Christmas Sanity Guide

Christmas is a time for giving and a time for love. I love watching my children’s faces not only on Christmas day but also in the lead up to Christmas – learning about Christmas, singing songs and creating Christmas crafts. Like many others mothers, I do find that buying all the Christmas presents and trying not to break the bank can be stressful. This article provides some tips to help keep your sanity this Silly Season.

Set the boundaries.

It can be stressful when you think that you have bought all the presents and then a

friend comes over with an unexpected gift. My family buys gifts for our family (including siblings, grandparents etc) and 1-2 very close friends and I try to ensure that our other friends understand this. Whenever another friend start talking about Christmas and gifts I bring it into the conversation that I prefer not to do gifts other than with family as I find it gets too big then and I ask them not to buy us anything. This way I at least know I am not going to get any surprises and then feel bad.

Buy gifts only for family and very close friends.

Talk to your partner about who you feel you should buy gifts for. It is generally accepted that most people only buy for their family and very close friends. There will be some friends that are an exception and if you do not want to buy for the whole family because let’s face it once children are involved suddenly there are so many more gifts to buy! Talk to these friends and maybe come to an agreement where you just buy gifts for the children or a gift for the whole family like a board game, Christmas cake or Gingerbread house.

Secret Santa for friends and/or large families

Secret Santa is a great idea for a group of friends around Christmas. My mothers group meet up every year and around Christmas we do a Secret Santa for the Children as our Christmas party/celebration. We have a secret Santa for the older children and another separate one for the younger children as not everyone has more than one child, making it fair. We also specify a limit to be spent on each gift – generally $20 and under. This is also a fantastic idea if you have a large family with many cousins…

Set a budget per person for the gift amount

In our family we set a reasonable budget that applies for every single person (except myself, hubby and our children) that we buy presents for. This way I know in advance what I am generally going to spend. Working within the budget I look for bargains, sales and discounts and try to make the budget work for every single person so that I am getting them what they want.
