No rest for the wicked… or is there?

After a very busy March, which was spent finalising plans for the 4th Annual Mum’s Mail Ladies ‘Vintage’ Breakfast in association with The Sunflower Fund, and which I’m pleased to announce was a HUGE success (more details can be found on our double page feature), it was then followed by an equally busy but not quite so stressful April although there is ALWAYS a deadline lurking around the corner that I can’t seem to run away from..! My family and I have been lucky enough to go camping not once but 3 times during the month of April, thanks to all the public holidays! We have visited the beautiful ‘Silver Streams’ resort in Underberg and spent the Easter break at ‘Bazley Beach Caravan Resort’ near Scottburgh, where the kids made new friends almost immediately, I won R700 on the Bingo and we all had a fantastic and super chilled time. Sitting out in the evening with a glass of wine by an open fire is wonderful, especially now that the weather is cooling down, phew! Hubby really doesn’t enjoy the heat so he was very happy…but I do love the sunshine, although I am enjoying the relief of the cooler days and nights that we’ve had more recently! Now that we are approaching Mother’s Day, we have some lovely ideas in our new look May Mother’s Day issue that you may find helpful when looking for special things to do with your family. You will also find some great competitions that you can enter so don’t delay, get onto our website ASAP and enter into all of our fab competitions for a chance to WIN! You may even win something that you could give to your mum! Good luck!

Meet the Cover Stars

Meet the Cover Stars

Our gorgeous cover kids are Luthando, Swazi and Olwethu Dlamini. Their mom is Sne, who is originally from Pietermaritzburg but is currently based in Bangalore, India. She is a Global Release Manager for Unilever. Her husband, Siya (a proud Durbanite), is a Regional Specifications Manager for SaintGobain Gyproc. Luthando (6) is their eldest son. He spent most of his childhood in JHB, and due to the multi-lingual environment in JHB, his core language is English. He is very fluent in English but battles to speak Zulu (their mother tongue). He is a very kind boy who loves his siblings and people generally. He always wants to do well in whatever he takes on. He loves watching TV, riding his bicycle and swimming. He is eager to learn and loves animals.

Swazi (4) is the precious princess of the family and is quite a daddy’s girl! “Because she’s tucked in between little and big brother, she is very boyish and has no interest in girly stuff like doing hair and nails or tea parties. The only girly stuff she’s interested in is watching Barbie on TV or the iPad,” says Siya. She loves climbing, playing outdoors and swimming. She also loves to help mummy around the kitchen. Contrary to her older brother, she has a phobia of animals. Olwethu (3), aka Junior, is mummy’s BIG soldier. According to his mom, Olwethu spends half his time eating - he just loves his food! He loves swimming and is a very social, clever and loveable boy. “He is the most stubborn of all our kids, always arguing with his nanny,” laughs Siya. “Because he has grown up in KZN, he has spent a lot of time with his grandparents so he is most fluent in Zulu. This causes a bit of a disconnection between him and his big brother, due to the language barrier, but we are working on that,” says his mom. “Motherhood is an honour and a privilege to me. To have been hand-picked, blessed and www.mumsmail.com

entrusted with three gorgeous (inside and out), healthy and bright kids. They truly are a perfect gift from the heavens. I can’t help but feel that my kids are God-sent - that they were allocated specially to me and my husband to parent. What an awesome privilege indeed! Of course I do not parent them alone. I have an amazing, loving, kind husband who is parenting them as much as I am. His role has been crucial to the wellbeing of our family. He supports me without wavering. “We are all very close to each other and we have a very strong family support structure (my mom, in-laws and our kids’ nanny). They are a crucial part of our journey as a small young family. “Lastly, and most importantly, we are a Christian family and our spiritual belief underpins all that we do. We entrust our lives and our kids’ lives to our God Almighty through prayer. We invite Him to direct our paths and to teach us how to parent them in the manner that we should,” concludes Sne. Written by Sarah Mackintosh.

We have scoured the internet for some novel ideas for Mother’s Day – here are some great home-made gift ideas that the kids can make for mom – with a bit of help from dad!

Mini Succulent Garden

Buy a few mini succulents at your local nursery. Find a nice colourful pot. Fill the bottom of the bowl with small stones/rocks. Put a layer of soil on top. One at a time, plant each succulent, scooping and packing in the cactus soil wherever needed and pushing everything in tightly. Source: www.homeyohmy.com.

DIY Peppermint Sugar Body Scrub

Mix a 3/4 cup white sugar, 1/4 cup coconut oil, about 10 drops peppermint essential oil (add to your own preference) in a bowl or zip lock bag and mix well. Once mixed, put it into a clean glass jar with a lid that seals – make sure the mouth is wide enough for mom to fit her hand in to grab a handful. Decorate your jar with red bakers twine and a gift tag. In a clean jar this Sugar Scrub will keep for up to two months and it’s the PERFECT winter bath time product! Source: www.emmaowl.com.

DIY Bath Bombs

Recipe is two parts baking soda, one part citric acid, spritz of witch hazel, fragrance oil and colourant (adjust to your preference). Mix baking soda and citric acid in a bowl and work out all the clumps. Add the fragrance oil – the amount is up to you. Thoroughly mix into the powders. Now add your colourant. You can ONLY use nonwater based liquid colour, or it will start fizzing. Thoroughly mix into the powders, using your fingers to break up colour clumps. Add the witch hazel using a spray bottle. Use about four spritzes to get the mixture to clump in your hand – as soon as your mixture makes a nice clump – it’s ready! Add the mixture to a mini muffin pan, making sure to REALLY pack the mixture HARD into your mould – this is what will keep your bomb together. When the tray is completely packed, set a timer for 10 minutes and let them sit. After the time is up, carefully turn them onto a sheet of wax paper to let them fully dry. These need to dry for a few hours before moving them. Carefully put them into a pretty glass jar and decorate with a gift card or label. Source: www.somethingturquoise.com.

AquaMAG AquaMAG is a multi-mineral concentrate that contains mainly magnesium and calcium, both minerals essential for over 350 enzymatic and metabolic functions in the body; brain, nervous system, muscle function, digestion and bone health. Below is a testimonial from an AquaMAG customer: “I’ve had intense behavioural problems with my son for the last two years (he’s now eight). Over the last year, it’s only intensified, to a point that I was considering boarding school, because he was out of control, and I physically couldn’t handle him anymore. In February I saw your ad in Mum’s Mail magazine, and researched more on the importance of magnesium. I decided to give it a try, as I was interested in the effects it could have on improving anxiety and frustration. Fast forward two weeks – I have a new child! I’m speechless at his transformation! He is such a pleasure to be around again (apart from the expected eight-year-old gripes). Outbursts and unreasonable behaviour are almost zero! He’s happy, tolerant and so much calmer. His words to me: “I feel less angry, and feel like I can control myself.” In addition to AquaMAG, he takes Mentat and Krill Oil Omegas. However, I’m confident to say, that AquaMAG has been the defining supplement. He was on the two other supplements for a period of time, before introducing AquaMAG, and I didn’t notice a drastic change. I noticed the almost immediate change after the introduction of AquaMAG. We now all take it – including my 17 month baby.” – Laona, Pietermaritzburg. Flavoured AquaMAG is available at Dis-Chem, pharmacies and health shops countrywide. Multiple Sclerosis Awareness

May is International Multiple Sclerosis Month. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a debilitating condition that has been baffling the medical world for more than a century. According to medical science there is no cure for MS and a minuscule understanding as to what causes this condition. MS affects the brain and spinal cord, a disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. In MS, the body’s own immune system attacks the myelin sheath which wraps around the nerve fibres to protect them. Without this outer shell, your nerves become damaged. Scar tissue may form. MS is a disorder of the central nervous system

9

marked by weakness, numbness, a loss of muscle coordination, extreme fatigue and problems with vision, speech and bladder control. Depression in its various forms is one of the most common and challenging symptoms of MS. Extreme heat and the slightest form of stress make the condition worse. Surrounding an MS patient with love, respect and understanding ignites healing. The MS symptoms can become severe at any time of the day. MS patients need the support and encouragement of their family, friends, work colleagues and community to manage and cope with this devastating condition. For more information contact Dee Munks, Chairman of Multiple Sclerosis South Africa KZN on 083 411 4282 or rosiemunks@telkomsa.net. Kids’ Life

The Love of a Child There is no limit when it comes to the love of a child. The unexpected hugs, the sloppy kisses and the slurring of those three words “I love you”, can warm anyone’s heart. Even when you are feeling anger or frustration towards them, their innocent smile reminds you that they mean no harm. A child’s love is so special – it is an unexplainable bond that is sewn together from a gentle cry that you hear during birth. The love of a child is the reflection of you as a parent, so what you put in is what you get out and all those proud moments - hearing their first word or watching them take their first steps – is something you will carry with you for the rest of your life. Sometimes you will find yourself staring for no reason at that beautiful soul of a human being that you created. Cherish those moments, because that is the impact of a child’s love. In times of struggle all that is needed is a little reminder of why you became a mother or father in the first place and one little giggle or that silly look can push you to move forward. Sometimes we take children for granted, we make excuses when they want our attention, but we tend to forget that we cannot buy back those hours, minutes or seconds. You as a parent are the shield and protector of your child’s love. You are responsible for the amount of love that you receive from a child, so take a few moments to cherish and receive that boundless love.

Communication is Key to Embracing Your Life

JULIA POWELL BALLET & PILATES

The key to building a positive relationship and avoiding any communication difficulties with your teenager is to keep the channels of communication open, especially at the time of year following the release of exam results. Teens and my fellow youth, you need to let go of anxiety and frustration by reminding yourself in every situation, “this moment is exactly as it should be”. There is so much to celebrate in the world and you have already achieved so much that you are alive in this moment – open your eyes and honour your life by looking for your blessings and your opportunities in every moment. That does not mean that you delude yourself, but, instead it means look at yourself and your actions honestly and see what it is you can learn from that particular situation, then put it behind you. That moment has passed and you now are living in a new moment, like a clean sheet of white paper on which you may write the story of your future.

Sue 084 395 0379 Samantha 074 764 3342 smartie2party@gmail.com

Method • Preheat your oven to 180°C. Grease two cake tins or line with greaseproof paper. • Mix up a batch of your favourite chocolate cake batter. • Pour the cake mix evenly into your two greased cake tins. • Bake in the centre of the oven for 23 to 28 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes in the tin then cool on a cooling rack. • Ice a thin, even layer of icing over the top of one cake and gently press the other cake on top. Cut off a section from each side and a point at the bottom of the cake. • Cut the point of the cake at an angle to create a nose. • Ice a thin layer of icing over the top of the cake and stack the offcuts on top to form the shape of the hedgehog. Apply more icing to the whole cake, then place in the fridge for 30 minutes. Once set, apply another layer of icing all over the cake. • Cut the chocolate buttons in half and place in rows along the cake to create the hedgehog’s spines. • Create eyes using white chocolate buttons and chocolate drops as pupils.
