Healthy Carrot and Bran Muffins Last month we published an article from Pheka on the importance of healthy eating. Here is their recipe for delicious and healthy muffins, as promised! Ingredients: • 1½ cups cake flour • 2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda • ½ cup grated coconut • Pinch salt • ½ cup brown sugar • 1 cup wheat bran/digestive bran • ½ cup raisins or chopped dates • 2 teaspoons cinnamon powder • 1 cup low fat yoghurt/buttermilk • ½ cup sunflower/canola oil • 1 egg • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence • 1½ cups grated and peeled carrots (about 4 carrots) • Small handful or ¼ cup of chopped pecan nuts (can be left out)

Method: • Turn the oven on to 180˚C and place the shelf in the middle. • Mix the flour, bicarb, salt, sugar, cinnamon, raisins, coconut, chopped nuts and bran in a big mixing bowl. • In a jug mix together the oil, egg and yoghurt/buttermilk and vanilla essence. • Peel and grate the carrots – you need 1½ cups – if watery, squeeze out the water. • Add the wet mix to the flour mix and gently stir together. • Spray a muffin tray with Spray and Cook. • Spoon the mixture into the muffin tray – not too full! • Bake at 180˚C for about 20 to 25 minutes – until a fork comes out clean. Makes 12 muffins.

Prizes and Goodie Bag Items Needed

Westville

Mum’s Mail is in the process of planning its 10th annual high tea in association with The Sunflower Fund and is appealing for goodie bag items for 800 ladies, a surprise envelope or lucky draw/raffle prize. The fundraising high tea is planned for Friday 28 August at Greyville Racecourse and is sold out! The event aims to raise money for The Sunflower Fund whose sole purpose is to pay for the tissue typing of potential bone marrow stem cell donors for inclusion on The South African Bone Marrow Registry. The more donors on the registry, the more hope leukaemia patients have of finding their 1:100 000 lifesaving donor match. There are 800 ladies attending and organisers need sponsors for the following (all sponsors’ details will be included in the event programme that each lady will receive): 800 goodie bag items: each lady will receive an exciting goodie bag which helps to build the continued success of the event. No flyers/pamphlets please – printed material like discount vouchers can be included in the printed programme at a nominal cost (please ask for a quote). Surprise envelopes: this is a big part of the fundraising efforts for the event. The details of the sponsored prizes are placed in envelopes and guests buy the ‘envelope’ for an amount significantly lower than the value of the sponsored prize. Lucky draw or raffle prizes: this is also a large part of the fundraising efforts for the event as tickets are sold for various amazing raffle packages and spot prizes are given away. If you are able to assist contact Alice Leah on 031 – 573 1731 (ext 5) or e-mail editor@mumsmail.com. www.mumsmail.com

Friend or Foe? For most, the thought of being friends with a funeral director is a daunting one and frankly just too much. After all, funeral directors are creepy and only come out at night dressed in black with gaunt faces and hunched backs!

Special occasions with a touch of elegance • Baby showers & Bridal showers • Corporate parties • Product launches • Birthdays and more Sophisticated high teas at your chosen venue.

Surprise special offers when you mention "mum's mail" in your enquiry. 084 559 9411 Facebook: ‘high tea tie tea’ highteatietea@gmail.com

In Old Testament times they were often classified as unclean – not dissimilar to lepers. Who wants to be reminded that we are, after all, mortal? As a career funeral director, I invite you to consider some alternative views. They are fully human and face the same challenges as everybody else. For the most part, they see themselves as privileged and called to render a vital service for what is possibly the most difficult challenge any human being might face. They are often light-hearted and caring and continually go the extra mile with a smile. They appreciate life and the giver of eternal life, knowing full well that they might be next.

Apart from the full spectrum of funeral services, funeral directors can also assist with arranging flowers, press notices, the minister, the organist, the venue, refreshments, the death certificate and much more. They also look after those in grief by being a friend and a shoulder to cry on and have the responsibility of caring for the dead in a dignified manner. All that’s left for you now to do is to decide, Funeral Director, friend or foe? By Dallas Gilbert.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR ID BOOK IS LOST OR STOLEN?

Report the loss at your local police station and obtain an incident number. Then call SAFPS on 0860 101 248 to report it. This is a free service and if anyone tries to open an account/get credit using your ID number/ID book, you will be called to verify if the person applying is you or not.

How to Help • I Care: Children on the streets can make up to R70 per day or even R300 over weekends through begging. A small amount of the money is spent on food; the rest is either stolen by the older children or used on drugs and alcohol, which in turn leads to drug addiction, crime, prostitution and gang involvement. I Care is a non-profit Christian organisation that creates sustainable solutions for these street children through awareness programmes, rehabilitation, shelters and skills/job creation and finally producing effective members of society. To volunteer or donate visit www.icare.co.za or call 0861 470 047. • The LEARN Project’s Fundraising Golf Day: Royal Durban Golf Club on 24 July from 10.30am. Don’t Miss the Delightful Family Musical: Snoopy! This utterly delightful mini-musical based on the beloved “Peanuts” comic strips is a funny, heart-warming family musical that will appeal to adults just as much as (if not even more than) children. Carol Trench makes a very welcome return to Durban’s stage as the bossy Lucy, with an all-star local cast playing the much-loved characters of Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Peppermint Patty, Woodstock and Linus. KickstArt’s own executive director, Steven Stead makes a rare stage appearance as the title character! The musical also stars Bryan Hiles, Caitlin Kilburn, Katy Moore, Graeme Wicks and Evashnee Pillay.

Snoopy runs at the Elizabeth Sneddon theatre from 6 to 23 August – Tuesday to Saturday at 7pm, Saturdays at 1pm and Sundays at 1.30pm. Tickets cost between R130 and R200 per person, with discounts for children under 12 and pensioners. No children under six years are allowed.

Snoopy is brought to Durban by the multiaward winning team that created Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Peter Pan, Shrek and Annie and is designed by Greg King, directed by Steven Stead, with musical direction by Justin Southey, choreography by Janine Bennewith and lighting by Tina le Roux.

Delicious Life

New Banting Range from Martinnaise Martinnaise has recently added some exciting new Banting products to its range. Banting Mayonnaise: conforms to the stringent requirements of the Banting eating plan. It is a starch free, sugar free, delicious tangy mayonnaise with no seed oils or preservatives. This product most closely resembles classic 52% oil content mayonnaise but it is Banting 101 at its tastiest and best! It is available in two flavours, Olive and Herb and classic Gourmet. Raw Organic Cacao Powder: organically grown right here in South Africa and processed cold with no additives, this product is Banting friendly. This cacao has not been roasted and therefore does not have the classic bitterness of conventional cocoa powder. It has a natural sweetness and makes for a lovely cup of hot chocolate! Raw Organic Xylitol: this locally grown product is sweeter than sugar, without that classic unpleasant after taste. While other xylitol products are made from corn or cane sugar, this product is organically extracted from the bark of the birch tree, giving it a uniquely pleasant flavour. It is available in crystal form (like sugar) or Raw Organic Xylitol Syrup, which is a great replacement for honey or any kind of syrup. Xylitol is a popular sugar replacement with people following low carb diets, such as the Banting diet, and with diabetics, as it has no impact on blood sugar levels. Martinnaise will be at the East Coast Radio House and Garden Show where these products will be available for tasting and purchase.

Coaching: A Journey of Self-Discovery and Goal-Orientated Direction Wouldn’t it be fabulous to have a mentor, manager, personal trainer, sports coach and cheerleader all supporting and guiding you to reach your goals? A personal coach takes on each of these roles to assist you in reaching your dreams. Through a carefully considered and guided process of questioning and reflection, three powerful goals are set. These are then worked on over a period of three months. A one-hour weekly coaching session provides direction, aids you to find your most effective and appropriate strategy to reach your goals and ensures accountability. The goals set, while self-directed and positive, are designed to be challenging and to take you out of your comfort zone – goals that get you equally excited and daunted! The advantage of professional coaching is benefiting from a well-researched system which taps into change management, behavioural science, psychology and studies of the working of the mind. For example, it has been proven that the thought process is disrupted by a high emotional state, so calming the emotional or limbic system can facilitate clear thinking. Coaching can teach you the tools to do this.

The Legal Aspects of Dying: A Compassionate Guide to Help You through the Process of a Loved One Dying.

Roger Knowles Attorneys

This book should be in every South African home. It is almost certain that each of us will have to follow up after the death of another person. It deals with every aspect of the legally required tasks following a death; from the moment death occurs to the winding up of the estate. The first four sections cover things that have to be done and the documents one has to supply while the fifth, and last section, tells us what we can do to save our children, or any other person who has to follow up after our own deaths, the trauma of having to find and/or order from third persons everything that is needed. The book is only 80 pages in length but it contains information on who to call, the two types of death and how they are handled, details on autopsies, burials and cremations, organ donations, dying outside of one’s country, what the executor and undertaker require and information on how to prepare for one’s own death. Vicky Ireland first thought of writing this book following her father’s death in 1982 when she felt utterly helpless as to what to do when a person dies. It only got published some 28 years later, but it has been well researched and is easy to read and follow. The Legal Aspects of Dying can be ordered in hard copy or digital format from www.legalaspectsofdying.co.za at a cost of R90.

Domestic Worker of the Month

COLLECTOR’S WORLD

Hirsch’s Homestores hold regular training sessions on appliance maintenance in each of their branches for domestic workers. They acknowledge these stalwarts in the home by holding a Domestic Worker Of The Month competition in every area in which they operate in South Africa. The monthly winners will each receive a Hirsch’s voucher and a certificate, and their names will go forward for the Domestic Worker of the Year competition, which includes a prize of R5 000 for the overall winner. “These training sessions are held to not only educate, but discuss the important job of being a home executive. Senior product consultant Patsy Peria from Unilever trains the ladies on how best to look after a home. Patsy goes through all the details from highend German machinery to how best to deal with those pesky stains,” said Hirsch’s Umhlanga PR and marketing officer, Ana Sotero.

Garden in a Box Reel Gardening is a brand new product in KZN. It is essentially a garden in a box – seeds coupled with fertiliser and spaced out on lengths of biodegradable paper. So you literally just plant the strip of paper and water it – it’s as easy as that! It’s a fantastic way to grow your own organic vegetables and herbs and it saves up to 80% water in the germination phase. It takes five minutes to plant and even kids can do it. It’s great for families, as well as schools and communities. • Organic and biodegradable. • Great value for money – boxes cost between R45 and R90. • Easy for young children. • It’s quick – five minutes to plant. • National and international award-winning idea that saves up to 80% of water throughout the whole germination phase. There are various boxes available, each with five varieties of seeds inside: • Mixed Salad Garden • Herb Garden • Soup Garden • Winter Vegetable Mix • Summer Vegetable Mix • Kids’ Veggie Starter • Salad Windowsill • Herb Windowsill Reel Gardening was developed in 2002 by Claire Catherine Reid at the age of 16 to solve the problems she encountered when starting her own vegetable garden. Claire was encouraged by her teachers to enter her then ‘newspaper and flour’ invention into the Eskom expo for young scientists. Claire won a gold medal at the national finals in Pretoria. Edible Gardening: Stewing Through July

Growers and suppliers of all turf varieties

One of the best things about Winter is the unapologetic decadence of the many stews we indulge in. We need some reward for enduring the cold weather, and a little extra padding can’t hurt either! Here are some ideal vegetables and herbs to grow for hearty Winter stews. Cauliflower Harvest your cauliflower with care, handling the head gently because it’s quite prone to bruising even though it feels compact and firm. If you’re not planning to eat your cauliflower immediately, harvesting it by cutting it off the main stem with a few outer leaves still around it will prolong its overall quality until you’re ready to feast. Cabbage Before harvesting your cabbage you should decide if you want them to re-grow next season or not. Leave the roots in the ground if you do and pull the whole plant out if you don’t. Harvest your cabbage when they feel solid or firm all the way through, but make sure you do it before they crack or split open. Rosemary As long as you’ve got rosemary growing, you can harvest it by stripping needles off the stem while it’s still on the plant and then chopping them up. A really neat trick for offseason times is to dry and then freeze your rosemary sprigs. Anytime you need some, just pull out a whole sprig, slide your finger down the stem, taking off as many needles as you need, and then pop the rest back in the freezer. How handy!

Healthy Life

Mental Illness Awareness Month July is Mental Illness Awareness Month – a time to reflect on mental health and give thought to how we can go about attaining it. The World Health Organisation defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” This definition focuses on the positive aspects of mental health. Our mental health is part of our overall health and enables us to cope effectively with our daily life, be productive and reach our full potential. It is, therefore, well worth looking after. 20% of children suffer with mental health complications. Parents play an important role in promoting their young ones’ mental health. There are several ways in which this can be done: Provide unconditional love: It is important that children are loved unconditionally. They need to know that whatever mistakes they make, however “naughty” they are, they will still be accepted wholeheartedly.

Discipline consistently and lovingly: Teach your children the difference between acceptable and unacceptable behaviour and be the perfect role model. The consequences for incorrect behaviour should be fair and consistent. Boost self-esteem: Children rely on adults to assist in developing positive self-esteem and confidence. A child that is always experiencing disapproval grows up believing they are unworthy. Look out for positive behaviour and praise them rather than only reprimanding. For every negative comment there should be five positive ones. Provide time for play: Children learn through play which contributes to both their physical and mental health. Setting aside time regularly to play with your child one-on-one, is a great bonding opportunity which increases their sense of worth and self-esteem. Kinesiology with Katja Correa

www.sanbs.org.za 0800 11 9031

Mention Kinesiology and you’re very likely to be met with the question “What’s that?” Well, very simply, Kinesiology is a gentle, non-invasive treatment incorporating the mental, emotional and physical systems of the body to identify areas of blockage to restore balance. Being exposed to stress such as crime, accidents, surgery, illness etc., our neurological reflexes become ‘scrambled’ and the body needs to be brought back into balance.

N.O.T. is another specialisation of Kinesiology which clears structural imbalances through a gentle, noninvasive treatment protocol and is effective for neck and back pain, headaches, scoliosis and other structural imbalances. Also a Neuro Trainer, Katja is able to find the emotional triggers for a specific problem that may cause symptoms of pain, anxiety, depression, sleeplessness, allergies etc., so it is addressed in a gentle way for a more balanced life. Kinesiology draws on techniques from many different modalities such as Chinese medicine, homeopathy, reflexology and Reiki to name a few and is complementary to orthodox medicine; working with it, not against it and is suitable for all ages.

Bleaching in Dentistry Bleaching is a wonderful addition to the scope of work dentists do for patients and it can literally change your smile in the space of two hours. Dr Paul Darby-Wade gets asked all the time if bleaching damages your teeth and the answer, pleasingly, is a resounding no! It is possible and more than likely that your teeth may become more sensitive, but if your teeth are healthy, the chances are very low. Most often the sensitivity will be due to receding of your gums or tooth loss around the ‘neck’ of the tooth. This should be looked at because it can indicate various other issues in your mouth, such as high levels of erosion due to excessive acidity. Loss of enamel and exposure of the root surface may also be found around sensitive teeth due to habits such as clenching or grinding which are often as a result of stress.

2. Laser bleaching which takes about an hour. 3. Probably the most effective is professional bleaching using systems such as Britesmile or the Zoom system which costs around R4 000 to R4 500 per session. This involves a gel which is placed on your teeth which is activated by a powerful light and the system takes about one and a half to two hours. Health, Diabetic and Banting… To Go Judy Brazier is passionate about helping others reach their goals, especially if they are hindered by health issues. Through networking she has linked with two friends who have their own businesses. ‘Health, Diabetic and Banting… to Go’ can offer you an ‘altogether package’. If you are diabetic, Banting, or just enjoy healthy food without sugar and harmful preservatives, then they have something for you. A breakfast muesli to start the day, a variety of nuts, seeds and delicious nibbles, roasted coconut snacks and biltong for ‘in-betweeners’ are available. Sugar substitutes, mayonnaises, salad dressings and biltong are also homemade to perfection. Prepared meals can be ordered for a month and delivered! A range of the finest artisan ice-cream will get the taste buds tingling! Jacqui Wilkes and her husband, John, needed to lose weight. In just nine months John has lost 32kg, and Jacqui 20kg. They followed a Banting eating plan and from this, a business began, Banting Best, as friends requested that Jacqui prepare meals for them too. As a professional chef and icecream lover, Paula Woodhouse started a home-based business, Paula Woodhouse’s Finest Artisan Ice Cream. Paula’s ice-cream is Banting and diabetic friendly, using xylitol and erythritol as the sugar substitute. She has developed some magnificent flavour combinations. If you are a health conscious ice-cream lover, this delicious range is for you!

Common Viral Infections in Childhood Common infections in childhood are viral warts and molluscum contagiosum, among others. Viral warts occur anywhere on the body. The lesions are raised and have a rough surface. They may be single or multiple and tend to bleed when traumatised. Molluscum contagiosum lesions are dome shaped and translucent with a central indentation. They vary in size and are extremely contagious. They occur anywhere on the body. Treatment: Topical products: These consist of salicylic acid/lactic acid. They irritate and dry the lesion and stimulate the immune system to mount an immune response against the infected area. Cryotherapy: Works by freezing the affected area with liquid nitrogen at repeated intervals. The cold temperature kills the virus and creates a blister with the virus on its surface. Once the blister ruptures, the virus is eliminated. Electrocautery/curettage: This works by burning the lesion, followed by scraping off the virus. Immunotherapy: This is a novel technique whereby candida antigen/BCG is administered into the affected area at repeated intervals. The body recognises this foreign substance and mounts an immune response against it. In doing so, it attacks the viral infections and eliminates it.

Satin Candy Launches Vanilla Candy Perfume Sandra Thomas, owner of Satin Candy, recently joined forces with The Perfume Co to collaborate on developing a fragrance for her unique lingerie stores in KZN.

The Satin Candy perfume was created featuring main accords of vanilla, almond, powdery, fruity and lastly, woody. The top notes are apricot, plum and coconut, while the heart notes feature tuberose, jasmine, lily-of-the-valley, rose, Brazilian rosewood and caraway. The base notes finish the fragrance off with sandalwood, almond, vanilla and musk.

Sh’Zen Winter Warmers to Keep the Flu and Cold at Bay Hippocrates said in 500 BC that “the way to health is to have an aromatic bath and scented massage every day”. Did you know? • There are at least 30 different strains of virus which can cause cold symptoms. • Soaking in a hot tub at the end of a cold Winter’s day is the ultimate way to revive, rejuvenate and relax. Aroma therapeutic baths are one of the most important and versatile forms of treatment – with the correct essential oils it can give relief from muscular pain and skin conditions and act as a treatment or preventative measure for colds and flu. • The essential oils most likely to diminish the discomfort of a cold, and also help reduce risk of secondary infections due to their bactericidal properties are: Niaouli, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Rosemary and Titree – these form the basis for Sh’Zen’s Resistance Crystals.

Esse’s Biome Plus Technology Spa-liciouS BeauTy Bar Restores Natural Balance Microbes are an integral part of us – without them we would die. We are almost microbe free in the womb, but a few weeks into life, each of us is an ecosystem that includes 10 microbes for every human cell. We can’t digest our food without them, we can’t make essential vitamins and amino acids without them and, like it or not, microbes are largely responsible for the health of our skin. Skin is an ecosystem and in the same way that your gut needs beneficial microbes to function optimally, your skin needs microbes to maintain peak health. Esse is a skincare line educating and creating awareness of our intricate dependence on microbes to function optimally. In stark contrast to the “kill them all” approach currently out there in the industry, Esse aims to work with these microbes, instead of against them. Advances in the range include the incorporation of prebiotics (an available food source) to favour beneficial microbes, the use of mild preservatives, gentle surfactants, keeping pH optimum and the use of 100% natural fragrances. This creates the perfect environment for probiotic supplementation. Restoring and maintaining this optimal balance of microbes works to improve the skin’s barrier function and to slow the ageing process.

New Parents’ Accommodation at Children’s Hospital An upgraded and newly expanded facility was launched recently at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town. The R7.2 million revamp of the parents’ accommodation has doubled its capacity, meeting the desperate need for an upgraded facility for parents to stay over if they are from outside of Cape Town and their child is being treated at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. A new wing of the building consisting of a ground and first floor with 18 bedrooms and two ablution facilities was opened for use by the parents in December 2014. At the end of March, the upgrade of the existing parents’ accommodation building was successfully completed. The facility also provides a communal venue for parents of long-stay patients and day visitors who spend long hours waiting in queues to receive lunch in the upgraded dining room. “The upgraded parents’ accommodation has doubled the number of beds at the hospital’s parents’ accommodation, significantly increasing its capacity to provide 80 out of town parents with beds if their child is being treated at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. We are very proud of this enormous step in improving services offered for families who travel long distances in order to receive medical care,” said Louise Driver, CEO of the Children’s Hospital Trust. The new facility allows parents the precious opportunity to be near their children during their stay in the hospital and is aligned with the belief that there is more to healing children than medication and treatment, more often a mother’s touch is just what the doctor ordered. The story of Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s Minions begins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters – from T. Beat That Nappy Rash! Most babies develop a nappy rash at some stage. Usually it is mild and does not bother them. However, in some cases it can be more severe and extremely sore. This can cause discomfort, along with a very unhappy and grumpy baby. Mums are constantly looking for the ideal barrier cream to protect and prevent their precious bundles against the onset of this common skin irritation. Mums, you need look no further, Dexolé Bébé™ offers you a long lasting, breathable barrier cream which contains moisturising properties and protects your baby’s skin against nappy rash. Nappy rash is often out of our control and can be caused by the skin being exposed to prolonged wetness, as well as changes to the skin’s acidity by urine and faeces. A good barrier cream used at each nappy change can help reduce the chances of nappy rash occurring. Dexolé Bébé™ contains dexpanthenol, the precursor of Vitamin B₅, which has moisturising properties. When used topically, it helps absorb and retain moisture, as well as soften and soothe the skin. When using a dexpanthenol based cream, the skin also becomes softer and more pliable. It seals in the skin’s natural moisture, creating an environment which promotes skin recovery without drying out your baby’s skin. Dexolé Bébé™ is easy to apply, fragrance, colourant and preservative free and great for sensitive skin. It can also be used by breastfeeding mothers to relieve sore nipples.

For boys & girls 5 - 16 years Various ball related skills will be covered: • Ball mastery • Speed • Group play • Small sided games • Emphasising individual ball control & tactics

Incredible Minds Adaptive Learning Centre Sheraine Reddy and Yugen Subraya are parents to nine-year-old Paris Subraya, who was diagnosed with autism and severe mental impairment at three-and-ahalf years old. Under the guidance of her parents, Paris has since gone on to have her amazing paintings at two exhibitions at Durban ArtSpace Gallery! They had very little success in both public special needs schooling and private remedial education for their daughter. Last year they decided to create an academic and sensory centre of excellence that caters for children with special educational needs. Sheraine resigned this year after 20 years in mainstream education and seven years of special education training and courses, to open Incredible Minds Adaptive Learning Centre in Durban North. It is a centre where each child is taught according to their specific style of learning. No child is required to learn according to traditional teaching methods, but instead the curriculum is adapted to suit the learning style of the child. Each child is taught from a strengthsbased approach, highlighting their abilities. Every child has a sensory profile done by an occupational therapist; addressing their sensory needs forms an integral part of the learning programme. A special state-ofthe-art sensory room was created, where the children are allowed at any time to relax. Sheraine has developed a reading programme specifically designed for visual learners, and has had great success with it. One of Sheraine and Yugen’s greatest passions is working with non-verbal children and they use various autism-specific approaches like the iPad, laptops, Makaton sign and Picture Exchange Communication to facilitate communication. The centre also provides speech therapy, occupational therapy, yoga, art and music therapy, sports and swimming. Contact Sheraine Reddy on 084 717 2397. www.mumsmail.com

Five Reasons to Include Dairy in Your Teen’s Daily Diet Milk is a source of important nutrients we all need to survive. These include calcium, vitamin A, vitamin B12, vitamin B2, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, magnesium and protein. All these micronutrients have been linked to improved bone health in children, and support healthy growth during adolescence. This is critical, because the period from 10 to 12 years (in girls) and 12 to 14 years (in boys) is the most important for bone development.

Mind Moves: Moves that Mend the Mind Mind Moves: Moves That Mend the Mind is a reference guide for teachers or parents who come across barriers to learning on a daily basis. Mind Moves mimic primitive reflexive movements that babies naturally do between conception and the first year of life. These movements wire the brain and body for effective learning and can be done in class to effectively ‘warm up’ the brain for learning.

Tips for Raising Teenagers Speaking with many parents, I have discovered that our battles are very similar and we need to learn which battles to pick. I have an empowering approach to life and it is challenged daily by my teenage daughters. I stand for respecting each other’s rights, allowing all voices to be heard and being responsible and accountable.

My reality is very different and I can imagine you nodding your heads. Pick your Battles Teenagers are a class of their own. Stop trying to control them. The person you need to control is yourself. 1. Manage your emotional state when reality and expectation don’t compare. Communicate your expectation calmly and hold your boundaries. Make sure you hold them accountable or it falls flat. 2. Only deal with the important stuff and leave the small stuff. So what if their room is messy? 3. Focus huge amounts of attention on validating good behaviour and compliance. Positivity breeds positivity

I spend an enormous amount of time explaining to my teenage girls what I want to happen. I put boundaries in place and I expect them to be adhered to. I allow for challenge as long as it is done respectfully. I allow small shifts in the expectations accommodating differences in personalities. Having said all of that I still expect: • Clothes are packed in the cupboards Trust yourself and trust the process. Let go as opposed to lying on the floor or bed. of the small stuff and hold the big picture. • Towels are hung up versus the ‘use and drop’ method. • Homework, chores and Source: Stephen Light, Leadership showering is done before dinner. • Going to Expert, stephen@stephenlight.com, bed on time. www.stephenlight.com.

The Paw-Paw in Your Backyard

EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGIST FELICITY TONkINSON

Albert Park, a mixed-race residential area in Durban, has been called the “hood” of the city, yet houses one of the most vibrant and influential music schools in the province, the Durban Music School (DMS). The school’s focus is to give learners, mostly orphaned and vulnerable children who would otherwise not be able to study music, the opportunity to learn music on full bursaries. When I first heard about the Paw-Paw Foundation, I thought it was just a cute name! The head of the DMS, Kim Matthews explained the story behind the Paw-Paw Foundation, which has primarily been funded by Frontline Underwriters for over 10 years, and how this has given birth to a youth jazz band that is already making waves around the world. The majority of the students live in impoverished areas, having to deal with many challenges in their young lives. This programme has given so many young people the ability to dream again, especially those who may never have been exposed to music education at this level. Since music was excluded from the school curriculum, without programmes like this, it’s almost impossible to reach the learners outside of private schools. The students at DMS are given instruments ranging from brass to woodwinds and even keyboards to take to their homes, allowing them to practice. Donors of the Durban Music School have generously sponsored all the instruments. It takes much dedication and time to secure such funding and Matthews is to be commended for her hours of dedication and love for making it possible for these children to have this opportunity year after year.

The outreach programme, now in its 21st year, focuses on creating ocean awareness in no-fee schools in KwaZulu-Natal. The very welcome financial support from the NLDTF now means that another 9 480 learners in Grades 7 that would ordinarily never get to understand our miraculous marine environment, will get a peek at undersea wonders that they might never have imagined. The aim of the project is to give future generations an awareness and understanding of South African biodiversity (with particular emphasis on, but not limited to, the ocean) with a view to their protecting it going forward. The two-fold programme entails both a classroom-based lesson at school and a visit to uShaka Sea World. This is followed by a school-based environmental project.

The highlight for the learners is the visit to uShaka Sea World. The uShaka Sea World education staff assists the teachers with the regulatory paperwork and arrange for busses to transport the learners to uShaka Marine World. Marine Educator, Sazi Sibisihas, has visited over 15 000 learners over the past three years and believes that without bringing the learners to uShaka Marine World, the lessons he conducts at schools could be forgotten. “When I see learners from rural schools walking through the aquarium with wonder and amazement in their eyes, I know that when they get back school, the questions they will ask will be very different from those asked previously.” For more information visit www.seaworld.org.za. www.mumsmail.com

Marsala: Posh Colour of the Year! The Pantone Colour of the Year 2015 is Marsala. The glamorous, beautiful, romantic and warm red tone of the famous Italian fortified wine, Marsala adds a certain magic to your food dishes and adds a tasteful elegance to your event to ensure you are a hostess with the ‘mostest’!

MURALS

Some posh top tips to add Marsala to your next function: • Flowers, flowers, flowers! Combine deep red calla lilies, roses, or orchids, as a centrepiece with soft pinks and purples. The arrangement will “pop” when placed on a shimmering tablecloth. • Marsala-hued table linen paired with earthy, neutral brown, mushroom, or taupe accessories and shades of rusty gold to warm up a chilly Winter evening. Alternate with bright yellow and orange hues for a glamorous spring cocktail evening. • All the Marsala décor too much for you? Create a signature cocktail with a golden liqueur of your choice, add some deep red rose blossoms encased in ice cubes – et voila, you have a stylish pop of colour that is bang on trend and oh-so-delicious! A scrumptious red velvet ‘naked’ cake, with a few warm-red orchids or roses also provides you with a subtle hint of Marsala elegance for your next party! Now, add a swish of Marsala-coloured lipstick, and cheers to an evening of glamour!

Tips for Your Baby’s First Birthday Party

PARTIES & SCHOOLS

Whether you throw a party when your child is one or wait until they are two or three, the first party you throw is a real milestone and an occasion you will always remember. Party food: The easiest party food to organise is a buffet of finger food. Choose a variety of dishes that will suit all guests (big or small). Mini sandwiches or wraps, cocktail sausages, fruit platters, rainbow salads and mini pizzas all work well. Don’t forget plenty of sweet treats too! If you want to take all the hassle out of food prep, you can even hire in a caterer. The cake: A birthday party is not complete without a cake – right? However, keep in mind that the cake doesn’t need to be a masterpiece – a good old sponge covered in chocolate and Smarties will do the trick and be equally delicious.

Party games: If you have a few mums and their young babies, over then food, a cake and a get together might be all you need to make a lovely party. If you have older children too, then you might want to organise a few party games. The old favourites such as pass the parcel and musical chairs are always fun.

Action Heroes Party Superman or Supergirl – whatever your child’s favourite superhero, celebrate the favourite character at an action heroes party! Then let the kids power-up, conquer evil and save the day! Invitations: Make a copy of a page from an action hero comic book, white out some of the speech bubbles, fill in the party details, make copies and mail to guests. Cut action hero emblems and logos from felt. Cut out the same logos from doublesided iron-on interfacing paper. Iron the two layers together. Mail the logos and the party details to your guests. Ask their parents to iron the logos onto old t-shirts or capes and to wear them to the party. Action hero cake: Decorate the cake with an emblem from your child’s favourite action hero costume, such as Superman, using coloured icing. Set action figures all over the cake. Give these to the kids after the party.

Bring Play Back to Work Edward S. Bordin theorised that childhood experiences that are rooted in the urge to play, are the basis to the relation between personality and work. Role-playing games of children, such as being a policeman, teacher, or doctor, are an intrinsically satisfying activity that gives the individual a sense of wholeness and joy. This also functions as a guidance mechanism that influences personality development and its relation to career choice. We see this even in the animal world, such as lion cubs playing, in order to sharpen their instincts to hunt. However when this catalyst of creativity and innovation that we find in play is severed from work, work changes from self-satisfying activities to self-alienating compulsions that amount to drudgery and enforced effort. Let Playworks assist you to bring the play back into work, through teambuilding or development training. Browse through the Playworks website (www.playworks.co.za) to learn more about what they have to offer for your family, friends, school, company, educational institutions or organisations – no matter the size. What to do: • Fill each bowl with two cups of cold water. • Add salt to the bowl, one teaspoon at a time to find out how much salt is needed to make the object float. • Start with the egg and then try the others. • Make a note of how many teaspoons of salt are needed to float each item. So what? At any depth in a fluid there is an upward force due to the effect of gravity on the fluid. This results in pressure applied over an area. If the density of an object in the fluid is greater than the density of the fluid, the object will sink. If the density is less than that of the fluid, the object will float upward due to the buoyancy from the fluid. An object of lower density will float to the top and only be submerged by an amount according to the ratio of the densities. Make It Rain You will need: A wide-mouthed jar such as a pickle jar, small plate, ice cubes and hot water. What to do: • Pour two inches of hot water into the jar. • Cover it with the plate. • Let it sit for approximately three minutes. • Then set the ice cubes on top of the plate. So what? Watch as the water starts to condense on the sides of the jar, falling down the same way rain does in the atmosphere. Hassle Free Riding as a Family It’s no secret that getting out and about with three small kids is almost an impossible feat. Not even a braai has been achievable, however, as days whizz by it gets easier. Recently, I found my dream bike – a metallic pink beauty that makes me feel like a 2015 pink lady from Grease! Oh boy, she is a sight to behold with her white feminine floral swirls and my heart shines every time I see the #rideforburry sticker on her. I am so proud to be an extension of such a wonderfully warm and caring family.

We rode from the one side of the promenade all the way to the other and two hours later, were still peddling away. Such a wonderful way to see our beautiful Durban, do some exercise and spend time with the family as a unit. I am already counting the days to the next sunny day – can’t wait to get down there again!

Speaking of family, we have found the answer to riding in a pack that takes away all the hassle and stress of trying to control small kids on a busy beach promenade. Mike had a ‘kiddy’ chair fitted to his bike for Cooper and through Concept Cyclery, I found the little trailer that clips onto the back of my pink beauty to haul twins Rocco and Lula – it’s ingenious! Every single person we peddled past beamed – such a happy sight!

Cuppa For CANSA A ‘cuppa’ coffee or tea has long been a great ice-breaker, networking tool and communication agent, and now its value extends into the fundraising campaign of the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) – Cuppa For CANSA, proudly supported by Shoprite Checkers. Between June and October 2015, CANSA encourages everyone to get their families, loved ones, friends and colleagues together to host a Cuppa For CANSA event. By hosting or attending or raising funds online, you can help CANSA to provide much needed care and support for cancer patients that stay at CANSA Care Homes while receiving treatment.

Drop off bin at Mum’s Mail offices in Durban North

“We’re so pleased to have the support of Shoprite Checkers and shoppers who supported the in-store Cuppa events last year and helped to raise over a R1 million towards our care and support programmes. Not only do they sponsor all campaign materials, but they are generously donating R18 500 per CANSA Care Home for 2015,” said Elize Joubert, CANSA’s Acting CEO. Cuppa For CANSA is a social and fun way to support a local CANSA Care Home that provides ‘home-from-home’ accommodation to patients undergoing cancer treatment at oncology clinics far from their homes. Guests at the 12 CANSA Care Homes situated in the main metropolitan areas, stay for an average of six weeks and receive home-from-home accommodation, free transport to and from cancer treatment centres as well as nutritious meals. If you or your company will be hosting a Cuppa For CANSA in 2015, send CANSA your selfies or ‘pledges’ as to why you are hosting a Cuppa For CANSA. So get the coffee and cameras ready, and share it using the hashtag #CuppaForCANSA on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. For more information visit www.cuppa.org.za/.
