let’s use gummy worms to show how different types of water are absorbed by our body.
Science question: How do you make an eggshell disappear? Eggshells are made of calcium carbonate. We can dissolve that shell, making the egg naked so we can see and touch the parts of a cell.
Supplies needed: • Ruler • 6 gummy worms • Paper and pencil • 2 glass bowls • 2/3 cup (160ml) warm water • ¼ teaspoon salt • Spoon
Supplies needed: • Raw egg • Glass container • Vinegar
The experiment: With the ruler, measure the length of the gummy worms. Write this on a piece of paper. In a bowl, combine 1/3 cup (80ml) of the water and salt, and mix together with a spoon. Add the remaining 1/3 cup of water to the other bowl. Write which bowl is which on a piece of paper and place under the bowl. Put three gummy worms in each bowl. Let the worms sit in the bowls for a couple of hours. Pull out the worms and measure them again. Are your worms bigger? The Outcome: The gummy worms in both bowls absorbed water. However, the worms in the plain water absorbed more water and grew much larger than the worms in the salt water.
The Experiment: Place the egg in the container and cover it with vinegar. Watch the egg for about 15 minutes – you should see bubbles form on the surface of the egg. Check the egg again after 8 hours and again after 3 days. The outcome: The eggshell will thin after about eight hours and then completely disappear after 3 days. You can then see and touch the membrane covering the egg. Why it worked: The shell of an egg is made of calcium carbonate, which is a base. When vinegar an acid - covers the shell it breaks down the calcium, releasing carbon dioxide (gas). You see this in the bubbles.
Variation: If water hydrates, what does sugar do? Have two separate cups, one with water and one with corn syrup (the main ingredient in many sodas). Put an egg into each cup. After Why it worked: a couple of hours in the jars you can see When gummy worms are added to water, how osmosis caused the egg in the water to the water molecules move through the tiny get even bigger and how the sugars in the holes in the surface of the candy. The gelatin corn syrup dehydrated (pulled water out of) keeps the gummy worms from dissolving. the other egg. Critical thinking: Plain water is easier for our bodies to absorb. That’s why we don’t drink salt water. Source: The 101 Coolest Simple Science Experiments by Rachel Miller, Holly Homer & Jamie Harrington. www.mumsmail.com

Birthday Party Prep We’ve just celebrated my son’s 5th birthday with a fun birthday party this past weekend. During the party prep stages, I found this article on www.babycentre.co.uk which I found really helpful! Have a read below - I hope you find it useful too!
• Resist inviting the whole preschool class. It’s chaotic, and your child will drown in toys they don’t need. Better to ask which friends they really want; some parents limit guests to one per year of age. Kids typically have more fun in smaller groups.
Involving your child in their birthday plans is a great way to make them feel responsible and respected. Some suggestions for making both of you happy:
• Time it right. One to two hours is the perfect length: enough time for cake, a few games, and some unstructured running around.
• You decide the big issues, like where. Don’t feel you have to indulge their every whim. A party at your home can be much cheaper than going elsewhere - and just as much fun.
• Remember, they’re little kids! Gourmet foods is pointless. They want birthday cake, party snacks, playtime with friends, and maybe a small treat when they go home. Forget the elaborate gift bags - who needs to get into a competition over this stuff? • Let your child pick the theme. This doesn’t Keep it simple and inexpensive: candy, mean that everything from decor to games sidewalk chalk, balls, or balloons suffice. needs to reflect Superman or fairy motifs. Easy Love Treats and Crafts
Here are some easy Valentine’s treats and crafts to make this February – whether you are making for a party, your class, a special treat for your mom and dad, or a special someone. I Love You This Much Card Trace your child’s hand, then cut out two copies. My paper was double sided so I made sure that when the thumbs match up – the yellow side would be inside, and the blue side would be outside. Cut out a strip of paper and fold it accordion style. Use letter rub-ons or stickers to add the words “I Love You” on the outside, and “This Much” on the strip of paper. Glue the ends of your accordion strip on the insides of the hands and your card is done. Sweetie Pie for your darling • 10 Sweetie Pies • Small piece of milk chocolate • Sugar roses and leaves • Sugar hearts, various sizes • Edible glitter (optional)
Source: www.tiffkeetch.blogspot.com.
Melt the chocolate in the microwave, stirring often. Use melted chocolate to stick sugar roses and hearts to the Sweetie Pies. Leave them to stand while the chocolate sets and then sprinkle over some edible glitter. A decorated Sweetie Pie in a lovely container makes a lovely gift for your darling! Tip: If you can’t get Sweetie Pies, use a chocolate-coated biscuit or small chocolate cupcake or muffin.
Valentine’s Day Fingerprint Frame • Acrylic paints (various shades of red, white and pink) • Unfinished wooden frame Chocolate Strawberries • Your finger Melt milk chocolate in the microwave, • Mod Podge to seal stirring often. Dip whole strawberries in melted chocolate, and lay on some wax All you do to create this fun work of art is paper until the chocolate hardens. You dip your finger in each colour of paint and could add red/pink/white sprinkles if dot it onto the frame. When all the wood is desired. Refrigerate and serve as a delicious covered, let it dry. Then add a coat of Mod treat! Podge to seal it. All that’s left is to add a photo of yourself or child! Source: Easy Party Treats for Children by Janette Mocke. Source: www.amylattacreations.com. Party Fun
Use these fun ideas to keep little hands and minds busy at your next kid’s birthday party! Pipe Cleaner Disguises
Bouncing Balloons
Materials needed: Lots of different colours and sizes of pipe cleaners and glue dots or double-sided tape. Create a unique pipe cleaner disguise for yourself. We have some suggestions…
While you can’t do all the traditional yo-yo tricks with this homemade version, it’s a fun way to practice eye-hand coordination and is much easier to control.
Spy glasses: Take a pipe cleaner and make it into a spiral like a shell – you will need two. When finished, push the centre of the spirals out to create a sort of cone. Attach the “cones” to the centre of eyeglasses formed from pipe cleaners.
Materials: • Colourful balloons, play dough, sand or flour • Scissors • Large rubber band (or multiple bands if small) • Masking tape
Get your bug on! Create antennae and pretend to be an insect… or an alien. Use a couple of pipe cleaners to create a headband. Add antennae. Consider making the antennae from spirals or curling the ends of them. Other pipe cleaner accessories you can make: Swords, mustaches, bushy eyebrows, hats, cat whiskers, flowers – the options are endless!
Fill the balloon with the play dough (or flour or sand). Then, tie the balloon shut. Cut some small holes into a second balloon. Carefully stretch the second balloon over the playdough-filled balloon, allowing the colour of the lower balloon to peek through the top layer holes. Tie the rubber band around the knot in the balloon. If your rubber band is not long enough, make a “string” of bands by tying them to each Tips: Are you worried about the ends of the other. pipe cleaners poking you child? Just fold the sharp end in and twist it inside itself. Your Modifications for younger kids: Skip the pipe cleaner should now be blunted and rubber bands and let the kids squish the safer for small tots to enjoy. filled yo-yo ball. This is also a great activity for kids to do on a long car trip. Tip: Play dough, sand or flour in a balloon mimics the adult “stress ball” and can be a source of calming sensation to kids.

Party Favours that Will Last
Little Tikes Toy Range Encourages Play and Movement Little Tikes is a range of toys for indoor and outdoor play that will entertain your child while helping them to develop their mind and imagination. The toys encourage discovery and learning through active, creative and social play and provide hours of fun. The products are created for babies and toddlers, as well as older children, with a focus on interaction, movement and learning. From outdoor sets to role-playing toys, the products encourage children to play, push, pull, bounce and more. The toys have been designed especially for little hands and are tough enough to endure being chewed, hit and thrown about.
This is a great idea for birthday party favours for kids – instead of a bag of sugary sweets or something that will end up on the bin. It’s also a great idea to keep little ones entertained at weddings, especially during the ‘boring’ parts… so make these darling colouring clipboard favours for each sweet little child attending your wedding or event.
“Toddlers and children have been enjoying Little Tikes toys for many years. The range includes musical instruments, pull along toys, stacking toys, bath toys and more. They’re fun, engaging and for the parent’s peace of mind, tough!” says Chiquita Patrizi of Prima Toys.
Supplies: • Home Printer • 6″ x 9″ Memo-Sized Clipboards • White Cardstock • Crayons or Colored Pencils The products are available at toy stores • Twine or Ribbon countrywide. You can find free colouring in images online to download – print some on regular paper to the correct size and cut them and stick them onto the cardstock. Put the cards/ pictures onto the clipboard. Cut a long piece of twine and wrap tightly around the crayons first… then wrap and tie around the clipboard itself. At this point you could also add a little tag with each child’s name to personalise. For more information visit www.primatoys.co.za. WIN! WIN! WIN!
