Editor’s Life
Happy Spring! And just like that we are heading towards the summer – the evenings will get longer and the days will get warmer – I might get home in the daylight hours again…! And with the warmer weather will come some more family Arthur camping trips! I am really hoping to go to the White Mountain Festival with my family this year, now that we are eager campers. I’ve never been so it will be another first on our South African bucket list! We have an amazing competition to win tickets to this festival again this year so enter now to be in with a chance to WIN! As I write this, we are on the final countdown to the ‘12th Annual Mum’s Mail “Fantasea” High Tea’. The event on Friday 1 September at Greyville Racecourse, is set to be another huge success – let’s hope we can beat last year’s fundraising total of R215 000! I’d like to say a HUGE ‘Thank You’ to everyone who has made this event possible, from all of our sponsors – small and large, to the fundraising team, including Alice Leah of The A List and Steph Berry of The Sunflower Fund, the Mum’s Mail Team and the many volunteers who generously give of their time to help such an amazing charity! And here is another charity drive that we are excited to be a part of… Donate your pre-loved bras and help young ladies in need! The A-List is asking women to donate clean, gently used or new bras to help young ladies in 41 selected children’s homes. You can drop off the bras at the Mum’s Mail office at 2 Romsey Grove, Durban North – or at selected drop off points around the greater eThekwini area. Donations will be accepted throughout the month of September. For more information contact Alice Leah: 082 577 2110, alice@ thealist.co.za.

Don’t Marry into Debt
Attorneys & Mediators Negotiation Coach
Have you checked the credit record of the person you are planning to marry? This question would shock most young spousesto-be. Not so, with older and wiser folk. I know some lady lawyers who advise their clients never to go on a date with a man before checking his financials! When the ceremony is over, when the wedding dress is back in the cupboard and the celebration just a memory, you will learn that marriage is a financial relationship. It can be a disastrous one, or a profitable one. This can depend as much on the way you are married, as upon the fortunes of the spouses – your success or failure in your careers, your investments or your businesses. In South Africa, if you marry without the proper legal advice, you could find yourself deep in debt, from day one of the marriage. If you marry without going to the trouble and expense of having an ante nuptial contract, you marry not only your beloved, but also the debt that he or she may have accrued before the two of you met.

Without a marriage contract (or ante nuptial contract – a ‘pre-nup’ as the Americans call it), you automatically marry in community of property. That means you both share everything – all assets and all liabilities, including those that exist at the time of the marriage and those that may occur during the course of the marriage. There are many other good reasons to have a marriage contract, but there is no space to list them here. You must seek sound legal advice long before the wedding day. World Rabies Day
Change your dog’s diet and you will change their life
World Rabies Day is the first and only global day of action and awareness for rabies prevention. It is an opportunity to unite as a community and for individuals, NGOs and governments to connect and share their work. Created and coordinated annually by GARC, World Rabies Day on 28 September focuses on rabies endemic countries, to increase community awareness of the disease and its prevention. World Rabies Day also raises the profile of national and local control programmes and acts as a springboard for year-round capacity building and awareness. Rabies: Zero by 30 At the global conference on rabies elimination in 2015, a common goal of zero human deaths from canine rabies by 2030 was agreed by the World Health Organization, World Organisation for Animal Health, UN Food and Agriculture Organization and GARC. In support of this goal, the 2017 World Rabies Day theme is Rabies: Zero by 30. It’s up to all of us now to make elimination a reality. World Rabies Day is an opportunity to play your part and bring an end to the unnecessary suffering and death caused by rabies.

Empower your Domestic Staff to be Safe
A local private security company has urged home owners to make sure anyone who works on their property know the basic principles of personal safety, so that they are familiar with how to act in an emergency.
Domestic workers, says Fidelity ADT’s KwaZulu-Natal district manager Ivan Govender, play an integral part in any home security system and it is critical that they are empowered and equipped to look after their own safety, as well as the safety of anyone else on the property. He urges domestic workers to ask themselves: what would you do if someone tried to break into the house that you are working at? Do you know where the panic buttons are, and how to call for help? If not, discuss it with your employer. Govender says home owners should consider enrolling employees in local crime-prevention forums which take place in most neighbourhoods every month. These are often arranged by the
SAPS or community members and teach valuable crime-prevention and safety tips. Lastly, Govender believes there are five key things to remember: • Be careful of having unguarded conversations about your employer or the property you are working at. You never know who might be listening. • Be observant and speak up if you see something suspicious. • Use the camera on your cell phone. If you see something or someone that appears to be out of place, take a photo. • Don’t let your phone be a distraction. Pay attention to your surroundings. • Never allow anyone onto the property or indoors unless they have an appointment. If you have any doubt about someone trying to gain entry, call your employer or call the police. Visit www.adt.co.za.

Swimming Pool Tips
Specialists in Resurfacing & Renovating Swimming Pools.
First time swimming pool owners often get a fright when they realise they have to actually maintain their swimming pool to keep it blue!
New Pools Repairs & Renovations Maintenance, Servicing & Cleaning Suppliers of Pool Cleaning Equipment Solutions for any Budget
This can be daunting for some, but in fact, owning and maintaining a swimming pool is very easy. It’s all about getting into a routine. Put aside 15 minutes once a week to service your pool. Service a pool in four easy steps: Test your pool water, clear all the leaf baskets, backwash the filter and then dose the pool with the necessary chemicals. Most test kits come with a comprehensive guide on how to test the water and how much (and what) chemical to dose your pool with.
Contact: Jason Sanders | NSPI - Builder & Retail Member 031 569 2092 | 8E Glen Anil Street | Glen Anil | Durban North
www.blupool.co.za Shop and buy your chemicals online and have them delivered to you door.
If your pool has a leaf problem then you must ensure the leaves are scooped out of the pool and the leaf baskets are cleared regularly. Failure to do this will result in the baskets getting clogged. When this happens, there is no circulation in the pool for distribution of chemicals, and there is no filtration of pool water. Your options here are to get extra leaf-trapping devices like a Pool Skim, or cut back the trees that are most problematic. Ensure that you run your swimming pool motor every day. Smaller size swimming pool pumps may need to run for longer periods of time. New technology has brought us variable speed drive (VSD) pumps which consume very little electricity and also filter water far more effectively. Ask your local pool shop about these new energy efficient pumps. They are used extensively in commercial applications (gyms and school pools) and will soon be the standard requirements for all domestic swimming pools. Defy Hand Blender Set This July DEFY is showcasing a multifunctional blender set. The highquality stainless-steel blender, whisk and fourfold stainlesssteel blade will create endless possibilities for you in the kitchen. Switch between a variety of speed settings, including a turbo function by selecting your desired speed. The DEFY blender set is perfect for whipping up a quick, easy and delicious breakfast. I was recently sent one of these blender sets to review. I must say I love having it in my kitchen – it’s small and easy to store, as well as easy to clean. The blending attachment is great and it can blend anything from soups to smoothies (the two things I most use it for). The whisk attachment is something I have wanted for a while and it is just SO much easier than hauling out my old electric blender. We’ve
used it at home to make cupcakes and I’ve also used it to whip up my cheese sauce and mashed potatoes – it comes out so smooth and creamy! It is also great for whipping cream and beating eggs or egg whites for meringue. Now, the chopping attachment is my favourite! You just put your ingredients in the chopping bowl, attach the chopping blades with lid and whizz away – voila you have finely chopped herbs, or nuts or onions – whatever you need! I really enjoyed this feature as I hate chopping food and am usually in a hurry so this made it super easy and quick. Visit www.defy.co.za for more info. Review by Sarah Mackintosh. Low Iron May Be Linked To ‘Exhaustion Epidemic’ Iron deficiency may be one of the reasons behind an ‘exhaustion epidemic’ in which up to four out of five women complain of extreme tiredness, according to reports. And, chronic tiredness has become such a common complaint that doctors in the UK have named the condition TATT – Tired All The Time Syndrome. Chronic tiredness manifests in poor concentration, constant exhaustion and difficulty in making decisions. SA health and wellness expert, Vanessa Ascencao, says women are most at risk of iron deficiency, especially when pregnant, those with a heavier menstruation cycle or Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), athletes and vegetarians. Ascencao says iron absorption from conventional tablets is low and many iron supplements result in unpleasant side effects, including constipation and nausea. Spatone, a 100% natural mineral water sourced from ancient springs in Wales and consumed by millions around the world, has a significantly higher absorption rate
than conventional iron tablets and has substantially less side effects. “During my pregnancy, I researched iron supplements extensively and found Spatone to be the best. It’s gentle on the body and an effortless way to take iron,” said Ascencao. Spatone is a 100% natural liquid iron supplement clinically proven to have an absorption rate of up to 40% with no uncomfortable side effects. Spatone is available at leading health stores, pharmacies and Dis-Chem. It is suitable for vegetarians, vegans and is safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. For more information, visit Facebook (Spatone SA), www.coynehealthcare. co.za or contact info@coynehealthcare. co.za or 021 – 421 9144. A Long Walk in the Garden: Living with Rett Syndrome
‘A Long Walk in the Garden – Living with Rett Syndrome’ is written by Cindy Fourie about her family’s journey with their daughter, Mikayla, aged 21. Mikayla has a rare condition called Rett Syndrome. Rett Syndrome is a rare, severe neurological disorder that affects mostly girls. It’s usually discovered in the first two years of life. Symptoms include impaired brain growth and usually don’t improve over time. It’s a lifelong condition. Often, the symptoms worsen very slowly, or don’t change. It’s rare for people with Rett Syndrome to be able to live independently.

Dr Des@Home: Cervical Cancer Awareness
Mothers, sisters, daughters - every woman is at risk for cervical cancer. Everybody is keen to do tests to prevent cancer, but only a few women go for their yearly pap smear. Did you know that roughly eight women in South Africa die from the disease every day? It is usually slow-progressing without the obvious symptoms like pain and bleeding after intercourse. A pap smear is a simple procedure where a sample of cervical cells are taken by your gynaecologist or GP and sent off to the Lab to check for irregularities under a microscope. These precancerous cells are referred to as dysplasia, which is 100% treatable. HPV (human papillomavirus) is the most common STD and the cause for more than 90% of cases of cervical cancer. There are many different types: some may cause warts and may lead to cancer, whilst others cause no problems at all and go undetected for many years.
Dr Deseré Ferreira Spring Special: Botox 15% DiScount
Today, most women diagnosed with cervical cancer have failed to have regular pap smears or have not followed up after an abnormal smear. This is why it’s crucial for all women to have annual smears as soon as they become sexually active. Gardasil and Cervarix are both vaccinations given as a two-dose course to preferably 11 to 12 y olds (while the immune system still gives a proper response to it). Not one of them covers all the HPV strains, but any protection that you can give your children has value! The vaccinations can be given to older girls too, as well as adults with positive smears. Be aware! Book your pap smear today - it can save your life! By Dr Deseré Ferreira, 031 – 582 5301. www.mumsmail.com

Five Tips for a Healthy Spine
Back Week will be observed from 2 to 6 September and below are some tips to help you maintain a healthy spine. Get moving Regular exercise such as walking, swimming and Pilates are low-impact activities that are great for the health of your spine. Maintain a good posture at your desk Proper office ergonomics can help your muscles and joints stay comfortable at work. An incorrect desk setup can cause you to hunch over your computer and cause aches and pains. Ditch the sling bag Back pain doesn’t just affect adults, but children as well. A major cause is the heavy bags they carry with them at school. Avoid using single shoulder sling bags and rather opt for a good quality rucksack with double shoulder support. Quit smoking Lighting up doesn’t just hurt your lungs, it can hurt your back as well. Nicotine causes the small blood vessels to constrict and can reduce the delivery of blood to the bones and soft tissue in your spine. Manage your stress levels Lack of sleep and increased stress levels can alter the way our brain perceives and interprets pain. It is recommended that adults aim to achieve between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Yoga is a great way to de-stress as it involves deep breathing techniques and can also help maintain your strength and flexibility.

The Link Between Oral Health and Disease
There is a significant relationship between a person’s oral health and overall health. It is therefore pivotal to give your mouth the attention that it deserves in order to ensure a good health. The mouth is known as the dirtiest part of the human body and this is largely due to it being the entry-point for many bacteria. In order to keep the bacteria from spreading through your body, proper oral hygiene through brushing, flossing and mouth rinsing is essential.
medication use. • Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. • Floss daily to help remove plaque • Visit your dentist regularly for a checkup and professional cleaning to help prevent any problems and detect possible problems in their early stages. The mouth is often the location used to diagnose a variety of diseases. • Eat a well-balanced diet, which will help you maintain a healthier immune system, help prevent heart disease and slow diabetes disease progression. • If you smoke, talk to your dentist about options for quitting.
The Family Dental Care Group (FDCG) strives to educate the public about the role oral health plays in some systemic diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease, and oral health complications during pregnancy.
“A clean mouth will lead to a clean body,” says Dr Dineshen Govender (Principal Dentist at Family Dental Care). “Although you clean your mouth every day at home, regular checkups at the dentist will prevent additional disease that can likely make you To keep your teeth, gums and body sick.” healthy, FDCG recommends the following: • Provide your dentist with a complete Visit www.familydentalcare.co.za for an health history, including any illnesses and appointment or for more information.

Medical Grade versus Over the Counter Products
It is often questioned whether or not medical skin care products (cosmeceuticals) are better than over-the-counter products (cosmetic products). The difference between the two are – medical skin care products are prescribed and dispensed by doctors, whereas over the counter products are available in pharmacies, department stores and salons. There are three reasons why there is a remarkable difference between the two: Usage of active ingredients Active ingredients are formulated to address particular conditions, but with overthe-counter products being formulated for everyone, the use of active ingredients in these products is very limited by law. This includes the number of ingredients used, the grade or quality of the ingredients, as well as the concentrations or dosages. Generally, the active ingredients in medical products are much higher – both the number of active ingredients used, as well as the concentrations thereof.
Penetration into the skin Secondly, with limited active ingredients, less sophisticated delivery systems and lesser concentrations of actives, the over the counter products may not penetrate as deeply into the skin, thus the difference in the results seen. The active ingredients are formulated to reach the deeper layers of the dermis. It is at this level of the skin where collagen is restored, elastin is affected and the causes of skin ageing are addressed. Scientific backup Over-the-counter products often claim to deliver certain results on the pretty packaging and expensive advertising campaigns. It is, however, scientifically proven that medical products actually give results and improve the skin, and their claims can be backed up with clinical data. Buff has been appointed Essie’s first and only flagship salon in South Africa - check out the imported Essie manicure stations from Italy that come with a handbag hook and built-in extractor system to combat the dust and strong odours associated with acrylic and gel nails.
They will tailor make your party to suit your needs.
The Soda Fountain is a retro, American diner-style area that serves old fashioned soft drinks and handcrafted gourmet donuts from cult local brand, Wicked Donuts. There is also a Brow Bar and makeup station; while the soft, salmon-hued Glow is a dedicated area where tweens and teens can experiment with appropriate skin care products. Men have The Workshop where they can explore grooming in an environment specifically created to make them feel at ease.

I was lucky enough to be invited there last week with my daughter and her friend and they were both blown away by the salon and the friendly staff. My daughter is 12 years old so is a bit ‘too cool’ for this type of thing, or so she thought! She couldn’t stop raving about it and the girls are even talking about inviting their friends there for their next birthday celebrations – this boutique salon is like none other you have ever been to, so a visit is a definite must! I had a wonderfully relaxing gel pedicure and the girls had manicures and pedicures, incorporating foot scrubs and massages and topped off with a bottle of traditional lemonade and a Wicked Donut of their choice. What a wonderful way to spend a Saturday morning… Contact: 087 287 9878, hello@buffparlour.co.za, www.buffparlour.co.za. Feel Well with Hot Stone Therapy
Feel rejuvenated after a hot stone massage - an age-old technique derived by the Greeks, but nowadays largely used in the modern world as a popular stress reliever. What are the benefits of hot stone therapy and how has it evolved since the beginning of time? Victoria Sutcliffe, Spa Manager of The Heavenly Spa at The Westin Cape Town says there are many advantages. And as the personal and professional demands of people around the globe increase daily, a hot stone massage is “the perfect way to unwind and de-stress”. The benefits: • Muscle relaxation • Pain relief • Blood circulation. The heat of the stones relaxes the muscles and allows the therapist to manipulate the deep tissue effectively. The temperature of the stones, during upward massage movement will also increase blood flow and help to oxygenate the blood and nutrients levels in the body. The stones: Sutcliffe says not just any stone will do, instead, it takes a special type of volcanic rock to retain heat throughout the massage therapy and deliver the desired outcome during treatment. She suggests: • Basalts lava stones - comprises high silica and iron content ideal for hot stone therapy. Helps with stress relief: • Calms the body and detoxes from lactic acid. Hot stone therapy promotes relaxation by opening up the energy pathways; it helps to release tension from those affected muscles, which is an excellent stress reliever. Top spots to target: Targeting the right spots is necessary during a massage and Sutcliffe says it’s the key to a “fulfilling treatment”. She recommends these spots: • On the hands and between the toes • On the back, specifically around the spine • On the abdomen. Beneficial Acids in Skin Peels and Skin Products: Part 2
Let’s have a look at a few other wellknown and not so well-known acids. Phytic and Shikimic acids have been quite popular in skin care – they address hyperpigmentation, as they both have whitening and brightening effects. Phytic acid is a unique substance found in plant seeds such as bran, cereal and fruit. It is also known as phytate and works by blocking the entrance of iron and copper in the formation of melanin or pigment. Phytic acid is also a powerful antioxidant and helps reduce inflammation in the skin often associated with hyper-pigmentation. Shikimic acid is derived from star anise and has tyrosinase inhibiting properties which blocks pigment production.
as enhances intercellular communication. Retinol is a fat-soluble vitamin and can be found in animal sources such as liver, kidney, eggs and dairy products. In skin care, retinoic acid peels have deep cleansing, anti-inflammatory effects as well as improves skin texture, tone and luminosity. Indications for retinol treatment include skin ageing, sun-damaged skin, deep lines and wrinkles, acne and irregular pigmentation. Beauty and Makeup Tips Dry Lips: this is normal during our dryer months, but not if you follow these two steps: • Add a little bit of sugar with a pea size amount of tooth paste on your toothbrush and gently rub your lips in a circular motion; this helps to exfoliate your lips, getting rid of all the dry dead skin, leaving you with super soft kissable lips. • Always moisturise your lips with a lip balm or Vaseline before applying lipstick (the trick here is not to apply a lot but just enough). Foundation: during dry months it is best to use a creamy foundation so your skin does not look and feel tight or dry - creamy foundations help to moisturize the skin (if you have oily skin, use a water-based foundation instead). • Remember to exfoliate your skin once or twice a week to get rid of all the dead skin cells so your foundation does not look flaky.
Sunscreen: always wear a sunscreen or a moisturiser with an SPF of at least 15. • Use a non-greasy sunscreen under your foundation; if you find it to be to greasy then try using a BB cream which has a sunscreen. A tinted moisturiser also gives you coverage and has anti-ageing properties (perfect for the lady on the go who just doesn’t have time for a full foundation and moisturiser application). Makeup Removal: NEVER ever go to bed with makeup on, no matter how tired you are. • I use coconut oil to remove my makeup, then a makeup wipe to remove the residue. This works wonders in removing makeup, especially mascara! By Claudette Lingerfelder, Beauty Beyond By Claudette, www.beautybeyondkzn.com.

Schools around the country stand a chance to win big prizes in Plastics SA’s annual schools competition entitled “Let’s do it … Let’s Clean-Up South Africa!” According to Douw Steyn, Director of Sustainability at Plastics SA, the aim of this national competition is to educate and encourage schools, communities, businesses and organisations to play their part in cleaning up their immediate surroundings. “We have been running this national competition for the past 10 years as part of our annual Clean-up and Recycle SA activities. During this time, we have given away prizes to deserving schools for hosting various cleanup activities and being committed recyclers of their waste,” Steyn says. The competition is open to primary and high schools, as well as businesses or organisations around the country that are eager to initiate a clean-up and/or recycling activity in their area. By writing a short report about their clean-up and recycling, and sending in the photographs and information of what they had managed to accomplish, they stand a chance to win one of the following exciting prizes: Primary School: 1st prize: R5 000, 2nd prize: R2 000, 3rd prize: R1 000. High School: 1st prize: R5 000, 2nd prize: R2 000, 3rd prize: R1 000. School - Primary & High: 1st prize: 6-seater picnic table, 2nd prize: Garden Bench, 3rd prize: Plastic recycle bin. Business/Organisation: 1st prize: 6-seater picnic table, 2nd prize: Garden Bench, 3rd prize: Plastic recycle bin. The closing date for entries is 31 October 2017. Entry forms and competition rules can be downloaded from www. cleanupandrecycle.co.za/competition. Entries will be judged during the first week of November and the winners will be announced shortly thereafter. Diet Coke and Mentos Eruption
One of the most popular experiments of modern times is the Diet Coke and Mentos Geyser. This experiment is loads of fun and sure to amaze your friends and family. What you’ll need: • Large bottle of Diet Coke • About half a pack of Mentos • Geyser tube (optional but makes things much easier) Instructions: • Make sure you are doing this experiment in a place where you won’t get in trouble for getting Diet Coke everywhere. Outside on some grass is perfect; please don’t try this one in your family lounge!! • Stand the Diet Coke upright and unscrew the lid. Put some sort of funnel or tube on top of it so you can drop the Mentos in at the same time (about half the pack is a good amount). • Time for the fun part - drop the Mentos into the Diet Coke and run like mad! If you’ve done it properly a huge geyser of Diet Coke should come flying out of the bottle, it’s a very impressive sight. The record is about 9 metres high!

What’s happening? Although there are a few different theories about how this experiment works, the most favoured reason is because of the combination of carbon dioxide in the Diet Coke and the little dimples found on Mentos candy pieces, which dramatically increases the surface area and allows a huge amount of bubbles to form. Galaxy Cakes Ingredients • 100g dark chocolate, chopped • 125g butter, at room temperature • 1 cup caster sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 cup self-raising flour • 50g plain flour • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder • 2 eggs • 2 x 330g pkts store-bought royal icing • Purple, blue, pink and black food colouring, to tint • Edible glitter or silver shimmer dust, to decorate Method Preheat the oven to 160°C. Line twelve muffin pans with paper cases. Place chocolate, butter, sugar, vanilla and 160ml (2/3 cup) water in a saucepan. Stir over medium-low heat for 5 minutes or until smooth. Set aside at room temperature to cool. Sieve the flours and cocoa into a large
bowl. Whisk eggs into the cooled chocolate mixture. Whisk flour mixture into chocolate mixture. Spoon into prepared cases. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the centre of a cupcake comes out clean. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. To make the icing, prepare royal icing following packet directions. Place half of the icing in a medium bowl and tint with black food colouring, stirring well to combine. Divide remaining icing among 4 small bowls. Tint with purple, blue and pink food colourings, leaving one portion white. Dollop all four colours into the black icing and swirl gently with a skewer. Dip the top of each cupcake into the icing to coat, allowing the excess to drip back into the bowl. Return the cupcakes to the wire rack. Sprinkle with glitter or dust. Set aside for 20 minutes to allow the icing to set. Source: www.taste.com.au.
