You may already have noticed that our cover page has changed quite radically, as have the heading colours/strips for each section. A fresh look is never a bad thing, but we would also like to hear from you, our readers – what would you like to see more of in the mag? Perhaps you’d like us to feature stories about real people in your community who are making a difference? If so, we need you to tell us who deserves to be recognised for what they are doing.

For many, their pets are their family. “My father is a man that does not shed tears easily. This, however, was not the case when a beloved best friend had to be put down. He wept uncontrollably,” said Dallas Gilbert of Oakleigh Funeral Home.

“Personally, the experience of dire grief came home when, without thinking, I told my local vet that he could dispose of the remains of my four-legged friend who did not make it after being mauled by another dog. The denial and sadness persisted for months, as I regretted not affording myself an opportunity for closure. My challenge to you is that you include what should happen to your four-legged and feathered family when drawing up your will and planning for the future.”

The Importance of Budgeting When running a business it’s important to know where you’re going (strategy) and to measure the success against a budget. Budgeting allows a company to plan for things, e.g. the purchase of new machinery or the ability to hire more staff.
Book your April Easter Issue Advert by 10 March Call us NOW! 031 573 1731
A starting point is using the business’s performance in the current financial year. This is sometimes referred to as a “Top Down” budget as management takes last year, adds a percentage and requests that staff achieve it. Another method is the “Bottom Up” budget whereby everything is looked at a-fresh each year. Staff give input on what’s achievable and feel part of the process. Management typically add a bit of stretch in the budget and sign off with incentives usually tied to achieving it. A budget is used to plan, as mentioned above, but targets for staff can exceed what’s in the budget, i.e. targets and budgets could and should be different. It’s great to put a budget in place to act as an early warning system. It’s not good enough though to just know there is a difference, one needs to act on it. If it doesn’t look like targets will be met, one might decide to lease rather than buy new machinery. Do you know the difference between targets and budgets? Do your employees? They provide the most elusive of products in the world... time! Services offered: • Collection and delivery of documents and packages; same day service within Durban. • Weekly post box collections. • Assistance with function planning, sourcing of quotes etc. • Standing in queues on your behalf; bank, post office, government departments. • Banking. • General office shopping. • Sourcing of suppliers for various services. • Arranging and researching travel plans. • Party and event planning and research. • Booking of restaurants, conference venues etc. • Meeting contractors and suppliers at your home on your behalf. • Personal shopping, returns, alterations, laundry collection etc. • Gift shopping, wrapping and delivery. • Vehicle services, car licence renewals, etc. • Collection of official documents (visas, passports, etc.) Their business clients have shown that having a concierge available to staff reduces absenteeism, increases focus in the office and increases job satisfaction. Individual clients report that their time off from work is now their own to enjoy, and not spent handling little chores which would normally take up their time. I have used Bianca to buy my son’s takkies for cricket, do filing/archiving at the office, source berets for a function and collect décor in Hillary! It is such a relief to know that there is someone trustworthy and reliable who can get to the errands I simply cannot fit in during my day!

Make 2015 Your Year Okay so we are nearly 10% through our year, and we’re back on the treadmill. Our best intentions (otherwise known as New Year’s resolutions) are a thing of the past and we’re down to the serious business of making a living. We’re like the bee trying to get out the window… we can see the beauty and freedom that we want and are determined to be a part of. Armed with this resolve, we do what we know how to do best, as hard as we can, certain that this will take us to the paradise that awaits us. From time to time we are forced to catch our breath, but we return to our quest with renewed determination and vigour… until we can no longer. To get a different result you have to do things differently. Start with these few simple steps: 1. Know where your business is at. The problem with the ostrich approach is that while your head is safely buried, you know what’s exposed! 2. Get clear about what you want to achieve this year. Set SMART goals, but more importantly, make sure that; • The goal truly inspires you, that it is aligned with your highest values, that you feel called to achieve it. • The goal is real; start with something that you already have some evidence of and let it grow.
Have you not had enough of this crime? If so, why not then use your cell phone to help fight it and keep your hands clean? Your eyes and cell are your only involvement. See how many other residents in your area are already taking part. JOIN THEM! Let’s fight this crime together!
3. Work out what you need to achieve in the first quarter and then work weekly towards that. And remember, it’s not only achieving a goal that matters, but achieving a quality of life on the journey. Raising a Vegetarian Child Following a well-balanced plant-based diet is not only healthy, but evidence suggests that it may help prevent or even reverse some diseases. If your children refuse to eat meat because they struggle with texture or you are raising them as vegetarian, it is possible for them to receive all their nutrients with a well-balanced diet.
Tel: 083 381 8483 www.tashasfudge.co.za
Tips to raise your child vegetarian: Protein: The main concern with a vegetarian diet is that your child will not receive enough protein. Meat is a complete protein as it contains all eight essential proteins; plant-based proteins such as soy are able to provide the same quality of protein in your child’s diet. Iron: Leafy green vegetables are especially good sources of iron, and according to the Vegetarian Resources Group may even be better on a per calorie basis when compared to meat. If your child is vegetarian, your paediatrician may want to test for any iron deficiency but a diet filled with these nonanimal iron sources will ensure this does not happen. Omega-3: Fish is the main source of omega-3 fatty acids but there are plenty of other ways to get this essential nutrient in your child’s diet without the meat. Sources include flaxseed (put it in anything you cook or bake), beans, leafy greens, hummus and winter squash.

In 2009 Nick and Eric established The Food Market with Emma Dunk and Karen Brokensha. Together they endeavoured to find and promote the many undiscovered and home-grown producers of produce, food and drinks in KZN by hosting a monthly food market and various quarterly hospitality events. Although they have left the Hellenic Community Centre, they will continue with their outside catering and still be a preferred supplier at the Hellenic. For the time being they have stopped the Sunday lunches, but will continue them once they have found a suitable venue. The last Food Market at the Hellenic will take place on 28 March. One of the most important aspects of sewing is to keep your sewing machine clean and well oiled. Instruction booklets will always have details on maintenance and how to oil a machine.
GATE AND DOOR SERVICES We specialise in: • Automatic Gates • Automatic Garage Doors • Electric Fencing • Intercoms • Access Control • Steel Fabrication
A machine should be oiled by the operator after at least three to six hours of sewing. If you are a person who sews periodically, make it a rule that you clean and oil your sewing machine before putting it away.
Quality workmanship at affordable prices
The climate in Durban can play havoc with the metal structure and parts of a sewing machine. It is for this reason that Ed suggests that a machine should be covered with a towel or material cover when it is put away. Be sure that it is not placed in a cupboard, which is a known damp area. This also applies to not placing the machinery in the garage where the carbon emissions from exhausts have been known to cause damage.
Call Leon 073 815 2551 or gdsleon@gmail.com
A trained service technician should service sewing machines annually. This will ensure that the parts you cannot access are checked and cleaned correctly. A professional technician will strip a machine down to its chassis and clean, oil and check all working joints. The motor will be checked to ensure that the brushes and the armature are in good condition.

A Passion for Marriage and Family Westville resident, Lisa Comrie, started her career as a Pharmacist. Life, and her marriage to Duncan Comrie, led them to make a decision and sacrifice their careers to be in the full-time ministry with their church. It was here that Lisa made the decision to study Psychology. “I found I had to counsel people with very tough life situations and I was not qualified or experienced enough to deal with them,” explained Lisa. In 2010 she completed her Honours in Psychology through UNISA, followed by a year’s internship and subsequent Board exam to qualify as a registered counsellor. “I have a passion for marriage and family, both in the church and in the community. No matter a person’s cultural, socioeconomic or religious background, all couples and all families need guidance and help from time to time.

My desire is to create more awareness so that the stigma of receiving marital or family counselling is lessened. Lisa has experienced her own struggle with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and depression. “When I was first diagnosed with CFS and depression I was devastated, not only because of the personal impact, but I felt so defeated in my quest to want to help others. I thought how can I help others if I can’t help myself? In time, I realised that it was exactly what I needed in order to more effectively help others. Depression and chronic illnesses are having a huge impact on marriages and families. Having to navigate this challenge in my own life, marriage and family, has given me a perspective that no amount of studying could have given me,” concluded Lisa. Chirology Explained
High Fat, Low Carb, Low Fat, High Carb, Mediterranean Diets... Are you confused by all this advice going around? Do you need somewhere to turn where you will receive honest and reliable information?
Your uniqueness is recorded on your hands. Your brain started recording information on your hands from before you were born and this process will continue throughout your life. Chirology is the tool that enables us to decode the information your brain has recorded on your hands. The information is reflected in permanent and changing features on the hands. The permanent features include the fingerprint patterns, other palm patterns, form of the hand and shape of the nails. The permanent features reflect your enduring characteristics or personality traits, life purpose and life lessons. The changing features on your hands record a history of your life from before birth and provide an accurate picture of your current emotional and physical well-being. The changing features include all the lines and they change on a daily basis. Changes are initiated by external factors, how you perceive what happens in your environment, how you process the information and how you give expression to your experiences.
Come to SureSlim to hear about the best way for YOU to lose weight and improve your health!

By analysing the information available on the lines it is possible to reveal how you adapt to your environment, how you utilise your potential and what the state of your emotional and physical health is. In considering both the permanent and changing features it is possible to guide you towards living your purpose; being who you authentically are. The aim of a chirology report is to empower you with the messages your brain has etched on your hands, reminding you of who you authentically are, and also providing you with an inventory of the tools you were equipped with to face life’s challenges and to fully enjoy the journey called life. World Down Syndrome Awareness Day
Family Practice at The Square
World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is observed on 21 March. On this day, people with Down Syndrome and those who live and work with them throughout the world organise and participate in activities and events to raise public awareness and create a single global voice for advocating for the rights, inclusion and well-being of people with Down Syndrome. Many of these events are recorded on the official World Down Syndrome Day website. Down Syndrome is a naturally occurring chromosomal arrangement that has always been a part of the human condition, being universally present across racial, gender or socio-economic lines. Down Syndrome is estimated to be one in every 1 000 live births in developed countries and one in every 650 live births in developing countries. In South Africa it is roughly one in every 500. Down Syndrome usually causes varying degrees of intellectual and physical disability and associated medical issues. You’re Magical is a support group in Durban that’s designed to assist people with Down Syndrome; to know they are special, gifted and unique. The mission is to create and nurture a loving and inclusive community celebrating every person with a disability, including Down Syndrome. You’re Magical presently has the support of two hospitals in Durban who will allow the group usage of their premises on certain days to conduct speech and occupational therapy for children that require it, but cannot afford to. These sessions will be conducted by volunteer speech and occupational therapists. For more information on You’re Magical contact Trudy Chetty on 083 318 1276, Twitter: @youre_magical or @trudychetty. Why No Meat? In 2014 Dr Paul Palmer permanently changed his lifestyle and adopted a plantbased (vegan) way of eating, where his diet consists predominantly of fruit and starches such as rice and potatoes. Today people are faced with more illness and disease than ever before and a lot of musculoskeletal issues like osteoporosis are diet-based problems they are blind to. For example, one would assume that the two nations consuming the most dairy products would have the lowest rate of osteoporosis, because of all the calcium, right? Wrong, they actually have the HIGHEST incidence of osteoporosis (USA and Australia).

There are many facts that are unknown and Dr Paul implores all readers to at least consider themselves informed and not naïve by reading ‘The China Study’. This book by Dr T. Campbell is the most comprehensive study of nutrition ever conducted and it has startling implications for weight-loss and long-term health. Imagine if a loved one could have been saved if they just changed what they put into their mouth. These are not trivial studies, they are comprehensive, and they show that a plant-based diet is the first line of defence to help prevent disease and to reverse many diseases that are oftentimes life-threatening. Switching to a plant-based lifestyle also reduces the footprint you leave on the planet and relieves the suffering and death of over 100 billion animals per year. Dr Paul hopes to debunk the multitude of health myths and misinformation in South Africa. He believes that if you want to be healthy, “change your diet”. World Oral Health Day
World Oral Health Day
World Oral Health Day is on 20 March and dentist Dr Paul Darby-Wade gives us some insight into just how important dental health is to our overall health. Recently we have seen many changes in the way we view our health and increasingly the word ‘wellness’ crops up. This concept links a multitude of factors which benefit our general health such as stress levels, nutrition, mental well-being and lifestyle habits. Unfortunately, dental health has not been looked at seriously in the above mentioned list and we need to change this. There are many situations that we see in the mouth which can highlight an increased health risk elsewhere. Some examples of these are: Diet: consumption of highly processed food, including sugar, will often result in an increased incidence of dental decay and high levels of plaque build-up. Helpful Hints on Oral Hygiene for New Parents
Pediatricians have suggested that a baby’s decayed teeth that come with it, make first visit to the dentist should be at 12 to sure that baby is weaned off all teats by 18 24 months. months. Sippy cups are helpful by this age. In a friendly dental office, well organised for children, this should be an exciting, happy, playful visit where the child’s sensory perception of dentistry is learnt. A good first visit is critical for the way going forward. Wiping your baby’s gums and tongue with a soft towel or gauze is a good start to creating good oral hygiene habits. Tooth brushing begins from the time the first tooth appears. Make brushing fun, perhaps with a sing-a-long or colourful toothbrushes and different toothpastes. As baby gets older, allow them to watch you brush your own teeth. Always have your turn at brushing their teeth until they are seven to eight years of age.
Avoid the “sweet tooth” by restricting sugary, sticky foods and drinks. Dilute fruit juices as much as possible. In fact, allowing cut fruit to infuse in a glass of water can be a fun way for your toddler to make their own juices. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentists recommends a dental checkup every six months to catch any signs of early tooth decay, reinforcing good oral hygiene habits and nutrition and to maintain a good rapport with the dental team, should the need for more extensive treatment arise.

World Glaucoma Week
World Glaucoma Week: 9 to 15 March Glaucoma is a condition in which the nerve of the eye (optic nerve) is damaged by high pressure inside the eye. About 4% of the population has glaucoma and it is most common after the age of 40. It sometimes runs in families, so family members of patients with glaucoma should be examined. Vision lost as a result of glaucoma cannot be recovered, but early diagnosis and careful life-long treatment can prevent further vision loss. Usually no symptoms are present, so it can only be diagnosed by a full eye examination. What causes glaucoma? Fluid is continually produced inside the eye to nourish the structures within it. This fluid normally drains out of the eye at the same rate as it is produced through tiny drainage canals. This maintains a steady pressure within the eye (intraocular pressure). In patients with glaucoma, the fluid is unable to drain out through the outflow canals at the normal rate as they are partially blocked. As a result the intraocular pressure increases and with time this damages the optic nerve. This in turn leads to gradual loss of vision. How is glaucoma detected? There is no cure for glaucoma but the condition can be controlled to prevent further vision loss. The primary treatment is eye drops to reduce the intraocular pressure. This is a constant life-long treatment and the drops need to be taken regularly to be effective. If vision loss occurs despite the regular use of eye drops, laser treatment or surgery may be required. Source: Dr E.N. Anderson, Ophthalmologist, 033 – 345 4300, www.eyespecialist. co.za. www.mumsmail.com

Support the Big Blood Drive: Your Blood Could Save a Life The South African National Blood Service (SANBS), in conjunction with Sprout Consulting, will host a blood drive on Wednesday 18 March from 11am to 6pm at Harvest Church in Somerset Park. There is a national shortage of blood and the SANBS appeals to everybody older than 16 to donate! The Hello. cafe will be open for you to grab something to eat or drink while you wait! Donating a unit of this ‘precious gift of life’ can save up to three patients in dire need of blood. By becoming a regular blood donor, this ensures that the safety of blood is maintained and makes it possible for the SANBS to collect sufficient safe blood to meet the demand. More importantly, there is gratification in knowing that you help save lives.
donors are the only source of blood for those who are in dire need it. If it was not for blood donors, life-saving medical treatment for children with life threatening anaemia, trauma victims, women with pregnancy related complications, organ transplants, bone marrow transplants, complicated surgical procedures and cancer treatments would not be possible. The universal access to safe blood is the lifeline for the healthcare system of any nation. As South Africans, we can all be proud of our dedicated and selfless voluntary donors who regularly donate blood to save lives of thousands of our people every year.

At this time of the year with the heat and the sun’s harsh rays, it is so very important to protect and rehydrate the skin. The sun’s rays make us feel good, produce Vitamin D which is good for our bones and in the short term, make us look good. But our love affair isn’t a two-way street. Exposure to sun causes most of the wrinkles and age spots on our faces.

2. Exfoliate. The build-up of stratum corneum (the dead, outermost skin cell layer) can make skin appear blotchy and uneven. Also, remnants of self-tanning products can collect in typically dry areas (such as the elbows), causing the skin to lose its lustre and appear dirty. Use Sh’Zen’s Rejuvenating Body Scrub (R199) and remove dead skin cells, leaving skin looking smoother. 3. Bleach the brown spots. Skin lightener helps to lighten accumulations of unwanted colour. Retinoids for a Younger, Brighter and Healthier Skin Stimulating the natural renewal of skin cells is crucial to address anti-ageing skin concerns. Retinol, a vitamin A derivative, is probably the most researched ingredient used in skincare today. High concentrations of vitamin A are used for the treatment of acne and skin ageing, but unfortunately it can be associated with side effects such as skin sensitivity, dryness, flaking and sensitivity to sunlight. SkinMedica® has developed a Retinol Complex which helps promote exfoliation, enhancing skin tone and texture and reducing the appearance of age spots, fine lines and wrinkles. It improves the appearance of sun damaged skin and pigmentation and over time, Retinol encourages collagen production, keeping your skin firm and elastic.

Cloth Nappies in the Year 2015
Baby Bygones
People think of cloth nappies as the white towelling squares that everyone used last century. However, modern cloth nappies have come a long way since then and interest is growing in reusable modern cloth nappies.
• We sell secondhand baby items • We offer a baby equipment cleaning service • We hire out baby equipment for visitors 031 - 701 0243 • 082 455 6068 2 Paige Place, Bamboo Lane, Pinetown
Parents’ reasons for using cloth nappies include cost savings, concern about chemicals, environmental concerns, and the cuteness overload. Here are the basics of ‘cloth nappying’. Babies use six to eight nappies a day, therefor you would need about 18 to 24 nappies to cloth nappy one baby full time, washing nappies every second day. The average cost of cloth nappies is about R120 each. This means a full “stash” would cost in the region of R2 500 from birth to potty training, since the majority of nappies are ‘one size fits most’. There are cheaper and more expensive routes to go. The average child will have 6 000 nappy changes in its lifetime. With disposables that’s 6 000 nappies going to the landfill per child! Cloth nappies are biodegradable, and have resale value. Many parents prefer to avoid the chemicals and plastic that disposables are made from. Cloth nappies come in a range of fabrics, including natural fibre such as bamboo, cotton, and hemp; to waterproof nappies with special coatings built in.
ppreborndolls@yahoo.com
Much like underwear, cloth nappies come in everything from everyday cheapies to luxury brands and limited edition prints. It’s for this reason that many moms become nappy addicts. Toys Suitable for Young Babies The very young baby (0 to three months) is not capable of manipulating toys so he has to experience them through the senses of sight, touch and sound. He loves looking at faces and prefers things that move and are bright and noisy. Mobiles that have interchangeable items and that can be changed every few days provide a variety. Provide a mirror for him to look at while he is on his tummy, as this will encourage him to look up to find the other baby face and strengthen his neck muscles at the same time. A variety of different rattles with different sounds will stimulate his already acute hearing. Encourage him to turn to the side where the sound is coming from. Toys to make Make toys that encourage them to stay on their tummy. So often mom says he doesn’t want to stay on his tummy as there is nothing to look at and it’s boring. Use an empty two-litre bottle, half fill it with water and add in a drop of food colouring, glitter confetti, tinsel and any other item you can find that will go through the hole. Close the lid tightly and seal it with nail varnish and place in front of him. The water moves and attracts his attention and keeps him on his tummy for a while longer, giving him time to strengthen the neck muscles. Laminate baby pictures and place low on a wall in front of him – he loves other faces. By Liz Victor. Contact: TOPTOTS, Kim Clark, 074 138 6400, kim@toptots. co.za, www.toptots. co.za. 55

Travel and Unabridged Birth Certificates From 1 June 2015 the legislature changes and all minors will require an unabridged birth certificate in order to travel through South African borders. It was going to take effect from 1 October 2014, but Home Affairs was not able to cope with the influx of applications, so the date was extended. Children travelling with both parents will only require an unabridged birth certificate. Children travelling with only one parent will require the birth certificate, as well as a written and signed affidavit from the other parent, allowing travel. Children travelling with adults who are not their biological parents will require the birth certificate, affidavits from both parents, and copies of the parents’ details. Unaccompanied minors would in addition also require copies of the details of the receiving person.

R1900
Leavit2Me can assist with these applications and they go to Home Affairs once a week. Whether both parents’ details are required on the application form depends on how the child was originally registered. If only one parent’s details were registered originally, then only that parent is required on the new application. If both parents were on the original registration, then both parents are required on the unabridged application, whether or not there is contact between the parents.

Tanya Jacobs Photography Capturing the essence of a newborn and those special moments in life is what makes Tanya Jacobs’ job so rewarding. When she’s not photographing weddings across KwaZulu-Natal, she’s working with newborns to the hushed sounds of a heartbeat simulator in her home studio in Durban. “I’ve decided to introduce newborn photography into my business to enjoy the creativity of it and be able to capture those very first, new moments,” said Tanya.

Tanya Jacobs Photography specialises in creative newborn portraits, using natural lighting and neutral wraps and props. “Natural light is naturally beautiful. A baby’s story is about to begin, I want to capture that from the start in the most natural way.” The combination of working with brides and newborns is a perfect fit for Tanya as when she’s not rushing about at a wedding, she’s slowing life down a little with a newborn shoot. “I love being able to photograph life’s most precious moments for a family and freezing that to last a lifetime. What’s an allergy? An allergy is an immune reaction to a substance in the environment called an allergen. When a child with allergies comes into contact with an allergen, either by touching it, breathing it, eating it, or having it injected, her body mistakenly views it as a dangerous invader and releases histamines and other chemicals to fight it off. These chemicals irritate the body and cause symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing, itching, and coughing. In some cases, an allergen can cause a severe reaction, called anaphylactic shock. This is a medical emergency, as the symptoms, including difficulty breathing and swelling, can be life threatening. Because the symptoms of nasal allergies are much like cold symptoms; runny nose, watery eyes, cough, nasal congestion and sneezing, it can be tough to tell the difference.

THE HEALTHY SNACK BOX
Ask yourself these questions: • Does it seem like your child always has a cold? Colds usually wind down in a week to 10 days; allergies don’t. • Is your child’s nose continually stuffy or running? • Is your child constantly wiggling, wiping, or pushing her nose up? • Is the mucus that drains from her nose clear and thin (as opposed to yellow or greenish and thick)? • Does she sneeze a lot? • Are her eyes itchy, red and watery? • Does the skin under her eyes look dark or purple or blue? • Does she breathe through her mouth? • Does she have a persistent dry cough? • Is her skin irritated or broken out in an itchy red rash?
Have fun in the safety of your own home. Let them dance, play and sing. I still remember what being little is like! Ages 7 - 13.

Babywearing – A Few Good Reasons to Carry Your Baby

Babies are born with an instinct to cuddle and be held. During pregnancy, the womb is a place of warmth and constant human contact, but once they are born, there is a massive change and it is no wonder they seem to sleep most peacefully when they are being held.

Noonoo Pie is a local company that makes babywearing stretch wrap carriers from soft, comfortable fabric which is made in South Africa. Simply wrap the fabric around you by following the easy instructions provided and your baby fits in snugly and safely. There are no buckles, belts or clasps which makes wearing the tie as comfortable as wearing your clothing. Due to the soft stretch of the fabric your baby’s weight is spread evenly over your back and shoulders so you don’t end up with uncomfortable pressure points, muscle strain or back-ache. Your can use the wrap from birth to 18 months.
8 & 9 April 2015
There is a solution and it’s called babywearing, which simply means that you use some sort of carrier to make it possible to hold your baby and have your hands free while carrying on with your daily activities. It’s not that your baby should never be put down, but rather that when your baby needs a cuddle you should have a carrier that is comfortable enough to allow you to do so.

Fun Door Signs Our world is full of signs and labels – we see them everywhere; outside, inside, on food and medicine even on children’s toys. Stop and go signs are the first signs to be understood by little ones. They soon get to know why cars have to stop at the red robot. Teaching our children about labels and signs and making them aware of warnings and dangers is important. There are also danger colours children can learn about. Red is a big danger colour used for danger tape and other warnings. Designing your own bedroom sign is a good way to acknowledge the use of signs and create an interesting label to hang on your door. A door sign helps children understand the meaning of: • Pride in personal space. • Maintaining a special area of their own. • Creating a label that says something about themselves. Wart and Fish wooden door hangers can be decorated with a variety of techniques. Try a collage using magazine pictures or your favourite stickers. A coat of bright paint and letters to spell your name is fun! Paint your sign with blackboard paint and use chalk to write different signs. Maybe there is a slogan you would like to choose. Door hangers are double-sided, so create a warning sign on the flipside and keep people out of your personal danger zone! While you are making your own door sign, create one for mum’s door. A fun activity and remember; mum should have the last word! For more information visit the Wart and Fish Facebook page: www.facebook.com/wartandfish.

Every Family Needs a Buzz Board Mom of three and owner of Such Fun, Shannon Harley, has designed and launched the innovative Buzz Board. “The Buzz Board idea grew out of desperation for organisation. I found myself with three kids at three different schools, each with their own list of activities. A teacher suggested we cut pictures from magazines of each activity and stick them onto paper so that the child could see what they had lined up for the day. This triggered me into coming up with something to make life a little easier,” explained Shannon. She created a magnetic board with activity magnets for herself and when her friends starting asking for them, she realised that this may be of interest to other parents and so the Buzz Board was born!

The Buzz Board is an A3 magnetic board with space for three children’s agendas. It comes in pink, blue and green. The activity magnets include the most common sports and activities that children partake in on a daily basis. The board doubles up as a dry wipe board and comes with a magnetic marker pen. Extra appointments or notes can be written in and rubbed off.
Working together to give you the edge!
“The best part of the Buzz Board is the reaction from the kids. They love the sense of responsibility and forward planning it gives them. They now have the ability to glance at the board each morning and pack their own bags and plan their own days,” said Shannon.

Perler Bead Bee Hive with Fingerprint Bees
Materials required: Hama/Perler beads, an iron, reinforcement card/plastic, paint, markers and a peter pointer finger or two!
her fingerprint bees to the hive and I finished it off for her by drawing on wings and eyes and feelers! Of course an older child can do this by themselves!
I was thinking of a way to make a hexagon shaped printing device, I wanted to make something that was not solid and had texture – this is the result! I used Hama/ Perler Beads. It worked very well, and the prints turned out fantastic!
The texture of this stamp really works well and we were really pleased with the results!
I built the hexagons, melted them together, and then reinforced the stamp with some sturdy card – if you are going to use it over and over again it may even be a better idea to use plastic so you can wash it.

We printed our bee hives onto card, sometimes the prints overlapped and did not join exactly, but that’s what gives our beehive character! When the beehive was dry, Emma added

How to Have a Conversation about Alcohol with Teens
031 - 561 2371 074 135 9511
littleeinsteinsdbn@gmail.com
Many young adults that leave the nest for tertiary institutions or live away from home for the first time will be confronted with alcohol at various social gatherings. SAB, which launched the 18+ campaign as a call to action for adults to be role models in the fight against underage drinking, says parents and adults shouldn’t take the foot off the pedal as children reach the legal drinking age. Young adults need accurate advice about alcohol consumption as they become legally eligible to drink. Advice on talking to young adults about their first legal drink and alcohol consumption: • Encourage them to always drink in moderation. • Highlight the dangers of intoxication, such as not getting home safely, being at risk of unprotected sex and not being in control. • Advise them to pace themselves by sipping their drinks rather than downing them and to alternate between alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. • Warn them to avoid drinking games and to avoid shots/shooters, as competitive drinking or taking shots can lead to consuming alcohol at a rapid rate, which can lead to dangerous levels of intoxication. • Remind them to keep hydrated by drinking water throughout a night out. • Point out the importance of eating before going out and to continue snacking throughout the night. • Make them aware of the alcohol percentages of different drinks. • Advise them to keep track of how much they drink, know their limits and to stick to them. • Caution them to never leave their drink unattended. • Remind them not to drink and drive. • Let them know that it’s okay to say “no” to friends. Family Dinners In today’s hectic world it can be difficult to find the time for the family to all come together. Parents get home after the children have gone to bed, and teens are eating their dinner in front of the television. Communication in the house is hurried and often argumentative and everyone is feeling tired and stressed. So how do you reconnect with your children and improve communication? You schedule connection time in your day, the same way you schedule extra-murals or social events. Having a family dinner where you all sit down at the dining room table to eat with no distractions, is a great way to facilitate conversation with your children and should provide a safe forum for them to express their feelings. Ask them questions, but try to avoid getting into arguments. Listen attentively and acknowledge their feelings. The importance of the conversations between parents and children at family dinners was highlighted again in recent research by Columbia University. “The more often children have dinners with their parents, the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use drugs, and that parental engagement fostered around the dinner table is one of the most potent tools to help parents raise healthy, drug-free children,” says Joseph Califano, Jr, the founder of The National Centre on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. The study also revealed that most teens recognise the importance of family dinners and 60% wish they could have dinner with their parents more than five times a week.

Danone NutriDay Schools Programme The Danone NutriDay Schools Programme has provided a platform of support for teachers and learners across South Africa, by providing schools with educational material that focuses on living a balanced and healthy life, with lessons covering three themes: Healthy Body, Healthy Mind and Healthy World. The NutriDay Schools Programme has become extremely popular and has expanded to include 1 200 schools in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Limpopo. Reaching close to one million learners, the programme encourages healthy habits through the use of fun, inspiring and entertaining platforms, including charts, posters and workbooks that are curriculum-aligned. It also informs learners, their parents and their teachers about the benefits of incorporating yoghurt into their daily diet. A yoghurt and a fruit is an ideal snack choice, especially as it is recommended to have milk, maas or yoghurt every day. As part of the programme, fun, interactive educational material that is CAPS aligned and grade specific is delivered to over a thousand schools. “Since the programme was launched in 2012, we’ve achieved the phenomenal milestone of reaching 2.4 million learners and 112 000 teachers across five provinces,” said Wesley Chetty of Danone NutriDay. Each year, NutriDay provides a theme, giving teachers fresh, new content that ties in with the overall programme. Schools can sign up for free and each learner in grades one to seven will get a workbook, and each teacher gets posters and charts for their classroom. Schools wanting to register with the programme can contact julene@hdiyouth.co.za or call 011 – 706 6016. www.mumsmail.com

Cool Party Trick Try this lava lamp experiment at home with your children. It will also make an awesome party activity and the children will learn something in the process! Lava Lamp You will need: • Water • Clear plastic bottle or clear cups • Food colouring • Oil • Salt
• Birthday Parties • Event Shows • Fun Science Extra-mural • Holiday Camps • School Educational Seminars and Shows
What to do: • Pour water into the plastic bottle until it is around one quarter full. • Then pour in oil until the bottle is nearly full and wait until the oil and water have separated. • Add around 12 drops of food colouring to the bottle (choose any colour you like). • Watch as the food colouring falls through the oil and mixes with water. • Pour salt into the bottle and things will start getting a little crazy like a real lava lamp.
Creating volcanoes and geysers, tornadoes and snowstorms, making jellyfish and revealing secret messages will make science memorable and fun!
Katya – 076 201 6958 | Lidia – 079 340 8212
So what? If you’ve tried the oil and water experiment you’ll know that the two don’t mix very well. The oil and water you added to the bottle separate from each other, with oil on top because it has a lower density than water. The food colouring falls through the oil and mixes with the water at the bottom. The salt you drop in releases small bubbles of carbon dioxide gas that rise to the top and take some of the coloured water along for the ride. The gas escapes when it reaches the top and the coloured water falls back down. Source: KZN Science Centre, 031 – 830 5379, www.kznsc.org, www.facebook.com/ KZNScienCentre. www.mumsmail.com

Letterland is a unique, phonics-based approach used extensively in South Africa to teach reading, writing and spelling to children aged three to eight years. Your child will love the information-rich Letterland characters that transform plain black letter shapes into child-friendly pictograms and the simple stories will not only assist in engaging your child’s attention, but will also assist in expanding your child’s vocabulary as well as assist in strengthening phonemic awareness. Look out for these two titles below: • Letterland: Alphabet of Rhymes: Young children will love this poetic adventure through Letterland. Containing 26 original rhymes, one for each letter of the alphabet, this exciting treasury of children’s verse is filled with important lessons on alliteration, rhyme and rhythm. • Letterland: Alphabet Adventures: Another exciting story from the highly successful Letterland series. This title contains all the wellloved Letterland characters and each spread will capture your child’s imagination with familiar settings and superb illustrations. • Wonders of Learning: Discover Inventions & Discoveries: This full colour educational omnibus filled with fascinating facts will take children of all ages on an adventure into the world of inventions and discoveries. It opens with the world premiere of Emelianov’s new production of one of Tchaikovsky’s undoubted masterpieces, the one-act ballet, Manfred. The narrative for this work of deep remorse and moral anguish comes from Lord Byron’s poem of the same name. The second half features two evergreen favourites – a suite from The Sleeping Beauty featuring the original Marius Petipa choreography and the one-act Romeo and Juliet choreographed by Emelianov. Crown of the Russian Ballet is proudly presented by impresario Edouard Miasnikov who specialises in sharing Russian culture with South African audiences in the interests of widening cultural exchange and dialogue. Readers’ Life Thank you so much for my Xeno prize – my grandson absolutely loved his present! Beverley Groger. Thank you for an excellent mag which I read from cover to cover. I simply love Mum’s Mail for a stay-at-home mum like me. I read the mag on the internet because we don’t receive it in Phoenix. I hope you add part-time employment for mums to keep busy during the day as their kids are back at school. Mary Gokul. A letter of thanks goes out to the amazing Mum’s Mail team for providing what I perceive to be a parents’ directory for all things child/parent related in less than 100 pages! Party ideas, gift ideas, and reputable medical services – it’s all in there. Page 36 of your 120th issue really grabbed my attention, as we are pedantic about suncare since my hubby has had three types of cancers, of which skin cancer is an ongoing battle. As parents we have such an influence and responsibility over our children’s precious lives – invest in good choices, they are worth it! Lizelle Bowen. Thank you for boosting my latest advert on Facebook – I got a full class in less than 24 hours! It worked like a dream! Thanks for the support – it helps a great deal. Danielle du Toit. Send your letters to editor@mumsmail.com. All published letters will receive double movie tickets from NuMetro Suncoast and the winning letter, from Lizelle Bowen, will receive a Chateaux Gateaux treat! Visit www.chateaugateaux.co.za. Chateau Gateaux Morningside’s Marvin Francis and Themba Mtambo were delighted to present Dr Shireen Mohammed with her prize from the February issue. 87

Meet The Mum’s Mail Team
Meet The Mum’s Mail Team
The mini mag you’re reading right now does not just happen by accident. It takes a LOT of hard work to collate these adverts, articles and competitions on a monthly basis into one handy little guide. So we thought it’s about time you met the team behind the scenes! But rather than the Editor telling you what her staff does, they decided to tell you themselves... Alice Leah - Editor editor@mumsmail.com • 031 – 573 1731 (ext 5) Basically I have the final say on what goes into the magazine, as well as casting a beady eye on the grammar, spelling and punctuation – my pet hate if not done properly. I love selling advertising space and I network at a number of different business meetings on a regular basis to promote Mum’s Mail. I get to try out some very fabulous spas and getaways (and some not so fabulous ones – perhaps I should write a book about those ones...). Daniella Fensome - Accounts admin@mumsmail.com • 031 – 573 1731 (ext 3) I am the Mafia! I send the bills and collect the money and if you don’t pay... I take things further.
Ross Leah - Distribution I am the testosterone in the office and make sure the mags go where they need to. I also regularly have to sort out the girls’ email and IT issues (often it’s a user error).
Sarah Mackintosh - Sub-Editor sarah@mumsmail.com • 072 384 9553 I am the one who sources and gathers information for articles and I have the interesting (to say the least) task of editing this information to create riveting and useful articles for our readers. I get to test some fabulous products and services, often from the comfort of my lounge (I have a baby, so I work from home – bonus). Working from home is sometimes not a perk – when the office gets doughnuts and cake delivered from happy clients (which is quite often), I’m notified a little too late to get there to share in the bounty. Bev Delew - Advertising Sales bev@mumsmail.com • 031 – 573 1731 (ext 4) Alice nags me to “sell, sell, sell” (no pressure), so my main function is to book loads of ads while making sure my clients receive the BEST service and most exposure. I offer marketing advice and enjoy seeing my clients’ businesses thrive. I review fab products/services, a nice perk of the job – there has to be ONE! I design our monthly marketing material which is great fun (Wendy watch your back), yet was not allowed to Photoshop my nose smaller in the profile pic! Tercia Schick - Advertising Sales tercia@mumsmail.com • 082 781 8611 I am basically part of the furniture, and I make sure your ads look fab. I am super friendly and very happy to assist with your marketing needs. I am rather partial to testing products a la Bonny’s Best Buys...You might bump into me at a few business network meetings (I only go if the food is good). We are a fun and crazy bunch, each with our own quirks – I drive some of my colleagues (Editor’s Comment: ONLY Bev) up the wall with my “nervous leg jerking syndrome”. Natalie Wilcox - General Enquiries reception@mumsmail.com • 031 – 573 1731 (ext 1) I do whatever Alice tells me to do, which includes writing birthday cards for advertisers (Editor’s Comment: bust, thanks Nats) and posting movie tickets, wrapping prizes, grocery shopping for the office (including the loo rolls – exciting stuff), checking the post box, posting all the subscribers’ mags, dealing with odd queries from readers, notifying competition winners (who sometimes think it’s a hoax), nagging clients to send their changes for their adverts, all the boring stuff the other staff do not want to do i.e. filing and archiving. Wendy Offer - Graphic Designer Being the digital wizard in the office, I am responsible for all the artwork you see in the mag, on the website and on the newsletters. So basically, I am very important, the MOST important person at Mum’s Mail (okay Alice is more important as she pays my salary).
