Meet the Cover Stars World Down Syndrome Day is on 21 March so it is fitting that our gorgeous cover star, Jesse, is a little man who has Down Syndrome. Jesse’s parents are Roxy and Justin Domleo from Pietermaritzburg, and Jesse is their first child.
don’t know what to say or how to act. What I’d like people to know about Jesse is that first and foremost, he is a little baby boy. He smiles when you talk to him, loves to be held, and isn’t convinced about mashed butternut! Jesse was born with an extra chromosome – it doesn’t define him, it just makes him extra special. Yes, we will have challenges ahead of us, but don’t all parents face their own challenges and worries about their children’s future?”
He is a very happy, gentle baby who gives big, toothless smiles freely. He loves to interact with people and being read to, but when he is hungry, he has a pair of lungs on him. “Jesse wakes us up every morning by chatting away to himself in his cot. It is amazing how something so simple can bring you so much joy and fill you with an all-consuming love,” says Roxy.
“I’ve learnt that everyone in life is facing their own Goliath. We need to teach our children to accept those that are different to us and show genuine empathy and kindness to those around us. Children with Down Syndrome have an innocence and contagious joy that lights up a room. That is not something to be afraid of, it is something to embrace and admire,” concludes Roxy.
“Finding out Jesse had Down Syndrome came as a huge shock to us. We were given a very bleak prognosis and were put under huge pressure to terminate. Although we loved him so much already, we felt very apprehensive, and then our beautiful baby boy arrived. He is perfect. When we look into his deep blue eyes, the love we feel for him is indescribable and I just know that he is a gift from God.”

Roxy explained that Jesse has already taught their family so much and brought such joy into their lives. “He has increased our empathy and compassion for other people. So often we are afraid of what we don’t understand, but having a child with special needs has shown me that all children are unique. The most important thing is that they feel loved and accepted. Jesse has also taught us to appreciate the small things in life. A simple smile can brighten one’s day. My heart bursts with pride and joy when people comment on how cute my son is,” says the proud mom.

Oral Health Tips
Taking care of your family’s gums and teeth is vital to a healthy life. World Oral Health Day is on 20 March and the key to good oral health, according to Dr D Govender (principal dentist of Family Dental Care Group) is PREVENTION! He suggests the following: • The earlier the better: Dental care should begin as soon as a child’s first tooth appears, usually around six months. • Seal off trouble. Permanent molars come in around age 6. Thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth can prevent decay in the pits and fissures. This can significantly reduce caries. You need to talk to your dentist professional. • Brush twice a day and floss daily. Brushing removes plaque from the tooth surfaces. Clean between the teeth once a day with floss to remove plaque from between the teeth, where the toothbrush can’t reach. Flossing is essential to prevent gum disease. • Rinse or chew gum after meals. A mouth wash, in addition to daily brushing and
flossing, can increase the cleanliness of your mouth. Antimicrobial mouth rinses reduce bacteria and plaque activity, which cause gingivitis and gum disease. Chewing sugar-free gum after a meal can also protect your teeth as this increases saliva flow, which naturally washes away bacteria and neutralises acid. • Avoid risk factors: Tobacco, excessive alcohol and unhealthy diets – especially those rich in sugar. • Regular dental check-ups: Everyone from the age of two should visit their dentist Dr Suhani every six months for Maharajh a regular check-up MBChB (natal) summa cum laude and a professional FC urol (Sa), M. Avoid issuing tuck shop money regularly. Make it a rare treat. You can’t control what the tuck shop sells, but you can control the kind of snacks you put in their lunchboxes.

Always check food packaging. Avoid snacks that are high in fats and select snacks that are unprocessed where possible. Prepare school lunches the night before. Lunch that is prepped the night before will reduce the chance of you issuing tuck shop money last minute.

Lunch box ideas to help your kids start the year strong. It’s important that your child’s lunch box includes a lot more than nutritionally-empty treats like chips, chocolates and refined foods. Their lunch boxes should be packed with wholesome snacks for growing bodies, like nuts and seeds that are high in Omega 3 for brain function and dried fruit that is a great source of fibre. This is particularly important for kids between the ages of six and 12. They need a balanced, healthy diet to give them the right fuel to grow, boost their immune systems, metabolisms, cognitive development, and proper formation of bones, muscles and teeth.

Cowan House
Cowan House Preparatory School When asked why he had started his own school in 1948, David Black answered; “I am going to open my own school and make it interesting, make it fun. I am going to make them (the pupils) want to learn so you can’t stop them. I want them to get so excited about learning that they don’t want to stop. I know that once they know something, it leads to wanting something else. They must learn to express themselves and find out things for themselves. They must know that living is the most exciting thing around.”
life, comfortable in their own space and most importantly, enquiring of mind. Long may it last. Children are, by and large, uncomplicated beings – they need love, security, nurture and space to explore as they pose, and answer, life’s questions.
Today the corridors of Cowan House still resonate with the values imbued by the school’s founding principal – echoing a sense of fun, curiosity and interest about learning. Walking through the pre-primary, I am often swamped by little people as they confidently question me about why I am wearing a watch, or why the Christmas beetles are still singing, or why Haibo the black Labrador is not with me. They are warmly affectionate, curious about
Our world needs many more adults who are concerned with protecting childhood – just like the incredible teachers at Cowan House do, every day.
A simple statement at Cowan House reminds us of our responsibilities: We are here to coach, teach and grow human beings by developing skills through opportunities. Our children are not yet professionals.

Science Experiment: Lung Capacity
JULIA POWELL BALLET & PILATES Passion & Excellence
How much air can your lungs hold? Air is vital for life. Our lungs fill with air as we inhale. In this experiment we see how much air our lungs can hold.
For boys & girls ages 3yrs & up • Classes in HILTON & PMB • Internationally recognised exams • Stage performances • Pilates for adults
Supplies needed: • Large, clean empty plastic bottle • Water • Large container with flat bottom • Plastic tube or hose • Masking tape • Measuring cup • Permanent marker
Contact Julia 072 125 3555 jpballet.pilates@gmail.com
The Experiment Fill your bottle with water and fill the large container half full with water. With your hand on top of your bottle, turn the bottle upside down and set it in the container of water. Try to keep the water inside the bottle! Carefully put one end of the tubing under the water inside the bottle. While a friend holds the bottle in position, take the biggest breath you can and blow out into the tube. Empty every last air molecule out of your lungs! The Outcome As you blew the air out of your lungs, down the tube and inside the bottle, the water level in the bottle went down. The water in the bottle was replaced with air. That is how much air your lungs hold.

Watch It Fall
Smartie Party Planners
This is a simple game created from kitchen utensils and recyclables that will have kids holding their breath as they test their ability to stop what is certain to happen. Materials: • Pom-poms or packing peanuts • Large spaghetti strainer • Pack of pipe cleaners or wooden skewers • Something to balance the strainer on – eg. books or blocks How to play: Place a layer of pom-poms or packaging peanuts in the bottom of the strainer to approximately 10cm deep. Push pipe cleaners through one side of the strainer and out the other. Continue to add pipe cleaners at random angles until the strainer can be turned over without the pom-poms falling out. Turn the strainer upside down and place on several books or blocks so that the underside of the strainer can be seen. Each player takes a turn pulling out the pipe cleaner of his/her choice. If the removal causes the pom-poms to fall, then those fallen pom-poms are placed in front of that player. At the end of the game, the person who has the smallest pile of fallen pompoms wins. For younger kids: Tots will enjoy playing with them even without the rules of the game. Play ‘threading’ and watch your child gain fine motor skills as he threads the pipe cleaners through the colander.
