Editor’s Life
Happy Mother’s Day to all our Awesome Moms! I have had a very busy couple of months recently but things are now calming down, thankfully! At the end of March we had the 5th Annual PMB Ladies Breakfast, which was held on 23 March 2018 and which I’m pleased to announce was a roaring success! We raised over R41 000 for The Sunflower Fund. I’d like to say a huge Thank You to all of our sponsors and to all the ladies that attended this event – I hope you had as much fun as we did! Thank you for all the positive feedback.
and then it was my daughter’s birthday – yes, I now have two teenagers in the Arthur household! Plus we went to a hilarious play ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’, the Aussie Aqua Circus and plenty of other things thrown in – I have certainly been a busy bee, to say the least! So I’m looking forward to a calm and relaxing May and hope to be thoroughly spoilt on Mother’s Day (hint, hint!) - my kids have already been asking when it is so they have no excuse if they forget!
GRADES 1 - 12
After the PMB Ladies Breakfast I needed a couple of days rest, but then it was straight Have a wonderful May and I hope you get into Easter and the Splashy Fen Festival – to enjoy Mother’s Day with family and loved what a blast that was, although I did think ones! that I was back in England with the rain…! We went as a family and enjoyed camping Victoria out, cooking under the stars and listening xxx to fantastic music – the River Stage and the Acoustic Stage were my particular favourites. A few more days were needed to recover PIETERMARITZBURG

Cover Stars
Meet the Cover Stars
Our lovely cover stars are mom Amber with her daughter, Sienna Nicole Strauss, who is two years and 8 months old. Dad Nick is a General Manager in the manufacturing industry and Amber is a former hairdresser turned stay at home mom. Sienna also has a brand new baby brother - Dylan Bear Strauss, who is just eight weeks old. Sienna will be three in August and she is the light of her parents’ life. “She’s beautiful and full of energy - always telling stories and singing songs, as well as sometimes driving me crazy! She has her own little social circle already with her best friends, and she also loves being out and about, going to parks or friends’ and families’ homes and she loves anything artistic,” says Amber. “Our special routine every morning is tea and “spiggets” (biscuits) in bed. There is no way she will skip this routine!” “I said she was the light of my life, but of course Dylan has come along and stolen a massive chunk of my heart - he is so snuggly and I like to say my angel child. I feed him myself and love those bonding moments. Sienna loves him to bits and is so good to him. I have to be on guard as she always wants to hold him and breast feed him herself!!” Amber says she is truly blessed with two beautiful children as well as the best husband around, who is a massive help in the home and with both children and best of all - he is a great cook! “Being a parent is the best thing ever, exhausting, but still the best thing ever. I love seeing my children grow and change – I love all the little stages and special things they do and say, and I personally feel it’s just the greatest job in the world and I am beyond blessed!”

Matthew’s Bush Adventure
Umg
eni Steam Railway Est. 1982
My son Joshua and I were so excited to read this amazing local story book! This is a charming story by Maddy Badenhorst about a young boy called Matthew who wanders through the bush meeting various critters along the way. The book is a popular rhymed tale that children love and is beautifully illustrated by Samantha Stone. Joshua agrees that this one is a new favourite. Matthew takes a walk through the bush and meets some exciting animals and he doesn’t go anywhere without his trusted teddy bear. Look closely on each page and see if you can find the hidden toy soldier.
Animal Pants
Joshua found this book hilarious. He is three years old and of course, anything to do with underwear is very funny at the moment! From the biggest gorillas to the tiniest ants, the animals are wearing UNDERPANTS from long johns to bloomers, Y-fronts to boxers - this book is quite simply packed with underpants! There’s a cat who buys her pants from a catalogue, and a frog who wears pants when he’s off for a jog - not to mention a penguin with frozen pants, or the difficulties of finding undies for an octopus. With an infectious rhyming text and brilliantly entertaining artwork, there is a giggle guaranteed on every page. These books are written by Brian Moses and are available at www.Kidsbookclubshop. co.za for only R100.

Mother’s Day Ideas Picnic time! Take your mom/wife for a relaxing picnic at your local park or botanic gardens. Pack a delicious picnic lunch, or if you don’t have time, there are companies who sell picnic baskets and menus. Easy ideas are a rotisserie chicken with rolls, baby tomatoes and sliced cucumbers, with fruit juice and a flask of coffee or tea. Spread out a big blanket with some cushions or camp chairs and just have a relaxing time with your mom and family. The kids can run around playing or feed the ducks and birds.
Then you can let mom relax on the beach while the kids and dad.
Weekend away Book a weekend away for the whole family. It doesn’t have to be far afield – just a change of scenery and pace can do wonders for a busy, stressed out mom. Show her how much you appreciate all her hard work and let her put her feet up for a weekend while you and the family cook and arrange activities. Let mom curl up with her favourite book, or do whatever relaxes her.
Alone time This is my personal favourite idea… sometimes a mom just wants to have some time to herself to unwind and do her favourite things without any interruptions. Dads – take the kids out for an entire day of fun, and leave mom at home alone. If she wants to relax in her PJs and binge watch Netflix, or sleep, or read her book, or have a bubble bath and then go shopping – it’s up to her, as the day is hers!
Road trip Take a drive into the countryside for lunch and some sightseeing. You don’t have to drive too far to see some sights and landmarks in your own town or province, so hit the road and enjoy some fresh country air. Find a quaint country lodge to have a peaceful lunch, and then take a slow drive home, stopping along the way to see places of interest.
Breakfast in bed Pamper session Sometimes it is the Nothing restores the soul small things that make like a good pampering! a mom happy – like Take your mom for a being served breakfast mother-daughter mani in bed. Asthma Awareness
Asthma is an airway disease presenting with chronic or recurrent coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. The above happens because the tubes in the lungs (the bronchiole) get smaller in diameter.
The diagnosis is made by observing a change in airflow, which is measured with a lung function test before and after the use of a Broncho-dilator. These tests are dependent on effort and therefore are not reliable in the child younger than about five years of age. There are two parts to this decrease in Lung function measurements are also used diameter: to determine the efficacy of the asthma A bronchospasm, where the tubes constrict treatment. because they have a muscle on the outside, and inflammation and phlegm production These red flags for asthma should not be on the inside of these tubes. This results in ignored, especially in a patient or child that less airflow through these tubes and the has never been diagnosed with asthma wheezing we hear on examination. before: • Coughing at night • Coughing when exercising • Coughing in cold air • Coughing There should be two different modes of if laughing or crying • Getting repeated chest treatment that an asthmatic should be using: colds One to treat the bronchospasm called a reliever, and another one to treat the Asthma is a chronic disease that can be well inflammation: a preventer. controlled and should be treated chronically and with a structured treatment plan. As the names suggest, the preventer should be used every day and the reliever only By Dr Frank Böcking, 033 - 342 8235. when needed. Most preventers are inhaled corticosteroids. These medications are safe to use long-term, because they are only active on the surface of the lungs and not in the blood stream at all! Should they enter the blood stream they are broken down by the liver almost immediately. Most patients, who are diagnosed with asthma will get a treatment plan from their physician to use when they are getting a tight chest. This will help them to act and change treatment, possibly increase treatment, until they can be seen by their physician.
