Editor’s Life By now you’ve probably realised that I have a rather soft spot for The Sunflower Fund, and am super excited that National Bandana Day is coming up this month. Bollywood Bling High Tea 2013 Bollywood Comes to Town Five hundred and thirty ladies, dressed in their brightest, most gorgeous Indian outfits, poured into the Hellenic Hall in Umgeni Park, Durban North, on 6 September for our 8th Annual Bollywood Bling High Tea in association with The Sunflower Fund. The all-morning event raised a stunning R117 565.99 for the charity. The Sunflower Fund creates awareness of and raises funds for the tissue typing of potential bone marrow stem cell donors for inclusion on the S.A. Bone Marrow Registry. But it wasn’t just The Sunflower Fund that gained. Hampers galore, raffles and mystery envelope prizes were the order of the day for guests with each lady receiving a HUGE goodie bag as well as a beautiful fragrance from Sunbird Perfumes. The best dressed prize went to Helen Littlewood – a difficult choice with so many appropriately attired beauties around! Professor Matthew Lester from the Rhodes Business School gave a sobering talk (peppered with good humour) on tax and Aaron McIlroy entertained the ladies with his hilarious Veejay Moodley character. Delicious food, seamless emceeing by Ravi R, faultless sound and media delivery, glitzy table decorations and superb organisation made for a fun morning. Entertainment and things to see weren’t just restricted to the main hall; in adjacent function rooms and outside, stalls with a range of goods on sale jostled together, contributing to the bright, happy and busy atmosphere of our well-known fundraising event. He is also husband to Katya and father to twin daughters, Alexandra and Maria. After matriculating Nick trained in the hotel business, starting at the Rob Roy Hotel. • Olive Oil: add 1 tsp olive oil to 1/4 cup lemon juice for a non-toxic polish that gently cleans wood surfaces, helps remove dust and gives furniture a shine. • Epsom Salts: to give your patchy brown lawn a boost add 2Tbsp Epsom Salts to 2L of water and water over your lawn. The key is learning right communication skills, a skill everyone should learn properly. 10% of communication is talking, 90% is listening! If you find in your family no-one is communicating properly, try this little communication tool and see if it helps. Firstly, find a good time of the day to sit with the person you want to talk to. Secondly, tell the person that you would like to talk to them about something that is troubling you. Thirdly, when you begin to explain what is it you want to say, always start it with the phrase: “I feel like this...when you…etc.” It’s good to express the emotions that someone else’s actions have caused you to feel. Now here’s the key tool. Before that person responds to what you have said, they have to repeat in their own words what they have heard you say. Only once you tell them that they have heard you correctly can they then respond to what you have said, and visa versa! Healthy Life Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Mammogram Time Calling ladies and moms! October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Located on Umhlanga Ridge, The North Coast Bone Density & Breast Care Centre is offering a 20% cash discount on mammograms and bone density scans for the month of October. Healthy Life Caring for Men’s Health Care for the men in your life by brushing up on your knowledge of two important men’s health issues – prostate cancer and prostate enlargement (Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy). The prostate is a small gland which forms part of the male reproductive system. It is situated below the bladder. Prostate cancer, a disease which can often be cured or controlled, may go undiagnosed in the early stages. Screening is therefore important and all men 50 years and older should have an annual checkup. Men at risk, including black men and those with a family history of the disease, should undergo testing from age 40 or 45. Testing comprises a digital rectal examination and a blood test. Treatment options for early prostate cancer are: surgical removal of the prostate gland, radiation therapy, radioactive seed implants (brachytherapy), hormone treatment or watchful waiting. Brachytherapy, an interesting and very effective therapy, consists of inserting tiny radioactive seeds into the prostate during a minor surgical procedure. Rays are emitted from the seeds, in a localised area, ensuring that very little normal tissue is exposed to the radiation. Prostate enlargement (BPH) is when the prostate gland becomes enlarged but is not cancerous. This is very normal for men and more than 50% men in their sixties and as many as 90% in their seventies and eighties have some symptoms of BPH. Because the gland becomes enlarged men can experience problems urinating. Other problems include urinary infections and the development of stones. Healthy Life World Mental Health Day: Depression in the Elderly October 10th is World Mental Health Day and the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) will be creating awareness about Depression in the Elderly. Advancing age is often accompanied by loss of social support systems due to the death of a spouse or siblings, retirement, or relocation of residence. Because of changes in an elderly person’s circumstances and the fact that elderly people are expected to slow down, doctors and family may miss the signs of depression. As a result, effective treatment often gets delayed, forcing many elderly people to unnecessarily struggle with depression. In the rural areas, depression in the elderly can be a significant problem as many of them may be suffering due to having to take care of a large family under financial Registered Trauma Counsellor stress. Breast Cancer Susceptibility Gene 1 (BRCA1) and BRCA2 are human genes that prevent uncontrolled cell growth. Mutation of these genes is linked to hereditary cancer of the breast, ovaries, cervix, uterus, pancreas, prostate, stomach, skin and colon. Although BRCA mutations increase the risk it only accounts for 5% to 10% of all breast cancers. In the general population 12% of females may develop breast cancer whereas in females with positive mutated BRCA 60% may develop breast cancer. Men with a mutated BRCA gene are also at risk of developing breast cancer. The frequency of BRCA mutations is greater in certain racial and ethnic groups. A genetic counsellor assesses the family history of cancer to evaluate if there is increased risk of cancer. The need to test for BRCA mutations is then determined. This risk is higher if a first or second degree relative developed breast (including male relatives) or ovarian cancer. A blood sample is collected for the test. WHO should test for BRCA? In a family with a history of breast/ovarian cancer, that family member should be tested first. Only if that person tests positive should other family members consider testing. A positive test provides information on a person’s RISK of developing cancer as not all women with a positive test will develop cancer. If a person tests positive, it is recommended to have more regular cancer screening tests done. Some women may elect for prophylactic surgery as in the case of Angelina Jolie or to use certain drugs that can decrease the risk of developing cancer. Educated Life Caring4Girls Programme In 2012 Richard Mabaso, CEO of the Imbumba Foundation, became the first South African to climb and summit Mt Kilimanjaro for Nelson Mandela Day in his Trek4Mandela Day initiative. The purpose of the climb was to raise funds to buy 67 000 packets of sanitary towels (in line with the 67 minutes for Mandela Day) to support underprivileged girls in poor schools across South Africa. The expedition was a great success in that it did not only reach the set target but it propelled the establishment of the Caring4Girls initiative. In 2013 Richard climbed Mt Kilimanjaro again and received a big increase in support from all sectors – corporate, government, organisations and individuals. The programme has the following objectives: • Reach and support underprivileged girls with sanitary towels across South Africa. • Create puberty and menstrual hygiene awareness training. • Establish Caring4Girls Advocacy groups in schools and communities. • Reduce school absenteeism and dropouts caused by menstrual related challenges in poor schools.

Research conducted by the organisation’s facilitators in several communities revealed that an average poor girl misses between one and seven days of schooling each month due to menstrual related challenges. Educated Life Gems on our Doorstep Just a few kilometres inland of Gateway Shopping Centre is the township of Inanda. Approached from the West, the entry point to the area gives a lovely view of rolling hills and the glistening Inanda Dam. I recently took part in a tour of Inanda with Garsons Expeditions and enjoyed a fascinating morning. Our first stop was Inanda Seminary. This school with its beautiful, historic buildings, pretty, tree-lined entrance and quiet, uniformed teen girls is a gem in the middle of a township. Unlike other private schools of its kind at the beginning of apartheid, Inanda Seminary was not closed down. This was because the government of the day saw no threat in educating girls. Through the years the boarding school has maintained its high standard and continues to produce high-calibre students. Last year Matrics obtained a 100% pass rate and university exemption. Steeped in interesting history, this institution is well worth a visit.

Our next stop was the Ohlange Institute which is where Nelson Mandela cast his vote in the first democratic elections of 1994 and where John Dube, the founder of the ANC, is buried. Lastly we visited a museum dedicated to Mahatma Ghandi. The museum was the former leader’s house and each room is filled with plaques describing his philosophy, explaining historic moments and displaying quotes. Wellversed tour guides at each stop made our visit worthwhile and the drive was really pleasant. I was particularly struck by the life-changing philosophies that were nurtured at these educational institutions. Appreciation of these sites, right on our doorstep, should never be allowed to die. Party Life Pretty Party Fare Make these gorgeous Tea Cups and Baskets for a little girls’ birthday party: Tea Cups Ingredients: Glacé Icing, Pink Butter Icing, 10 Marie Biscuits, 10 Edible Cupcake Cases, 10 Sugared Round Jelly Rings, 30 Sugar Flowers, Jelly Tots. Method: Roll out the glacé icing and cut out 10 flowers the size of the Marie biscuit. Using a small blob of butter icing, stick these to the biscuits and press flat. Using a little butter icing, stick a cupcake case to the flower. Cut off one side of a jelly ring and use a dab of butter icing to stick this to the right-hand side of the cupcake case. Hold it in place for a few seconds until it sticks. Stick three sugar flowers to the front of each cup, for decoration. Fill an icing bag with the pink butter icing and decorate the rim of the cup. Fill each cup with Jelly Tots. Baskets Ingredients: Glacé Icing, 10 Edible Cupcake Cases, 10 Round Biscuits, Thin Liquorice Strips, Variety of Small Sweets. Method: Using glacé icing, stick the cupcake cases to the round biscuits. For the handles, cut the liquorice strips into pieces and stick into place with glacé icing. Caffe Italia Express, a newly opened Italian restaurant, is one that offers superior quality food. Affiliated to the Caffe Italia in Sunningdale, the new Caffe Italia Express opened its doors in July in the Park Boulevard Centre, Brown’s Drift Road, Umgeni Park. It prides itself in using only the freshest products and, where necessary, imported Italian products. Pizzas are prepared in a traditional wood fire oven and homemade pastas are prepared on a daily basis. On opening night guests comprised faithful customers, foodies and the media. A selection of red and white wine was poured for tasting, and an array of dishes was served, whetting appetites for what the restaurant has to offer. Although mainly a take-away, there is a small sitdown restaurant area with striking yet simple and clean décor. Visit Caffe Italia Express and glance through their extensive menu. Relaxed Life Luxury Camping When my kids heard we were going “camping” in tents in the bush, they were very wary – would they be safe in tents in the wild? Little did they know that the “tents” we would be staying in at Falaza Game Park and Spa were luxury tents, complete with an indoor and outdoor en suite bathroom. Located in Hluhluwe (just three hours from Durban), this 4 star Game Park and Spa offers 15 comfortable luxury tents, seven of which have outside showers and baths as well as an inside shower. The Game Park, which is situated on 800 hectares of indigenous sand forest and savannah grassland, is home to two of the Big 5, Rhino and Buffalo, and there are also Giraffe, Zebra, Wildebeest, Impala, Nyala, Kudu, Waterbuck, Duiker and much, much more. We enjoyed refreshments and simple, uncomplicated meals both indoors in the restaurant and outdoors under the stars. A bar, a lounge area, and an outdoor boma were well used by us during our stay as the rugby was on that Saturday afternoon. A game drive within the Falaza property was most enjoyable, and our game ranger was very knowledgeable. My hubby and I enjoyed a delicious full body massage at the spa while the kids entertained themselves around the pool (we are lucky that they are now old enough to play unsupervised). The local area offers a number of activities, including whale watching in season, and freshwater fishing. Nearby is the World Heritage Site of St Lucia and the Hluhluwe Game Reserve is a 30 minute drive away. We launched the Bandana Baby and Toddler Competition alongside our National Bandana Day campaign to show support to our brave young patients who lose their hair during chemotherapy treatments.” National Bandana Day is the biggest annual fundraiser and all the money raised goes towards recruiting more bone marrow stem cell donors for inclusion on the South African Bone Marrow Registry and to tissue type each blood sample to the improved molecular (DNA) level at a cost of R2000.
