The Great Soy Debate There is a lot of information online and circulating around the social networks about the negative side of soy. I have spent 25 years researching and working with vegetarian protein alternatives and I would say that the majority of these articles are opinion-based rather than scientific fact.
• Exclusive designer/custom made headboards • Designer bedroom furniture • Kids’ bedroom furniture • Exclusive bed linen • Bedroom décor: mirrors, wallpaper, art canvas • Upholstery of all furniture
The truth is that foods affect people differently. Cinnamon, like peanuts and other allergens, can kill some people in less than an hour. Wine is loaded with SO2, a preservative which can negatively affect people on a large scale, and yet trillions of litres are consumed annually with the odd person having detrimental results. In Fry’s range of products, the major part of the protein content is wheat and the quantity of soy is quite low (between 15% and 30%). While there are many ‘claims’ that people are getting sick because they are consuming products containing soya, in actual fact hospital beds are loaded with people suffering from things like colon cancers, diabetes, arthritis and heart disease, all directly related to the consumption of meat. Not to mention the increase in health issues as a consequence of meat that has been treated with hormones and antibiotics. Did you know that 60% of all the antibiotics produced in the States today are fed to factory farmed animals? There is more soy in most ordinary pork sausages than there is in a Fry’s vegetarian sausage. At the end of the day my advice is to eat all foods in moderation. Breakthrough Natural Treatment for Seasonal Allergies
Did you know that a staggering 20% of people suffer from sneezing, wheezing and watering eyes each year due to allergies? Chances are that if you or a family member is one of these sufferers, you have either experienced your first “springtime” allergy attack this year, or are dreading its onset shortly… Before diving headfirst into medication and treatments for allergy attacks, the most simple and effective method for managing your allergies is often by AVOIDING your exposure to allergens wherever possible.
Whilst there are many mainstream medicine products available for the treatment of allergies, we are all too aware of the many side effects that may arise from their use, including drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, constipation, stomach pains etc. The list of patients turning to alternative and complementary medicines/ treatments for their ailments continues to grow, as more and more people look for alternatives for themselves and their families that are as close to “natural” as possible.
Fortunately there have been some major advancements in complementary medicines that are effective in the treatment of seasonal and perennial allergies, of which the herb “Butterbur” (Petasites hybridus) is leading the pack, after a series of very impressive clinical trial results. In one study published in the British Medical Journal, a group of Swiss researchers showed how an extract of Butterbur proved just as effective as a popular antihistamine drug in controlling symptoms of hay fever, without the traditional symptom of drowsiness that sometimes occurs. In a second study, a group of British researchers put their stamp of approval on Butterbur’s effectiveness in For those with allergies to dust mites or quelling symptoms of grass allergy. pet dander, try the following AVOIDANCE tactics: At the start of spring this year, SINAL-G • Make it a weekly routine to wipe down syrup for the prevention and treatment all household surfaces. of seasonal and perennial allergies was • Regular washing of bedding, curtains and launched in South Africa with fantastic upholstered furniture will definitely help. results. Tips for Good Posture in Moms

Teaching yourself good posture can decrease, eliminate or avoid neck and back pain:
Comfort for your little royalties 64 Alan Paton Ave, Shop 8B Sidewalk Centre, Scottsville www.RoyalTots.co.za Tel: 072 051 3451 RoyalTots1@gmail.com For any of your baby and child’s needs
When breast feeding, it is important to sit in a chair that offers good support and allows you to feel comfortable and relaxed. Sit right at the back of your chair, feet flat on the floor and knees and hips in a straight line. An armrest or pillows for your arm to rest on is also important. Hold baby in the crook of your supported arm. When picking up your baby or child, try to avoid bending forward. You should rather bend your knees and hips with feet slightly apart, thereby moving into a squatting position. Support your little one underneath with one arm, and wrap the other arm around his/her torso. Slowly straighten into a standing position. When carrying your child for long periods it is advisable to rather use a papoose (kangaroo pouch) or when they are bigger, carry them on your back. When carrying your little one on your hip, you are putting pressure on your spine and surrounding structures, which may lead to spinal, hip or leg pain.

Babies 8 Weeks - 4 Years
It is not always possible to do things the “right way”, but it is important to remember to contract your tummy muscles when you have to move into a position that will be strenuous on your spine, such as placing your child in the car seat or rushing to console baby. When your tummy muscles are contracted, there is more support for your spine, and therefore less chance of injury. For more information contact Dr Helen Schlebusch on 033 – 345 4020.

Safety Tips for Swimming Pools
Summer is fast approaching and parents and child-minders are urged to be extremely vigilant at all times around swimming pools, according to Odette Randelhoff, a well-respected local swim teacher and chairperson of PMB & Midlands Swim Teachers’ Association. Odette added that a good rule to introduce is having a designated adult pool watcher. Similar to the designated driver, stipulate which adult is on duty at the pool; take shifts when entertaining at home so that every child and adult is aware of who is taking charge around the pool. A set of basic rules should be adhered to AT ALL TIMES: • No unsupervised swimming. Children must tell an adult (and the adult MUST answer and acknowledge the child) before entering a pool. • NO child should be allowed on the pool surround at any time unless they are actually about to enter the pool. • Children should always enter the pool safely at the steps or shallow end of the pool. No running and jumping into the pool! • Children should only swim in a recognised swimming costume. If you see your child in a costume, be aware that they are going swimming! • No eating or drinking in a pool, especially bubble gum. • No swimming in a storm. If you can hear thunder or see lightning, no-one should be in or near the pool. • NO ROUGH PLAY! No person should hold onto another in the pool unless they are attempting to save them.

Lunchbox Lifesavers is an online community that has been established to encourage you to remain focused on the benefits of healthier eating at school, and to share interesting things to help you save time, money and effort on your children’s lunchboxes. Bright colours are the easiest way to increase the ‘eye-appeal’ factor in your child’s lunch. Cut fresh fruit and vegetables into bite-size pieces to make it easier for them to eat, as most break times are limited and children would rather be playing anyway. Sandwiches on wholewheat bread provide a healthier option when paired with a nutritious filling such as chicken, peanut butter, or cheese and cucumber. But they can get boring after a while, so why not consider leftovers? Pack a chicken drumstick, pieces of pizza, or left-over meatballs into a wholegrain hotdog bun. At the end of the day there is no ‘magical lunchbox’, it’s all about doing the best that we can to provide healthier options for our children, given our hectic lifestyles and schedules. Bottle Top Beehive with Hand Print Bees This is a great arts and craft idea to do with your children at home. It’s simple and fun and they can modify the idea to create all sorts of different animals and insects. You will need: Empty soda or water bottle (small ones work the best as small hands can hold them,) paint, card and a little hand or two!

This is a great way to print patterns onto a beehive – using the tops of small plastic water bottles. They make great beehive shapes – and even though they are not 100% accurate, meaning they are not hexagons, they will do nicely!

Cut out your beehive shape, add some paint to a plate to dip the top of the bottle into and print away! It is that simple. It looks great! The beehive now needs some bees! Use your hands to make them. Paint your child’s hand with black and yellow stripes and press it on the paper/card to make the bee’s body. Once the hand prints are dry, shadow cut around them and add wings, eyes and feelers! Put it all together and you have a great bee-filled beehive!
