SUMMARY

The Concerto for Orchestra was a work Béla Bartók wrote on a conductor’s request, Serge Koussevitzky of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. Said Tamás Juronics, a Kossuth Prize winner dancer and choreographer, who created choreography for the orchestral piece: “The content and form of the Concerto cannot be separated from Bartók’s experience, his mood, in 1943, during his stay in the United States: he was ill with fever, had had to leave Hungary, was tormented by homesickness, and was worried over the fate of his homeland and a Europe torn apart by the war – all of which led to a creative block. For three years, he wrote no music, and thought he may never do so again. Then, at a time when he was hospitalized, he was approached with a commission. It saved his life: if he wrote all his nightmares, pain and bitterness into the work, it also brought about a new zeal, and consequently became replete with joie de vivre and optimism. The things that appear on the stage are the visions his music encapsulates, the nightmares that were caused by his sustained fever, and my additional ideas.” In 2020 Tamás Juronics sat on the jury of Müpa Budapest’s Composition Competition and took part in selecting the best works by young Hungarian composers. “Dániel Lázár’s piece immediately caught my attention, as it is a consistent, rhythmically very danceable work that last for about twenty minutes, and was written by the composer as a dance etude.” The choreography represents a series of ritual events, the battle in man between the world of instincts and the intellect becomes manifest in a symbolic stage play. The original title of Viktor Molnár’s composition, also an award-winner at Müpa Budapest’s 2020 Composition Competition, was Mars Mission. The choreography that is based on the music captures the battle of body and soul. The search for faith, the pursuit of goodness, is in constant conflict with human weakness, the desires of the flesh, sexuality. The piece shows the self-reproach and desire for self-justification of a sex-worker, her striving to feel pure and holy. Created for one dancer, this short work relies on the performer’s unique character and presence.

The diverse repertoire of the Szeged Contemporary Dance Company includes both ballets written for the compositions of Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Bartók, Stravinsky and Orff, and choreographies based on the works of contemporary composers like György Ligeti, Péter Eötvös, Arvo Pärt, Unsuk Chin or Thomas Adès. Their director is András Pataki, Harangozó Prize winning choreographer, and their artistic director is Tamás Juronics, who has a special role in shaping the company’s distinctly original artistic profile. Their partner, the Szeged Symphony Orchestra is the most important musical ensemble of the South Great Plain region, the basis of local concert life, and the backbone of opera performances at the city’s National Theatre. Their current director and principal conductor, Sándor Gyüdi, was appointed in 1999.
