Meet The Cover Stars

Meet the Cover Stars Down Syndrome Awareness Day is on 21 March and our cover stars this month are a family that has experience with this condition.

As a family their life is not really that different to any other family with young children. They still go on holidays, go to the beach, play in the pool and watch TV, but behind the scenes they try and do as much therapy as they can, as they firmly believe the more effort you put in, the more you will get out.

Nicola and Christian Rees have two sons – Quinn (6) and Zac (3). They moved to South Africa from the UK six years ago when Christian was offered a job here.

“Zac is very much the heart of our family. Once people get to know him he secures a special place in their heart, so he is regularly greeted with warm loving smiles. Having Zac has taught us compassion and understanding and to take pleasure in the small everyday things.”

Zac, who was born with Down Syndrome, is a cheeky and determined little boy who loves cars, music, iPads and phones – he can find any song, video or photo on an iPhone in seconds and will spend hours playing in a car or with his toy cars. He also loves to swim and do anything his big brother is doing.

“As a parent, I’d like people who don’t know Zac to understand that whilst he may have Down Syndrome, that is only part of him. First and foremost he is a little boy like any other with feelings and desires. It may take him longer to achieve goals that come easily to your child, but he will get there and at the end of the day he Quinn is a lively, energetic boy who is just wants to play, make friends and have always on the go. He dreams of being a fun,” explains Nicola. builder and enjoys spending his free time digging and constructing in his ‘building Language is really important to families of site’. He is good at most sports, enjoys children with Down Syndrome. This means school and loves going on safari. The boys using words like “retard”, “downie” or get on very well. Like any siblings, they even “down’s kid” are disrespectful. It puts know how to wind each other up but the child in a box and suggests that’s all love to play fight. Quinn is very caring and they are. If you can say “a child with Down loving towards his brother and Zac adores Syndrome” instead, it shows more respect Quinn and will copy anything he does. and means a lot to the family. “We have met many wonderful people that we would never have met without Zac. We have experienced amazing amounts of compassion and genuine love that we never expected – from a hairdresser who understands how traumatic a haircut is for Zac to therapists who willingly give of their time and experience to help your child grow and teachers who have welcomed him with open arms to their mainstream class and learnt Makaton to help support him better,” says Nicola.

Travel Hacks Here are some travel tips that Bryony Parr from Oh So Organised! uses to make a long journey as enjoyable as possible. Store all your travel accessories together – luggage (bags inside of bags), travel pillows, vanity cases, locks and keys, earplugs, travel scale, laundry bags, shoe bags and adapters – keep them all in your suitcase so they’re all in one place when you’re ready to pack. I take my suitcase out a week before and every time I remember something I might need I just drop it into my bag. Packing in a hurry often means you will forget something, however if you are able to put items in gradually as you think of them, then when it comes time to pack – it’s much less stressful. I always do a bit of research on the airports I’m travelling through. That way I can search the terminal and find out what amenities are available and to see how long it may take to transfer. If the airport I am transiting through has showers (many do), I pack some travel body wash, moisturizer, toothpaste and toothbrush a face towel and flip-flops into my hand luggage so that I can have a shower half way to freshen up, taking a change of top and underwear – these items are light and small and make all the difference during a long haul flight. Use a thin fabric bag or zip-lock for all the items you will need during a long journey so that you can put your hand luggage away and just have an easy access bag with you during the journey. Stay tuned next month for more travel tips! Source: Bryony Parr, Oh So Organised, bryony@ohsoorganised.com.

Travelling Overseas with Young Kids The notion of having to travel with kids on an international trip is daunting – is it safe? Will there be everything I need? The flight is so long; won’t we need to get them so many new things? My child cries at the most awkward moments. These are all valid concerns, but here are some tools to feel more comfortable about travelling anywhere in the world as a family.

avoid queueing with restless young kids. When checking in on-line you can pre-seat yourselves in the optimum spot for you to best cater to the needs of your children – closer to the bathroom, an aisle seat if they get up a lot, or window seat if they are the curious type. Ensure that you have a fully-equipped carry-on bag for all family members. Make sure they are entertained, take extra food, a change of clothes, really comfortable clothing to sleep in, a make shift toiletry bag and a few games. Remember to place important contact numbers and or emergency numbers into you carry-on bags just in case.

If you are a South African citizen travelling with kids you must travel with their unabridged birth certificate; you won’t get further than check-in without it. If both parents are not travelling with the children, contact your nearest travel agent for more information. This goes hand-in-hand with visas – if you do not have a visa, even just for one of the destinations you will simply Stay tuned next month for more travel tips be transiting in, you will NOT be allowed to from the Webtours team. travel. Tips to Beat Stressed Economic Conditions In the light of increased monthly expenses for South Africans, Wikus Olivier, Debt Management Expert at DebtSafe, urges people to review their current budgets so that increased expenses on the one hand is balanced with decreased expenses on the other. “The biggest mistake consumers can make is to carry on with out-dated budgets that do not take extra expenses into account. The accumulated overflow will eventually result in additional credit card debt which will be almost impossible to repay unless their income is also suddenly increased,” says Olivier. Now is the time to balance your budget by saying no to those luxury expenses that are tipping your budget over the edge, such as fast food, pay TV, garden services, pool cleaning services and other luxury activities or items.

Olivier adds that it might also be a good idea to reduce payments on investments or retirement annuities. “And, if at all possible, try to earn an extra income – at least this will help meeting all your obligations,” he says. DebtSafe recommends a few helpful tips to save fuel: • Use high quality fuels – using high quality fuels will allow the vehicle to run more efficiently. • Check your tyre pressure correctly inflated tyres results increased mileage of approximately 3.3%. • When approaching a traffic light, ease your foot off the petrol and anticipate the lights to go red. By driving slowly already from a distance, you will use less fuel! The less you use the brake, the less fuel you use. • Turn off your air-con – an air conditioning unit requires more fuel and produces increased fuel emissions.

Rave Restaurant Reviews

Each month we will be reviewing a few local restaurants. Here are this month’s top picks.

Story Durban: Where Magic Happens Damian Veneruso is the executive chef at Story Durban. His dream is to let people experience something different every time they visit Story. “People say home is where the heart is. I agree with that – my work is my home, it’s my passion and my heart is on every plate,” says Damian. Food should tell a story and at Story Durban they believe in the weird and wonderful when it comes to food and wine. They want people to experience great food and wine in a beautiful venue where they can then tell their own story. Andrew and I visited Story recently and were blown away by the quality of the food and service. The highlight of the evening, of course, was the food – it was simply stunning! It was obviously created with such passion and flair but it didn’t just look good, it tasted divine! I opted for the Arancini with 10 month aged gouda, candied bacon and tomato soup to start, followed by lamb shank with a roasted tomato mash while Andrew had the haloumi with balsamic dressing to start, followed by their superb venison with a citrus mash and a dark chocolate and orange sauce. This is an evening out that you don’t want to miss!

Café Vigour Café Vigour at Suncoast Casino features a simple, wholesome menu of delicious food options in a setting that embodies the laid back Durban vibe. Menu options incorporate breakfast and dessert harvest tables, popular signature dishes, local favourites, fresh salads, sandwiches with intriguing and delectable fillings, burgers and pizzas with a difference and wraps. I was lucky enough to be invited as a guest at Café Vigour so I went along with my family on a Sunday evening. I met the Drinks and Hospitality Manager and the Sous-Chef. The food was delicious – I had a Tikka Chicken Salad, which was very healthy but very tasty too! Andrew had their signature curry dish, my son had a chicken and prawn pasta dish and my daughter had the kids’ burger. All this was polished off with a lovely bottle of rose (for the adults) and a ‘Death by Chocolate Cake’ – although we lived to tell the story! The staff were very attentive and we had a thoroughly enjoyable evening! When our dinner had settled, the kids went and played some games in the arcade which was a real treat as they never get to do that! All in all, we had a wonderful evening and I would definitely recommend that you try Café Vigour!

TAFTA MEALS ON WHEELS

Method: Turn oven on to 170˚C. Cut and trim excess fat off chicken pieces but keep the skin on the chicken. Place in oven proof dish with chicken skin facing up. Peel and grate the onion on a course grater. Peel and crush the garlic. Mix all the ingredients together in a mixing bowl. Pour sauce over the chicken pieces – make sure all pieces are evenly covered. Bake at 170˚C for one hour – uncovered. After an hour prick the chicken with a fork and check that no blood runs out – the chicken must be cooked through and golden brown and the sauce should be sticky. Don’t worry if the chicken is a little dark in colour – this is from the sauce.

World Down Syndrome Day World Down Syndrome Day, observed on 21 March every year, is a global awareness day commemorated to create awareness about Down Syndrome and to communicate facts about the condition. What is Down syndrome? Down Syndrome is a chromosomal disorder arising at conception. There is an extra number 21 chromosome (Trisomy 21) which causes delays in physical and intellectual development Facts about Down Syndrome • People with Down Syndrome have mild to moderate mental damage. • The cause of Down Syndrome is not related to age, race, religion or socioeconomic situations. • One in 1 000 babies born in developed countries and 1 in 650 babies born in developing countries is affected by Down Syndrome.

• 80 percent of children affected by Down Syndrome are born from mothers under the age of 35, although women over the age of 35 are at a higher risk of having a child with Down Syndrome. • Although Down Syndrome cannot be cured, there is a variety of medical options to treat problems associated with the disease. • Children with Down Syndrome can be included in normal schools with regular academic procedures. • People with Down Syndrome can live up to the age of 50 to 55. • Adequate access to healthcare, early intervention programmes and inclusive education, as well as appropriate research, are vital to the growth and development of the individual. Dr Des @ Home Behaviours are messages – not diagnoses (Part 1): About half of all children with ADHD also have a learning disability, depression or an anxiety disorder. When a child can’t sit still or complete a task, she is often labelled ADHD. If she has excessive worries, the label is anxiety disorder. Stress and anxiety are a normal part of life for children. Moderate anxiety helps children push themselves to succeed at home and in school. When the level of anxiety is greater than expected, we suspect that there is an anxiety disorder and pure anxiety may cause restlessness that can be interpreted as hyperactivity. An accurate diagnosis is critical to develop an appropriate treatment plan. It should be determined whether the anxiety is primary or secondary. Distinguishing between these conditions requires a full evaluation by a professional who is willing to dig deep for clues. Written by Dr Des Ferreria

Understanding Eczema in Children Paediatric Dermatologist, Dr Carol Hlela, specialising in children’s skin conditions and diseases, spearheads the Paediatric Dermatology Department at Red Cross War Memorial Hospital and has been advocating for better and simpler ways to treat Eczema in children.

latest trends in treatment as well as current types of diagnoses. Dr Hlela gives some useful and practical advice for the treating of Eczema, to help manage the disease and keep it under control. “Keep a diary of what makes you flare up, note time of day, specific symptoms, and how you are able to manage them,” she says. She also emphasizes that moisturising is key, especially after a bath or shower. To prevent flares, avoid soap wherever possible, wash clothes with gentle detergents and never use fabric softener.

Eczema is a non-specific term for the collection of skin conditions that causes the skin to become inflamed and irritated, bringing about a red and itchy rash. This term is widely used – however, there are different types and categories that one should understand to determine the correct treatment. Reduce the Excess Sugar in Your Diet It’s no longer a secret that the vast majority of us are blissfully unaware sugar addicts. Modern conveniences in consumables are great at making life easier in the short term, but what about the long term implications? Studies have revealed that sugar is as, if not more, desirable than addictive drugs such as cocaine. It’s hard to believe that as parents we are still largely oblivious to the long term, damaging effects of over consuming sugar-dense foods and beverages. So how do we reduce the excess sugars from our diets? Become aware, understand that food is medicine and always try to ensure that all consumables remain as close as possible to their natural state. Read labels carefully – not all free or added sugars are labelled as sugars. For example: agave nectar, corn sweetener, dextrose, honey, corn syrup, sucrose, fructose, glucose and molasses. Limit sugar added beverages, cited as being responsible for the majority of added sugar in US diets. Reduce your family’s super sweet sugar tolerance with a moderated sugar and bolstered wholefood diet. Over time consumables high in sugar will start tasting too sweet as your tolerance returns to its normal natural state. Bake instead of buying treats. Homemade treats will contain less added and highly synthetic sweeteners, and you have the ability to further reduce the sugar content with natural sweeteners like fruits or vegetables. *Terms & conditions apply

The key to all healthy living is moderation and a balanced diet. This is not to say indulgent foods high in fat and/or sugar can’t be enjoyed, they can, but just not daily.

Support Talk Sign Sticker Day Imagine how lonely it must be when you don’t understand what the people around you are saying, and nobody understands what you are trying to say. This is how people who are Deaf or hard of hearing feel around those who don’t understand basic Sign Language.

and for it to be taught as a syllabus subject at schools and tertiary institutions.

• To encourage South Africans to learn Sign Language. • To raise money through the sale of Talk Sign stickers. The funds raised are used to educate and find employment for people who are Deaf or hard of hearing. • To inspire as many people as possible to wear the stickers on Talk Sign Day (Friday, 10 March), and pay tribute to those living with this disability. • To put pressure on government to make Sign Language the 12th official language

The KZN Blind and Deaf Society is appealing to the public to support Deaf awareness and the promotion of basic Sign Language. Show your support by purchasing a Talk Sign sticker for only R10 and wearing it on 10 March. You can buy these from the Mum’s Mail offices at 2 Romsey Grove, Durban North.

If every person could learn some basic Sign Language, it would break down barriers, not only for Deaf people, but for others with communication problems, whether it be autism, brain damage due to stroke or The Talk Sign Campaign was launched by traumatic injury or Childhood Apraxia of the KZN Blind and Deaf Society in 2014 to Speech. Fitness and Nutrition Tips Are you tired of putting in the effort at the gym and not seeing results? Many people show the drive, determination, and consistent effort, but don’t reach their goals. If this sounds familiar here are some insightful tips designed to help you maintain healthy eating habits. Healthy Eating Nutritional Basics Ask almost any personal trainer and they’ll tell you that regardless of your training goals, healthy eating is the backbone. Food is what fuels your body to reach your goals and without proper nutrition through quality foods, you’re likely to stall. As a result, if possible, eat organic foods and, above all else, maintain a balanced diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, complex carbohydrates, complete proteins, and fats including such things as fish oils and flaxseeds. Prepare Ahead Regardless of what you’re doing, preparing yourself in advance gives you the best chance to accomplish your goals. Your approach to nutrition should be no different. It’s best to prepare for your upcoming day by prepping all your food in advance. This will ensure you do not eat bad foods or skip meals. Eat more Eating three – five daily meals (about every three hours) will stimulate your metabolism (including two mini meals between the three basic meals). Portion control You’ll be eating more often, so paying attention to portions is extremely important. You need to make sure chicken breasts, (and) meats are no larger than your palm and that spaghettis, (and) pastas, are no larger than your fists. Use smaller bowls, plates, and cups because studies show people serve themselves 20 to 40% more food when they’re using larger plates. Oral Health Tips Taking care of your family’s gums and teeth is vital to a healthy life. World Oral Health Day is on 20 March and the key to good oral health, according to Dr D Govender (principal dentist of Family Dental Care Group) is PREVENTION! He suggests the following: • The earlier the better: Dental care should begin as soon as a child’s first tooth appears, usually around six months. • Seal off trouble. Permanent molars come in around age 6. Thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth can prevent decay in the pits and fissures. This can significantly reduce caries. You need to talk to your dentist professional. • Brush twice a day and floss daily. Brushing removes plaque from the tooth surfaces. Clean between the teeth once a day with floss to remove plaque from between the teeth, where the toothbrush can’t reach. Flossing is essential to prevent gum disease.

• Rinse or chew gum after meals. A mouth wash, in addition to daily brushing and flossing, can increase the cleanliness of your mouth. Antimicrobial mouth rinses reduce bacteria and plaque activity, which cause gingivitis and gum disease. Chewing sugar-free gum after a meal can also protect your teeth as this increases saliva flow, which naturally washes away bacteria and neutralises acid. • Avoid risk factors: Tobacco, excessive alcohol and unhealthy diets – especially those rich in sugar. • Regular dental check-ups: Everyone from the age of two should visit their dentist every six months for a regular check-up and a professional cleaning. So remember: Good oral hygiene habits, avoiding risk factors and having a regular dental check-up from early in life can help maintain optimal oral health into old age. Holiday Hair Care Tips Worrying about our hair in Durban climates can be challenging, as we are faced with the humidity and sun in the summer months and dryer climates in Autumn/Winter. So here are some easy tips to care for your hair during the holiday seasons: In summer, we spend more time outdoors and on the beach. Keep your hair hydrated by spraying on a leave-in conditioner, especially if you’re swimming. Take an empty spray bottle and dilute your conditioner with equal parts water so it’s easy to apply and carry with you.

Make sure to regularly trim split ends – this keeps longer hair looking healthy. In the cooler months, it’s as important to hydrate the hair by making sure you condition the ends after shampooing. When you’re on holiday you want less fuss with your hair, so if you have curly hair, apply Argan oil and put it in a loose top bun when you sleep, so the next day the curl is more controlled. When you see your scalp dry and flaky, get a cleansing shampoo or a dandruff shampoo to eliminate the flakiness. Source: Jen at Jen’s Hair Couture, www. jenshaircouture. co.za. www.mumsmail.com

TinyTrack: A Phone for Your Child, Peace of Mind for You Quantifi, the company that has brought some of the world’s best wearable technology devices to South Africa, has launched TinyTrack, a kids’ watch with builtin GPS tracker. With TinyTrack watches, you can easily call and track your child from your smartphone by means of an app available on the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android). Satellite tracking technology, that makes use of AGPS and LBS locating systems, allows for precise positioning of your child, with the ability to set up a virtual fence, and an alert system that sends you a notification whenever your child leaves the boundaries you have set on a street map. Communication functions on the TinyTrack include making and receiving calls to and from pre-set contacts, sending and receiving voice messages as well as oneway text messaging from your app to the TinyTrack watch. In case of an emergency, your child can push the SOS button, which immediately activates an alert on your phone, showing your child’s location. The watch will also automatically activate a 30-second sound recording, enabling you to hear your child and any other nearby voices or sounds. You will receive a notification when the TinyTrack watch is switched off, or when the battery is low.

There are five sets in the range including the Breakfast Cooking Set, the Cooking Essential Set, Pizza Cooking Set, Burger Cooking Set and Baking Kitchen Set. Chiquita Patrizi, spokesperson for Prima Toys, believes that teaching your children about food preparation from an early age will instil in them an appreciation for, and knowledge of, food.

FUN GALORE

“It’s never too early for kids to start learning how to cook. Good nutrition, learning about ingredients, discovering new flavours and knowing how to follow a recipe starts in your kitchen at home. With the new MasterChef Junior range of products parents can be assured that their children are using kid-safe and kid-friendly products with non-slip silicone grips. Of course adults still need to supervise the cooking process where heat is involved,” says Patrizi.

Lunch Box Ideas for an Epic School Year Preparing lunch boxes can be a mission, especially if you’re pushed for time. These tips will help you plan ahead and get organised: Avoid issuing tuck shop money regularly. Make it a rare treat. You can’t control what the tuck shop sells, but you can control the kind of snacks you put in their lunchboxes. Always check food packaging. Avoid snacks that are high in fats and select snacks that are unprocessed where possible. Prepare school lunches the night before. Lunch that is prepped the night before will reduce the chance of you issuing tuck shop money last minute. Get your kids to drink more water. The sensation of thirst is often masked as hunger. So if your children have eaten recently and still tell you they’re hungry, first try getting them to drink water or diluted fruit juice. Lunch box ideas to help your kids start the year strong. It’s important that your child’s lunch box includes a lot more than nutritionally-empty treats like chips, chocolates and refined foods. Their lunch boxes should be packed with wholesome snacks for growing bodies, like nuts and seeds that are high in Omega 3 for brain function and dried fruit that is a great source of fibre. This is particularly important for kids between the ages of six and 12. They need a balanced, healthy diet to give them the right fuel to grow, boost their immune systems, metabolisms, cognitive development, and proper formation of bones, muscles and teeth.

Boost Your Child’s Brain with Protein Power

PRE-SCHOOL AND BABY CARE

So why didn’t your grandparents have food allergies? They ate food that had no preservatives and was not processed; foods came from farms and markets. The meats came from animals that were not pumped full of chemicals. You seldom heard of dieting, not like today when most foods we eat can cause bloating and obesity with all the added chemicals, additives, stabilizers, preservatives, food colouring, flavouring, and GMOs. Added to that, the water was free of chlorine and contaminants.

So what is the solution for us? Let’s get practical. Wake up and drink room temperature, filtered purified water – this gets your metabolism going and alleviates your nightly dehydration. Eating a breakfast that contains protein improves your child’s academic performance, behaviour and overall psychological wellbeing. What are natural memory boosters? • Eggs • sardines • organ meat • fatty fish • dairy products • fruit and veg. What is a balanced breakfast with protein? Egg and bacon, oats and milk, yoghurt and fruit or a smoothie with protein powder. Supplement! What should your child be taking to fill the gaps? At minimum a good plant-based certified organic food supplement and an omega 3, which is brain food! Lunchboxes: include unprocessed snacks balanced with protein, e.g., carrot/celery/ snap peas with hummus or cottage cheese, biltong, cheese, fruit or nuts. Lunch: give your kids a medium meal with protein. Mid afternoon snack: fruit and protein. Dinner: should be served at least two hours before bedtime and should be a medium to small meal with a protein. Older children can have a healthy snack before bedtime. Homework Tips Parents are always encouraged to assist their children with homework. However if you struggled at school yourself, it may cause unnecessary anxiety for both of you. Avoid this by being involved in your child’s learning from the beginning. Tips for homework:

A KID’S HOME AWAY FROM HOME! 133 INNES ROAD, Enrolments for 2017 now open MORNINGSIDE • 3 months to Grade 1 • Extra mural activities • Qualified, professional teachers & assistants • Pro-active, goal orientated, caring environment • Healthy & delicious menu – breakfast, lunch & snacks provided • CCTV Camera • Aftercare now available

1. Set aside a time of the day and focus on the homework. Choose a place conducive to study. 2. Make sure that you have the correct supplies and any other necessary resources. 3. Your child must have access to a computer with an internet connection. 4. Know the school’s homework policy. Plan ahead and discourage ‘cramming’. Keep a homework diary. Make note of assignment, exam period and cycle test dates. 5. If your child becomes frustrated, try to assist them. If you cannot help, make a note for your child to ask their teacher. 6. Use a reward system to motivate your child extrinsically and intrinsically. 7. If you have any concerns about the amount or level of homework, discuss this with the child’s teacher. 8. Consistently praise your child for their effort. Part of learning is the process, not just the outcome. 9. Be involved in a supervisory capacity only, otherwise the teacher will have a distorted view of your child’s capability. 10. Homework must be seen as a positive thing that helps your child succeed at school.

ADHD Treatment Programme Childhood ADD/ADHD This disorder, if not diagnosed or appropriately treated, can have a devastating effect on a child’s development academically and emotionally. It is often detected in preschool, causing much anguish for parents who don’t know where to go or what to do. It is with this in mind that we developed the one stop multidisciplinary programme. It is well known that this approach is more effective in managing ADHD as it is a neurodevelopmental disorder, often having other disorders mimicking or coexisting with it, such as depression, anxiety, central auditory processing disorder and learning disabilities. The ADHD Treatment Programme has been designed to ensure these are properly screened for and appropriately managed. The team comprises a medical doctor, educational psychologist, occupational therapist, audiologist and dietician. To find out more visit adhdtreatmentprogramme.com.

Adult ADD/ADHD This condition is often more serious in adulthood as the consequence of impulsive, inattentive behaviour can be more dire, affecting relationships and employment prospects. Many adults will be unaware they even have ADHD as it might not have been detected in childhood. Adults with ADHD will often just feel restless and unfulfilled, often drowning in the chaos of their disorganised lives and frustrated by their inability to achieve their true potential. This often leads to anxiety or a depressed, demoralised mood. Often it is only their partners, colleagues or friends that recognise the problem they have, further delaying diagnosis and effective management.

Educated Life

Getting Back Into Studying As an Adult Are you feeling a bit restless? Do you feel curious to find out more about a field for which you have a passion but do not have the required qualification? Then why not explore your options to study further? You may be saying to yourself: “But I am too old and my brain has stopped working. I cannot read anything more than the labels on food packaging and my life is hectic without trying to fit in studying.” Caversham Education Institute wants to challenge some of those thoughts with their findings from teaching ‘more mature’ students. They frequently arrive feeling uncertain but come with a deeper understanding of self, their passion and purpose. They know what is important and have learned how to make sacrifices to reach their goals. They have a mind that has juggled nappy changes with cooking a meal for family and friends to making a meagre budget stretch. They have the skills to plan and execute complex tasks.

Above all they come with life experiences to share and enrich the learning of fellow students. So why not explore enrolling for a course or qualification? You could gain a whole lot more than anticipated. Studying will broaden your outlook and provide additional knowledge and skills. It will give you the opportunity to meet others and build a network of people who have the same interests. You will gain confidence and a sense of achievement and the possibility of a new career. What do you have to lose? Take the next step into your future by finding a course for you. Written by Jill Sachs, Executive Director of Caversham Education Institute, www.cavershaminstitute.co.za.

Umhlanga Pre-Primary School Umhlanga Pre-Primary School opened its doors in 1977 at the Umhlanga Baptist Church and in 2014 the school relocated to new premises at the Fellowship Baptist Church in Somerset Park. This year the school celebrates its 40th birthday. They cater for learners from 18 months to Grade R and offer an aftercare facility. At Umhlanga Pre-Primary, they create a fun environment where children can have a good start to becoming happy adults. They provide a safe, nurturing and loving environment where children are free to explore every developmental area. They are committed to educating the whole child - intellectually, physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually. Class sizes are small, offering a wide variety of toys and equipment for child play. The school offers an integrated education programme which follows the national curriculum and incorporates

Christian principles and values. A wide range of learning areas is covered and a good balance of teacher-directed times and free play periods give the children opportunities to learn through play, creativity and exploration. The team is made up of dedicated, qualified teachers, each with their own assistant, who together provide warmth, love and safety to ensure each child’s individual needs are met. This year they introduced a weekly Music and Movement class to each group. An Occupational Therapist and Speech Therapist conduct weekly sessions at the school. The curriculum followed by the school is as laid down by the Department of Education, following the Foundation Phase CAPS Policy. The aftercare programme includes a quiet rest time, supervised indoor and outdoor play as well as a cooked meal and an afternoon snack. Laidback Life

Bargain Books Book Reviews For children • The 78-Storey Treehouse by Andy Griffiths & illustrated by Terry Denton. Just when you thought that the treehouse couldn’t possibly get any bigger, more exciting or spectacular, they went and added another thirteen storeys! Join Andy and Terry in their spectacular new 78-Storey Treehouse. They’ve added a whole heap of new levels including a drive-thru car wash, a combining machine, a scribbletorium, an ALL_BALL sports stadium, Andyland, Terrytown, a high-security potato chip story facility and an open-air movie theatre. What are you waiting for? Come on up! For young adults • Wing Jones by Katherine Webber. With a grandmother from China and another from Ghana, fifteen-year-old Wing Jones is often caught between worlds. She doesn’t blend in but she doesn’t really stand out either. But when tragedy strikes, Wing discovers a talent for running she never knew she had. Wing’s speed could bring her family everything it needs. It could also stop Wing from getting the one thing she wants. This is a touching novel about the freedom and complications of talent and the determination to use it. For adults • The Nowhere Man by Gregg Hurwitz. Spoken about only in whispers, it is said that when the Nowhere Man is reached by the truly desperate, he can and will do anything to save them. Evan Smoak is the Nowhere Man. Taken from a group home at twelve, Evan was raised and trained as part of the orphan programme, an off-the-books operation designed to create deniable intelligence assets – i.e. assassins. Evan was Orphan X. He broke away from the programme, using everything he learned to disappear and reinvent himself as the Nowhere Man. But the new head of the orphan programme hasn’t forgotten about him and is using all of his assets – including the remaining orphans – to track down and eliminate Smoak. • Good Me Bad Me by Ali Land. This gripping new psychological thriller is all set to be one of 2017’s most intense releases. Abounding with reinvention, moral agony and horrifying trauma, this is definitely one to look out for. Annie’s mother is a serial killer. The only way she can make it stop is to hand her in to the police. But out of sight is not out of mind. The secrets of her past won’t let her sleep, even with a new family and name - Milly. A fresh start - now, surely, she can be whoever she wants to be. But Milly’s mother is a serial killer. And blood is thicker than water… She is, after all, her mother’s daughter. Contact: Bianca Adendorff, Bargain Books, 012 - 663 1828, bianca@bargainbooks.co.za, www.bargainbooks.co.za.
