Meet the Cover StarS Our lovely cover stars this month are Kaydon (8) and Kayleigh Shrikumar (6) from Pietermaritzburg. Their parents are Ajeeth and Karusha Shrikumar. Ajeeth is an IT Technician; his work involves user and server support for various clients. Karusha is a Radiographer and her work involves taking scans such as computed tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Mammograms and X-rays. Both their jobs involve close client/patient interaction which they thoroughly enjoy. Kaydon is a kind hearted lad. He loves animals and his dream is to own a pet shop. He has a special love for reptiles, especially
bearded dragons, snakes and iguanas. He even has his own pet bearded dragon. He recently started following Paul Cuffaro on Instagram because he loves Paul’s animal videos. He enjoys playing the drums - with his dad giving him lessons, it makes playing drums extra special. Kayleigh is a confident, friendly little girl with a strong will. She enjoys learning about new things and delights in her achievements. She is a brave girl that does not fear insects or reptiles - she loves having a brother that is always catching or chasing insects. She is also a typical little girl who enjoys playing dress-up games and dancing. As a family they enjoy going on picnics, taking
walks and lying in bed watching movies. “The thing we love the most about being parents is when our kids see us, whether it’s when we fetch them from school or just arriving home from work, the joy that is expressed on their faces together with a tight hug as if they haven’t seen us in a very long time. This makes us feel extremely special to be loved so deeply by these precious children of ours. We are truly blessed to have them,” says Karusha. “No matter how busy life may be as working parents, always make the time to be a part of their special days, for there isn’t any greater joy,” she concludes. Let’s All Get Ready To Local ‘Star Swim Teacher of the Year Award 2018’ recipient, Odette Randelhoff of Seals Swimming Club, was recently asked to address all swim teachers on her successful approach to teaching learn-toswim. “It was a huge honour to share my passion. Sharing in the joy of a learner grasping the skill to float is so exciting! This is the essence of learning to swim. There needs to be a bond of trust between swimmer and teacher - and a patient understanding by the parents. The learner must feel safe and

secure in the pool whilst being active throughout their lessons,” says Odette. “A busy swimmer is a learning swimmer.” Swim lessons will soon start for the new season. Heated pools have assisted greatly in extending the swim season and the time frame before the end of year holidays. Enrol your little toddler, child or yourself now so you can be ready to enjoy our long, hot summer days. Swim teaching is a profession and ALL swim teachers should be qualified and accredited annually through enrolling in
annual First Aid/CPR courses, obtaining an annual police clearance, attending workshops regularly as well as being registered with Swimming South Africa. “To be treated like a professional, us swim teachers need to be professional by being legal. This annual certification needs to be displayed at the learn-to-swim venue,” concludes Odette. For more information contact Odette Randelhoff 082 466 8577 or odette@iuncapped.co.za.
