SUMMER 2016 AT MWPAI SCHOOL OF ART The School of Art program for Community Arts Education, founded in 1941, offers part-time, noncredit instruction for beginning, intermediate and advanced students. All classes are held in the finest studio facilities in Central New York and are taught by academically qualified, active professional artists.

Encourage your child's creative side with MWPAI’s Summer Kids Art Institute. Weeklong morning classes immerse kids in art making, material exploration, and social engagement on the campus of the nationally ranked PrattMWP College of Art and Design. Drawing, painting, and animation are offered for one, two, three, or four weeks. Clay and sculpture classes are offered in two-week sessions. Course content changes each session so students may register for multiple classes, consecutive or not. Kids and pre-teens use art to discover their learning potential, creating and having fun as they challenge their imaginations. Kids Summer Arts Institute classes are taught by dedicated, enthusiastic instructors who respond to and encourage a child’s creative spirit. Visits to the MWPAI Museum of Art allow students to be inspired by art. PLEASE NOTE: Parents are asked to provide a snack for break time and a smock to protect clothing. All other supplies are included in class tuition. IMPORTANT: To ensure the age appropriateness of the curriculum, children must meet the age requirement listed with each course description by the beginning of class. No exceptions.

Harness the power of audio equipment and learn the technical art of mixing sound for musical performances. Instructor Mitch Eckler is technical director for MWPAI Performing Arts program and a professional session drummer who understands how venues and ambiance affect sound. Students will be introduced to hardware, how to organize a mix, determine levels, and add effects in a classroom setting before mixing a live session at the end of the course. Humans have been the subjects of drawings since prehistory. This evening class will explore gesture drawing, contour drawing, and other methods of recording a direct response to the figure on paper. In executing a portrait painting, the artist strives to depict the inner essence of the subject. Students are introduced to portrait painting by working from a live model and learning basic drawing techniques necessary for a preparatory sketch to then transfer and complete an oil painting. Ages 18 + / Intermediate-Advanced / Yulia Lekovich This class celebrates intensive technical study, problem solving, and dialogue with artists and artworks of the past. It builds on a longstanding tradition of working from close observation of a masterpiece in a museum’s permanent collection. Artists will receive personalized instruction in oils and the unique opportunity to utilize artworks from the Museum of Art’s collection. Students will copy either still lifes or portraits. This is an unrivaled creative opportunity to paint from masterworks. All paintings are 19th century masterworks from the MWPAI collection. Some previous knowledge of oils is required. Techniques include sawing, piercing, texturing, riveting, chain making, soldering and bezel setting cabochon stones. Utilize class time to practice techniques and make finished pieces of jewelry. PROFESSORS CHRIS IRICK received a BFA in metalsmithing from Texas Tech University and an MFA in metals from UMASS Dartmouth. She has taught jewelry extensively in both college and adult education programs. She is currently Professor of Metal Arts and the head of the jewelry program at PrattMWP. Her work is included in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Jewelry/Metals BRYAN MCGRATH joined the faculty in 1985 as head of the ceramics department. His work has been featured in A Potter’s Professional Handbook, by Steven Branfman and Studio Potter magazine. Bryan has exhibited internationally and his research travels have taken him to Japan and Ireland. Private collections include The Fred Jones Jr Museum of Art, Oklahoma University, College of Visual and Performing Arts, Syracuse University Museum of Art, and MWPAI. Pottery/Ceramics
INSTRUCTORS VERONICA JUYOUN BYUN was born in Seoul, Korea and educated in the US, receiving her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, R.I. and BFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y. CHRISTOPHER CIRILLO instructs design, color theory, painting, and drawing courses for PrattMWP, Mohawk Valley Community College, Empire State University and also for Kirkland Art Center. Chris received his MFA in visual arts from The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University and his BFA in painting and drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Painting / Adults

SANDRA DEVISSER has been an instructor at the School of Art since 1980 where she developed the Young Artists program. Sandra has previously taught painting and art history at SUNY Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome. She received her bachelor’s degree in Social Studies from SUNY Albany, masters from Colgate University, and was awarded a certificate in Fine Art from MWPAI. Painting / Adults / Teens ANNETTE GURDO has been actively working and exhibiting her paintings in Central NY for more than 20 years. In addition to being honored numerous commissions, her work is included in private collections throughout the Northeast. She received an Associate Degree in Fine Arts from MVCC/ Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute and a BFA in Drawing & Painting at the Philadelphia College of Art. Painting / Drawing / Adults RACHEL BARTUNEK is the owner of Handmade Darling, a bespoke paper goods and event accessories boutique featured both online and in local CNY shops. She received her MS in Communication Design through Pratt Institute with a focus in print and typography. Her freelance work includes creating brand presence, surface design, and hand lettering. Design / Workshop STEPHANIE BEVINS attended PrattMWP and completed her BFA/MS in Art and Design Education from Pratt Institute. She is currently an Elementary Art Teacher for the Westmoreland Central School District. At home, Stephanie and her husband enjoy being entertained by their two dogs and pet pig. Kids
MEGHAN ATKINSON attended PrattMWP and went on to complete her BS in Visual Art Education at SUNY New Paltz with a concentration in Printmaking. She is a certified K-12 visual arts teacher working in the Syracuse school districts. Kids ALEXANDRIA COMPO attended PrattMWP and graduated from Pratt Institute with a BFA in Communications Design and a concentration in Illustration. Alexandria is a freelance designer and illustrator who works with a variety of private, retail, musician, and creative clients.Teens PAULA CARUANA received her bachelor’s degree in Art Education from Millersville University of Pennsylvania. She is a certified art teacher in Pennsylvania, and has taught art in grades K-12 in public and parochial schools in suburban Philadelphia and Lockport, NY. Paula is a Decorative Arts Assistant in MWPAI’s Museum of Art Decorative Arts Department Kids MITCH ECKLER graduated from SUNY Oneonta with a B.A. in Music Industry. He is currently the Technical Director at MWPAI. Mitch has toured and played with many bands working across all genres. ERIC MISHALANIE completed the MWPAI/ MVCC program before receiving his photography BA from Maryland Institute College of Art. Eric currently owns and operates Mishalanie Photography which covers a wide range of photographic services. Photography / Adults LISA ORISTIAN found her artistic voice through her first life-changing Metals for Jewelry class and is now privileged to be able to teach jewelry to others through MWPAI’s Community Arts classes. Lisa is the owner of Kissing Dog Designs, a small artisan jewelry business. Jewelry / Metals / Adults MEGHAN MURPHY PAGANO received her MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from Goddard College. She holds a BFA in Photography and Art Education from the College of Saint Rose and an Associates degree in Fine Arts and Illustration from MVCC. Animation / Kids KYLE PUMILIO eceived his education from PrattMWP and SUNY Potsdam. As a certified art teacher, Kyle has the privilege of working with diverse students of all ages. Through his artistic investigations, he has found a long lasting love for working with ceramics and the three dimensional form. Kids SHANNON STOCKBRIDGE received her BFA in sculpture through PrattMWP and graduated from Pratt Institute. Jewelry is her primary medium and she has been creating a wearable collection using the lost-wax casting method incorporating alternative mediums. Jewelry / Metals / Adults

YULIA LEVKOVICH is an award-winning representational painter.Yulia completed rigorous training at the Academy of Realist Art, received her BFA from OCAD University, Toronto, and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art, Manhattan. DISMISSAL
MWPAI instructors may, with the approval of the Dean, dismiss from class or refuse enrollment to any attendee who is disruptive or uncooperative or whose skills are advanced beyond the level of instruction of a particular class or section.
REFUND POLICY
A full refund will be granted for Community Arts Education classes or workshops when an entire course is canceled or the Office of the Registrar receives an official withdrawal form from a student prior to the first scheduled class meeting. A pro-rated refund may be given after the second scheduled class, based on last day of attendance and/or date the official withdrawal form is received by the registrar. After the third scheduled class, no refund will be granted unless it is a medical emergency accompanied by a doctor’s note. This refund policy covers withdrawals for any reasons including injury, illness or family emergencies. Refunds are issued in the form of a check, which is mailed directly to the student’s home address. In case of credit card payment, refunds are applied directly to the credit card account. Allow four weeks to process.
