Editor‛s Life The end of the year is always a time of reflection. Looking back on 2012, what do you consider to be your “highs” and “lows”? For me, a definite “low” was losing a special Aunt to lung cancer, as well as my cousin in a motorbike accident (both within a 2 month period).
Maths. Reading. Success.
Give your child the edge.
An exciting “high” was the overseas holiday my sister treated my kids to – memories made that won’t be easily forgotten, celebrating my Dad’s 70th birthday, and the fact that we are still in business despite the ongoing recession which has closed so many businesses down.

How to Help
• The Pietermaritzburg Children’s Home (PCH) is the oldest children’s home in the city, having started in 1886. The NPO operates at 45 Teak Road, Woodlands, Pietermaritzburg, and provides child care services 24 hours a day to approximately 75 children aged six to 20 (children can remain at the home until they are 21 if they are completing their Matric). Children cared for are orphaned, vulnerable and/or affected or infected by HIV and AIDS. PCH operates on the “cottage” system. This comprises four complete housing units each with enough space to accommodate 20 children. The four are divided into junior girls, junior boys, senior girls and senior boys. Individuals and companies can assist the home through donating items or sponsoring children. Items needed include: juice bottles, furniture and groceries. Contact: 033 – 387 4004/5/8. • The Tembaletu Trust started its first project, the Tembaletu Community Education Centre (TCEC) in 1989. TCEC works in communities in KZN offering accessible and appropriate education, training and community development opportunities for previously disadvantaged South Africans. To encourage previously disadvantaged children to read, Tembaletu began publishing story books for primary school children and taking the books into the community. Tembaletu also has an HIV/AIDS Counselling and Testing Centre which was established and operates in partnership with the KZN Department of Health as a service to the public. Other services include: career counselling and study skills training, computer literacy training, maths and science tutorials for high school learners, environmental awareness programmes for children and much more. For more info contact: 033 – 394 7807, general@tembaletu.co.za, www.tembaletu. co.za. Send your charity info to brenda@mumsmail.com.

Healthy Life/Beautiful Life Exercising Outdoors If exercise is a chore for you, and that’s often the reason you put it off, you need to look for active and interesting hobbies that are also going to keep you fit. Our gorgeous climate means more opportunities for outdoor activities, so seize the day, round up friends, pets or children and transform fitness into outdoor fun. • Take a hike: Hiking outdoors towards a planned destination is a great group activity for friends. Choose a scenic route, pack a picnic basket and aim for a specific, marked-out destination, like a lagoon or waterfall. This will give you incentive to move, without you even realising you are exercising. • Step up your girl-time: Instead of a sitdown lunch, meet your friends in the park and enjoy a brisk walk while you talk. You will be burning calories while you catch up, and absorbing some quality time in the sun. • Get fit in the garden: A few key pieces of equipment transform your home into a hive of activity. Gardens or outdoor entertainment areas make wonderful sports grounds, so invest in a stand-alone trampoline, volleyball/badminton net, or basketball hoop. • Train in the park: The kiddies’ jungle gym is exercise equipment in disguise. Practise standing push-ups against a low beam of the jungle gym, and try some leg lifts while hanging from the monkey bars, equivalent to a sit-up. Head over to the nearest park bench for some tricep dips and squats, and for your cool down – hit the swings! • Make it a date: If you struggle with motivation, sign yourself and your friends up for charity walks and fun runs.

Healthy Life/Beautiful Life Suncare Know-How Myths: • Wearing sunscreen can cause Vitamin D deficiency (you need only 10-15 minutes a day of sunlight to meet your daily requirement). • If it’s cold or cloudy you don’t need sunscreen (up to 40% UV radiation still reaches earth on a cloudy day). • SPF15 Moisturiser + SPF15 Sunscreen = SPF30 (SPF numbers can’t be added). Reasons to wear sunscreen: • Melanin is your body’s first line of defence. The lighter someone’s skin colour the less melanin it has to absorb UV rays. • Skin damage from sunlight builds up with continued sun exposure, whether sunburn occurs or not. Anyone over the age of six months should use sunscreen daily. • Even people who work inside are exposed to UV rays for brief periods during the day, especially if they work close to windows. Sun damage facts: • 80% of a person’s lifetime sun exposure occurs before age 21. • Cataracts can be caused from UV exposure. • Getting sunburnt fries your skin thus ruining the proteins such as collage and elastin which are the properties that keep you looking young. Sunscreen know-how: • Know your skin type and use the correct SPF. Check with your dermatologist what SPF is right for you based on your skin type. • Use a sunscreen that protects from UVA and UVB. • Waterproof is not the same as water resistant. Choose water proof products as they need to be reapplied every 80 minutes. • Use: creams (non-stinging) for face; gels for scalp; sticks for near eyes/ears; water-based for oily skin; two layers of spray sunscreen. Tiny Life Bilingualism How does being exposed to two or more languages affect a child’s language development? Concerns that it will be delayed are unfounded. Research shows that bilingual children reach language milestones at a similar rate to their monolingual peers. Being bilingual will give a child many advantages, so it’s important to know how to make the most of it. Don’t wait to introduce a new language. Young children have a greater capacity to learn language because their brains are still developing. What comes naturally to them is incredibly difficult for someone introduced to a language later in life. Family members or caregivers should read stories to children and let them listen to music in each language. Do not mix languages. If Mom is English speaking and Dad Afrikaans, then each should speak their first language exclusively to their children. This helps children to distinguish between different languages, and prevents the child from joining the two to form a “hybrid” language. Often a child will mix two languages in a sentence – this does not mean that they are confusing the two. It is more likely that they could not find the correct words to express themselves in one language, so switched to another.

This will change as their language proficiency develops. They will begin to adapt to each situation – switching to Zulu when Gogo arrives, and back to English when visiting with school friends. A rich culture is attached to language – emphasise the importance and uniqueness of each. This will undoubtedly result in more tolerant and open young people. To quote François Grosjean, the author of Bilingual: Life and Reality, one never regrets knowing several languages, but one can certainly regret not knowing enough. Young Life/Party Life Summer is Coming! When the weather is cold or wet children have few opportunities to get accustomed to the swimming pool – and its dangers. But now that summer is here, parents and childminders are warned to be mindful of this. Odette Randelhoff, member of the S.A. Swim Teachers’ National Technical Committee and nominee for the prestigious Swim Teacher of the Year Award on several occasions, urges all to be extremely vigilant. Drownings in home pools are on the increase – a very sad statistic – especially considering that it is avoidable. Swim lessons from a reputable swim teacher (qualified, registered and accredited) should be a priority in your toddler’s upbringing. Every swimmer should be aware of their limitations in the water. It is equally important to know that you cannot swim as it is to learn to swim! Some basic rules: • NO unsupervised swimming. Children must tell an adult (and the adult MUST answer and acknowledge the child) before entering a pool. • NO child should be allowed on the pool surround at any time unless they are actually about to enter the pool. The pool surround belongs to the pool! • NO running and jumping into the pool. Always enter the pool safely at the steps. • ONLY swim in a recognised swimming costume. This will assist parents – if you see your child in their costume, presume that they are about to go and swim! • NO swimming in a storm. If you can hear thunder or see lightning, it is UNSAFE to swim! • NO rough play. No person should hold onto another in the pool unless they are attempting to save them! Educated Life Embroidery Workshop for Children When Rhoda Gray and Lynda Jackson (grannies who embroider with a talented group of ladies at the Embroiderers’ Guild of S.A.) held a workshop for children in July, they were delighted with the overwhelmingly positive response. As a result Rhoda and Lynda and their group of enthusiastic teachers will be running another Embroidery Workshop in the upcoming school holidays. This will take place on 11 and 12 December, 10am to 12pm, at the Hilton Library. Booking is essential before 7 December and the cost is R70 per child per day. The workshop is for children aged seven to 12 years. Children are given kits to choose from and at the last workshop these included: Key holder/pincushion, headband, small glass containers to hold a tea light, and bookmarks. Kits contain all the materials to make up one item, with some children making up more than one item per workshop. Skills taught include: Decorative tacking, simple cross stitches and the sewing on of buttons and threads. At the December workshop more advanced skills for the older children will be included. The Hilton Library is an ideal venue for the workshop. The workshops run for two hours with a tea break during which juices/hot chocolate and cupcakes are supplied. “Our July workshop was such a success,” said Rhoda, “that the girls begged for another, which is why we’re doing two days in December to accommodate those who didn’t come last time! This is not a moneymaking thing, it’s to develop embroidery skills in young children – and some Mums as well!” To book contact: Lynda Jackson, 073 188 9638.

Summer Camp Fun
Relaxed Life
Christmas wish lists and festive jingles are the order of the day in the upcoming holidays. With so many gift ideas promoted in the shops parents are often stumped when it comes to buying good gifts for their children. This year give a gift that does not break or become outdated before the tinsel and paper lands in the bin. Sugar Bay offers the discerning parent an opportunity to send their children to Summer Camp where they are exposed to a life-changing experience in a safe, fun-filled environment. With a high 3:1 child-to-counsellor ratio, your children will benefit from individual attention whilst at camp. All counsellors receive training in first aid and safety and activities are run by specialist instructors in their field. With over 100 activities to choose from campers get the opportunity to rule their own destiny when they decide which activities to participate in. They can kayak after breakfast, do body boarding before lunch, skating and paintball in the afternoon, and excel in skits and stunts after supper. With no Mums there to nag them, campers take more responsibility for themselves, their belongings and their “space at camp, keeping their rooms neat and tidy. Social skills will be enhanced at Summer Camp when your children meet and mix with children from all around the world and interact with international counsellors. Campers grow in self-confidence when they complete tasks and activities at camp that they have not been exposed to before like bosu, surfing or endo boarding. Parents who wish to give their children a holiday which will live on in their memories for a lifetime can contact Sugar Bay. Contact: 032 – 485 3778, holidays@sugarbay.co.za.
