FROM THE EDITOR Maths and English programmes for children of all ages and abilities

By the time we distribute this issue of Mum’s Mail, we will be less than a month away from hosting The 6th Annual Mum’s Mail High Tea in association with The Sunflower Fund. Excitement in our office is on the upswing, and ladies are scrambling for the last few tickets (a state of panic quite familiar to those who missed out last year, and who were on the waiting list of 180 ladies who never booked tickets). One of our “oldest” advertisers (and by that I mean long-standing, and not in age!), remarked that it must be great to be in such demand, with 430 tickets almost selling out in just over a month. The only problem with being in demand, is the pressure of raised and heightened expectations...the ladies who attend every year expect bigger and better, year after year.

Our theme/dress code for the 2011 event is “Very Vintage” so if you’re stumped for ideas of what to wear, think pearls and lace, satin, feathers or fascinators in your hair, creams and browns. And don’t forget my best friend, Google - it’s amazing what pics you will find which will provide you with fashion inspiration to suit the theme.

Chronic Stress in Children

Veni Maharaj

What is chronic stress? Good stress is short term and can be positive as it motivates and gets an individual going. Stress changes from good to bad when the stress is ongoing (chronic) and is more than your child can cope with. When stress is ongoing the body is continually responding to that stress. The chemicals and hormones activated during stress don’t have a chance to return to normal. This ongoing situation stresses the organs, unbalances several body systems, weakens the immune system and leads to fluctuating sugar levels. Eventually, adrenal gland exhaustion can result because of all the cortisol being pumped out, leading to lowered energy levels. Chronic stress affects body and brain. It depletes nutrients, destroys brain cells, damages the gut/digestive system and lowers immune function. It also affects behaviour.

Tackling chronic stress in our children’s lives invariably involves examining our own stress levels. This might mean considering a change in lifestyle. Having a happier and more peaceful home environment, and an improvement in our children’s health, behaviour and marks would make it well worth the effort.

HEALTH, FASHION & BEAUTY Ramadan Fasting Without the Headache The fasting month of Ramadan is an annual religious practice of Muslims. During this one-month period, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset with participants abstaining from eating, drinking and smoking for 29 to 30 days. Many people who fast over Ramadan suffer mild or moderate headaches as a result of factors such as hypoglycemia, caffeine withdrawal, dehydration, change in sleep patterns and the stress of fasting itself. Headache onset often occurs in the afternoon or evening just before the fast is broken. Headache frequency typically increases over the duration of fasting. Those prone to headaches at other times of the year are most likely to get headaches, but some patients that experience headaches during this time have no history of headaches or migraines.

Fabrics for R20 & R30 per metre. Selected winter fabrics reduced. Mon - Thurs: 9am - 5pm Fri: 9am - 12pm & 1:15pm - 5pm Sat: 9am - 1:30pm 6 Butler Rd, PMB • Tel: 033 - 342 6890

Eliminate headaches from your fasting regimen during Ramadan: • Reduce caffeine consumption in the weeks leading up to Ramadan month. Have a cup of strong coffee just before the start of the fast for the day as this can prevent a caffeine withdrawal headache. • Eat a meal with low sugar content before the fast begins for the day to prevent low blood sugar and therefore the possibility of triggering a headache • Ensure adequate intake of fluid before the onset of the fast to prevent headaches. • Rest and sleep often to help prevent being subjected to headaches and the pain.

Braid Street Family Clinic • Relaxed, Child Friendly Environment • Moms & Kids seen in One Appointment

Medicinal Help: Preventative medication that will last for the full twelve hours of the fast includes preparations such as the tablet Naproxen sodium, which is taken as a single dose of 500mg just before the fast begins. This is available over the counter at pharmacies.

Breastfeeding (Then and Now) Let’s look back at the closest bond between mother and baby: in days gone by motherhood and breastfeeding went hand in hand. Expectant mums hardly had a choice whether they were going to breastfeed. Girls grew up watching mothers, aunts, sisters and friends breastfeed. It was the norm. Babies were nurtured the natural way with no clocks to tell when and how long to feed. No formula-fed babies to compare to. Deciding not to breastfeed was like signing baby’s death sentence (though this can still be the case).

• Ballito: 076 222 2946 • Durban North: 083 785 4332 • Kloof: 083 259 2746 • Pietermaritzburg: 083 445 1441

Why you should give the “Kiss of Life”... • Approximately 35 people die from heart attacks every day in our country • 75% of all cardiac arrests happen in people’s homes • Approximately 10 children die every day in South Africa and 1000s are injured • CPR for children, if started early, is often lifesaving, as they collapse due to breathing problems • The brain can only survive for about 5 minutes without oxygen

Today there are so many things that can confuse and distract new mothers in their most critical role of mothering: clocks, bottles, cleverly marketed artificial milk, well-meaning and contradicting advice from loved ones, books, magazines and the Internet. Doctors study medicine and almost nothing about the normal ins and outs of breastfeeding. The media creates the viewpoint that breasts are merely sexual objects. Discreet breastfeeding in public is frowned upon while suggestive advertising draws few complaints.

Yes, both then and now babies have died unnecessarily due to incorrect feeding. But if we, with our increased knowledge, would go back to the mindset and practice of the way babies were meant to be fed, we would have the best of both worlds. Young women would see first-hand the most special nurturing that takes place at the breast. Children would grow up to be healthy and securely attached. Society would also benefit as these children grow to become the adults of tomorrow. Let’s all support new mums and help make breastfeeding the norm it’s supposed to be…

KIDS’ CORNER/LET’S PARTY! Kristina Burge: Junior Winner of 2011 Gateway to Fame

Kristina Burge, a Grade 5 pupil at Chelsea Senior Primary School, picked the song Good Morning Baltimore from the musical Hairspray for the Gateway to Fame auditions. At first she wanted to do a Jordin Sparks song but was advised to do Good Morning Baltimore instead. This proved to be the winning choice and Kristina got through the auditions and was ultimately named junior winner of the competition.

There was a whole week of workshops at the Barnyard leading up to the competition, including an outing to Stuttafords to choose outfits for the finals. “Then the Big Night came,” said Monika, Kristina’s mum. “Scott and Wells sent stylists to do the finalists’ hair. The atmosphere was electric, both among the performers and the audience. There were 500 tickets sold! Kristina was the last one to sing in her junior group. She went up onto the stage and all she could see were the judges and the first two rows of tables. She wasn’t nervous, she said – it was like the rehearsals!”

“My daughter Kristina was a Valentine’s Day surprise baby,” Monika went on. “The second name we’ve chosen for her is Ella, as in Ella Fitzgerald, the jazz singer. The naming was sheer coincidence at the time but in the course of the last 10 years she started showing quite a remarkable aptitude for singing which makes me think that it must have been a premonition, or a kind of special magic that has since accompanied her musical pursuits.”

EDUCATION & SCHOOLING

Veruschka Naidoo Audiology Inc.

Executive Skills and ADHD If your child has Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), he is sure to have weaknesses in executive skills. Researchers now believe that ADHD is primarily a disorder of executive skills, rather than of attention. Children with this condition aren’t able to regulate themselves well enough to be able to plan, control impulses, or organise. It’s important to remember that not all children with weak executive skills have ADHD. However, all children with ADHD have weaknesses in one or more executive skills - because such weaknesses are part of the definition of ADHD.

• Onsite Audiologist • Hearing Screening & Testing (All Ages) • Quality Hearing Aid Fittings • Worker’s Compensation Cases & Medico-Legal Cases

Important Executive Skills: (1) Impulse Control - Stop and think before acting. This is a fundamental weakness in many children with ADHD. A child with weak impulse control says or does things without thinking. They will do what is fun and avoid the drudgery without considering their obligations. Children with this weakness often speed through school work, sacrificing accuracy and completeness along the way. Children without impulse control: • Interrupt, chatter excessively • Leave homework until bedtime • Rush through school work without reading directions • Follow rules inconsistently. (2) Emotional Control Manage feelings by considering goals. Closely related to impulse control, emotional control helps people keep their eyes on their goal even when painful or unexpected things happen. Children who can’t manage their emotions have trouble accepting criticism. They’re quick to call a situation “unfair”. They overreact to losing a game or getting called on in class. They have difficulty sticking with schoolwork when they are distressed about something. Children without emotional control: • Are easily frustrated and quick to give up • Cannot tolerate corrections or criticism.
