SUMMARY
Founded in 1979, the Ballet Company of Győr plays a key role in the history of Hungarian dance. It was formed when the graduating department of the Hungarian State Ballet Institute that year stayed together in order to introduce dance fans from all over Europe and the world to their unique theatrical world over the decades to come. Following in the footsteps of Iván Markó and János Kiss since 2020 as the third director of the storied ensemble is László Velekei, a winner of the Harangozó Award, a prestigious recognition within the Hungarian dance world. His choreography One way to Heaven is an excursion into lighter material than is typical for his creative work.
“Our focus on a gentle, emotional theme this time was a conscious decision: when Müpa Budapest honoured us with the title »Ensemble of the Season«, we wanted to show that our company is capable of presenting very different productions and performances that can reach a wide range of audiences. We are living in times when the audience needs quality entertainment,” Velekei said.

The choreographer/director has long been attracted to the genre of narrative ballet: “I feel that I am strong in telling stories on the stage. In addition to the classics, I’ve always also been excited by the challenge of creating entirely new stories, as well as engaging with the idea of how to incorporate popular music into my work. In this piece, I’ve intertwined the two notions: Jamie Winchester and Róbert Hrutka are living legends of Hungarian pop music, and here they will be playing their widely beloved songs on stage in a ten-piece chamber ensemble.”
As for the roots of One way to Heaven, Velekei cites the cult film Moulin Rouge: “The way in which a coherent story emerged from the songs triggered our imagination. After long conversations with Jamie and Robi, they sent us a lot of songs, and then, based on the emotional world of these songs, we put together a libretto that the audience will be able to identify with.”
In terms of form, One way to Heaven bears the hallmarks of both an atmospheric concert and an exciting dance performance. Velekei also revealed some details of the plot: “We present the life of a man through his relationships with women. The arc of the story is conveyed by the lyrics and the musical dramaturgy. There is something light and ethereal in the overall material, and this is reflected on the stage.”
Velekei says that the protagonist will be a familiar figure to many: “Whenever happiness is within reach, our hero turns the other way, but we all know very well that life presents us with moments when we have to make the right decision. We have to be confident that we will be able to do so!”
