By the time you read this, I will have turned the big four-oh! Having posted news of this milestone on my Facebook page, I expected some sympathy/empathy from my friends, but all I got was either soppy platitudes about how my life would only begin at 40, or I was blasted for complaining about ONLY being 40 – this from my 60+ friends. So what does 40 look like exactly? Well the really exciting news is that I now need to go for mammograms (I can hardly contain my excitement...).

And then the not-so-funny jokes... • 40 isn’t old, if you’re a tree • The “I just woke up face” of your 30s is the “all day long face” of your 40s • You’re not 40, you’re 18 with 22 years of experience • Another 20 years and it’s old age pension for you • Do you realise that today you are closer to your 80th birthday than the day you were born?

But I prefer to embrace my 40s with a positive attitude (what else can I do?): • I’m forty years old. People have to listen to me now. • I can say no because I’m at an age where taking care of myself first is not only expected, but necessary. • I feel younger than ever—because I’ve connected with so many childhood/junior-high/high-school friends in this age of technology. • At forty, peer-pressure—or at least the urge to give in to it—disappears (or so I’ve been told). • My competitiveness is waning (especially when I occasionally lose Scrabble to my sister in law!). • No hesitation in telling off the teenagers in the movie theatre who insist on talking or answering their phones during the movie.

Readers’ Life Star Letter A letter of recommendation for Mum’s Mail from Mozambique: Good day. I am writing from our small village in Mozambique. We work among the rural people of Mozambique implementing simple solutions to big problems. I contacted Mum’s Mail to advise on what we are doing in Mozambique. March Book Reviews by Books & Books
• The 12 Tribes of Hattie by Ayana Mathis (adult fiction). Hattie Shepherd flees Georgia and settles in Philadelphia hoping for a chance at a better life. Instead, she marries a man who will bring her nothing but disappointment. Her firstborn twins fatally succumb to an illness a few pennies could have prevented. She thereafter gives birth to nine more children whom she raises with a grit and mettle which is captured in 12 luminous narrative threads; their lives tell the story of a mother’s monumental courage and the journey of a nation. With a debut of extraordinary distinction Ayana Mathis tells the story of the children of the Great Migration through the trials of one unforgettable family. Oprah’s book club pick! • Code by Kathy Reichs (teen fiction). Book three sees the Virals series put to the ultimate test when they find a geo-cache containing an ornate puzzle box. Shelton decodes the cipher inside, only to find more tantalising clues left by “The Gamemaster.” A second, greater geo-cache is within reach but the hunt takes a dark turn when Tory locates the other box – a fake bomb – along with a sinister proposal from The Gamemaster. Now the real game has begun: another bomb – a real one – is out there and the clock is ticking. An edge-of-your-seat action thriller! • Young and Wild by John Gatherer (for age 5-12). A fantastic photographic book especially for children, by the author of Call of the Bush. Through his passion for photography Gatherer encourages an awareness and love for the wild and wonderful beasts of Africa as well as the support of the many projects trying to sustain this beautiful wildlife legacy. Included are pictures drawn by children from Virginia Primary School. • The Last Runaway by Tracy Chevalier (adult fiction). Honor Bright, a modest English Quaker, moves to Ohio in 1850 only to find herself alienated and alone in a strange land. Sick from the moment she leaves England she is forced by family tragedy to rely on strangers in 19th Century America, a practical and unsentimental place scarred by the injustice of slavery. Drawn into the clandestine activities of a network helping runaway slaves escape to freedom, Honor befriends two surprising women who embody the power of defiance. She must decide if she too can act on what she believes in, whatever the personal costs. A powerful journey brimming with colour and drama, told against the backdrop of iconic American history. Mums On The Run
Hot on the heels of Margaret Hirsch’s popular Vegetarian cook book, is Luci Hirsch Jackson’s cleverly put together “Mums On The Run”, a recipe book for busy mothers and wives. Luci, the mother of Declan, four, and Connor, three, has concentrated on meals that are quick, easy and nutritious, highlighting the nutritional aspects of certain key ingredients in most recipes. Who knew, for instance that the brinjal contains a good portion of essential Bcomplex vitamins? This is mentioned in the recipe of the beautifully illustrated Mediterranean Mezza Roll-ups. The author has also given tips and advice on microwave and combination cooking – the way to go for busy Mums.

Become a Cancer Buddy
Support for breast cancer patients is well known worldwide. Care for sufferers of other types of cancer, however, is not as widespread. Cancer survivors can help change this situation by becoming “Cancer Buddies”. This system, started in Johannesburg, is a peer-to-peer support project of People Living with Cancer (PLWC). This volunteer support project is aligned with international protocols, and is now one of the most established volunteer psycho-social projects in the country. A branch in Durban is being established. The buddy support network allows recently diagnosed cancer patients to interact with and receive advice and support from cancer survivors who have had a similar type of cancer and have survived. Liz Victor is one such survivor. She was diagnosed at the age of 46 with colon cancer and has “come out the other side” after two operations and six months of chemotherapy. Liz had contacted a Cancer Buddy in Johannesburg during her illness and knows how much it meant to her to speak to someone who had been through the same experience. Support takes the form of, for example, talking to a cancer patient over the phone and helping them deal with their diagnosis and treatment, emotional and psychological issues, legal and social issues, and also giving them hope that there is life beyond the treatment of cancer.

If you are a cancer SURVIVOR and are willing to be a mentor to other sufferers, then consider becoming a Cancer Buddy here in Durban. Your details will be added to the NGO’s database and you will be paired with a patient who is diagnosed with a similar cancer to yours. Contact: Liz Victor, 082 876 7791, liz@toptots.co.za.

Business Life Being Prepared Businesswoman, Annemarie Gerber, and her husband, both came from professional backgrounds. Despite this, Annemarie “didn’t have the foggiest” when it came to their financial affairs. This really made an impact when a friend’s husband died leaving his estate in disarray. Annemarie took action and the result was a “his” and “hers” “All is Well” file. The file (a red one for her and a blue for him) is a comprehensive collection of original documents carefully indexed at the front in a comprehensive checklist. To nail her husband down to get the job done, Annemarie made an appointment in their diaries and made a pleasant occasion of this unpopular task. They now have an annual date to update their files. A file like this would be different for each individual/couple and could contain the following: • Copies of ID • A checklist of what to do in the event of a death • Your will (and details of the executors) • A Living Will • Funeral policy • House ownership documents (clearly stating what is still owed on the bond plus provision made for paying it off should you die). Estate duty provision • Life insurance policies (with their document numbers and the institution’s name and contact details) • Monthly bills e.g. levy, water and lights (plus account number), telephone, SABC TV licence, DSTV, car repayments (plus amount outstanding), Netstar • Credit card and cheque account numbers and amounts • Medical Aid policy (plus details of who to contact upon death) • Cash reserves if assets are frozen upon the death of one of the spouses • Other info you should include: car licence renewal, medic alert, emergency numbers for children, school contact details etc. “It could never happen to me” really is a poor excuse. Make a date of it and get prepared.

Business Life Check Before You Buy • Check the Property. Are you about to buy a house? Be sure it’s a dream home rather than a house of horrors. Before you sign a purchase agreement or any disclosure documents, ask yourself: Do I have to sign? Many new property owners are told that they must sign disclosure documents stating that the property is in good working order before a sale can be completed. While some estate agents might insist that disclosure documents are compulsory, this is simply not the case! By law, you are not required to sign these documents. If you do, and you end up with a house which needs unexpected repair work, you will have no recourse with the estate agent. So, inspect the property you want before buying it and before signing any sales agreement. Source: Inspect-a-Home, 0861 400 400, info@inspectahome.co.za.

• Check the Documents. An important reason to have your sale documents professionally checked before you sign them comes from a High Court case in which an agreement of sale for a sectional title unit was held to be invalid for two technical reasons: • There was no evidence that the person who signed the sale agreement for the seller (a Close Corporation) had the necessary authority in writing from the CC to do so. • The buyer was married in community of property, but had signed the agreement without the required consent of his spouse. Interestingly, a seller has some protection in this regard to the extent that consent will be deemed to have been given if the seller “does not know and cannot reasonably know” of the noncompliance. In this case, however, the seller’s employee had known of the marriage prior to the sale and the defect was held to be fatal.

Veggie Bites • MacDonald’s to open up a vegetarian restaurant: The famous yellow arches have decided to go green in order to meet local tastes. MacDonald’s will be opening its first vegetarian restaurant near the Sikh holy city of Amritsar in northern India where religious authorities forbid consumption of meat at the shrine. The largely Hindu community abstain from beef as it is the meat of a cow, which is considered holy and motherly in all Hindu sects. After the opening in Amritsar, the restaurant chain has plans to open another vegetarian outlet near the Vaishno Devi cave shrine in north western Indian Kashmir – a revered Hindu pilgrimage site that draws hundreds of thousands of worshippers a year. • Did you know? If every South African gave up eating meat for one day a week it would be equivalent to the annual carbon absorbed by 1 million acres of pine forests!

• Meat Free Monday and global food security: According to a report by Oxfam, eating less meat is one easy way that families across the world can contribute to global food security. Furthermore, a recent Dutch study found that the production of meat accounts for 8% of the world’s water use and this usage is set to grow with world meat demand predicted to double by 2050. Oxfam mentioned several simple steps that could ensure that “everyone on the planet has enough to eat, always”. Their suggestions include: waste less food, eat local and seasonal, support small farmers, eat less meat, and cook smart. Source: Tammy Fry. Visit www.facebook.com/ MeatFreeMondaysRSA. EGG SOLDIERS Children will often eat their food if they can play with it first!
WHAT YOU NEED: • Soft-boiled eggs • Bread and butter • Egg cups
WHAT TO DO:
While the eggs are boiling, help your children to make buttered toast. Cut the toast into ‘soldiers’, a couple of centimetres wide. Older children might like to cut the soldiers themselves, or you can cut the toast for your younger children. Place an egg in an egg cup and cut the top off the egg. The soldiers are perfect for dipping into the warm egg, just remind your children to eat them too! Source: 501 TV Free Activities by Hinkler Books

Home Life ADT Security Cautions Against Imposters Most families take stock of their security needs and also of what must be repaired in the home and garden during the first few months of a new year. While this gives the independent contracting industry a welcome boost, it also creates an opportunity for criminals to impersonate service providers: e.g. electricians, telephone repairmen, garden service employees or even security and police officers. “It is therefore imperative for homeowners to take certain precautions and not let their guard down,” said Martin Kriel, M.D. for ADT Security East Coast Region. He said it is important not to allow strangers onto your property no matter what they claim their business is. Informing family and domestic staff when you are expecting workmen etc. is a good idea, so that they don’t open the gate or door to imposters. ’ Kriel said that there is no need to be paranoid when a security or police officer comes knocking but added that there are a few things that can be asked for to positively identify them. “For example, all ADT Reaction Officers carry a branded ID card Providing honest, reliable pool service with their name, PSIRA number and a & maintenance all year round in photograph. They also carry a PSIRA card Durban North, Umhlanga, which has their photograph. Ask to see these cards, as this will prove they are au- Mt Edgecombe & surrounding areas thentic and not criminals posing as secu- Scott O’Leary • 082 956 9295 • Rapid Response scott@scottspoolservices.co.za rity officers. Uniforms are also an imporwww.scottspoolservices.co.za tant indicator. All bona fide ADT officers have official epaulettes on their shoulders and wear bullet-proof vests.”
Kriel recommended that residents always ask for identification and verify this further by contacting whoever the person claims to work for if they are unsure in any way. It is better to be safe than sorry. If something is out of place, report it to the police or your security provider. Source: www.adt.co.za.

Attract Butterflies
Custom Engraved Granite Plaques
Children and adults alike enjoy the beauty, intrigue and allure of butterflies in the garden. These insects are charming in so many ways and can be enticed into the garden with flowers, fruit and host plants for them to lay their eggs upon. However, when the eggs hatch into tiny caterpillars that eat away at the leaves of the host plant, many a gardener takes aim with an arsenal of insect killers to repel the assault. If you can accept the increase of caterpillars and provide suitable host plants for them to munch on, you will have the amazing sight of a myriad butterflies to enjoy. One method of encouraging more butterflies is to plant masses of flowering plants, especially annuals in spring and summer. This creates a habitat and provides nectar, the all-important food source for adult butterflies. Once the nectar supplies are exhausted, butterflies move off to new feeding grounds. So flowers are vitally important butterfly-attractors – the greater the range and diversity of plants, the better the results. Having many flowering plants in your garden has the added benefit of increasing the colour factor in your design making you want to spend more time in the garden just enjoying the scenery. Some butterfly species feed on fruit, especially overripe fruit. A feeding tray can be set up in the garden, using old bananas and other fruit to lure certain types into the area. Beware of monkeys! Just a few of the butterfly-attracting plants will make a difference in your garden. Try Justicia betonica, (Squirrel’s tail, Paper plume), Chrysanthemoides monilifera (Bush-tick berry), Gomphocarpus physocarpus (Milkweed, Balloon cottonbush, Hairy balls), Calodendrum capense (Cape chestnut), Kiggelaria africana (Wild peach) and the many different citrus trees. A Shutter for our Times
A new shutter on the scene which offers some unique and extremely attractive features is the Luxaflex Classic Shutter. This shutter is unique in that it is made of a poly resin 3 compound which means the shutter is completely maintenance free, fire retardant, anti-microbial, child safe as well as warp and chip proof. It is good for steamy bathrooms, children’s play rooms and busy kitchens. In terms of energy efficiency it is remarkable. The shutter is non-porous and non-absorbent with a permanent finish which cannot warp, chip, crack, peel or fade ever! It’s easily cleaned with soap and water and each shutter panel can be easily unhinged, taken onto the front lawn and literally hosed off to get rid of any dirt that may have collected on it. Unlike other wooden or competitive non-wood shutters, the Classic Shutter offers exceptional light control and complete privacy as it closes tightly in both directions. There are no unsightly “mouse holes” or staples that may rust over time. Because the shutters are assembled locally, the lead time is 10 working days from date of order instead of the normal eight-week lead time. Cheaper than wooden shutters, they are the ideal solution for our coastal homes. Classic Shutters are the very essence of style and sleek functionality. Available in hinged, bi-fold and sliding modules they are custom-made to suit your individual needs. Contact: Jenny Howarth, Blinds all of Them, 083 260 5066.

Healthy Life Pilates Etc. Vanessa Balgobind is a Pilates Instructor based in Durban North. Vanessa has always been a fitness fanatic and ventured into Pilates a few years ago. She is certified in Comprehensive Mat Work and Exercise Science. Joseph Pilates was a fitness pioneer who borrowed from ancient and modern technology to create an amazing and entirely new system of total body conditioning – Pilates. There are many benefits from doing Pilates. It develops every aspect of physical fitness including strength, flexibility, co-ordination, endurance, improved balance, spatial and body awareness, improved concentration and muscle tone and also improves posture and body alignment. The main principles of Pilates are: • Concentration – The Pilates principle calls for full attention and awareness of the entire body. • Control – this is probably the fundamental principle of Pilates. Each movement of the body is made in a slow, controlled manner thus developing co-ordination and balance. • Centring – Physically bringing focus to the centre of the body, the powerhouse area between the lower ribs and pubic bone. • Lateral Breathing – Expanding of the lower ribcage during inhalation with the abdominals still held in contraction. • Flowing Movement – All Pilates exercise is done in a flowing manner. • Postural Alignment – Essential for all exercises. • Ribcage Placement - During inhalation and exhalation. • Scapular Stability – Stabilising your shoulder blades on the back of your ribcage is as important as contracting your abdominals during the initiation of each exercise. • Pelvic Placement (neutral) –The most stable and shock-absorbing position. • Leg and Foot Positioning –Aligning legs and feet with hips. • Balanced Nutrition • Weight Maintenance • H24 Sports Nutrition • Business Opportunity

Healthy Life What’s New for the Treatment of Acne Scars?
SPECIALIST DERMATOLOGIST Dr Mohamed F. Sacoor
Acne is a common condition that occurs in teenagers. If untreated or poorly treated, it can lead to significant scarring. This in turn leads to poor self-esteem and low confidence. A new surgical technique has now revolutionised the treatment of acne scarring. It is called Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy. This technique involves taking blood from the patient. The specimen is then centrifuged, leaving plasma that is rich with platelets. The platelets are rich in growth factors, which stimulate dermal remodelling and regeneration. The affected area is then made numb using a topical anaesthetic, which is applied for a short period. A device known as a dermaroller (roller with different sizes of needles) is then rolled on the acne scars. Thereafter, the plasma, rich in platelets, is applied topically to the skin. The dermaroller session is then repeated to facilitate entry of the platelets into the skin.

Healthy Life Neurofeedback Neurofeedback therapy strengthens and calms the brain and improves stability. In short, it rewires it, resulting in improved day-to-day functioning. Like a muscle, your brain gets stronger the more you train it. The positive outcomes are often permanent: symptoms can disappear completely and medication isn’t always needed any more. When the brain works better, you feel better and perform better. Neurofeedback is a powerful intervention which helps a person learn how to modify the brainwave activity to improve functioning and behaviours. It is a painless, non-invasive treatment approach that allows the individual to produce positive changes in brainwave activity. Neurofeedback is successful used with ADHD/ADD, forms of autism, anxiety disorders, sleeping problems, depression, stress, memory problems and helps executives and athletes to improve their optimal peak performance.

How is Neurofeedback Performed? Brainwave activity is measured with a QEEG. The Neurofeedback equipment is connected to the individual with sensors placed on the scalp. Brainwave activity is observed and measured, showing over- or under-activities in the brain that can cause negative emotional and behavioural symptoms. When the brain’s electrical system is performing optimally, the computer will feed sound and visual approval. When it is not, the computer will reflect that as well which trains the brain to rather respond optimally. The brain responds to the positive and negative feedback and learns to function better. After a number of sessions the brain can repeat the desired outcomes. Once the optimised profile is established, the client may see subtle to dramatic behavioural changes. That country had recommended the diet for patients with obesity and diabetes. Nearly 25% of Swedish citizens were following the diet. Source: The Mercury.

Healthy Life HypnoBirthing HypnoBirthing® offers women a rewarding, relaxing and stress-free method of birthing that teaches her the art and joy of experiencing birth in an easier, more comfortable, and often pain-free manner that most closely mirrors nature. The programme is based on the idea that when the mother is afraid, stress hormones are secreted. Most of the oxygenated blood in her body moves to her arms and legs so that she can fight or run away (“fight” or “flight” response). As a result, blood is directed away from the uterus and the cervix, the muscles tense and constrict and the body experiences pain. This lack of blood flow to the uterus means that the muscles start to work against each other and can result in baby’s head pushing against hard unrelenting muscle. Conversely, when the mother is completely relaxed and free from fear, her body is able work naturally to help her birth her baby. In this relaxed state the body also secretes endorphins, a natural painkiller 200 times stronger than morphine. During the 12.5 hour course, each couple will learn breathing, relaxation and visualisation techniques that they will practise at home so they can call them up readily when they are needed during labour. This ensures that both mind and body are well prepared. The birth companion attends every class so that he becomes an integral and vital part of the team. He helps the birthing mum to stay relaxed and is fully equipped to make important decisions should the need arise. With HypnoBirthing® thousands of women have enjoyed shorter labours and fewer Caesareans. They heal faster and their babies tend to be calmer and sleep and feed better. Beautiful Life Magic Box The ultimate in storage has just arrived! Tired of untidy clutter on your dressing table or bathroom vanity? Sweep it all away with this innovative make-up organiser and sort your make-up, jewellery and accessories once and for all! Magic Box provides a neat, easy-to-see storage solution for busy mums everywhere. The Magic Box five-tier model has four drawers with a top compartment that has a flip-top lid so you can store taller items upright if you wish. Bulky items can be popped into the bottom drawer as it’s deeper than the others at 70mm. The full box is 267mm high, 250mm deep and 250mm wide and weighs just under 5kg. It is made of 3mm acrylic which means you can easily see what’s stored in each compartment. Drawers come with removable dividers so you can rearrange to your heart’s content! The six tier is 314mm high and has five drawers. Alice Leah (Editor of Mum’s Mail), was spoilt by her staff for Christmas with a Magic Box. Alice said: “I’d had my eye on a Magic Box that I’d seen in a Mum’s Mail advert, so when I unwrapped my Christmas gift from my staff and saw that it was a Magic Box, I just about did back flips! My challenge has always been how to neatly store a pile of make-up/bits and pieces on my teeny tiny dressing table, and the Magic Box has solved that problem - in a classy, elegant way. I don’t know how I’ve lived without it. Every woman needs one, so spoil yourself, a loved one or a friend and get them a Magic Box today!” Contact: Aneesa, 031 – 207 2903, 083 791 2006, aneesaelias@gmail.com. A W E S O M E

Beautiful Life Organic Make-Up
Wake Up Looking Beautiful Permanent Eyeliner & Permanent Eyebrows
In 2001 Yingchun Liu’s seven year old daughter showed an interest in nail polish. As a mother, Ying took a long, hard look at the ingredients in conventional nail polish and was horrified to find toxic chemicals! As a chemist Ying knew how much potential damage these toxic chemicals could do to her innocent daughter. Ying went out to retail stores, searching for water-based, non-toxic nail polish. Much to her surprise she failed to find anything. Ying had no choice but to develop a water-based nail polish herself. At that point, she began dreaming of introducing a line of non-toxic, environmentally friendly nail polish products to the market.

Although Ying has worked as a research chemist for many years, only after she started working on water-based nail polish did she realise how difficult it was to formulate a quick-drying, long-lasting, waterbased nail polish. The current formulation for manufacturing Suncoat water-based nail polish is the result of “numerous long days in the lab, many sleepless nights in the office and in the library...” Suncoat Products include water-based nail polish products, nail polish gel remover, kids’ make-up kit, kids’ manicure kit, eyeliner, mascara, eye shadow, lip gloss, lip stick and foundation. The products are free from the abovementioned ingredients, are 100% paraben free, non-toxic, noncarcinogenic, biodegradable and contain mineral pigments and certified organic ingredients. They are suitable for vegans, vegetarians and allergy sufferers.

Beautiful Life Fashion Q&A Q: I bought a gorgeous sequin top and am not sure if I can wear it to the office. What do you think? (Jill). A: Good news, sequins aren’t just for eveningwear! You can achieve a glamorous effect, without going overboard, if you wear this trend in a subtle way to the office. For example: Wear your sequin top under a tailored jacket or suit to ensure you still look smart and professional. And the bonus is that your sequin top is also great for dressing up a pair of jeans when going out after work (Willene Sieberhagen). Q: I’ve had the same hair cut forever! I want to try something new. What’s the instyle? (Anna). A: Without question a heavy, side-swept fringe! This gorgeous style will suit most face shapes, except if you have a short forehead or very dark circles under NAILS NAILS your eyes. Use a shimmery highlighter under the brow or a dab to the inner corner of the eyes to create sparkle. During the evening make-up can become darker and more daring (Chata Romano).

OptiPHI is a skin care system that has been designed by a biomedical engineering group, which is also involved in the design and manufacture of tissue-engineered skin substitutes and high-tech wound-care products. Ideally, the OptiPHI skin peel treatment should be done over a six-week period (one per week for six weeks). Each week, the percentage of the “peel” used is gradually increased. The effect of the professional treatment can be optimised with the use of the home-care products. The treatment can also be done as a once-aweek/once-a-month, and can be alternated with your usual Dermalogica skin care treatment. Alice Leah, Editor of Mum’s Mail was treated to an OptiPHI facial and the results were astounding: “I saw an instant improvement in skin texture, and while my skin was quite dry for a few days following the facial, after the roughness disappeared my complexion was glowing! I also noticed a reduction in pore size and fine lines. I was very satisfied and I will do this again, as it was not at all painful which is unusual for a peel.” Contact: Skin Science, 031 – 564 3045, skinscience@iafrica.com.

Dream Nails Flagship Store
Dream Nails Beauty, La Lucia, recently underwent an impressive makeover. With a whole new store, technical staff training and top-of-the-range exclusive products and treatments it is now the flagship store for the Dream Nails Beauty franchise in KZN. This means that new treatments and products, as well as training, are initiated at this store approximately 18 months before being rolled out to other branches countrywide. Having focused primarily on nail and foot care, the salon now offers other treatments and products too. These include skincare, spa treatments, weight loss and hair removal. The store and all it offers are conveniently located in La Lucia Mall making it easy for busy businesswomen to pop in. New owner, Jayde Weare, comes from a pharmaceutical brand management background, which is why she makes the perfect new addition to the salon. She has an extensive knowledge of the chemical make-up of beauty products as well as which products will thrive in a retail environment. New products available at Dream Nails include Mama MioTM (for targeted weight loss and toning) and Optiphi, a South African skincare range. Another top-of-the-range brand that this flagship store has introduced is Alma with its AFT Pulsated Light skin rejuvenation treatment and its laser hair removal. Both treatments use in-motion, cool tip technology which is virtually pain-free and creates flawless results. Setting Your Child Up for Success
Being able to function in an adult world one day means we need to have learnt that life in general has consequences. If as an adult you don’t meet deadlines etc. you will ultimately be fired! Training our children to one day be independent starts at a very early age. At 18 months we can start to teach them about life. Some parents praise their children excessively. Susan picks up her toys and she is a “clever girl”. Susan was not “clever” when she put away her toys. She did what you would expect her to do. The more appropriate praise is “Thank you for putting away your toys.” Teach your children about choices very early on. A two year old can choose between the red and the pink dress for today. Be careful not to say: “What would you like for breakfast?” Giving them the opportunity to choose helps them to be able to make choices one day when they are older. Life has consequences. If you don’t pick up your toys I will, but they will go into a black bag not to be seen for at least a few weeks. Consequence learnt! Lack of discipline can impact on a child reaching his full potential and will most probably contribute to a lower self-esteem, as he thinks he can’t do this without help. Raising a confident, well-adjusted child takes guts from you as a parent to allow them to face the consequences of their choices. She has to be confident that she can choose and cope with the consequences of a wrong choice. Source: Liz Victor, TOPTOTS, liz@toptots.co.za, 082 876 7791, www.toptots.co.za.

Tiny Life Quick Fixes for Baby Sleep • Swaddle your newborn until 12 weeks of age for every sleep. This inhibits the startle reflex. • If your seven month old is waking more than once at night, increase the protein in his diet to 2-3T per meal. • Use white noise to keep your baby in a deeper state of sleep. • Follow a bedtime routine strictly until 18 months. • Leave your hand on your newborn for 15 minutes after you put him down to sleep until the hypnagogic startle passes. • Drop a day sleep at 14 months to one sleep a day at 12pm-2pm. • Use high quality nappies at night to avoid getting up for a wet baby. • Use a sleeping bag from five months of age, when babies start to kick off their blankets. • Use block-out lining on the windows to darken the room. Observational studies suggest that complementary feeding (weaning onto solids) with four or more solid foods in the first four months of life may increase the risk of developing allergic disease (but not food allergy). Expressing Breast Milk
It is a well-known fact that a mother’s own breast milk is best for her baby as it provides optimal nutrition and immune protection, which is crucial in a newborn’s first few months. For many reasons, mums may find that they need to express milk and bottle-feed their babies to ensure they continue to receive the nutrition and health benefits of breast milk. However, many mothers are put off the idea of expressing because it can be uncomfortable and unpleasant. Global research conducted by Philips AVENT through the Philips Centre for Health and Wellbeing revealed that 23% of women stop breastfeeding within the first three months because it becomes too painful to continue. The findings also showed that a perceived lack of milk supply was a key barrier to the continuation of breastfeed- Unplanned pregnancy? Decisions to make? ing. Philips AVENT has launched a new Comfort breast pump which has been developed to offer a more comfortable expressing position for easier milk flow, with no need to lean forward. The Philips AVENT Natural bottle includes a breast-shaped teat that makes it easier for babies to latch on and maintain the same suckling pattern as on the breast, enabling mothers to continue providing breast milk even if they can no longer breastfeed, for example, due to returning to work.
Understanding all your alternatives makes you really feel free to choose. We are here to listen to you. For a confidential caring friend, call us.
The breast pumps have an innovative massage cushion that combines peristaltic and vacuum actions for greater efficacy of milk expression. Soft silicone petals gently massage the breast to stimulate the letdown reflex and encourage increased milk flow and supply. Pumping is also more comfortable and less tiring as a result of the uniquely shaped handle and gentle fingertip control.

Labels are for Clothing, Not for People!
In a world, which seems to be going crazy, we are seeing more problems in children and teenagers than ever before. In this modern, fast-paced lifestyle, children with “problems” or “challenges” are easily labelled with lots of emphasis on diagnosis and often not enough emphasis on what to practically do about it! After presenting a paper at the 2nd Global Childhood Conference at Oxford University in 2012, it has been the mission of Zelna Lauwrens, founder of EQual Zeal® and The Life Studio for Kids®, to educate parents and professionals on the dangers of attaching a hasty diagnosis to young people. “In a world where we have alternative interventions at our fingertips, we need to be exploring ways to build onto our children’s strengths rather than trying to ‘fix’ what is ‘wrong’,” said Zelna. Zelna’s programmes are now run by independent licencees all over S.A. and in Canada and are aimed at providing valuable life tools from Toddler to Teen. Zelna will be hosting a “Labels are for Clothing, Not for People” half-day seminar in Durban on 14 April. Whether you are a parent, teacher, counsellor, coach, therapist, psychologist, skills trainer or practitioner, this seminar will lift the lid on some misperceptions behind child behaviour and will leave you with a toolkit to: • Explore the influence of our modern world on children • Understand the reasons behind why children are labelled • Find practical solutions to focus on strengthening rather than “fixing” Contact: Zelna Lauwrens, 079 999 2214, zelna@equalzeal.com, www.equalzeal.com www.kidslifestudio.com. The Toad There was a toad that once I know’d – he lived down by the river! With every breeze he would sneeze – he’d shiver and he’d quiver! His home at night was a lilly pad upon the water’s edge, and in the day he’d hop away to hide in a nearby hedge! For birds of prey would pass each day and they really were quite thinner! With beady eyes and taloned claws they’d search the ground for dinner! A juicy toad – if he showed, would look just like a steak, or maybe if his choice was sweet – a lovely piece of cake! So the toad was wise to hide from those sharp eyes, and not be the surprise, that would end up clutched in his beak or claw - that would be his demise! Now have you listened – have you learnt from this story ring? Or have you even stopped to think or consider anything? So I will tell you from my heart to stay away from harm, Stay where there’s peace and calm, ‘Cause then there’s naught to fear! So did you listen and did you hear, The lesson that the toad has taught? It is just for you today So please keep safe and do be careful when you go out to play!

Food Allergies
When you have a food allergy, your body has a reaction to specific food. Symptoms may include rashes, stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhoea, asthma, eczema and runny nose. • Milk allergy and intolerance: One of the most common in children. A child may be allergic to either of the milk proteins – casein, whey or both. Whey proteins are damaged by heat, so those sensitive to whey may be able to tolerate heat-treated (long-life) milk or milk powder. Lactose intolerance occurs when lactose cannot be digested because the enzyme that helps to digest it is lacking in the body. • Wheat allergy: A reaction to the proteins in wheat. Treatment is avoidance of wheat products. Starches that can be eaten are rye bread, barley, oats, potatoes, sweet potatoes, rice and maize meal. Gluten allergy is more severe and all wheat products, rye, barley and oats need to be avoided. • Soy allergy: Soya beans contain a protein that some people are allergic to. Avoid soy products and note that soy flour is often used in baked products, margarines, processed foods and packet sauces. • Nut allergy: All nuts can cause allergies and they are usually labelled “tree nuts” – cashews, almonds, walnuts, Brazil nuts, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pine nuts and pistachios. The most severe (causing a life-threatening shock reaction called anaphylaxis) is the peanut allergy. Peanuts are widely used in baked products, cereals, Chinese and Thai dishes, crackers, health bars, icecream, peanut butter and peanut oil. • Fish and shellfish allergy: This is a large group of food and some people may be allergic to one shellfish but able to tolerate others. • Egg allergy: The reaction mostly occurs to egg white proteins. Egg should be introduced to infants only from 10 months of age. Source: www.spar.co.za.

Young Life Three Reasons to Start Manners Early Many parents wonder why they should teach their children “respectful’ behaviour before the age of 7-8, which is when they really only start to understand the concept of “respect”. Practica Program have found that: • Acting respectfully leads to being respectful. Parents who delay teaching manners may find it difficult to act as if their child is a blessing if he runs around like a self-centred mini-dictator. Positive comments from others, however, can have a positive impact on a child’s developing self-concept. By the time a child is old enough to truly understand what respect means, he will be used to thinking of himself as a “nice boy”. Acting contrary to this will be unthinkable to him! • Good manners help pave the way to a higher EQ. One of the most TENNIS important components of EQ is a person’s Professional ability to effectively “read” what other Coaching • Classes 1 hr people are feeling and respond accord• Beginner to pro level per week ingly. Young Life Dear Chloe Photography Chloe Boshoff of Dear Chloe Photography specialises in family portraits. Based in Pietermaritzburg, Chloe travels regularly to Durban doing photoshoots in both cities as well as in the Midlands. Clients choose their own venue or meet the photographer at a venue suggested by her, venues that fit with the photoshoot theme. The theme could be related to a family member’s special interest/hobbies. So for example, for a family member who loves mountain biking, the venue might be an outdoor biking trail. A shoot like this would be accompanied by appropriate props – provided by the client or by Chloe herself. Special touches Chloe provides could include helium balloons, personalised cupcakes, picnic baskets etc.

Educated Life From Study to Work Whilst a university or college graduate may theoretically be ready for the work place, he/she often lacks work experience and basic life skills. This gap can make it difficult for newly qualified graduates to enter into the job market. Varsity College’s Career Centre helps students bridge the gap and prepare them more comprehensively for the next stage. Firstly students are encouraged to take on part-time work. This work can be in their field of study (e.g. with a law firm) or general part-time work. Working whilst studying helps students practise what they have learnt, develop skills such as dealing with people, and builds a network of contacts. The Career Centre Co-ordinator will assist students with these job opportunities and will also assist students with CV preparation, interview techniques and skills development through one-on-one consultation and workshops. Secondly students are encouraged to register with the Career Centre Website, thereby exposing themselves to a host of helpful information. Materials on the website include: CV and interview tips, blogs, podcasts, managing work expectations, job opportunities and much more. Thirdly, companies are invited to advertise their entry-level part-time, full-time, permanent jobs and Graduate Placement Programmes through the Career Centre. The Career Centre Co-ordinator will assist you with sourcing the recommended students or graduates for your company. Educated Life Homework Blues Remember back to the days when you had homework and hated it? Well, times may have changed, but school hasn’t. Your child probably also has a strong aversion to doing homework. But if you are able to help your child establish a regular routine and manage their time, and if you show them that you are there to assist where needed, they will be better equipped to deal with it. Here are some tips to help them on their way: • Keep in touch with your child’s school and familiarise yourself with what is expected of your child. If you have a better understanding, you will be able to help them more successfully. • Create a homework-friendly environment. Provide a space where there is sufficient lighting, that is comfortable and quiet and make sure that your child has all the necessary books and stationery that they require. Educated Life Treating Adult ADHD A Durban resident anonymously shared with Mum’s Mail their experience of treating their adult ADHD: “I was diagnosed at the age of 35 although I have always known that I had it. Ritalin is effective so I started taking it but didn’t like it, as I had to take tablets for side effects. After a few months I decided to stop Ritalin and explore other strategies. I tried alternatives like Neurofeedback. This worked while I was with the psychologist but [long term] it wasn’t sustainable or effective for me. So I went back to medication. I now use Concerta, which is 12-hour release combined with Strattera. It took six months to get the right dose. There are side effects so you cannot take this schedule 7 drug lightly. [Although] I do find that I am able to focus on issues more effectively on medication, I think that medication like this should not be taken on a long term basis. It should be used so that the ADHD person can learn strategies and coping mechanisms so that they can cope on their own as adults. My long term goal is to cope without it eventually. You must understand that [ADD/ADHD] is a chemical imbalance in the brain so it cannot be cured. Choosing to use medication or not ... also depends on the severity of the imbalance and what co-occurring disorders there are (depression, conflict disorder, aggression, OCD, etc.). Some people are okay with a proper diet, right exercise and taking Omega 3, 6, 9. Some people cannot live without using Ritalin. Everyone is an individual and needs to be treated as such.” Contact: Dave Pugh-Parry, Living ADDventure, www.livingaddventure.co.za.

Educated Life Introducing The Tots n Pots Junior Master Chef For Schools Tots n Pots are thrilled to announce the roll out of their new Junior Master Chef Programme 2013 for schools across S.A. The organisation has put together an agenda of tried and tested, healthy and fun recipes to encourage kiddies to get excited about healthy food and the preparation process, thus encouraging good eating habits. There will be just three classes per school year followed by a Grand Finale Tots n Pots Junior Master Chef Class in Term 4. Children aged 4+ are encouraged to get involved. Classes will be broken into groups of 10-15 children per session. Each class will be one hour and will comprise teaching on utensils, ingredients, recipe and a demo. The Grand Finale class takes the form of a one-hour workshop. For this class each child will be presented with two secret recipes which they will make and be judged on. The Tots n Pots teacher will be present to help the children. Each child who completes the course will receive a Tots n Pots Junior Master Chef Certificate plus their goodies to take home and a little treat for taking part. There will be one overall winner per group and a runner up. Each overall winner will receive a Tots n Pots Junior Master Chef Trophy and the runner up will receive a medal. All ingredients, equipment, hats and aprons will be supplied by Tots n Pots. Recipes are non-baking recipes so an oven isn’t needed (e.g. potato boats, Pavlova, etc). Weekly classes available in Berea/Morningside (contact ameena@totsnpots.com). Franchise in Upper Highway and Westville available (contact angie@totsnpots.com). The recommended daily intake for children aged five to 10 is 7530 kilojoules. This includes 70g fat, 85g sugar and 4g salt. To provide children with the daily nutrition they require a healthy lunchbox can include: starchy foods such as bread, rice, potatoes or pasta; lean proteins; reduced fat dairy such as low fat yoghurt, reduced fat cheese or low fat milk; fruit and vegetables; water to keep them hydrated. Nestlé has introduced a Healthy Kids programme in partnership with the Department of Basic Education to improve nutrition knowledge and raise health and wellness awareness among school-going children. For more information contact 082 671 5530, nhw.nestle@za.nestle.com, www.nestle.co.za. • Pack Variety for the Fussy Eater: It is tempting to keep packing lunchbox foods that you know your child will eat and to steer clear of those that have been refused in the past. Bear in mind, though, that eating a wide variety of healthy foods is the goal. Make lunchboxes appealing by packing a variety of small containers, each containing a different snack, e.g. fruit/veggie/chicken skewers, mini pitas, mini wraps and pasta salad. Avoid using bribery with other foods (like sweets) and remember that you should act as a positive role model. The Heart & Stroke Foundation has a tuckshop programme aimed at addressing unhealthy eating amongst school children and reducing childhood obesity. Contact 031 – 261 9055. • Snack ideas: Popcorn, veggie sticks, boiled eggs, corn on the cob, dates, nuts and trail mix. Contact: Nicole Harvey, Harvey’s Health, 031 – 266 0636, 033 – 396 5835, nicole@harveyshealth.co.za, www.harveyshealth.co.za.

Party Life Turfing Out the Old
Foam & Inflatable Fun
S.O.C.A. 5s at the Crusaders Sports Complex in Durban North has recently replaced its synthetic football turf with a funky new fourth generation surface. It is the latest in synthetic turf technology and is the first site in S.A. to be using this high quality synthetic grass. The new red and blue fields are very soft under foot and provide a safer and far superior playing experience as the field replicates the best football fields in the world. As an additional benefit, the soft rubber compound is designed to reduce injuries and provide ideal traction for use with normal soccer boots as well as indoor boots. The synthetic grass fields are used for indoor soccer, volleyball, kickball and netball. Everyone is welcome to book hourly slots on the new fields at any time of the day or night. There are adults’ leagues operating during the week, however, they will be starting junior leagues for children in the near future. The venue also offers mini soccer training for kids aged 3-6 who want to have fun and start learning the game. The arena is available to schools, playgroups and anybody wanting to have some fun. The S.O.C.A. 5 arena is situated in the middle of the Crusaders Sports Club complex and is ideal for birthday parties and social events. Jumping castles can be accommodated and there are braai facilities, a tuckshop and bar onsite. S.O.C.A. 5 will supply all equipment for children’s/teen’s/adult parties (including referees and coaches, trophies and medals if desired), will play games with the children and can cater as well. Parties can be customised to meet the customer’s needs and budget. Pop in and see the brand new Football Turf at Crusaders SC. For games/social/party bookings contact: Janine Brown, 082 826 9714.

Dealing with Death
Death is part of life. But fear of the unknown, and the dread that surrounds losing a loved one, is such that most people don’t want to think about it. Consequently, when death does occur many people are completely unprepared for the important practical arrangements that need to be made. A little knowledge about what to do when someone dies can help enormously. When a death occurs: • A Notification of Death (BI-1663) must be signed by a doctor (if death occurs at home or in a private hospital), by the attending doctor/hospital medical superintendent at a government hospital, or possibly by a district surgeon (after notifying the SAPS) in the case of sudden or accidental death (e.g. road accident). • In the case of accidental death the deceased must be identified before the family is given a release document (SAPS382). This must be handed to the Funeral Director, which gives them permission to collect the deceased’s remains. Note: the BI-1663 is NOT a death certificate. • The next step is to make funeral arrangements (Funeral Directors are on call 24 hours a day). They will make arrangements to obtain the information necessary for the death certificate, will get the burial permit, and will notify the media on behalf of the family. The actual funeral service will involve deciding on cremation/burial, the order of service, type of coffin, venue etc. • To obtain a death certificate the death notice (BI-1663) needs to be obtained from the doctor/pathologist and handed in at Home Affairs. The death certificate will be issued by Home Affairs. Several copies of the death certificate must then be certified by the police before being used to close accounts, notify insurance companies etc. Contact: Oakleigh Funeral Home, 033 – 342 6116, 031 – 205 9959.

Scam Savvy How do you spot bank phishing scams, a clairvoyant’s dubious claims, chain e-mails and fake faith healers? Start by reading “Scam’d” by Stephen Cloete. Stephen is Cruise Director on board the successful cruise liners operated out of South Africa by MSC. He is also a trained magician. And magic tricks, according to Stephen, are simple ways of deceiving people into believing false claims. Because of his background in magic tricks Stephen has recognised many scams in the real world, and has thus felt qualified to write a book, teaching people how to recognise scams and scam artists. “Scam’d” is the result. The book is divided into two parts. In the second part, Stephen teaches readers some magic tricks. In the first part he explains the modus operandi behind many scams. He starts this section by explaining some magic history as well as his own career path. He then goes on to describe a number of well-known scams and, more importantly, how we can learn from them. For example, Stephen tells us what things certain financial scam e-mails have in common: • The English and grammar is typically bad. • The mail is not directly addressed to you – it is generic. • The letter holds an element of truth which can be verified. • There is always a very large cash reward offered. • There is urgency which may include the money is about to be confiscated. • You are asked to keep the matter confidential. • You cannot verify the actual identity of the author as the mail will usually be from a web-based e-mail account.
“You know your children are growing up when they stop asking you where they came from and refuse to tell you where they're going.” P.J. O'Rourke
