Tiny Life Breast and Bottle? Recent draft regulations on foodstuffs for infants and young children aim to further encourage exclusive and prolonged breastfeeding amongst South African mothers. However, if promulgated in their current form, the draft regulations would not only limit the amount of information mothers will be able to access about infant nutrition and complementary foods, but could have the unintended consequence of increasing levels of malnutrition and potentially child morbidity and mortality, says the Infant Feeding Association (IFA). “The IFA fully supports initiatives that actively promote, increase and protect exclusive breastfeeding for at least the first six months of a baby’s life, followed by a diet of breastmilk and appropriate complementary foods for as long as possible thereafter...,” says Lisa Walker, IFA spokesperson. At present, approximately 8% of South African babies are exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life with 31% fed a diet of both breastmilk and solid foods thereafter. However, says Walker, there are a number of reasons why it can be difficult for South African women to breastfeed exclusively and for a prolonged period of time as implied by the draft regulations.

The most colour you will have seen in one place. “Out of my Paintbox”, the theme for the 37th Sunday Tribune Garden & Leisure Show, has created so much excitement amongst the exhibitors, that they cannot wait for you to see it all come together! The displays and creative ideas that are coming together are way beyond what was imagined and the anticipation is building. The show will take place at the Royal Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg from 21 to 24 September. Acknowledged as the largest horticultural event of its kind – modelled on the Chelsea concept – in the southern hemisphere, the show includes up to 50 designer gardens, the quality (of most) ranking with the best in the world. The colour once again will be spectacular! Mums get your child to fill in a colour-in-by-number flyer and WIN BIG with the Garden Show. The competition is open to children under the age of eight years. Winners will be announced at the garden show and the judges’ decision is final. Prizes cannot be exchanged for money or vouchers.
