Sumptuous Christmas Ballet at the Playhouse
A sumptuous ballet, A Christmas Carol: The Story of Scrooge, presented by The Playhouse Company in partnership with the Cape Town City Ballet, will have two performances at Durban’s Playhouse Opera theatre over the festive season.
The ballet is among highlights of the Durban arts body’s jam-packed Christmas season programme which includes a jazz concert, a comedy show, a wildlife-themed Gcina Mhlophe production for the young, and a lavish Christmasthemed concert with the KZN Philharmonic and guest artists. Inspired by the famous Charles Dickens novella, first published in London in 1843, A Christmas
Carol: The Story of Scrooge will be performed in the Playhouse Opera theatre at 7.30pm on Friday and Saturday 6 and 7 December and 3pm on Sunday 8 December. Perfect fare for the whole family this holiday season, this fun and enchanting dance delight has been created by South African dance doyenne Veronica Paeper and will feature lighting design by Wilhelm Disbergen. The production, featuring 40 dancers, tells the story of the elderly, mean and misery Ebenezer Scrooge, who gets opportunities to reassess the error of his ways and become a kinder and gentler man after he is visited by ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future one cold Christmas Eve.
Tickets for A Christmas Carol: The Story of Scrooge cost R150, R180 and R220. They can be bought at the Playhouse box-office – phone (031) 3699 596/40 – or online and at Pick n Pay outlets via WebTickets (the customer support line is 086 111 0005). Pictured on the front cover is Kirstel Patterson from the Cape Town City Ballet. WIN! WIN! WIN! Mum’s Mail has 4 tickets to “A Christmas Carol: The Story of Scrooge” to give away (valid only for 8 December at 3pm). Visit www. mumsmail.com to enter.

A Country Break at Brahman Hills
My husband and I were recently invited to experience a weekend at Brahman Hills in the KZN Midlands. I can honestly say it was the most relaxing weekend I’ve had since having our son six years ago! We left our son with Granny for the weekend and off we went! We stayed in one of the self-catering cottages at Springholm, a short drive from the main hotel. It is the most beautiful setting, with abundant bird life and glorious peace and quiet! Our cottage was right on the dam and the view was spectacular, especially at sunset.
Brahman cattle. The cottages and rooms have been tastefully decorated and equipped with quality utilities. All guests at Springholm have unrestricted access to the facilities at Brahman Hills.
Menu - which is what we got to taste. The food was superb, and the atmosphere lent itself to a romantic date night, which we so seldom get to enjoy! We enjoyed decadent three-course meal and a bottle of wine.
We were also treated to a luxurious 90 minute spa treatment at Brahman Hills Spa– Dave had a full body hot stone massage with a detox bath, and I had a pampering 90 minute facial and shoulder massage. We were so spoilt and the therapists are amazing – I can’t wait to go back there!
Before leaving on the Sunday, we were treated AGAIN to a Sunday carvery lunch at The Stables. This was amazing and the choice of food was lovely. It was a great way to end off a fantastic weekend!
Overall our stay at Brahman Hills was memorable – our accommodation was There is a variety of dining comfortable (I especially If you are looking for a place options at Brahman Hills, and enjoyed sleeping in in the to unwind and get away from we tried most of them! Bring Health and Life to Your Garden
Contribute your own little piece of Eden to the Earth and invite the buzz, whir and tweet of some colourful little guests that will appreciate it as much as you do. The beautiful colours and scents that attract these special creatures are also a treat for your own senses.
Edibles in your Garden Cape Gooseberries (Physalis edulis) is a quick-growing annual or perennial fruit plant that originates in South America. It has been grown extensively in many parts of South Africa for the little golden berries that are produced in abundance, on bushes that can reach a height of about 1m. Gooseberries are a worthwhile fruit to grow in your garden as they are excellent for making jams, jellies, desserts, chutneys and wine. Grow them from seed, in almost any, well-drained soil - they even cope with poor or impoverished soils. Position them in full sun in an open, exposed area where the plants can literally grow wild. You can grow them all year round in frost-free climates.
decorated with bright yellow. It is used mostly as a flowering bedding plant and as an ornamental pot plant. Plant in well-drained soil, enriched with compost in a sunny position. Twinspurs (Diascia barberae): A dainty little perennial plant originating from the Drakensberg mountain range. It produces numerous upright stems growing to 30cm tall. The tubular flowers are a rich salmon pink in colour. They grow best in full sun and look spectacular in rock gardens, especially tucked into joints and cracks between large rocks. Birds and insects Encouraging birds, bees and butterflies in your garden is a great way to nurture an environment that supports biodiversity. These creatures are crucial pollinators in our eco-system and every small haven created for them ensures a better future for our green and wild life. The way to attract these pretty creatures is to make sure your garden has a ready supply of what they love and need. And think variety: the bigger the variety in your garden, the more varied your inhabitants will be. This includes plants, rocks, nesting logs, water features and even rich soil. Boost your soil with nutrients (chat to the professionals at your local garden centre for advice on the best products to use). Happy soil + happy plants = happy garden visitors.
Bedding Besties For summer colour in abundance, Nemesia (Nemesia strumosa) and Twinspurs (Diascia integerrima) make the best of indigenous friends. Celebrate your garden this summer! World Diabetes Day
World Diabetes Day is marked every year on the 14 November and is the primary global awareness campaign focusing on diabetes mellitus.
What is Diabetes Mellitus? Diabetes Mellitus is an abnormally high blood glucose (sugar) level caused by the inability of the body to either produce or respond to insulin properly. Insulin is a hormone, which is necessary to carry glucose from the bloodstream into the body cells where it is used for energy. If there is too little insulin, the blood glucose level continues to rise, as glucose is not removed from the bloodstream. Risk factors for diabetes These include age, obesity, a family history of diabetes, physical inactivity, and impaired glucose tolerance. What are the symptoms of diabetes? • Constant thirst • Increased hunger • Urinating more than usual • Numbness or tingling in the fingertips and toes • Unexplained weight loss • Blurred vision & other visual disturbances

End-of-Year Fatigue: Prepare for “Silly Season” Whether you are the CEO of a company or your household (or both!), we all live life to the fullest and try to fit in as much as possible during the year. At Umhlanga General & Aesthetic Practice, one of the most common complaints from patients is tiredness - and this escalates during November and the lead-up to the festive season. A lack of energy and motivation, as well as physical and mental exhaustion, has a huge negative impact on work and relationships.
• Physiological: Pregnancy, breast-feeding, inadequate sleep and excessive exercise could also be a reason why you are chronically tired.
Your GP is there to determine and treat the cause of this and set your mind at ease. Taking a sleep history, doing a full examination and sending you for urine or blood tests are all part of the work-up for chronic tiredness.
Prepare for the silly season and avoid fatigue by taking the following steps: • Don’t stay up too late. • Don’t have too much caffeine, alcohol or nicotine. • Don’t eat too much junk food. • Drink plenty of water. • Set realistic expectations for your workload and schedule. • Take time to relax. • Resolve relationship issues.
Common causes of chronic tiredness:
Visit your doctor to exclude possible causes of chronic tiredness and stop worrying! By Dr Desere Ferreira, www.umhlangagp.net.
• Psychological and psychosocial: Chronic tiredness can be caused by stress, anxiety, and depression - as well as the medication you are taking for these conditions (you should review all your current medication with every check-up).
Umhlanga General and Aesthetic Practitioners
• Physical: Conditions like anaemia, diabetes, glandular fever, cancer, obesity, obstructive sleep apnoea, iron deficiency, constipation, heart failure and thyroid disease can all be a possible cause of chronic tiredness.

Achieve Inner Freedom through Journey Therapy What is the secret to staying calm and positive amidst the chaos and challenges we face? It is simply the ability to manage your emotions effectively so that you can achieve balance and harmony in all areas of your life. Journey therapy allows the body to facilitate healing and release at a cellular level, dealing with past trauma and depression, resulting in inner transformation and emotional wellbeing. The Journey is a therapeutic process, a closed eye visualisation, which assists one to gain access to stored or repressed memories of painful past experiences. These cell memories drive our behaviour, actions, and

belief systems that are often played out unconsciously. The journey process is facilitated by accessing the repressed memories, emptying out and expressing the stored pain, thereby allowing forgiveness to take place. This then enables the body to go about the process of healing naturally thus resulting in inner freedom, peace and calmness. The Journey has been proven to be highly effective, and rapidly gets to the root cause of depression, trauma, anxiety, and bereavement. It is an excellent and safe way to maintain emotional health and well-being

holistically, without the use of harmful drugs or invasive treatments. Journey therapy is also suitable for children from the age of five upwards. Farah Manjoo is an Internationally Accredited Journey Practitioner and is recommended worldwide. She has found the inner freedom and calmness in her life due to the phenomenal tools of The Journey Therapy. DIY teacher’s appreciation gift
The school year is nearly finished, and many kids will want to give their teacher a gift at the end of the year. What could be more personal than a handmade gift they can use at home? Here is an awesome gift idea that you can make for your favourite teacher to show them your appreciation. What you will need: • Plant of your choice • Plastic plant pot and saucer. Choose the correct size for your chosen plant to fit into. • Self-adhesive chalk board labels • Chalk or chalkboard pen • Craft glue • Tape measure • Creative craft embellishments • Newspaper • Potting soil Here’s how to make it: Lay out newspapers over a table or surface where you’ll be working so you don’t get anything dirty. Put craft glue around the rim circumference of your plastic pot and stick the tape measure around the rim. Cut off excess tape.
Exclusive Baby Care & Pre-School
Next, stick a self-adhesive chalk board label in the middle of one side of the pot.
Enrolments Open
Decorate the rest of the pot with your chosen craft embellishments. Write your message on your chalk board label, using chalk or chalkboard pen. We chose to write “Thank you for helping me grow”, as a special message for a teacher. Plant your flower in your pot. Fill a quarter to half way with potting soil and place your plant into the pot. Top up with some more potting soil. Water well. Your gift is now ready to give to your teacher. Glowing Magic Milk Science Experiment
Supplies: • Milk • Fluorescent paint or fluorescent watercolours • Squeezy bottles (eye droppers or pipettes may be substituted) • Dish soap • Cotton bud, toothpick or craft stick • Black light Directions: Fill a container/bowl with just enough milk to cover the bottom. Fill the squeezy bottles with fluorescent watercolours or with watered-down florescent paint. The traditional experiment is done with food colouring, so you want that consistency.
Instruct kids to squirt paint around the perimeter of the container. Dab a cotton bud in dish soap and touch the centre of the container with the cotton bud. The colours immediately jump away from the cotton bud.
For a short while the colours almost disappear, then they slowly creep back to the centre of the container. It is so cool to watch! You can also do this with food colouring instead of fluorescent paint, and then you don’t need the black light.
According to www.thoughtco. com, “When you introduce detergent to the milk, several things happen at once. The detergent lowers the surface tension of the liquid so that the food colouring is free to flow throughout the milk. The detergent reacts with the protein in the milk, altering the shape of those molecules and setting them in motion. The reaction between the detergent and the fat forms micelles, which is how detergent helps to lift grease off of dirty dishes. As the micelles form, the pigments in the food colouring get pushed around.” Source: www. learnplayimagine.com.

Hygiene in Indoor Play Areas Under the Spotlight Play areas in shopping centres and restaurants are usually considered to be convenient solutions for parents who need to keep their children occupied and entertained. Most restaurants have security measures like cameras, safety tags, child minders and a signin system, to make sure little ones remain safe. But do they consider the unseen dangers such as exposure to bacteria and viruses that may be lurking? These recreational areas are the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and if not properly cleaned on a regular basis, can be hazardous to public health and safety. Over the last few months there have been various reports of measles outbreaks and the H1N1 virus affecting 3 children at the same school in Pietermaritzburg. Industroclean Managing Director, Emma Corder urges all establishments and institutions with play areas to maintain a strict cleaning regime to reduce exposure to possible infections. “Retailers, restaurants and
schools need to take hygiene and cleanliness very seriously,” she says. “While it is impossible to eliminate all risks of infection, you are able to at least minimise them by routinely sanitising, cleaning and disinfecting all areas.”
“These recreational areas are the perfect breeding ground for bacteria...” Over a busy period, such as weekends or holidays, a play area could host more than 100 children in one day. Corder says that it is important to clean and sanitise daily, while spot cleaning several times a day. “Remember, these play areas accommodate children from about 18 months to about 8 years old, so they’re at different developmental stages, which means that the playroom is
subjected to a wide range of germs. Managers should make sure that these areas are shutdown to do a full clean up to prevent the spread of contagious diseases.”
Cleaning experts advise that all playground equipment be pressure washed at least once quarterly, to get rid of grime that builds up, especially on equipment like swings and monkey bars. All play areas should have mopping units, cloths, window cleaning equipment and vacuums at hand to ensure hygienic spaces for children to play in. “These areas should also have wipes available, not only to wipe down surfaces, but also for staff and children to use for their hands”. Corder insists that any entity that wishes to provide the public with a play area should fully commit to keeping this space hygienic at all times. “A clean and safe playing area is a non-negotiable. If you’re providing a recreational space, make sure that your staff can effectively carry out the necessary cleaning routines to keep germs at bay,” Corder concludes.
