Our “Very Vintage High Tea” on the 2nd of September was a huge success, raising around R80 000 for The Sunflower Fund. This will enable them to recruit 80 new bone marrow stem cell donors to include on the SA Bone Marrow Registry. Whether you were a sponsor or a guest, or a reader who now knows more about the amazing work The Sunflower Fund does, I’d like to thank you for being part of this event.

RE/MAX Panache

There was no shortage of things to drink, see and eat: JC Le Roux, Liqui Fruit and GoCoffee cappuccinos were on tap, while the ladies enjoyed the more than 25 “pop-up shops”. Savoury and sweet treats by Eat Greek ensured that we did not want for anything. Faux fur, pearls, satin and lace, as well as divine fascinators (hairpieces) were on display in abundance. The tables were beautifully decorated, and the hall expertly draped in cream fabric.

This event has become well known for its awesome goodie bags, and with more than 200 generous sub-sponsors, the guests were spoilt rotten. At the close of the event, each lady collected their gift and a sepia photo which was taken on arrival by Steph Stein (guests posed in front of a genuine vintage car from Consolidated Auction Group). Baby City, La Lucia Mall and Sanlam were once again the main sponsors of this year’s event and I would like to thank them for their ongoing generosity! I would also like to thank ADT Security and First Car Rental for their contribution. FAN MAIL Mum’s Mail High Tea Feedback • Thank you for a MOST MARVELLOUS morning. This is the fifth High Tea event that I have attended and each year it has just got better and better. Your speakers were SO entertaining and that only happens after careful research on your part. Well done and I am already looking forward to next year’s event. You are a ‘star’. Colleen • Congratulations on a successful High Tea! I thoroughly enjoyed the event - it was the first I’ve attended but most certainly not the last. Claire Steyn • Well done on the amazing High Tea. You really outdid yourself with all the organising. Those goodie bags and prizes were insane! I know each year you want to make it better than the year before and you did it again! Cindy Norcott • Thank you for a fantabulous morning. Kudos for all the effort - I had six High Tea virgins at my table - they all were awed. Gillian Scott • Thank you very much for a delightful Friday morning. The décor, speakers, jazz band, entertainment and goodie bags were excellent. Thank you for reminding us able-bodied people that there are so many out there who are going through sheer hell. The DVD most certainly shook us all – there were many in tears. Tholsi Mudly High Tea Photo Queries • I must compliment you on the great function and of course the super goodie bags. How do I get my pic that was taken at the car? BOOKWORM October Book & DVD Reviews For Adults: BOOKS: • The Conscious Parent, written by Shefali Tsabary, is an unusual approach to the subject of parenting. Tsabary’s focus is not on changing children’s behaviour, but on using the presence of children in our lives to change us as parents. She explains that becoming more aware (i.e. conscious) of why we do things will help us to deal better with our children rather than reacting to them. Published by Namaste Publishing. • The Intaview by Robyn-Tracy Martin is a comprehensive little book about how best to approach an interview. From first impressions, to drawing up a correct CV, from how to present yourself to what questions not to ask, the information is up to date, professional and helpful. To obtain a copy of the book contact Robyn-Tracy at robyntracy@theintaview.co.za. DVD: • The Grace Card follows the touching story of Mac, a man who struggles to forgive himself, and the person responsible, for the death of his firstborn son. After becoming a policeman, Mac is partnered with another policeman who, despite animosity from Mac, befriends him and uses his Christian faith to make a huge difference in the hurting man’s life. A NuMetro release.

For Children: BOOKS: • The Butterfly Heart by Paula Leyden is a beautifully written story set in Zambia. Twin sisters, Bul-Boo and Madillo, call on Ifwafwa, the snake man, to help their friend Winifred when she is confronted with an overwhelming problem. The writing is clear, without prejudice or cliché and both amusing and serious. Highly recommended for senior primary school children. Published by Pan Macmillan. Cost: R95. • Barbie in a Fashion Fairytale Sticker Activity Book is based on the DVD story of Barbie by the same name. It contains a mix of storytelling, drawing activities and space for stickers (provided in the centre of the book). Published by Pearson Education. • Wonders of Learning (Discover Endangered Animals and Discover Whales) as well as Our Environment A Planet in Crisis are excellent resources for primary school children. The books cover the subjects in different parts of the world, and contain intelligent, relevant information in easy-to-read, interesting formats. Published by Pearson Education. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS Know Your Consumer Rights We have all heard about the new Consumer Protection Act and how it protects you and me, the ordinary consumer. But how many of us understand our new rights and feel empowered to stand up for those rights? As consumers, the CPA affects our daily lives. For example, have you ever cancelled a holiday and forfeited your entire deposit, been bumped from a flight that is overbooked or had your gym contract automatically renewed for another year because you failed to cancel it? You will be pleased to know the Act protects us from abuses such as these! The only problem is that none of us have the time to read and dissect the entire Act in its legal form. The solution? A little A5 handbook called Know Your Consumer Rights, complied by Advocate NJ Melville. This user-friendly pocket guide covers the typical day-to-day implications of this Act. Each chapter (Shopping, Dining Out, Services Agreements, Advertising and Marketing, and Complaints) is further divided into different categories which allow consumers to quickly determine what to do. This informative guide has claimed its space in my handbag and I definitely recommend it. I first whipped it out after my five year old daughter accidentally broke an expensive ornament in-store, directly below the familiar sign “pretty to look at, nice to hold, if it is broken, consider it sold.” With a quick flick to page 21, and with the Act firmly behind me, I walked out not having to pay, as the damage was accidental. Cost: R90 (Afrikaans edition also available). Review and Orders: Natasha Goncalves, Coniston Books, sales@coniston.co.za. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has 1 copy of Know Your Consumer Rights to give away. BUSINESS TALK Businesswoman of the Month: Gillian Scott “Always say ‘yes’ – that way when one door closes you have another six or seven doors you can choose to go through”. Gillian Scott has an enthusiasm for life that fuels her work and leisure time. It’s a life full of goals, of created possibilities, of relationships and the thrill of learning new things. Gillian is a print consultant for Paarl Media. Her job is to take a client’s artwork (e.g. for a magazine) from artwork stage to being printed on paper. But because of her in-depth knowledge of the subject, Gillian likes to work with clients right from conception stage through to delivery. She loves everything about her job, from “being OCD about paperwork”, to treating her clients as friends, to learning all she can about the fascinating web printing process at Paarl Media’s factory in Mariannhill. Gillian is particularly inspired by new technology. “I love the immediacy of the new technology used in our business, things change daily and I love learning the new methods.” On the leisure front Gillian derives much joy from her Harley Davidson motorbike. She bought her first bike only four years ago and is already the road captain for the Durban Chapter of the Harley Owners’ Group - and the only woman road captain in the country! Gill rides with mixed groups, does charity rides, helps train new lady riders and has plenty of long rides planned for the future. Speaking of which, this bubbly lady plans to climb Kilimanjaro next year, ride Route 66 in the USA when she is 60, and... “I’m only 54,” smiled Gill “there’s so much more out there.”

BUSINESS TALK Everyone Loves VAT Tips Of the many areas in which Umhlanga and Pinetown Accountants can assist, one of them is VAT.

The platform for members to network, promote their business, get ideas and obtain referrals

If you are a small business, DON’T assume that VAT does not apply to you as it would for larger businesses; every business in South Africa that provides goods or services is in fact scrutinised by SARS. A vendor is obliged to register for VAT if turnover in a year is likely to exceed R1 million. Where turnover exceeds R50 000 in a year, a vendor can register voluntarily. Failure to comply could lead to serious problems.

To ensure that your VAT is in order, consider the following VAT tips for small businesses: Sharon: 083 641 4334 shazcard@mweb.co.za Veronica: 082 804 9484 veronicard@mweb.co.za

• All invoices must reflect the correct VAT registration numbers. • Ensure that your turnover and financial statements match. • Never inflate your claim – refunds raise eyebrows and prompt SARS to hone in on you. If you are audited and what you have claimed is incorrect, it is considered a criminal offence. • Claim back the VAT paid on bad debts. • All quotes must include VAT. • Keep documentary proof of zerorating – if you do not charge VAT you can still claim for VAT on the items supplied. • Make sure SARS meets deadlines – if you do not receive your VAT refund within 21 business days of SARS receiving your VAT201 return, then you can charge SARS interest at the prescribed rate. • Charge VAT on your commission invoices. • Submit returns regardless – even if you calculate that you have no VAT liability and no VAT payment due to SARS.

BUSINESS TALK Call Ansie Nieuwenhuis on 082 923 7850 or 031 - 903 8158 to join us for breakfast to find out more about BNI. Visit our websites www.bni.co.za and www.bni.com.

Networking from A to Z I was invited to attend a BNI (Business Networking International) meeting recently to get an idea of how the organisation worked. The chapter I attended started promptly at 7.30am on a Tuesday morning, ended at 9am and included breakfast. Ninety-minute, weekly meetings are a requirement of the organisation and members need to send a “substitute” if they can’t attend. Seeing members each week was vital when it came to referring business.

• To meet a group that can increase the sales in your business. • To be the only person from your profession represented.

Drop off box at Mum’s Mail office in Durban North

Referring business, you see, is what BNI is all about. This was seen in most aspects of the meeting, including the following:

Please collect the following food items: • Tinned food items • Staple food (such as maize, samp, rice and beans) • Tea • Peanut butter • Soya • Any non-perishable food items These food items will be used to make up Gogo Bags which will be distributed to needy grannies who care for their orphaned grandchildren.

• Each member and visitor at the meeting had a 60-second (timed) slot to stand up and say what their business was about, and what business they would like other members to give them or refer to them. • As people were speaking, listeners filled in carbon copy “referral slips” to alert the speaker to potential business the members had sourced for him/her that week. One copy of the slip was given to the members/guests concerned, while another copy was placed in a “jar of joy”. The third copy was kept by the writers. The “jar of joy” slips were kept by the chapter. • At a later stage, if money changed hands in a business encounter as a result of the referrals, another slip titled “Thank you for the money” was handed out. • One member per meeting also had the opportunity to give a 10-minute talk on their business. • Members were able to put business cards in the business card holder (visitors were not) and all attendees were able to take business cards out and pass them on to prospective referred clients.

031 - 265 2000 • cindy@proappoint.co.za www.robinhoodfoundation.co.za

WHAT’S COOKING? Spring Cleaning Our Bodies National Nutrition Week (9 to 13 October) is a good time to think about getting our bodies ready for Summer. Here are some simple and sustainable ideas to lose weight and keep it off.

Saturday 29th October 8am - 1pm Hellenic Community Centre, 6 High Grove, Umgeni Park, Durban North

Exercise: The sun is out longer and the days are warmer so get down to the gym. Exercise destresses us by releasing endorphins so push through when you don’t feel like it. After a few weeks of gym, start pushing yourself hard enough that you are unable to talk while exercising.

DELITE FOODS SUGAR-FREE, LOW-FAT FOODS

Nutrition: Correct eating is not about starving ourselves. It’s about eating the right proportions of food at the right time to ensure our blood glucose levels are constant. Too much and it is stored as fat whereas too little and our bodies break down our muscles to release stored energy. With just the right amount our bodies reach peak condition and we feel great. Most people have heard sics of nutrition - five tions daily, lots of water, dominantly low GI/GL

Try our delicious TANTALIZE range of sugar-free, low-fat foods. Purchase direct via www.delitefoods.co.za, or through all major stores. Kloof Fern Agencies : 031 - 764 1952 Tricoastal Sales : 031 - 572 4402 Contact us directly at 021 - 702 0721/2 e-mail: info@delitefoods.co.za

fresh simple cooking imagine a world where meals just happen!

• hands on cooking courses for domestic employees • improve the skills of your domestic worker • easy, fun and tasty • situated in your area

Here are some other practical techniques to help keep our blood glucose constant: • Slow down – the slower food is eaten the slower it enters the bloodstream • Eat fibre – fibre slows down the digestion (shake chia seeds on every meal). • Tea – drink tea with each meal as it helps slow absorption. • Cooking – cooking raises GI/GL. Eat raw veggies/salads. • Acidify – add lemon/vinegar to your food to slow down digestion. • Protein – have protein with every meal to slow digestion. • Plan – keep low GI/GL snacks handy (goji berries, nuts, seeds).

Twinings Luxury Coffees Although the legend of Kaldi, an Ethiopian goatherd who discovered coffee in the 9th century, was only committed to writing in 1671, the recorded history of coffee actually goes back to the 13th century. Highlighting the popularity of coffee as far back as the middle ages, the first coffeehouse was opened in Istanbul in 1554. Twinings, who have been in business for over 300 years, are proud to announce the launch of their highest quality filter coffees in S.A. • Twinings Decaffeinated - this is a blend offruity Ethiopian Sidamo beans ground with full-bodied Brazilian and smooth Colombian beans. • Twinings Rich - this is a sophisticated blend of flavoursome Sumatran Lintung beans, craftily combined with the zesty taste of the Kenyan Highlands and the subtle sweetness of Brazilian beans. • Twinings Intense - this is an enlivening blend of sweet Brazilian, velvety Zambian and zingy Kenyan coffee beans which, together, create an intense, full-bodied taste that’s certain to give you the lift you crave. HOME, GARDEN & LIFESTYLE ADT’s Autodispatch – Faster, More Effective Security Responses Gone are the days of two-way radio communication. Stepping into a new technological era is ADT Security with its Autodispatch system – a first for the South African armed response industry.

Shop online for luxurious adult & kiddies’ bed linen, bed wraps, inners, mattress toppers, throws, bathrobes, newborn collection, Egyptian cotton... www.goldencomforts.co.za caroline@goldencomforts.co.za 083 782 4922

Keith Alberts, ADT’s Group Operations Director, says this system is revolutionising the way ADT operates its fleets around the country. “Autodispatch was created by the ADT team, in conjunction with monitoring software developers Oryx Systems, because we wanted to find a way to be able to dispatch our entire fleet simultaneously and automate processes in the control rooms – and Autodispatch allows us to do just this. Using the traditional two-way radio system meant that we could dispatch up to 10 cars every two minutes. Now we can dispatch our entire fleet simultaneously in a matter of seconds. The main advantage is obvious – more vehicles can be sent out to more incidents thus cutting down on critical response times,” he says.

The Autodispatch system consists of individual PDA units carried on the chest or hip of each Reaction Officer, linked via GPRS to the dispatcher and controller in ADT’s control rooms. Where previously the dispatcher would communicate with Reaction Officers via two-way radio, using the PDA unit the communication is now entirely automated, not only ensuring the dispatch instruction is received faster but also freeing up the dispatcher to deal with exceptions – emergency situations and not false alarms, for example.

The PDA units are all top-of-the-range, robust, weatherproof and use touchscreen technology, with limited typing needed. “It is an exciting time for ADT and we are already working on new ways to maximise on the technology at hand,” concludes Alberts.

HOME, GARDEN & LIFESTYLE Poor Vehicle Maintenance Motorists should be aware that insurers will not pay for the repair of mechanical problems caused by poor vehicle maintenance. “Skipping routine maintenance or services could leave motorists having to cover expensive repair costs themselves, rectifying the damage resulting from poor maintenance,” says Abrie Janse van Rensburg, Claims Manager, Alexander Forbes Insurance. Motor policies do not cover vehicle damage caused by poor maintenance. Motorists should ensure that their vehicles are maintained in a roadworthy condition. Since knowing when and how much maintenance your vehicle requires depends on the manufacturer and vehicle model “the best option is to refer to your owner’s manual for assistance, or approach your vehicle dealer or insurer to obtain proper advice,” advises Janse van Rensburg. Common mechanical failure claims regularly rejected by insurers include: snapped timing belts causing severe damage to surrounding vehicle components, and worn gearbox seals causing leaks and gear failure. “Motorists may even find themselves in a position where their insurer rejects a motor accident claim if they can prove that it resulted from poor maintenance,” warns Janse van Rensburg. Accidents caused by poor maintenance could result in motorists losing their liability for injury or damage to third party property cover. For example, any claims arising from an accident caused by a motorist using tyres with no tread in wet conditions could be rejected. Multi Blinds & Curtains

The Importance of Thoughtfulness Thoughtfulness. An easy enough concept yet not always easy to practise nowadays with the hectic lives that we lead. Recently, Green With Envy held a fantastic “ideas” morning that was incredibly well supported. Topics included décor ideas and more. One of the demonstrations given was how to wrap a fabulous gift! This really got me thinking about when last any of us took the time to actually sit and wrap a beautiful pressie – a pressie that we ourselves would be thrilled to receive!

• Interior Blinds • Exterior Blinds • Accessories • Exclusive Curtains • Wooden Rods • Laminated Flooring

Most of us are quick to explain how we simply don’t have the time. With juggling work, shopping and kids the last thing on our minds sometimes is dedicating 15 minutes to wrapping a gift! But isn’t that in essence where the concept of “thoughtfulness” comes in? Isn’t it an incredible feeling to hand over a pressie – whether it’s for a family member, friend, colleague or school teacher and have it look simply stunning! The truth is, you don’t have to spend a lot of time, money or stress on thoughtfulness. Instead, find a way for thoughtfulness to happen naturally in your daily life. With a little planning it can take as long or short as necessary.

We offer a wide range of quality blinds for home and office at prices you’ll love!

HOME, GARDEN & LIFESTYLE Organic Veggies It’s quite revolutionary. Now you can control exactly what your family is eating. No more pesticides, insecticides or fertilisers – just home-grown, natural, organic veggies all grown in the comfort of your garden. Former Engineer for Toyota S.A., Andrew Donkin, and his wife Karen came up with this effective and easy system for the urban-living, busy professional. Now, being health conscious doesn’t have to a cost a fortune in grocery bills and neither do you need to be blessed with the proverbial “green fingers” know-how. “The DIY Home Organic units are great because they are constructed to be neat, practical and manageable systems designed for people living in urban, residential suburbs with limited space, but with good natural light,” explained Andrew. This innovative veggie garden is even designed to thwart all your usual garden pests like big bugs, birds, moles and the everTHE hungry Vervet Monkey troops. Andrew suggests starting off with something small and simple that you can build onto later. Home Organic offers a wide range of veggie garden kits suitable to grow your own organic veggies and herbs, right on your doorstep. There are fully enclosed, raised container Home Organic Gardens (HOGs) and simpler, raised containers units that can be placed in convenient spots in your garden like courtyards, driveways or even balconies. Limited space is no excuse – anyone can grow their own veggies. Home Organic will provide you with your selected veggie unit, fully installed, in the area of your choice, along with the soil and an in-built irrigation system. All you need to do is connect your garden hose and presto – watch your seedlings grow! Contact: Home Organic, 079 048 4232, info@homeorganic.co.za, visit www.homeorganic.co.za.

“Perfection can be an overrated illusion. It is the scars and the imperfect nuances that can add meaning and value to life. There are moments when I look at my reflection in the mirror and think: everything is as it should be.” Lucinda Johns. In 2010, C-Sisters, a group of women who have either had cancer or work with cancer patients, produced a book called A Resource Guide for Breast Cancer in KwaZulu-Natal. The book was sponsored by Novartis, making it a free product, and later this year will be released in Zulu. Written by women for women, this sensitively written gem is aimed at providing practical information to women, specifically in KZN, who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. It covers various aspects of the patient’s experience, from screening through to recovery, and contains local numbers for Mammography Radiology practices, wig suppliers and much more. All this practical information is interspersed with personal stories from patients and family members, as well as thought-provoking quotes. The book is written as a patient would experience their illness – as a journey. While the guide is realistic – it contains a section on dealing with death – it is also hopeful. Donnée Ness, one of the contributors and also a physiotherapist, says: “Breast cancer and many other cancers are [now] considered chronic diseases that are manageable/curable if found early.” The first step towards looking after your long-term health is screening. This involves three aspects: a monthly breast self-examination, an annual clinic examination and an annual mammogram from the age of 40. HEALTH & WELLBEING Slim down NATURALLY

Hoodia Gordonii

The absolute 4phat phenomenon.

About 2000 years ago in the harsh, dry Kalahari Desert, lived a tribe called the Bushmen. Warriors of this simple tribe went on hunting trips and carried with them only the bare essentials - a handmade weapon, an ostrich egg filled with precious water and a little succulent plant called Hoodia Gordonii. While running barefoot on the hard, red Kalahari soil, they chewed on these plants to quench thirst and hunger. To this day, these indigenous people of the Kalahari chew the leaves of Hoodia Gordonii to stave off starvation and exhaustion. The appetite suppressant properties of Hoodia were only discovered by accident when in 1996 a study by the CSIR was conducted into the indigenous foods eaten by the Bushmen. They discovered that a miracle molecule in Hoodia imitates the effect glucose has on the nerve cells in the brain. The Hoodia overrides the glucose function, making it more powerful. Today, pure Hoodia succulents are very rare and protected by the national conservation laws in South Africa and Namibia. They can only be collected or grown with a permit which makes the purchase of Hoodia expensive – but worth every cent. Also, on all Hoodia that is legally harvested, royalties are paid over to the Bushmen.

• ZERO chemicals - ZERO harmful substances • Suppress appetite with DCD Hoodia Gordonii • Burn calories with Capsicum Chilli extract • Enhance metabolism with Green Tea extract • Up to 8100% stronger and purer than tested “diet” products in the market • Proven by local universities

HEALTH & WELLBEING SPECIALIST DERMATOLOGIST Dr Mohamed F. Sacoor

An Update on Melanoma Melanoma is a malignant cancer of melanocytes. Melanocytes are cells that produce the dark pigment, melanin, which is responsible for the colour of the skin. Melanomas predominantly occur in skin but can also be found in other parts of the body that contain melanocytes, e.g. the bowel and the eye. Melanoma is less common than other skin cancers. However, it is much more dangerous and causes 75% of deaths related to skin cancer. It occurs more frequently in women than in men and is particularly common among Caucasians living in sunny climates. All cancers are caused by damage to the DNA inside cells. This damage can be inherited in the form of genetic mutations, but in most cases it builds up over a person’s lifetime and is caused by factors in their environment. DNA damage causes the cell to grow out of control, leading to a tumour. Melanoma is usually caused by damage from UV light from the sun, but UV light from sunbeds can also contribute to the disease. While melanomas usually grow from existing moles they can grow spontaneously.

Look out for the following ABCDE signs of melanoma:

Mole screening using dermoscopy is a modern day non-invasive diagnostic tool that helps dermatologists analyse a pigmented lesion and find features that are not visible to the naked eye. Detection of a tiny spot can save a life. Regular screening of your moles by a dermatologist can improve your chances of prevention or early detection of melanomas.

HEALTH & WELLBEING GNLD Full Motion provides just what the body needs:

Bone & Joint Health Tips Vitamin D can save your hips! Researchers in Scotland reported in the July 2005 issue of the journal Current Medical Research and Opinion that in essentially every (97.8%) hip fracture case they investigated (548), the patients were deficient, often severely, in vitamin D. In about 25% of the subjects, vitamin D levels were too low to detect accurately. In their report, the researchers concluded that vitamin D represents a correctable risk factor for bone fragility as we age, particularly as it relates to the risk of hip fracture.

• The pure, ‘biologically functional’ cartilage building block, Glucosamine • The natural, comfort-boosting power of Herbal Comfort Complex • The structurally critical elements in Regenerative Mineral Complex • Our bioavailability advantage For more about this amazing joint regeneration and repair product, talk to your GNLD Distributors Dennis & Lesley Banks on 031 - 564 4200 or 083 654 2840

DR ROGER POWELL D.C.(USA)

Your “creaking” joints may be a sign you’re rusting. Researchers at the Duke University Medical Centre have been tracking down free radicals as accomplices in the biological processes that rob us of joint health. In their report they pointed out that vitamin C can not only slow the progression of bone deterioration by blocking free radical damage, but it also stimulates collagen synthesis, an important aspect of cartilage renewal.

As a result of neck injuries, however slight, you may well be suffering from SINUS, HEADACHES, MIGRAINES, NECK & ARM PAIN, WEIGHT GAIN, LOW RESISTANCE, ANXIETY, LOSS OF VITALITY & LIBIDO, DEPRESSION, IRRITABILITY, RHEUMATISM AND INSOMNIA as well as many other symptoms or sicknesses related to NEUROLOGIC or VASCULAR DEFICITS. The root of your problem will most likely be in your lower neck, in the area of C5/C6 and labelled SPONDYLOSIS or LOSS OF LORDOSIS.

Omega-3s are good for bones and good for joints. The benefits of omega-3 fatty acids for those with discomfort have been well established for years. Omega-3s support the correct balance of the inflammation/anti-inflammation systems in the body. Now new evidence says it’s good for bones too. In a recent presentation to the World Health Organisation, Purdue University Professor Bruce Watkins stated: “Our lab and others have shown that omega-3 fatty acids help promote bone formation.”

Loss of Lordosis = Sickness

Normal Lordosis = Wellness

HEALTH & WELLBEING Renal Failure and Organ Donation Nobody ever foresees a health setback. Rachal Singh had a rude awakening when she was diagnosed with pregnancy-induced hypertension and soon thereafter lost her firstborn and started dialysis due to CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease). Because she has no kidneys, she has been on dialysis for a total of ten years, three times per week. The treatment robs Rachal, who is a doctor, of 60 productive hours monthly. Dialysis replaces the function of the kidneys with another source of filtering. There are two types of filtering - haemodialysis and CAPD (Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal dialysis). Haemodialysis is done on-site and lasts up to five hours, two or three times a week, at a medical facility. CAPD offers the freedom to dialyse in your own environment but on a daily basis, using a different technology. Symptoms of kidney disease are: cloudy or reddish urine; urinating more or less often; pain or burning when urinating; frequent headaches or tiredness; itchiness or rash on body or face; swollen face, hands or feet; darkening skin colour; nausea or loss of appetite; pain in the back or side; muscle cramps. Kidney failure is life threatening unless treated. The Organ Donor Foundation aims to educate and inform the public about the life-saving benefits of organ transplantation and the urgent need for people to register as organ donors. While alive, you can donate a kidney, part of a liver, blood, tissues and bone marrow. If you would like to become an organ donor contact the Organ Donor Foundation, toll free on 0800 22 66 11 or register online at www.odf.org.za. DO YOU SUFFER FROM

BREAST CANCER? TALK TO A SURVIVOR!

Scoliosis is the abnormal sidewaysbending of the spine to an extent of greater than 10°.

WE ARE HERE AS A SUPPORT FOR YOU REACH FOR RECOVERY BREAST CANCER SUPPORT GROUP

There are two types: • Non-rigid or non-structural. This type is usually due to posture (e.g. muscle imbalance) or as a compensation (e.g. because of leg length inequality). • Rigid or structural. This type is far more complex as it entails a variety of causes. These can include: no apparent reason (idiopathic), trauma, cancerous growths involving the vertebrae, congenital abnormalities or neuromuscular disorders to list a few.

WE CARE

Non-judgemental service which offers alternatives

Idiopathic structural scoliosis can begin as young as three years of age but more commonly begins at older than 10. Other types of scoliosis can begin later in life depending on the cause, e.g. as a result of poor core stability and muscle imbalance from poor posture. If preventative measures are not put in place scoliosis can be degenerative, particularly in children who are still growing. If the cause is due to another disorder, as long as this is monitored and treated, the scoliosis should not progress.

Join us for a Women’s Wellness morning for discussions on female cancers...

Signs of scoliosis include: back pain, abnormal gait, compromised functioning of the heart and lungs if it occurs in the thoracic region affecting the ribs, and a visible curving of the spine. The most accurate diagnosis method is through x-rays and measurement of angles. The latter is important for monitoring further changes. Treatment is determined by the cause but can vary from surgery, manipulation, exercises and stretches, treatment of other causes (e.g. vertebral cancers) and heel lifts for the short leg. FASHION & BEAUTY Been There, Done That... Nail Therapy I must confess my nail-care regime usually consists mainly of damage control and the odd bout of filing or gnawing. That’s why I was utterly delighted when I recently became the proud owner of a gorgeous set of gel nails (that still allowed me to get my hands dirty... so to speak). Chantelle Prince from Nail Therapy, in Umhlanga Rocks Drive, showed me just how easy it is to have beautiful nails every day with her excellent range of Nail Therapy products. The Academy offers a number of courses that will transform you into a master nail technician and, once you’ve completed a course of this standard, you will be well equipped to turn your new skill into a profitable business. Exceptionally affordable DIY kits are now available and include absolutely everything you will need to apply tips, acrylic and gel nails, including a UV lamp and full instructions. More stock can be ordered at wholesale prices. I was particularly impressed with the all-new Gel-Polish which is applied like a nail polish but sets like a gel to give you a flawless, high-gloss finish that stays perfect for weeks! It’s fabulous! It can also be applied over acrylic/gel overlays.

FASHION & BEAUTY Time to Cleanse Just like washing your car or cleaning your house, the human body needs cleaning. Our bodies naturally create toxins as a by-product of metabolism. Add stress, poor exercise habits, pollution, unhealthy eating and the detoxification organ, the liver, is completely overloaded working hard to eliminate waste. Give your body a chance to be cleansed from the inside out, to rest from daily diets, to eliminate accumulated toxins and to rebalance biochemical processes. By eliminating toxins and feeding your body with healthy nutrients, you can slow down the ageing process and increase the body’s ongoing capacity to detoxify and maintain optimum health. The aim of a detox is to metabolise and eliminate toxins in the body, rest the organs, stimulate the liver, improve circulation and refuel the body with healthy nutrients. As a result your metabolism becomes more efficient. Even if your diet is good, a detox can revitalise your system. Detox by following a programme specific to your individual needs, whether through diet, supplements or lifestyle practices. Try EarthnLove’s Mustard Bath Soak and Detox containing mustard seed, pink Himalayan rock salt and essential oils. These ingredients are stimulating, warming and cleansing. They help to release toxins and promote detoxification. Also good is EarthnLove’s Rejuvenating Bath Soak and Detox containing colloidal oatmeal, pink Himalayan rock salt and essential oils effective for Detox and tissue regeneration. FASHION & BEAUTY Victorian Garden – A History Lindsay Salthouse’s story begins during the 1950s when she spent her early years living in the Sudan with her parents who were cotton farmers. Fascinated by the Sudanese women making use of different trees, shrubs, herbs and grasses for medicinal use and using mud from the River Nile mixed with oil to protect and heal their skins and hair and keep them smooth, she would sit and watch as the women would expertly source, cut, grind and boil various herbs and plants. She also watched them use the raw cotton seeds for exfoliating hard, rough skin and for making a kind of face mask using the river mud and cotton oil which they extracted from the kernel of the cotton seed. Back in England, Lindsay grew up spending time in her parents’ large herb gardens on their country estate. Her great-grandmother was a Victorian herbalist famous for her herbal lotions and bath oils, skin creams and healing oils. When she died in 1897 Lindsay’s family inherited two big, gold bound diaries which gave a fascinating insight into daily life, work in her herb gardens and her husband’s travels to India to bring back Indian herbs, spices, beautiful lace, tobacco and Indian teas. Lindsay went on to become an aromatherapist and herbalist and has always had a great interest in nutrition and natural medicine and decided to handcraft some of the beauty care products made by her great-grandmother, here in South Africa. The products proved an instant hit. Today there are four unique product collections, proudly “South African made” and exported globally.

FASHION & BEAUTY Treat Your Hair to La Brasilian Imagine waking up every morning to smooth, shiny, soft hair that is easy to manage and has no frizz? Well, no longer do we have to imagine this, as it can so easily be achieved with a visit to Shellie Olivier at Scott & Wells Salon in La Lucia Mall. On arrival at Scott & Wells, Shellie explained the process to me, before taking me through to the basin to have my hair washed. La Brasilian is a keratin treatment with collagen. They shampooed my hair once, then shampooed it again and left the shampoo on for a further five minutes. Once my hair was rinsed, Shellie dried my hair (about 80% dry) and applied the La Brasilian treatment which she left in my hair. I was then ready to leave the salon. It was so easy and simple, it took about an hour (this does depend on the length of your hair). Thereafter, with strict instructions from Shellie, I was not allowed to wash my hair for three days. Shellie offers a complimentary blow wave (I went on day three) so that she can check that it has taken correctly and that she is happy with the outcome. This treatment will last three to five months - YAY! With Summer on its way, it’s an ideal treatment to do now. It is highly recommended that you purchase the La Brasilian Shampoo and Conditioner as part of the maintenance programme. The treatment for my length hair (short) cost R1500 and the shampoo and conditioner are R290 each. As Oprah says, “What I know for sure” is that I’ll be back for more treatments. FASHION & BEAUTY Been There, Done That... Being told that you have been wearing the incorrect size bra is quite a deflating experience, but when it’s Liza Clifford doing the telling, it’s easier to swallow – this woman knows her stuff! Liza came to the Mum’s Mail offices a few weeks ago to determine my bra size, as she suspected all along that my bra was too big for me – what a pleasure this was! No going to Woolies to stand around, nervously trying to catch the fitting room attendant’s eye to ask her to measure you (it is a rather intimate experience, best not shared in a public changeroom). After spending some time trying on various styles and sizes of bras, this is what Liza discovered about MY bra size, which I received as a full page ‘report’: “Most women in South Africa wear the incorrect bra size and unfortunately you are no exception. This is however not your fault as I feel the vast selection of sizes needed is just not available in S.A. Consider that in the UK (where I import from) most bands (28 - 56) have 15 cups. In your case, like most, your band is far too big for you. A 38, is a gross overcompensation for what you need in a cup and this is what happens… when your fitter can’t find the correct cup (in your case a D or DD), they go up in the band until they can find a cup that is suitable. This compromises on support unfortunately. The tighter the band the better the lift, and the more supported you feel. Now most ladies squeal at this prospect, however once you try this concept you will never go back to a flappy bra. 80 - 100% of your support comes from your band - that is the part that goes around your middle. I have assessed you as a 34 D - DD, once you fit into these bras you will be lifted and will not need padding to give you the full breast you require. When your band is tight enough you are able to scoop all the bits into the cup without it going back to where it started (this includes the dreaded back fat). You will also not have a bra that moves, resulting in less irritation. Remember that a new bra will be uncomfortable, so you need to wear it in, like a good pair of well fitted jeans. These are symptoms of an ill fitting bra: • Your band rides up your back - band too big. • Your straps fall off - band is too big (no amount of tightening is going to fix this). • Breasts fall out the bottom • Back fat - it should be in your cup, not squashing out the back - band is too big. • Breasts fall out of your bra - cups are too small (the dreaded double boob). I always tell ladies to go for a fitting rather than guess your size, it’s the best investment you will ever make and, ironically, husbands never complain about that bill! I am so looking forward to delivering your range of supportwear!” Review by Alice Leah for Mum’s Mail – watch this space, for ‘before’ and ‘after’ pics of Alice in Liza’s new bras next month!

PREGNANCY & BABIES Sore Nipples While Breastfeeding One of the most common challenges new mums experience while breastfeeding is sore nipples. It can make the most motivated mum want to reconsider breastfeeding, but there are things that can be done so don’t give up! • Try to find the cause of the pain. Look at your nipples after a feed. They “tell a story”. One of the most common reasons for sore nipples is an incorrect latch. Don’t just “grin and bear” it! If your nipples look “flattened” or have a line or ridge going through the centre or to one side, it means baby is not on deeply enough and may be positioned too far over to one or other side. • If your nipples got sore right from day one, it is probably a latching problem and you may need help latching baby properly. • If you only started experiencing pain when your mature milk came in, around day three or four, it’s probably because your breasts are too full/engorged and baby can’t latch deeply. Hand express a little milk before feeds or form a small circle with your forefinger and thumb and gently but firmly press into the areola around your nipples for one to three minutes to move the extra cellular fluid away from around the nipples so that baby can latch properly. • A tongue-tied baby may not be able to extend the tongue out far enough to cup the breast properly, causing pain. • If you or baby have been on antibiotics, or you had thrush during pregnancy, you may have thrush on your nipples. Ensure the thrush is treated. Breastfeeding should not be painful. Get help and enjoy your baby. Source: Yulanda Ridge, IBCLC Certified Lactation Consultant, 033 – 396 1733,082 725 5043.

• Accept that you will put on weight and embrace your newfound curves! • Tights are a pregnant woman’s “little black dress” as they are stretchy, comfortable and can be worn in any season. • If you are a “heels girl” then wedges are a great transition as they will still give you the height but are far more comfortable. • As your bump grows the hem on your top will get shorter and shorter. Exposing skin when you are pregnant is never appropriate. • The number one investment for any pregnant mum is well fitting, confidence-boosting underwear. You need to feel sexy from the inside out. Your bra size will inevitably change a few times from the start of your pregnancy right up until you stop breastfeeding, so ensure that your underwear accommodates the changes. • Wearing bold, overwhelming patterns when you are heavily pregnant will only enhance your fuller figure and draw attention to the areas that you would prefer to ignore. Stick to solid, neutral colours and use bright and bold accessories to lift your outfit. • Try to avoid spending too much on a new wardrobe when you are pregnant as the chances of you wanting to revisit those clothes after the birth are very slim! Try to incorporate existing items in your wardrobe and just buy the following: one pair of pants, a skirt, a jacket, a dress, a tunic top (stick to basic colours like black, grey and white) and maternity jeans (in either bootleg, slight flare or skinny leg).

KIDS’ CORNER Therapeutic Reflexology for Children Have you considered that your children may suffer from stress? If so, then perhaps it’s time to take them for a therapeutic reflexology treatment.TomThumb, a division of ForestRed Balanced Therapies, endeavours to assist infants, toddlers and children who may be convalescing after an illness or injury or are suffering from stress. The treatment is a deep form of stimulation of the various reflex points on the feet, is non-invasive and is applied in a secure, warm and comfortable environment. Whilst the main meridians are found on the feet, stimulation according to a particular congestion may also be applied to both the hands and ears. Depending on the method in which a therapist has been trained, treatment is then applied in a particular sequence and method. The objective is to help the body along naturally to regain wellness and balance. The body is a highly organised and complex organ and energy system. Meridian or energy pathways travel through the organ systems. When a particular event occurs in the patient’s life such as trauma, illness, accident or operation or when the body is under severe stress, specific congestions may begin to manifest along any of these particular meridian pathways which may have been impacted. Manifestations can include low immunity, migraines and headaches, fatigue, various body aches, irregular cycles, irritability and mood swings. The number of treatments required depends largely on the actual condition, the patient’s level of wellbeing and how long the patient has had the condition. Contact: 031 – 563 1177, 083 628 3938, TomThumb Balanced Therapies, Medigate Centre, Umhlanga. 3 kids will each qualify for 1 complimentary session for children. Visit www.mumsmail.com to enter.

Constipation in Children How do I know if my child is constipated? Generally, if they have fewer than three bowel movements per week, have a history of passing hard, dry and large stools and the stools are hard to pass, cause severe pain and may result in bleeding. If the problem exceeds two weeks, it is chronic constipation.

Get your Christmas orders in now to avoid disappointment! Get 10% off all orders until the end of November! Contact Nikki Moore on 083 384 4873 or nikkimoore100@gmail.com or www.dukeandd.co.za

Causes of constipation:

Expressions Photography

Constipation is likely to occur if there are insufficient fluids and fibre in the diet and if the diet is high in fat and refined sugars. With infants, it may occur when switching baby from breastmilk to formula, and during weaning from baby food to solid food. It may also occur after illness or taking certain medications. Young children often ignore the urge to pass a stool to avoid interrupting play. They may also be afraid to ask a teacher for permission to leave the classroom. When the urge to defecate is ignored, stool builds up in the larger intestine, causing it to become larger and harder. The passage of this stool results in pain, and a vicious cycle ensues.

The Ultimate Clothing Marker! Tired of spending hours ironing or sewing labels on your child’s clothing? Well, now it’s as easy as a stamp! Only R200!

Treatment:

• Suitable for most fabrics • Washable • Self-inking • Personalised (e.g. Name and Contact No.)

• Increase fluid intake. Add prune or apricot juice to cereal. • Increase fibre and decrease fat and refined sugars. • Bowel habit training - very important. Teach children to go to a bathroom when they first feel the urge to defecate. Try to establish a routine by asking your child to sit on the toilet for at least 10 minutes, at the same time, everyday, preferably after a meal. Ensure they can place their feet firmly on the floor while sitting on the toilet. • Medication - there are many laxatives available on the market. Speak to your GP or paediatrician for advice.

EDUCATION & SCHOOLING A Good Breakfast is Vital for a Sporty Child

MONTESSORI @ UMHLANGA PRE - SCHOOL & AFTERCARE Tel: 031 - 572 5122 • Cell: 084 400 5229 e-mail: kavita@montessoriumhlanga.co.za www.montessoriumhlanga.co.za

It’s been said countless times before but it simply is the truth - breakfast is the most important meal of the day, especially for an active sporty child. A child’s performance both in the classroom and sporting arena is directly affected by the foods they eat regularly, particularly breakfast. For most children who consume this essential start to the day, breakfast is usually eaten 10 to 12 hours after the previous night’s dinner and hence is vital in kick-starting their metabolism and giving them the energy needed to perform at their best through the day. The majority of breakfast eaters are significantly more productive, have improved concentration and better regulated blood sugar levels (which then reduces how much fat the body stores unnecessarily) than those who aren’t. These children also tend to grow at age-appropriate rates and don’t often experience headaches, dizziness, irritability or food cravings.

As a child’s stomach is the size of their fist, they should eat small meals often and an ideal breakfast should contain carbohydrate (e.g. wholegrain bread, cereal, oats), fruit, protein (e.g. yoghurt, milk, cheese, beans, egg, peanut butter) and appropriate fat content (e.g. butter/margarine on toast). Some breakfast ideas for sporty children include: • Fruit salad with low-fat yoghurt (which could also be made into a smoothie). • Baked beans on toast with a little grated cheese. • Scrambled eggs on toast with lightly cooked tomato.

PRE-SCHOOL AND BABY CARE

Also, always remember a child learns far more from the example of their parents than what they are told. As a parent, make a concerted effort to eat breakfast with your children daily and help instil a habit that will dramatically aid in their success both in the classroom and on the sports field.

Norma’s day begins in the classroom at 6.30am and doesn’t stop (even at tea break!) while the children are at school. After school work includes marking, research and planning, before leaving for home around 4.30pm. Contributing towards a set of textbooks this year in particular also meant evening, weekend and holiday work. Attending various courses, learning constantly evolving teaching methods and adapting to today’s children (and parents) have all kept Norma at the top, and in fact ahead, of her game.

A pre-school run on the internationally renowned Montessori teaching methods and principles. Give your child the best possible start in life by establishing a sound educational foundation, within a nurturing and fun oriented environment.

Years of working with young children have helped Norma become very adaptable, creative, able to think on her feet, spontaneous, organised, patient and empathetic. “I’ve learnt to read children, to understand their personalities and to treat them as individuals,” said Norma. And – bonus - being in touch with children has kept this 56 year old mother of three young: “Yes, I feel much younger than I am,” she laughed. So, parents, let’s acknowledge the dedication and hard work of teachers like Norma Nel; why not send a little note of appreciation to your child’s teacher this Teacher’s Day, 5 October? Norma Nel has been teaching for 35 years. She has shaped many young lives during that time, including the children (and soon grandchildren) of past pupils, and has in turn been shaped by her job. You see, for Norma, who is H.O.D. of Grade 1 at Chelsea Prep, teaching is not just a job. It’s a calling. This attitude can be seen in how she structures her day, in how she constantly tries to improve her teaching methods, and in her unwavering focus on doing the best she can for her learners.

Is Your Child Gifted? Karen Smith has worked at pre-schools for 15 years and has realised that a “clever” child or “above average child” is not necessarily gifted. She believes that some children have the potential for giftedness but due to cultural or educational disadvantages, might not develop their potential to the fullest. Gifted children often don’t fit well into “average” settings. Professor Kokot (Educational Psychologist at Unisa and President of the National Association for Gifted and Talented Children in South Africa) says we need to spot the gifted potential in a child as early as possible so that the child can be given the educational environment needed to nurture their gift and prevent negative signs from appearing.

To identify the possible talents of children, Oxford Pre-school looks for signs of high potential, such as curiosity, interest in learning, early vocabulary development and good memory. They also introduce different developmental methods, one being the Brain Gym Programme. This special programme not only helps to develop gross and fine-motor co-ordination of the children, but also enhances learning. The programme supports the learner in becoming neurologically prepared to benefit from his learning environment. To implement these methods the school works together with an expert in Special Education (Exceptional Children). In order to realise children’s potential, Oxford Pre-school chooses a special theme to incorporate different skills such as active, engaged learning, rote learning, critical and creative thinking. The school also realises the importance of having small classes (maximum 15 children) so that children can be encouraged to discuss, debate and take a more active role in the learning experience.

AD/HD or CAPD?

(Speech-Language Therapists and Audiologist)

Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) is most frequently confused with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD). This is because in many ways they tend to mimic one another. CAPD Children Characteristics: • Can focus on a task for an extended period of time but cannot complete it as they struggle to understand a complex instruction or listen in a difficult listening environment. • Benefit is obtained by reducing background noise and repeating or rephrasing instructions. • Difficulty completing reading comprehensions as struggle to extract meaning from a text. • Not impulsive - struggle to answer questions as have difficulty identifying what the question actually requires of them, as well as extracting the answer from a text. • Poor sequencing skills. • Difficulty recalling auditory presented information. • Difficulty recognising the differences between sounds, especially sounds that are very similar e.g. f/v, s/z. • Treated by an audiologist and/or speech therapist with therapy.

Proudly introduce the addition of a full range of paediatric audiological services to existing speech & language therapy services, especially a specialised approach in the diagnosis and treatment of Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD)

ADD/HD Children Characteristics: • Able to understand oral and written information, but struggle to complete these tasks sufficiently as they struggle to remain focused on them for an extended period of time. • Little benefit is obtained by repeating the given instruction or information. • Difficulty in reading comprehensions as they generally take quite some time to complete as the child is easily distracted. • Impulsive. • Poor organisational skills. • Tendency to lose or forget things. • Emotional difficulties e.g. defiance, bad temper and stubbornness. • Don’t struggle to discriminate between sounds. • Treated by a paediatrician and/or psychologist, usually with medication and/or behavioural therapy.

BALLOONS JUST 4 U

FANTASTIC FAUCET

• Helium Balloons • Balloon Arches • Balloon Centrepieces • Balloon Backgrounds • Balloon Columns • Balloon Printing • Message Balloons

Use What? Do What?

• Two paper cups • Three sheets of A4 paper • A pair of scissors • Sticky tape • A ballpoint pen • 5c coin • Sand

• Take a paper cup and draw a circle shape on the side of the cup. This should be roughly the size of a 50c coin. • Carefully pierce a hole in the centre of the circle with your pen then use the scissors to cut out the circle. • Take the second cup and place it inside your first cup. Draw around the inside of the hole you have cut out. • Separate the cups and cut out the circle you have drawn on the second cup. • Take a piece of paper and fold into a long bar. Stick it across the width of the cup with some tape. • Repeat with the second piece of paper. These bars will make the handle for your tap. • Cross one bar across the middle of the other to form a cross shape. Stick them together using tape. • Now you’ve made your tap handle you need to attach it to the inside of your tap. Place it across the top of your first cup and stick it down with tape. • To make the nozzle of the tap take another piece of paper and roll it into a tube and stick it with tape. This should be wider than the hole you cut on the side of the cup. Cut the tube in half (along the length). • Make tabs around one end by carefully cutting small snips all the way round the tube. • Fold back the tabs and place the nozzle in the hole on the second cup. Use tape to stick down the tabs. • Put the first cup inside the second cup. Rotate the handle so the holes are not lined up and the tap is closed. • Fill the tap with sand, place over a bowl and turn the handle. As the hole opens, watch as sand pours out of your tap!

So What?

Directions

Old Ma in R Rd oad iea n w a Ho D Hy llan d e Ave dP lac e

We use taps every day, whether we are doing dishes, watering the garden or simply having a bath. Taps are very important to our everyday lives because they supply us with water, although, we never stop to think just how they work. By making our very own fantastic faucet in this workshop we get to see how water is able to flow through our taps and importantly how we are able to control this water flow by opening and closing our tap (turning the handle). In order for our “water” (lentils) to flow we needed to turn the handle so that the 2 holes in our cups were aligned. This complete alignment allows heavy flow of our lentils. Partial alignment of the holes allows light/little flow of our lentils. No alignment between the 2 holes in our cups meant that our tap was closed and no lentils are allowed to flow. Our taps at home work the same way except they have a rubber washer between the water pipe and the screw in the tap. This stops the tap from leaking and helps to control the flow of water from the tap. The very first forms of taps or valves were invented by the Early Egyptians and Greeks to control water flow and prevent flooding wherever there was a water line present. This idea sparked the invention of the modern tap in 1870 by a man called J.H Davis.

WHAT TO DO/WHERE TO STAY Been There, Done That... Time away with my family is a rare pleasure, so when the Elephant Lake Hotel in St Lucia invited us to come stay for the weekend, we leapt at the opportunity for some quality time together. It took just over two hours to get there from Durban - what a bonus! The hotel has a three star grading and offers 56 en-suite, air-conditioned rooms, all with a westerly view across the St Lucia Estuary. All rooms are equipped with DSTV, tea/coffee facilities, electronic safes, a hair dryer and basic bathroom amenities. The ground level of the hotel offers 25 rooms, with private patios leading to the pool, restaurant, hotel lounge and reception area. The upper level has 31 rooms all with private balconies, and a spacious lounge bar that leads out to the hotel’s estuary viewing deck. Our second floor rooms were inter-leading, each with their own bathrooms and TV, which the kids loved! The resident female hippo and baby came onto the hotel lawn to graze, and with a view from our second floor balcony, we were literally positioned overhead – what amazing photo ops! This was a definite highlight. There is so much to do in and around St Lucia, and the hotel staff are most helpful and willing to assist you with bookings for game drives, whale watching, town tours, turtle tours, a boat cruise or kayaking on the St Lucia Estuary, guided or self guided walking trails, snorkelling at Cape Vidal, deep sea fishing, fly fishing, night drives, marine mammal experiences, a visit to a Zulu cultural village, birding, a visit to the crocodile centre, shopping at the arts and crafts stalls or a round of golf. The weather was a little too fresh for a visit to one of the relatively unspoilt beaches, so a swim in the ocean was not on the cards. Instead we explored the shops and croc centre, as well as enjoying a game drive. Much of our time was spent in the upstairs lounge bar, where we enjoyed delicious pub fare, served by very friendly and efficient staff.

Stuck for ideas of what to do with the kids?

If you’re looking for a no-frills hotel, offering the basics at a fair price, the Elephant Lake Hotel is a good choice. Call 035 – 590 1001 or e-mail info@elephantlake.co.za for reservations or more information or visit www.elephantlakestlucia.co.za.

Come to our Clay & Craft Café, let your kids choose their own piece of bisque to paint from hundreds of options available. Or pop in without the kids for some “me time” and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and indulge in a slice of cake, while you paint your bisque masterpiece.

WHAT TO DO/WHERE TO STAY Bra and Panty Drive KZN Ambassadors for PinkDrive, Mr and Mrs Mzantsi KZN, Dario and Lisa Campos, have begun a Bra and Panty Campaign run by smartART Group. The project aims to collect new and second-hand bras in good condition, as well as new panties, to hand out to underprivileged women and young girls. With Breast Cancer Awareness Month falling in October, the campaign plans to enter its bra collection into the Guinness World Book of Records.

PinkDrive is a community “upliftment campaign, started by NPO Cause Marketing Fundraisers. As the Bra and Panty Drive is an initiative brought alive by Dario and Lisa Campos, PinkDrive is assisting in this project by providing pamphlets of information on breast awareness examinations and supplying bra and panty collections. PinkDrive has two trucks that contain the mobile mammography and mobile educational units. In addition PinkDrive does corporate wellness days in the private sector which helps to sustain the project. Corporates that have offered their support for this specific drive include: ABSA staff, Hereford staff, Liberty staff and Woolworths staff. The public can help by donating bras, panties and toiletries. Clothing and lingerie companies are also invited to come on board.

WHAT TO DO/WHERE TO STAY Beat-Route Beat-Route is Durban’s very own traditional acoustic swing jazz quartet featuring front man Daniel Sheldon (trumpet/percussion), the inimitable Gerald Sloan (guitar), Logan Byrne (upright bass) and Tony Muirhead (drums). Beat-Route features regularly on local calendar events as the band is perfectly suited to sophisticated cocktail and gala-dinner-type events - events at which a polite, classy and certainly seductive backdrop for conversation and networking without strain is required. The band is regularly seen at weddings, fairs, parties and restaurants, acting as the perfect starter to any event and laying the foundation for a D.J. to take the party to the next level. With more than two hundred weddings and events to Beat-Route’s credit this experienced swing ensemble is the perfect musical note for any function. When called to entertain guests on that special day, Beat-Route will take care of the atmosphere, from the ceremony to the first dance and sometimes beyond using their extensive and versatile repertoire of jazz and popular standards and flawlessly professional presentation. Their repertoire is largely mainstream jazz standard with a few recognisable popular tunes played within the jazz idiom, as well as a few original compositions by Gerald Sloan. Music sets the mood, transforming any event into a memorable and extravagant occasion; with a good live band the effect is multiplied tenfold. Catch Beat-Route at Market Restaurant (Morningside, above Greyville race course) every Friday 12.30pm to 2.30pm. Visit www.beat-route. co.za.

DAD’S MAIL The Expectant Dad’s Guide to the Hospital Bag There is lots of literature out there about what mums should be thinking about, planning and preparing for when they go into labour, but there isn’t much out there for dads. If you’re planning on having your baby in a hospital, here are some things that an expectant dad should plan on having in the labour bag: • Toothpaste, gum and mouthwash - when that baby is born there are going to be lots of hugs and kisses at the hospital. With all the emotion we often forget about hygiene. But mum’s sense of smell is ridiculously heightened during pregnancy and she won’t react well to your dragon breath. • Camera, video camera (and chargers) - you might regret not documenting as much as you can. Whatever your comfort level, you’ll appreciate having those early moments of your child’s life documented. • Cell phone (and charger) - you’ll want to obviously call relatives and friends to let them know the new bundle has arrived. Your cell can also double as a gaming device for those sleepless overnights at the hospital. • Your favourite T-shirt - having a healthy baby is such a fantastic experience and so many pictures get snapped. Make sure you are representing yourself well in those pictures. • Pillow - hospitals have come a long way but, chances are, that hospital bed/couch isn’t going to be comfortable. You’re only going to get a few minutes of sleep those first couple nights anyway. Make them count. • Change of underwear - don’t let your hygiene get lost in the emotion. • A book. • A gift for mum – don’t forget this one - make sure mum is showered with gifts when she leaves the hospital. DAD’S MAIL Stent Saves a Life

Need Branded Gifts or Prizes for a Golf Day or Client Function? Year End Gifts for Clients?

Trevor Beaumont took his dog for a walk as he usually did, when, just 100 metres after setting out, he began to feel unwell. His pulse raced and he began perspiring. After settling his pulse and returning home Trevor went straight to the doctor. What followed were tests, a referral to a cardiologist and a diagnosis of heart problems. Trevor was booked into hospital within a few days to have a stent (a tiny tube) inserted into his heart’s main artery. The artery, you see, had become severely reduced in two places meaning that the blood was struggling to get through. If the operation was not done Trevor would undoubtedly have had a heart attack.

Come & join us for an evening with Durban’s very own Big Band at the Italian Club for a limited season during the month of October. Martin Sigamoney has drawn on Durban’s finest to put together an 11 piece live band, including a smoking hot brass section.

Although life saving, the stent operation kept Trevor in hospital for only one night and enabled him to continue his normal activities almost immediately. “Under a local anaesthetic only, I watched as doctors introduced dye into the blood stream, then entered a camera through the thigh and moved it right up to the heart. Then, they inserted the stent and pushed it into the artery while the heart was beating! I could see it all on a screen,” said Trevor.

Dates: 20 - 23 October at 8pm and Sun 23 at 3pm Lunchtime Show (extra R80 for Italian Club Lunch before the show) Cost: R80 per ticket, BYO picnic/snacks or Italian menu, cash bar (regret no credit cards)

Although Trevor had changed to a healthy eating plan six years before the operation, poor eating habits earlier on in life had already caused the damage. It was therefore vital for men to go for health checkups believed Trevor. “Men don’t go for annual medical checkups – they should,” he said. “If I had gone for checkups the problem may have been picked up earlier.”

“Poor eating habits visit again later in life.” Trevor Beaumont

DAD’S MAIL Cyberbullying Tips Courtesy of Norton Recently, there’s been a growing chorus of stories addressing the issue of cyberbullying and how new technologies are providing new platforms for bullies to follow children from the playground to their computers and even phones. While bullying is often viewed as “just part of growing up”, cyberbullying adds a new dimension to the problem; it is fallout from the web that today’s parents never saw coming. Social networking sites have become a popular platform for youth to stay connected. Although these sites have many positive benefits, some tweens and teens are using these channels as weapons to facilitate cyberbullying. A new study from Norton Canada found that girls are more often involved in cyberbullying incidents than boys. In fact, 86% of parents revealed their daughters were victims of cyberbullies, compared to 55% of sons. Top Tips for Protecting your Family Online: • Use Internet security software on all computers. • Don’t open suspicious e-mails or click unknown links. • Keep the computer and cell phones visible whenever possible. • Avoid using file-sharing software programmes. • Be vigilant on public computers or WiFi networks. • Backup your computer. • Establish rules for using the Internet. • Understand social networking – join and use privacy and security settings. • Help your children keep their personal information protected. • Create complex and unique passwords and keep them private. • Use parental control software and frequently check your online computer’s Internet history. • Spend time with your children online and have “The Talk” regularly. • Teach your children to tell a parent, teacher, or trusted adult if they feel uncomfortable about anything they’ve seen on a computer.
