Editor‛s Life
And then the not-so-funny jokes... • 40 isn’t old, if you’re a tree • The “I just woke up face” of your 30s is the “all day long face” of your 40s • You’re not 40, you’re 18 with 22 years of experience • Another 20 years and it’s old age pension for you • Do you realise that today you are closer to your 80th birthday than the day you were born?
PIETERMARITZBURG
GRADES 1 - 12
By the time you read this, I will have turned the big four-oh! Having posted news of this milestone on my Facebook page, I expected some sympathy/empathy from my friends, but all I got was either soppy platitudes about how my life would only begin at 40, or I was blasted for complaining about ONLY being 40 – this from my 60+ friends. So what does 40 look like exactly? Well the really exciting news is that I now need to go for mammograms (I can hardly contain my excitement...).

But I prefer to embrace my 40s with a positive attitude (what else can I do?): • I’m forty years old. People have to listen to me now. • I can say no because I’m at an age where taking care of myself first is not only expected, but necessary. • I feel younger than ever—because I’ve connected with so many childhood/junior-high/high-school friends in this age of technology. • At forty, peer-pressure—or at least the urge to give in to it—disappears. (Or so I’ve been told.) • My competitiveness is waning (especially when I occasionally lose Scrabble to my sister in law!). • No hesitation in telling off the teenagers in the movie theatre who insist on talking or answering their phones during the movie.

Tiny Life/Young Life Sibling Rivalry What is it with siblings? One moment you are marvelling at their special bond, and the next you have to stop them from pulling each other’s hair out! Why? Each child wants to be seen as an individual with their own talents and interests. Often children feel they are getting an unequal share of attention or discipline, and this can cause jealousy and unhappiness. Stressful, busy lives can mean less attention for all which can result in further conflict. Bored, tired or hungry children are also more inclined to pick fights.

Here is some sound advice for minimising sibling rivalry: • You need not treat your children equally to be fair. When it is a child’s birthday or if they are sick, they warrant special attention. If a mother hugs each of her children each time she hugs one, the hugs lose meaning. • Each child needs special possessions that are theirs alone, and not for sharing. • Avoid comparisons (“When Ben was three he could …”). Each child is unique and will develop differently – remember this. • Don’t take sides unless you are certain who is to blame. When Emily hits Hannah, it could be because Hannah was teasing her incessantly. • Try to let siblings work out their differences and intervene only when absolutely necessary. • Acknowledge feelings of anger and resentment. It’s okay to feel angry, but it’s not okay to bash your brother over the head to let him know! • Praise siblings when they get along. Focus on positive behaviour and reward this from time to time (“You played beautifully all morning, let’s have a picnic in the garden for lunch”). • Never underestimate the power of even 10 minutes of one-on-one time.

Young Life/Party Life Aggression in Pre-Schoolers If your child is generally well-behaved at home, but engages in unacceptable behaviour at school then something’s going on somewhere that needs to be looked at. The older a child gets, the more worrisome aggression is. At age three, you needn’t worry as much; three year olds are still learning how to control themselves. But at four years of age, they should be able to self-regulate. Four year olds who bite, hit, are disruptive and non-compliant, are a concern. Interestingly, aggression is very often a sign that a child is experiencing heightened levels of anxiety. As such, it’s really important to step back and see what may be causing him/her to act out this anxiety (in an aggressive manner). A new baby in the house, or a move, is stressful for children. Similarly, problems at work are stresses that trickle down from us to our children. A child will react to the fact that parents are preoccupied with difficulties at work. And of course, if parents are struggling in their marital relationship they may be so consumed with their problems that they don’t realise just how anxious, uncertain and unsettled their children are. What you say and how you respond emotionally can make a big difference to handling aggression. First, ask questions such as: “When you bite Johnny, how do you think he feels?” Second, let the child know how his/her behaviour makes you feel. When there is a good relationship between parent and child, the child will really take it in if he knows you are upset by his behaviour. Importantly, children who are aggressive soon become unpopular with classmates. This will almost always negatively affect a child’s developing sense of self-worth.

Young Life/Party Life Lights On and Off • Solar Power Mozambique is an organisation that helps to supply solar power solutions particularly in outlying areas of Mozambique. Their home solar solutions consist of: • A solar lighting system – a small, easy-to-install solar panel with a light strong enough to light a room of seven square metres. Included are a number of cell phone adapters to charge cell phones. Specifications include: battery that becomes full in eight hours of sunlight, 45 hours of light on lowest level, nine hours of light on highest level. • A solar cooking unit. This is ideal for Africa’s sunny climate and is suitable for cooking stews, maize, rice and for baking. It comprises mainly recycled materials and has a hardened plastic base making it ideal as a heavyduty cooking solution. There is no installation necessary for this stand-alone unit. The unit is placed in the sun and after a few hours the meal (for up to six people) is cooked and ready to be served. Working Memory
Working memory is a function of the brain which allows us to use information we have obtained, process it, manipulate it and apply it when we think. We use working memory in different parts of our brain so that we can take the action necessary when we want to fulfil a certain task. Working memory is absolutely essential throughout our lives whether it be for learning or social interactions, or as adults in our professional lives. It allows us to stay focused on a task and we therefore have the ability to block out distractions. The following demonstrates when working memory is used and what occurs when working memory is not working efficiently: • Pre-Primary. Working memory is for learning the alphabet, focusing on instructions and remaining seated to complete tasks. Working memory needs exercising when children seem unwilling/unable to learn alphabet and numbers, when they can’t focus or follow instructions, and when they don’t settle on activities. • Primary School. Working memory is for reading and reading comprehension, mental arithmetic, interacting appropriately in a peer group. Working memory needs exercising when the child reads but doesn’t understand/remember, has difficulty remembering tables and participating in group activities or keeping friends. • High School. Working memory is for working independently, planning and executing activities, solving maths word problems, planning team sports, understanding social cues, writing essays. Working memory needs exercising when children won’t do homework without supervision, can’t analyse and understand word problems, can’t plan and execute activities or become an efficient team player, interrupts and talks without listening, produces disorganised and incomplete essays.

Dealing with Death Death is part of life. But fear of the unknown, and the dread that surrounds losing a loved one, is such that most people don’t want to think about it. Consequently, when death does occur many people are completely unprepared for the important practical arrangements that need to be made. A little knowledge about what to do when someone dies can help enormously. When a death occurs: • A Notification of Death (BI-1663) must be signed by a doctor (if death occurs at home or in a private hospital), by the attending doctor/hospital medical superintendent at a government hospital, or possibly by a district surgeon (after notifying the SAPS) in the case of sudden or accidental death (e.g. road accident). • In the case of accidental death the deceased must be identified before the family is given a release document (SAPS382). This must be handed to the Funeral Director, which gives them permission to collect the deceased’s remains. Note: the BI-1663 is NOT a death certificate. • The next step is to make funeral arrangements (Funeral Directors are on call 24 hours a day). They will make arrangements to obtain the information necessary for the death certificate, will get the burial permit, and will notify the media on behalf of the family. The actual funeral service will involve deciding on cremation/burial, the order of service, type of coffin, venue etc. • To obtain a death certificate the death notice (BI-1663) needs to be obtained from the doctor/pathologist and handed in at Home Affairs. The death certificate will be issued by Home Affairs. Several copies of the death certificate must then be certified by the police before being used to close accounts, notify insurance companies etc.
