FROM THE EDITOR Maths and English programmes for children of all ages and abilities

I’m giving up Mum’s Mail with immediate effect! I’m resigning! I no longer need to work for a living, as today I became very, very wealthy. This morning I received three e-mails to inform me that: 1. I would be receiving 7.3 million US Dollars inheritance via courier. 2. I had won 1 million British Pounds in the BBC Lotto Draw. 3. I had won 150 000 US Dollars from Nokia in a random computer ballot draw.

Scottsville Gina Clowes 082 564 9537 Howick Meryl Daykin 079 529 6447

I doubt that anyone, not even Richard Branson, earns that much in a day! The terrifying reality is that there are SOME people (yes, you know that I know who you are…), who are very tempted to actually click on the attachments that these skelms send you via e-mail, and some of you actually DO open the attachments and/or reply! If you’re feeling tempted to react to these e-mails, please consider the following: 1. It is unlikely that someone you have never met, and who lives abroad, is going to die and leave you millions of Dollars. 2. You cannot win a lotto draw if you have not bought a ticket. 3. It is improbable that Nokia would be sending you a lot of money from a random draw you did not enter.

PREGNANCY & BABIES Mastitis and Blocked Ducts Most breastfeeding mums have been there: you wake up with a sore area on your breast. It looks red and feels hard. You have a headache, feel hot and cold chills (fever) and just want to sleep. Mastitis is not something that will just go away on its own. Even though you just want to sleep you first have to do a few things to help unblock a blockage. If you follow these instructions, it should clear the problem without needing antibiotics. If after doing this there’s no alleviation within 24 to 48 hours, or if you have an infected nipple, it may be time for stronger meds. There’s NO reason to wean due to mastitis! Take a small frozen pack of peas and a hot-water bottle. Start and end with heat and do the following: • Place the hot-water bottle on the area for about a minute or until you can’t stand the heat, then change HEALTH & BABIES to the frozen peas until you can’t stand the cold. There is a lot a parent or child minder can do in the first few years of a child’s life to encourage a love for water. It is recommended that “play time” in the bath take place before the child is washed. Without soap in the water children won’t burn their eyes and the bath will be less slippery. The bath water should not be too deep. Children should be encouraged to lie on their tummy to play, with the legs outstretched behind them, not under the body. This is the correct position for swimming.

Children should be taught to blow long bubbles from an early age. Count loudly how long the child can blow for, trying to extend this time. Depending on the age, children can be given a straw to blow through.

To encourage getting the face close to the water, the child can put one ear onto the water and leave it there for a while, then the other ear. Toys which sink can be placed in the bath for children to “search for”. This encourages children to open their eyes in water. If children play with a small plastic jug, they will experiment with pouring water, eventually pouring it over their faces and hair.

EDUCATION & SCHOOLING Are you or your child not coping?

Dyslexia The following is a letter written by a girl who is dyslexic. In it she describes her feeling of anxiety and alienation just because she learns differently. It was not until she was much older that someone realised that she had her own specific talent and allowed her to use that talent. It was then that she began to realise that she was just as capable as everyone else but in a different way. “I hated school because I’m dyslexic. I hated everything about it. The teasing, the stares, the whispers when I couldn’t read out loud in class, the tests that I would just stare blankly at. It wasn’t until tenth grade that finally I was given a chance. My English teacher, Mrs B, thought I might be dyslexic and talked to me about it. In class, she didn’t call on me to read out loud, and she would let me take my tests out in the hall, away from people. She found out I loved music, and let me write my essays about it. She encouraged me to write my feelings down, and tell people how hard I was really trying. I wrote a story, and she helped me publish it online. I was so proud when I saw that this was something I could do, and do well. People liked my stories, and my ideas. She encouraged me to talk to musicians, and I eventually got a job promoting little-known bands I liked. I see now that even though I’m not good at talking aloud, remembering dates or numbers, or taking tests, I’m good at telling guitars apart by their sound, telling stories, and helping people out. She changed my school life, and I am forever grateful for that.”

EDUCATION & SCHOOLING THE AUDIBLOX PROGRAMME HELPS TO:

Manual on Road Safety, Alcohol and Drugs South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD) is very concerned about the high level of alcohol abuse in S.A., especially amongst the youth, and at the number of people who are dying on our roads because they are not following basic road safety rules. Car crashes are the leading cause of deaths or injuries in the 15 to 29 year age group and alcohol is usually involved (both drink driving/drink walking). As part of the U.N.’s “Decade of Action” SADD have developed a manual to assist everyone to get involved so that we can try and change these unnecessary deaths and injuries caused by alcohol abuse. SADD worked on the manual with the World Health Organisation and others, and the 112-page resource manual on alcohol, drink driving and basic road safety is aimed at learners, educators, parents and the community. It includes sections on “spiked drinks”, the effect of alcohol on the under-21 brain, effects of alcohol on the muscles, units of alcohol, the drinking rules and the driving rules. The manual also discusses the effects of dagga and other drugs on driving skills.

WHAT TO DO/WHERE TO STAY A Perfect Christmas Album

Look Out For Our Next Christmas Event!

This Christmas, Epson has created a guide that provides you with tips on how to create a great collection of photos: • Take lots of photos throughout the day. You’ll be surprised how one spontaneous photo can sum up the magic of the day so much better than posed photos do. • Experiment with outdoor scenes, night photos and closeups. A close-up shot of a shiny Christmas tree decoration with family members in the reflection can add a great creative spin on a traditional photo opportunity. • Arrange the family in order for family portraits. Remember school photos? Shortest at the front, tallest at the back and nobody gets cut out. • Stock up on batteries/memory cards/inks/paper. You don’t want to miss a one-off photo opportunity just because that picture of your Christmas cake took the last space on your memory card. • Plan your day. Create a list of ideal photos you know you want to capture: Christmas dinner, the whole family standing in front of the tree, even relatives falling asleep post-Christmas dinner. • Un-plan your day. Don’t be afraid to deviate from your schedule and don’t worry if you miss opportunities. • Frame your photos. Get creative and use objects in the foreground and background to frame your subjects within your photographs. • Take advantage. Most cameras these days have various exposure modes, so experiment with different ones for a creative twist on conventional. How about a sepia filter for a romantic Christmas moment, or even printing in black and white for a stylish twist on the festivities?
